Led by coach Ken Barnhill, the Panther hockey team is really proud of the year they have had finishing with a record of 8 wins and 7 losses. “We have a lot of leadership on the team and players know how to lead a team very well,” Coach Ken Barnhill said. This team has a lot of veteran players that have started very young and are finishing up their season strong as a panther. Goalie senior Justin Lewis and Alt. Coach Gibson has led this years hoop squad to another successful year recently beating the Alton Red Birds in the Panther Dome 77-72. Though their record may say other wise, this season has been no walk in the park. 4-4 in the

conference, the panthers are No.5 in the Southwestern Conference. With two tournament titles under their belts, and plenty of season left, the Panthers have little to worry about for the remaining year.

This past weekend, boys’ bowling placed 4th out of 32 teams in the IHSA State kameronjohnson@othstoday. Tournament. “This has been one of our best years yet,” said senior Ryan Greynolds reflecting on his last year as an OTHS bowler. 11 wins and only 3 losses during the season should say enough for how well the bowling team did blowing away the competition with ease. Sophomore Josh Brown, who averaged a score of 213, played a major factor in the Panthers’ success all of the way to state. Placing ahead of Alton in the state tournament highlighted the Panthers’ fantastic season. Alton was the Senior Billy Goodman bowls a strike in a match against Collinsville. Boys’ wrestling has done a complete 180 this year after last season’s rebuilding season. Standing at a strong 116 on top in the conference, the Panthers look forward to taking on state as a whole. Senior Bryan Pierson has contributed to the Panthers success with 28 wins. Though injuries have played a negative impact this year, there is no doubt the Panthers will shine in the weeks to come.

Last year, the girls did not qualify for state. Despite their fall, they were confident in improving their game and coming back to the competition with a desire to win it all. This year, the girls have the perfect combination of new and old players that managed to get them into the top spot entering sectionals, which take place on Feb. 4.

Boys’ swimming has been spectacu-

lar this season. Yet to find an opponent capable to match their speed, endurance, and strength, the Panthers are undefeated and are not showing any signs of slowing down. Each day, the boys endure late night practices with coaches Eddy and Buehler to harness their technique. Techniques these swimmers have mastered will make them one of the most lethal teams in Illinois. Stacked with talent from veterans senior Mark Williams, freshman Sean Workman, and first year swimmer Mike Slaughter. The Panthers hope to make a big splash in this years state tournament. Gender roles: stereotypes or conditioning? Catherine Maness

catherinemaness@othstoday.com “The most important thing is that people be themselves, do what they want and act how they feel, without the pressures of our society shaping them into what they aren’t..”

If you don’t know, gender roles are learned behaviors, attitudes and norms that are considered appropriate for individuals, depending on only gender. These roles can differ according to age, culture and family upbringing. We start learning these behaviors and attitudes as soon as we’re born. From the moment we come into this world, we’re placed in either a blue blanket or a pink blanket. We grow up thinking we should either like princesses and flowers or action figures and trucks. We wear dresses and skirts or suits and ties. Without saying which gender likes flowers or actions figures, or wears dresses or suits, you already know which role goes to which gender because we all have that common background of growing up with them. And while it is true that many, if not most, little girls like princesses and flowers, and most little boys prefer trucks and action figures, gender roles are enforced when they are crossed or deviated from. What happens when a teenage girl wears “boy” clothes and cuts her hair short? She is called a lesbian, dyke, or is mistaken for a boy- depending on her surrounding culture. Maybe she is even made fun of, secluded or looked down upon. And a boy who prefers tighter pants or likes romance movies is called gay or fag. While it is proven that homosexual men have higher estrogen levels, and gay women have higher testosterone levels than average, gender roles have nothing to do with sexual orientation. Because someone is gay does not mean they will or should act, dress or talk like the opposite sex. This is a common misconception, or stereotype, that has nothing to do with the character of a person. With a mass perspective, deviated gender roles are looked down upon. But why is this? If a woman would rather not shave her legs, why is it that if a man sees her at the gym wearing shorts, he is disgusted, but when he looks down at his own legs he has no problem with how hairy they are? His legs are “supposed” to be hairy, and

