Big 12 Conference The Big 12 Conference – Strength & Success The Big 12 enters its 18th year as it continues to promote the strength and success of one of the nation’s premier athletic conferences under the direction of second-year commissioner Bob Bowlsby. TCU and West Virginia joined the league on July 1, 2012 and became the Big 12’s first additions since inception, joining Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech. With 10 members, the Big 12 remains as the only major conference in the nation to determine its champions in all sports directly on the field of play with a full round-robin schedule.

The conference’s hard work ethic and strong values have translated to enormous success in its first 17 years. Since it began competition in 1996-97, the league can boast of 52 NCAA team titles and 537 individual national championships.

Through its first 17 years, the Big 12 has claimed a team national championship in 16 of the sports it sponsors. During the last nine years a total of 31 NCAA trophies have been hoisted by Big 12 institutions, with at least one national crown won in all but one year for the conference, including 16 consecutive seasons.

In its short history, the Big 12 has had 537 Academic All-America recipients, averaging more than 30 each season. Big 12 student-athletes have shown commitment to their studies by earning numerous individual academic recognitions. Nine times in the past eight years a league athlete has garnered the top academic honor for their respective sport. The Big 12 had plenty of success overall in the classroom the last four years, as the Conference boasted 80 student-athletes earning Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America recognition through the fall of 2012. Competitive excellence, scholarship and sportsmanship are all equal components of the Big 12 philosophy. All-Big 12 teams and Academic All-Big 12 squads are recognized for each sport at the end of their respective seasons. At the end of each academic year, the Conference honors its top male and female student-athletes with the Big 12 Athlete of the Year and Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year awards. The Big 12 sponsors 23 sports. Men’s squads include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and wrestling. 2013 SEASON PREVIEW Coming off a disappointing 2012 season, the Oklahoma State Cowgirls are motivated to bounce back in a big way in 2013. OSU head coach Colin Carmichael was by no means satisfied with last season’s 11-6-3 campaign, but he fully expects it to be the exception for a program he has helped build into one of the best in the region and a rising star nationally, one that has been to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship six of the last seven years and been crowned Big 12 Conference champions four times since 2008. “Last year, we didn’t meet our goals — we hoped and expected to do better,” said Carmichael, who enters his ninth season as OSU’s head coach and 18th overall with the program in 2013. “But the positive is, we started a number of freshmen and those players returning have so much experience you hope that translates into being better prepared mentally and physically for what it entails to play at this level. “We’re hopeful, and we really expect some of those players to make a big jump from their freshman to sophomore year.” And if last season’s 11-win season was a rebuilding year, then the OSU future is bright. The Cowgirls were a youthful bunch a year ago, often starting as many as six freshmen, and that bodes well for the ’13 group as eight starters return. The bad news, however, is that the three starters who don’t return include a three-time All-American — AD Franch, who recorded a record 38 career shutouts — and a pair of All-Big 12 performers Carson Michalowski (92 career starts) and Megan Marchesano (28 career goals). But those loses certainly don’t alter the focus for Carmichael. “Every season we go into now wanting to compete for a Big 12 championship, and if you do that, you’re on the radar for the NCAA tournament,” Carmichael said. “Those are our goals moving forward every year and looking further ahead than that is just a little naïve because there’s just so many factors out there that can affect your season.”

