Banks’ Arbitrary Deductions And Charges tions and charges on every little service have become the order of the day. These deductions and charges are far from being favourable to consumers of banks’ services.

It’s an appalling situation no doubt! Many customers are dissatisfied with this development and on a visit to any bank you can see customers complaining about this ugly trend.

You can easily notice frustration on the faces of customers showing that these deductions and charges have become a burden that is becoming unbearable for

them especially in view of the general cash crunch in the land. The relationship that exits between the banks and their customers these days is that of pure exploitation which calls for much worry.

The conditions with which banks deal with customers now only favours the banks while it leaves the customers being exploited. ...continue on pg5

He made reference to how the BVN has been used effectively by the Federal Government, which has detected over 28,000 irregular payments and collections through criminal connivance of the administrators. Okanlawon added: “As a government, we

are always open to any innovation that will bring efficiency and transparency to governance. If this will help Osun further in its efforts to sanitise the payrolls, I am of the opinion that both government and workers will be

Foiled Robbery: Iwo Monarch Commends Osun Police

T

he Oluwo of Iwo, Oba AbdulRasheed Adewale Akanbi, has commended what he called the gallantry of men of the Nigeria Police Force, State of Osun Command, in thwarting armed robbers’ attempt to rob banks in Ikirun recently.

Oba Akanbi also lauded Governor Rauf Aregbesola for his foresight in considering security as the first major thing to put in place ahead of everything, adding that

if not for the adequate provisions that had been made for the police by the Aregbesola administration, the attempted robbery would have been successful.

The monarch made the commendation in a statement signed by the spokesperson for his palace, Prince Dauda Abimbola. According to him, without adequate security, investments, whether local or foreign, would remain a mirage. “There is no doubt that Osun is impregnable to criminals and this

The government had recently in a circular directed the workers in the state to submit the print out of their BVN, but the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Joint Negotiating Council (NJC) rejected the directive on the ground that labour unions were not consulted before the directive and saw

of drug education in the school curriculum in the state. Also speaking, Mrs Yetunde Ofoha, the Principal Staff Officer, Drug Demand Reduction Unit of the agency, said drug abuse by the youths has become a worrisome situation in the state. Ofoha said it was high time all major stakeholders in the state joined hands together to minimise the increase of drug abuse in the state. Ofoha said peer group pressure and ignorance are the major causes of drug abuse

among the youths. She therefore called for introduction of drug-free club and awareness programmes in schools. In his remarks, the Speaker, Honourable Najeem Salaam, said members would give their total support in eradicating the menace of drug in the state. He urged the agency to collaborate with other security agencies to minimise the menace. “It is very sad that our hope of tomorrow; our future, are the ones involved in drug abuse. “But we will do all

is commendable. This can easily be attributed to the foresight of Governor Aregbesola in considering security most paramount. I am aware of the state’s heavy investment in security equipment. “I am aware of about 25 highly-sophisticated Armoured Personnel Carriers which have been provided for the police, which are found on our roads in Osun. “I am also aware of the many patrol vans available for security agents. “Everywhere you go, there is a sense of security because you see highly-motivated men and women of the Nigerian Police. “What happened in our state on that fateful Friday was yet another test case of the preparedness of our security agencies to combat crime. “ W e m u s t congratulate the government for this and we must salute the gallantry of the officers, who showed confidence and prevented the men from their evil plot,” the Oluwo remarked. The prominent monarch however, urged government and the police not to relent, adding that criminals of today always employ new tactics to overwhelm their victims. He added: “I want to urge the government and the police to intensify efforts in the area of security. Our attempt to promote our culture through tourism will be a mirage if visitors feel unsafe. “I also urge residents of the state to be vigilant while cooperating with the law enforcement agencies in their efforts to make Osun uncomfortable for criminals.”