hers are “supposed” to be smooth. The answer is, because of us. Our society, as a whole and as individual groups, decide what we should and shouldn’t do. For some, “because my society says so” is good enough reason for them to shape themselves, and in some cases, change themselves and make themselves uncomfortable. While our society isn’t wrong in recognizing differences between boys a girls, I believe it is wrong in enforcing roles upon individuals who don’t want them. For me, and many people I know and respect, it isn’t enough of a reason for me to change or alter myself. How many times have women not wanted to wear make up, do their hair or wear uncomfortable clothing, but done it regardless because they want to be seen as a woman? While there are more factors behind why women do these things, (not all of them negative- if you want to wear make up and look good, go ahead!) a large portion would rather wear jeans instead of skirts. How many gym memberships are constituted by men wanting to become more “manly” because they’ve become insecure in the way they are perceived, or because some society-shaped person looked down on them? Our commonalities are ever adapting to opinions and behaviors. It is unreliable, and it seems like we can never win. Society is unreliable and ever changing. 100 years ago, if someone saw a woman smoking a cigarette they could easily condemn it as a wrong thing, and say it was un lady-like, or that only men should smoke, even though it’s just as bad for women’s bodies as it is men’s. Now, it’s not thought about twice when one sees a woman smoking. Men should do this, women should do that. If masses of people’s opinions are so unreliable, why not do what you want? If a guy wants to work out because he likes the idea of being able to be protective of himself and his loved ones- go for it. If the same guy wants to shave his legs because he prefers them to be smooth, why not? Gender roles are unstable and, at times, unreasonable. Who are we to say what people can and can’t do? There is more to people than what roles and behaviors we associate with them because of one factor of themselves. The most important thing is that people be themselves, do what they want and act how they feel, without the pressures of our society shaping them into what they aren’t.

Senioritis; the new rising epidemic Madeline Crowe

madelinecrowe@othstoday.com “I don’t know about you, but I don’t want my last high school memories to be of me whining.”

Every year I hear the same story from different people: the story of “senioritis.” In case you have been living under a rock your entire high school career, senioritis is the raging epidemic common among 12th graders across the nation. Side-effects range from laziness to impatience to grumpiness and has become a serious concern with our teachers. As a senior, I feel as though I have earned the right to confront this issue. And, as a student who has to listen to the constant complaining of unmotivated peers, I would like to say that it’s getting really old. We get it! You’re tired of school. But ask yourself this one question for me, is that any different from any other year. It doesn’t matter how old you are, what grade you’re in, or what school you go to, our view on summer is the same--we can’t wait for it to get here. This next year should be a year of enjoyment.

It should be a year of spending time with friends, taking classes that you enjoy, and preparing yourself for college. If you have a hard time getting on track this last semester, it’ll be even harder for you when you become a freshman in college. So try and keep your head on straight so that you can succeed in the years to come. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want my last high school memories to be of me whining. I want to remember all the crazy nights with my friends. I want to be able to think back and know that I did everything that I wanted to before graduation. I want to be able to look back to my senior homecoming pep-rally and remember how we lost the spirit stick to the freshman and how at the next pep-rally did a “Senior Black-out” and laugh about it. I want to be able to smile about all the silly times that I had with my boyfriend. I know that when I look back in twenty years, I’ll make fun of my fashion sense and say to myself, “What was I thinking!?” I enjoy being able to think back and admire how far I’ve come, and how much I’ve learned from my high school experiences. There are lots of things that I would like to remember, but most importantly I don’t want to remember how bitter I was about being “stuck” in school.

PS3, X-Box, Wii: what is the best Donald Eckerman

donaldeckerman@othstoday.com “After just a glance at the tech specs even the average person would be able to tell that the PlayStation is far superior in almost every category.”

In the modern battle for gaming dominance, three heavy hitting electronic powerhouses enter the ring the Wii, the Xbox 360, and the PlayStation 3, but only one can emerge as champion and the choice should be clear. Ever since the release of the Xbox 360 in late 2005 it has held a dear spot in the hearts of gamers across the world and that spot was held unrivaled for an entire year until the holiday season of 2006 when both the Wii and the PlayStation 3 were released. The problem that both Sony (PS3) and Nintendo (Wii) faced is that most people who would spend money on a new gaming console had already bought and pledged their nerdy allegiance to Microsoft and their Xbox. Remember when your mom would always say “If your friends all jumped off a bridge would you jump too?” As it turns out, the answer is yes. Everyone and their brother already had an Xbox and no one wanted to be the only kid that had a PlayStation. That is exactly how Microsoft tricked the entire planet into buying their console, that at the time and to this day, is far from the best on the market. After just a glance at the tech specs even the average person would be able to tell that the PlayStation is far superior in almost every category. Each PS3 is equipped with a blue ray player that allows it to play 3D movies and games not to mention that it has the ability to play all movies in a beautifully painted HD that

Mycal Hurley

mycalhurley@othstoday.com “With all the perks of Microsoft’s console, it’s clear that the Xbox 360 trumps both the Playstation 3 and the Wii in many aspects and is a better package overall.”

