Oba-Ile/Oba-Oke: Let Peace Reign Please Lessons of history have

The crises that have been rocking the two communities of Oba-IIe and Oba-Oke in Olorunda Local Government Council Area in the state of Osun call for worry. What, for God's sake, are the warring communities stand to gain from constantly being at war with one another, other than loss?

And when we talk of loss here we mean loss in all its ramifications as a Yoruba adage says; "brawl (and a bloody one for that matter such as the ones we witnessed between these two communities towards the end of last year) doesn't enrich the pockets of the gladiators, it only gives them a bad name".

also taught us that war doesn't breed gentle and prosperous offspring but belligerent ones that can never do the gladiators any good. Hence the globally accepted saying that; 'it's better to jaw-jaw than to war-war'. Whether at a micro or macro level of a commu-

nity of people no matter what level of provocations from any quarters humans have come to realise the advantage, nay, superiority of negotiation and amicable resolutions of issues over settling of disputes by going into war. CONTINUE ON Pg. 5

Osun Election: INEC Sets Machinery In Motion •APC, Labour Leader Advocate Transparent Processes By KEHINDE AYANTUNJI

Independent National Electoral T HE Commission (INEC) has assured all participating political parties and members of the electorate of conducting transparent and credible election during the fast-approaching August 9th, 2014 governorship election in the State of Osun. The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Ambassador Rufus Akeju, said the electoral body has set necessary machinery in motion to ensure the success of the process, while speaking with journalists at the State INEC office in Osogbo on Wednesday.

Akeju said in preparation to build public confidence, all the Direct Capturing Data Machines (DDC) used in the last election have been regularised and certified in readiness for the upcoming Continuous Voters Registration Exercise coming soon. He added that the commission has also carried out the process of

identification and reconfiguration of polling units with more than five hundred voters with the aim of creating more polling units where necessary. The purpose, according to the commissioner, is to streamline the voting process for ease of returns, security, accountability and prevention of violence. On the logistics, Akeju disclosed that the list of the required electoral materials, both sensitive and non-sensitive, have been forwarded to the commission headquarters

in Abuja for procurement, including the election budget. He assured that the process involved will ensure that all required materials are made available in sufficient quantity and quality and distributed as and when due to allow for seamless operations. The INEC boss explained that the commission has employed more workers in the state to increase the human capacity, while it has also maintained close contact with the NYSC on the ad-hoc staff. “The manpower

requirement has been determined in advance, we have contacted the NYSC coordinator in the state and ascertained the number of Youth Corps members that will serve as ad-hoc staff during the election” The logistics for the effective and efficient distribution of men and materials prior to and provision of adequate security personnel during the election have been programmed for implementation to ensure effective coverage of all polling units and timeliness on voting day,” Akeju said. Meanwhile, All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in the state, Chief Jumoke Ogunkeyede, has urged INEC to be more serious about the conduct of the election and not to repeat the flaws in Anambra governorship election. Ogunkeyede said: “In the last eight years, we have witness two elections in this state and INEC must learn from the two elections to understand the seriousness of our people in protecting their electoral mandate. Any flaw or poor standard

election will not be accepted by the people of the state “Electoral process starts from voters’ registration and the major task before the INEC at the moment is to produce a credible voters’ register that will be acceptable and be serious about other preparations because August is not too far,” Ogunkeyede said. Also, the State Coordinator of the Federation of Informal Workers (FIWON), Comrade Yinka Ibraheem, said the success of the election, mostly revolves around the INEC. Ibraheem said: “ The INEC is expected to conduct a transparent and credible election and to achieve this, the electoral umpire must start the preparation now, so that no one will be disenfranchised and there must the sufficient election materials. “The INEC must also create a level-playing ground for all political parties through a transparent process that will not be a subject of litigation and the security agencies must also perform their responsibilities with all civility.”

