Ongoing WASCE: Osun Vows To Punish Whoever Attempts To Disrupt Exams By Ismaeel uthman he government of the State of Osun has vowed to use established laws to deal with any person(s) or student who attempts to disrupt or caught disrupting the conduct of the ongoing West African School Certificate Examinations (WASCE) across all the schools in the state. Permanent Secretary, Science and Technology, Ministry of Education, Mr Festus Olajide, said

T

that there was intelligence report that some Grade 12 students, who failed to meet up with four credit passes required in the mock examination conducted to qualify for free government WAEC registration were planning to disrupt the

ongoing WASCE. According to Olajide in a press statement made available to OSUN DEFENDER on Thursday, security agencies have been informed on the development; and all schools, where WAEC

Exam is taking place in the state have also been placed on surveillance by security agencies. Olajide warned the students planning to disrupt the exam to desist from carrying out such plan, saying that apart from the fact that they could not succeed, they would be severely dealt with as they would be caught. The Permanent Secretary maintained that the administration of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola is committed to its policy of enhancing communal

peace and progress, and promotion of functional education, being part of the Six Point Integral Action Plan. He also charged parents and guardians to call their children and wards to order against engaging in any act capable of breaching public peace and bringing disrepute to their families, noting that the existing practice of virtues for which the state is known for should not be allowed to be compromised.

youth emancipation”, adding “that is the reason why it is devoid of fanfare. It is mainly a private visit”. During the visit, the Ooni’s train which arrived Modakeke at 5.20 pm was received at Lagere with a shout of ‘O ti sese’ meaning, (It has now being made possible) from youths of both IleIfe and Modakeke as the foremost monarch was received by Oba Festus Adedoyin, Olaogbin 11, the leadership of Modakeke Progressive Union (MPU) and other dignitaries who headed straight to the Ogunsua’s Palace. Addressing the enthusiastic and jubilant crowd, the Ooni said the purpose of his visit to Modakeke was to reiterate his commitment to the development of the entire Yorubaland and Ifeland in particular. Oba Ogunwusi recalled, that prior to his coronation, he had donated transformers to the Modakeke community as well as Ile-Ife as both communities have challenges of epileptic power supply which had inhibited the economic development of the areas. He also reminded the youths of Modakeke that

with the cooperation of the leaderships in the communities, a data bank of unemployed youths as well as widows that are affected by the past communal clash between the two communities had been compiled and efforts were being made for industrialization of the areas, with a view to providing jobs for the teeming unemployed youths in both communities. Oba Ogunwusi therefore, urged the youths to use their cutlasses for farming and food production rather than using same to inflict wounds on anyone at the command of unpatriotic elements in both communities. He tasked the youths on positive contributions in their communities in particular and the nation at large, as he encouraged them to take to farming as Ife and Modakeke are agrarian communities endowed with fertile soil. The monarch urged them to eschew bitterness and malice as he promised that hostility between Modakeke and Ife was over and it requires the cooperation of all and sundry to chat a new course.

In his response, the Ogunsua, Oba Adedoyin, said he appreciated the visit of the Ooni to Modakeke which he called “a new era”. Oba Adedoyin described the visit of the Ooni on a Wednesday as being significant as he (the Ogunsua) was crowned on a Wednesday, just as the Ooni’s second in command, the Obalufe, was also crowned the same day of the week while the peace parley’s visit to Modakeke took place on a Wednesday. The monarch described the Ooni as an apostle of peace, humility and humanity which are traits of a good leader and father. He therefore, pledged the unflinching support of the entire Modakeke people in his quest for a long lasting peace and the development of both communities as a whole but solicited the support of the Ooni to actualise the growth of Modakeke. The climax of the visit was a brief private discussion between the royal fathers and the leaderships of both communities.

intervention of a man of great political sagacity in the Asiwaju. Had the same much needed comprise been obtained much earlier the story of our country would have been different and better. This is because Nigeria unlike countries such as India, Ghana and the Republic of South Africa never had a natural “party of independence”. In the absence of one, a vehicle had to be built to achieve a new national governing majority

Asiwaju at 64

For his examplary persistence in helping to create this new national majority we give the Asiwaju great Kudos. For the alternative could have imploded the Republic. The continuation of the ancient regime under the PDP would certainly have bankrupted the nation, for what we are hearing from Dasuki and other ‘Gates’ constitute only the tip of a sordid iceberg. What is clearly more dangerous is that the ‘re-election’ of Jonathan, given the fragile

nature of our nascent democracy would probably have triggered of a Nasser type ‘free (junior) offices coup’. Before this Asiwaju had put in a stellar performance as the governor of Lagos State. Here he put in a stellar performance by weaning the state of dependence on an overbearing and suffocating federal government. This was done at a time when the then federal government had virtually declared war on the state. By building up the internal resources of the state he built up the internal

resilience to withstand the federal onslaught. This template is now being modified in other states as the only means of survival particularly in this difficult economic downturn. Once again Kudos to the innovative managerial sagacity of Asiwaju Tinubu. In view of Asiwaju’s positive contribution to our political development so far, it’s instructive to mention it before we conclude this piece that his appearance on the Nigerian political landscape has been a big blessing not only

Nigeria as a nation but to the entire black continent as his tentacles have also spread to a few African countries where he has made some remarkable political impact also. There are of course still many more miles to go and through all of the twists and turns the cerebral input of this great man will always be needed. We therefore thank him for times past and the good work done as we wish him many more fulfilling and happy decades ahead in the service of the fatherland.

Saraki’s Warhorse Kickstarts Survival Battle (1) Benefits Of Cashew And It Seed

“Politics is more dangerous than war, for in war you are only killed once,”- Winston Churchill. odern d a y A f r i c a n politicians are special species; majority of them are funny lot. Some are ignoramuses and some are incurable utopians, but one thing that appears to be general phenomenon is self-centredness. Unlike in the early days of African independence struggle, where African leaders were ideologues, because they were passionate about the well-being of their people, in a situation where people like Sekeou Toure of Guinea would champion socialism for his country with the people at the centre of his manifestoes; Julius Nyerere would seek African socialism as an attitude in Tanzania; Kwame Nkrumah would demand intellectual activism and socialism for Ghana and African, and our own Obafemi Awolowo would canvass for socialism with parliamentary democracy, just to define how and who to govern, the modern day politicians are controlled by their egocentrism of negative value-me, myself and I. I read in the newspapers an interview granted by one politician from Kwara State, Mr. Kawu Baraje, who happened to be the former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), now a chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) and one of the political boys of the embattled Senate President Bukola Saraki, where he predicted doom for his party, because the interest of his paymaster is being threatened by the anti-corruption drive of President Buhari as touching Saraki’s trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal and I laughed out at his fallacies and old logic. For those who have not read the interview, let me just point out three points from Baraje’s gibberish and affirm his claim that APC is floundering, because the President is being distracted by his aides; that the party and the President stand aloof in the trial of the embattled Senate President for corruption at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, making Saraki to be facing justice without influence; that the trial is designed to remove Saraki from Senate Presidency, because some party chiefs were not happy with the way he emerged as number three citizen cum Chairman of the National Assembly. Therefore, APC would break like they did to the decimated PDP and new stronger party would emerge. Those who are thinking with their anus would go along with the possible worlds created by Baraje, while any level-headed person knows that the same tactics cannot be used to win election twice. I would have been convinced by the poor man’s argument, had it been that he detached emotion from his points, but his desperation is understood, and I would not fall into the error of argumentum ad hominem by attacking his personality. I chose to write this piece, because I voted for President Buhari, not as

