Preparing for Your Stay Getting Here Ohio Stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Medical Center is easily accessible from all areas of Ohio and only 20 minutes from the Port Columbus International Airport. Due to our expansion project which will allow us to provide high-quality care to more patients, your route and driving times may be affected. Please allow extra travel time and print off the latest set of maps and directions to your destination. Other closures and changes that are part of the Medical Centerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s expansion project will be noted on our maps. Parking All garages at the Medical Center have designated handicapped parking spaces and elevators available. Parking for patients and visitors is available in the following garages:

• 12th Avenue Parking Garage: Enter the garage on 12th Avenue. Please note that 12th Avenue is closed to thru traffic until late 2011. Follow the detour signs to the garage entrance. On level three, a bridge connects the garage to the Medical Center, specifically Doan Hall and Postle Dental Clinic. Handicapped spaces are available on the east side of levels one and three. Parking Discounts for Patients and Their Visitors Reduced rate parking is available for patients and their visitors parking in the 12th Avenue or SAFEAUTO Hospitals garages. The reduced rate parking pass allows you to park for $2 per exit or for each day you remain parked in the garage. You must use a new pass each time you exit. Patients and their visitors can get parking discount cards at registration or at any Information Desk. After 10:30 p.m., you can get the cards at the Emergency Department Information Desk. Patient Valet Parking To use the service, simply drive to the front of Rhodes Hall or the Ross Heart Hospital. A valet attendant will assist you. Patients and their visitors can have their valet claim checks validated at registration or any Information Desk to receive the discounted rate of $5 per park or for each day. All other valet users will be charged $11 per park or for each day. Valet Hours: Monday - Friday

After hours vehicle pick-up is available at the Rhodes Hall entrance until midnight. After midnight on weekdays, and on weekends and holidays, call Hospital Security at 614-293-8500. Free Park & Ride and Shuttle Service Free Park and Ride Shuttles provide transportation to and from Medical Center parking garages and buildings Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Call buttons are located at the main entrances of each Medical Center building and in all patient and visitor garages. To request this shuttle service, please call 614-293-8669. Also, scheduled shuttles run from OSU Medical Center to OSU Martha Morehouse Medical Plaza and to University Hospital East. If you require transportation help after 6 p.m., please visit the Rhodes Hall Information Desk for cab or other transportation information. Please note that you will be responsible for the cost of this service. Escorts We know that you’ll be spending a lot of time visiting your loved one and you may be leaving the Medical Center after dark. If you would like an escort to your vehicle, you may request one by calling Hospital Security at 614-293-8500. 5

Cell Phones and Other Electronic Equipment For your safety, cell phones and other radiotransmitting devices should not be used in patient care areas. They must be turned off, not just placed on standby. Signals from these devices can interfere with patient care equipment and put patients in danger. Unit nursing staff must approve other electronic devices you would like to use during your stay. 8

Electrical appliances including hair dryers, curling irons, razors, radios, heating pads, portable heaters, VCRs and other devices are not permitted in patient rooms. You may use only battery-operated devices.

Tobacco-Free Policy At The Ohio State University Medical Center, we care about the health of our patients, visitors and staff. That’s why all of our locations – inside and outside – are 100 percent tobacco-free. We understand that nicotine is addictive, and we regret the inconvenience to tobacco users. However, as an academic medical center with leading cancer and heart hospitals, creating a healthy environment for everyone who attends, works and visits our Medical Center is important.

Financial Assistance Programs The Medical Center recognizes that some people cannot pay for all or part of their healthcare services. There are three programs to help you with the cost of your medical care: • Medicaid • Hospital Care Assurance Program (HCAP) • Charity Care Program If you want to learn more about these programs, please call 614-293-0860. A financial counselor will begin the application process. The eligibility requirements vary for each program. However, all programs are based on the Federal Poverty Guidelines, require proof of financial situation and are based on family size. You can prove your finances with any of these documents: • Pay stubs • Income tax returns • Payroll information

• Letter from your employer • Letter from an open shelter

Family size is based on counting you, a spouse and any children under the age of 18 years old living with you in your legal custody. The hospital’s financial counselor can explain this further and answer any other questions you may have. Services not covered by these programs include: • Doctor fees • Transportation fees • Dental services

• Unneeded medical services • Prescriptions • Durable medical equipment

During Your Stay Visitation Policy For the comfort of our patients, we recommend only two visitors in a patient room at any one time. Talk with your nurse if you would like additional visitors. All visitors must wear shirts and shoes and be free of illness. Children are able to visit when accompanied and properly supervised by a non-patient adult. The child is considered one of your two visitors. Children may visit Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients by checking with staff first. General Patient Care Areas OSU Medical Center encourages visitation to promote healing. Visitation is permitted 24 hours a day in most areas of the Medical Center. Please check with staff in the patient care unit to confirm the policy for that area. From 10 p.m.– 5 a.m., patients are limited to one visitor. Overnight visitors must wear an identification badge at all times. Guidelines and badges are available from the Rhodes Hall information desk. Intensive Care Units No live flowers, food, drink or cell phones are permitted in any of the ICUs.

Pastoral Care Chaplains are available to listen, talk, reflect, pray, offer sacraments and provide other spiritual support. A sanctuary is located in the Atrium waiting area on the fifth floor of Rhodes Hall. For a schedule of worship services or to request a visit with a chaplain, please call the Department of Chaplaincy at 614-293-8791 from 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. During any other time, call the hospital operator at 614-293-8000 to contact the on-call chaplain. For a list of places of worship located near the Medical Center, see pages 26 and 27 of this booklet.

Interpreter Services The Ohio State University Medical Center is committed to providing culturally and linguistically appropriate services for patients who have limited English proficiency, as well as those who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and/or have hearing and visual impairments. We want to ensure optimal communication between you and our staff to facilitate care. These services will be provided at no cost to you. Interpreters are available if you have limited English proficiency or are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Please let your caregiver know verbally, in writing or by pointing to our “I speak posters” to help identify your language. The Atrium is located on the fifth floor of Rhodes Hall. It is a waiting and information area for family members and visitors of patients who are in surgery or receiving other services. Guests can receive updates on the status of surgery patients from an Atrium Liaison or via OR Link, a computerized tracking system that shows when patients move from one area to another. Doctors and other medical personnel may also contact guests to provide updates while they are in the Atrium.

Vending machines are located throughout the Medical Center. They are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, offering snacks, beverages and entrees in larger areas. Skyward Concessions is an outdoor mobile food cart with two locations on the OSU Medical Center campus that offers hot sandwiches including gyros and bratwurst, chips, snacks and beverages. Parks The Oval Located on Ohio State’s campus, The Oval provides a peaceful location within walking distance of The Ohio State University Medical Center. To walk to the Oval, exit the Medical Center and walk East towards Neil Avenue. Make a left on Neil Avenue and walk towards the William Thomas Oxley Memorial Library. The Oval begins on the East side of the Library. Olentangy Trail If you would really like to stretch your legs, we have a great option for you. The Olentangy Trail is a paved biking and walking path that winds through several neighborhoods along the Olentangy River and travels through the heart of The Ohio State University campus. Trailheads are located at several major city parks, including Antrim Park and Whetstone Park. One of the most popular greenways in Ohio, this trail offers a seamless 13.75 mile route from Worthington Hills to downtown Columbus. Learn more and find a trail map at parks.columbus.gov. Antrim Park This park is a great choice if you would like to leave the Medical Center for some relaxation and is within a 10 minute drive. Take State Route 315 North and exit at Bethel Road.
