TEACHING, LEARNING AND PATIENT CARE DURING COVID-19
Summer 2020
From the Dean Dear Colleagues: As you read this issue of our Dental Journal, I believe you will be as impressed as I have been with the resilience and commitment so many in our college have demonstrated over the past several months as we have faced head-on all that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought us. In ways I could never have envisioned, we transitioned from what began as yet another productive and rewarding year, to a time in our college’s history that will long be remembered as a phase that required everyone to be as creative, hardworking, flexible, and patient as can be imagined – in other words, to go “above and beyond” every hour of every day. We are proud that this issue documents all that our students, staff, residents, and faculty have done to keep us on track since the university closed on March 9th. Some of these achievements include the fact that our faculty converted more than 40 “in-person” courses to online, virtual formats. Thanks to the residents, staff, and faculty in our advanced education programs in endodontics, general practice, and oral surgery, we continued treating emergency dental patients throughout the COVID-19 crisis. And, following weeks of concentrated efforts and preparation, our students were the first to return to campus to complete their requirements and competencies in order to graduate and begin the next chapter of their lives. Together, we found solutions to hundreds of never-seen-before problems. Those solutions made it possible for us to be where we are today – educating our students, conducting research, caring for patients, and charting our path for the coming academic year. In this issue, you will also find evidence of what we accomplished before the pandemic. These were proud and exciting moments with our students, faculty, and alumni that helped carry us through some of the most difficult days in March, April, and early May. They also serve as reminders of all that we will continue to do once we find our “new normal,” no matter how long that takes. For our many alumni and friends whose names fill 12 pages of this magazine, I want you to know how much we appreciate your gifts that have helped us in this year of financial hurdles due to the COVID-19 closures and the suspension of our clinic operations. We know this has been a trying time for every dental professional, and we are truly grateful for your generosity. You can rest assured that, as always, we will use your gifts for the best possible benefit of our college. As we continue facing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, we will move forward with the same determination and resolve that has made our dental school an institution that is respected and admired. We have educated oral health care practitioners for more than 125 years, and we will come through this experience wiser and better prepared for whatever the future has in store.

TEACHING, LEARNING AND PATIENT CARE DURING COVID-19 Helping Students Safely Complete Assessments During the last week of April, a total of 55 students entered the College of Dentistry’s pre-clinic lab to complete their typodont-only endodontic competency assessment. Completing assessments certainly isn’t an unusual occurrence—during a normal academic year, that is. But with students across the country learning online during the COVID-19 pandemic, Ohio State’s fourth-year dental students had the distinction of becoming the first from the Big 10 dental schools to complete in-person assessments. When Ohio State suspended on-campus classes beginning March 9, many fourthyear dental students had not yet completed their required assessments. College of Dentistry faculty administered some competency exams virtually, but other assessments necessitated a return to Postle Hall. Dean Patrick Lloyd approached university officials in April to gain permission to conduct one of those exams—an endodontic competency assessment—on campus so students could move toward graduation.
“
Our College of Dentistry graduates are among the best-trained dental professionals in the world. We were determined to uphold our standards for educating the most competent dentists despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.
”
- Dean Patrick Lloyd Dean Lloyd provided the university with detailed protocols that would be implemented to ensure the assessment could proceed safely. Utilizing standards established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Ohio State Dental Board, and the American Dental Association, the protocols addressed how and where students would don and doff their personal protective equipment (PPE) before entering and leaving the lab and how social distancing would be maintained. To ensure the assessments proceeded safely, students were scheduled in groups of no more than 23 at a time and all participating students, staff, and faculty were required to complete COVID-19 temperature, symptom, and exposure checks before entering Postle Hall. 3
Ohio State students were among the first in the Big 10 Dental Schools to return to campus for in-person assessments.
“Our Division of Endodontics was so pleased to be able to help 26 students complete their last requirement needed to graduate,” said Sara Fowler, DMD, MS, Assistant Professor, who worked closely with her colleagues in endodontics to plan the assessment. “An additional 29 students were also able to complete competencies and non-patient experiences that moved them closer to graduation.” Many of the students expressed their gratitude to the college’s faculty and staff who helped them achieve their goals during their return to Postle Hall. Class of 2020 dental student Chase Culbertson was among the participants finalizing his requirements
for graduation. “The Endodontics Division was incredibly helpful in our return to the college. They were willing to work with us to find reasonable alternatives to show clinical competency and were very efficient in implementing those steps. Our class is so grateful to [the faculty] for their hard work in this difficult time.” After the success of the exams, the college requested and was granted permission from the university to complete additional non-patient assessments and, shortly thereafter, a limited return to the dental clinic so the members of the Class of 2020 could finish their requirements and continue to the next stage of their dental journey. college news

