This was disclosed by the Permanent S e c r e t a r y, S t a t e Ministry of Health, Dr. Temitope Oladele, in a chat recently. Dr. Oladele added that the expired drugs were seized in order to curb selling such drugs for people’s consumption.

He further stated that the seized drugs have been accumulated since 2012 till now from various unregistered patent medicine vendors. The Permanent Secretary therefore, advised members of the public to patronize registered

pharmaceutical outlets for safety purposes and ignore activities of unregistered patent medicine vendors. Oxford Report And Nigeria’s Poverty ecently, the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHDI), 2014 reportedly put the percentage of Nigerians living in poverty at 43.3 percent. According to the Multi-dimensional Poverty Index (MPI) 2014, released on its website, 19.3 percent of the population remained vulnerable to poverty, while 25.3 percent of Nigerians live in severe poverty. The OPHDI is an economic research centre within the Oxford Department of International Development at the University of Oxford. Established in 2007, the centre aims to build and advance a more systematic methodological and economic framework for reducing multidimensional poverty grounded in peop, while inequality remained high. It said 68.0 percent and 84.5 percent of the Nigerian population lived below $1.25 per day and $2 per day respectively in 2010. The report further stated that the rural areas had the largest number of poor people at 57.5 percent, while 16.1 percent resided in urban areas. Pundits, while making reference to the Oxford poverty index, noted that several poverty alleviation initiatives of government had failed partly because they were palliative measures, which do not equip the supposed beneficiaries with relevant training and tools to get them out of poverty. They have noted that the way forward was for policy makers to empathise and have a feel of what poverty really is to enable them design effective poverty alleviation programmes. They argued that with respect to financial inclusion and poverty alleviation, the country’s economic growth had failed to translate into improvement in living standards because of the uneven distribution of wealth, as the rich get richer, while the poor becomes poorer. Earlier, the World Bank had revealed that 100 million Nigerians live in destitution. The revelation was made at the Bank’s programme portfolio review in Enugu, Nigeria. The Bigotry Against Aregbesola was greatly saddened to read the material written by Mr. Egheomhanre Emmanuel Eyieyien urging “The Remnants” to vote out the current Governor of Osun State Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola and vote in Senator Iyiola Omisore. I am also still somewhat puzzled as to how what appeared to be an opposition to a bond issue and other sundry allegations degenerated to the running down of the APC as an Islamic party, a propaganda tool notoriously deployed by the PDP through its various organs. Are we as Christians now being urged to support the PDP or what exactly is the message? Reason, is one of the most important contributions of the Gospel to development. From it emerge the practical concepts of fairness and justice for all, especially our enemies. Which is why lynching, even of an intellectual kind, is unacceptable. I am not an unbiased intervenor, I had the good fortune of serving in an AD/ACN government in Lagos State. The ACN is a major partner in the APC. I will come back to the PDP/APC issue presently. Also, I have known Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, governor of the State of Osun, since 1999. We served on the policy committees of the then newly-elected AD governor of Lagos State. He served in the infrastructure sub-committee and I, in the Justice sub-committee. I also served with him for 8 years in the government of Lagos State. He, as Commissioner for Works and I as Attorney General. I developed a close personal relationship with him. His early ideological belief was shaped by MarxistSocialist thinking, which probably influences his left-of-centre world view in governance. His first son, Kabir went to a university in Cuba on a scholarship. In 2005, when he graduated, only Rauf and I attended his graduation . He is a devout Muslim but liberal in his approach to other faiths. This is not unusual amongst the Yorubas largely because most families have both Muslim and Christian members and have always interacted without rancour. Of his six siblings, only one other is a Muslim. All the others are Christians. His sister, who is of the RCCG, is widowed (her husband died a Christian) her two sons have lived with Rauf for years, he insists that they must practice their father’s faith faithfully. They both attend the RCCG. He and I shared and still share a burden to provide honest, transparent, people-centered governance. He is a scrupulously honest person, as Commissioner for Works in Lagos State, he left office without a home and no financial comforts. I know, because aside from my personal and official interaction with him, I coordinated his legal team for the reclamation of his mandate for over three years. I know first-hand, his difficulties with sustaining his family, and a small staff for that period. Not surprisingly, no one can accuse him in the State of Osun of corruption. He is just not wired that way. Indeed, in keeping with that commitment to serve the people with complete