B

esides, if Buhari can fix the naira value, just the way he sought out the currency deal with China, and use the Yuan to fight dollar dominance in the country, and the commoners regain their purchasing power, and the machinery to develop agriculture is imported, and the new factory from textile to car assemblies spring up, jobs would be created in millions and the people would be happy; if Buhari can chase Boko Haram out the country and annihilate the terrorists, and make the country safe and secure just the way it is happening now in the North East, then there would be no vacancy in Aso Rock in 2019. Otherwise, his party will kiss the dust. Meanwhile, Buhari seems to be reading Awolowo’s mental magnitude that touches on discipline of mind on the part of leadership, because the President has made enough trips, and I have not seen him journey with his beautiful wife, suggesting that toiling for the nation matters to him than fun trip, where the wife would disembark from the Presidential aircraft before the President. Suffice to say that the world takes this President serious. t is very difficult to have a man like Buhari, a Muslim Fulani, who sticks with one wife, with no scandal or corruption profile, who had been the governor, Petroleum Minister, Chairman, Petroleum Trust Fund, Head of State without commensurate wealth. So, I pray he succeeds and there are indicators that he would succeed, and that this nation would be happier for it, because if he fails, Nigeria is doomed. Where are the honest people again? Dasukigate revealed the real identities of the so-called leaders of the nation. If Baraje likes, let him go back to his bag of tricks and unleash the known antics of breaking the APC, we are no longer bothered, because the difference between the PDP and the APC is located in the difference between the six and half of a dozen. All we want is for Buhari to deliver. After all, President Obama, the most successful President in United States, came on the slogan of ‘change’ and won his second term on the mantra of “forward” despite the fact that Republican (opposition) torpedoed his party, Democrats at the Congress. So, for Baraje to ascribe PDP’s winning of rerun election in some southern states to what is coming is fallacious and illogical, and at best, the reflection of a frustrated old horse.

I •Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki. By goke butika

an APC member, but because he was the only credible alternative to former President Goodluck Jonathan, whose administration was hijacked by the wicked looters and unscrupulous politicians, who succeeded in dragging the country backward for 50 years. So, I affirm my locus for speaking on the matter affecting his presidency. n the first place, Baraje has forgotten that what attracted Nigerians to Buhari in his fourth attempt was his anti-corruption status, and his handlers deployed his sterling anti-graft posture as a campaign tool. More so, the people recognized that corruption was on its four when Jonathan was ruling, and that the nation was becoming pariah. So, for Baraje to think that the neutrality of President Buhari would spell doom for his party in the next election is false, because people are keenly following the trial, and they want to test the will of the President, and if he is seen interfering with the trial, his anti-corruption fight would be deflated and useless. So, Baraje’s first and second premises are false. Furthermore, Baraje failed to understand that Buhari did not win because a new PDP was formed and broke away from the old PDP, the President won, because the “talakawas” of the North and South West identified with the man because of his spartan lifestyle and his unblemished integrity, despite the fact that he had served in all strategic positions the nation could offer, including being Head of State and for the fact that Professor Attahiru Jega, the man of history, made the

I

votes count (a feat that must be credited to Jonathan). Fact sheet had it that the last election would still have been won by Buhari without the help of any big PDP chief in the North, but the input of the South Western elite was obvious anyway. So, for Baraje to claim that another party would emerge from APC like the then new PDP and shoot down Buhari suggests an inductive leap. Now, what could make Buhari presidency to kiss the dust? It is certain that the President is concerned and is working round the clock to fix the mess this nation was put into, but the struggle of the old order with the new Sheriff has brought untold pain unto the masses. So, people are justifiably shouting under heavy pressure; economic topsy-turvy, epileptic power supply, paralysis of critical sectors, skyrocketing inflation, fuel scarcity, infrastructure decay and terrible hunger. Hence, Baraje thought this crisis brewed because the President chose not to save Saraki. What a fallacy! If Buhari delivers on his campaign promises by deploying maximum force against the pipeline vandals and the gas flow freely to our turbines, and power is fixed, jobs at formal and informal sectors would be created in millions, and people would be happy; if Buhari deploys funds to capital projects and turn the entire nation into a construction site, jobs would be created in thousands and there would be development along the affected corridors, and people would be happy.

F

ruits are very important in humans daily consumption, which gives them the required needed vitamins and minerals, which are needed by the body to function effectively. Fruits vary from seasons, shapes, available vitamins and names. But cashew is not just a fruit but a food fruit, because it severs the two functions. Delicately sweet, yet crunchy and delicious, Cashew nut is packed with energy, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins that are essential for robust health. Cashew, or “caju” in Portuguese, is one of the popular ingredients in sweet, as well savory dishes worldwide. Botanically, cashew is an average-sized tropical evergreen tree belonging to the Anacardiaceae family, in the genus: Anacardium. Scientific name: Anacardium occidentale. The cashew tree is native to Brazil’s Amazon rain forest. It spreads all over the planet by Portuguese explorers and today, it is cultivated at commercial scale in Brazil, Vietnam, India and in many African countries. Cashew tree bears numerous, edible, pear shaped false fruits or “accessory fruits’” called “cashew apples.” Cashew nut, which actually is a “true-fruit”, firmly attaching to bottom end of cashew-apple, appearing like a clapper in the bell. Botanically, this tiny, bean shaped, grey “true fruit” is a drupe, featuring hard outer shell enclosing a single edible kernel known commercially as “cashew nut.” Its exterior shell composes a phenolic resin, urushiol, which is a potent caustic skin irritant toxin. In the processing units, this outer shell is roasted under high flame in order to destroy urushiol resin, and only then underlying edible cashew kernel is extracted. So, Cashew nut measures about an inch in length, 1/2 inches in diameter, and kidney or bean shape, with smooth curvy pointed tip. Each nut splits into two equal halves as in legumes. Cashews features ream white color with the firm, yet delicate texture and smooth surface. Health benefits of Cashew nuts: Cashews are high in calories. 100g of nuts provide 553 calories. They are packed with soluble dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals and numerous health-promoting phyto-chemicals that help protect from diseases and cancers. They are rich in “heart-friendly” monounsaturated-fatty acids like oleic, and palmitoleic acids. These essential fatty acids help lower harmful LDL-cholesterol, while increasing good HDL cholesterol in the blood. Research studies suggest that Mediterranean diet, which is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids help to prevent coronary artery disease and strokes by favoring healthy blood lipid profile. Cashew nuts are abundant sources of essential minerals. Minerals, especially manganese, potassium, copper, iron, magnesium, zinc, and selenium are concentrated in these nuts. A handful of cashew nuts a day in the diet would provide enough of these minerals and may help prevent deficiency diseases. Selenium is an important micronutrient, which functions as a co-factor for antioxidant enzymes such as Glutathione peroxidases, one of the most powerful antioxidants in the body. Copper is acofactor for many vital enzymes, including cytochrome c-oxidase and superoxide dismutase (other minerals function as co-factors for this enzyme are manganese and zinc). Zinc is a co-factor for many enzymes that regulate growth and development, gonadal function, digestion, and DNA (nucleic acid) synthesis. Cashews are also good in many essential vitamins such as pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), pyridoxine (vitamin B-6), riboflavin, and thiamin (vitamin B-1). 100g nuts provide 0.147 mg or 32% of daily-recommended levels of pyridoxine. Pyridoxine reduces the risk of homocystinuria, and sideroblastic anemia. Niacin helps prevent “pellagra” or dermatitis. Additionally, these vitamins are essential for metabolism of protein, fat, and carbohydrates at the cellular level. Further, the nuts also hold a small amount of zea-xanthin, an important pigment