There have been many lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic, and that is especially true for healthcare providers and researchers who are still seeking answers to help patients avoid or recover from the virus. With the pandemic shedding additional light on healthcare disparities among vulnerable populations, The Ohio State University College of Dentistry created a timely experience for senior dental hygiene and dental students to learn more about their patients’ needs. While College of Dentistry students were learning virtually from home, the college launched a COVID-19 clinical experience to enhance students’ social awareness. “The COVID-19 virus has shed a harsh light on disparities in access to care,” Patrick Lloyd, dean of the College of Dentistry, said. “Educating our students about these disparities has always been a part of our curriculum through our OHIO Project. We expanded that program to include this experience so our students can leave our college with a greater understanding of career choices and with an enhanced social awareness.” Led by Canise Bean, DMD, MPH, Professor-Clinical, Division of Restorative and Prosthetic Dentistry, and director of the college’s OHIO Project, the three-week clinical experience started with students meeting in teams with two faculty facilitators. During those discussions, the students identified the many impacts the pandemic has
had on vulnerable Ohioans and on the dental profession. Students prepared a short, virtual presentation on one of the topics that emerged from their discussions and presented their findings to their peers. The result was a learning and growing opportunity for students that will serve them in their practices for potentially the rest of their careers.
“This clinical experience provided a wealth of learning for our students during a time when they couldn’t physically be in the clinic,” Dr. Bean said. “The experience couldn’t have happened without the great mix of enthusiastic and able faculty who worked closely with the students to lead them through the program.” Following the presentations, Class of ’20 participants Dana Akel and Andrea Tsatalis—who created a video about access-to-care issues resulting from the pandemic—were voted by their peers as having the “best of the best” presentation. Their winning video earned them each a $500 scholarship.

College of Dentistry Joins Team to Address Critical Supply Shortage By Mike Huson, Public Relations Coordinator, Ohio State Institute for Materials Research
In a collaborative effort led by Ohio State’s Institute for Materials Research (IMR), scientists, engineers and manufacturers worked together during the pandemic to combat the shortage of critical supplies in Ohio. A coalition that included the College of Dentistry joined to deliver 3D-printed nasopharyngeal swabs to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, which is partnering with the Ohio Department of Health to increase the availability of supplies needed for testing citizens for COVID-19. “Health systems worldwide have struggled because of the critical shortage of test kit components, including the swabs used to collect samples and the sterile solution needed to transport the swabs,” Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said during an address on April 15. In mid-March, Peter Mohler, PhD, Vice Dean of Research at the College of Medicine told IMR about the critical need for swabs. Before long, Ohio State talent that included engineers, clinicians and staff from the Wexner Medical Center and across the university were working on a solution.
7
Early into investigating swab manufacturing options, researchers joined a burgeoning academic-industry-government consortium being led by Harvard University, with contributors that include the U.S. Army, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the University of South Florida. Through the consortium, Ohio State connected with Formlabs, a leading manufacturer of 3D printing systems, and Concordance Healthcare Solutions, one of the six national medical supply distributors working with FEMA on PPE and other national supply needs. As luck would have it, both companies were based in Ohio. The two firms worked together with Northwell Health, New York’s largest healthcare provider, and the University of South Florida to lock down the design and production of the swabs. With the green light from Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center, row after row of 3D printers kicked on and ran around the clock in the Formlabs facility in Millbury, Ohio. Next, the College of Dentistry carried out the crucial step of
repackaging the bulk shipments into individual swabs, then sterilizing each one before sending them on to the medical center for kitting with vials of transport medium.
“We are fortunate and pleased to be part of such meaningful and rewarding work that will benefit so many during such a critical time,” said Fonda Robinson, DMD, Associate Dean of Clinic Administration and Patient Care. By the end of the initiative, the college had repackaged and sterilized 70,000 swabs. Governor DeWine described the initiative as “Ohioans coming together to solve a problem” and an example of “Ohio ingenuity.”

Meeting the Challenge of COVID-19
1|
The college’s dental clinics closed on March 16 after Ohio and the university declared a state of emergency. College of Dentistry faculty and residents, however, continued to safely provide emergency dental care throughout the pandemic. Patients were first examined by General Practice Residency providers who treated them or referred them to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Endodontics, or other specialty clinics.
2 | Even during a pandemic, the routines and celebrations so important to life at the university were not forgotten. Many ceremonies were re-imagined as virtual celebrations, including Ohio State’s 2020 Spring Commencement. On May 3, the College of Dentistry banner stood alongside other colleges’ banners in Ohio Stadium where it was seen by viewers around the world during the historic virtual event. The keynote address was delivered by Apple CEO Tim Cook.
3 | On May 26, students began returning to Postle Hall to continue their spring semester clinical and pre-clinical lab coursework. The return to campus was approved by the university following the college’s safe administering of non-patient assessments earlier in May. Faculty utilized enlarging technology in the pre-clinical lab to help maintain social distancing.