dissatisfaction amongst banks’ customers due to the exploitative posturings of our banks these days. This dissatisfaction has therefore attracted the intervention of a Non-governmental organisation; a consumer rights group by the name Consumers Advocacy Foundation Of Nigeria (CAFON) whose national president is Sola Salako. CAFON is a NGO established with the aim of protecting consumers rights in Nigeria and it has called for a one day protest against the exploitations by these banks. The group has declared March 1 which isnext week Tuesday as a ‘No Banking Day’. According to Sola Salako, the president of AFCON, banks cus-

tomers must seeMarch 1 as a day they will not do any business with these banks; they must stay away from going to the banks on that day and refuse to do any transactions - including the use of ATM - with the banks. Salako said this protest becomes necessary so as to call the attention of banking authorities in the country to this unacceptable situation. “After all, they cannot be in business if we don’t patronise them”. Salako retorted! She therefore called on every Nigerian consumer of banks’ services who also feels dissatisfied about all this arbitrary deductions and charges from these banks to join in the protest.

We do not agree less with the position of this group and we like to say categorically that we are in full support of this clarion call. For all over the world the banking industry exists to offer favourable services to customers but not to suffocate them with unnecessary charges and

deductions as we are witnessing in Nigeria today. The way things are going if the situation is not reversed people may be forced to withdraw their patronage of these banks; a situation that is dangerous for both the banks and the customers. Overall should such a situation arise it portends a dangerous signal for our economy as a nation.

proper upbringing and acceptable norms in our society. We are not beasts in this part of the world but the actions of these pupils prove the beast in them and to me, it is the product of their upbringing. It is high time parents reviewed their priorities and take

the training of their children as matter of utmost priority. No matter our quest for material possession, without proper upbringing of our children, who are leaders of tomorrow, such efforts are in futility. Teachers should not be completely saddled

with the responsibility of bringing up our children for us. When last did you visit your kids at school and ask how they are faring? Did you inspect their books and assess their performances? Do we pay detailed attention to the friends they choose and their

conversations at home and on phones? It is high time we stopped blaming the government for our lapses. G o v e r n m e n t magnanimity for paying our children’s examination fees should not be misconstrued. How can government pay examination fees of

Apart from the aforementioned, banks still charge for every little service to customers. This is an absolutely unfair situation which truly calls for protest. The banks cannot be using customers money to stay in business and still subject the customers to unfair and exploitative treatment. This is absolutely unacceptable! On this score we are therefore on the same page with CAFON on this ‘No Banking Day’ protest and we like to call on banks customers nationwide to key into this idea enmass. We must fight for our rights. For if we failed to do so no one will do it for us. Enough is enough to all this exploitations!nly

For the purpose of further enlightenment it may be necessary to mention some of these deductions and charges so as to have insight into the basis of the call for boycott of banks on March 1st as prescribed by CAFON; ATM withdrawal that was free before now attracts N65 on the third withdrawal, N100 for debit card issuance and renewal, N100 on every transfer by ATM, N105 for every online transfer, N105 as annual Debit Card Maintenance (DCM) fees, Stamp Duty Charge of N50 on every credit of over N1000 (just introduced). Journalism Must Become A Force For Good, By Bola Awolowo’s Letter To Odutola For £1,400 Loan Being an acceptance speech by the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, at the conferment of the Sun Man of the Year 2015 award on him, on February 20, 2016. ith this in mind, let me say I am honoured to have been picked as The Sun Man of the Year. The decision to give me this award I understand resulted from a thorough process reviewing the significant political developments that our country in the last quarter of a century has witnessed and particularly the monumental happenings in the past one. Time knows us all but opportunity is reticent and makes itself known to but a few. To be placed by the convergence of destiny and incident in a position to play a key role in bringing historic change to the politics of this nation is a gift that was given me by the supreme hand of Providence. 2. God in His wisdom placed me in the position to recognize the change that was needed and to help effectuate that change. I thank God for giving me this chance and for allowing me to be born a black man and a Nigerian. With this in mind, let me say I am honoured to have been picked as The Sun Man of the Year. The decision to give me this award I understand resulted from a thorough process reviewing the significant political developments that our country in the last quarter of a century has witnessed and particularly the monumental happenings in the past one. 3. I am humble enough to know that the Sun could have chosen any one of several figures. Their decision would not have been gainsaid. I think particularly of the man at the helm of affairs and who won the election, President Muhammadu Buhari. Yet, I am mindful enough to realize such awards do not come frequently and that I better grab the good thing given me. I thank The Sun Management for this validation and recognition of my modest efforts to help place our beloved land on the path of reformation, progress and hope. 4. What was accomplished in 2015 was not a singular effort. It was done through the collective love and labor of millions of Nigerians. A handful of them were well known. Most of them are hardworking anonymous people who together constitute the backbone and great strength of this nation. It was this collective effort that produced the unprecedented electoral victory in 2015. 5. Therefore, I accept this award on behalf of all the people who contributed to opening a vitally new chapter in the book of our national history. Many sacrificed greatly to achieve this great turn of events. Some practically surrendered their businesses. Some provided funds. Especially that elderly 90-year old woman, Hajia Fadimatu Mai Talle Tara who donated 1 million Naira, her life savings for the campaign of President Muhammadu W