flavonoid antioxidant, which selectively

absorbed into the retinal macula lutea in the eyes. It is thought to provide antioxidant and protective UV ray filtering functions and helps prevent age- related macular degeneration (ARMD) in the elderly. Selection and storage Cashew nuts can be available in the market year round. In the stores, only shelled cashew kernels are sold since the shell contains phenolic resin, urushiol, which is a potent skin irritant toxin. In the stores, one can find raw, salted, sweetened or candied cashews. Buy shelled nuts that feature bright cream-white, compact, uniform and feel heavy in hand. They should be free from cracks, mold, and spots and free of rancid smell. At home, store cashew kernels inside an airtight container and keep in the refrigerator in order to avoid them turn rancid. Under ideal conditions, fresh nuts should last for 5-6 months. Culinary uses Cashews have crunchy, buttery texture with a pleasant sweet fruity aroma. Here are some serving tips: Cashew nut fried rice with brussel sprouts and tomato. It can be enjoyed as a snack as they are. They can also be eaten salted or sweetened. They are nutty, yet pleasantly sweet in taste. They can be relished as a garnish in various kinds of sweets and desserts. Cashews, along with almonds and other dry fruits, are being used in savory rice dishes hyderbadi-biriyani , rice-pulao... etc, and in curry (kaaju-shahi-paneer) preparations in Indian, Persian, Pakistani, and Middle-Eastern regions. Split or crushed cashew along with almonds, pistachio is often sprinkled over desserts, particularly sundaes, and other confectionary to enhance flavor. The nuts are widely employed in the confectionery, as an addition to biscuits, sweets and cakes. “Cashew apples” are among popular fruits; eaten on their own in many regions around the world. They are also being used to prepare healthy drinks. Cashew nut allergy is a common hypersensitivity condition in some individuals, especially in the children. The reaction symptoms may range from simple skin itching (hives) to severe form of anaphylactic manifestations, including breathing difficulty, abdomen pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. The allergic manifestations are due to chemical compound anacardic acid (urushiol) that is present in cashew apples, shells, and

nuts. Cross-reactions may also occur with

some other nuts and fruits of Anacardiaceae family such as mango, pistachio, etc. Individuals with known allergic reactions to cashew nut and fruit may observe caution while eating them. Health Benefits of the Cashew Nut: Prevention of Cancer: Proanthocyanidins are a class of flavonols, which fight against tumor cells by stopping them to divide further. These proanthocyanidins and high copper content in cashew nuts help fight against cancerous cells and keeps you away from colon cancer. This is one of the major cashew nut benefits. Healthy Heart: Cashews contain low fat content when compared to other nuts and that too in the oleic acid form, which is very healthy for heart. They are cholesterol-free and the antioxidants present keeps you away from heart diseases. owers High Blood Pressure: Cashew nuts lower your blood pressure with the help of magnesium present in them. Helps Hair: Copper is the mineral, which helps your hair get that color. So, if you take cashews, which are full of copper content, you can get that black hair that you always wished for. Healthy Bones: Like calcium, magnesium is also important for bone health, which is the main content in cashew nuts. Healthy Nerves: Magnesium is stored on the bones surface, which prevents calcium from entering the nerve cells and thus keeps the blood vessels and muscles relaxed. Insufficient amount of magnesium can lead calcium to enter the blood vessels, leading them to contrast. It also leads to high blood pressure, migraine headache etc. Prevents Gallstones: Daily intake of cashew nut can reduce the risk of developing gallstones up to 25%. Also helps in Weight Loss, even though cashew nuts are considered as fats, it contains good cholesterol . So, contrary to popular belief, those who eat cashews at least twice a week gain less weight, when compared to those who eat less. Helps Digestion: Cashew nuts help in growth and development, nucleic acid synthesis and digestion. And also rich in high vitamins like riboflavin, pantothenic acid, thiamin, niacin etc. These vitamins keep you safe from sideroblastic anemia, pellagra, etc Aids healthy Gums and Teeth: As mentioned before, the magnesium content

L

present in cashew nuts is very good for bones. So, it gives healthy teeth, as well as strong gums to hold them and also aids pleasant sleep, after menopause, these cashew nuts can give you relaxed and pleasant sleep during nights. Free Radicals: Cashew nuts help our body to utilize iron properly and eliminate free radicals, which cause health problems and Macular Degeneration, which Cashew nuts have the ability to filter Sun’s UVrays and protect us from macular degeneration

