Dear Colleagues:

There have been many other activities, meetings, and one-on-one interactions that have helped me become familiar with our college and its community of students, staff, faculty, and alumni. One of those special events was the opening of our new student dental clinics in the Postle Hall expansion. It was exciting to see the faculty and students working together to provide care for patients in our beautiful new facility, and I am so glad to have been here for that experience.

I have learned something new every day about our college and the people who make it what it is -- an institution that is highly respected as a leader in education, clinical care, research, and community service. As you read this Dental Journal, I believe you also will learn new and interesting things. We have titled this issue “Transitions in Leadership and Structure” because it spans the last months of Dr. Patrick Lloyd’s time as dean of the college, and it includes my first few weeks as dean, in addition to the move of some operations from the existing Postle Hall to the new facility.

In these pages, you will find student and faculty news; a staff spotlight story; and a special alumni story about Dr. Pranav Patel, who received a scholarship as a student in our college and is continuing to “pay it forward.”

Also included is a great article by an Ohio State undergraduate who recently discovered that his great-greatgreat uncle, Dr. Charles Bernard Cox, was the first Black graduate of our College of Dentistry. Along with these and other stories, you will find two “Q and A” articles -- one that highlights Dr. Lloyd’s experiences as dean, and one that touches on my areas of interest, previous leadership roles, and information about the things that drew me to this college and The Ohio State University.

I hope you enjoy reading this Dental Journal as much as I have. I am proud to share this publication with you because it showcases our constituent community of students, staff, faculty, and alumni who are doing remarkable things. Although I joined our College of Dentistry just a short time ago, I am already feeling like a member of the “Buckeye” family. The day after my arrival at Ohio State, the College of Optometry’s Dean Karla Zadnik arranged a gathering where I was warmly welcomed and had a chance to meet some of our dedicated and outstanding faculty and staff. That same week, a social event with students and faculty allowed us to enjoy talking with each other and to get acquainted. And then there was the White Coat Ceremony, which was held in-person at the Mershon Auditorium. That was a memorable and meaningful event, and I felt honored to welcome our new classes of dental and dental hygiene students as one of my first duties as dean.

Q&A with DEAN CARROLL ANN TROTMAN

felt strongly that it would provide me with the tools I needed to apply for grant funding. When I joined the faculty at the University of Michigan, I enrolled in the On-Job/On-Campus program for a Master’s in Clinical Research Design and Statistical Analysis. That experience gave me an excellent education and training that helped launch my research career.

Q: Your work on behalf of patients with cleft lip and palate through your Facial Animation Laboratory is intriguing. How did you become interested in those areas of research? And how has that work been most meaningful to you?

A: My interest in this area is a result of my orthodontic specialty training that included sub-

Q: To get started, please tell us a little bit about yourself -- where you’re from, your family, and any hobbies you enjoy in your free time?

A: I’m originally from Trinidad and Tobago, and that is where I had my early education. Since the school system was British oriented at that time, my decision to pursue a dental degree led me to the University of Dundee Dental School in Dundee, Scotland. It was quite a change from Trinidad, but my time there was a good experience in so many ways. Although I missed my family in Trinidad, I received a great dental education and the people were friendly and fun, and I made lots of friends there.

As for hobbies and other interests, I enjoy meeting new people and getting to know them better. I especially enjoy going to dinners and gatherings with friends and colleagues. When I’m not at work, it’s always a pleasure to read a good book, watch a movie, and have fun with my dog. Other than that, cooking is a new hobby that I began when the pandemic forced us all to spend so much time at home. I love all types of foods, especially Chinese and Indian.

Q: Your advanced education includes an MA in Oral Biology from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences; a Certificate in Orthodontics from Columbia University’s College of Dental Medicine; and an MS degree in Clinical Research Design and Statistical Analysis from the Horace Rackham School of Graduate Studies at the University of Michigan. Why did you choose orthodontics as your dental specialty, and what was it that interested you in the graduate program in clinical research design?

specializing in the treatment of patients with cleft lip and palate. These patients receive their care from a team of healthcare professionals, and I wanted to find objective ways to assess the outcomes of their treatment. By studying facial soft tissue movements during animations, we can assess the outcomes of soft tissue surgeries for cleft lip repair. More recently, we have used our research tools to study the recovery process for patients with permanent facial paralysis who undergo facial reanimation surgery. This work is tremendously rewarding for me because the knowledge we gain supports the surgeon’s efforts to provide life-changing treatment for these patients with challenging and complex needs.

Q: What interested you in the deanship at Ohio State’s College of Dentistry?

A: I was interested in the position because this is a great college that is doing great things at a great university. Ohio State is renowned for the excellence of its many programs, and this college is highly respected for providing an outstanding education for students and excellent clinical care for patients, while also conducting cutting-edge research and serving the community. It is also significant that in 2015 the college celebrated its 125th anniversary. That is a rich history for any educational institution, and it makes this a college that is highly valued.

With all that in mind, I enjoyed the interview process and was impressed by the people I met -search committee members, staff, and faculty -- all of whom were warm and welcoming, and clearly dedicated to their work. This is also an educational institution that is making significant advances in many important areas, and I wanted to be part of that forward momentum as our college continues to hold a place of national prominence.

Q: What excites you about the future of the College of Dentistry, and what are some areas in which you envision substantial progress during your tenure?

A: I chose orthodontics because I have always been fascinated by the structure and movements of the human face. Early in my career, I developed a special interest in caring for patients with craniofacial anomalies. This began during my time in the United Kingdom, where I spent three years training in oral surgery and treating patients with an array of oral healthcare needs. I knew then that I wanted to focus on the care of patients with craniofacial conditions, and I wanted to continue interacting with surgeons and other clinicians who provided care for these patients. However, I wanted something different from a surgical career path, so I became interested in orthodontics because it is integral to the care and treatment of these patients.

A: I am excited by this college’s unlimited potential. We have ambitious and talented students; outstanding faculty with world-class credentials; hard-working and dedicated staff members; and alumni who are known for their loyalty and generosity. In addition to those strengths, we have the Postle Hall expansion that is an ideal environment for educating students and caring for patients. It will be exciting to make advances in our curricula and in our clinical care to ensure that both are just as contemporary as our new facility.