Allie Stephenson

Kristen Kelley

With just one scholarship senior and three juniors who have played more than 10 games on the roster, the Cowgirls will again be young this season. A strong sophomore class, led by the likes of Kelsey Bass, Madison Mercado, Allie Stephenson and Delaney Kiely, gained valuable experience last season and is expected to carry a bigger load in year two. “Last year we had so many fresh-faced young players that had no idea what to expect; this year we shouldn’t have so many of them at key positions,” Carmichael said. “All those players played enough as freshmen to where they’re almost like juniors — the amount of minutes they got in their first season might usually be what you get in your first two years here. That should help them. It doesn’t guarantee that they play better, but it should help them going forward.” Adding to the youth is an incoming class that is arguably the most talented OSU has ever brought in. Carmichael calls Krissi Killion “as good as any freshman forward in the country” and compares defender Natalie Calhoun’s athleticism to that of former Cowgirl All-American Melinda Mercado. Carmichael believes several starters could emerge from the rookie bunch. “You don’t want to get too carried away with the young players, but at the same time, they’re very talented,” Carmichael said. The Cowgirls won’t be void of veteran leadership, however, and senior midfielder Kristen Kelley leads the way. A three-year starter, Kelley has nine career goals, six of those game winners, to go along with five assists, and Carmichael doesn’t understate her value to the squad. “We as coaches really knew how valuable Kristen was, and last year when she got injured I don’t think it’s a coincidence that our results started to suffer,” Carmichael said. “She’s that engine, that driving force in our midfield that allows other players to be better.” The junior class includes a duo in Miriam Rhinehart and Hayley McKinney who have played in big games for championship teams, and in Rhinehart, the Cowgirls have a player who presents a dual threat as either Cowgirl FC ’13

2013 SEASON PREVIEW an attacking scorer or a defender on the back line. “(Rhinehart) will be on the field, there’s no question about that,” Carmichael said. “Playing her up front in the spring opened our eyes a little bit that she could be very dangerous in the attack. A lot of it is just going to be determined on need. We’ll probably train her 70 percent as a defender and 30 percent as a forward knowing that if we need some added punch up front or somebody gets hurt, she could play. Having that option is great.” The biggest void OSU will have to fill is in goal, where Franch roamed for each of the last four years and blossomed into one of the nation’s best keepers at any level. Junior Rosa Medina filled in admirably in a handful of games that Franch missed the last two seasons, but she’ll have to win the job over newcomers Ashton Hierholzer and Michela Ongaro. “(Medina) will get first dibs with her experience, but we’ve got two hungry freshmen coming in who want to play,” Carmichael said. “At the very least, that should push Rosa to play at a higher level. “Whoever plays in goal for us, replacing the best keeper in OSU history and one of the best ever in college soccer, it’s gonna be a tough order. But that’s the challenge laid out, and hopefully that inspires them to play better.” This year’s Cowgirls will also be tested by a daunting schedule that includes NCAA runner-up Penn State and fellow College Cup participant Florida State, as well as Florida, Washington State, Gonzaga and North Texas — not to mention the always-tough Big 12 slate. “Last year’s schedule, in hindsight, wasn’t difficult enough,” Carmichael said. “We went 10-2 in our non-conference games, yet our RPI was in the 60s at the end of the year and that’s not good enough. And I don’t think that schedule prepared us properly for the Big 12 weekends. “Looking at this year, on paper, it’s the most difficult non-conference schedule we’ve put together. The challenge is making sure you win enough games to have enough confidence going into the Big 12 and also have a good RPI. “The positives are, if you do navigate that non-conference schedule well, you’re more than prepared for the conference schedule coming up. You never know at the end of the season how it all plays out. It’s a challenging schedule, but hopefully it gets you going in the right direction.”