Disclaimer: Now before I start on this rant I’d like to make it known that I have all three consoles and love them each for their own reason’s. This article simply states the reasons why I like the Xbox 360 and how they stack against the other consoles. Now without further ado... Coming in strong for the 2012 year is the console that has reigned champion for its six year life span: Xbox 360. With 1.7 million units sold in December and more than 66 million units worldwide, Xbox 360 has a right to be considered the best console this generation. With great exclusive titles and franchises, like Halo, Gears of War, Forza Motorsport and Fable, those who buy an Xbox have a wide variety of games to choose from that will keep them satisfied for months to come. On November 4, 2010, Microsoft released the Kinect peripheral, previously named Project Natal, and created a new meaning to motion controls. Now in the beginning of 2012, over 18 million Kinect’s have been shipped to retailers around the world. Instead of using technology, such as a device to be held in the player’s hand to read their movements, Microsoft was able to create hardware that would track these movements, but without users needing a physical device to track those movements. This new device sparked many consumers interest and drastically raised Microsoft’s earnings around the 2011 Thanksgiving season. Microsoft’s advancement in this technology far exceeded that of the Playstation’s Move and the Wii’s motion control and will most likely dictate where the two other consoles will go with their motion control peripherals. Along with their astounding number of units sold and their large success with the Kinect,

makes the Xbox and Wii look like someone drew on your TV in crayon. If you’re more concerned about the speed of your console on the Internet, the PlayStation leaves all the rest in the dust with a processing speed that is 4x faster than that of the Xbox and 13x faster than than the Wii’s top speeds. Aside from all of the “under the hood” aspects of these next gen consoles, the PlayStation beats them out in conveniences and secondary costs. Both the Xbox and the Wii’s controllers require batteries or buying rechargeable battery packs that can cost around $20 extra per controller. The PlayStation controllers come standard with the ability to recharge them by simply plugging them into the console. The final nail in the Xbox’s coffin is the fact that access to Xbox live requires you to pay for a subscription whereas online multi-player on the PlayStation is completely free. As if all of that wasn’t enough, the PlayStation is the only one that can say that it is helping Stanford University cure cancer through a program called Folding@Home. Folding@Home is a program that uses the extra computing power of PS3s around the world to help map a process called protein folding. To map this process on a regular computer would typically take decades now with the help of Folding@ Home scientists are finding better treatments everyday for diseases like Cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and countless others.

the main reason for Microsoft’s outstanding success is their online accessibility. Xbox Live holds the largest online community of the three systems, with more than 40 million Xbox Live users in the beginning of 2011, far more than its competitor, the Playstation 3. Xbox Live allows friends and new people online to communicate with each other through in-game chat and Microsoft’s party system, which allows players to talk to each other while playing different games. Unfortunately for Sony and their consumers, no such technology has been implemented into the Playstation Network and few games have the quality of voice chat that Microsoft has. With Xbox Live’s ability to upgrade its features through online updates, Microsoft looks to become the source for all things media by integrating television, Internet and a plethora of other applications. This ranges from Netflix, YouTube and Hulu to ESPN, Last FM and even the introduction of live television in future updates. When considering the security when giving out information to register for Microsoft’s online gaming service, Xbox Live consumers can guarantee that their information will be safe, with no large scale hacking taking place, a large contrast from Sony’s, Playstation 3, and its recent security mishap. In 2012, Microsoft enthusiasts will expect to see new games like Minecraft, Halo 4, Alan Wake: American Nightmare and Fable: The Journey, along with new IP’s and an announcement at E3 of a new generation console. With all the perks of Microsoft’s console, it’s clear that the Xbox 360 trumps both the Playstation 3 and the Wii in many aspects and is a better package overall. So if you’re looking for a console to buy: the 360’s where it’s at.