NRCRI To Establish Crops Research Institute In Osun By KEHINDEAYANTUNJI

T HE National Root Crops Research Institute, Umudike, has secured the approval of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture to establish an extension of a Root Crops Research Institute in the State of Osun. If established, it will be first sub-station of the institute in the South West and the 6th in the country. The Chairman, Governing Board of the Institute, Dr Oluwole Aina, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the state governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, at the Government Secretariat, Abere on Wednesday. According to him, the establishment of the substation would commence in the first quarter of 2014, which will go a long way in assisting the state government agriculture programmes and strategy. He said the benefits of the station to the state include direct youth

employment, development of beneficial linkages between the state government agricultural programmes and the institute’s research work Dr Oluwole added that the institute would be assisting in regular access to new varieties of root and tuber crops and increase agricultural production, economic growth and wealth creation. He also said that farmers and government officials will have access to training in short courses and degree programmes, including the extension services to the farmers. The institute however demanded from the state government the provision of

land to site the substation, payment of compensation to the landowners, and provision of access road to the station, as part of the partnership. Responding, Aregbesola appreciated the decision of the institute to site the station in Osun, saying his administration is serious and committed to agricultural development and food security. “The 50% of our Six Integral Action Plans centred on agriculture and food security, to banish hunger, poverty and unemployment, we recognise agriculture as a means to survive as a state. “Through our school feeding programme, the pupils are eating 300,000 eggs, 400 tonnes of catfish, 35 heads of cattle, 15,000 chickens and we are committed to building the

state capacity to produce the food items in the state and be supplying other states, food to create wealth in the state”. Aregbesola said as much as the state is willing to help the institute on the compensation and administrative structure, the government is constrained financially at the moment. He said for the past six months, the federal allocation to the state has fallen to “unimaginable rate of 40%, which is incapacitating the state to perform its statutory responsibilities.” Aregbesola assured the institute on the provision of land, as soon as possible, while the state government will also liaise with the governing board of the institute to agree on other areas of urgent intervention to kick start the institute.

Oba-Ile/Oba-Oke: Let Peace Reign Please Continued From Page 1.

This is because after the war, when lots - in terms of lives and properties - must have been lost, the warring parties must still come to a round table for an amicable resolution of their crisis. What this means invariably is that no dispute can ever be settled through war. There is no denying the fact that there cannot be progress in an atmosphere devoid of peace. There can only be progress and development where there is peace. History has testified much to this assertion. No doubt the commendable progress that Osun has witnessed under Ogbeni Aregbesola's leadership is made possible by the peaceful atmosphere that

exists in the state since the inception of his administration. The Governor deserves kudos for this. Therefore nothing should disturb the peace in the state. This is necessary so Ogbeni can continue his good work without hindrance or distraction. In our country Nigeria, nay, our own dear state of Osun stories of communal clashes leave a sour taste in the mouth. Take for instance the devastation war wrought on Ife and Modakeke towns when it visited them cannot be easily forgotten. The memory is sad. Ugly sites of the devastation can still be seen all over the towns. The unquantifiable loss of properties to the war if could be replaced with time it's not the case

with the precious lives lost to the war. Of course those lives have become eternally irreplaceable. We don't want a reoccurence of such a sad event in our state. And this is why as good citizens of the state we must avoid any acts of omission or commission on our part that can lead to such a devastating development. Brawl and war do nobody any good. They only deter progress and affect us negatively in many ramifications. This is why we are appealing to the people of Oba-Ile and Oba-Oke to embrace peace. There is need to allow peace to reign as we stand to gain aplenty both individually and collectively in an atmosphere of peace. Finally, we must commend Mr. Governor for

Omoluabi Cartoon

taking steps towards ending the Oba-Ile/ Oba-Oke crisis permanently especially the setting up of a Committee to work out amicable resolution of the problem. In the interest of peace and continued progress in our dear state the two communities must abide by the recommendations the Committee will come up with as conditions for peace. No party in this case must see itself as the victor while there is also no vanquished. More than ever before this is the time we need peace most as election is on the way to re-elect our performing Governor who is set to take Osun to a great height. Osun needs peace so we can continue to enjoy dividends of democracy under our focused and visionary Governor, Ogbeni Aregbesola.