4 | Students, staff, and faculty log their temperatures at home before coming to Postle Hall. Additionally, staff volunteering at screening stations located at building entrances provide temperature checks and level-1 masks when needed.
5 | In early June, Dean Lloyd surveyed work on an operatory that served as a prototype for engineers and safety experts to evaluate the effectiveness of the college’s additional infection control protocols. The new operatory safety features—including Plexiglass to extend walls to the ceiling; a hospital-grade curtain to seal the “doorway,” and high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter to evacuate particles during aerosol-generating procedures—are being autilized throughout the college’s 180 open-air operatories.
6 | Members of the college’s Clinic Administration Office aided the OSU Medical Center’s efforts to prepare N-95 respirators for sterilization by Columbus-based Battelle. Clinic staff did everything from assembling respirator collection bins, to labeling masks, to delivering them to the medical center to be forwarded to Battelle for sterilization. Respirators can be used up to twenty times with proper sterilization. The college played a critical role in bolstering the personal protective equipment (PPE) supply chain.

2020 Convocation On Saturday, June 20, 2020, staff and faculty joined members of the Classes of 2020 and their families to celebrate their achievements during the college’s firstever virtual convocation. Dean Patrick Lloyd, who presided over the historic event, congratulated the graduates for their resilience during the challenges of the pandemic. “We have been through the most challenging time that any of us have ever seen as we have faced a once-in-a-century global pandemic that has changed us and challenged us in ways we could not have imagined,” Dean Lloyd said. “But even in the midst of this, we have made progress, and we have found solutions to problems, and we have discovered that we can achieve great things even when the odds seem to be overwhelming. These successes have shown us that the future still holds great promise, and that we can continue to build, to grow, to overcome, to achieve—and to celebrate, as we are doing today while we honor our dental and dental hygiene graduates.”
Dental Hygiene Class President Julie Gable, ’20 DHY, and Dental Class President David Budge, ’20 DDS, addressed their classmates virtually during convocation.

