2012-13 PREVIEW COWBOYS BY POSITION

THE ROSTER With the only major loss from last season’s roster being Keiton Page, the Cowboys have nearly the same team as last year, with the addition of several key components. Starting with the seniors, there are two members of the class, although neither of them have been at OSU more than two seasons. Jéan-Paul Olukemi arrived in Stillwater as junior-college transfer prior to the 2010-11 season. He came to OSU with sophomore status, but was injured during the semester break last season and sat out the spring. The other senior on the roster is Philip Jurick, who was a juco transfer last season and spent the offseason RETURNERS WHO STARTED recovering from an ankle injury.

LAST SEASON:

Oklahoma State’s junior class Markel Brown 26 consists of Markel Brown, Michael Cobbins 24 the Cowboy with the most Le’Bryan Nash 23 experience, and Kirby Gardner, Brian Williams 20 a junior-college transfer from San Philip Jurick 16 Bernardino Valley College. Brown Jéan-Paul Olukemi 11 has spent the past two seasons honing his skills on the court and improving his leadership abilities during the process. He leads all returning players with 26 starts last season. Gardner is a point guard with good size, quickness and handles.

Le’Bryan Nash is another sophomore who started 23 games last season and is the leading returning scorer, averaging 13.3 points per contest. Joining him in the sophomore class is Marek Soucek. The freshman class consists of three players, including two teammates from high school. Marcus Smart is a McDonald’s All-American out of Flower Mound Marcus High School in the DFW metroplex. He and his teammate, Phil Forte, led their high school squad to back-to-back Class 5A state titles. Joining them in the 2012 class is Kamari Murphy, a Brooklyn, N.Y., native who spent last season at IMG Academy in Florida. Four walk-ons are also on the roster: Christien Sager and Mason Cox, who were on the team last season, as well as Ford Stuen, a freshman originally from Henderson, Ky., and Alex Budke, a sophomore transfer originally from Stillwater via St. Gregory’s University.

The sophomore class in 2012-13 is a large one, which includes three true sophomores and two redshirt sophomores. Michael Cobbins and Brian Williams started 24 and 20 games, respectively, last season, and are the only two returning players to start every league game last winter.

2012-13 PREVIEW PRESEASON HONORS Cowboy sophomore Le’Bryan Nash was a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team in a vote of the league coaches. He is the ninth OSU player to be named to the preseason all-league team since the Big 12 formed in 1996-97. Marcus Smart was named the Preseason Big 12 Freshman of the Year by the conference coaches and was also an honorable mention for the Preseason All-Big 12 Team. He was also named one of five members of the Sporting News’ Freshman All-America Team.

Big 12 Conference play — with two new faces — will begin on Jan. 5. Once again, all 10 teams will play each other twice in a home-and-home round-robin format. OSU is 17-2 all-time against newcomer TCU, the last meeting played in the 2005 Las Vegas Invitational. The Cowboys are 0-1 all-time against West Virginia, the only matchup played in Lexington, Ky., in 1958. The Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Championships will take place March 13-16, 2013, at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo.

NEWCOMER NOTES •

Marcus Smart participated in the FIBA Americas U18 Championships this past summer, starting all five games and leading Team USA to a gold medal.

The Flower Mound, Texas, native won the slam-dunk competition at the Kentucky Derby Festival Classic in Louisville, Ky.

•

He is the fifth Cowboy player to have competed in the McDonald’s AllAmerican game, joining Le’Bryan Nash (2011), James Anderson (2007), Byron Eaton (2005) and Glendon Alexander (1996).

•

Phil Forte won the 3-Point Competition at the 2012 National High School Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships in New Orleans, held over the NCAA Final Four weekend. He also won the 3-Point Competition at the Kentucky Derby Festival Classic.

•

Kamari Murphy is the fifth Cowboy originally from the state of New York, including the third player from Brooklyn, joining Ian Phillip (1993-94) and Anthony Brown (2007-09).

•

Kirby Gardner is the 16th player to come to OSU out of the state of California, and joins teammate Jéan-Paul Olukemi who is also from the Golden State.

•

Ford Stuen is the nephew of head coach Travis Ford. His mother is Coach Ford’s sister. Alex Budke is the oldest child of the late Kurt Budke, former Cowgirl Basketball head coach.

THE SCHEDULE OSU will unofficially start the 2012-13 season on Thursday, Nov. 1, as the Cowboys host Ottawa University of Kansas in an exhibition contest. Oklahoma State will open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 9, hosting UC Davis as part of a doubleheader with the women’s team. The Pokes will travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico, to compete in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, Nov. 15-18. Other teams competing in the tournament are: Akron, NC State, Penn State, Providence, Tennessee, UMass and UNC-Asheville. All games will be televised on ESPN2. Oklahoma State will play seven of eight games between Thanksgiving and New Year’s at home. The only road trip during that span will be a return trip to Blacksburg, Va., to face the Virginia Tech Hokies. The homestand will conclude with a New Year’s Eve matchup against Gonzaga inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.

2012-13 PREVIEW RANDOM NOTE-ABLES • Oklahoma State lost it’s leading scorer from last season in Keiton Page, as well as Cezar Guerrero, but returns everyone else from last year’s squad, with the addition of four others. The Cowboys return 65.5 percent of their scoring from a year ago, and nearly 90 percent of their rebounding. • This season, OSU will play six-straight home games between Dec. 4 and Jan. 1. It will be just the second time since 1936 that the Cowboys have played six-consecutive games at home, and the first since the 1997-98 season. It will mark the sixth time in school history that OSU has played six-straight games at home (1914-15, 1920-21, 1922-23 and 1935-36 are the others). During the 1923-24 season, Oklahoma State wrapped up the slate with nine-straight home games. • As a team, Oklahoma State had 141 blocked shots last season, the most since the 2002-03 season when Andre Williams had a school-record 85 blocks, pacing the Cowboys to 171 total. • Last season marked just the fifth time since 1974-75 — the first year blocked shots were recognized as a statistic — that five different players reached double figures in deflections: Michael Cobbins (49), Philip Jurick (47), Markel Brown (19), Le’Bryan Nash (12) and Brian Williams (10). • It also marked the first time in school history that there were two players on the same team with at least 45 blocked shots in a single season. • Oklahoma State has made at least one three pointer in 386 consecutive games, dating back to January 13, 2001. • This season marks just the seventh time in school history that a roster has included multiple players from California. The 2003-04 Final Four squad had four players from Cali on the roster at the beginning of the season, but two players transferred out after the fall semester. There were three Californians on the team in 1978-79, and all three played at least five games that season.

RECORD BOOK WATCH • Junior Markel Brown has 52 blocked shots in his career, the second-most ever by a Cowboy under 6-5. Current Memphis Grizzly Tony Allen, who was listed at 6-4, had 54 blocks in his two-year career. Brown ranks third among Cowboy guards in blocked shots, as James Anderson holds the record with 60. • Sophomore Michael Cobbins blocked 49 shots last season, tying for the 12thmost in a single season in school history. His 49 blocks are the second-most ever by a Cowboy freshman, trailing Byron Houston’s 65 in 1988-89 and just ahead of Joe Atkinson’s 48 in 1981-82. Michael is also tied for 15th on the career blocked-shots list after just one season.

2012 SPAIN TRIP OVERSEAS TRIP PROVIDES EXTRA BONDING TIME, ON AND OFF THE COURT Once every four years, the NCAA allows teams to travel outside the United States during the off-season to compete against outside competition. Oklahoma State had never taken advantage of this opportunity, until this summer. The Cowboys traveled to Spain this past August and played four games against international competition. OSU started out in Barcelona and played two games against a Barcelona Select team, although the roster was vastly different for the two games. The Cowboys breezed to a 95-72 victory in their first contest. The offense was nearly unstoppable, shooting better than 50 percent from the floor with four players reaching double figures. Markel Brown and Le’Bryan Nash each scored 18 points, while Nash and Kamari Murphy both grabbed 10 rebounds. The defense was stingy, allowing just 29.7 percent shooting from the floor, including 8-of-34 from beyond the arc. The only thing that kept Barcelona in the contest was their consistent free-throw shooting, going 26-of-37 from the charity stripe. Select team coach Ruben Filipy brought in a different set of players for game two, and Barcelona kept the contest close, even leading with less than a minute remaining in the game. However, Brown hit a huge three pointer to give OSU an 82-80 lead, and the Cowboys went on to an 86-81 victory. Brown recorded a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds, going 8-of-14 from the floor. Brian Williams added 18 points in the game while Nash scored 16 and dished out four assists. Marcus Smart dished out six assists and had four steals, equaling Brown for the team high. The Cowboys had 17 steals total, forcing 24 turnovers by Barcelona.