Chief Odutola refused the loan request and Awo could not travel that year. By August 14, 1944, he travelled to England, became a Barrister at law and was called to the Bar in November 1946. Amazingly, by 1954 (A year to the time he promised to pay Chief Odutola the Loan) , Chief Awolowo was already a Premier in the Defunct Western Region and already •Late Chief Awolowo •Late Chief odutola giving out Scholarship to As you are aware, I have just absolutely NOTHING in the whole over 200 undergraduates. passed the intermediate Bachelor transaction ,except the satisfaction THE LETTER

Dear Mr. Odutola, think it will be an exceeding saving of time and more business-like if I avoid all sweet preliminaries and go straight into the object of this letter and say that I am writing to ask you to be good enough to lend me a sum of £1,400 (One thousand and four hundred pounds) free of interest for twelve years. It is a staggering figure! More staggering indeed does it become, when it is realized that I, who am asking for this loan, have nothing in all the world to give as a security for this money, excepting my good faith and my brains which again are of value only so long as I continue to breathe the breath of life! Nevertheless, I here proceed to outline in brief why i want this big loan from you. And I hope you will be kind enough to sacrifice some time to go through what I have to say, even though , in the end you might find yourself unable to do me this grand favour. One great ambition of mine since my boyhood days is to be a lawyer, a politician and a journalist, rolled into one. I cherish politics and journalism as a career. ; and I desire advocacy as a means of livelihood. For you will agree with me that a politician or journalist who has no money with which to support himself and family comfortably ,is like a blade which has no razor. Now, at one time, I was on the verge of making enough money with which I could proceed to England in order to pursue the object of my ambition; but I suffered a twist in my fortune, and I crashed. Ever since, I have tried without success to recover lost grounds, financially. But spiritually and intellectually, I have made appreciable advance in spite of towering difficulties, all of which have now been surmounted.

Buhari . (May Her Soul Rest in Peace). Others worked ceaselessly, hour after hour, day after day until the historic job was done. Many hit the campaign trail day and night from Katsina to Lagos. I reserve a special recognition and commendation for the Youth across this nation who formed part of the foot soldiers in the struggle for change. It is to these heroes that I dedicate this award. 6. We have come to a point where there is no turning back for there is nothing worthy of the sacrifices so recently made to turn back to. e have reached the juncture at W which we must reform our institutions, rid our country of corruption or admit that we have mortgaged away the good future due us. The infrastructural decay of past decades, the unemployment time bomb, the challenging security situation make a compelling case for us all to join with this government embrace a new politics that will help build a new country. 7. The media is a key partner in this regard. The Sun and other media organizations must employ journalism as a tool for development.

Journalism must become a force for good and a voice against injustice, poverty and discrimination. It must always speak right to might. You must be objective. You must not be a partner to power or to those who have lost power. Your role is that of guardian and herald of the truth for the people themselves. 8. Do that and you will shine in a way that will make the name of this newspaper more than apt? The media will stand the best of time and with other patriots work to make Nigeria great again. 9. To my fellow Nigerians, the Constitution to which we all subscribe to as ‘We the People” must be used to re-build our country, revitalize our economy and ultimately protect and empower our people. Our renaissance must come from within through perseverance, strong determination and an irrevocable sense of patriotism. Nigeria is going through a challenging period and truly we must build our tomorrow todaytogether. Thank and may God bless you all.