How an “unforgettable” interview led to a dream career and a meaningful gift for the future
I have often said that I gained admission to The Ohio State University College of Dentistry based on human pity. Please allow me to explain.
I grew up in western Pennsylvania and attended a small branch of the University of Pittsburgh. When I decided to apply to dental school it seemed logical for me to apply to schools on the East Coast. Schools like Pitt, Georgetown, Temple, Maryland, and NYU were logical choices. A local orthodontist who was familiar with Ohio State suggested that I apply there as well.
By Scott Little, ’81 DDS
I had already interviewed at three schools when I was invited for an interview in Columbus. Ohio State was about a four-and-a-half hour drive from my home, west on Route 70. When the day of my interview came, I had two circumstances to deal with: I had to drive in one of the worst snowstorms of that year, and I had a severe head cold—the type that seems to take over your entire face. My strategy was to take my cold medication early in the morning to help me deal with the long drive. I would take a second dose near the time of my interview to help avoid being overcome by symptoms while communicating to the committee.
“
The day that we completed our gift commitment was one of the happiest days of my life. I felt a certain reconciliation and a continued pride.
”
When I entered Postle Hall, I was immediately impressed. As I was taken on my tour, I noticed that the building was much newer than the facilities I had seen during my interviews at the other schools. When I was shown the two large lecture rooms, I had already decided I wanted to attend Ohio State. The interview began well enough, but after about five minutes the combined action of my nervous system and the medication began to take effect. As I attempted to answer questions, my mouth became devoid of any moisture. My upper lip became adherent to the labial surfaces of my teeth and my tongue began to cleave to the roof of my mouth. After struggling through several sentences, I said something that sounded like, “ Duthingi gunave a gring uv wanner?!” (Translation: Do you think I can have a drink of water?!) Dr. Wendell Lotz, who was sitting immediately to my right and had the closest view of the occurring meltdown, stood up so rapidly that his legs pounded against the bottom of the conference table. As I gratefully clutched the glass of water and experienced its relief, I concluded that this was probably the last time I would ever see the dental school at Ohio State. When I received my acceptance letter a few weeks later, I could only assume that I had left an unforgettable impression. Nearly 43 years later, I know that attending Ohio State was one of the most important blessings of my life. I always had confidence that I had attended one of the finest institutions in the country. For nearly 20 years now I have needed to wear a hat for protection and warmth. Most typically it is an Ohio State hat. It elicits a response almost everywhere I go. I continue to be grateful for my education. I want Ohio State to continue to be seen as one of the finest dental colleges in the country. A new facility has been necessary and overdue. This past December, my wife and I made the largest charitable commitment of our lives to the college. We hope that it can help a new generation of students. I admit that I had to coach myself towards this. The day that we completed our gift was one of the happiest days of my life. I felt a certain reconciliation and a continued pride. We hope that our support will help the school continue to provide a superior education for future dental professionals. I am now a Pennsylvanian transplanted to the state of Florida. Regardless of where I am, I always know that I was blessed to become a Buckeye. ■ 13
Getting Personal
Dean Patrick Lloyd and Dr. Sharon Parsons (center) with her staff.
A Visit With ODA President Sharon Parsons, ’81 DDS In February, before most of the world had ever heard the words COVID-19, Dean Patrick Lloyd met with Ohio Dental Association (ODA) President Sharon Parsons, continuing a tradition he began soon after he was appointed as dean of the College of Dentistry. Each year, he arranges a meeting with the ODA president to explore opportunities to collaborate. During their discussion, Dr. Parsons explained how her priorities have been shaped by her personal experiences.
diversity in dentistry. “We’re falling behind in the numbers of minority groups entering the profession—and that includes members of the LGBTQ+ community,” she said. As a result, she asked College of Dentistry Clinical Professor Canise Bean, DMD, MPH, Division of Restorative and Prosthetic Dentistry, to chair a diversity committee that is charged with determining how the ODA can assist in attracting and retaining members from various demographic backgrounds to the profession.
Asked by Dean Lloyd what the biggest challenge is to being ODA president while running her family practice, Dr. Parsons responded with a chuckle, “Keeping everything straight!” In actuality, she planned ahead before taking on her new role. She timed her tenure to coincide with her son, Michael Herman, DDS, joining her practice and she entered the office with a clear vision about what she wanted to achieve. Knowing her one-year tenure would go quickly, she hit the ground running by visiting dental societies around Ohio and communicating her agenda.
Another focus area for Dr. Parsons is opioid addiction. This, too, has its roots in her personal experiences. Her oldest son, Sean, died of an overdose in 2017 after becoming addicted to opioids he took to relieve pain from an injury. She has since spoken to local and national audiences about the dangers of over prescribing. Joined by College of Dentistry Professor Purnima Kumar, BDS, MS, PhD, Division of Periodontology, as well as various representatives from dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, and the addiction recovery community, Dr. Parsons established the ODA Opioid Coalition to share information about addiction prevention and any new emerging substance abuse issues.
A first-generation college student, Dr. Parsons knew from an early age she wanted to be a dentist. Having never met a female dentist when she was growing up, she wants to do what she can to support the trend of increasing numbers of women entering the profession. “I want to encourage women to find their strength—their strength may be different from that of men,” she said. Perhaps because of her sensitivity to the importance of accessible role models, Dr. Parsons has focused on
As she nears the end of her presidency, Dr. Parsons has demonstrated she is serving her dental colleagues in the same way she serves her patients—by concentrating on those things that matter most. “What’s most important at the end of the day is feeling good about what you do,” she said. ■