Oklahoma State traveled to the island of Gran Canaria for its next two games, played in the city of Las Palmas. The Cowboys faced BC Gran Canaria in game three and came away with an 80-59 victory. Brown once again led the team in scoring, putting 17 points on the board. Williams added 12 for the Pokes along with nine boards, and senior Jéan-Paul Olukemi reached double figures with 10. OSU’s final contest of the tour came against the Gran Canaria All-Stars. The Cowboys utilized a balanced offensive attack and came away with the 85-69 victory. Smart led the Pokes with 16 points, including 13 in the second half, and was 5-of-6 from the floor. Brown added 15 points while Williams chipped in 12. Michael Cobbins and Marek Soucek tied for team honors with seven rebounds each, while Murphy added six. On the tour, Brown averaged 18 points per game and shot 55 percent from the floor, including 10-of-18 from beyond the three-point arc. Williams and Nash each averaged 12.3 points, and Smart averaged 9.5 points, shooting 63.2 percent from the floor, 5-of-7 from long range, and 9-of-10 from the line. He also had team highs in assists (15) and steals (11). The trip wasn’t all work, however. Coach Ford and his staff set up a couple of educational tours, including a city tour of Barcelona and a catamaran tour of the Canary Islands. The trip was a successful one, and should lead to good team chemistry among the players and staff. It also gave the players a good chance to work together before practice starts in mid-October. All-in-all, it was a great experience for the entire program.

TRAVIS FORD HEAD COACH FIFTH YEAR AT OSU KENTUCKY, 1994 Entering his fifth season at Oklahoma State, head coach Travis Ford has re-energized the Cowboy Basketball program, both on the court and in the eyes of the OSU faithful. His drive and determination is infectious, as his studentathletes strive to succeed in competition and in the classroom. In four years, the Cowboys have defeated nine ranked opponents, including top-ranked Kansas in 2010 and second-ranked Missouri last January. The win over KU was the first by an OSU squad over a No. 1 team since the 1989 season. Ford is just the second coach in school history to defeat a No. 1 and No. 2 ranked team, joining Mr. Iba. The Pokes hit the exacta with the win over Kansas, having defeated 10th-ranked Kansas State just a month earlier on the Wildcats’ home court. It was Oklahoma State’s first road victory over a top-10 opponent since 1958.

“Travis Ford is one of the great young names in the coaching fraternity. He is a terrific communicator who understands the modern-day athlete. He learned by playing under one of the best in the game in Rick Pitino. I think Ford will have Oklahoma State among the upper echelon of the Big 12 for a long time.”

Ford’s outgoing personality is infectious, and has made him a quick favorite of the Oklahoma State fans. He is considered one of the leading young coaches in the country, by both the national media and his peers in the coaching community.

Just as important, he has become a front-runner on the — Dick Vitale, recruiting trail, as evidenced ESPN Basketball Analyst by his first recruiting class at Oklahoma State being ranked No. 4 by HoopScoop.com in the spring of 2009. He has brought in two McDonald’s All-Americans in his short stint at OSU, with Marcus Smart joining Le’Bryan Nash in that elite group. Ford is able to maximize each and every student-athlete’s contribution to the team through his uncanny ability to encourage and motivate. A perfect example of this skill occurred when he prompted Byron Eaton to lose more than 40 pounds between his first meeting with Ford — when he weighed 248 pounds — and when the season started just six months later, when he weighed in at 206. Another instance was how Marshall Moses magically transformed from essentially a bench warmer during the first semester of his sophomore year to one of the most dominating big men in the Big 12 during conference play. Moses was on the verge of quitting midway through the season as he was averaging just 2.1 points and 1.5 rebounds in under eight minutes per game. However, a sit-down chat with Ford did wonders, propelling Moses to his first-career doubledouble against Texas A&M. Over the last half of that season, the Cowboy started 15 games, averaging 26 minutes, 9.6 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest.

Ford exceeded all expectations in his first season as the head coach of the Oklahoma State Cowboy Basketball program. When Byron Eaton made two free throws and OSU led top-seeded Pittsburgh 72-71, the Cowboys were just four minutes away from their first Sweet 16 appearance since 2005. It was also Oklahoma State’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament in four seasons, a feat which the Cowboys duplicated in 2010. Ford began his head coaching career in 1997 at the age of 27 at Campbellsville University, an NAIA program in Kentucky. After a sub-.500 season in his inaugural year as a head coach, he led the Tigers to a 28-3 record and was named the Mid-South “Travis was one of the brightest Coach of the Year in 1999. A year later, Campbellsville point guards I’ve coached. Ford was hired at Eastern Kentucky prior to the 2000-01 season. Despite back-to-back seven-win seasons, he steadily built the Colonels into an Ohio Valley powerhouse, winning 22 games in 2004-05 and — Rick Pitino, taking EKU to its first NCAA Louisville Head Coach Tournament appearance in 26 seasons. After winning the OVC title, the Colonels met seventh-ranked Kentucky in the first round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament in Indianapolis and fell 72-64 to the Wildcats despite cutting the lead to five twice in the final four minutes of the game. Eastern Kentucky’s 22 victories in 2004-05 are the most for a single season in school history. Matt Witt, the all-time leading scorer in EKU history, played his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons for Coach Ford.

Success led to Ford’s next position as the head coach at Massachusetts. Following John Calipari’s departure, the Minutemen went into a tailspin, going 136-137 over the next nine seasons and winning just 10 games in 2003-04. However, Ford led a resurgence once again, taking UMass from 13-15 in his first season to a 24-9 mark in year two and sharing the Atlantic 10 regular-season championship with a 13-3 league record. UMass picked up its first postseason victory in over a decade when the Minutemen defeated Alabama 89-87 in the first round of the NIT.

The 25-11 record was good enough for a No. 2 seed in the National Invitation Tournament. UMass defeated the Orange for a second time in the Carrier Dome — the first team in history to do so in the same season — rallying back from a 22-point deficit for an impressive 81-77 win in the NIT.

Massachusetts met twotime defending national champion and No. 1 seed Florida in the NIT semifinals in Madison Square Garden in New York City and came away with an impressive 78-66 victory over the Gators. UMass fell in the finals to Ohio State, 92-85.

Ford coached back-to-back Atlantic 10 Players of the Year as Stephane Lasme won the award in 2006-07 and Gary Forbes received the accolade in 2007-08. In fact, he has coached the conference newcomer of the year in three of his last five seasons of coaching as James Anderson was named the Big 12 Player of the Year in 200910. Ford began his career in the collegiate ranks as a freshman at Missouri in 1989. He was named to the UPI Big Eight all-freshman team after averaging 6.4 points and 3.5 assists per game. He transferred to Kentucky prior to his sophomore season and led the Wildcats to the NCAA Tournament his remaining three years.

Ford was named firstESPN Basketball Analyst team All-SEC in 1993 and second-team all-league in 1994. He was also a two-time Most Valuable Player at the SEC Tournament in 1993 and ‘94. He was named the Southeast Region MVP as he led Kentucky to the Final Four in 1993 as a junior.

The Minutemen finished the season ranked eighth nationally in scoring offense, averaging 81.5 points per game. UMass ranked third nationally in blocks per game, averaging 7.3 per contest. They also averaged 9.2 three-pointers made per game, ranking 13th nationally.

Ford’s prep playing career was also stellar. He led his team to three state tournament appearances during his career at North Hopkins High School and was named All-State. He averaged 31.7 points per game as a senior and was twice named Western Kentucky Player of the Year. Ford’s playing days ended in training camp with the Golden State Warriors, but his time in California landed him the role of Danny O’Grady in the movie, “The Sixth Man”. Born Dec. 29, 1969, Travis and his wife, Heather, have three children: Brooks, Kyleigh and Shane. Heather was a swimmer for the Kentucky Wildcats. Ford earned his bachelor of science degree in communications from the University of Kentucky in 1994.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT THE PRESEASON

Once the players arrive on campus for the fall semester, workouts begin that prepare the player for the demands of the daily in-season practices. This is a time for the player to improve his conditioning and his strength through a planned regiment of weight training. The players are also guided by the coaching staff and OSUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s athletic training staff on the basics of nutrition planning. There are also sessions held on the basketball court and in groups, the players are drilled on skill development and comprehension of the game by a member of the coaching staff. The drills give players a running start on practice sessions they will take part in beginning in mid-October.