Ivan Leonard

ivanleonard@othstoday.com “The Wii is also superior to its opponents because of its simplicity.”

In the video game world, there is constant arguing over which game system is dominant. The Wii exceeds the other due to its user friendly set up and simplicity. Unlike Xbox, which picks and chooses what games it wants in its next Gen system, all of Gamecube’s library is accessible on the Wii, along with classic games dating back to the original Nintendo. While it may lack the graphics and big name games of the Xbox and PlayStation 3 it makes up with a wider variety of games for sports fans, hardcore Nintendo fans, and party games, while the fans of Microsoft and Sony seem to focus solely on Kill streaks and Nuke-tactics. The Wii is also superior to its opponents because of its simplicity. Unlike its rivals, which rely on weird controls and the memorization of button combos, the Wii is easy for the casual gamer to pick up, understand,

3

and enjoy no matter the game. It’s also much easier to enjoy with friends if you’re not a hardcore fan of best-selling games such as Call of Duty, NBA 2k, and Gears of War. Xbox 360 claims it’s the best console available but having to pay $50 just to enjoy online features can put a dent in your wallet . They also brag about games found only on Xbox that can often be found at a cheaper price on the P.C. But the nickel and dime company that is Microsoft doesn’t stop there as the 360 also doesn’t come with wireless internet, so for those that don’t have wired Internet, be prepared to shell out at least another $50 on top of the $50 for live. And to top it all off, the chances of your beloved Xbox messing up or even dying early are higher than other consoles due to a bad cooling system and problems in the system which makes the purchase of an Xbox a real boom or bust system. The PlayStation countered the Wii with Touch Sensitive buttons but they are much too sensitive as opposed to the Wii-mote. PlayStation boasts about their system’s superiority but their systems can still fall prey to the Yellow Light of death which happens when a gamer plays to much or in an area with little ventilation. They also have update issues that will cause software or hardware problems that means more downloading and installing time for even the unaffected ones. Their Netflix app is also clunky and badly ran as those wanting to enjoy this feature must use a disc instead of simply using it on the system. Competitive, but simple easy gameplay and classic characters has always been Nintendo’s calling card which has led to over 75 million consoles and a firm grip on the gaming industry. I expect the Wii U to continue the trend of Nintendo dominance when it’s released.

Does high school really change you? Dianiche Baxtron

dianichebaxtron@othstoday.com “I think some people let high school change them, for the better or sometimes the worst.”

Months and months before we actually enter high school, we were told about how hard it will be, that high school will be the most fun of our teenage years. We’re also told that while in high school we will mature and grow into the fine citizens our parents hope for.

People already in high school will tell little 8th graders that their friendships won’t last because we all change. I think some people let high school change them, for the better or sometimes the worst. In some way I do believe that high school changes all of us. Because in these quick four years we all go through different things and they have an (Tyler Klaus/ The Prowler) effect on our behavior

and thoughts.

The schooling and classes don’t change a person I don’t think. From being a freshmen to graduation I know that we all change. Most (not all, sadly) of us will have matured and put those childish things behind us, getting ready for the real adult world. A lot of us will have physically changed and look like

a completely different person. Emotionally and mentally we will have all changed, all depending on how life went during these short four years. I remember being in middle school, and most of my classmates at Fulton. How a majority of us acted, then when I moved away and came back last year, it was different. I couldn’t believe how many people had changed. I think that changing is apart of high school, wether its just how we look or changes on how we view life.

Modern day Titanic; the sinking of the Costa Concordia

Friday, January 13th, proved decidedly unlucky kaleyjohnson@othstoday.com for the 4,200 passengers aboard the Costa Concordia when the Italian cruise ship’s hull was sliced open and sunk off the western coast of Italy. The massive cruise ship, three times the size of the Titanic, hit a series of treacherous rocks on Friday, January 13th. Rescue crews are still searching for survivors, and the current count for missing persons is tolled at nineteen. Fifteen passengers have been confirmed dead. Currently, there are numerous hot topics flooding the United States, especially now that the 2012 elections are well under way. Without a doubt, the number one debate focuses on the economy; more specifically, the unemployment rate. With politicians and citizens fussing over this issue more than any other, it seems apparent that our country is obviously deep in financial trouble. When you focus on the big picture, however, and on the financial situation of other nations, we might not seem so bad off in comparison. For example, while we’re concerning ourselves with our 8.5% unemployment rate, Spain is battling a shocking 22.9% of their population without jobs, and almost half of Haitian citizens are jobless this year with a 40.60%