fidelity, his major projects have been solely directed at alleviating the suffering and deprivation of his people. The hiring of, now 40,000 unemployed graduates, the provision of free balanced meals for all primary school children, provision of free uniforms, the provision of tablet computers for senior secondary school students containing all their textbooks, past JAMB questions etc., monthly stipends to the elderly; all of these in a state that is the poorest in federal allocations and currently gets N2.6 billion monthly, a 40 percent reduction from 2013, courtesy of the Federal Government. Mr. Eyieyien perhaps was not aware that even the N10 billion sukuk bond was purely for the building of 24 model state-of-the-art schools, most of which are now completed. The Wole Soyinka-led Osun Education Summit recommended the replacement of the completely broken school infrastructure in Osun with schools capable of accommodating 1000 students with modern laboratories, classrooms, power and sports facilities. The idea was to use economies of scale to benefit the largest number of students. When Mr. Eyieyien describes him as “Sheikh”, it is clearly to give the impression that he is an Islamic fundamentalist. The facts on the man completely belie this. First, as Commissioner for Works in Lagos State, he built the chapel at the State House Marina. Pastor Adeboye, at the opening,

In addition, the largest ministries are headed by Christians- Ministries of Finance, Justice, Education, Health, Environment , Agriculture, Physical Planning and Youth and Sports . The Legislature (House of Assembly), which came into office after he won back his mandate in court in November 2010, has a majority of Christian members; 18 Christians and 8 Muslims. Everyone knows that at that level, if the governor does not support your nomination by the party, your ambitions are dead in the water. The State Judiciary is headed by a Christian, who he appointed although he had preferred and proposed a judge from Lagos, Justice Olubunmi Oyewole, also a non-Muslim. Of over 30 new Permanent Secretaries appointed by him, 22 are Christians. If the majority of your cabinet, (including your Attorney-General), your Legislature, Judiciary and top echelon of your civil service are Christians, how can we in truth say that such a person has an Islamisation agenda? Surely the least a “Sheikh” with an Islamisation agenda should do to achieve his objective is to populate the structure that can achieve that objective with Muslims! It is also entirely false that he patronizes or uses “TAAWUN” guards for his security. It is common knowledge that he hardly even uses any security at all, except for a couple of SSS men, his monthly LIFE WALKS , where he walks alongside his people for kilometres without any significant security cordon was commended recently by a former governor in the South East. It is incredible what prejudice can do to us. Everyone in Osun knows that the state was nicknamed “State of the Living Spring” in reference to the Osun River after which the state is named. I agree that it may have served the politics of religion better not to take the bond, but it is a fairer judgment of his motives, knowing him, that this was borne out of his desire to serve his people well. The 24 mega schools with state-of -the-art facilities is a quantum leap in education for the majority of children of the poor, who before now schooled in what the Soyinka committee saw as scandalous. The alternative was not to build the schools. When a man, who is doing right by the poor and deprived people he governs, is being condemned by those of us who are called to serve the poor, the sick, the naked, and the hungry, then it is fair to ask what the values in governance we really intend to promote are? In any event, the alternative is Senator Iyiola Omisore, whose antecedents we ought, to put it delicately, be cautious to associate with. A problem with uncritically accepting as useful advice this viciously anti-APC propaganda, is that it throws the baby out with the bath water. So we are now expected to reject the landmark achievements in Lagos, in Ogun (the huge infrastructural developments), Oyo ( which for the first time most admit is making real progress) , Edo, and Ekiti ( where almost everyone agrees the governor did a good job but Fayose understood stomach infrastructure better!) Or now Kano or Rivers (where a real rail service is about to begin; Lagos is also about to complete a rail service amongst other exemplary achievements )! It is also false that the APC’s new executive reserved its top positions for Muslims! The Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, is a Christian, the Deputy National Chairman (South) Engineer Segun Oni is a Christian, so are the National Organizing Secretary, Senator Osita Izunaso, Deputy National Secretary, Honourable Orji Ugofa and Chief Pius Akinyelure, the Vice Chairman of the South West. For what it is worth, there are 22 Muslims and 21 Christians in the APC National Executive Committee. Regarding the rather thinly veiled ‘support the PDP/ JONATHAN’ message, it is incredible that we are invited to ignore the cynical manner that our President Goodluck Jonathan uses Christianity and the church to further his political ambitions. Why are we being urged to support a PDP/Jonathan bid again? The platform has largely on account of its tragic failure to perform, decided to exploit Nigeria’s religious fault lines in the most cynical manner to win support, in the process, he continues to divide Nigeria in by the far most extreme manner in our history. I have worked with many brethren since 2002 on issues around Islamization