Regarding the clinical research component of my education, I was drawn to that because I wanted to develop clinical research expertise that would support the clinical work I was doing, and I

collaboration; investing in outstanding faculty hires in strategic areas; advancing our diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives; and exploring efforts to ensure an affordable education for our students.

We will also focus on continuing to enhance clinic operational efficiencies; and completing the remaining areas in our new facility.

Q: What challenges do you anticipate facing?

A: Some of the challenges we will address are related to COVID-19. We must navigate our way through the impact the pandemic has had, and continues to have, on our college. Although it is an issue that continues to evolve, we have all learned a great deal about how to continue to meet our obligations and maintain our forward momentum during this once-in-a-century pandemic. Other challenges include the completion of the Postle Hall expansion -- namely, the radiology clinic and simulation laboratory. Those are vital components of our new facility, and we will need to engage our constituents to get the support we will need. At the same time, we must work to ensure that our college continues to be a place that is attractive and welcoming to diverse students, staff, and faculty. This is an important objective that is a college-wide effort and initiative.

The Postle Hall expansion is already providing improved clinical experiences for our students and patients. But we have more to do. We still need to complete our radiology clinic and our pre-clinical simulation and technology labs.

Q: Your career has included serving as a teacher, researcher, and senior administrator. What are the accomplishments you’re most proud of as they relate to each of those roles?

A: As an academic, being promoted to the rank of full professor with tenure -- it was a personal and professional accomplishment to rise through the academic ranks. As my career has progressed and as I have held various leadership positions, I have been proud to serve in every educational institution that I have been a part of, and being chosen for the deanship of this College of Dentistry is my proudest moment yet.

As a teacher, I am proud that I have been able to help educate residents who provide care for patients with different healthcare needs -- teaching and working with them to understand treatment options, and the ways they will work with surgeons and other healthcare professionals who are involved in their patients’ care has been very rewarding. Regarding my research, it has been gratifying throughout my career to have had consistent funding from the National Institutes of Health, and to have felt that my efforts have had a positive impact on understanding treatment outcomes in patients with dentofacial problems.

Q: And finally, what are some highlights of your Ohio experience so far?

A: Although I have only been in Ohio for a short time, I continue to be impressed by the warm welcome I have received and the generosity of the people who have helped me in so many ways.

That has been very special and it is something I am grateful for. As for Columbus, I like living here and I feel comfortable as a new member of the local community. I am also enjoying the process of getting to know people in our college – students, staff, and faculty. And I look forward to meeting our alumni, who are the members of our extended Buckeye family. In the coming weeks, I anticipate having many more “scarlet and gray” experiences on campus, in addition to traveling some throughout the state. I am excited about exploring Ohio -- my new home!

NEW STUDENT DENTAL CLINICS OPEN IN POSTLE HALL EXPANSION

On August 24, the College of Dentistry’s new student dental clinics officially opened to patients in the Postle Hall expansion.

After months of planning and training, students, staff, and faculty were excited as they greeted patients on opening day.

Commenting on the successful opening, Dr. Fonda Robinson, associate dean for Clinic Administration and Patient Care, said, “The new clinics have been positively received by our patients and our students, staff, and faculty. This transition should support an array of benefits by enhancing the treatment-related experiences we provide for patients and improving our students’ learning experiences. It will also set the stage for the continued expansion of our dental technologies.”

“It’s been great being able to provide dental services to patients in our stunning dental clinics,” senior dental hygiene student Katie Fisher said. “Using up-to-date technology and new equipment makes our job as providers more effective and efficient. My patients have made comments on how sharp looking and welcoming the new clinics are.”

Dean Carroll Ann Trotman attended the clinics’ opening, and she voiced her appreciation for the successful transition. “It is always quite an undertaking when a clinical operation is moved from one location to another, but this transition from the existing Postle Hall to the new facility has been conducted seamlessly.” She added, “Our new student clinics are a point of pride, and they will bolster our efforts to serve as a statewide resource for patients, while we continue to address Ohioans’ evolving oral healthcare needs.”

Organized into eight small-group practices, the new dental clinics are designed to create an educational experience for dental and dental hygiene students using an integrated healthcare delivery model.

“The new student dental clinics have cultivated an environment where my classmates and I can better apply the clinical skills we’ve been taught over the past two years, while continuing to learn and grow from our faculty, mentors, and peers,” third-year dental student Emma Bockrath said. “Not only has the new clinic made our transition from our pre-clinical courses easier and more exciting, but it has also made our patients’ experiences more comfortable by setting them up to receive optimal dental care.”

What was it that made you decide to come to Ohio State?

I was excited to assume the deanship at Ohio State’s College of Dentistry because I believed the college, the university, and the city of Columbus offered everything a dental school needed to flourish and be successful. I was impressed by the college’s well-respected faculty, its outstanding student body and hard-working staff members, as well as its active and supportive alumni society. I was also pleased that the college had a dental hygiene program, since most dental schools do not. And the number and quality of the advanced education programs meant the college had tremendous clinical and research capabilities.

Another important reason for coming to Ohio State was the college’s strong working relationship with the Ohio Dental Association and the state dental board. And the location of the university’s main campus in Columbus, the state’s capital, was important because this afforded easy access to legislators and other activities that take place in every state’s capital city.

Making Ohio State even more attractive was the fact that it has seven health science colleges located on one campus. There is only one other university in the country that can claim this. I felt that inter-professional education and practice experiences at Ohio State would be some of the best among all the dental schools in the country.

The senior leaders on campus also recognized that Postle Hall was long overdue for an upgrade. From what I had seen at other dental schools that built new facilities, I was confident that a new College of Dentistry building would serve as an incentive in hiring outstanding faculty, recruiting the best students, and employing dedicated staff.

And, of course, The Ohio State University had a president at that time who inspired everyone to “do something great.” In a word, Ohio State had it all!

Were there any significant surprises along the way?

I enjoy surprises because they make each day more invigorating than the last. One of the first of those occasions was when I realized just how many alumni Ohio State has. It happened shortly after I became dean and was traveling to San Diego. I was carrying a black satchel with a large OSU logo on it. When I arrived at the airport, someone called out, “O-H!” To which I responded, “I-O!” That happened several more times throughout the trip. I remember thinking that Ohio State’s alumni are everywhere!