THE SEASON

Once the season begins, weight lifting is cut back to allow a player to keep all the benefits of training gained in the preseason. Practice involves both individual and team practices with coaches working with individual players before and after practices. During practice, we concentrate on shooting, footwork, offensive breakdown and special situation drills, while team practices allow OSU players the chance to learn to work together with the entire squad in preparation for upcoming games. In season, there is a large emphasis placed on watching tape. Using the most advanced editing/scouting system available today, our coaching staff is able to show our players the positives/negatives of their game. In preparation for our opponents, it is safe to say that there will not be another team in the country more prepared than the OSU Cowboys.

THE POSTSEASON

Postseason workouts begin approximately two weeks following the conclusion of the season and continue until the end of the spring semester. Again, coaches will evaluate the areas in need of improvement and plan to address those needs. OSU players will also again work on a regular basis with the strength and conditioning staff for a specialized program designed for each player.

THE SUMMER

Even in the summer, the weight and conditioning program continues with an emphasis on improving speed, strength and conditioning. The team, with many of the new players beginning to take summer school classes, will usually gather to play pick-up games which also involve former Cowboys most afternoons and evenings.

BUTCH PIERRE ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH FIFTH YEAR AT OSU MISSISSIPPI STATE, 1984 It’s not hard to know where the best high school players have been the last decade. Just look no farther than the travel itinerary of coach Butch Pierre hot on the recruiting trail. He secured one of the top recruiting classes in the country in 2009, ranked as high as No. 4 by HoopScoopOnline.com. He was also instrumental in securing two McDonald’s All-Americans for the Cowboys. Pierre was a key factor in Oklahoma State’s resurgence to the national spotlight by helping return the Cowboys to the NCAA Tournament and advancing to the second round in 2009. The 2010 NCAA Tournament appearance marked the ninth time in his tenure that a team he’s coached for has made the Big Dance. Prior to OSU, Pierre spent 11 seasons at LSU, including six as the associate head coach. One of the elite assistant coaches and recruiters in college basketball, he has been called “one of the top assistants in the nation”. Pierre has recruited and played a key role in player development at every stop he’s coached. He’s coached such talents as Tyrus Thomas, the fourth overall lottery selection in the 2006 NBA Draft. Former Pierre players who are currently in the NBA are: Anthony Randolph (14th overall pick of the 2008 NBA draft and currently with the Minnesota Timberwolves), Glen “Big Baby” Davis (Boston Celtics), Marcus Thornton (Sacramento Kings), Chris Johnson (Portland Trailblazers), Brandon Bass (Orlando Magic) and Garrett Temple (Charlotte Bobcats). Others former Pierre players who made it in the NBA include: Stromile Swift, the second overall lottery pick in 2000, Ronald Dupree and Jabari Smith. Under Pierre, Swift, Bass and Davis all earned SEC Player of the Year honors and, during his tenure at LSU, four players received SEC Freshman of the Year honors while one was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year. Pierre played a pivotal role in the Tigers’ advancement to the Final Four in 2006. LSU defeated Texas A&M, top-ranked Duke and No. 2 seed Texas en route to Indianapolis before falling to UCLA in the national semifinals. All told, Pierre was involved in four NCAA appearances and two NIT tournaments with the Tigers. LSU also won two SEC Championships (2000, ‘06) and three SEC Western Division Championships (2000, ‘05, ‘06). Pierre is recognized by his peers in the industry as a relentless, innovative and extremely successful recruiter. His work ethic and attention to detail is what people have seen everywhere he has worked. At LSU, it helped him land four McDonald’s and nine Parade prep All-Americans, seven junior college AllAmericans and two players who earned national junior college Player of the Year honors. Pierre is also instrumental in practice planning and on-the-court practice drills with the team and spends countless hours in his office not only working on recruiting, but studying videos of practice and games, looking for things that can be improved upon. His superior technical basketball knowledge is used in practices and he also assists with the implementation of the Cowboys’ defensive schemes and philosophy.

Pierre has made a mark in coaching everywhere he has set up shop. He has also built and established a reputation throughout the country of turning losing into winning at each institution he has worked at throughout his career. Following a two-year stint at Kentucky State University (1986-88) where the school posted its first winning season in seven years, Pierre returned to the state of Louisiana at Louisiana-Lafayette, joining the Ragin’ Cajuns prior to the 1988-89 season. In his eight-year career there, his team won two Sun Belt Tournament titles (1992, ‘94), won the Sun Belt regular-season championship (1992) and played in two NCAA Tournaments. He also coached Kevin Brooks, the 18th overall selection of the 1991 NBA Draft who spent three seasons with the Denver Nuggets.

More than a dozen of his players went on to play professionally and he was elevated to the top assistants’ position in his second season on the Cajun staff. Pierre left south Louisiana to go to Charlotte for the 1996-97 season where he served for one season, putting together a top-10 recruiting class before heading to LSU. In his lone season with Charlotte, the 49ers won the Conference USA Western Division title and defeated Georgetown in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Pierre received his bachelor’s degree in education in 1984 and his master’s of education degree in 1986, both from Mississippi State. It has been Coach Pierre’s passion and mission to insure that every student-athlete he has recruited works diligently to complete his degree prior to his departure from the university. While successful in recruiting All-American athletes, he has seen these athletes have extraordinary athletic success and most of them have matriculated at their various institutions. A native of Darrow, La., Pierre was a prep and SEC standout in his playing days. At St. Amant High School, he was a prep All-American and the school retired his jersey in 1980. Pierre started four seasons as a point guard for Mississippi State. Butch and his wife, Clemmie, are parents of a daughter, Langley (a senior at LSU), and twin sons, Joseph III and Josh. CHRIS FERGUSON ASSISTANT COACH SIXTH YEAR AT OSU CUMBERLAND (KY.) COLLEGE, 1981 Chris Ferguson enters his sixth season on the Cowboy coaching staff. He came to Oklahoma State prior to the 2007-08 season after spending two seasons at East Carolina. He had been promoted to associate head coach of the Pirates before his departure to Stillwater. Ferguson was instrumental in Oklahoma State’s return to the NCAA Tournament in 2009 and ‘10. He played an integral part in signing one of the top recruiting classes in the country in 2009, ranking as high as No. 4 according to HoopScoopOnline.com. He also recruited current Cowboy Marcus Smart, a McDonald’s All-American.

Ferguson began his coaching career in 1982, working four years at Freedom High School in Morganton, N.C., beginning as an assistant under head coach Terry Rogers. Ferguson was a four-year basketball letterman, earning a pair of letters each at Central Wesleyan (S.C.) College and Cumberland (Ky.) College while helping both squads to NAIA National Tournament appearances.

Ferguson is well respected in the coaching fraternity as an up-and-comer where his strengths lie in his on-the-floor coaching abilities and his recruiting prowess. His energy and enthusiasm on the court is infectious, keeping pace with today’s youth. Ferguson joined the ECU staff in 2005 following an eight-year tenure with the Tennessee Volunteers dating back to the 1997-98 season, which began under coach Jerry Green. He was retained by coach Buzz Peterson when he was hired in 2001. Ferguson was quickly promoted to associate head coach two years later prior to the 2003-04 campaign. In his eight seasons in Knoxville, Ferguson helped lead the Vols to an impressive run of six consecutive postseason appearances, including fourconsecutive NCAA Tournament appearances (1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001). Tennessee advanced to the second round in 1999 before earning a Sweet 16 berth the following season. In all, Tennessee captured two Southeastern Conference Eastern Division titles and one overall SEC championship during his stay. While with the Vols, Ferguson was also credited with recruiting and coaching 11 different players who made All-SEC, three All-Americans, two SEC Players of the Year, four McDonald’s All-Americans, four NBA players and a lottery pick. Prior to arriving at Tennessee, Ferguson spent six years on Bill Foster’s staff at Virginia Tech from 1991 to 1997. While in Blacksburg, he played a key role in helping guide the Hokies to 63 victories in his last three seasons, including a 23-6 mark in 1995-96 which earned Virginia Tech an NCAA Tournament appearance. A year earlier, the Hokies produced a school-record 25 wins and an NIT title. Ferguson earned his first collegiate position in 1986 at UNC-Asheville, serving a one-year stint on Green’s Bulldog staff before moving north to Appalachian State. From 1987 to 1991, he worked under former Eddie Sutton assistant Tom Apke and helped lead the Mountaineers to upper division finishes in the Southern Conference his final three seasons before his appointment at Virginia Tech.