INTERVIEW

OSUN DEFENDER Saturday, February 1, 2014

Osun Govt Efforts Is Attracting Investors - Lawmaker Honourable Kamardeen Akanbi, represents Ede North Constituency in the State Assembly of Osun. An Industrial Consultant, he is Chairman, House Committee on Commerce, Cooperative, Industry and Empowerment. In this interview with our reporter, KAZEEM MOHAMMED, he spoke on the new face of industrialisation under the administration of Governor Rauf Aregbesola among others. Excerpts:has the business of OSDF: How lawmaking been like within the last two years that you have been in this Assembly? AKANBI: It is really interesting, especially for first timers like us. You can see that since the inception of this Assembly, we have not performed badly when you consider the numbers of bills considered and passed. Also, the Speaker of the House is someone that is ready to carry every member along and ready to listen to your contribution. So, it is interesting and challenging when you put into consideration the knowledge that is required for you to be able to make meaningful contribution on the floor of the House. OSDF: As an Industrial Consultant, how have you been able to use your professional background to assist the Assembly in the business of lawmaking? AKANBI: I have to first commend Mr Speaker for putting round pegs in round holes and ask me to chair the Committee on Commerce, Cooperatives and Empowerment. As an Industrial Consultant, my line of activities has always been in line of commerce and industry. However, before the advent of this administration, commercial and industrial activities were at a very low ebb. When you talk of industrialisation before the advent of this administration, it was only the moribund Cocoa Processing Industry in Ede and the industry has been in comatose for long, but with the advent of this administration, we put heads together to revive it. Subsequently, a board was put in place to re-negotiate the factory and the government has now signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a Chinese company. We hope that anytime from now, the company will commence production, just as I urge the board and the investors to fast-track their efforts, so that the industry will commence operation. Besides that, if you go to the Free Trade Zone at Abere now, you will see one or two manufacturing activities springing up. There is already a company going into the assemblage of commercial mini-buses, known as Korope. Apart from that, another company, Omoluabi Garment Industry has also sprang up at Abere, which deals with sewing of uniforms and some other clothing materials, and not less 100 indigenes of the state are working there now. Also, a company dealing with assemblage of electronics has sprang up in Ilesa, all under this administration. So, investors are allowed to come to the state for investment, as all requirements, like good road network, water, electricity and above all, security of lives and properties are being put in place by this government to encourage small and medium scale industrialists. When you talk of commerce, the establishment of Ayegbaju and Aje Markets, commercial activities will improve a lot. The market looks more of warehouse type of market, whereby manufacturers will bring their products directly from point of manufacture to Osogbo. This will give the traders

opportunities to buy at Lagos prices. OSDF: How far will you say the government has gone interms of fulfilling electioneering campaign promises? AKANBI: On a very serious note, the administration of Aregbesola has done well, because before the governor came in, he had studied the problem facing Osun and he has come up with a six-point integral action plan to address the problems and he has been following these one by one. This is a government that has been able to cover all aspects of the economy. For instance, look at the reformation in the education system, whereby, new modern buildings are being constructed to provide enabling environment for learning at the elementary, middle and high schools. There are so many other initiatives like Opon Imo, school uniforms, O’Meal and so many others to make education accessible to students. Also, look at massive road construction going on across the length and breadth of the state. There is the 10-kilometer road project per local government council area. No government has ever ventured into such massive project. For instance in my own council area, it has a stretch of 10 kilometer road linking Ede to Ijesaland and this has assisted in transforming both rural and urban areas. Farmers are now able to bring their farm produce to market without any problem. Besides that, government has also done a lot in the health sector by carrying out surgical operations residents of the free-of-charge, giving out free eye glasses and treating so many other ailments freeof-charge, just as all the state hospitals are being renovated and equipped. The ambulance scheme is also there to cater for any emergency, either on the road or in the homes. Also on agriculture, government has opened up virgin lands for farmers to use free-of-charge. The various efforts of the government have also reduced the level of insecurity in the state. With the way Ogbeni Aregbesola has handled the issue of security in this state, people can now sleep with their two eyes closed. Ogbeni has really tried and changed negative impression about government. OSDF: But members of the opposition are saying that the administration has not done anything reasonable interms of development, how will you react? AKANBI: It is because they don’t expect what they are seeing. Their thinking was that Aregbesola would come to mess up the whole thing the way they did. They thought if Ogbeni Aregbesola did not perform, they would be able to find their ways back, but they were disappointed and the level of performance of the administration is giving them headache. There is nothing they want to use to canvass for people’s votes, except lies. Less than seven months to the election, we have not seen anything to show that they are serious because they know that if they should go out to campaign, people will reject them. People of Osun have