of Commerce Examination. Next year, I am taking the final B.Com. Having a degree is not my goal; I hate to be a government or mercantile employee. Otherwise, there are opportunities for me here and there to get a suitable and well paid job under government or one of the mercantile houses. As you know, however, once I become an employee of government or a mercantile establishment that is the end to my career as a politician and journalist. I have therefore resolved that under no circumstances will I take up such employment. That is just by the way. I am now thirty-four years of age. After careful thought, I have come to the conclusion that if I could raise a loan free of interest sufficient to cover expenses , I should go to England , this year and within three years, I should qualify as a Barrister –at –law, and also obtain with Honours the LL.B Degree of London University. In addition this degrees apart from giving me good backing as a solicitor and Advocate will help me immensely as a politician and journalist. But where on earth could i get the money? Who in Nigeria today could give £1400 free of interest to help his fellow-man? J.Henry Doherty, Esq., of illustrious memory who did the like to many successful Nigerians is no more. But after meticulous, shifting and weighing, I hit upon you. I have no doubt whatsoever in my mind that out of the bounty with which providence blesses your grit and efforts as a businessman, you can well easily afford to advance such a sum of money. I have no doubt too that as a young and progressive man you will be quite happy to give the money for the pursuit of the project for which I desire it. But then, could you take this risk? That is the question. As I have said before, I have no security for this loan. Moreover, I want it free of interest. So that you stand to gain

that by helping me to achieve my ambition you are indirectly or even directly helping Nigeria or even Africa. his risk becomes greater when it is borne in mind that I might die in the course of my studies or immediately after , so that, since I have no security or surety, you stand the chance of losing not only the money but also the satisfaction which you may cherish that you are contributing to the uplift of Africa. It is indeed a great risk; the greatest any man ever embarks upon. But, this is a big BUT, if I live, as I have no doubt I will do, you will not only get your money back in full, but you will , to the end of your days , have cause to rejoice that you have done one of the most outstanding and most philanthropic acts any human being ever does. Among other things, I shall make excellent use of the money while in England by breaking records in my examination. On my return to Nigeria, I shall strive to be one of the foremost advocates, politicians and writers in West Africa, and while I do all these, I shall make it a point not only to pay your money back in full, but also to repay your kindness and generosity towards me in every way I can. All the same, it is a big risk! So , Sir, I like you to think seriously about it, and see if you can take it in the interest of a young man who has brains ,industry and determination to back his ambition , but lacks the money. I know we have never been close friends, but I have a shrewd idea that you may take the risk and help me. On this assumption, therefore, I proceed to the next and last stage of this letter. I shall not require the whole £1,400 in a lump sum. To start with, you will help me pay a sum of £208-13s-3d to the Inner Temple. I have already received an application form from this Inn of Court; and from the details

T

forwarded, I gather that the sum of £208-13s-3d will cover all the cost of training as a Barrister, examination fees excluded. When I am ready to sail, you will advance me a sum of £100 to cover passage, provision for my family and any other incidental expenses( NOTE: If i got torpedoed on the way, you would certainly lose this £100 but you will recover the £208-13s-3d). t the same time you will remit to a London Bank the sum of £491-6s-9d. It is out of this amount that I shall pay the university fees for LL.B course a, and for special courses in political science and journalism, when I land in England. This is to say, the initial advance will total £800. At the end of the first year, provided I make satisfactory progress in my studies, you will give instruction to the bank to honour all cheques from me drawn on this account. There will be an arrangement to be signed by me on my return. On my return, I shall require TWO years within which to establish a solid practice and build a good reputation. After these two years, I should commence to pay at least £200 per annum either in monthly, quarterly or annual payments. So that in seven years after the first two years, I should pay back the whole sum of £1,400. That will be TWELVE YEARS from the time you help me to pay this in April or so this year, then I should be due to pay the whole of £1400 by April 1955. Now, as you yourself will see, this is the farthest limit within which I can pay the money. It may be possible for me to pay the money within THREE to FIVE years of my return. As a matter of fact, the sooner I pay it off, the better. But it is much better to be on the safe side in a matter like this. It is no making promises now which will be difficult to fulfil in future. On the contrary it is better to mention a period of twelve years and pay within SIX or EIGHT years than to mention FIVE YEARS and fail to pay within TEN years. Personally, I prefer that I should fail to get the loan under theses unattractive but sure conditions, rather than succeed in getting it under attractive but precarious conditions. Now, this is all I have to say. You have my request before you, and the reason why i make the request. It is left to you to decide whether it is worthwhile to take the risk of helping me in the manner outlined above or not. If you do me the great favour, not only myself and all that are mine, but also God and Africa will be grateful, I shall have no cause whatsoever to grumble or to blame you, FOR THE RISK IS GREAT. Since this is a very selfish request, I enclose herewith a stamped addressed envelope for a reply to be sent to me under registered cover. With very kind regards. Yours sincerely,