The Nutrional Health Facts of Cashews Cashew nuts, a richly sweet product of the cashew tree, have gained popularity in North America and Europe, not only for their succulent flavor but for health benefits too. Whether roasted, salted, sugared or covered in chocolate, the cashew nut, often used as a flavorful complement to appetizers, main dishes and deserts, packs a mix of nutrients and minerals not found in many common foods. Cashew nuts, native to equatorial South America, are actually seeds, found growing on the end of the cashew apple, an edible and nutrient rich South American treat that is too fragile to export to North America or Europe . Also known by the botanical name Anacardium occidentale. Cashew is a close relative of mangoes, pistachios, poison ivy and poison oak. It was first introduced on a worldwide scale by Portuguese explorers in South America in the 16th century, but international trade didn’t take off until the 1920s. Sometimes called “nature’s vitamin pill,” cashew nuts, which now rank number one among nut crops in the world with 4.1 billion pounds produced in 2002 , have been used to promote wellness for centuries. MEDICAL BENEFITS he cashew tree’s leaves and bark as well as the popular cashew apple possess herbal health benefits that include killing bacteria and germs, stopping diarrhea, drying secretions, increasing the libido, and reducing fever, blood sugar, blood pressure and body temperature, but unfortunately, the byproducts of these parts of the cashew tree are not available in North America and Europe, mainly due to their highly perishable qualities. The cashew nut, a popular treat found on grocery and health food store shelves across the world, is packed with nutritional content. It packs 5 grams of protein per ounce and high levels of the essential minerals iron, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, copper and manganese, which are utilized in holistic health solutions and healthy diets. Diet and Weight Management Cashew nuts do have a relatively high fat content (12 grams per ounce, 2 grams saturated fat), but it is considered “good fat.” This is due to the agreeable fat ratio in the nut, 1:2:1 for saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated, respectively, which scientists say is the ideal ratio for optimal health. Cashew nuts also have a fatty acid profile that contributes to good health through phytosterols, tocopherols, and sqaulene, all of which lower the risk of heart disease, combined with the nut’s zero percent cholesterol content. Even with the relatively high fat content, cashew nuts are considered to be a “low-fat” nut. In fact, cashew nuts contain less fat per serving than many other popular nuts commonly found in grocery stores and health food stores, including almonds, walnuts, peanuts and pecans. Recommendations vary for cashew nut consumption in diet and weight loss. Cashew nuts have a high energy density and high amount of dietary fiber, both which have been attributed to a beneficial effect on weight management, but only when eaten in moderation Cardiovascular and Circulatory Health With no cholesterol, a rarity for such a tasty and pleasing treat, cashew nuts are a healthy fat food for heart patients. And because of their high levels of monounsaturated fatty acids, they also help support healthy levels of low good (HDL) cholesterol.

OLUSESI ISAAC writes, the betrayal of Osun government efforts on education is the harbinger of the recent state punitive measures meted on some students in public schools for unruly conduct, insisting on stiffer penalty for the mutineers to deter future crimes.

Students, Osun Radio And Sanction

T

he punishment is purgative. The government of the State of Osun, Nigeria, will not give sanctuary to the belligerent students in the public schools whatever is the motive for unruly behaviour. But the recent state punitive measures meted on the morally sick Ile-Ife High School students cannot go for anything far reaching. The recalcitrant dismissed students might want to strike back, perhaps by launching commando raids on Osun schools, or mount assaults on public utilities to communicate profound vengeance. Punishment, why? The Ife delinquents in Osun school uniform ignited a violent outbreak of disorder in the public domain, harassed and harmed persons and damaged property. It is a crime capable of setting contra-forces in motion. The mutinous students stormed the Osun Radio in Ile-Ife, and the staffs, gate guards and visitors were held hostage, hours unending that illegally seized the serenity of the radio house by force. They inflicted harm on the crew aboard in the transmission room and threatened to cause air-piracy. They vandalized dozens of vehicles in sight, and created a violently charged climate of terrorism to topple the government status quo on a matter that concerned the riotous students. Their kind of terrorism is the weapon of the weakest. The lawless Ife students from four (4) High Schools in the metropolis had spontaneously come together, with a degree of pseudo-cohesion baked in a common mood. But the group, not defined by rules and procedures was villainous in conduct. And they agreed to commit the lawless act, or had thought, they could accomplish a lawful end by unlawful means. The students, oriented to some unambiguous enemy public symbols, set for Osun Radio, and the choice ironically violated the public sense of security and paradoxically gave the Ife mutineers publicity of hate and condemnation from across the global village. Not publicity that could induce the Osun government towards their cause. The conduct of the students at the state radio house ranged from shouting obscenities to assault and vandalism that created an overwhelming fear, and sabotage to slow or halt the Rauf Aregbesola governance and administration of Osun, like an insurgent scene from the French railway riot of 1910 when workers destroyed sabots, the wooden shoes that held the rail in place. The orgy of violence infiltrated the surroundings of the radio house, some sections of metropolitan IleIfe. But the attitude of the people in the vicinity to the brutish attack on the radio house was not that of indignation and hostility to the Ife mob, the common enemies of the state. The people did not act into any heroic accomplishment; they only released accumulated tension by motions, dancing, singing, and other symbolic

•AREGBESOLA

gestures of mere emotions. The Ife people in the communities surrounding the radio house were only in collective frenzy. Their goal was collaborative and obsessive. The people were merely expressive crowds that also failed to identify the apparent danger towards which to act. They brooked delay and dissent, perhaps from fear as collective behaviour at the news of the invasion of the Osun Radio. The criminal attack made the individuals exhibit intense panic and they fled from danger. But that could not have been the only conceivable course of action. he Principals of the rebellious Ife schools ought to come under closer scrutiny. The conduct of the students at the radio house promptly reflected the manifests of the schools under the nose of the principals. Meaning that, the principals had unsuspectingly lost touch with value clarification, moral development, value analysis, and value inculcation in the students a long time ago such that the attack on the state radio is just the effect of the endorsement of value deficiency, somehow by the principals who ought to always help their students learn to become responsible citizens. The hostile students from Ife schools lacked the ability to input moral questions into their mob conduct in progress, and the principals deliberately ignored the aura of their students’ treasonable attack in its embryo that must have enveloped their schools. Neither did the principals deploy the tools of social

T

investigation and techniques of logic into the matter for the riot. The dismissal of the Ife villains from Osun schools by the state government is very much in order, but the dismissal should be one stanza of the penalty. The students had wanted to overrun the government of the All Progresssives Cngress (APC) in the state by their stormy attack on the transmission room of Osun Radio to adulterate programmes on air. The students, also as vandals ought to be sanctioned further. As though by law, students may assemble to exchange ideas or protest and demand reforms, no such right is claimed as absolute. The right of one to swing one’s hand stops at the other person’s nose. When dissent changes to disruption of public order and accompanied by violence that injures others and causes physical damage to persons and personal/ public property, it is a crime, as it were at the radio house, Ile-Ife. The conduct of the students is more a deliberately calculated crime that should be more punished by the state statutes that affix penalties and mode of treatment applicable to the crime to make the student-criminals give retribution for harm done and expiate their moral guilt. Even the civil disobedience groups considered as most privileged protesters accept willingly punishment for violating public order. he students should not be excused on accounts of ignorance of the facts of their conduct. One, their teen ages could

