Front Page Comment AREGBE ON THE MARCH AGAIN because he has visibly laid the emphasis on good governance as a way of achieving social welfare as well as social solidarity. This thrust is important. The process of development is predicted on it. To achieve socially cohesive society, Aregbe has had to put together the fiscal prudence
required to re-direct capital to build up the productive base. This is of enormous importance for the productive base to generate sustainable long–term employment. Long term sustainable employment is vital for individual self-esteem. It is also a veritable tool to fight social deviancy
at individual and community level. This translates into social solidarity at the level of society. The understanding of, and interpretation of the concept of society underpins Aregbe’s social programmes. This is why his programmes have been really transformative. CONTINUE ON Pg. 5

traditionalists, but rather for the people of the State of Osun. “The education of our children must be taken seriously, and we must not play pranks with it under any disguise to secure a better future for our state and the society at large.” He stated that the vision of his administration was to build an educational system that would produce great men and women in the society. Aregbesola added that his
administration has built 13 elementary schools, 20 middle schools and 13 high schools, with all totaling 46, which would be commissioned before the end of his administration’s first term in office. She said: “The school symbolises possibilities and that change is inevitable, despite the fact that some people are mischievous about the project, the government is right on top of the situation and we shall continue to work towards better future for our children. Other awards in Governor Aregbesola’s kitty include
DAILY INDEPENDENT but not limited to the OMATEK Good Governance Award; African Digital Award and Best Governor of the Year Award. It would also be recalled that Governor Aregbesola was recently invited to the United Kingdom to address the British parliament on his administration’s O’Meal programme, in which pupils
in elementary schools across the state are fed with nutritious meals, which has resulted into an astronomical increase in school enrolment across the state. Responding to the INL award, the Chairman of Canada Branch of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Bolaji Oladoyin stressed that he was less surprised by the numerous awards coming the governor’s way in view of the monumental development he has brought to bear on the state since his inauguration
in 2010. “I am least surprised that Governor Aregbesola is honoured by various groups and organisations, as he has brought monumental development to all spheres of governance in the state since his inauguration on 27th November, 2010. “The state of Osun has never had it so good since its creation in 1991,” Oladoyin emphasized.

ENATOR Babajide Omoworare, representing the Osun East (Ife/Ijesa) Senatorial District of the State of Osun at the National Assembly, has said that Governor Rauf Aregbesola does not need to worry about reelection for second term, going by his unprecedented landmark achievements.
According to Omoworare, the developmental projects being executed across the state by the Aregbesola administration are more than enough to win the August 9, 2014 governorship election for him. Omoworare stated this in a press statement issued by his Media Assistant, Comrade Tunde Dairo in applauding the governor on the commissioning of Baptist Central Elementary School Ilare, Ile-Ife on Tuesday. The senator, who expressed his satisfaction for Aregbesola’s performance, described the commissioning of the school as a timely programme to shut up detractors that are politically blinded to see the tremendous achievements of the governor. He said: “Without mincing words, my joy knows no bound whenever I recount the tremendous achievement of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola and the All Progressives Congress in the State of Osun and IleIfe in particular. “This is a reflection of a true Omoluabi; a passionate, visionary and focused leader, who sees no obstacle as insurmountable to take Osun to the desired height with his words as his bond.
Omowarere described what he called the revolution in the education sector through the school feeding programme, O’MEAL, modernization of school infrastructure, free uniform, Opon Imo and a host of other unique innovations, as right steps in the right direction to reposition the education sector in the State of Osun. He stressed: “Give a man education, and he is forever liberated. Education is the best legacy that anyone can have and the direction taken by Ogbeni is to make public education attractive to both the rich and the poor. We can boldly say we are returning to the golden days of Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s free education era in the Western Region.” He maintained that Aregbesola has equally scored pass mark in youth and agricultural development via OYES, road reengineering and construction, agricultural revolution in O’REAP, O’BEEF and O’ Birds. The senator stressed that the achievements were not only commendable, but worthy of emulation by both federal and other state governments, just as he assured the governor of undaunted support from the Ile-Ife people.