unemployment rate. It’s also hard to complain about 8 out of 100 citizens struggling for jobs here in the U.S. when a record-breaking 95% are jobless in Zimbabwe. Meanwhile, however, while these nations are losing their battles with unemployment, other countries are apparently coming out the victor over the globally poor economy. For instance, Qatar is currently leading with the lowest unemployment rate in the world; .50%. In the European Union, Austria (4%), Luxembourg (4.9%), and the Netherlands(4.9%) are also fairly successful in the employment area. Overall, while our unemployment rate is not the lowest in the world, it’s also definitely not the highest, and we should take a look around the globe before we completely horrify ourselves with our 8.5%.

close to the shore, and the captain’s judgment in handling the emergency appears to have not followed standard Costa procedures...” Others, however, claim the crash was due to a technical error, uncharted rocks, or a severe miscalculation on

the maps that were given to the captain. The captain is under arrest for manslaughter, shipwreck, and abandoning a ship when passengers were still on board, according to Italian prosecutors. He was questioned on the 17th, and his answers are currently being pored over in search for clues into what really happened to cause the catastrophe. A law suit is currently being filed against Costa and parent company, Carnival Corp. It has not officially been filed yet, but so far the suit has tolled up to 125,000 euros, or $160,000, per passenger. It is clear the suit will be substantial, and is estimated to include billions of dollars to compensate for psychological and/or physical damage done to the passengers.

French journalist killed in American-Iranian Syrian uprising sentenced to death for supposed espionage

On Wednesday, January 12th, award winning kaleyjohnson@othstoday.com French journalist Gilles Jacquier was killed in a violent Syrian uprising while reporting

on a pro-government rally in the country. Jacquier was taking a government authorized tour of Syria when the rally was suddenly attacked by a mortar shell from an unknown source. Eight Syrians were also killed in the attack. Jacquier’s death marks the first western journalistic death in the ten-month-long violence in Syria, and the implications of this death are a concern to both France as well as the rest of the western world. Human rights activists responded to the attack by claiming that the Syrian government is not doing enough to prevent the violent outbreaks in the country. The shell attack came the day after President Bashar Al-Assad made a rousing speech to progovernment rallies, claiming that the current protests in Syria are the result of a conspiracy. Many high ranking officials around the world, however, are skeptical of this claim. While France is pushing Syria to fully investigate the attacks, Syrian officials are currently pinning the attack on an anti-government terrorist organization. Despite Syria blaming the attacks on terrorism, a Syrian opposition group stated that the attack was carried out by Syrian security forces. After further investigation, France has still not come to a definite conclusion about who is responsible for Jacquier’s death. Thierry Thuillier, however, as the lead manager of France Televisions, says that there are “disturbing” elements surrounding the situation, and claims that the Syrian government is not providing satisfying answers to their questions.

A Tehran court has sentenced American-Iranian andreavernier@othstoday.com man Amir Mirzai Hekmati to death after he was accused of being a spy. Hekmati, 28, is a U.S. born former marine who has links with the CIA. Iranian Ministry of Information accused him of being trained by the U.S. intelligence agency in Iraq and Afghanistan, and Iranian agents arrested him at the U.S.-run Bagram military base. American officials say these claims are false and demand Hekmati’s immediate release. According to an interview with his father in December, Hekmati had left four months earlier to visit his grandparents. He was reportedly arrested in August, but Iran just recently confirmed his capture in December. In court, the prosecution mainly relied on a video of Hekmati confessing to being a Central Intelligence Agency operative sent to infiltrate Iran’s intelligence. “We believe that any confession he may have made was clearly coerced,” says State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland. Hekmati’s trial ended January 3rd, and he has 20 days to appeal his sentence.