T

not be asserted in defence of the criminal charges in such a matter. Two, the conduct of the students at the radio house is actus rea, a voluntary omission, accompanied by mense rea, a guilt state of mind as their conduct is reckless. Three, the students could not be said to be fatigued, symptomatic of irritability, upset, and inhibition to rationalize. Four, the students were not drunk when the offence was committed as that could even aggravate their culpability; and they did not display any discernible mental disorder as to deprive them of substantial capacity to appreciate the criminality of their conduct. Five, the conduct is obviously dangerous and immoral, a menace requiring police apprehension and prosecution of the lawless students, at least to put them away from the society for a period of time so that they can no longer attack public property. Incarcerating them for, say three (3) months in the least will deprive them of their freedom as a way of making them pay a debt to the society they had tortured by their conduct at the radio house. Six, the incapacitation and retribution will deter them from future crime. And the society and public property will be protected from dangerous elements. And seven the correctional centres that hold offenders under the age of 18 will keep the Ife High School students from further contact with bad influence and will offer them counselling education, behavior re-training, skills in art works, and recreation activities to boost their health. riminal damage to the public and private property is punishable by fine or imprisonment. Describing the attack by the rascally Ife student on the radio house as a war by proxy would not be an over-statement. The aggressive students as mercenaries, carried out the invasion of such gravity in the inviolable premises of the Osun Radio, a neutral territory, out of bound to the belligerents and they were substantially motivated and paid, or so, it seemed. The students had mentors and spies. The spy had acted in disguise in the zone of the invasion, obtained information and passed same to the student-rebels. While the spy provided the protesters a false sense of self-consciousness, their mentors gave them a pseudo-sense of power and conviction. But the protesters could not even earn the ‘prisoner-ofwar’ status; they should be treated as a traue-tireur, unprivileged belligerents to be severely punished. The spy from within the radio house; and mentors, within their schools and outside should be prosecuted and fined or be put away in prison for some time. The student-protesters are the coauter, the authors, ones who committed the act ‘’with their own hands,’’ the principals in the first •Continued on page 11

degree; while the spy, though expectedly might not be present when the attack on the radio house occurred, is the principal in the second degree, the complicite par aide et assistsnce. The mentor, in the context is ‘the accessory before the fact.’ And the parents of the studentprotesters are ‘’the accessory after the fact’’ in the fourth and last degree of participation in the crime. Any of the parents who might refuse to pay for the damage should be prosecuted and fined for obstructing justice or as a warning to potential saboteur. The conduct of the students is not just a misdemenour, a less severe deed like drunkenness, vagrancy, non-forced sex offences, gambling and drug addiction punishable by fines only. Not conventional crimes comprising robbery, burglary and similar offences. Rather, it is a political crime in the class of treason, mutiny, sedition, espionage, sedition, sabotage and various protests defined as criminal. What was left of the naughty, nasty, haughty Ife students to do in the Osun Radio transmission room was to announce by force the sack of the state government and the secession of Ile-Ife from Osun. It is a mutiny, a revolt against constituted authority. It implies a conspiracy, an offence held as insubordination. If the Ife High School rascals were to be soldiers in a military government, then they would have all been dead by now after martial trial. ocio-psychologically, the Ife students’ conduct is antithetical to social rules and common understanding. The society prohibit the conduct, it is fearful and potentially harmful to its structure. Speaking on the matter, Ebenezer Deji Akinsola, a chartered account and chieftain of APC said, “The use of violence to achieve the most desirable goals is condemnable and punishable, to assure the security of individuals and the survival of Osun at all times.” And Onibokun Abimbola, Secretary General Nigeria Urban Forum, noted, “Violence cannot be an alternative to peaceful resolution. Students must restrain themselves from destroying our common heritage as a means of settling scores.” Nothing stopped the Nigeria Police from using tear gas that initiates eye pains, burn sensation

•Ooni of Ife in the nose and excessive flow of tears to incapacitate the Ife mob at the radio house. But such routine police action could have aggravated the riot. I think the Osun Combined Security Team (OCST) should now be more sensitive to the growing pluralism in the state secondary schools to deter criminals and assure citizens and public utilities including schools of safety. The OCST should base their tactics on crime prevention in schools by conspicuous foot patrol, to compliment the security patrol vehicles provided by Osun government that move quickly and randomly in the city streets in the night. Both the foot and vehicle patrols around High Schools in the state, with the OCST deploying their intimate knowledge of Osun communities and placing themselves at the hub of activities in Osun schools and environs will create feelings of OCST omnipresence to spot and intercept crimes in progress, although such preventive OCST patrols will elicit hostility from the likes of the Ife spies and mentors who worked for the Ife school rascals. The anti-crime potentials of such patrols are so great. here m u s t b e s y s t e m i c s e a r c h e s o n staff and visitors to sensitive public places like the state radio house. The use of

magnetometer, an electronic device to detect metal object; the low –pulse x-ray machines to search carry-on baggies and other belongings; and stationing personnel of the OCST at search points to the state media houses and other vital public properties will beef up security for our collective patrimony. The look of the Ife rebels, now dismissed from Osun schools is the look of children who live in crowded, run-down buildings in socially isolated areas, and walk to schools with undone home-works and unprepared for classes for the day. Such children have a set of values that only reflects the poverty of reasonability, sensibility, responsibility, sensitivity and sanity that betrays Osun government’s efforts on education. The efforts, so crucial to national identity and survival, include vital issues such as providing equal education opportunity to the disadvantaged Osun children of the slum or low-income families who daily exhibit frustration and hopelessness. Osu n edu cation is antisep tically administered to remove obstacles to achieving egalitarianism in the state school system that assures democratic governance in the state. Osun education is a fundamental tool to attain that.

Pendulum: Another Desperate Memo To President Buhari - Momodu

Y

our E x c e l l e n c y , A s s a l a m Alaikum. It has been over six months since you graciously invited me to your office in Abuja. I must note once again that I was truly honoured and humbled by our one-onone meeting. We spoke and interacted like two old buddies. What was more, I was all alone with you without a third party in the room. We spoke candidly and cracked jokes freely.I remember presenting you with an advance copy of my forthcoming book and you even requested me to autograph it for you which I did with such pride and gratitude in me. We took loads of pictures before and after the meeting. I left you reassured in my belief that Nigeria is in safe hands. Sir, a lot has happened since that meeting took place. In fact, so much water has passed under the bridge. Let me take you down memory lane a bit. You started contesting the Presidential election as far back as 2003. For three consecutive times, you lost and it seemed all hope had evaporated. In 2011, we were co-contestants. I was driven to your house one night by Prince Lanre Tejuoso (now a Senator) who wanted me to tone down my criticism of you and opposition to your candidacy. I was totally disarmed by your humility and simplicity. You spoke softly and candidly. I felt you were too old to return to a post you left nearly 30 years ago but you were certain you still have so much in you to offer Nigeria. The Jonathan government that won the election at that time was ushered in with so much hope and promise. After that election, you said that you would never seek elective office again. After three arduous attempts, you must have felt it was all a bloody waste of time seeking an opportunity to rebuild an irredeemable country that seemed determined to be plunged into the abyss by those you were convinced did not mean well for the country. But the government that promised us fresh air soon lost its sail and floundered aimlessly. It wobbled and fumbled till it became obvious that something had to be done to avert a monumental catastrophe, the kind that you had foreseen. The situation became so bad that most of us were left with no choice but to see you as our only Godsent redeemer. This was how the stone previously and repeatedly rejected by the builders suddenly transfigured into the much needed cornerstone. Your most caustic critics soon became your ardent fanatics. We were hypnotised and mesmerised by your new look. You were repackaged as a reformed and born again democrat. We studiously ignored your military credentials and dictatorial proclivity. The young and old screamed your name from the rooftops. Many youths were ready to march for you and even die in the process. The last time we witnessed such a phenomenon was in 1993 when Chief Moshood Abiola contested and won the June 12 Presidential election which was later annulled by your former colleagues in the army. You and your political party enjoyed a whirlwind romance with Nigerians. The covenant was based on mutual trust and the hope that you had robust knowledge of Nigerian history as well as vast experience in governance. Your avowed integrity was the icing on the cake. We expected you to inspire us as a veritable example of honestypersonified. The election came and you won almost effortlessly. What mattered to us was for someone to liberate and remove us from the suffocating yoke of the PDP. You looked the perfect man to do it. Of course, to whom much is given