and the referendum organised by the commission, the Assembly would then consider the final passage of the Osun State Local Government Creation and Administration Bill 2014. Governor of the state, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, had, late last year, presented the bill before the Assembly, seeking the
approval of the House to create additional 27 local government council areas in the state. Meanwhile, the Assembly had passed into law, the OSSIEC Amendment Bill 2014, seeking to create the office of an Executive Secretary as the administrative head of the commission. Presenting the policy
thrust of the bill before its passage, the Leader of the House, Honourable Timothy Owoeye explained that the bill, when passed into law, would give the Executive Secretary the power to hold forth in the absence of members of the commission, who are mainly political appointees. Look at the size and responsibilities of the commissioners, Owoeye argued that there is need to create the office for the purpose of recordkeeping. In their separate submissions, Honourables Johnson Ojo (Ede South), Samson Fafiyebi (Obokun), Kamil Oyedele (Irepodun/Orolu), Adegboye Akintunde (Osogbo) and Dejo Bello (Ayedire) canvassed for the quick passage of the bill.
The lawmakers stated that an Executive Secretary, who will be a civil servant is needed in the commission to guide the political heads. They commended the governor for coming up with such bill to ensure check and balances in the commission. In his remark, the Speaker noted that the passage of the amendment bill will allow for synergy between members of the commission who are mainly political appointees and civil servants. Earlier, the Osun State Hotels and other Tourism Industry Enterprises Licencing Authority Establishment Bill 2014 had passed the first reading at the floor of the House. The bill was sponsored by the lawmaker representing Ife Central Constituency, Honourable Adetilewa Sijuwade.

Reclassification Of Schools, Good For Education - Lecturer By SHINAABUBAKAR
T
HE reclassification of public schools embarked upon by the Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola-led administration in the State of Osun has been described as necessary for revitalising public schools in the state. This was disclosed by an educationist and lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Mr Laolu Folorunsho, in an interview with journalists in his office. According to him, pupils of primaries five and six, who were moved out of elementary schools were moved into middle schools, which were formally the primary schools within the vicinity, saying the pupils automatically complete their JSS classes within the same structure. He added that the middle school also houses pupils of Junior Secondary Schools, while they move to a high school, which is also within the radius of their various communities. Folorunsho stressed that building new model schools becomes a necessity to repositioning education in the state, to this end; a conducive teachinglearning environment must be put in place for pupils and teachers.
He added that record has shown that government has pulled down over 4,000 dilapidated school structures across the state, saying if the present construction of schools is completed; it would accommodate 20,000 elementary pupils, about the same number at middle schools and 30,000 pupils at
high school. The lecturer counseled that government should not stop at that but should continue to build more schools; however, it should also ensure the massive rehabilitation of the existing structures, which are still conducive for learning. According to him, schools are among the best buildings in the communities in the past, but today are among the worst, assuring that the revolution in the education sector would ensure that the state competes academically
among the best globally. “The immediate-past administration in the state knew that new buildings for schools are necessary, considering that the existing ones have been there for decades, yet they lacked the will power to execute the noble idea”, he said. He also disclosed that the present structures being put up by government would remain there for years to come, signifying that the Aregbesola administration is building not just for today, but for the future generations.

We have noticed that many are those jostling for a slot on your delegate’s list. We therefore want to appeal to you to be circumspect in endorsing anyone as a delegate on your platform. altruistically patriotic Nigerians hold the view that the country would never achieve its touted potentials as the Giant of Africa unless it is restructured to reflect true political and fiscal federalism, as we had in the First Republic. “Since that structure was truncated by military fiat and replaced with a unitary structure, we have been talking about the good old days, while other countries look to a better future. To put it in another context, our yesterday was better than today and if nothing changes in terms of political and fiscal restructuring, our tomorrow may even be worse, with rising unemployment, poverty, extremism and other social vices. “The advantages of returning to a truly federal
structure are many. It would engender significant reduction in the cost of governance and this in turn would magically reduce corruption. Most importantly, it would unleash the inherent creative and development potentials of all federating units.
“It is also important to correct the misconception that ethnic jingoists are pushing for a National Conference in order to break up the country. Agitation for National Conference was actually started by foremost civil society activists like the late former President of Nigerian Bar Association and pioneer Chairman of Campaign for Democracy, Alao AkaBashorun, late Baba Omojola, Real Admiral
Ndubuisi Kanu, Comrade Shehu Sanni, and many others. “The idea of a National Conference is primarily to restructure a country in a way that is agreeable to all its peoples. If all delegates unite to pursue this purpose, then our constitutional activists would not have fought and laboured in vain. Please, consider their sweat and blood, consider the future of your children - born and unborn - and select your delegates circumspectly.” The group promised its readiness to work with all stakeholders “in a way that will empower this conference to restructure Nigeria for the benefit of all Nigerians.”