COACHING STAFF

Colin Carmichael If you are looking for a blueprint of how to build a collegiate soccer program into a national contender, Oklahoma State head coach Colin Carmichael would be a good place to start. Carmichael has been at OSU since the inception of the women’s soccer program in the fall of 1996, and he continues to help lead Cowgirl soccer to new heights and a spot among the nation’s elite. OSU is in the midst of the most successful stretch of seasons in program history, and as the program enters its 18th season, the Cowgirls are looking to build on the greatest season in its history in Carmichael’s ninth year at the helm. Carmichael, who served as OSU’s co-head coach with Karen Hancock during the 2005 and 2006 seasons, is 127-35-22 during his eight-year tenure as the Cowgirls’ head coach, compiling a winning percentage of .750. He led the Cowgirls to six consecutive appearances in the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship from 2006-11, and after advancing to the second round four-straight years, the Cowgirls made back-to-back trips to the Elite Eight in 2010 and 2011. The Cowgirls have also been a dominant force in the Big 12 Conference under Carmichael as they captured four consecutive league titles from 2008-11. OSU won the regular season title in 2008, captured the Big 12 Soccer Championship title in 2009 and 2010 and claimed another regular season championship in 2011. The 2011 campaign ranks as the best in program history as OSU won a school record 22 games, highlighted by a record 21-game unbeaten streak. During that span, the Cowgirls were 19-0-2 and had a stretch in which they notched 15 consecutive wins. The run to the Big 12 championship saw OSU finish 6-0-2 in league play. After falling in the title game of the conference tourney, the Cowgirls reeled off three-straight wins in the NCAA Championship before falling to top-ranked and eventual national champion Stanford. Carmichael earned Big 12 Coach of the Year honors for the fourth time in 2011, and the Cowgirls saw a program-record seven players earn All-Big 12 32

status, including Melinda Mercado being named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year for the secondstraight year. Mercado was part of a senior class that went 75-14-10 (.808) during their careers, placing them as the fourth-winningest senior class in the NCAA in 2011, and she was also one of two Cowgirls to earn All-American honors, along with AD Franch. The year culminated with OSU finishing fifth in the final national rankings for the second-straight year. The 2010 season saw OSU set a school record for wins as they finished 20-4-2, which also earned the Cowgirls their highest-ever final ranking in the national polls at No. 5 in the NSCAA poll. In a year that saw OSU tie a school record with a 13-game unbeaten streak and lead the Big 12 in goals and goals against average, Carmichael was named the 2010 Big 12 Conference Co-Coach of the Year and the NSCAA/Mondo Central Region Coach of the Year. OSU led the Big 12 with five all-conference performers in 2010, including four first teamers, and a pair of Cowgirls — AD Franch and Melinda Mercado — earned All-America status. In 2009, the Cowgirls peaked at just the right time. Carmichael’s squad ended the season on a 10-game unbeaten streak, with eight wins and two ties. During that stretch, OSU claimed the second Big 12 Soccer Championship title in school history and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

After ending the regular season with five-straight wins, OSU entered the ’09 Big 12 tourney as the fifth seed. The Cowgirls proceeded to knock off Nebraska, top-seeded Missouri and second-seeded Texas A&M en route to the title. OSU had lost to each of those teams during the regular season. In the opening round of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship, OSU battled USC to a scoreless draw but advanced by winning a penaltykick shootout for the first time in school history. The Cowgirls were also forced into a shootout against 11th-ranked Santa Clara but failed to advance, ending their season with a 15-7-2 record. OSU led the Big 12 in 2009 with three All-Big 12 First Team selections, including record-setting goalkeeper AD Franch, who was also named a Freshman All-American. The 2008 season was record setting on a number of levels. The Cowgirls finished 18-1-4, setting a school record for wins, and claimed the program’s first-ever Big 12 Conference regular season championship. The Cowgirls finished 13th in the final national polls after being ranked as high as No. 7 during the regular season. OSU’s .870 winning percentage ranked sixth in the country. OSU’s offensive attack was among the nation’s best as the Cowgirls led the NCAA in scoring offense at 3.22 goals per game and finished third nationally with 74 goals. The Cowgirls set single-season school