•AKANBI

measured their performance in their seven and half years and compare it with that of Ogbeni. They spent their time doing nothing, because Aregbesola’s performance within the last three years has out-scored that of their seven and half years. They want to come back, and they don’t know what to, that is why you see them shouting unnecessarily. What again do they want Ogbeni to do, they should say it to the world. If they want to criticise, they should make it constructive, not just for the sake of it. I learnt recently that one of their aspirants went to inspect the Nelson Mandela Freddom Square with a view to holding a campaign rally there and I said, if Ogbeni has not constructed that square, will he go there to campaign, yet, they are telling lies. Let him go there to campaign and people will ask him, when you were in government, why didn’t you do such a thing. No matter their lies, they can’t come here to rule us again. Even when Aregbesola has not started administering the state, we defeated them and now that he has convinced the people of his ability to transform the state, we will defeat them as usual. The voting masses are there to vote and I don’t have any fear that Aregbesola will excel in the next governorship election. Those who are benefitting from the developmental strides of Aregbesola are there in millions to vote. OSDF: Do you subscribe to the school of thought that the PDP has its grip in towns like Ede, Ife and some other towns and that those places are no go area for the APC? AKANBI: As I am talking to you now, go to Ede, where I come from and investigate whether the PDP has any grip there. When Ogbeni has not started all the development you are seeing, we defeated them. Though, they have some pockets of followership in the places you have mentioned, but when the proper election comes, you will see what I am saying. I may not be able to speak much for Ife because I am not from there, but I

know that there is nowhere in Osun where the PDP has any grip. Day by day, PDP members are defecting to APC across the state. For instance, apart from what the government is doing, as a lawmaker representing Ede North, there are some steps I have taken to assist the people. Among others things that I have done, I gave out loans to traders to the tune of N1.5million on three occasions, which I later wrote off. So, the PDP has not grip anywhere, because when they were here, their body languages have shown that they can’t rule the people properly. OSDF: The election is approaching and there have been allegations that the PDP was trying to cause violence in the state and counter allegations, how will you advise the people in this regard? AKANBI: Firstly, I want to advise the people of Osun to remain calm, even, in the face of antagonism by the PDP. We know they want to disturb activities in the state, with a view to asking the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency, so that they will be able to rig the election. I must say that you can only rig where the people appreciate you and what you are doing. They had shown that their target is to cause mayhem when the PDP leaders instigated their members to resist the separation of some structure to leave road setback, but this present government is a government that believes in the rule of law. People should be vigilant and quickly report any plan or attempt to cause mayhem in their areas to security agencies. Also, when the election comes, the people should not forget to vote for the APC, the party that has improved their lots and transform the state and stand by their vote. Besides, I want to warn the PDP that the monopoly of violence is not restricted to them, but we are only being considerate because we have plans for the people to turn Osun to a haven of peace and development, where everybody will be willing to live in.

Changing Our Attitudes Towards Work In 2014 By JOHN TOSIN AJIBOYE

OUR attitudes as a nation towards work must change positively this year if we must develop and if we must actualise our vision 20:2020 et al. The lack of enthusiasm is very glaring in the attitude of many workers, who see their jobs as dull, laborious, repetitious, tedious, irritating, risky or dangerous. The only joy some workers get out of their jobs is closing time. That was why Jim Michael, a television journalist in Louisville said that “too many workers would rather get home than get ahead”. While some junior workers assume that things are better for high-ranking executives and others like political appointees with large salaries, but on the contrary, the high-ranking executives and large salaries earners also have their own fears. They are also prone to seeing work as something to be dreaded, like death or taxes. The lackadaisical attitudes towards work by both high-ranking and lowranking workers has become a great obstacles to the development of the most of the third world countries, because poor quality work reduced productivity and declining services cripple economic growth of any nation. It will be recalled that after World War II, Japan was greatly affected and devastated. Many of her buildings and people had been obliterated by atomic bombs. The United States and other nations offered help to rebuild Japan. computer experts, agricultural specialists, scientists, teachers, business people etc. from different nations want to help Japanese reconstruct their country, but with a condition. They demanded that the Japanese will work more and earn less than workers in United States were paid and the Japanese agreed with the condition to work more and be paid less because they want to rebuild their country as soon as possible. Today Japan is a power to be reckoned with. Her might is based on economic, not military strength. Her weapon is money, just because people made the sacrifice of do all sort of jobs in order to develop their countries and up till date, Japanese are still working, working and working hard. In Africa, most especially in Nigeria, most of us want jobs, but we don’t want to work, we want the money, but we don’t to expend the energy and this is one of the reasons Nigeria is not progressing because nothing is as depressing and frustrating as having someone on a job who is not interested in working. People who want a job without the work are a detriment. These set of people are in different work force:, among the politicians, they are the type that will embezzle the money meant to develop their constituencies. Among the contractors, they are the type that will collect the money and refused to deliver the projects. Among the civil-servants, they are the type that will always absent and come late to the office. Among the lecturers, they are the type that will demand bribe before passing their students. Among the teachers, they are type that will not go to school and refused to cover the syllabus. Among the artisans, they are the type that will collect money from their customers and refused to do their job on time. Among the business people, they the type that will import/sell the substandard products at high prices. Among the students, they are the type who is always involved in examination malpractice to pass their examinations. Among the unemployed, they are the type that will sit down at home sleeping. These sets of people and many not