Why Iragbiji And Hills Are Siamese Twins - Aragbiji

T

he Aragbiji of Iragbiji, Oba Abdul Rasheed Olabomi ascended the throne in May 27, 2008 after a meritorious service as a civil servant. In an interview with TUNDE BUSARI, he speaks on his experience on the throne. Excerpts:

Kabiyesi, how has it been in the past eight years in the palace? What is most important here is to give thanks to God for seeing me thus far. No one else deserves the appreciation than God who has made it possible to rise to this position and win the confidence of the people. Being a traditional ruler is more than what you think. It is not like mounting a rostrum and campaign for vote to rule for the maximum of eight year. This is a lifelong covenant with your people all of whom see you as their father and to whom they must run when occasion requires. We are closer to the grassroots than the government. So, you should guess the kind of complexities one deals with on a daily basis. But I must be fair to thank God for the wisdom and courage. He gives me from time to time to handle situations as they come. How did Iragbiji come to being? Iragbiji was founded over 600 years ago by Sokungbade who was a hunter. During game he chased an antelope to the top of Oke Iragbiji hill. The antelope ran into a hole and Sokungbade pursued it and brought it out. Both eventually emerged at the front of the palace. Our Ori Oke festival has its root in this memorable incident. There is a stream on top of the hill known as Ayeye stream. It is medicinal and a cure for barreness and diseases. During the time of the unfortunate outbreak of small pox some hundred years ago, it was the water that was used to cure the ailment. There are a lot of things with which God endowed us in this part of the world before the advent of the white people. That is why those heritages survive till date. It can safely be said, based on the history, that Iragbiji and hills are inseparable. You can see our peculiar landscape on which sit big rocks. Our panegyric is even derived from this natural endowment. Iragbiji oloke meji tako tabo. Ori Oke festival is one of your cultural heritages in Iragbiji, how significant is the festival today? Apart from Muslim and Christian festivals, Ori-Oke festival is the one that pulls large crowd to the town. Its significance cannot be ignored in the spiritual development of Iragbiji. The festival holds annually in June to mark a new yam season. We don’t eat yam until the festival holds. I can tell you that it is pulling more crowd now. Osun State government officials witnessed the last edition and were impressed with what they saw. There is also Egungun festival which also attracts my sons and daughters living outside to come home. But you are a Muslim and former Secretary General of Osun State Muslim Community, are your roles as a Muslim and custodian of tradition not conflicting? The roles are not conflicting because there is a way to balance them. 90 percent of Iragbiji population is Muslim. But this does not say we should abandon our culture and tradition. It is never done. As a traditional ruler and custodian of custom, I am duty bound to do it as it is so that it will give us the desired result. My duty as the traditional ruler is very clear. So also is my duty as a Muslim. Being a Muslim is personal to me because Islam is not the official religion of Iragbiji. Yet we are enjoying peaceful coexistence among all faiths. None disturbs the other. I can even tell you that the roles I play among religious leaders are complementary. Oba has administrative responsibility to ensure his town is well administered. Part of the things we administer are the cultural festivals. It is my duty to ensure all go well. Oba is father to all religions. I host Christian leaders here in the palace during