I was also surprised to discover how many ways the College of Dentistry partners with educators, clinicians, and researchers at the Wexner Medical Center. We had medical school faculty serving as course directors for our students. And our faculty provided care for the medical center’s patients in a variety of settings. Several of the College of Medicine’s faculty members were also collaborating with our faculty on clinical and basic science research grants. The scope and scale of these activities was much more than I had expected, and it was more than I had seen at any other dental institution.

“My time as dean of this college has been the most rewarding job I have had, and for this I will always be grateful. How wonderful it is to have such feelings about a position I held for ten years!”

The level of interest our alumni have in the college’s students and faculty was another surprise. Throughout my time as dean, they have asked questions about our applicant pool for dental school; how many had applied; what their average GPAs and DAT scores were; and which states they came from. Our alums have also inquired regularly about the challenges related to recruiting faculty. And they have often shared with me the names of faculty members who helped them in dental school, and they expressed their gratitude for that support.

What are the achievements you are most proud of from your time as dean of Ohio State’s College of Dentistry?

Of the many things we accomplished while I served as dean, none was more important to me than the success we had in recruiting 75 outstanding faculty. With new dental schools starting up across the country, and the substantial increase in the class sizes of many other schools, the competition for faculty has never been this intense.

Another point of pride is the new strategic plan we completed in 2019. Although I have been involved in strategic plans at other dental schools, our college had the most remarkable engagement in the process with more than 500 people involved in some way. That college-wide initiative produced a document with six goals, 23 objectives, and more than 100 initiatives to chart our path for the next five years.

Launching our Commitment to Access Resources and Education (CARE) program in 2018 was also a particularly proud moment. The program was developed to recruit and support dental students from federally designated dental workforce shortage areas in Ohio. Our college is one of only a few dental schools in the country that supports such a program.

Assembling the college’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Workgroup, and creating a college-wide demographic survey to assess the diversity of our current students, staff, and faculty were both significant accomplishments for our college community. The survey results provided information that will benefit the college as it plans for future initiatives. This effort also demonstrated a thoughtful approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and our consideration of the best ways to support the college community.

The Postle Hall expansion project was also a source of great pride for our entire college. With the help of university government relations staff, senior administrators on campus, state legislators, loyal alumni and friends of the college, as well as our own college community, we built a new facility to provide enhanced patient care; contemporary work environments for staff and faculty; and spaces for our community to gather. The Postle Hall expansion will serve the college well for decades to come, and it will set the design and construction standards for future additions.

I would be remiss if I did not also include the fact that the College of Dentistry was the only college at Ohio State that never fully closed during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is something we all can be proud of because it was an accomplishment that involved our students, staff, and faculty -- and it required courage and dedication that went well “above and beyond.” Thanks to the efforts of our clinic administration staff, and our Endodontic, General Practice, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery faculty, residents, and staff, we continued providing care for patients in need from the beginning to the end of the initial COVID-19 outbreak. college news 10

Are there any favorite memories you’d like to share?

I will always remember President Gee showing up and contributing to college-sponsored functions, often as an impromptu visit. He did so much to energize every occasion as he talked and shook hands with anyone and everyone who wanted to meet him. He was an active supporter of our college, and I can’t thank him enough for all he did for our students, staff, and faculty -- and for me as dean.

Having our college serve as the national kick-off site for the American Dental Association’s (ADA) Give Kids A Smile Day in 2018 was certainly a day I will always remember. There were ADA officials, including our own alumnus Dr. Joe Crowley, who was the ADA president at that time, and representatives from other organizations that sponsored the event who celebrated with us. Together, we recognized the hard work of oral health care practitioners across the country, including our own students, residents, and faculty who provide dental care for children in need.

It was also a great honor to interview the late John and Annie Glenn about her father, Dr. Homer Castor, who was a graduate of our college and a practicing dentist in New Concord, Ohio. The Glenns were an amazing couple and they shared vivid stories about her father. That interview yielded a wonderful article that we publicized widely.

Attending the inaugural college football national championship playoff in 2015 was another extra special experience.

Everything about the game was remarkable -- from the venue where the teams played, to the number of people who attended, and it all culminated in Ohio State’s decisive win!

The events surrounding the 125th anniversary of our college are great memories as well. It was a year-long series of celebrations that included recognition by the State of Ohio’s House and Senate in an official proclamation that commemorated our anniversary.

What are you looking forward to doing as you plan your “next?”

Right now, I am excited about reconnecting with many things that initially interested me in dental education – specifically, helping students and residents plan and provide dental care for older adults. This is an area of dentistry that has always intrigued me from an intellectual and clinical perspective, and it was the reason why I became a prosthodontist. With the increasing number of senior patients who are seeking dental care, this is the ideal time for me to return to this lifelong interest.

There are several projects that I put on hold when I began my role as dean. They also relate to providing dental care for the elderly, and some are more clinically oriented than others. I believe the publications resulting from those projects will be worthwhile additions to the dental literature, and they will expand the knowledge base about dental care for aging patients.

DR. LISA A. LANG HONORED AS THE FIRST DR. & MRS. JULIAN B. WOELFEL ENDOWED CHAIR On July 26, Lisa A. Lang, DDS, MS, MBA, was formally recognized as the College of Dentistry’s first Dr. & Mrs. Julian B. Woelfel Endowed Chair in the Division of Restorative and Prosthetic Dentistry. An intimate gathering of family members and colleagues joined her at Ohio State’s Faculty Club for a celebratory reception.

Established with an estate gift from faculty emeritus Julian B. Woelfel, ’48 DDS, and his wife, Marcile B. Woelfel, on November 19, 2020, the endowment represents one of the highest honors the college can bestow on a faculty member. The funds may be used to retain and recruit an outstanding faculty member, support that faculty member’s prosthodontic research, and/or support residents involved in the chair holder’s research.

Dr. Julian Woelfel spent more than four decades at the College of Dentistry as a student and faculty member. In 1959, he began teaching dental anatomy courses. His interest and expertise in the subject led him to write a foundational textbook, “Woelfel’s Dental Anatomy,” which is now in its ninth edition. Mrs. Marcile Woelfel was devoted to service and was the first recipient of the Volunteer Service Award from The Ohio State University International Education Office. In her later years, she collaborated with her husband and historian William A. Paquette, PhD, on a book about Dr. Woelfel’s family home. That publication was titled “The Pink House: The Legendary Residence of Edwin Bradford Hall and His Succeeding Generations in Wellsville, New York.”