mentioned are more interested in being job keepers than workers. They are more concerned with receiving a paycheck than in doing good work; they want success without hard work, promotion without responsibility, result without the process, and honour without work. Too often, we allow the pain and perspiration of work to hide its blessings; we assume work is a necessary evil without looking for the good it brings. We always prefer rest, relaxation and holidays to a good work, but unfortunately, all these are false assumptions, because rest is only sweet after a good work. When God created the world, He worked for six days and rested for one day (Genesis: 2:2). He also instructed us to work six days and rest for one day (Exodus23:12). But our desire to work one day and rest six days has caused us backwardness and unhappiness. In this New Year and henceforth, Nigerians and other African citizens must change their orientation about work. We must see work as a gift from God and not as a burden. We must know that work is profitable and honourable and all hard work brings profit for the workers by allowing him to meet his financial needs. However, the reward of work is not always financial one; work reveals the hidden potentials in individual, builds self-esteem and it make workers to be healthier. The workers who feels they working hard and not being paid their worth should not be discouraged. They must keep working because nature has its way of rewarding the hard working workers. The young unemployed must not just fold their hands or be sleeping at home; they must think, move around and look for something positive they can do with their lives. Governments on its part must also encourage the young unemployed, empowering them financially and make the society favourable for the small scale industries. The working condition and remuneration of the workers must be improved to motivate the workers to put in their best and to discourage brain drain. Workers must also stop stealing from their bosses or government. Coming late to work, taking extra long lunch hours, going home early, collecting double salaries, converting company properties to personal one etc. are all acts that is tantamount to stealing which must be stopped. A study of history reveals that all great empires were built on the sweat and blood of a labour force, whether the energy of the workers was given voluntarily or through force. The civilization and development of the developed nations were built on the backs of subjugate people. Therefore, no matter how the workers are motivated, there must be good and hard work to achieve greatness. Governments must stop undermining the power of workers because the power of productivity is evident in the influence of Labour Unions. Unions control the workers, who control the productivity, and as a result, they can cripple a country, destroy an economy through industrial strike and other means. The leaders must know that they cannot run a country when people are not working, because you can’t force people to work. Governments can’t legislate obedience, nor can they force people to cooperate, when they are moving in a wrong direction. Workers will rebel if they feel they are working for nothing. Therefore it is high time we put a stop to an era of “monkey dey work, baboon dey chop”. •Ajiboye wrote in from Lagos, Nigeria

A Memorable Quote From A PDP Aspirant In The State Of Osun

“Recently, Chief Bola Ige came on radio here (Osogbo the state capital), to insult me and my family. THAT IS THE LAST TIME HE WOULD INSULT ME. He was beaten yesterday. The people of Ile-Ife beat him up and he was crying like a baby, as they removed his cap and glasses. If it had been at a political gathering, he will be dead by now..... In fact, what the people wanted to do was more than removing his glasses and cap....” -IYIOLA OMISORE. •Culled from Vanguard Newspaper.

FOR THE RECORDS JELILI ADESIYAN - MINISTERIAL - NOMINEE

OSUN DEFENDER Saturday, Febraury 1, 2014

President Goodluck Jonathan has just nominated Mr Jelili Adesiyan, the Education Commissioner under the illegal administration of former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Adesiyan was one of the alleged killers of the late Uncle Bola Ige, former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice. Below is a story published in Osun Defender Newspaper when the ministerial-nominee was the Education Commissioner in the State of Osun.