ARE E-CIGARETTES LESS DANGEROUS TO ORAL HEALTH THAN CIGARETTES? Don’t bet on it, says Dr. Purnima Kumar Purnima Kumar, BDS, ’05 MS, ’05 PhD, has for years studied the impact of cigarette smoking on periodontal health and disease. As e-cigarettes have surged in popularity, the Ohio State College of Dentistry clinician-scientist has now turned her attention to their impact on oral health—with startling findings.
Your current research into e-cigarettes and vaping was preceded by your research on cigarette smoking. Why were you interested in smoking? To me, smoking has both a professional and very personal connection. My father was a lifelong smoker and died from complications related to smoking. He was the bravest man I knew—an officer in the Air Force who had been in three wars—and yet could not conquer a habit. On a professional level, I’m a periodontist, and a lot of people I treat are smokers. I have been a dental surgeon for 30 years now, but for these patients, the outcomes of surgery are not good at all. The question is always: Why are their outcomes so poor? What does smoking do to your mouth to cause disease and to impede efforts in treating the disease?
How did you then become interested in e-cigarettes? When e-cigarettes were introduced into the marketplace, we quickly found that there were no data out there about them. There was nothing known. We started by studying e-cigarettes only in people who don’t have gum disease. We wanted to know what happens to you when you’re healthy and start this habit.
What happens when people start using e-cigarettes? The first thing we looked at was how e-cigarettes change the friendly bacteria in the mouth. We found that they make these bacteria completely toxic. Even the good bacteria in the mouth when exposed to vapor produced a gelatinous goo—they get very stressed. I grew bacteria from my own mouth in a petri dish under different conditions. When there’s no e-cigarette vapor, I can brush it off with a toothbrush. But when exposed to vaping, the bacteria starts looking like phlegm. As a periodontist, I’m seeing people who use e-cigarettes in their mid-twenties and thirties who have receding gums and need gum grafts. Gum grafts never work well on these patients, so now I’m studying what e-cigarettes may do to deter wound healing. We are taking people who vape and giving them a highly standardized 17
D I D YO U K N OW ? The term “vaping” is misleading because there is no actual vapor made from water; the e-juice is actually made of propylene glycol and glycerol, which produce formaldehyde when heated. This is the same chemical that is used to mummify bodies.
e-cigarette and comparing them to a control group. What we are finding is when we make a little punch in the roof of the mouth for the study, the non-vaping group begins to heal within four days. In seven days no one would know the wound was ever there. With the e-cigarette group, at 21 days the wound still hasn’t healed. We also did a study on a group of people who quit smoking and started using e-cigarettes, and a group who quit smoking without them. What we’re finding is when people quit smoking and don’t use anything, their oral bacteria start looking healthy. But when they quit and start using e-cigarettes, the negative effect on mouth bacteria is very powerful and happens much quicker than through smoking. Our smokers in the study had been smoking at least five years, and our e-cigarette users had been smoking 12-18 months. The effect of e-cigarettes is very accelerated and exaggerated.
And yet these e-cigarettes are really popular with young people, right? Oh, yes, very popular among young people. The same flavors that are in candy are also in e-cigarettes. In addition, the nicotine used in some brands of e-cigarettes provides a high very quickly.
What do you tell young people about vaping? I go out and give talks at high schools and colleges. I take travel cans of hair spray and say, “How many of you vape?” Hands always go up. I say, “Take this hair spray and spray it in your mouth. This is an aerosol, just like an e-cigarette.” Of course, no one wants to do that. Then I’ll ask them: “If you won’t use this, why are you using that?” These are kids who think they can walk in front of a bus and not get hit. So they don’t relate to data on sickness and death; we have to begin these conversations by breaking down the myths about safety. Young people are very intelligent. If you show them the way, they’ll find their answers.
If someone switches from cigarettes to vaping, are they doing themselves any favors? I would say not. They’re replacing one addiction with another. At least with smoking cessation, we have a few tools to help. We don’t even know how to treat e-cigarette addiction. The jury is still out on whether e-cigarettes help you quit smoking successfully, but then how do you quit e-cigarette juice? That’s one we don’t have an answer to.
What’s next for you? I have a grant that is under review to look at the impact of e-cigarettes on pregnant women. To me, that is very important—we really have to look toward the generations that have not yet come and leave the world a better place for them. That’s my fundamental philosophy. I’m also involved in different kinds of engagement and leadership roles. We can’t just do research all the time. We can change the world one patient at a time, but we also have to change the world for the larger population, so having leadership roles in making policy decisions is important. ■ faculty news

A Graduate’s View of Professionalism and Ethics As the College of Dentistry continues to focus on professionalism and ethics as the launching initiative for its five-year Strategic Plan, alumnus Tara Haid, ’01 DDS, brought her perspective to a work group of students, staff, and faculty who assembled to champion the initiative throughout the college. Dr. Haid is enthusiastic about the work group, which concluded its initial efforts this spring. Dr. Haid has been practicing as a general dentist since 2001 after she graduated from the College of Dentistry and completed her General Practice Dr. Tara Haid Residency at Yale New Haven Hospital. She has a particular interest in focusing on professionalism and ethics in the next generation of dental professionals. “We have a wonderful profession,” she said. “It is important for students to understand in the midst of all their clinical and didactic training that they must not lose sight of the fact that our community is held to a higher standard. As in sports, ‘You play like you practice.’ Therefore, if you do not practice being professional and ethical in your training, then upon graduating (when it is game time), who’s to say you won’t be tempted to make decisions based on needs or wants that are different than those of your patients’?” Dr. Haid feels it is beneficial to the college’s community and the college’s graduates as a whole to have had alumni represented in the work group—especially considering that students become alumni in a few short years. And while she feels professionalism and ethics are an important focus in dental education, Dr. Haid is proud of the high level of ethics she sees in the profession overall. “Interestingly, in the 19 years that I have been practicing, I have not seen a lot of problems related to professionalism and ethics amongst our new graduates as a whole. The times that I have seen any problems had nothing to do with age, ethnicity, or gender—but were instead specific to that person. In essence, I have seen people older and younger and for different reasons push the envelope on professionalism and ethics. Sometimes they have succumbed to outside pressures and other times it is just simply how they are.” Dr. Haid continued, “It is important to teach students that our patients look to us for professional opinions because they trust us. They trust that, as their dental health care provider, we will assist them in making the right decisions for themselves based on their needs and concerns without the influence of outside pressures.” ■