We Support Good Government - Osun NURTW By FRANCIS EZEDIUNO
T
HE Osun State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers Union (NURTW) has stated that as a foremost union that upholds peace at all levels, it is committed to good government and will stand by the administration of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola to make life easier for the people, adding that it would not oppose the good plans of government but rather support such plans. Alhaji Afolabi also stated that the NURTW being an effective organ of peace and good governance without political bias does not support any political party. “The NURTW does not support any political party but would support the government of the day. Towards this end, the union has consistently promoted the activities of the government in power”. While fielding questions from journalists, the NURTW chief stated that the Union was the custodian of peace in the state and they had helped the government of the day. “The NURTW in the State of Osun is the most disciplined union and as a result, any government that succeeds is as a result of the co-operation of the union”, he added. As a union, we pledge to always uphold the dignity of the NURTW and work in accordance with the union’s constitution.” The NURTW helsman
appreciated the government for providing 50 buses for the union which was obtained through a bank soft loan. He revealed that the one year comprehensive insurance on each of the vehicle and the payment of 20 per cent bank interest of the loan that would further enhance the capability of the union in discharging its responsibilities to its clients. Afolabi maintained that Osun NURTW was the first to establish war against motor park thuggery therefore with its membership strength of 250,000 spread across the 30 local governments and area office were effective partakers and contributors to the economy of the state and in the playing of key roles in the overall development of the state. “As Chairman of NURTW in the state, it is my duty to uphold the constitution of the union and ensure that members discharge their socio-economic duties in an atmosphere of peace, law and order. “To give effect to this, I led members of the union on a tour of all the local government councils last year to sensitize members on the need to support the government of the day.” In his contributions, a former state chairman of the union and now National Vice-President of the union, Alhaji Adegboyega Tomori, charged members not to go against the government of the state. He reminded members that they had gone beyond hooliganism and thuggery and were vital to the economy of the state and called for a symbiotic relationship between the union and the state government so as to allow for peace and development to take place and for the government to be favourably disposed to them.

I
want to use this opportunity to lay bare my mind on the bill for creation of additional local government council areas presented by the governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola to the State House of Assembly for approval.
There is no gainsaying the fact that local government is the closest arm of government to the people and any administration that deems it fit to create more local government council areas should be seen as one that is committed to the development at the grassroots. I could recollect that former Governor Adebisi Akande had
proposed to create additional local government council areas before the expiration of his tenure in 2003 due to his commitment to the development at the grassroots, but unfortunately, the
administration of Olagunsoye Oyinlola that came after him cancelled the whole process. However, now that the present administration of Aregbesola has sought the approval of the state parliament to create addition 27
local government council areas, it must be commended. Besides, there is the need to implore the state legislature to show proactiveness in the passage of the bill, so that the purpose for which it was proposed
see the bill approved, because that is what they have been waiting for. In considering the bill, however, the lawmaking body should not forget that there are grouses on the choice of coverage and locations of the proposed councils, which must be addressed before passing the bill into law. Also, the people of Osun should accept the local government wherever it is located in good faith, and remember that not all towns will be headquarters of those local government council areas.

ing but confused thoughts. The emphasis here is on confused thinking and not ideas. It is not the kind of thing that will mobilize let alone galvanize the electors. This is why the electorate is indifferent to the PDP in Osun. Indeed hostile might be a better word. In contradiction the response to the APC registration has been overwhelming. This shows that hope has been renewed through Aregbe’s intervention. In a few months time, Aregbe’s well merited mandate will be re-invalidated. The endorsement will be overwhelming and unprecedented. He has earned it. With a second term Osun would have been fully transformed under him. For the people of the state of Osun it will be a great leap forward.