As a prep standout at Hendersonville (N.C.) High School, Ferguson was selected to the all-state unit and was named Western North Carolina Player of the Year in 1975. STEVE MIDDLETON ASSISTANT COACH FIFTH YEAR AT OSU SOUTHERN ILLINOIS, 1989 Steve Middleton enters his fifth season as an assistant coach at Oklahoma State and was the first hire by head coach Travis Ford as he followed him from Massachusetts. Middleton is well-respected as a recruiter across the country and has been very successful in the development of big men on the basketball court.

A Brooklyn, N.Y., native, Middleton graduated from Samuel J. Tilden High School. During his senior season, he led the Blue Devils to a 20-3 mark and a District 3 Championship. He averaged 24 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and three steals per game. As a result, he was selected to the All-Brooklyn squad and received a scholarship offer to attend Southern Illinois.

Middleton was a key component in returning the Cowboys to the NCAA Tournament in 2009 and ‘10. He was also vital as OSU brought in one of the top recruiting classes in 2009, ranked as high as No. 4 by HoopScoopOnline.com. Middleton spent three seasons at UMass with Ford. He was instrumental in the development of Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme as they emerged as national stars for the Minutemen as they advanced to the postseason for the first time in seven seasons in 2007. Lasme was a second-round draft selection of the Golden State Warriors after being named an honorable mention All-American as well as the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. He also tied the all-time NCAA record for triple-doubles in a season with four during the 2006-07 season. Freeman became the Atlantic 10’s first three-time first-team all-league selection since Saint Joseph’s Jameer Nelson, a name familiar to followers of Cowboy Basketball. Freeman finished fourth in career scoring (1,744 points) at UMass and third in rebounds (998). Middleton was instrumental in both players’ success as part of the Minutemen’s Atlantic 10 regular-season championship in 2006-07. He also recruited and mentored Gary Forbes, the 2007 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, as well as three-year starting point guard Chris Lowe at UMass during its 2007-08 NIT Finals run. Middleton joined the UMass staff in 2005 after three seasons as an assistant for Ford at Eastern Kentucky. He was a key ingredient in the Colonels’ rise to an Ohio Valley Conference Tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth in 2005 with a school-record 22 victories. Prior to joining Ford’s staff at EKU, Middleton spent nine seasons as the head coach at St. Mary High School in Paducah, Ky. He compiled a 126-122 mark in his nine seasons, including an 81-35 record during his last four years at the helm of the Vikings. He led St. Mary to a 23-6 record in 1999 and the school’s first state tournament appearance. For his efforts, he was named the Paducah Sun’s Purchase Area Coach of the Year. While at St. Mary, Middleton also served as the school’s director of athletics and was a physical education and health teacher. He was the first and remains the only black male coach of a varsity high school basketball team in Region 1 history. He also led the team to four-consecutive Class A regional titles during his stint at St. Mary.

Middleton was a four-year letterman for the Salukis and was a two-time first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection as a junior and senior. He led the team in scoring his final three seasons, including a 25.4 points-pergame average as a senior which ranks as the second-highest in school history. Middleton had eight 30-point games during his career, including a career-high 42 against Bradley which still ranks as the third-most in a game in school history. He was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 1996. Middleton was drafted by the Long Island Knights of the United States Basketball League (USBL) in 1988. After a brief professional career which also included a stint in the Continental Basketball Association, he returned to Southern Illinois and earned two degrees — a bachelor’s degree in history with a concentration in Afro-American history in 1989 and a master’s degree in education-recreation in 1992. While earning his master’s degree, Middleton began his coaching career in 1989 as a graduate assistant with the Salukis’ women’s program. He served as the head coach at Golconda Civilian Conservation Center in 1990. From 1991 until 1992, he worked as a health educator in the Alexander & Pulaski Counties schools and communities in southern Illinois. As a health educator, Middleon focused on ‘Health Issues in Black America’, in which he participated in many health conferences as a speaker. During this time, he was also heavily involved with Amateur Athletic Union basketball programs in southern Illinois.

Tommy Wade enters his fifth season as the director of player development at Oklahoma State. He joined Coach Ford’s staff after spending time as the head coach at Oklahoma City University. Wade, who came to Oklahoma State after a three-year stint at Oklahoma City, had been a member of the Stars’ coaching staff during their back-to-back NAIA Division I championship seasons. With Wade’s assistance, OCU went 95-17 with three NAIA national title game appearances, three Sooner Athletic Conference championships and two SAC Tournament titles in three seasons. He also coached six All-Americans. Prior to OCU, Wade was an assistant at Kentucky Wesleyan, which won the 2001 NCAA Division II championship, reached four national championship games, won three regular-season Great Lakes Valley Conference crowns, three conference tournament titles and posted four 30-win seasons in six years. Kentucky Wesleyan went 161-24 during Wade’s tenure as an assistant. Wade has coached as an assistant at OCU, Kentucky Wesleyan, Missouri State, Murray State, South Alabama and St. Catherine College in Kentucky. He began his coaching career at Hopkinsville University Heights Academy in Kentucky, where he directed the team to the Class A state championship in 1991. Wade has been a part of three NCAA Tournament teams. At South Alabama, Wade aided in winning two Sun Belt Conference championships and two NCAA Tournament berths working as an assistant coach for Bill Musselman and Bob Weltich. Wade was also part of an Ohio Valley Conference championship team at Murray State. A native of Hopkinsville, Ky., Wade was an all-state player at Hopkinsville High School as a senior in 1975. He played basketball at Murray State his freshman and sophomore seasons and transferred to Southeast Missouri State for his junior and senior years. His basketball career continued by playing professionally in Argentina for three years and one season in Europe before entering the coaching ranks.

Entering his seventh season as the speed, strength and conditioning coach for the Cowboy Basketball program is Jake Manzelmann. It is his second stint at Oklahoma State as he worked as a graduate assistant during the 2004-05 season working primarily with the football and women’s basketball programs. Manzelmann has transformed several Cowboys through conditioning and strength training. Byron Eaton, who weighed in at 248 pounds when Coach Ford arrived in Stillwater, went on a strict diet and workout regimen under Manzelmann’s supervision. By the time the season began, Eaton was competing at his ideal playing weight of 205 pounds throughout his senior season. Conversely, Manzelmann can also transform players in the opposite direction. Marshall Moses arrived at OSU weighing 213 pounds, but after three years, began his senior year at 255 and became a dominant big man in the Big 12. In just three short months after his arrival in Stillwater as a freshman, Le’Bryan Nash put on 15 pounds of muscle and was quickly ready to battle at the collegiate level. During the one-year hiatus from Stillwater, Manzelmann spent a season as an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the football program at Texas Tech. While in Lubbock, he was also the strength and conditioning coach for the Lubbock minor league hockey team, for which he still works as a consultant. Manzelmann initially came to Oklahoma State from Northeastern University in Boston, Mass., where he worked specifically with the football, women’s basketball, and men’s & women’s hockey teams. A graduate of Northeastern Oklahoma State University in Tahlequah, Manzelmann is a certified strength & conditioning coach (CSCC) and is strength & conditioning coach certified (SCCC). Manzelmann and his wife, the former Taylor Hardeman, were married on May 18, 2012. Taylor played basketball for the Cowgirls from 2005-09.

Wade earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Southeast Missouri State in 1992.

Entering his seventh season as the assistant athletic director for basketball is Joseph Biggs. He oversees travel, budget, scheduling, special events, and all other administrative and operational functions of the Cowboy Basketball program. Biggs previously oversaw all marketing efforts of the Oklahoma State athletic department since the beginning of the 2002-03 academic year. He was responsible for season ticket campaigns, ticket office operations, merchandising, internet operation, contracts/vendor relationships, and all game-day staging. During his tenure, OSU set an all-time record for football season ticket sales in 2004, as well as records for total ticket revenues, merchandise revenues, multimedia rights revenues and soft-drink revenues. Prior to his arrival at Oklahoma State, Biggs served as associate director of athletics/external affairs at Emporia State University for two years. He was in charge of all fund-raising, development, marketing, corporate sales, ticketing campaigns and media relations activities. Biggs also oversaw successful funding efforts to begin a women’s soccer program. During his era, Emporia State athletics established all-time marks for annual monies raised and total revenues generated. He also served as director of development for the Tulsa Sports Commission from May of 1999 to September of 2000. Biggs served as an assistant basketball coach and an assistant athletic director at Ottawa University from 1996-99. He earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Ottawa in 1997. He participated in basketball and golf while attending Ottawa. He received his master’s degree in sports administration from Kansas in 1998. Born May 3, 1975, Joey and his wife, Michelle, have been married for 10 years. The couple has two daughters, Jenika and Jackelynn.