Or that General Buhari remains the one Head of State who was able to defeat an extremist insurgency, the Maitatsine. How can we fail to see that the incredible corruption, incompetence, poverty of 2/3 of our people after almost seven years of the present government is unsupportable? How is it that Diezani’s use of N10 billion to run her private jet (the same amount of money for the building of 24 mega schools in Osun!) and the complete silence of the President on this travesty does not lead to calling for him to be voted out in 2015? So the allegation of the missing or unaccounted for $20.8 billion with 110 million desperately poor, should be dismissed as pure propaganda? So it doesn’t make a difference to us that under the PDP, Nigeria has fallen behind in every human development indicator? 55,000 women dying yearly of maternal-related ailments. As you know, it is our tradition in the State of Osun to celebrate our people, especially our children regularly. The philosophy behind this is very simple. Government is about the people and a responsible government would always make people the centre of attention at all times. Here in the state, our administration places the highest priority on the welfare and happiness of our people. We believe that this is the only way we can truly say we have a democracy. Therefore, bringing together our children from different socio-economic background on occasions such as this would further inculcate in them high sense of belonging. It would oil the spirit of unity and enhance peace and joy in our state. I wish to use this opportunity to plead with our parents and guardians to continue to improve on the care and attention being given to the children. This act of retail business is illegal under the Nigerian petroleum act as it is not known to law.You must be aware that this kind of dangerous business is very common in Osogbo,Ile-Ife and Ilesha. I ask that you kindly, as a matter of urgency, place a ban on the sale of cooking gas from retail outlets using gas cylinders some of which are outdated and expired. Every individual and bulk users of cooking gas should be encouraged to fill their gas cylinders at certified cooking gas filling plants under the most safety standards in compliance with regulations. Many of these retailers may say they are looking for money and going about their businesses to earn a living, but you cannot be earning a living putting innocent lives in danger. They can come together and set up a cooking gas filling plant in compliance with regulations and safety procedures and earn a decent living. I am aware that after the sad incident in Ondo State, the state government has placed an embargo on the retail stores. My fear now is that some of these people may find their way to the State of Osun to continue their illegal and dangerous business. Sir, you must act before it is too late; we must prevent this impending danger from occurring as the consequences might be too grief to bear as most of these retails stores are right in the mist of populated areas where people live. Whenever anyone does something for you, be grateful and let them know it. Give out compliments generously: There’s usually an awkward silence when you’re stuck in a room full of strangers or waiting in a queue with a stranger. Instead of staring at the floor, find something you like about the other person and compliment him/her on it. Not only will it make him/ her feel good, it just might kick off a conversation with a new friend. Surprise your neighbour by telling him or her how pretty he/she looks today. Te l l y o u r a s s i s t a n t how truly clever he/she is and mean it. Praise any subordinate who’s stayed late or done anything extra on the job honestly. Notice those things. Think of all the people who are lonely, isolated or just in need of company, motivation, material things you don’t need: soldiers fighting, homeless people on the street, people in prisons and detentions, kids in motherless homes. You can ask around on their whereabouts or make search online. Pray for those that need your prayers more than you do. Those that are in one pain or the other. Those that are are going through pains, hurts heartbreak or storm. Pray for those that are lost, struggling to find their way back. Do you ever see homeless people and feel overwhelmed by your inability to make a difference? Even if you can’t save them all, you can do a lot with one small act. When buying things for yourself or loved ones, you can buy few extras for those that cannot afford it. Instead of through away excess foods, clothes and the likes, you can pack them in appealing ways and give to those that are in need of it. Share a little wealth around: Financing charitable works, giving out scholarships to students that cannot afford adequate education, paying for hospital bills of patients with financial troubles, donating items to orphanage and less