“The Woelfels clearly had a love for The Ohio State University and were very generous in establishing this endowment,” Dr. Lang said. “I want to publicly acknowledge their generosity, and thank them for this honor.

I am grateful and humbled to receive this distinction. I will wear the badge of this endowment with pride.”

In whatever capacity I can contribute, I will continue to support organized dentistry as a member of the ADA, ODA, and the Columbus Dental Society. Dental organizations have been helpful throughout my career, and I plan to maintain my involvement and serve for the benefit of the public and our profession.

Having been a dean for more than 17 years, I look forward to gaining a new perspective on what it means to be a faculty member and an active participant in organized dentistry. I believe these will be very different experiences for me, and for those whom I have had the pleasure of teaching and working with in our College of Dentistry.

My time as dean of this college has been the most rewarding job I have had, and for this I will always be grateful. How wonderful it is to have such feelings about a position I held for ten years!

FORMER SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT DR. PRANAV PATEL GIVES BACK TO HELP HIS COMMUNITY PROSPER

When Pranav Patel, DDS ’95, MS, enrolled at The Ohio State University as an undergraduate, he entered college having earned a four-year academic scholarship to help defray the costs of his education. The scholarship award, in addition to part-time jobs and student loans, would make it possible for him to start his journey toward becoming an orthodontist.

When Dr. Patel earned his undergraduate degree in just two years instead of four, the scholarship followed him for the first two years of his enrollment in the College of Dentistry. But even with scholarship support, the costs of completing his DDS at Ohio State and MS in orthodontics at West Virginia University saddled Dr. Patel with $200,000 in student loan debt. He carried the burden of this debt as he opened the doors to Pasha Orthodontics, his first orthodontic practice that serves the Chicago suburbs of Naperville, Aurora and Plainfield, Illinois.

Dr. Patel has not forgotten that journey — and knows it is even more challenging for students today. In 2011, he created the Patel Dental Scholarship to help Ohio State dental students pursue their dreams, just as his scholarship helped him pursue his own dream of becoming an orthodontist.

“Graduates have huge debts from increased costs of schooling and then shrinking salaries on the other end,” said Dr. Patel, who notes that the average orthodontist now graduates with over $500,000 in student loan debt. “I know that’s a stress. I felt fortunate to have received scholarship money and know that someone’s gift set that in motion. I’m happy to pay that forward.”

In addition to creating a student scholarship, Dr. Patel has contributed to the Building on Strong Foundations campaign in support of the Postle Hall expansion. He also recently endowed a fund that can be spent at the dean’s discretion for priority needs and opportunities. Having served as class president during all four years of the DDS program, Dr. Patel developed relationships with then-Dean Henry Fields and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Dennis McTigue. Those relationships inspired his gift to provide college leadership with flexible funding. He created a similar fund at West Virginia University’s orthodontic program, as well.

Providing this support is important, said Dr. Patel, because he’s seen well-respected schools of dentistry close in the Chicago area as for-profit dental schools proliferate. He wants to ensure his colleges remain competitive amid a difficult climate. “If you want your alma mater to survive, you have to give back,” he said.

Dr. Patel and his wife, Shefali Shah, a clinical psychologist, have a daughter, Raya, who is a junior studying biology and business at Ohio State. Their daughter Ayana is a junior in high school who enjoys dancing and playing golf for her school. The family displays their Buckeye spirit by coming to football games and maintaining close ties with the college.

While he humbly points out that his gifts “aren’t huge” at this point in his life, he firmly believes that alumni should give back at all stages of their careers. “A lot of people wait until they die to give, but I’ve always felt that charity should be part of your living existence,” said Dr. Patel. “If you want to do something, start giving early.”

By Phillip T. Chapman Dr. Charles Bernard Cox

As an undergraduate in Ohio State’s pharmacology program, Phillip “Ty” Chapman, ’21 BS, came across the name of a relative, Charles Bernard Cox, 1903 DDS, on the College of Dentistry’s web page. That discovery led Ty on a quest to learn more about his family’s history and to the realization that his greatgreat-great uncle started a legacy of service that affected his life in ways he was only just discovering.

The fourth of eight children, Charles Bernard Cox was born in the foothills of Chillicothe, Ohio, to Fleming and Nannie Cox on November 6, 1879. The Cox family was well established in Chillicothe by the late 1800’s, and helped establish the Wendell Phillips Club (WPC) in 1891. Named after the famous orator and abolitionist Wendell Phillips, the club functioned as a safe space for the Black youths of Chillicothe to gather socially and celebrate the literary arts. It was at the WPC that Bernard honed his leadership skills. He held various offices and leadership roles during his high school years, including earning the title of “Toast Master” during the club’s 9th anniversary celebration, where he delivered a memorable speech titled “The Life of Wendell Phillips.”

After graduating from high school in 1897, Bernard prepared for a career in dentistry by studying under Dr. Charles Mills. In the summer of 1900, Bernard traveled to Columbus and enrolled into Ohio Medical University’s (OMU) dental school (which would one day become Ohio State’s College of Dentistry), becoming the school’s first Black student and, three years later, the school’s first Black graduate. After graduation, Bernard joined his older brother, Lyman, as a member of the small population of Black licensed healthcare professionals practicing in the early 20th century. Lyman worked as a druggist in Chillicothe and Columbus, and was reported to be the first Black man to pass Ohio’s state pharmaceutical examination in 1896. Three years after Bernard’s graduation, his older brother, Ernest, graduated in the OMU College of Medicine’s Class of 1906.

By 1910, Dr. Cox had purchased a home on Hamilton Avenue in Columbus and a dental office nearby at 826 E. Long Street, serving as a dentist for Black and immigrant patients. In the summer of 1914, he married Alice Davis. Two years later, Alice gave birth to their daughter, Lois Ann. Soon after, Dr. Cox enlisted as a first lieutenant in Company F of the 372nd infantry 93rd Provisional District during World War I in 1918. In February of 1919, after he sojourned at Camp Upton, 1st Lt. Cox returned home. Not long after, the Cox family was expecting their second daughter, named Alice, after her mother.