My silent approach to the recovery of the looted funds would also ensure that the expectations of the people of this country would not be unnecessarily heightened. The money Abacha pillaged is still being recovered in staccato and stuttering fashion almost 20 years after his death. t is important for you to realise that corruption will fester and even explode when it is incubated in an economy approaching a comatose state as people seek to survive by all means possible. I will therefore make the economy my utmost priority. Trust me Sir, as important as the war against corruption is wonderful, it pales into irrelevance and insignificance where hunger, deprivation, poverty, unemployment, poor education, ignorance, diseases, insecurity of lives and properties and other complications are concerned. Many people are going to hail you for arresting the thieves but the same people will soon turn around to attack you when they can’t feel the effect of the war positively on their bodies and souls. In case you are shielded from reading the comments making the rounds, let me inform you Sir, that people are already saying they would rather have corruption back, out of the desperation and suffering they are going through. And these are not the so-called looters but the ordinary Nigerians. Nothing illustrates this more poignantly than the video posted by Instablog9ja on Instagram and other social media platforms yesterday showing a man that looks like a taxi driver being interviewed. The man said he is so frustrated that he wants Nigeria to perish and all of us with it instantaneously. He wished that we all die simultaneously, at once and suddenly. The clip has already gone viral globally. Therefore, if anyone tells you only the elites are grumbling, they are telling you a blatant lie, Sir. The poor who were your best friends and biggest supporters appear totally confused, disillusioned and ostensibly tired of the endless excuses coming out of your Administrations spokespeople. I read somewhere that your foot-soldiers will soon embark on town hall meetings but I can assure you it won’t achieve anything. Why do you want to engage in campaign after election? ome expert scammers would just collect money for these jamborees. Nigerians want positive change and not a cacophony of lies bandied at stage managed, hurriedly assembled meetings populated by sycophants and glory hunters. They are ready to sacrifice but not when they think things are going from bad to worse. There is so much to do but without an agile economy nothing tangible can be achieved. The economy itself cannot be fixed in an atmosphere of permanent strife. One year will soon pass by next month and a second year shall begin. It is time to bite the bullet and take the economy head on. Forget about all distractions and concentrate on what really matters to the generality of our people. You will find out that once the economy is tamed all else will follow suit and the successes that you crave in your corruption crusade will start being manifested. I pray you will hearken to my humble advice and concentrate your energy on resurrecting the economy instead of embarking on a war of attrition. You will be judged ultimately by the comfort you bring to your people and not the self-immolating pain you inflict on real and imaginary enemies. May Allah grant you the wisdom of Nelson Mandela who chose the path of reconciliation and national rebirth above the tempting choice of prolonging •Culled From The Boss Newspaper

much is expected. The burden of proof and expectation hung around your neck like an albatross. Soon, it seemed Nigerians thought and assumed that they had voted for a magician and so expected miracles to happen instantaneously. Trouble started very early. You inherited a government with plummeting revenues as the crude oil which greased the economy had suffered a massive collapse in price thus emasculating our country’s fortune and reserves. In addition, just before you returned to power the outgoing government had twice devalued the Naira leaving you with a currency that was set for free fall. In short the Government that you assumed control of was one which was like a disaster waiting to happen. igerians a r e g e n e r a l l y impatient. We are action-packed and expect talismanic results. Unfortunately that has not happened and is not likely to happen soon no matter how hard you try. Sir, let me stop the introduction and go straight to the crux of the matter. While I do not want to sound like a doomsday prophet, I wish to alert you that there is fire on the mountain. This is not a subtle or covert attempt to create any panic. As a war General, I’m certain you have enough liver to withstand shock. But what I wish to say without mincing words is that we are yielding grounds to the enemies. Hard core supporters of your campaign like me are being derided by those who feel you are not living up to expectations. I know your handlers are likely to dismiss this as crying wolf where there is none but please, don’t listen to them. The situation is very critical and may even get out of hand if not carefully and delicately managed. You are going to be told the usual tales and rigmarole of how corruption is fighting back. Yes, perhaps corruption is fighting back truly but it is because you did not prepare adequately for the backlash. The style and manner of the war you are waging has not been novel. The approach has been a rehash of the Obasanjo era with Nuhu Ribadu in charge. What would I have done differently

N

if I were you? I would have traced and located the loot as much as possible before launching my attack. Surprise is one of the most effective weapons of war. And you are without doubt an accomplished General. It is only in Nigeria that investigators announce in advance who the next set of villains they are coming after will be. I would have gone to the courts to seek permission to freeze the looted funds. Thereafter, I would have asked my operatives to show evidence of the identified perpetrators and located the looters and ask for their cooperation in gently signing the purloined money back to the State without hullabaloo. I will then exchange a grudging handshake and tell them to sin no more. Those who wish to be difficult would be treated like hardened criminals and the full weight of the law would descend powerfully on such recalcitrant fellows. I would have kept the promise you made prior to assumption of office of drawing the line after being sworn in on May 29 and punish any fresh acts of rascality and irresponsibility. I will ensure there is a uniform treatment for all Nigerians, rich or poor, members of my party and others. I will avoid anything that would suggest I’m principally after my perceived enemies and opponents. I will not create tension and confusion within my own party and accept the verdict of the people in their collective wisdom or stupidity. A house divided against itself cannot stand, I read in the Holy Bible. would also make sure that as much as possible I would internalise the process and not wash the country’s dirty linen in public. Such tactics only tends to frighten away those who would assist us and make life unbearable for our citizens abroad. If we require assistance from other countries to repatriate our looted resources I would have engaged the leaders of those countries privately and sought their co-operation surreptitiously. I would have realised that even if they desired to assist my government they would be hampered by the rule of law enshrined in their respective jurisdictions and recourse would be required to the judicial process in those countries.