Brian Lucas enters his third season on Travis Ford’s staff serving as the team’s video coordinator. Upon his arrival, he transformed the physical landscape of the video suite with state-of-the-art equipment and multiple working stations. In such a short period, his efforts have produced a video atmosphere that is now regarded as one of the premier video programs in the country. His duties include breaking down film of self-scout to help ensure improvement with individual players and team concepts, opponent-scout for the coaches to prepare a game plan of the opponent team’s style of play and individual player tendencies, maintaining a video database, coordinating film exchange with Oklahoma State’s opponents, constructing motivational recruiting videos, and managing the filming of all practices, individuals, conditionings and games. Lucas came to OSU from the University of Florida, where he spent the previous four seasons. He served as the assistant video coordinator for the Gator men’s basketball program studying under two-time national champion coach Billy Donovan for three seasons. During his tenure, his main tasks consisted of constructing self and opponent scout edits, producing highlight videos and filming practices and games. In addition to his regular duties, he changed the way games were logged into the video software by instituting ‘hot keys’ that allowed the process to be more efficient and detailed breaking down games for the coaching staff. Previously, he volunteered with Florida’s women’s basketball team under head coach Carolyn Peck during the 2006-07 season as the assistant video coordinator to gain basketball experience. Lucas earned his bachelor’s degree in sports management from Florida in 2008 and received his master’s degree in sports management from UF in 2010. Born on Mother’s Day on May 12, 1985, Lucas graduated from Selinsgrove Area High School in Pennsylvania in 2003. He played both basketball and tennis in high school.

Mary Lee tremendously enjoys her affiliation with OSU Athletics, which began in 1985 as executive assistant to Athletic Director Myron Roderick. Opportunity then took Mary Lee to be Stillwater District Office Manager for Congressman Wes Watkins.

Entering his seventh season as the athletic trainer for the Cowboy Basketball program is Jason Miller. Miller came to OSU from the University of Washington, where he served as the athletic trainer for the Huskies baseball and football teams in 2005-06.

She returned to OSU Athletics, as Coach Eddie Sutton ‘recruited’ Mary Lee in October of 1990 to join his Cowboy Basketball administrative staff, where she remained throughout his tenure. She continued on as executive assistant to Coach Sean Sutton. Mary Lee currently is greatly enjoying her fourth year as executive assistant to coach Travis Ford and the OSU Cowboy Basketball team.

Before taking the position in Seattle, Miller was the athletic trainer for the national champion Connecticut Huskies basketball team from 2002-05.

Among Mary Lee’s favorite duties with the Cowboy Basketball program is being advisor to the men’s basketball support organization SPURS. She is delighted that this year, Coach Ford’s wife Heather joined her as an advisor. Mary Lee has two children, Cherie Leean and Dan, III, and three grandchildren: Anna, Sterling and Caroline, who reside in Owasso, Okla. Mary Lee is a graduate of Stillwater High School, Oklahoma State University, Leadership Stillwater and Leadership Oklahoma. She attends Life Church and greatly enjoys traveling with family and friends.

Originally from Clarion, Iowa, Miller earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science from the University of Iowa in 1995 where he also worked within the Hawkeye athletic department and with the men’s basketball program. Miller received his master’s degree in higher education administration from Auburn University while working with the Tiger football program. He worked with the Auburn football and men’s basketball teams for four years. Miller was the head ATC for the 2005 USA men’s basketball under-21 team during its competition in Argentina. During the summer of 2010, he once again worked for USA Basketball, serving as the ATC for the men’s World University Games team which won the bronze medal. He and his wife, Teresa, enjoy spending time with their family. The couple had their first child, Henry, on March 30, 2011. Jason also enjoys hiking and woodworking in his spare time.

Entering his sixth year at Oklahoma State, Dr. Val Gene Iven oversees all Cowboy and Cowgirl athletic health care out of OSU’s sports medicine/athletic training facility in the Athletics Center. Dr. Iven returned to Oklahoma State in May of 2007 after serving 13 years as the team physician for the Tennessee Volunteers, the longest period for anyone in the Eastern Division of the Southeastern Conference. A native of Pond Creek, Okla., Dr. Iven earned his B.S. from Oklahoma State in 1985. He received his M.D. in 1989 from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. After completing a family medicine residency, he was the first primary care sports medicine fellow at Oklahoma. Iven is board certified in family medicine and has a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine, American Medical Society of Sports Medicine, Oklahoma Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Physicians where he was recently also designated as a Fellow. He and his wife, the former Angela Hight of Oklahoma City, have two children: a daughter, Austyn, and a son, Carson.

Dr. Marilyn Middlebrook joined the athletics department in 1997. She has worked in student services on the OSU campus for more than 25 years, and was director of student services in the OSU College of Education before coming to athletics. Middlebrook is a mother-away-from-home for OSU student-athletes and strives, along with the rest of the ASSA staff, to create a positive and encouraging environment for all who walk into the Academic Enhancement Center. Middlebrook’s goal, besides academic success and NCAA/Big 12 compliance, is to produce well-rounded individuals ready to enter the professional world after graduation. Middlebrook is a graduate of Emporia State University, where she also earned her master’s degree. She completed work on her doctorate in education at Oklahoma State. Middlebrook and her husband, Dan, have three children: Bruce & his wife, Melissa, Amy & her husband, Danny, and Brad and his wife, Emily; and nine grandchildren: Halley Jo, Riley, Luke, Natalie, Maggie, Molly, Jolie, Brady and Jett.

Learning Specialist, Academic Center 11th Year at OSU Oklahoma State, 1994

Mike Noteware is entering his 22nd year with the Athletic Media Relations office and his 17th as a full-time staff member. He is an associate director of media relations and has been the men’s basketball contact for the past 12 seasons. Noteware also directs Oklahoma State’s information services for the Cowgirl softball program, as well as assisting with football and OSU’s other 15 sports. He began working in the media relations department in 1991 as a student assistant and was promoted to graduate assistant in 1994. He was named coordinator of media relations in October of 1996. The Tulsa, Okla., native has been the primary contact for two-thirds of OSU’s 18 sports at some point in his career. He was the sport contact for softball during its three visits to the Women’s College World Series in 1994, ‘98 and 2011, as well as the baseball SID during its 1997 College World Series appearance. Other highlights have included the 2004 Final Four trip, the Cotton Bowl and a national runner-up finish by the Cowgirl golf team that same season. A graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in 1989, Noteware graduated from Oklahoma State in 1993 with a degree in statistics, as well as a minor in business administration and Spanish. Mike and his wife, Susan, celebrated their fourth anniversary this past July. The couple has a yellow lab, Wyatt, and a golden retriever, Norman. Mike is the son of Carol Strout and the late Carson Noteware. He has a sister, Shelley, and two nephews: Michael, a junior pitcher at Bellevue University in Nebraska, and Taylor, a junior at Charles Page High School and a volunteer firefighter.

In her position, she teaches important study skills, such as time management and organization, with the goal of helping them excel as students. Randolph served as a tutor for student-athletes as an undergraduate student at Oklahoma State in 1992. She continued tutoring and facilitating studentathletes part-time until becoming a full-time staff member four years ago. After earning her bachelor of arts degree in Spanish and a bachelor of science degree in foreign language education, Randolph spent four years as a middle school Spanish teacher. She returned to school and earned her master’s degree in international studies in 2001. Amy and her husband of 16 years, Danny, have three children: Halley, Riley and Luke. Halley is the starting catcher for the Stillwater High School varsity softball team and also plays basketball. Riley plays soccer and is also an amazing dancer. Luke spends his free time playing baseball, basketball, football and golf. Randolph also finds time to teach fitness classes — weight training, indoor cycling and Pilates — at GymOne in Stillwater. She spends most of her free time at sporting events, but does enjoy relaxing with a good book when the opportunity presents itself.