Sadly, Bernard and Alice eventually divorced. Despite the changes in his home life, one thing remained constant: Dr. Cox continued to serve his community out of his E. Long Street office for over thirty years. He provided important and needed dental services to an ethnically diverse clientele in a time when discrimination outside and within the healthcare system was rampant.

Bernard passed away on July 5, 1945, but his legacy remains an important part of Columbus’ Black medical history. Ostensibly, the precedent established after being the first to achieve something noteworthy is one’s greatest contribution to society. However, Dr. Cox’s legacy is felt today through the lives and actions of the patients he served and, furthermore, the lives and actions of the family he helped build.

2021 CONVOCATION On Friday, May 7, 2021, the College of Dentistry held its first inperson event on campus in more than a year when it hosted a hybrid Convocation Program. Graduates and their immediate families gathered at Mershon Auditorium while extended family, friends, and College of Dentistry students, staff and faculty watched the ceremony virtually via livestream.

Then-Dean Patrick Lloyd presided over the ceremony and was joined on stage by special guests David Kimberly, DDS, MD, President, Ohio Dental Association; Shannon Sweeney, RDH, President, Ohio Dental Hygienists’ Association; and Tara Haid, ’01 DDS, President, Ohio State Dental Alumni Society.

The Convocation looked a bit different than in previous years, but graduates were happy to be able to take part in a ceremony that is an important tradition at the College of Dentistry. “Tradition,” in fact, was a prominent theme in then-Dean Patrick Lloyd’s remarks. He thanked graduates for their enthusiastic involvement in college traditions over the years such as in the OHIO Project, Give Kids A Smile, Research Day, and the Homecoming float competition. “Having such traditions helps to connect one year’s class to the next,” Dr. Lloyd said. “They also provide opportunities for all of us to work together—students, staff, and faculty. Thank you for recognizing the importance of these things, as well as the ways our future graduates will benefit from your efforts and foresight.”

Homa Amini, ’93 DDS, ’96 MS, ’97 MPH, Receives National Leadership Award

Paul Casamassimo, DDS, MS, and Henry Fields, DDS, MS, MSD, Receive Callahan Memorial Award

Dr. Homa Amini, a professor-clinical in the Division of Pediatric Dentistry, has received the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) 2021 Leadership Institute Alumni Association Award to Honor Jack Bresch.

The award is presented annually to an ADEA member “who reflects the attitudes, values and behaviors in advocacy of dental care and dental education.” Dr. Amini joined Ohio State’s faculty in 1993 and, in addition to her role at the College of Dentistry, serves as a member of the Section of Pediatric Dentistry at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

Dr. Paul Casamassimo and Dr. Henry Fields have been named as the 2021 Ohio Dental Association (ODA) Callahan Memorial Award recipients. Drs. Casamassimo and Fields were selected for their leadership in organized dentistry and academics.

Dr. Casamassimo is a professor emeritus in the Division of Pediatric Dentistry and is a member of the Section of Dentistry at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

He also serves as a policy consultant with the State of Ohio Department of Medicaid and as the chief policy officer of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry in Chicago.

Paul Casamassimo, DDS, MS Dr. Casamassimo’s career has focused mainly on education and hospital care, oftentimes on more complicated cases such as children with special needs or severe illnesses who have limited access to care. His research interests include oral health of children and adults with special health care needs, health services research, and oral health disparity.

Lisa Lang, DDS, MS, MBA, Elected President of the Academy of Prosthodontics

Dr. Casamassimo has been dedicated to organized dentistry throughout his career. He has served on councils and committees with the Columbus Dental Society, Ohio Dental Association and American Dental Association. He served as president of the Columbus Dental Society in 2008 and of the Ohio Dental Association in 2014. Dr. Casamassimo is also actively involved with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and served as president from 2000-2001.

Dr. Lisa Lang, a professor and the Dr. and Mrs. Julian B. Woelfel Endowed Chair in the Division of Restorative and Prosthetic Dentistry, has been elected to serve as the president of the Academy of Prosthodontics.

Founded in 1918, the Academy of Prosthodontics is the oldest prosthodontic specialty organization. The organization is committed to supporting education, research, and the clinical practice of prosthodontics.

The path to the presidency for Dr. Lang began when she was the first female elected to the position of secretary-treasurer in 2015. After three years in that position, she rose to the position of vice president/program chair until ultimately being installed as president on May 22, 2021. The president, in concert with the secretary-treasurer, manages the operations of the organization. She presides over the Academy, the Executive Council and its meetings.

Dr. Lang joined Ohio State’s faculty in 2016 and has served as the chair of the Division of Restorative and Prosthetic Dentistry since the beginning of her tenure.

“It is an honor for me to have been installed as the 98th president of such a distinguished organization as the Academy of Prosthodontics, which has played a vital role in the history of our specialty,” Dr. Lang said. “To be among Ohio State alumni Drs. Carl O. Boucher, Judson C. Hickey, and George Zarb, who were past presidents of the academy, is truly a privilege.”

Henry Fields, DDS, MS, MSD

Dr. Fields is a professor emeritus in the Division of Orthodontics. He served as dean of The Ohio State University College of Dentistry from 1991-2001. During his tenure as dean, the college was able to expand the endowment of the college, implement a comprehensive care model in the student dental clinics, proliferate the faculty practice and improve its research profile. After completing his service as dean, Dr. Fields became the chair of the Division of Orthodontics for 14 years.

Dr. Fields’ research interests have included children’s behavior in a dental setting and how to improve it, craniofacial anomalies, vertical facial development and vertical occlusal function, indices of malocclusion and the epidemiology of malocclusion, diagnosis of malocclusion and treatment outcomes, informed consent, and smile esthetics.

Dr. Fields has served in several leadership roles in organized dentistry, including councils and committees with the Columbus Dental Society, the Ohio Dental Association and the American Dental Association. He served as president of the Columbus Dental Society in 2002 and the Ohio Dental Association in 2007.