•The Aragbiji

their festival. Christians organise carol here. At the same time, I recognise and pay attention to traditional worshippers like Ifa devotees, Oya, Obatala, Osun, Sonpona and others. No Oba should discriminate against any of the religions. If he does, he must prepare for the consequence. We cannot afford to throw away what belongs to our forefathers. Even when Prophet Muhammed arrived Medina, he met non-Muslims yet they co-habited in peace. This was one of the factors that attracted Islam to some of the non-Muslims to willingly convert to Islam. We should also bear it in mind that Nigeria is a secular state. This gives enough room to co-existence among all faiths. Can you update us on the state of the Iragbiji museum project? The truth is that the museum is capital intensive. Since I ascended the throne, it had been my vision to have a befitting museum inside which historical materials of Iragbiji would be preserved and showcased to tourists. So far, I have personally made some efforts in that direction by collecting relevant items and keeping them in the museum, inside the palace. I am trying all means possible to create a system whereby some lost artifacts are recovered. It is a community development project. Unfortunately, hardly can we find private developers to come and support us. It is a project even government needs to come forward and fund. I made effort to bring in National Museum and Monument Commission. The curator in Osun State here advised me to reach out to their headquarters. Unfortunately, they could not make it. I had thought the commission would have visited and seen what we had on ground. I realised if we are not careful, those artifacts that remind us where we are coming from would disappear into oblivion. But with my effort, we have some collections of artifacts including items used in

the past. I collected old lantern, what we called gas lamp, old photography components, home appliances, and ornaments like bangles. This museum is the only one in Osun State and one of the few in Nigeria solely set up by a traditional ruler. A good number of visitors and tourists had come to town and seen what we have there. I think the objective is being achieved gradually. But I will be happier if government can come in and upgrade it. This is an era when oil price is crashing; we need to look elsewhere to generate revenue. One of the areas is tourism if government is ready to explore it as it is down in some countries which make good money from tourism every year. It is sad that I have 21 tourist sites but none of them is developed by the government. You were in the US last year, can you share your experience and mission there? My sons and daughters resident in America invited me to the US in the past four years. I had to honour them last year and it was a beautiful experience. It was memorable being in their midst. It was joy and indeed a pride to be together with one’s children in foreign land. The trip afforded us the opportunity to reunite. Others who are resident in Canada also joined us and we all had an interesting gathering. There was a dinner in my honour at Maryland. I used the occasion to confer chieftaincy titles on Adeniyi Sobalaje for his wonderful contributions. He is now Otunba Fiwagboye. His wife is conferred with Yeye Fiwagboye. Also, I conferred Otunba Mayegun on Muyiwa Jayeola and his wife, Yeye Mayegun. In short, the 17 days I spent in the US were very exciting. It was fulfilling visiting them and they were all happy too. •Culled from The Tribune

A Word For President Buhari By abiodun komo-

or those who care to know, I am a passionate supporter of the Muhammadu Buhari cause and that position is not about to change! As a matter of fact, my preference in the March 28, 2015 presidential election through which Buhari eventually became Nigeria’s first opposition candidate ever to defeat an incumbent president, was a product of my convictions and until I have sufficient reasons to change course, my preference remains on course. Be that as it may, surprise will be the appropriate word, should I fail to make the list of the ‘Cult of Wailing Wailers’ as a result of this piece, which I believe is in the overall interest of my country. F

Whichever way the pendulum swings, the good news is that, within a very short time in office, Buhari has, to a great extent, succeeded in rescuing Nigeria from the jaws of a predatory elite and a band of merit-devalued interlopers, who have for close to two decades, deprived Nigeria of her gold and silver. However, this is not to say that I envy the President, not even with the scourge of impunity that has turned Nigeria into a morass of incensed screeches, where priorities are misplaced with unimaginable perfidy and, responsibilities, shifted with unrivaled pomposity. Like the biblical ten plagues, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) passed through our land and all we could feel were pinches of hypocrisy and pains of stagnation. Its bunch of yo-yos insulted our collective intelligence with unimaginable artificiality and its crop of educatedbut-politically-incompetent hands, “celestially” endowed to take care of the downtrodden, only used their “celestial weapons” to mortgage our commonwealth. And, as if the gods were angry, meanness replaced magnificence; and in place of conviction, we had deception. Buhari’s victory at the poll was no doubt a great opportunity to reposition the ruling All Progressives Party (APC), as a party of principle. It is also an opportunity for the progressive class to truly rediscover itself before the next general elections, especially, if the ruling party must retain its relevance in the consciousness of Nigerians. As things stand, there are folks out there in whose eyes the only difference between the badlydegraded PDP and the victorious APC is Buhari. Well, maybe one or two other genuine hearts here and there. But they are as scarce as hen’s teeth! Added to this is the opposition’s reported huge investment in a mass of experts in