Mark S. Pascale, M.D., is the head team orthopaedic surgeon for Oklahoma State’s varsity sports teams. Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, he practices at the McBride Clinic and Bone and Joint Hospital in Oklahoma City. He is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the Arthroscopy Association of North America and has published numerous articles on sports medicine and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Pascale graduated summa cum laude from Florida State in 1977 with a B.S. in chemistry, and then attended medical school at Florida, graduating with honors in 1981. He and his wife, Renee, have three sons: Nicholas, Blaise and Luke; and a daughter, Madeleine.

After four successful years as a member of the Cowboy Basketball team, Keiton Page has joined the staff as an assistant strength & conditioning coach. A four-year letterman at Oklahoma State, Page holds the school records for most three-pointers made (299) and attempted (812) in a career. He finished with 1,651 career points, ranking seventh on that OSU list. Page became just the third player in school history to record 1,500 points, 300 assists and 100 steals in a career. Page’s career-high 40 points against Texas last season propelled the Cowboys to a 90-78 win over the Longhorns. For his efforts, he was named the Big 12 Conference’s Player of the Week. He is also the only player in school history to have defeated a No. 1 (Kansas) and No. 2 (Missouri) ranked team in his career. Page was a two-time All-Big 12 selection and a two-time Academic All-Big 12 first-team honoree. He graduated from OSU with a degree in physical education in May of 2012.

One of the most unique and successful academic support programs in the country is in place at Oklahoma State University. With a focus on individualized attention, OSUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s student-athletes continue to raise the bar in the classroom. OSU is one of the few academic programs in America that does not utilize a study hall for its student-athletes. Instead, the academic course and progress is charted on an individual basis with stunning results.

TECHNOLOGY The Academic Enhancement Center boasts more than 100 individual desktop computers in three labs, all with internet access, campus network access, and locally networked printers. Also available on a limited basis are more than 40 personal laptop computers for use during team travel.

MISSION STATEMENT Academic Services for Student-Athletes provides academic, personal and career support programs that foster the development of student-athletes. A comprehensive program on life skills provides student-athletes with educational experiences and service programs that prepare them for the demands of a well-balanced lifestyle while providing guidance and direction needed to prepare student-athletes for success beyond graduation.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT ASSA offers academic tutoring in all course areas, employing a staff of more than 100 subject tutors and 40 academic facilitators. Most tutors are graduate students or professionals from the Stillwater community.

CAREER SERVICES ASSA employs a career counselor available to OSU student-athletes during weekday evenings. The career counselor works with student-athletes to develop resumes, create professional portfolios, select majors and careers, and ultimately find employment after graduation.

THE JOE AND CONNIE MITCHELL ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER The Joe and Connie Mitchell Academic Enhancement Center houses three computer labs and more than 100 computers for OSU’s student-athletes. The center is part of the OSU Athletics Center, providing unmatched convenience for the hectic studentathlete lifestyle. The center includes five review session rooms, nine private tutoring rooms, a writing center, a foreign languages center and a learning specialist center. The center is home to 12 full-time employees of OSU’s academic support unit, along with more than 100 tutors. Many of the tutors are retired faculty and candidates for advanced degrees.

Some have gone on to play basketball professionally after their collegiate careers, while other have gone into the private sector. The historic building underwent a massive $56 million construction project and is the focal part of the OSU Athletics Center. Originally named Gallagher Hall after OSU’s fabled wrestling coach Ed Gallagher, the Board of Regents honored legendary Cowboy Basketball coach Henry Iba when the arena was remodeled in 1987, and his name was added to the arena’s title. Gallagher served as OSU’s wrestling coach from 1916-40. In his 23 years, OSU won 11 national championships and compiled a 138-5-4 dual record. Gallagher was also an outstanding athlete while attending then Oklahoma A&M. He was captain of the track team for three years, and his 99-yard run against Kansas State in 1908 will always stand as the longest football run in school history. Iba, who passed away in January of 1993, was a coaching giant in the sport of basketball. He coached in 1,105 collegiate games, and his 767 career wins were the second most to Adolph Rupp when he retired in 1970. Iba served as coach and athletic director at OSU from 1935-70, and in those 36 seasons, posted a 655-316 record while guiding the Cowboys to 13 league championships, eight NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1945 and 1946 NCAA Championships.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING In one of the nation’s largest facilities, strength coach Jake Manzelmann has the tools necessary to build NBA-caliber athletes. A 25,000 square-foot facility encompassed by its own indoor running track makes OSU’s weight room one of the biggest in the country. A staff of 10 full-time employees assures that the athletes are well taken care of. Speed, strength and conditioning has become a year-round part of becoming a successful athlete. Coach Manzelmann and the strength & conditioning staff are here to assure that the athletes receive the best instruction available. Coach Manzelmann and athletic trainer Jason Miller work closely together not only to rehabilitate injuries, but to prevent them as well.

SPORTS MEDICINE The health care of Oklahoma State’s student-athletes is the top priority of a professional staff that includes physicians, athletic trainers and certified graduate assistants. Dr. Val Gene Iven, an OSU who spent 13 years as the team physician for men’s athletics at the University of Tennessee, has an office in the OSU athletics Center and oversees all health care for the athletic department. OSU athletes have access to a statewide network of specialized physicians. Dr. Iven, along with director of sports medicine John Stemm, coordinates a staff of six full-time athletic trainers and seven graduate assistants. OSU also features a certified athletic training program for students. OSU staffers also include active-release certification (massage therapy) and a certified physical therapist.

ATHLETIC HISTORY

Oklahoma State’s department of intercollegiate athletics has long been known as one of the most tradition-rich programs in the country — not just in one or two sports, but throughout its program. OSU has accumulated 50 NCAA national championships over the years, the fourth-most in NCAA history. Only Stanford, USC and UCLA own more national titles. Individually, more than 170 OSU student-athletes have won national titles. While competing in the Big Eight Conference, the Cowboys and Cowgirls won 135 team titles and crowned 500 individual conference champions. Most recently, the men’s cross country team made a trip to the White House after earning its second-consecutive NCAA Championship in 2010. It was the harriers’ second all-time national title and the school’s 50th overall. The Oklahoma State equestrian team, in just its second year of existence, won the IHSA national championship in 2000, the highest level of competition for the sport.

The program has also produced two of the game’s best collegiate players, Pete Incaviglia and Robin Ventura. One of the game’s most revered power hitters, Incaviglia rewrote the NCAA record books en route to being named the “Player of the Century” by Baseball America. After amassing a 58-game hitting streak, Ventura earned “Player of the Decade” honors and finished third in the player of the century voting. Under the tutelage of former skipper Gary Ward, the team was a model of consistency, setting NCAA records for consecutive conference tournament titles (16) and consecutive CWS appearances (seven). In 1999, the Cowboys returned to familiar territory with their first trip to Omaha under the direction of head coach Tom Holliday and in 2007 were regional champions under Frank Anderson. Oklahoma State made its seventh appearance in the Women’s College World Series in 2011, the first under head coach Rich Wieligman. The Cowgirls rank seventh nationally in WCWS appearances all-time.

Legendary coach Henry Iba assembled one of the nation’s first men’s basketball powerhouses at OSU, then Oklahoma A&M, in the 1940s. His 1945 and 1946 teams were the first in NCAA history to win back-to-back national championships. The Cowboys returned to the national scene under one of Mr. Iba’s former pupils, Hall of Fame nominee Eddie Sutton. Under Sutton, OSU made 13 NCAA Tournament appearances in 16 seasons, including six trips to the Sweet 16 and two appearances in the Final Four. The last Final Four appearance came in 2004.

The Cowboy wrestling team is among the most storied programs in all of college athletics. OSU’s 34 team titles are the most ever collected by any school in one sport. The Cowboys have also produced 134 individual national champions, including the sport’s first-ever four-time champion, Pat Smith. Priding itself on producing talented running backs, greats such as Bob Fenimore, Ernest Anderson, Terry Miller, Thurman Thomas, Vernand Morency, Tatum Bell and 1988 Heisman Trophy winner Barry Sanders have roamed the backfield at “Tailback U”. The Cowboy baseball program is one of the most successful in the country. OSU has made the trek to the College World Series 19 times, fifth most in NCAA history, winning the national title in 1959. Olympic gold medalist John Smith heads up the Cowboy wrestling program.