Full Detailed Review Of The Infinix Hot Note Smartphone

O

n Monday the 9th of March Infinix released the smartphone we have been waiting for all these years - a worthy and significant successor to the much loved Infinix Alpha (X570). Thank goodness, the wait is finally over and this newly released smartphone or phablet called the Infinix Hot Note (X551) is the perfect successor to the X570. Although Infinix believes that the Hot Note is a successor to the Infinix Hot, the constant users and lovers of the X570 will agree that the Infinix Hot Note X551 is that perfect successor to the Infinix Alpha since both X551 and X570 are both phablets. The Inifnix HOT NOTE is a wonderful smartphone and for the short period of time of it being used, we can say this is a powerful and perfect smartphone especially for the price its being offered. The question you may have been asking is “what makes the Infinix Hot Note so unique to be called the perfect successor the Alpha?” See details after the jump. The Infinix Hot Note aka X551 is a phablet with outstanding performance and specs especially seeing how low cost it is. It comes in 4 different colors: anthracite grey, copper brown, Champagne gold and Mint green. Below we present to you the different specifications of the smartphone. In the Box Upon purchasing your Infinix HOT NOTE it should come in an attractive packaging. The contents of the newly bought device should be your Infinix X551 smartphone, a micro USB cord, a USB charger head, a 3.5mm earphone, a manual and a screen cleaning cloth as shown below. Once the phone is taken from the box you will notice how comfortable it is to old. Also no splatter of Infinix on the front except subtly at the back close to the middle and Hot Note at the bottom close to the speakers. When you put on your device using the button from the right side of the phone just below the volume keys, you are greeted with the gentle infinix logo and then phone is quickly booted into the Android 4.4.2 home screen. On the front is a led notification light but could’nt get it to work. Network and SIM card The Infinix HOTNOTE comes with a dual one mini SIM card for slot 2 and a micro SIM card slot for SIM 1 which you insert by opening the back case from the bottom close to the USB port. Once the back case is opened, the SIM card slots will be revealed and you can gently and easily slide in both the SIM 1 and SIM 2 into the slots. Another great plus is that both SIM card slots supports GSM/ WCDMA so you can use 3.75G network connection on both SIMs. The X551 supports both the 2G, 3G, 3.75G or better known as the HSPA+ technology for data transfer. It should be noted that the 3.75G network technology gives data transfer speed as much as the 4G transfer speed. Also the network bands of the Infinix HOT NOTE are 850/900/1800/1900 MHz for GSM and 900/2100 MHz for WCDMA. These network bands mean that if you find yourself on other countries like UK, USA etc, you will still be able to use your smartphone as it would be compatible with those networks excepts for maybe some Chinese networks. Weight and Dimemsions The X551 is not just a great smartphone, it s also a well designed device with appropriate weight and dimensions to allow for good handling. Most 5.5 inch devices are not easy to hold or even operate on one hand but the X551 is very easy to hold and and also comfortable. Hence the bezel was trimmed to be as close to the screen as possible. The Infinix HOT NOTE has dimensions 156 x 77.88 x 8.9 mm and weights just 172g. The cutting according to Infinix was done using the CNC laser technology

25mins. The phablet don’t only have a great battery, it also comes with inbuilt battery management app which helps you to automatically manage your battery depending on the battery juice left. o charge the device, the provided USB cable is plugged at the bottom right side of the device and then charging should begin. The charger head delivers 3.1A current. Memory and RAM When a phone this good comes with a enough memory then we can say the phone is super good and that is what we will call the Infinix HOT NOTE - a super good smartphone. Each unit of Infinix HOT NOTE will come with 16GB internal memory in which 10.6GB is made available. This is to allow for pictures and other contents to be stored on it. However, if you so much desire more space on your device, the extra memory card slot which supports up to 32GB of SD card should do the trick. Although Android KitKat 4.4 is capable of supporting up to 64GB memory card so if you have that much don’t hesitate to slide it into the device. In order to make apps run smoothly, a 1GB RAM is bundled in with the device. These of course should be enough for most users even though 2GB and 3GB RAM is other of the day now. Camera In this time and day, a phone without camera is considered a useless old mama’s phone so its important we state that the Infinix HOT NOTE comes with 8.0 mega pixel AF camera capable of taking great pictures with pixel resolution as high as 3264 x 2448 pixels. It also has geo-tagging feature, face detection and a dedicated LED flashlight just below the camera for taking pictures in low light areas. The camera is situated at the top right side with the LED flash light just immediately below the camera. Videos can also be recorded @30fps for 1080p videos and 720p @60fps. Front camera comes equipped with 2.0 mega pixel FF camera with image resolution as high as 1936 x 1096 pixels. The camera is also capable of doing a video call if the need arises. Connectivity and Sensor The Infinix HOT NOTE is equipped with a dual band WiFi 802.11 a/b/ g/n wireless chip for those that love to connect their devices to wireless networks. Also, it has option to turn your phone to a wireless router; hence it has the Hotspot feature. Furthermore, it has Bluetooth v4.0, HotKnot 2.0 for sharing files and standard micro USB port for connecting the device to both a computer for exchanging data or for charging. It will bring peace of mind to some to know that this device also supports USB OTG. GPS and AGPS accuracy on this phablet is exceptional. Within a matter of seconds, it makes my location known something that some smartphone takes minutes to determine an example is the Blu 5.0C smartphone. Also when it comes to sensors, the Infinix HOT NOTE comes with the usual light, proximity, gyro and Hall sensors. Other features Other features of this smartphone apart from its fast charge technology are its ability to have letters be drawn on the screen to launch certain applications. Furthermore because of the partnership between Jumia and Infinix, every buyer of Infinix HOT NOTE will get 2GB data 100% free and free music streaming from MTN. Also it has FM Radio, ebook reader, Voice recording a smart cover that can be used to turn of the display when its not needed. Furthermore, the Infinix HOT NOTE comes pre-installed with Gmail, flashshare, Whatsapp, Facebook etc.

which allows for high precision in the cutting and finishing of the metallic body of the Infinix HOT NOTE phablet. Screen Resolution and Display he display and screen resolution of the Infinix HOT NOTE is very astounding. It comes with a 5.5 inch HD IPS-TFT display that allow for great colours and good viewing angles. It should also be noted that it has a very short refresh rate which means that this device display would be very great for gaming. Not only is the display a good one, the resolution is also impressive. It comes with a resolution 720 x 1280 pixels. Viewing documents, browser contents and other files on a sunny day was splendid. I had no issues with it and with my smartphone-enabled gloves on, using the device was not hassle. Operating System and Processor Am sure you can easily guess that the operating system for the Infinix HOT NOTE is Android KitKat 4.4.2 which is currently the most common Android OS. The fluidity of the 4.4.2 android kitkat is amazing especially when you have a stock Android with a 1GB RAM on it which is what you would find on the X551 smartphone. Under the hood running things and making sure your phone stay in good shape is the 1.4GHz octa-core MediaTek processor. The 8 cores processor allow for a better multitasking than a quad core processor hence you get a very non-laggy experience when the device is in use - something we have already experienced with the Infinix Zero smartphone. Like that is not enough, you have the popular very reliable MALI 450 as the GPU of choice to make sure that all

