THE TRAIL

FLOODWATER DANGER

Welcome to the Belle-Étoile educational trail ! Built in 2016, the BelleÉtoile suspension bridge provides safe passage over the Sauflaz River on the trail connecting the Bonavau and Rossetan alpine pastures.

Alpine rivers downstream of dams, water intakes and power plants can be dangerous. Water purges and releases occur regularly, especially in summer, causing sudden and unpredictable fluctuations in water levels and/or flooding. Islets, gravel shoals and riverbanks can become submerged with no warning !

This educational trail consists of five informational panels with in-depth information on the local mountains, glacial retreat, hydroelectric energy production, the vast network of caves under the Susanfe Valley, and the Sauflaz River with its spectacular periodic flooding. The complete trail is 8 km long and has a 500-metre altitude gain. It should take about 3 hours to complete, not counting the time it takes to read the panels !

Walkers, anglers, campers and canyoners should exercise extreme caution in and around the riverbeds, even when they are dry, as there is a real risk of being carried away by a sudden flood. This danger increases significantly in the river gorges. Warning signs clearly indicate hazardous locations.

These purges and releases are necessary for the removal of silt and sediment in ponds and sand pits, and for the drainage of surplus waters caused by melting glaciers or heavy rains.