INTERVIEW
OSUN DEFENDER Thursday, Febraury 20, 2014
Osun Is Working On Daily Basis - Oladejo OSDF: Can we meet you sir? OLADEJO: Thank you OSUN DEFENDER team. My name is Abiodun Oladejo, by the compacted fate of life; I was born in Aagba in Boripe Local Government Council Area of the State of Osun over 50 years ago. My father was a successful farmer. I attended a primary school in one of the remote areas in the state, after which I went to Kiriji Memorial College, Igbajo, which happens to be one of the oldest secondary schools, even in the then Western State before I proceeded to The Polytechnic in Ibadan, where I studied Mass communication. So, conveniently I can say that, I am a Journalist. I served my nation in the National Youth service Corps scheme in Calabar and I was the called PRO at that time. The unforeseen circumstances in Nigeria then, which are also rampant today, catapulted me to Austria in Europe about 23 years ago, where I was trying just like others to seek greener pasture. It was a turbulent experience, so to say, but when home was not providing what it should, then one needed to do what I did some years back. I did not regret going to Europe because I learnt a lot of lessons positively and negatively. And they were my parameters and yardsticks and templates that have been my bedrock holding my life till date. You see, Europe was built by people. Nigeria must also be built by people. Manna cannot fall from heaven. These are some of the reasons I decided to come home, to participate actively, politically and on business level and also to contribute my quota and to join hands with the government to alleviate the “suffering and smiling” of my people and to put succour to their pains. That is where I am today. OSDF: Why your choice of the progressive camp? OLADEJO: Let me draw from the well of Plato that said: “One of the penalties of people running away from the politics is that they will be led by the inferiors. Albert Einstein, a German philosopher, also corroborated with Plato theory, that the world cannot be destroyed by evil doers, but those who are urged, but did nothing. The corroborative effect of these wise sayings enveloped my thinking, my passion and my vision to go into politics. Yes, back to your question that why not the other political parties. You will agree with me that in America, we have the democrats and the republicans, to the left or to the right. I learnt from the progressive qualities of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo. My father was an active member of UPN and those of his siblings and as a matter of fact, some of them have newly joined the progressive APC. Progressive, as the name connotes, represents the interest of the generality of the people. It is not a politics of the few people, where some will be enjoying and wallowing in the ocean of affluence and many will be in abject poverty. So, these are some of the progressive legacies that Chief Obafemi Awolowo gave to us, built in us, and inspired us to practice. It is a synergy that has really worked well, especially in the South West Nigeria. Do you want to talk about education which is a progressive discovery of our ignorance? That is one of the reasons why I have come to join hands with my people to follow this line of emancipation. I am very happy to be in this group, I will stay in this group and I will continue to perform my right to the later. OSDF: As a Nigerian in Diaspora, what remarkable difference can you point out in the political system in Nigeria and in Europe? OLADEJO: Well, some people would say that, Rome was not built in a day. Yes, that is true! I think there is a sharp difference between the political participation, political remuneration and political ejaculation, depending on how you use the words. In terms of political mechanism, Europe has gone far ahead. What we are seeing today in Nigeria is what I sometimes call political Nazism; It does not augured well with the masses. That is why I am participating as a progressive member to bridge the gap. There is going to be changes and it must be done according to international standards, in order to achieve same level with the European and American
Abiodun Oladejo is a member of the Board of Rural Development, Water Resources and Infrastructure in the State of Osun and in this interview with MOSES MOBA of OSUN DEFENDER, he spoke extensively on the problems with the nation’s polity and Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s style of administration. Excerpts:of my dream to serve my people at the highest
•OLADEJO systems. There is a lot of work to be done. OSDF: What is your take on the nation’s political system? OLADEJO: The nation’s political system is a very nascent one. Sometimes, it could be very nauseating. I am mortified, petrified and stupefied for the present federal government of today in Nigeria. It is a government that is suffering from narcolepsy, a sleeping problem, because when people sleep a lot, then something is wrong somewhere. It is very, very unfortunate. Despite all the resources in this country, we are still struggling. I have been to many countries in Europe and even the US. I have discovered that one of the blessed countries is Nigeria. Why? Why? Why? Those are the questions in peoples’ minds. Why are we suffering? Infact, sometimes I see us as a people that are overfed. By nature, Nigeria is over-fed with potentialities. In Europe, the weather condition and the environment where I live with my family in Austria, the people live only on taxes and technologies. They do not have seaports, no mineral resources like Nigeria. In fact, the population of Austria is about 9 million. Nigeria has almost 200 million today. We do not have the accurate figure. The potentials we have today, we are not able to harmonize them. So who is to be blamed? Of course, we have to blame ourselves for the abundance. We have everything, but we have nothing. In Europe, many countries have few things, but have almost everything. It is an irony, it is an in paradox. There must be a voice against oppressive system in Nigeria. OSDF: What message do you have for the people of the state of Osun? OLADEJO: Very well, the State of Osun in the last three and a half year has been on what I call a salvable redemption being ushered by Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola. I met Governor Aregbesola when he was the Commissioner for Works in Lagos State. What I saw then in his office is still lingering in my memory today because Aregbesola is a paladin, who has empathy for the people and not like others that has apathy for the people. Some people come to you as a blessing, while others come as a lesson. He is a quintessential,