T

those graphics intensive applications can be handled without qualms. One of the great features with this device is the quick launch feature in which you can launch an app when you wake up the phone by drawing an alphabet. For example, the following alphabets will do these: Double tap the screen to wake up/ sleep it.- Draw a “I” to access the dialerDraw a “E” to access the browser- Draw a “W” for wechat- Draw a “C”for the camera- Draw a “O” for Facebook Battery Capacity and Features ne of the high selling points of this smartphone is the battery life. Its so awesome I feel like a heavy burden was taken off my back. As a user of the iPhone, i constantly have to charge my phone at least 3 times a day to have juice in it. However, since I started testing out the Infinix HOT NOTE, a single charge per day was enough to last me with all my heavy duty activities. This is thanks to 4000mAh LiPo battery in the device. The smartphone comes with a non removable inbuilt battery of 4000mAh that is way above most smartphones or phablet in the market. Although you may be quick to say that the amount of battery doesn’t really mean it will last well, however, I can say for the past few days that its being in my possession, the battery as lived to its 4000mAh capacity. Not only is the battery good, furthermore, Infinix has decided to implement the fast charge technology yo find in recent Samsung devices. According to Infinix Mobility, with Infinix fast charge, you can charge you phablet from 0% to 75% within 55mins and up to 50% within

arcelona captain Andres Iniesta and defender Gerard Pique have acknowledged that the players are suffering a major dip in form at just the wrong time this season following Wednesday’s Champions League exit at the hands of Atletico Madrid. always have a little dip Luis Enrique’s men and this is our one at crashed out 3-2 on the moment,” Pique a g g r e g a t e t o t h e i r told reporters. “We just S p a n i s h r i v a l s a f t e r want it to be as short as l o s i n g W e d n e s d a y ’ s possible because we have quarterfinal second leg La Liga and Copa del Rey 2-0 at the Estadio Vicente coming up. break, Barcelona have struggled. Against Villarreal, they missed out on the chance to go 11 points clear at the top of the Primera Division as they squandered a two-goal advantage in a 2-2 draw. That loss was followed by defeats to Real Madrid and Real Sociedad, which saw their La Liga lead shrink to three points. They were outplayed in the first half against Atletico last week coming into Wednesday’s loss. “I think the team aren’t in the best form of the season, but we have to pick ourselves up,” Pique said. “We all try to do our best in every game. We have to win the two competitions we are still involved in.” Veteran midfielder Iniesta, meanwhile, said the Champions League exit left the players questioning themselves. “Difficult times like

this always generate doubts but we have to turn the page and focus on what we have left,” he said after the Catalan side missed out on the Champions League semifinals for just the third time in 11 years. The 31-year-old added: “We’re not in very positive form. We have to find strength from somewhere because what we still have to play for is very nice too.” With Barca needing a goal to send it to extra time, they were denied a late penalty after a Gabi handball was judged to have been outside the area. Iniesta, however, said the play was no excuse for losing. “It’s not a question of whether the referee was right or wrong. That would solve nothing,” he said. “It is difficult to take in because we’re out of such a nice tournament.”

Administrator Wants Better Incentive For Sportsmen

opefully b y t h i s weekend, the scarcity associated with petroleum products in the country, especially Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and kerosene would have subsided. It would be a cheering news to most Nigerians and would also have been a promise kept by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, who doubles as the Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr Ibe Kachikwu The last four weeks have been really agonising and traumatic for most people because of the major role fuel plays in our economy. Not only do we need fuel in our vehicles but also in most factories and in generators at home, since electricity supply has been epileptic. Can we really blame the immediate-past government of President Goodluck Jonathan alone? It is my humble submission that all our leaders need to share in the blame. How does the longest military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, feel when he sees long queues of vehicles at petrol stations, with some sleeping in those stations, just to get fuel for their vehicles? With the humongous amount of revenue generated from petroleum, one would have thought that a lot of money should have been spent by the Gowon government to expand the base of oil, which is producing the revenue spent by the government. There was nothing stopping the government from constructing many refineries, either alone or in partnership with the private sector. For a country that is the sixth world producer of crude oil to have only four malfunctioning refineries is to say the least, appalling. If only Gowon had had the foresight to invest in the petroleum industry, not only would the country be getting foreign currency from the sale of crude oil but also hard currency would be generated through the sale of refined petroleum products. And above all, we would have secured gainful employment for our teeming youths. Yes, it is true that the Gowon administration built most of the infrastructure we have in the country today; the overhead bridges in Lagos, the many highways and the skyscrapers which dotted the lines of Lagos. Gowon could have done more, considering his infamous statement of; “in Nigeria, money is not our

problem but how to spend it”. eneral O l u s e g u n Obasanjo as a leader was notorious for constantly reviewing the prices of petroleum products upwards. He was advised to embrace and appreciate the fact that it was only by increasing the price of petroleum products that the problem in the industry could be solved. Even when he came back as a civilian president, that reductionist approach did not abate. Today, how does he feel, as a leader who had the wonderful opportunity to rule the country twice at different times but could not do much to ameliorate the problem of the all important petroleum industry? Even at a point, overwhelmed by the enormity of the problem, he deregulated the purchase and sale of diesel, such that today, diesel is not part of the petroleum products the government regulates. General Ibrahim Babaginda (rtd), like leaders before him, could not effectively handle the problem in

the oil industry. At a point, his government segmented the sale of petrol into two sectors, the public and private. Public vehicles like commercial buses were buying fuel at N30, while private cars were purchasing a litre N42 at designed petrol filling stations. Ultimately the price was fused together at N42. Again he was not proactive enough to appreciate the fact that he ought to build new refineries. resident Umaru Musa Yar’Adua short-lived government inherited crises within the industry, because at the twilight of Obasanjo’s administration, he decided to increase the price of a litre of fuel, which Yar’Adua was compelled to bring down a bit. It is also on record that for the first time in the country, Yar’Adua’s government reduced the price of a litre of petrol without the prompting of the people. President

P

Goodluck Jonathan had the ample opportunity to do much but refused to. The price of a barrel of crude oil hit an all time high of over $148 during his regime, yet today, there is nothing to be proud of. igerians continue to witness the perennial shortage of petroleum products as a result of the exigencies in the international market. Even when Nigerians compelled the Jonathan government to reduce the price of oil as a result of fall in the price of oil in the international market, it was short-lived as shortage in the availability of the products forced up the price. Again, the importation of fuel was fraught with fraud and there were allegations of some influential individuals with import licences enjoying subsidy without lifting oil. Unfortunately, the Muhammadu Buhari government has inherited all these problems. Interestingly, Nigerians are not ready for excuses. Nigerians are not to be blamed because they have endured for long and have witnessed leaders misusing public funds in the midst of plenty, while the people suffer. It is unfortunate that our leaders were not proactive enough to know that some basic infrastructure must be put in place. Like it is in the petroleum industry, so also it is in the railway. The lines laid by the colonial masters in the 19th century used for transporting our goods to Europe are the ones still in place. Obasanjo realised this at the twilight of his administration and invited the Chinese to come and invest. Unfortunately the succeeding governments did not give the desired and the required attention it deserved to the sector Today, there is no official air carrier for the country, not to talk of a shipping line. Our leaders are amongst the most travelled ones, they see good things in other lands, yet, they do not transfer such home. The only thing they are interested in is the perquisites that go with public office. Our leaders are always bogged down by a clique of people derisively referred to as AGIP (Any Government In Power). They are a coterie of friends, who always advise leaders against the interest of the people. As long as these people continue to have influence on public office holders, hardly can anything good come out from our leaders.