Swedish Fellow CONTRIBUTES TO
Dental Hygiene Classes By Rachel Kearney, ’05 BSDH, ’07 MS, Associate Professor and Chair, Division of Dental Hygiene During the autumn semester, Division of Dental Hygiene Students’ curriculum was enhanced by the contributions of international fellow Ulrika Lindmark, PhD, who came to the College of Dentistry as part of The Ohio State University’s partnership with the Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education (STINT). Dr. Lindmark joined the division from her position as an associate professor in Oral Health Sciences at the School of Health and Welfare at Jonkoping University in Sweden. With a diploma in dental hygiene from Halmstead University in Halmstead, Sweden; bachelor’s and master’s degrees in public health sciences; and a PhD in oral health sciences from Jönköping University in Småland, Sweden, Dr. Lindmark has extensive experience in teaching and research and focuses her work on the social determinants of health, particularly from a salutogenic (healthy) perspective.
Ulrika Lindmark, PhD The Teacher Becomes a Student While Swedish educator Dr. Ulrika Lindmark was sharing her expertise with College of Dentistry students during the autumn semester, she was also learning about the differences between dental hygiene education in America versus what she is used to at home. Attracted to the College of Dentistry because of the college’s focus on educating dental hygiene students alongside dental students, Dr. Lindmark came
Dr. Lindmark contributed to a dental hygiene course in the BSDH and BS degree completion programs covering oral health behavior change, enhancing the content on social determinants of health and behavior change theory. In addition to using her expertise in determinants of health and the preventative approach to disease management to enhance the Dental Hygiene curriculum, Dr. Lindmark shared with the division information about the profession of dentistry in Sweden and how it compares to dentistry in the United States. Having an international fellow through the STINT program allowed dental hygiene students to learn about dentistry from a global perspective. For example, first-year College of Dentistry dental hygiene students had the opportunity to learn about sleep apnea from a Swedish doctoral candidate through a virtual connection in the classroom. Although Dr. Lindmark has returned to Sweden to assume a new teaching role at Jönköping University, the Division of Dental Hygiene looks forward to future collaborations with her and her international colleagues. ■ 21
to Ohio State “to see the similarities and differences in how we reach our goals.” One notable difference she observed is how dental hygiene students are taught to check vitals on patients, which is not currently done in Sweden. She also observed more flexibility than she’s used to in the college’s syllabus, calling it a “living document” and observing how it can change quickly based on the emerging needs of the profession. Dr. Lindmark’s most interesting insights have come more informally—from the conversations she’s had with the people of Ohio State. “I’m so grateful for the College of Dentistry having me. This has been a great experience and a real pleasure.”
Giving Kids a Smile College of Dentistry is Fortunate to Host its Semi-Annual Event before the Pandemic For Marcus Troyer, Give Kids A Smile (GKAS) is a fullday outing for his family. His five-hour round-trip drive from Ft. Wayne, Indiana, is worth it when he witnesses his sons’ eyes light up at the sight of Ohio Stadium and he sees all of his children receive good dental care. A “die-hard Buckeye fan,” the self-employed father of five started visiting the dental clinics as a patient in 2011 when he still lived in Columbus. Cost conscious because he doesn’t have dental insurance and because his family has experienced financial difficulties, Mr. Troyer is grateful to receive quality care for his children. He started bringing his children—now ranging in ages from three to 10—to GKAS five years ago. The trips continued even after the Troyer family relocated to a neighboring state. “I learned to trust the people here because of the quality of the work,” he said. For the student leaders who organize the event, Mr. Troyer’s sentiments are gratifying. The hours of dedication and work it takes to put on the massive event is worthwhile when they know they’re helping kids and families in need. During the February 8 event, dental and dental hygiene students, under faculty supervision, provided over $26,000 in free dental treatment to 90 children. “We believe instilling the importance of regular dental care at a young age is important. We are excited to give back to the children of our community by providing free dental care and promoting happy, healthy smiles,” said GKAS President Ronit Majumdar ’21 (DDS). ■