records for goals and points. Carmichael was named the 2008 Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year and also claimed 2008 Central Regional Coach of the Year honors. A program record six Cowgirls were honored with Big 12 postseason awards, including first-team allconference performers Kasey Langdon and Yolanda Odenyo, who was also named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. In 2007, OSU finished the season with a 14-6-3 record, the 14 wins marking the third-highest total in program history. Along the way, OSU defeated four teams ranked in the Top 10, including a win over No. 9 San Diego in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and a landmark win against Notre Dame in which the Cowgirls snapped the Fighting Irish’s 43-game home unbeaten streak. Further signs of just how far the program continues to climb are evidenced by the fact that OSU started and finished the season in the national rankings for the first time in school history. The Cowgirls ended the season ranked No. 17 by Soccer Buzz Magazine and 23rd in both the NSCAA/adidas and SoccerTimes.com polls. OSU also set a program home attendance record with 10,222 fans, an average of 929 fans per game at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex. Carmichael served as an assistant coach at OSU until he was elevated to associate head coach in 2003 and co-head coach in 2005. In the four seasons following his promotion, the Cowgirls compiled a 54-20-11 record, captured a Big 12 Tournament title, finished second in the Big 12 regular season standings and made the first two trips to the NCAA Tournament in school history. In 2006, Carmichael helped lead the Cowgirls to their best finish in school history as they went 17-3-3 and finished second in the Big 12 with an 8-1-1 conference mark. OSU earned its highest-ever national ranking as they climbed to as high as No. 7 in the NSCAA polls, and the squad advanced to the NCAA Tournament and defeated UNC-Greensboro for the school’s first-ever tournament win. Carmichael and Hancock were rewarded for their outstanding 2006 campaign by earning the Central Cowgirl FC ’13

Region Coach of the Year award. Soccer Buzz named the coaching tandem runner-up for National Coach of the Year behind North Carolina’s Anson Dorrance. One of the biggest reasons for the program’s recent success is the influx of talent that has come to Stillwater as a result of Carmichael’s excellent recruiting skills. The Cowgirls continue to bring in some of the top-ranked classes in the Central Region, and in 2005, OSU had the 11th-ranked recruiting class in the nation. Carmichael’s knack for recruiting overseas has been at the forefront of most of those outstanding classes. In 2005, he landed the second-rated international recruit in German native Angelika Feldbacher, and in 2006, top-rated international recruit, Annika Niemeier, signed to play in Stillwater. Carmichael, a native of Airde, Scotland, also helped bring in Swedish native Yolanda Odenyo, who became the first OSU player to earn first-team AllAmerican honors in 2006. Carmichael also worked on the coaching staff of the Region III Olympic Development team for 15 years. The ODP has seen numerous players go on to play soccer at the collegiate level as well as with the U.S. National Team. In the spring of 2001, Carmichael was recognized as the U.S. Soccer Association’s Region III Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the National Coach of the Year honor. In 1991, while Carmichael was still an active player at USA, he began his coaching career at St. Paul’s Episcopal High School in Mobile, Ala. After his graduation in 1993, he was hired on as an assistant coach at USA, where he assisted with the men’s program and also helped to establish the women’s program. While at USA, Carmichael earned a marketing degree, and he received his Master’s in physical education in 1996. He currently holds a U.S. Soccer Federation “A” License and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America “Premier” License. Carmichael resides in Stillwater with his wife, Stacie, and her daughter, Alicia. The couple’s first child, Maggie, was born in 2007, and they welcomed a son, Ean, in 2010.

He was elevated to associate head coach in July 2012. In two of the last three seasons, the Cowgirls advanced to the Elite Eight of the tourney and finished No. 5 in the final national rankings. The Cowgirls have also captured three Big 12 Conference championships since Elkington’s arrival, claiming tournament titles in 2009 and 2010 and a regular season crown in 2011. oklahoma state cowgirl soccer 2013