SARS Detains Oyinlola’s Commissioner Over Robbery HE aftermath of armed

T political thuggery employed by the embattled Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to rig the 2007 general elections in Osun State, has taken its toll on the state Commissioner for Education, Mr Jelili Adesiyan, as he was detained and grilled by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) for allegedly aiding and abetting criminals. Adesiyan was invited, interrogated and detained by officers of the SARS at their office at Oke-Baale, Osogbo the state capital, on June 3, 2009, on the allegation that he armed a dare-devil armed robbery gang with guns and other weapons. The interrogation of the commissioner came on the heels of key information given to the police by a widow called Iya Zukura in Modakeke, whose husband, (Mukaila) an armed robbery suspect, was killed in a gunduel that ensued between the police and some daredevil armed robbers. Iya Zukura, after the death of her husband, reportedly informed the police that her husband, Mukaila (Baba Zukura) was armed with guns and other weapons provided by Adesiyan during the 2007 general elections. OSUN DEFENDER gathered that Mukaila and other members of his gang – Aniyikaye, Rufus Oyediran a.k.a Arulogun and Waidi, who are currently at-large, were reportedly used to rig the April 14, governorship election in Odeomu. All members of the syndicate were allegedly armed with guns earlier provided by the Odeomuborn Commissioner for Education during the 2007 general elections. Investigation revealed that after the elections, the political thugs went into armed robbery, thereby terrorizing Odeomu community and other neighbouring towns. When the community could no longer bear the criminals activities of the four hoodlums, the leaders of the ancient town banished them from Odeomu and warned them from returning to the community. It was learnt that the four hoodlums were personal security aides of Adesiyan, who were mounting

surveillance on his residence at night, in the community. Mukaila reportedly relocated to Modakeke, while Arulogun, Waidi and Aniyikaye reportedly relocated to Ilesa, where they allegedly continued their armed robbery operations. OSUN DEFENDER further gathered that Mukaila was shot sometime in May, 2009, in Modakeke during a robbery operation. Arulogun was arrested and released by officers of the SARS in June. A police source disclosed to the medium that all the accomplices of the deceased were at-large, stressing that the police has mapped out strategy to

ambush the fleeing suspects including Arulogun, who was released. The medium learnt that the police went to the residence of Mukaila at Oke-Amola, Modakeke, to search his apartment, where the widow, Iya Zukura, was arrested and brought to SARS office in Osogbo. According to the police source, the widow disclosed to the police during interrogation that her widower was armed with guns provided by Jelili Adesiyan in 2007. Iya Zukura reportedly said her windower had been going around with the gun until he was gun down by the police. Sequel to the disclosure of the information by the deceased’s widow, the officers of the SARS

invited Adesiyan for interrogation. OSUN DEFENDER learnt that the commissioner arrived at SARS office around 3pm on Wednesday (June 3, 2009) and was grilled for some hours while his pair of shoes, telephone handset, cap and his top wear (Agbada) were reportedly seized. The medium learnt that Adesiyan confessed to have known the late Mukaila. The Oyinlola’s commissioner disclosed that he met the deceased at Agodi Prisons yard, Ibadan, Oyo State, when he was remanded over his alleged complicity in the death of the former Minister for Justice and AttorneyGeneral of the Federation, Chief Bola Ige, in 2002. It would be recalled that Adesiyan and some other PDP chieftains were accused of conspiring with other murder suspects to kill the former Yoruba leader. Osun State PDP chairman, Ademola Rasak, Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr Adekunle Alao (Lele), Adesiyan, former chairman, Ife–East Local Government Council Area of the State, Lambe Oyasope, were accused of complicity in the murder of Chief Ige. Others alleged of killing the former AGF are: a PDP serving Senator, Iyiola Omisore, his brother, Alani Omisore and one Lekan Oyediran. However, after the interrogation, it was learnt that Adesiyan was detained for seven hours before his release was influenced by the leadership of the state police command. Besides, one Alhaji Bakare Lasisi Akomola had earlier attempted to bail the commissioner but without success, as the officials of the SARS reportedly turned-down his request. Adesiyan denied the allegation that he armed the deceased and his group with guns, maintaining that he had no idea about the armed robbery operation carried out by Mukaila and his gang. It would however be recalled that Senator Omisore was tried and subsequently discharged and acquitted over the minister’s gruesome murder. •Culled from OSUN DEFENDER