a celebrant and an activist. Today, in the State of Osun, Aregbesola is a blessing to the people. The progressive and the infrastructural development that is going on in the state are unprecedented and can also be felt by the deaf the blinds. This state has become a reconstruction and re engineering site. Aregbesola is a re-jigging, a sharp departure from the whole of others. In Nigeria, we need people who have sharp minds. And that is why today, the level of development in the State of Osun has been very gargantuan under the Ogbeni’s administration. The infrastructural development that the other party could not achieve for close to eighty years, in just three and a half years, Aregbesola has surpassed them. Probably, the other party would have needed 100 years to match Aregbesola’s three years achievements. I am not a praise singer, but what I have seen on the ground in the State of Osun is that Osun is working on daily basis. This is good for democracy and for the people of the state and Nigeria at large because others will borrow a leaf from the Ogbeni’s administration. OSDF:What is your take on Aregbesola’s style of administration? OLADEJO: He is an unusual person running an unusual government. I went to Lagos when he was the Commissioner for works then, to inform him of my ambition to represent my constituency at the House of Representatives and he said, Ok, you are in Europe, come over and let us work together. My federal constituency consists of Boripe, Ifelodun, Odo-Otin. Within one and a half years that I combed the nooks and crannies of the three LGAs, I was endorsed as their candidate during AD days. I went to the primaries, and was voted and nominated, but because of the political manipulation, I was robbed of the dream to be in Abuja then. The vision I saw in Aregbesola, even though, the other party, PDP, invited me to come over with the promise to give me something, I still stick till date with Ogbeni and the APC. Today, I am a member of one of the boards, Rural Development, Water Resources and Infrastructure. I will continue to play my roles actively and subsequently to get to the place
level. Interestingly today, PDP as a party is as dead as dodo. Nobody can revive it again. So, we are telling our people to vote for APC because APC is a party for the people. So, when people come to APC, they recognize that it is a progressive party working for the promotion of an egalitarian society. Nigerians must have relief come 2015. Progressives will take over the government at the centre and Nigeria will work again. OSDF: What are your observations if you are to compare between Oyinlola and Aregbesola’s administration? OLADEJO: You see, I believe in reality, I am not fetish and I do not want to praise-sing anybody. In fact, this is not a political talk. There is a sharp difference between Oyinlola’s seven and half years and Aregbesola’s three and a half years administrations respectively. The difference is clear. It is the same government that was there and could not perform or construct all the roads embarked upon by the Aregbesola’s administration. Take a look at the schools reclassification programme going on in the State of Osun. Aregbesola came up with O’YES innovation and today the Os have been spread into different groups. We have O’ meal, O’ reap, O’ Agric and so on. I think in the next few years, Aregbesola will have hundreds of Os for the benefit of our people in State of Osun. It is all about vision and we must live in an organised society. The society must be rearranged for the betterment of our people. It must be scientifically and electronically done. The world is changing technologically, and State of Osun cannot afford to be left behind. By the grace of God, we shall lead for others to follow. It is a critical job that this administration is handling and several toes are bound to be stepped upon. I can assure you that at the end of the day, everybody will be happy. So, the difference is enormous that cannot be compared. The developmental projects that Ogbeni is doing are alarming and encouraging. The APC States in the South West, including Edo State, are working and people can testify to this. It is not a party of angels, but they are better off than others. We are working assiduously to win the centre, so, that there will abundance for all. We do not want kleptocratic system of government. OSDF: Do you have any massage for the members of your constituency. OLADEJO: Yes! Let me start from the state. Two elections will be held in the state this year, and I want people to come out and vote en masse for APC because it is a progressive government. According to master Martin Luther King (Jnr.), you do not have to demand justice from the oppressors, but freedom must be demanded. This was the zeal that made Aregbesola to fight for three and a half years to reclaim his stolen mandate. He is a fighter, and we supported him. Therefore, I want the people of the State of Osun to support this government in this direction. As local government election is fastapproaching, as well as the gubernatorial election, I want my people to vote en mass for APC for the continuity of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola’s administration. Some people have arrogated themselves that they will rule for 60-100 years. Who knows tomorrow? They are talking like God. We thank God that today, the government of the State of Osun under the leadership of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, is a powerful and ordained government. I want my people in the state and in my constituency to support sterling performance of Ogbeni Aregbesola because he has given a midas touch to everything in the State of Osun. For instance, free education, free medical attention, free Opon Imo (Tablet Of Knowledge) for our children and so on and so forth. I also want Nigerians to vote en mass for APC in the presidential election come 2015 for a progressive change in the system.