2012 SEASON IN REVIEW By its standards, Oklahoma State had a disappointing season in 2012. But it also speaks to the recent success of the program when an 11-win campaign isn’t one that meets expectations. It was a rebuilding year of sorts for coach Colin Carmichael, who often started as many as six true freshmen, but there were a number of positives to build upon for a club that finished 11-6-3 overall. The Cowgirls opened the season with six consecutive wins, including a thrilling triumph at No. 24 Memphis, and reeled off nine victories in its first 10 matches. Big 12 Conference play would not be as kind to Carmichael’s squad, who finished 1-4-3 and in seventh place in the league, with three of the losses coming by a single goal. OSU lost to 15th-ranked Baylor in the opening round of the Big 12 Soccer Championship, seeing its streak of four-straight conference titles and six-straight NCAA Tournament berths come to an end. ••• • Oklahoma State’s senior class of Kassie Embrey, AD Franch, Alicia Gray, Keely Kippenberger, Megan Marchesano, Carson Michalowski, and Casey Smith finished the season as the 6th winningest senior class in the NCAA in 2012. The Cowgirls were 68-19-9 (.755) over the last four seasons. No other Big 12 team won more games during that span. • OSU had four All-Big 12 Conference performers in 2012. Senior goalie AD Franch was named to the All-Big 12 First Team for the fourth time in her career, becoming the first player in Cowgirl soccer history and just the seventh in Big 12 history to achieve that feat. Senior forward Megan Marchesano, senior defender Carson Michalowski and freshman midfielder Madison Mercado were each on the All-Big 12 Second Team. • Freshmen Madison Mercado and Kelsey Bass were named to the Big 12 All-Newcomer Team. • Goalie AD Franch became the first three-time NSCAA All-American in OSU history. She was a first-team All-American in 2012, marking the secondstraight year she earned that honor. • AD Franch was named to the Soccer America 2012 MVPs Second Team. • Several Cowgirls were named to various teams of the week, including: * Madison Mercado was named the Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Week on Aug. 28. * AD Franch was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 2. * Megan Marchesano was named a CollegeSoccer360.com Primetime Performer of the Week on Sept. 4. • AD Franch, Carson Michalowski and Megan Marchesano were each named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Women’s National Top 100 Rankings. That trio, along with Miriam Rhinehart, were also ranked among the Big 12’s top 20 players. • Three Cowgirl seniors – goalie AD Franch, defender Carson Michalowski and forward Megan Marchesano – earned NSCAA All-Central Region honors. Franch was a first-team honoree, while Marchesano and Michalowski made the third team. • The Cowgirls were ranked No. 5 in the NSCAA preseason poll, which marked the highest preseason ranking in program history. • OSU was ranked in the national top 25 in each of the season’s first nine weeks, extending a program-record streak of consecutive weeks in the national rankings to 38. The Cowgirls climbed to as high as No. 3 in the national polls in 2012 and saw a record streak of being ranked in the top five of the NSCAA poll extended to 16-straight weeks. • For the second-straight year, OSU was undefeated on its home field, finishing 8-0-3 at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex. 38

Carson Michalowski & AD Franch

• Goalie AD Franch finished her career with an OSU-record 38 career shutouts, which ranks sixth all time in NCAA history. • AD Franch played 8,064:02 in goal in her career, which ranks ninth on the NCAA’s all-time list. • Forward Megan Marchesano led the Big 12 with five game-winning goals and ranked fourth with 11 goals. • Megan Marchesano finished her career ranked in the top 10 on OSU’s all-time list in goals, assists, points and shots. • OSU earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the 11th-straight year with a team GPA of 3.28. • The Cowgirls had eight players named to the Academic All-Big 12 Team, with each of those earning first-team honors. Making the list were seniors Carson Michalowski, Megan Marchesano, Kassie Embrey and Alicia Gray, juniors Kristen Kelley and Taylor Mathews and sophomores Hayley McKinney and George Christie. • Senior Megan Marchesano and junior Kristen Kelley were named to the Capital One Academic All-District Seven Second Team. • Senior Megan Marchesano was named to the NSCAA Scholar AllAmerica Third Team. • AD Franch was a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award. • AD Franch became OSU’s highest-ever professional draft pick when she was taken in the first round of the 2013 National Women’s Soccer League College Draft by the Western New York Flash. She was the sixth overall pick. Cowgirl FC ’13