The Callahan Memorial Award Commission was established by the ODA in 1920 to honor the work of John Ross Callahan, one of Ohio’s noted dental researchers and a leader in organized dentistry. The award was presented on October 1 at the Callahan Celebration of Excellence, held in conjunction with the 155th ODA Annual Session.

RESEARCH DAY 2021 Earlier this year, College of Dentistry dental and dental hygiene students, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and residents showcased their research virtually during Research Day 2021. The day began with a lecture on “Orofacial Cleft Studies around the World” by distinguished lecturer Mary L. Marazita, PhD, a professor and vice chair of the Department of Oral Biology, and the associate dean of research at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. Researchers presented virtual oral and poster presentations, and top presenters were recognized during a virtual awards presentation at the conclusion of the event.

USING CANDY TO SNIFF OUT PROBABLE CASES OF COVID-19 Susan Travers, PhD, Part of Research Team Developing Method to Screen for Taste and Smell Loss Scientists have proposed that using a cheap and simple product – hard candy – to screen for the loss of taste and smell in populations at risk for COVID-19 exposure may help detect probable positive cases in otherwise asymptomatic people.

The Ohio State University research team received $305,000 in National Institutes of Health funding in a competitive bid to develop easy-to-deploy strategies that can identify people who are potentially infected with SARS-CoV-2.

If this method is adopted as a screening strategy, it would complement existing tools for this purpose: a scratch-and-sniff card for smell and/or a onetime evaluation of the bitter medication quinine for taste, both of which are more expensive than candy (less than 5 cents for a piece of candy versus more than 50 cents per scratch-and-sniff card).

The first phase of the Ohio State project has involved validating the use of candy against those established methods. Preliminary assessments have been promising, though the pace of the work has decreased as the team continues to seek eligible participants.

While symptoms like fever, chills, a cough and body aches vary widely among COVID-19 patients, an estimated 86% of people who test positive report a loss of smell, “which makes it a much better predictor, especially if it’s sudden loss,” said project co-leader Christopher Simons, PhD, associate professor of food science and technology at Ohio State.

Long-term tracking occurs in the project’s second phase, for which recruitment is just beginning. The team plans to follow about 2,800 people for 90 days. Ohio State students, staff, and faculty are a key recruitment target for the study.

Eight flavors of hard candies that are uniform in color have been manufactured for the study. Asking people to identify flavors by tasting the candies allows for sophisticated assessment of the function of two sensory systems – taste and smell – by which we can tell what we’re eating, Simons said.

Participants are asked to consume a piece of hard candy once per day and log into a survey app developed by Dr. Zhao to report what they smell and taste – not only by identifying the flavor, but also rating its intensity. If they report a sudden drop in either sense, they receive a message that they should quarantine and get a COVID-19 test.

Plus, the sweet treat is hard to resist as a scientific screening tool.

Simons’ lab in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences focuses on understanding the neural and physiological underpinnings of how we perceive food. The research team also includes taste biologist Susan Travers, PhD, professor of the Division of Biosciences in the College of Dentistry, and Kai Zhao, PhD, associate professor of Otolaryngology in the College of Medicine, who specializes in olfaction – the sense of smell.

The new funding is a competitive revision to one of Dr. Travers’ existing NIH grants. “After working on the basic neural circuitry for taste in animal models for many years, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to team up with my colleagues, Drs. Simons and Zhao, experts in human taste and smell, to help develop a test useful for the Covid-19 crisis,” Dr. Travers said. “In fact, a fast, reliable, and agreeable tool like the ‘candy test’ has potential to be applied to other clinical conditions that affect the chemical senses, such as Alzheimer’s disease.”

“With our assessment, you unwrap the candy, and pop it into your mouth to identify the candy’s flavor and rate how strong it is, which is the smell component. You also assess sweetness and sourness, which is the taste component. It allows us to tackle three different aspects of flavor perception,” Dr. Simons said.

Though the researchers have hypothesized that both the smell and taste pathways are affected by SARS-CoV-2, their first order of business is providing what the NIH is looking for: “a fairly simple, inexpensive and deployable technology to support public health,” Dr. Simons said.

College of Dentistry Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Work Group Receives Unprecedented Response to Diversity Survey

In early April, the College of Dentistry concluded its first-ever Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) survey. More than 1,000 students, residents, staff, and faculty were invited to anonymously provide data that will be utilized to enhance the college’s efforts to promote diversity and create an inclusive working environment.

Survey questions were largely related to demographics, including respondents’ age, gender, ethnic group, and marital status. Additional questions asked about military service, native language, birth country, whether parents or grandparents went to college, and whether or not respondents have any dependents. The college community’s participation rate was extraordinary with 98% of faculty, 74% of staff, 77% of dental hygiene students, 84% of dental students, and 93% of residents and graduate students completing the survey.

“The unprecedented response to this survey tells us that diversity is something our entire community is focused on and concerned about during this time of heightened focus on equity in healthcare and education,” then-Dean Patrick Lloyd said. “We now have a more accurate assessment of our college’s rich diversity, and we are better prepared to evaluate the impact of our future efforts to make our college a most welcoming and supportive place to work and learn.”

The survey was designed after months of careful research and discussion by the College of Dentistry’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Workgroup that is comprised of students, staff, and faculty. The workgroup consulted with Ohio State’s Office of Institutional Research and Planning, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Office of Institutional Equity, and the Office of University Compliance and Integrity.

College Completes Historic AND SUCCESSFUL

Accreditation Visit

The College of Dentistry was weeks away from its seven-year accreditation site visit in 2020 when the pandemic caused the sudden and unexpected stop to business as usual. This year, the rescheduled accreditation visit took place during the first week of April with seven of the college’s nine advanced education programs undergoing review, in addition to the pre-doctoral and dental hygiene programs. The visit served as another historic first for the college as it was conducted “virtually” by five staff members from the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), along with 16 site visitors from 14 institutions.

The accreditation visit was a success, with only a small number of suggestions shared, representing valuable insights for enhancing the college’s programs. The site visitors had even fewer recommendations.

And the pre-doctoral program, the most complex of all the programs reviewed, received no recommendations from the site visitors who evaluated the 64 standards associated with the program.

Discussions about how to address the site visitors’ recommendations began immediately after their virtual visit. But first, then-Dean Patrick Lloyd took time via a virtual town hall to thank the students, staff, residents, and faculty members who engaged in and supported the initiative.