Now That Schools Are Schools
T
HE arrival of a new child should ordinarily be a thing
of joy, not only for the lucky parents, but also for those around who love them and know the hazards and hardships of child-bearing. So, one who knows what it means for a child to be seated and learning in a pleasant environment cannot but rejoice with those state governments that are bending over backwards to provide first-class physical facilities for the children to learn in. Most people take for granted that governments are only doing what they need to do by providing functional, spacious and convenient facilities for the children at school. They hardly pause to think of the extreme cost of those facilities and the juggling of budgets that have to be done to meet the other needs of the parents of those children for good roads, health centers, safe drinking water, and to some extent work. I think if they do, very few of them will want to be State governors for whom we should really be sorry because of the stress they undergo just to make a dent on the state of hopelessnessin which most Nigerians have found themselves. Being blessed with a child is unfortunately just the beginning of many human problems. Children need food and clothing; they are helpless and so need to be attended to like kings most of the time. They also know how to yell when they lack anything! God bless them. Those governments that are shunning cheaper, less safe and effective school structures and are at the same time increasing the number of children going to school are not unaware of the need to ‘feed and clothe’ these children who need to be attended to properly. It is a heroic act and one of great commitment for anyone to take up the expensive challenge of putting up many purposebuilt learning institutions across a state as large as that of Ìcun, and providing at the same time food, uniform and instructional materials that are delivered at the cuttingedge of technology. Fortunately, these children have no reason to yell now because they are provided with almost everything that they need to enjoy schooling, learning, and securing their future. The quality and quantity of teachers have been assured; parents have also been relieved of the burden of paying for a thousand and one things for their children’s education; and children have not had it so good in Nigeria since independence. They should therefore guard what they have been given on a platter of gold jealously. A long time ago, I attended King’s College, Lagos. I taught at the Government College, Ibadan. I was Principal of Edo College, Benin City. As an inspector, I visited educational institutions from Warri to Ilaro. worked for. Handing the building over to the community has its downturn. Do the people feel committed enough to undertake the responsibility of keeping the school absolutely clean at all times? What if the will is there but the wherewithal to accomplish what is desired is not? These and other questions need to be asked and answered satisfactorily before any action is taken in that direction. Of the first three options, the most appealing is that the schools be handed to the LGA to maintain and guard vigilantly. That body, unlike communities, can be sanctioned, if it fails to perform this duty. Also, the budgetary obligations can be met by any LGA that is serious and responsible. And since the LGA is supposed to be the people’s government, the communities in which they are situated will be involved in one form or the other in their upkeep and proper use. Finally, a Schools Maintenance Board that will also have a Training School attached to it, to train and certify janitors at the highest level to upkeep schools, and public and private facilities could be established to do the work. Expertise would be developed and costs would be minimized by offering paid services to institutions and private companies. If properly managed it could be the answer to elongate the lives of these structures. We are witnessing history today. Let us ensure that those who made it possible are there tomorrow.