the spread of hate messages against the President but, from the look of things, it is as if the president’s strategists and publicists have forgotten that lies, when told too often, have the capacity to carouse the exigencies of truth. In my candid opinion, this is unhealthy for the party that wants to move beyond where it currently holds sway to the upper realm!

Needless to repeat that the President’s efforts at recovering part of Nigeria’s stolen loots is already yielding fruits. Nonetheless, concerted efforts should be made towards preventing the anticorruption war from being a temporary reprieve. This is why, apart from building it around structures, not men, Buhari must also endeavour to reform a ziggingzagging judiciary that is at the moment misconstruing the people’s tall level of tolerance for short memory. He must strive to put in place workable structures that will prevent our monies from being indescribably stolen and indiscriminately stashed abroad. At least for once in the affairs of this great country, our destiny as a people created by God should stop being in the hands of Pharisees, who value passion of power above logic of reason and Princes of Sodom, who cry even when they don’t have tears.

Goodluck Jonathan’s administration journey to the Golgotha is still in Buhari’s government, almost a year after, doing new things the old way and it’s as if the President is comfortable with their services. On the other hand, those ‘Change Agents’ who committed so much in terms of human and material resources into making the Buhari dream a reality have for close to a year been waiting in the wings to contribute their quota to the development of the polity or, as the case may be, replenish their barns. Indeed, this is where the President has to proactively rise to the occasion in order to avoid any possible backlash, which may be unpleasant to the ruling party and counterproductive to the country. Ernest Benn describes politics as “the art of looking for trouble, finding it whether it exists or not, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedy.” But what is so special in progressive politics that politicians always find a place of refuge in it? Even in its “comfortable and ill-defined” state, how does a progressive party manage its successes, as well as prevent abuse of power in politics and government? And, with our kind of politics and the attitude of politicians in this clime, is any politician worth dying for? As a • KOMOLAFE writes in from Ijebu-Jesa, State of Osun,

Our Elders Are Culpable

No country can develop without education. With education and training in human capital development, the country can excel to any level. Nigeria is undoubtedly endowed with human resources that can move the country forward, but whether we chose to go to a football contest with our First Eleven team is a matter of debate. Serving in government, rather than being an opportunity to offer selfless service, has become an opportunity to enrich and aggrandize oneself. Available opportunities in government, which should spread to people, is now centered around family, friends and generations yet unborn.

It must, however, be stated clearly that whereas the imperialist leaders came here for their own good, they were able to entrench certain good things, which our people enjoyed.

Our leaders also speak with nostalgia how things were good immediately after independence with little resources. Today, even in abundance, majority of the people are suffering.

Scholarships were awarded to brilliant but indigent students; employments were offered/to graduates; overseas training were made available for those who needed them but with the advent of our own men at the helm of affairs, things changed.

Election into public office is now akin to rat-race, where everybody is doing everything to ensure he wins. In our milieu, everything the leader does is right, regardless of what the law says. Corruption is so massive and pervasive that all the national revenues that ought to have been deployed into public good ended up in private pockets.

Most of our leaders attended public schools, which was the order the day, yet, they could compete favourably with their counterparts from any part of the world. Public institutions like schools, and hospitals were furnished to the ability of the government but in the best interest of the society. Wi t h n e p o t i s m a n d s e l f centeredness, all altruistic virtues vanished. Today, public officials do not have deep interest in the system they superintend over; their only interest is to exploit it. Our public school teachers keep their children in private schools, what an irony? For political office holders, the best way to educate their children is to send them abroad to school in the most expensive schools around.

of the functions performed by our teaching hospitals are not more than what the general hospitals are offering.