The Cowgirl basketball squad has had its share of postseason action as well. The program that has played in eight NCAA tournaments and made Sweet 16 appearances in 1993 and 2008. The Cowgirls finished the 2007-08 school year with a program-best No. 11 ranking in the final Associated Press poll. Most recently, OSU won the 2012 WNIT Championship One of golf’s finest venues, Karsten Creek, serves as the backdrop for two of college golf’s premier programs. Opened in 1994, the Tom Fazio layout was named Golf Digest’s “Best New Public Course”. In 1998, the course was one of only 10 in the nation to be awarded a five-star rating. The course served as the host site for the men’s NCAA Championship in both 2003 and 2011.

The men’s squad qualified for the NCAA Championship in 65 straight seasons, a feat unmatched by any other program in the country. In those seasons, the team has won an astounding 54 conference championships. The Cowgirls have made 21 NCAA appearances and won 21 conference titles. OSU has won six Big 12 Championships since 2001, and was the NCAA runner-up in 2004. The Cowgirls have remained title contenders, including a Big 12 title in 2009 and the school’s first female individual national champion in Caroline Hedwall.

OSU won two straight Big 12 men’s basketball tournaments, a regular-season title and made a Final Four appearance (2004) over a two-year period. Since 1983, more than 50 All-Americans, four NCAA champions, one worldrecord holder and an Olympian have emerged from the men’s track and field program. The men’s cross country team has also contributed to the legion of national titles with its victory at the 1954 national meet.

Robin Ventura is one of the greatest players in NCAA baseball history.

The women’s program has produced numerous All-Americans and conference champions, led by 1988 Olympian Christine McMiken’s nine conference championships and eight All-America honors. Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams finished in the top 10 in 2005. The OSU tennis teams have consistently been front-runners in conference and national competition. On the men’s side, the Cowboys have 12 Big Eight titles and more than 120 individual conference champions to their credit. Included in that group is threetime national champion Pavel Kudrnac. OSU has nine Sweet 16 appearances. Beginning with the 1980 season, the women’s team put together an impressive string of 11 consecutive conference crowns and has finished among the top 10 nationally on a regular basis.

THE BIG DANCE Oklahoma State returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2009, its first tourney since a Sweet 16 appearance in 2005. Byron Eaton’s drive and layup with less than 10 seconds remaining gave the Cowboys a 77-75 victory over Tennessee in the first round and was a highlight of CBS’s “One Shining Moment”. OSU trailed by just two points with less than two minutes remaining in a loss to top-seeded Pittsburgh. The Cowboys made another tourney trip in 2010, giving OSU consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament in Coach Ford’s first two seasons at Oklahoma State.

THE COWBOY LIFESTYLE The day-to-day living for student-athletes at Oklahoma State rivals that of any campus in the country. Most Cowboys are housed on campus in spacious apartments that include living areas, private bedrooms, a full kitchen, washer and dryer, free local phone, free cable television and free internet access. The apartments are located on north Monroe, a short walk from the Gallagher-Iba Arena and academic support center, as well as the academic heart of the OSU campus. OSU student-athletes also enjoy one of America’s top training tables. With a chef dedicated to the basketball menu and with the training table located inside Boone Pickens Stadium, Cowboys and Cowgirls have the best of both worlds – great food in a convenient location. Beginning in August 2008, OSU became one of the only schools in the country to provide oversized beds for its athletes. Each apartment is furnished with a custom athletic bedding system. The beds are 95 inches in length and over 54 inches in width, meaning even the tallest and largest OSU athletes will be completely supported for a comfortable night’s sleep.

UNIVERSITY HISTORY

The story of Oklahoma State University began on Christmas Eve, 1890, at the McKennon Opera House in Oklahoma’s territorial capital of Guthrie when Territorial Governor George W. Steele signed legislation establishing an Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College (OAMC) in Payne County. OAMC’s first students assembled for class on Dec. 14, 1891, even though there were no buildings, no books, and no curriculum. The college’s first students attended classes in the Stillwater Congregational Church. The original campus consisted of 200 acres of prairie that were donated by four local homesteaders. The college’s first six graduates received their diplomas in 1896. Visitors to the OSU campus often marvel at its beauty and consistency of architecture. Much of the credit goes to legendary president, Henry G. Bennett, who served from 1928-1951. Dr. Bennett’s 25-year campus master plan envisioned some of the university’s most famous and beautiful structures, including the Edmon Low Library and the OSU Student Union. A new campus master plan is guiding unprecedented construction that is making OSU more competitive in academics and athletics. Starting in the fall of 2008, OSU has opened the

new Multimodal Transportation Terminal, the new North Classroom Building, the west end zone of Boone Pickens Stadium, refurbished Old Central, the Donald W. Reynolds Architecture Building and an upgraded Murray Hall. It has opened the new Henry Bellmon Research Center and is nearing completion on a major renovation of the Student Union. Hall of Fame Avenue on the north and University Avenue on the south have both been significantly upgraded, and the university has started an update to its campus landscape plan. OSU grew quite rapidly following World War II. The post-war years were marked by a huge enrollment surge. Some graduates from that era may remember “Veteran’s Village,” a thriving community that developed on the northwest edge of campus as veterans and their families moved into surplus military housing provided by the college. The mid-1940s also were a golden era for athletics at Oklahoma A&M. In a 90-day period in early 1945, A&M teams won the Cotton Bowl, the NCAA championship in wrestling, and the NCAA championship in basketball. The next year, the wrestling and basketball teams repeated as national champions, and the football team won the Sugar Bowl. Coaches and players from that era are now sports legends. Coach Henry Iba set a national standard in basketball and Edward Gallagher took his wrestling teams to international prominence.

By the 1950s, the college had grown substantially. In 1957, Oklahoma A&M became The Oklahoma State University for Agriculture and Applied Science. During the next three decades, OSU would build academic programs to match its new status. Enrollment more than doubled from 10,385 in 1957 to more than 23,000 in the 1980s. OSU became a statewide university system, adding branches in Okmulgee in 1946 and Oklahoma City in 1961. OSU merged with the Oklahoma College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1988, and OSU-Tulsa was born in 1999. Today, OSU has more than 35,000 students across five campuses and a presence in every Oklahoma county through its extension offices and experiment stations. From six graduates in 1896, to nearly 5,000 annually today, the small college on the prairie has grown and prospered far beyond the dreams of its founders. OSU teaching, research and graduates are making a bigger impact on the lives of people around the world than ever before. It’s a great time to be a Cowboy!

PRESIDENT BURNS HARGIS University President

Burns Hargis was named the 18th President of Oklahoma State University and the OSU System in December 2007 and took office March 10, 2008. Hargis oversees one of the nation’s most comprehensive land-grant university systems with more than 35,000 students, 7,400 employees, and campuses located in Stillwater, Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Okmulgee. He has guided OSU to record fundraising and is leading the $1 billion Branding Success campaign focused on student scholarships, faculty and other vital resources and programs. He also is overseeing a construction boom that is transforming the OSU campus to be more competitive in academics and athletics. Hargis has a bold vision of creating a modern land-grant university that cuts across disciplines to better prepare students for success. Hargis, who holds degrees in accounting from Oklahoma State University and in law from the University of Oklahoma, is the second OSU graduate to lead the university as president. Oliver S. Willham, who served as president from 1952 to 1966, graduated from then Oklahoma A&M in 1923.