Midfielder Yolanda Odenyo is one of the most decorated players in Oklahoma State soccer history and became Cowgirl soccer’s first All-American in 2006. Odenyo would go on to earn All-America status in each of her final three seasons in an OSU uniform. In 2006, Odenyo was named a first-team All-American by both the NSCAA/adidas and Soccer Buzz Magazine after leading OSU to its highest-ever national ranking (No. 7) and a school-record 17 wins, including the first NCAA Tournament victory in Cowgirl soccer history. She was also named the 2006 Big 12 Conference Co-Player of the Year and the Central Region Player of the Year after recording five goals and eight assists. As a junior in 2007, Odenyo was named a secondteam All-American by Soccer Buzz after finishing the season with seven goals and three assists. Soccer Buzz also named her one of its 14 player of the year finalists. Odenyo capped her career with the best season ever by a Cowgirl in 2008. She set OSU single-season records with 16 goals and 37 points, both of which also led the Big 12. She also set a school record by scoring goals in seven consecutive games and was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. Following her senior season, Odenyo was named an All-American by four different outlets, including earning a spot on the first team of three of those. She was a finalist for two player of the year awards and was one of 15 semifinalists for the Hermann Trophy, given to the nation’s top collegiate player.

Goalkeeper AD Franch was a three-time All-American for the Cowgirls, earning multiple honors in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Franch rewrote the OSU soccer record books during her four seasons in Stillwater. Her 38 career shutouts are a program best and rank ninth in NCAA history, while her 8,064:02 in goal is also the most by a Cowgirl and ninth all time in the NCAA. She also finished with 325 career saves and a 0.69 goals against average. Franch capped her career with a senior season that included six shutouts and 79 saves as she became the first Cowgirl in history to be a two-time NSCAA first-team All-American. She was also named to the Soccer America MVPs Second Team. As a junior in 2011, Franch recorded an OSU singleseason record 12 shutouts en route to a pair of first-team All-America honors from the NSCAA and Soccer America. With her in goal, the Cowgirls led the NCAA in shutouts and goals against average, and she ranked second nationally in GAA (0.35) and shutout percentage (0.92). Franch earned multiple All-America honors for the first time as a sophomore in 2010 as she was named to the NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-America Second Team and was also honored as a member of the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Season First Team and with a spot on the Soccer America MVPs First Team. She led the Big 12 with nine shutouts and ranked second in goals against average (0.73) and save percentage (.826).

Sapulpa, Okla.

• 2010 NSCAA Performance Subaru (second team) • 2010 TopDrawerSoccer.com (third team) • 2011 NSCAA (first team) Defender Melinda Mercado anchored some of the NCAA’s top defenses during her Oklahoma State career and finished as a two-time All-American. As a senior in 2011, Mercado helped lead a defense that led the NCAA in goals against average (0.337) and shutouts (18) as the Cowgirls recorded a school-record 22 wins and advanced to their second-straight NCAA Elite Eight. For her efforts, she was named a first-team All-American by the NSCAA. OSU was also one of the NCAA’s top defensive teams in 2010 in large part due to the play of Mercado, and she was named to the NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-America Second Team and earned a spot on the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Season Third Team. From her center back spot, Mercado led an OSU defensive unit that led the Big 12 Conference in goals against average at 0.79. The Cowgirls also ranked second in goals allowed (21) and shutouts (10). Mercado was named the Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Year and was a first-team all-conference pick. She also captured Defensive MVP honors at the Big 12 Soccer Championship for the second consecutive year. Additionally, she was named to the NSCAA All-Central Region First Team. With Mercado anchoring the defense, OSU earned a No. 5 national ranking in the final polls after the Cowgirls advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship, captured their third-straight conference title and recorded a program-record 20 wins.

Cowgirls IN The Pros In January 2013, AD Franch became Oklahoma State’s highest-ever professional draft pick when the Cowgirls’ All-American goalie was selected in the first round with the sixth overall pick by the Western New York Flash of the National Women’s Soccer League. In 2012, Melinda Mercado was a third-round draft choice of the Boston Breakers in the WPS Draft, while Kasey Langdon was a sixth-round pick of the Atlanta Beat in the 2010 WPS Draft.