OSUN DEFENDER Saturday, Febraury 1, 2014

www.osundefender.org

THE 6TH MOST-VISITED NEWSPAPER WEBSITE IN NIGERIA

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2014

the revenue generated THAT from petroleum industry, the mainstay of the Nigerian economy continues to dwindle is no longer news. What is however, troubling the minds of concerned Nigerians is when it would stop. In the first place, how safe is it for a country of over 160 million people to depend solely on oil revenue? The previous governments never cared to revolutionalise the sector, but were interested only in the revenue it yielded. The concomitant effect is that today, not only has the revenue derivable from that main source reduced drastically, the level of employment has also scaled down considerably. The erstwhile President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo was made to understand the full implication of an economy solely dependent on one major exporter earner, which the country does not have control over, but rather than find a better solution, he opted for the one imposed by the western world. In ordinary economic sense, the total revenue of a country can be boosted, if it generates revenue from a commodity, which is considered elastic. Elastic goods are such that when their price is reduced slightly, it generates high income occasioned by a high disproportionate demand for such goods. Petroleum is a necessity or an inelastic good, which means the price can be increased, but the demand may not necessarily increase. Besides, for a country that is the world’s fourth largest producer, Nigeria ought to have functional refineries. In addition to being able to control its supply into the market, Nigerians would have been employed to get them gainfully engaged. For over forty years, we have kept producing and selling the crude oil such that whenever there is excess supply (glut) in the international market, the price of crude oil falls drastically. It is in view of this that we ought to have developed the sector seriously to generate employment and value-added services for the country. The much-expected Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) has been in the national parliament for sometime now. Pristine politics has continued to dog the passage of the bill. According to experts, no

The Continuous Dwindling National Revenue

foreign investor would venture in a terrain that is uncertain and where needed materials and tools are not in the public domain. The government of Obasanjo only adopted the reductionist approach by always reviewing the price of petroleum products upward, which did not solve the problem. The best approach would have been a holistic approach of the sector and get everybody involved. Nigerians are keeping their fingers crossed to see whether the omnibus PIB, if finally passed, would solve all the challenges in the sector. Some Nigerians however, do not understand the twist in the sector as it relates to the continuous dwindling of national revenue. Official reasons adduced

for shortage of revenue is contingent upon the theft of the product in the creeks, where petroleum is produced and pipeline vandalisation. Rationalization of pipeline vandalisation should not flow, considering the fact that this is a time when the government of President Goodluck Jonathan has awarded contracts for the protection of oil pipelines to ex-militants, who are very familiar with the terrain. In spite of the huge contracts, the country continues to bleed from pipeline vandalisation. The implication of the whole scenario is that revenue due to states and local government council areas are not only coming late, they fall short of expectation. This definitely has affected the

implementation of different levels of government action plans. Interestingly, Nigerians see their leaders as being the stooges of the western imperialist institutions like International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. Available information has it that the Excess Crude Account (ECA) which stood at $8.65 billion as at the end of 2012 is now a paltry 2.5 billion dollars. Some senators recently accused the Minister of Finance, who doubles as the co-ordinator of the Economic Management Team (EMT), Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as an agent of the IMF implementing unpopular policies. The reality however, is that we have to look inward at sectors that have domino effect on employment. Manufacturing and agriculture are areas that have high potentials of engaging idle hands. With the reforms in the power sector, Nigeria is a very large market for the production of any good, which will get commensurate patronage. Agriculture too can get many people off the labour market. If people are productively engaged, they would be able to pay taxes and the internallygenerated revenue will increase. As at today, the telecommunication and banking industry many have good packages for their staffers, they are limited in terms of the number of people they can employ. The present government should show enough determination and vision to propel the economy in the right direction. It is not enough to embark on slogans, but plans must be backed by actions. The problem of the ruling PDP is compounded by people like the immediate-past National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, Chief Tony Anenih and the likes. We should not expect quality advice in tune will current realities to be unfolded. With due respect to the two distinguished elders stated above, they are accomplished individuals, who have made marks in life. It is however time to allow the young folks to lead, while they remain in the shadow. If the young generation can be made to take the lead, they would learn from their mistakes and improve upon it.