“During this year that has presented so many challenges that had to be met and overcome, our college community has demonstrated a level of dedication and commitment that made it possible for us to continue meeting our most vital goals of educating students, conducting research, providing patient care -- and preparing for a comprehensive accreditation review,” he said. “We can all be proud of these collective efforts and accomplishments.”

Through the survey, the DEI workgroup discovered that the college community has a larger number of countries represented among its population than was previously believed. Students and employees originate from 43 different countries. In addition, the workgroup learned there are 45 college members who are fluent in at least three languages, and more than 200 are fluent in at least two languages, including Arabic, French, Hindi, Korean, Spanish, Serbian, and Russian. The workgroup also found that the age distribution among faculty is fairly evenly spread.

“The survey represents a first step in assessing the College of Dentistry’s collective diversity,” said Shareef Dabdoub, ‘11 PhD, the co-chair of a DEI subgroup. “By cultivating that diversity, we can work to ensure that our college represents the cultural, racial, and ethnic groups that make up the communities in which we live, work, and serve.”

IN MEMORIAM

Alfred C. Long, ’48 DDS Dr. Alfred “Curt” Long, Jr., a professor emeritus/assistant dean emeritus, passed away on Thursday, March 4, 2021, in Dublin, Ohio.

Dr. Long earned his bachelor’s degree from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA. He graduated from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry in 1948. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Dr. Long was honorably discharged from the military before reenlisting in 1952 to serve in the Korean War. Dr. Long was in private practice for several years in Pasadena, California, and Columbus, Ohio, before joining the College of Dentistry faculty as an associate professor. He eventually became a full professor and chair of Fixed Partial Prosthodontics. He was appointed to the position of Assistant Dean for Clinics in 1978, serving in that role until his retirement in 1985.

“Dr. Long was the department chairman during my predoctoral days at the College of Dentistry,” Mark Gordon ‘74 DDS, remembered. “My classmates and I liked and respected him for his knowledge and his teaching abilities. His lectures were informative while at the same time often entertaining.”

William J. Meyers, DMD, MS, MEd Dr. William J. Meyers, a professor emeritus, passed away on Saturday, March 6, 2021.

Dr. Meyers received a BS and an MS degree in biological sciences from Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, after which he earned a DMD degree at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry in Louisville, Kentucky. He then completed an endodontic residency at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Miami, Florida, and later earned a Master of Education degree at the University of Miami.

Dr. Meyers joined the College of Dentistry in 1976 as a professor and chair of what was then the Section of Endodontics, serving in that role until 1995. From 1997 until 2002, he was the director of the Section of Endodontics/Diagnostic Services. As a widely respected faculty member and administrator, Dr. Meyers received the Student Government Association’s Outstanding Faculty Award numerous times during his tenure in the college. In 2003, he was honored as the namesake of the William J. Meyers Endowed Chair in Endodontics.

Prior to his tenure at The Ohio State University, Dr. Meyers served in various roles at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry, including professor, assistant dean for clinical affairs, associate dean for clinical health, and acting dean of the college.

Dr. Meyers was a leader in organized dentistry, serving as past president of the Columbus Dental Society and the Ohio Association of Endodontists. In 2005, he was recognized with the prestigious I.B. Bender Lifetime Educator Award from the American Association of Endodontists.

“Dr. Meyers was the department chairman when I first came to the College of Dentistry,” John Nusstein, DDS, MS, said. “His impact on endodontics and the lives of the students, residents, faculty and staff he worked with cannot be measured. He made a significant impact on the division and he will be greatly missed.”

STAFF SPOTLIGHT

Dear Fellow Alumni, It is a great feeling to get back to what we are used to doing again… having fun! The pandemic paused many activities we enjoyed in life: gatherings, sports, vacations, alumni events, and in-person training/ continuing education. Yet here we are—finally doing all these things again!

Getting to Know

Jessica Almikhi, MS An employee at the College of Dentistry for close to five years, Jessica Almikhi is an important member of the two-person team in the college’s Office of Graduate Studies. As program coordinator, she serves as a vital link between the residents and graduates and their respective programs.

Q) What do you like best about your job?

A) Our office is unique because of its small size and the numerous other offices we work with to assist our incredibly bright and hardworking residents. I feel fortunate to work with Dr. John Walters, our Associate Dean for Advanced and Graduate Education, and can learn from his vast experience. Every day is different, and I enjoy the spontaneity of my work.

Q) What do you like best about the College of Dentistry?

A) I identify with the larger mission to care for our community and enjoy sharing the accomplishments of the college. This is truly an exciting time to be working in the College of Dentistry and I am thrilled to be a part of it. In general, I have so much pride in working at Ohio State and feel part of a larger “team.”

Q) Are you an Ohio State alum?

A) I didn’t attend Ohio State as an undergraduate student, although I recently started a doctoral program at Ohio State. I am excited at the prospect of having an OSU degree.

Although every one of us had our own trials and tribulations along the way, we should recognize the tireless efforts (and at times thankless efforts) by our dean, professors and staff at our College of Dentistry. Our amazing professors took on split schedules and had to learn to teach in different ways that required a lot more time than usual. Our professors and staff went over and beyond to prepare our students and they deserve the biggest “Thank you!” In addition, Dean Patrick Lloyd will personally be remembered as a special leader, mentor, and friend now that he has wrapped up his term as our dean. Through his vigilance and perseverance, he was able to accomplish what many of us have been wanting since we were students… a NEW dental school! The amount of time and attention to detail over this project required many hours outside the usual leadership skills necessary to run the dental and dental hygiene program, and the list is too long to mention in this letter. In addition, if that were not challenging enough, he had to navigate a worldwide pandemic. Now, he had to forge his own path to keep the students educated and trained to graduate on-time, and with confidence. This has never been done before and learning about the SARS-CoV2 was a constantly moving target. There were only so many qualified experts you could look to for advice, since even the experts were learning as the research unfolded. All I can say is, Dean Patrick Lloyd did the absolute best he could in the environment we were in, with the knowledge that was available. And what an outstanding job he did! We should all feel proud that he was the dean and leader of our OSU College of Dentistry during this time. For that, I say, “Thank you, Dean Patrick Lloyd!” You have left big shoes to fill and we have thoroughly enjoyed having you as our leader. We wish you great luck on your next adventure in life!