Before being named OSU President, Hargis had a long and distinguished legal and business career, with active civic and philanthropic leadership across many fronts. He also is familiar to many Oklahomans through the political perspective and wit he provided on the award-winning television program “Flashpoint”. Prior to coming to OSU, he was Vice Chairman of Bank of Oklahoma, N.A. Before joining Bank of Oklahoma in 1997, Hargis practiced law in Oklahoma City for 28 years, most recently with the firm of McAfee & Taft. He is a former president of the Oklahoma County Bar Association, former president of the Oklahoma Bar Foundation, and is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. Hargis served as vice-chairman of the Oklahoma State Election Board, the Oklahoma Constitutional Revision Commission, and served as Chairman of the Oklahoma Commission for Human Services. He is a former member of the Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Hargis was a candidate for the Republican nomination for Governor of Oklahoma in 1990. A firm believer in the power of imagination and collaboration, Hargis was the first chair of the Oklahoma Creativity Project. He has served and chaired many boards, including the Board of Regents for the Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical Colleges of Oklahoma State University. Hargis received the state’s highest honor when he was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 2009. Hargis and his wife, Ann, have two married children and three grandchildren.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS MIKE HOLDER Vice President for Athletics Programs/ Athletic Director Mike Holder hit the ground running when he was named Vice President for Athletic Programs and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Oklahoma State University on Sept. 16, 2005. In his 32 years of leading his alma mater’s golf program, Holder’s name became synonymous with success not only on the golf course, but in fundraising, facility development and the academic performance of his student-athletes. In fact, a case could be made that Holder took Oklahoma State’s already strong golf program and transformed it into America’s best. Those same leadership skills have served him well in his time guiding OSU’s athletic department. His plan and vision for the betterment of Cowboy and Cowgirl athletics have already taken shape, most notably with the completion of Boone Pickens Stadium. The stadium, now a horseshoe with more than 60,000 seats, features more than 100 suites. Under Holder’s direction, the Oklahoma State University Department of Athletics has continued to move forward while maintaining its traditional strengths. A total of 12 OSU sports programs have reached the national top 10 over the last two years. At the same time, the Cowboy football team has appeared in five straight bowl games for the first time in school history. OSU has won four more national team championships under Holder’s watch, raising the school’s championship count to 50 – the fourth best total in the country and tops in the Big 12 Conference. Holder’s tenure has also featured landmark fundraising by the athletic department, including the $165 million gift from T. Boone Pickens that pushed OSU’s facility drive into high gear. The legendary OSU alum also helped complete the west end zone project with another $63 million gift in 2008. At Holder’s urging, OSU Athletics has placed a new emphasis on scholarship endowments. That endowment drive has seen Oklahoma State climb from dead last in the Big 12 to second with gifts and commitments of approximately $35 million. Just four years ago, OSU’s endowment stood at $2.1 million. Perhaps Holder’s adept fundraising stems from his “fund-giving”. He and his wife, Robbie, illustrated their commitment to Oklahoma State when they donated $500,000 for the first fully endowed scholarship for Cowboy football. The scholarship is named for former OSU player, the late Vernon Grant. The Holders’ lifetime giving to OSU surpasses $2.5 million, including $1 million for an entrepreneurship super chair at OSU in the Spears School of Business. “Robbie and I made the gift to the college of business because of (OSU donors) Malone and Amy Mitchell,” Holder said at the announcement. “Having two degrees in business was the icing on the cake. I would like to see the new program nationally recognized and make a difference in the lives of young people.” Malone and Amy Mitchell had made a $57.2 million gift to OSU, split evenly between athletics and academics, on the day the Holders announced their $1 million gift. Things are on the upswing at the turnstiles as well. Oklahoma State set new school records in 2008 and 2009 in football season ticket sales reaching nearly 46,000 in 2009. The six largest crowds in OSU football history visited Boone Pickens Stadium in 2009 and 2010. Holder smoothly administered his first high-profile job search when Oklahoma State went looking for a men’s basketball coach. The pressure was on to fill a position that had been occupied by two of the winningest coaches in college basketball history in Henry Iba and Eddie Sutton. Holder tabbed Travis Ford for the job and the first-year

coach immediately validated the decision by taking OSU to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2005 as the Cowboys advanced to the second round with a thin roster that battled to the very end. Ford’s second year in Stillwater also resulted in an NCAA Tournament trip. Another Holder hire, softball coach Rich Wieligman, took the Cowgirls to the Women’s College World Series in his fifth season at the helm. And women’s soccer coach Colin Carmichael, who took over the Cowgirl soccer program during Holder’s tenure, guided Oklahoma State to within a game of the final four in 2010. OSU has won the Big 12 regular season or postseason soccer title in each of the last three years. During his tenure as the men’s golf coach, Holder’s successes included not only his team’s results on the course, but his players’ performances in the classroom and beyond. His vision and fundraising abilities resulted in the creation of Karsten Creek, a magnificent golf course in Stillwater, selected as the Best New Public Course in 1994 by Golf Digest magazine. That publication listed Karsten Creek as the nation’s 12th “greatest public course” in 2011. In 2000, Holder’s Cowboy golf team claimed the national championship, marking the eighth time his squad carried home the NCAA trophy. And while high national finishes are the norm at Oklahoma State, the accomplishments of his teams never stopped at the 18th hole. Holder took over his OSU coaching post on July 1, 1973, and during his tenure, his teams set student-athlete standards that were unequaled. While he coached more than 110 All-America selections, including 38 first-team choices, and has numerous former players competing on the PGA Tour, overseas and on mini-tours, Holder saw to it that his players also excelled in the classroom. During his tenure, OSU produced three Ben Hogan Award winners, which is based on academic and athletic excellence nationwide. Kevin Wentworth earned the honor in 1990, Trip Kuehne claimed the prestigious award in 1995 and Hunter Mahan was named the 2003 recipient. Kuehne was OSU’s outstanding male graduate in 1995 as well. Only 14 times since 1984 has a golfer been named first-team athletic All-America and academic All-America in the same season, and nine of those student-athletes were from Oklahoma State. Holder had 21 academic All-America selections from the inception of that honor in 1984 until he vacated the head coaching position for the AD’s chair, as well as countless academic all-Big Eight and all-Big 12 selections. Holder is one of five coaches in NCAA history, regardless of sport, to win a national championship in four different decades. Three times Holder coached the Cowboys to the national team title the same year an OSU individual also claimed medalist honors (1978, 1987 and 2000). Along the way, he claimed 25 conference championships. His 21 Big Eight championships were the second most by a head coach in any sport, trailing only Kansas basketball coach Phog Allen. As a student-athlete, Holder was the 1970 Big Eight medalist and led OSU to the conference team title. He was a third-team All-American as a junior and a senior and an honorable mention All-American as a sophomore. Holder, a graduate of Ardmore High School, earned his degree in marketing from Oklahoma State in 1970 and completed work on his MBA at OSU in 1973.

Oklahoma State has won 50 NCAA championships to rank fourth in the country and tops in the Big 12.

JANUARY, MARCH AND JUNE Oklahoma State is one of only three Big 12 schools to have made appearances in a BCS bowl game, the men’s basketball Final Four, the College World Series and the Women’s College World Series since the inception of the league.

IT TAKES TWO Stillwater was the home of college basketball’s first dynasty. Under Mr. Henry Iba, Oklahoma State (then known as Oklahoma A&M) became the first school to win consecutive NCAA championships in men’s hoops. OSU still ranks among the nation’s top 10 programs with six appearances in the Final Four and in the top 20 in all-time tournament wins.

Oklahoma State has appeared in College World Series 19 times to rank sixth among all NCAA schools. OSU has made 38 appearances in the NCAA baseball tournament to rank fourth all-time. Oklahoma State wrestling is the winningest program in the history of college athletics with 34 NCAA team championships.

STAR POWER OSU’s individual honors have included the college baseball player of the century in Pete Incaviglia, a college baseball player of the decade in Robin Ventura, one of the top 20 college basketball players of all-time in Bob Kurland (as selected by ESPN), a Heisman Trophy winner (Barry Sanders) and runner-up (Terry Miller) and numerous NCAA individual champions and Olympic gold medalists.

FORE The Cowboy golf team has won 54 conference championships and has appeared in 65 consecutive NCAA Tournaments. Oklahoma State has claimed 10 national championships in the sport.

WINNING WOMEN The Cowgirl golf program has won seven of the 16 Big 12 championships that have been contested and is a perennial national title contender.

THE 10 SPOT Since 2007, 12 different OSU teams have reached the top 10 of their sport.

FAST PITCH QB Brandon Weeden led OSU to its first Big 12 football title in 2011.

Oklahoma State has appeared in the Women’s College World Series seven times – tying for the most WCWS appearances by a Big 12 school and ranking seventh nationally.

NET GAIN The Cowgirl tennis program is a player on the national scene and at one point reeled off 11 consecutive conference championships.

Two of the newest sports on OSU’s campus are women’s soccer and equestrian. Equestrian has already claimed a national title and won the 2012 Big 12 title. The soccer team has advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each of the past six seasons and has won four-straight Big 12 titles. The Cowgirls came within a game of the Women’s College Cup (final four) in 2010 and 2011.

TRACKING SUCCESS OSU’s track and field history includes more than 80 All-Americans.

COWGIRL RECONFIGURATION The Cowgirl basketball team won the 2012 Women’s NIT and appeared in the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2008.