STAFF SPOTLIGHT Getting to Know Debbie Getting to Know Craig Ramsey, Marchese ’80 C-Certificate, ’03 BS, Director of Building Services Clinic/Patient Care Coordinator, Advanced Prosthodontics
Q) What do you like best about your job? A) I enjoy collaborating with staff, residents, and faculty throughout our college. I don’t think there is any one area that works alone without the combined efforts of many who aid in our mission. I enjoy the sharing of our efforts and the rewards of helping patients receive exemplary care and students and residents attain academic success. Through these processes, I am fortunate to have met so many wonderful people.
Q) What has your experience as a Wellness Innovator been like? A) I was honored to be asked to join this initiative. The university has developed a comprehensive and
integrated structure to promote wellness. As an Innovator, I have enjoyed planning and developing programs as an auxiliary to the university-wide initiative. The university provides a vast collection of resources for us to access; it has been interesting to see departments develop their own healthy and fun challenges to improve or maintain a healthy workday. For example, one neighboring clinic created a friendly challenge to pack lunch instead of buying lunch. What a creative way to benefit both nutrition and the wallet!
Q) What do you like best about Ohio State? A) Without a doubt, it is a true privilege to be employed at The Ohio State University. I think the energy of the campus is what I like best—from the youthfulness and excitement of our undergraduate population to the drive and focus of our graduate and professional students.
Q) What do you like to do outside of work? A) Our daughters moved back to Columbus after living four years out west, and I cherish visits with them,
family and friends. My husband and I like remodeling and home improvement projects. We are certainly not professional “flippers” but we do find much enjoyment in the process and happiness in the finished product.
Q) Anything else you’d like to share? A) I graduated from our college’s Dental Hygiene Program in the early ’80’s. It’s been reassuring to see our hygiene program continue to be the stellar bachelor’s program it has always been. The assimilation of hygiene/pre-doctoral students working collaboratively on the clinic floor has created a real-life working relationship that will foster professional growth upon graduation. I was born and raised in Columbus and have been a lifelong Buckeye! Oddly, I’ve never lived more than 7 miles from “The Shoe.”

Dear Fellow Buckeyes,
D E N TA L ALUMNI SOCIETY President’s Letter
Just a few months ago, plans were taking shape regarding dental commencement alongside rising excitement over the expected completion of the new Postle Hall, just in time for the beginning of this Fall 2020 semester. Personally, I was reflecting on what wisdom I could impart to this graduating class at Convocation in a few weeks. My President’s Letter for this Dental Journal was finished and submitted for publication. My wife and I were planning for our son’s college graduation, overjoyed to see his future unfold as he continues into graduate school. We all knew there was an unexpected storm coming our way, but we had no idea that it would take form as something that’d impact our lives, much less the entire planet. Then, it arrived. The novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, has fundamentally altered all of our lives, our interactions with family and friends, and the way we do/ will practice dentistry for the foreseeable future. Since February, things have been in so much flux in our society that this is my third iteration of my President’s Letter to keep it current and relevant. Some of us have not had any physical contact with our elderly parents for months. We talk every day about the PPP, PPE’s, social distancing, “flattening the curve”, and asymptomatic but infectious individuals. Some of us wonder how long our practices and/or families can survive financially. What happens if the country has to shut down again? We now live in color-coded counties, based on assessed infection risk. For people like me, living with Type1 diabetes, or others with chronic health conditions, we have to make the calculation whether returning to work is potentially a life or death proposition. Let’s be honest, we are not receiving any coordinated or consistent guidance between our elected officials and the scientific/ medical community. Politics has gotten involved and has sown confusion amongst the populace. There is almost no data that is neutral that both sides are willing to agree on to formulate a consistent response to this pandemic, which is shameful. The poison pill of politics has even forced the resignation of the Ohio Health Director, Youngstown native and fellow OSU graduate, Dr Amy

Acton. Why? Protesters, exercising their First Amendment rights, regularly congregated outside her home in Columbus, with some carrying firearms. Also, it is reported that protestors with anti-Semitic signage were at other protests. (The Guardian, June 12, 2020) Really? Buckeyes, I have no answers for you. Actually, I take that back. The College of Dentistry has been a shining light here at OSU these past few months. Congratulations, Dean Lloyd, for your accomplishments on behalf of the College of Dentistry and its dental students during these chaotic times. The OSU College of Dentistry was the first college on campus to open back up after the university shut down. This took tremendous planning to convince the OSU Board of Trustees that reopening could be done safely for faculty, staff, and students. Amazingly, the students were able to complete their requirements, final exams, including boards, and move on to the next chapter in their lives. All this while the construction of the new Postle Hall is continuing. It was my honor to participate in the College of Dentistry’s first Virtual Convocation. Let’s all hope it’s the last one, too. This, Buckeyes, is what leadership looks like. The COVID-19 does not care about your politics or whether you think it is a big deal or not. Your actions, or inaction, can have a direct life or death impact on those around you. We, as dentists, understand this concept already. So, let’s practice universal precautions outside the office, too. People need us, pandemic or not. Believe that our Ohio State University education is second to none, and we are good at what we do. Use your down time to improve your skill sets. Follow your community guidelines for social distancing, mask usage, etc. Rest, and exercise. Be a good example to others in your sphere of influence. These are difficult times, and the magnitude has yet to be fully realized. However, you, individually, still have the power to choose how you will interact with your circumstances. This too shall pass. Buckeyes, be well, and safe.