privileged, supporting and establishing those that have dreams but incapable of support themselves monetarily. Forgive somebody: You’d be amazed at the ripple effect an ounce of forgiveness can have in your life and in the lives of others. Unburden yourself of the past and think kind thoughts again about that person. Share a smile. When meeting a new person, or even chatting with an old one, express joy. Show that you’re happy to be with them, and that they make you happy. Happiness is contagious. Be merely seeing you smile, you can unconsciously put a smile on a stranger’s face. If you meet someone grumpy and frowning, give them your smile. Make them lighten up if you can. Just give give them a reason to forget their troubles for a while. Don’t see it as their bad mood reflecting negatively on you; instead, make it about how you can help them to feel better. enultimate Thursday, delegates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) converged at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos to elect General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) as the flagbearer of the party. The presidential primary conducted by the APC was certainly one of the best in recent times. It took delegates over twenty hours to return the party’s flag bearer in the primary election. Buhari had contested for the presidency three times in the past on the ticket of the All Nigeria’s Peoples Party (ANPP) and the Congress of Progressive Change (CPC) but lost. To his detractors, he is a perennial contestant for the presidency and should not be taken serious. However, the fact that most delegates embraced his choice is pregnant with a lot of meanings. The Daura-Katsina State-born retired Army General is not new to Nigerians. He has held strategic offices in the past among which were the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 3rd Armoured Division in Jos, Plateau State. Buhari was also a Minister for Petroleum Resources before becoming the Military Head of State as a result of the military putsch that terminated the government of President Shehu Shagari in December, 1983. The APC standard bearer was also the chairman of Petroleum Trust Fund during the General Sani Abacha-led government. GMB, as he is fondly called by his admirers, is integrity personified, very humble to a fault and very honest. He is also a factual person, who calls situation as it is and not to colour it. Unfortunately, the attributes mentioned of him above is a rare commodity among Nigerian politicians. To be able to sail through the presidential primaries, he had to access loan from his bank to pay for the Expression of Interest and Nomination forms. For all anybody cares, many politicians have seen politics not as a selfless service to humanity as posited by the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, but an investment, which should be recouped in a very short time. So, for a Nigerian, who has traversed the political ladder to the top as Head of State and there is no corruption linkage with him, is a serious plus to him. The duo of Buhari and Idiagbon lived by example and they tolerated no nonsense. They were hard on politicians and like all military governments, rule of law was put in abeyance. They fought corruption and were seen to be fighting corruption. The Buhari junta set aside one week in 1984 for the change of national currency which many thought was not possible but they never extended the date. As an undergraduate, I was a victim because most people were hard up and could not believe that it was possible to set a target and keep to it. carried out by the fifth columnists holding strategic positions in the government. Today, the Buhari government has been vindicated. The major challenge bedeviling our society now is corruption yet the government of President Goodluck Jonathan seems helpless. The anti-Buhari elements would swing into action very soon. They will label him all sorts of names, but the truth of the matter is that he is incorruptible and ready to wage serious war against crimes militating against our development. They will call him religious bigot; some will refer to him as a brutal dictator who put all politicians in jail regardless of their misdemeanor. But we have got to a point in our political history, where like the Israelites in Egypt, we need a leader than would deliver us. For our current milieu, the person that can do it is GMB. If a Nigerian, particularly a top politician keeps to time, it is considered abnormal. The trend runs through every facet of our lives. Laws are meant to be obeyed by the common people, for the top shots in the society, they can break them with reckless abandon. This explains why if you see a Nigerian like GMB, who has taken appointments at different levels, culminating in being a Head of State and still live a spartan life, then one begins to wonder really if he is a Nigerian. In Nigeria, today to have an audience with your elected councilor is very difficult not to talk of an honourable member of the State House of Assembly or that of the House of Representatives. For a Senator or a Governor, it is like a camel passing through the proverbial eye of a needle. For the top shots of the society, it is always us and them. T h e r e a r e , h o w e v e r, f e w achievers, who are stickler to time on occasions; the late Professor Olikoye Ransome Kuti and our own Justice Bola Babalakin. Babalakin, a retired Jurist of the Supreme Court, exhibited that trait recently, when we attended an Islamic programme together at Royal Spring Hotel, Osogbo. The retired justice of the Supreme Court was an invited guest, but some few minutes to the commencement, Mr Oyesiku Adelaku, as the compere, was emphatic that Babalakin would be there before the programme