With everything going back to business as usual, I look forward to hosting alumni events again. Keep an eye out for emails regarding your alumni events. Until then, I wish each and every single one of you happiness and good health!

Q) What do you like to do outside of work?

A) I love to spend time with my husband and our two dogs, read, entertain family and friends, volunteer, garden, and experience everything Columbus has to offer, like state parks, restaurants, and festivals.

F A C U LT Y P R O M O T I O N S Brian Foster, MS, PhD

Promoted to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure, Division of Biosciences Dr. Foster earned a Master of Science degree in microbiology from Central Michigan University, and a PhD in oral biology from the University of Washington. Prior to joining Ohio State’s faculty, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at the National Institutes of Health - National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Disease, where he conducted research on the cellular and molecular biology of cementum and the development of the periodontium.

As a faculty member in the Division of Biosciences, Dr. Foster contributes to the teaching, service, and administrative missions of the division, while also continuing his research on the molecular mechanisms that drive tooth root formation, developing novel approaches for regenerating tissues and restoring dental functions, and investigating the broader issues of skeletal development, disease, and wound healing. Since he joined the college in 2015, his work has been consistently funded by substantial grants from the National Institutes for Health - National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research, and his research has appeared in such publications as the Journal of Dental Research; the Journal of Proteomics; Bone; and the Journal of Periodontology.

Throughout his career, Dr. Foster’s achievements have been recognized with numerous awards, including the John Haddad Young Investigator Award of the Association for Bone and Mineral Research, and the International Association for Dental Research Distinguished Scientist Young Investigator Award. The College of Dentistry has honored his many research achievements with the presentation of three consecutive “Paper of the Year” awards, and the Stazen Junior Award for Research Excellence. Most recently, he was chosen as the inaugural recipient of the prestigious International Association for Dental Research (IADR) Centennial Emerging Leaders Award for 2020. This international honor recognized his “achievements in dental research, and the potential to further contribute to the IADR and the scientific community worldwide.”

Promoted to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure, Division of Restorative and Prosthetic Dentistry Dr. Lee earned his DDS degree from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He then enrolled at the University of Illinois College of Dentistry and received his Master of Science degree in oral science and a certificate in prosthodontics. His professional career has included serving as an assistant professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry at the University of Illinois College of Dentistry, and as a member of the graduate faculty at the University of Illinois Graduate College.

Since joining Ohio State’s College of Dentistry, Dr. Lee has served as an Associate Professor and Director of the Advanced Prosthodontics Program. As the program director, he has implemented innovations that include emphasizing the importance of specialty board certification, and enhancing residents’ engagement in research endeavors that lead to publications and presentations at national meetings.

In his own research, Dr. Lee’s explorations focus on stress distribution on abutment teeth for removable partial dentures and clasps, and assessing diagnostic tools for dental implant treatment planning and dental implant materials. He has maintained an active research program, and his endeavors have resulted in the publication of numerous peer-reviewed journal articles for which he is the first or major author.

Throughout his career, Dr. Lee has held leadership roles in a number of professional dental organizations. He has served as a site visitor for the Commission on Dental Accreditation; as vice president and president of the Ohio section of the American College of Prosthodontics; as chair of the prosthodontic section of the American Dental Education Association; and as a member of the Board of Directors for the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics. Dr. Lee is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics.

Dr. Heshmati received his DDS degree from the Karolinska Institute medical university in Stockholm, Sweden. He then moved to the U.S. and earned a Master of Public Health degree at the University of Southern Mississippi, and a Master of Science degree in materials science and prosthodontics at Marquette University College of Dentistry. Following that, he completed a fellowship and received his certification in oral and maxillofacial prosthetics at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Dr. Robinson received her DMD degree from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry, after which she completed a prosthodontics residency and earned a certificate at the Medical College of Georgia. She also holds a certificate in business administration from the University of Kentucky.

As an educator, Dr. Heshmati serves primarily as a Clinic Director, overseeing the activities of thirdand fourth-year dental students, monitoring clinical production, the completion of competencies, and providing feedback on performance. He also supports prosthodontic residents by serving as a master’s degree thesis advisor and committee member.

As a clinician, Dr. Heshmati provides his expertise as a consultant for the Wexner Medical Center’s James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute in the treatment of maxillofacial patients. He is also actively involved in caring for oral cancer patients in the college’s Ohio State Dental Faculty Practice. His scholarly endeavors related to his clinical practice have resulted in the publication of numerous articles in educational and prosthodontic journals. Dr. Heshmati is a Fellow of the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics, and he is an invited speaker at national and international conferences where he presents on such topics as dental materials and innovative prosthodontic treatments.

Serving as a faculty advisor for members of the college’s Arab Student Dental Society, Dr. Heshmati has also received numerous Student Government Association teaching awards, in addition to being chosen as an Honored Hooder. Other special efforts include his service as a volunteer and team leader for dental students engaged in PODEMOS medical mission trips.

Damian Lee, DDS, MS

Dr. Robinson currently serves as the Associate Dean for Clinic Administration and Patient Care. Prior to joining Ohio State’s College of Dentistry, she held an array of leadership roles at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry, including the position of Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs; Vice Chief of the Division of Restorative Dentistry; and Chief of the Division of Prosthodontics.

In her role as Associate Dean for Clinic Administration and Patient Care, she provides strategic leadership and oversight of the college’s clinical activities that include dental and dental hygiene students, residents, staff, faculty, and patients. Other responsibilities include ensuring full compliance with accreditation standards and state and federal education, healthcare, and safety regulations.

In addition to her administrative duties, Dr. Robinson conducts research that has led to publications that have been recognized for excellence, including an article titled “Improving a Dental School’s Clinic Operations Using Lean Process Improvement,” that was among the “Editor’s Top Ten Picks” for the 2016 editions of the Journal of Dental Education.

Dr. Robinson has been active as a leader in dental organizations throughout her career, serving as a site visitor for the Commission on Dental Accreditation; as president of the University of Kentucky chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon; and as vice president and secretary/treasurer of the east Georgia section of the American College of Prosthodontists. She is also a Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists and a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics.