Remembering William R. Wallace, ’56 DDS, ’62 MS
The College of Dentistry mourns the loss of former Dean William R. Wallace, ‘56 DDS, ‘62 MS who passed away on July 15, 2020, at the age of 87. Dr. Wallace was born in Warren, Ohio, near Youngstown. After receiving his bachelor’s and DDS degrees at The Ohio State University, he practiced general dentistry as an officer in the U.S. Public Health Service in San Francisco. While in San Francisco, Dr. Wallace served U.S. military personnel, and he had the unique experience of providing dental care to inmates at the Alcatraz Federal Prison. In 1959, Dr. Wallace returned to Ohio with his wife, Jane, and his family. He earned his MS in the College of Dentistry’s Oral Surgery program before joining what was then known as the Department of Oral Surgery as a faculty member. After more than nine years of dedicated service, Dr. Wallace was named chair of the department in 1971. During his tenure, Dr. Wallace also served as the assistant dean for graduate studies and he provided dental services to students in Ohio State’s athletics program. He served as the college’s acting dean in 1974 and again in 1980 before being appointed as dean in 1981. During his 10 years as dean, Dr. Wallace led a number of substantial renovations to Postle Hall that included establishing a central sterilization and instrument storage room; launching the Dental Faculty Practice to provide patient care and support faculty recruitment and retention; and ushering in a new emphasis on faculty members’ research and related publications. Dr. Wallace retired from the College of Dentistry in 1991. “Dr. Wallace truly valued the importance of research as a tool to move the profession and specialty forward,” said Peter Larsen, DDS, Chair of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dental Anesthesiology. “As the dean, he recruited Dr. Larry Peterson as Chair of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. During Dr. Peterson’s tenure, the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency became a nationally and internationally respected program. The Dental Anesthesiology program was also started at that
time. I will always personally remain grateful to Dr. Wallace for taking a chance on a young and inexperienced kid fresh out of residency when he and Larry Peterson hired me. I owe my career to them both.” Henry Fields, DDS, MS, MSD, professor in the Division of Orthodontics, succeeded Dr. Wallace as dean. “Bill Wallace was a clinician in a clinical college. He was proud of that and of his peers,” Dr. Fields said. “Many had been recognized for their clinical skills and thinking. He saw how a change to a clinical and research-based ideology could benefit dentistry and the college. That change made a dramatic difference in how the college was regarded by the university and the National Institutes of Health. He was a transformational dean. On a personal note, he and Jane were welcoming to me, and we were friends. He provided guidance in organized dentistry that was excellent counsel for me and the college. I will miss him.” Reflecting on Dr. Wallace’s contribution of elevating research while maintaining the college’s national reputation for excellence in clinical education, Joel Weaver, ’72 DDS, ’76 PhD, professor emeritus in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dental Anesthesiology, said, “Change in any endeavor is never easy, and shifting direction after decades of momentum in our college was a risk that Dr. Wallace never hesitated to make. Our college flourished under his leadership and he set the stage for every dean since. It has been wonderful to have him as a mentor, a colleague and close personal friend, and I will miss him dearly.”

Beau Meyer, ’14 DDS, MPH An alumnus of Ohio State’s College of Dentistry, Dr. Meyer joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Pediatric Dentistry on July 1st. After receiving his DDS degree from the college, he completed a Master’s in Public Health (MPH) degree and earned his certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. His professional experience includes serving as an adjunct Assistant Professor in the Division of Pediatric Dentistry at Ohio State, and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at UNC. Dr. Meyer’s research interests focus on the management of oral diseases in pediatric patients; diet and behavior as it impacts children’s oral health; and the use of hospital-based care to treat early childhood caries. Since graduating from Ohio State in 2014, Dr. Meyer has received a number of honors and awards that include the Resident Recognition Award from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry; the Graduate Student Research Award from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry; the James Bawden Mentor Award from the North Carolina Section of the American Association for Dental Research; and he is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Justin Kaspar, PhD On July 1st, Dr. Kaspar joined the college as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Biosciences. After earning a B.S. degree in microbiology from Texas A&M University, he completed a Ph.D. in biomedical sciences in the College of Medicine at the University of Florida in 2016. He then served as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Oral Biology at the University of Florida’s College of Dentistry, where he conducted research funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health – National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research. Dr. Kaspar’s early research projects investigated bacterial communication in the caries-causing microbe Streptococcus mutans, and the ways that environmental perturbations and intermicrobial interactions within oral biofilms can impact the pathogen’s ability to survive and persist. His current research is focused on specific gene expression patterns displayed by Streptococcus mutans in response to competition by health-associated commensal streptococci within the oral cavity. In addition, he is examining new mechanisms by which oral bacteria “fight back” against their disease-causing rivals. His work seeks to determine new pathways that could serve as targets for therapeutic interventions that selectively remove pathogens like Streptococcus mutans from the oral cavity, while keeping the normal, healthy microbiome intact. As a member of the college faculty, Dr. Kaspar conducts research, contributes to the division’s didactic teaching responsibilities, and he supports curriculum development to ensure the highest quality of educational experiences for pre-doctoral students. ■