language, I found out that there are ready made answers to all given and yet to happen issues. Agreed, some of the axioms, truism, and paradoxical statements were generated from unverifiable superstitions arriving at from fables and innuendoes. But when a Yoruba elder says: “Iyan ogun odun a ma gbona felifeli” meaning (pounded yam prepared twenty ago could suddenly become hot, too hot to eat) those who do not understand the figurative meaning may justifiably disagree, because ordinarily, pounded yam does not have the capacity to be too hot when it is ready for dinning, let alone being kept for twenty years. However, the scenario at the floor of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria while one of the ministerial nominees from the State of Osun, Mr. Jelili Adesiyan aka Jalo, a controversial former Commissioner for Education appeared before the upper chamber has further reinforced the axiom that “a 20 year old pounded yam could actually be too hot to handle”, as the past visited him before the world, for what obtained there was aired live on national television. It was painful for his family, friends and associates, who had thought their man would sail through the ministerial screening without hitch, given the fact that his party men populated the majority of the lawmakers, but the past robbed on his present, and our Jalo wept like baby, because the evil of the past refused to recede, rather it turned a recurring decimal. Remember when the Cicero of Esa Oke, Chief Bola Ige, the late politician with outstanding credentials coupled with erudition and wizardry that made his sworn enemies to be green with envy, was murdered at dawn right inside his bedroom as a serving Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, some people, who had benefitted from his large heart, but turncoat and turned sworn political enemies were celebrating the gruesome death visited on the polyglot. Oh, the entire space of political spectrum of the South West Nigeria was thrown into turmoil, at that time, a fine lawmaker but with eccentrics in the state parliament, Odunayo Olagbaju was killed in Ile Ife very close to a police station by unknown assailants, but obviously politically motivated. So, the camp of the then embattled deputy governor, Iyiola Omisore in which Adesiyan was a chieftain felt the slain of Ige was a good retaliation of Olagbaju. Note, I did not insinuate that they killed Ige, but for rejoicing at the violent murder of the great man was an unforgivable sin on its own. Suddenly, a lyrics of war developed from the camp of Omisore, the then new entrant in the PDP, who could not simply wait for his estranged boss, Chief Bisi Akande to complete his two terms in office before he aspired to take over, that: “awa na l’Omisore, awa na l’Omisore, oun to mu Ibadan to fi l Adedibu’ awa na l’Omisore” meaning( we have Omisore in our camp, for Ibadan had Lamidi Adedibu, the infamous Amala and Gbegiri politicians based in Ibadan city, Oyo State.) Oh, it was a new lease of life for Adesiyan in company of his friends, Omisore inclusive, who was in Agodi
•ADESIYAN
Prison for over three years on the allegation that he had something to do with the death of Ige, as the PDP took over the rein of power, for Adesiyan became a Commissioner under Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and Omisore was said to have won senatorial election without campaigning from the prison, a notorious history that can only be recorded in a pariah state like Nigeria. Adesiyan, having returned from prison on a warped and manipulated wheel of justice that led to the sudden death of Ige’s wife, was appointed Commissioner, and he became lord of manor. He boys became regular guests of the special anti robbery squad in Osogbo, Osun state capital, the education sector of the state was left to rot to hell for crooked politicking. Odeomu, his native community would not forget his role in the 2007 compromised election, for scores of opposition politicians then were given the treatment of blood and iron. However, when Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola took over the mantle of leadership of the state, the reign of terror naturally died down, and the likes of Adesiyan, the weeping ministerial nominee methodically quietened into oblivion, we did not hear from him until he appeared before the upper chamber of the national parliament. Chief Bola Ige was in 2002 brutally assassinated, but those who celebrated his demise have since lost sleep, as sorrow and tears keep on trailing their path. That reminds me, Omisore, Adesiyan’s friend has been battling his own side ever since he has indicated interest to vie for the governorship of the State of Osun, because instead of him to campaign on what he could do to make a difference, the question that keeps resonating is: ‘Who killed Bola Ige?” certainly, 20 year old pounded yam could be too hot to handle. •Butika is the Press Secretary to the Speaker, State of Osun House of Assembly.

A Memorable Quote From A PDP Aspirant In The State Of Osun
“Recently, Chief Bola Ige came on radio here (Osogbo the state capital), to insult me and my family. THAT IS THE LAST TIME HE WOULD INSULT ME. He was beaten yesterday. The people of Ile-Ife beat him up and he was crying like a baby, as they removed his cap and glasses. If it had been at a political gathering, he will be dead by now..... In fact, what the people wanted to do was more than removing his glasses and cap....” -IYIOLA OMISORE. •Culled from Vanguard Newspaper.