Teachers on top: Wilson, Riley, Albers and Kelly Gerian Summers

Here at OTHS we are known for our astonishgeriansummers@othstoday.com ing teachers that have the skills to rival a superhero. Among these teachers we are proud to award Matthew Wilson with Teacher of the month. Mr. Wilson, teaching for 16 years, earned his bachelors in chemistry and physics for secondary education and masters in instructional technology at Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville. He has now been a part of the OTHS staff for 12 years and has earned a great reputation. Wilson was the first born of his parents. He turned out to be a success as his parents always suspected. High school was not the prime of Wilson’s life. It was almost the total opposite. Living in such a small town Wilson was not much involved in his very small (Tyler Klaus/ The Prowler) high school, simply because there was not much to do. He has always loved teaching and every student who leaves his classroom is impacted positively. He has a different teaching style, but it tends to be very effective. He interacts with his students and makes his teachings relative. What makes him unique is the enjoyable environment that he creates while teaching, that allows students to learn and be themselves. Junior McKenzie Maxwell says, “ In Wilson’s class I feel like more than just another student, he teaches on a personal level and helps me on my specific problems”. Wilson, who thinks the best part of teaching is far more than what any grade can express, enjoys seeing students mature and grow up to reach their full potential. Though we know he’s a great teacher he also has a hidden talent. “I’m a fine cook, if I may say myself,” with chuckles as he reveled. Besides being a teacher, he is a full time father and husband and he enjoys it very much. He also commits a lot of time to Jujitsu, a Japanese combat fighting. “I also like long walks on the beach and picking daisies,” he added sarcastically. Wilson is not only a great teacher, he is a well rounded individual. He’s much like a hero without a cape. He continues year after year to contribute to students success. In our book he receives a golden star of excellence and a round of applause.

Diane Riley is one of the teachers here at OTHS that geriansummers@othstoday.com every student gets to know. She’s an outgoing teacher and has open personality. Her unique, one-on-one personal contact with her students, is a reason Ms. Riley is our January Teacher of the Month. Located in the lower in end of the 200 hall, Riley brightens every students day that comes by. Teaching at OTHS for over a decade, Riley was not always dedicated to this profession. Born in Moses Lake, WA, and raised in St. Louis. She attended Roosevelt High School in St. Louis. Out of her ten siblings born she was third. She blames the fact of having ten siblings for being the outgoing person she is today. Not knowing her true calling was teaching Riley went through the beginning of her life as a model. Very soon though the unstable life of hers became too much. With all the traveling and instability in her life; Riley knew this is not what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. She followed the quote by an unknown other , “Do something you love.” She was soon left with a question that could be fulfilled with millions of answers. The question being, what to do with the rest of her life. At the age of 28, Riley decided to go to college. She was skeptical on what to major in, so once she graduated with her bachelors she went back for more education. Once realizing that she wanted to do some- Tyler Klaus/ The Prowler) thing with reading and being on the center stage she decided to major in literature and minor education she realized that teaching the future was what she wanted to do. She is on her 17th year at OTHS. She teaches Honors Expos 1, American Literature, Contemporary Themes of Literature, so there is plenty of opportunities to have Riley as a teacher. What makes her a great teacher is her acceptance of every student and her attempt to see every point of view and true love for teaching. Her favorite time while teaching was hard to come up with. She soon came up with as story. “Once I was going over some notes on the overhead projector (before power point) and I had a folder in my hand with what I wanted to say. Well, I am running around the room like a crazy person trying to find the folder. The kids finally started to laugh. I had placed the folder on the projector to block part of the document so it couldn’t be seen while I was lecturing. The kids knew it was there all along”.

Coach Keith Albers was chosen as one of four January, teachers of the month by The

Prowler staff. Keith Albers was born in Breese, Illinois and attended Mater Dei High School in Breese. While at Mater Dei he played football and baseball and was a member of Scholar Bowl. After high school Mr. Albers went to Knox College in Galesberg Illinois. “As an undergrad, I studied Education and History (BA),” he said, “I have also studied for separate Masters Degrees in Education and Sociology in graduate school. I have completed (Tyler Klaus/ The Prowler) a Doctorate in Christian Education. The sociology degree is what I am currently working on at SLU... I love being a student, and I love studying things that interest me both formally and informally.” A reason why Mr. Albers became a teacher is because of the impact his teachers had on him. even though he likes his career, this wasn’t his first choice. When asked what he wanted to be growing up he said. “A pilot, a fighter pilot... But you can’t have vision problems.” Government and sociology are the two classes that Albers teaches at OTHS. He chose to come to O’Fallon because he likes the area. He also talked about how great his students are and that OTHS’ faculty is full of good people to work with. “I want students to expand how they think about society,” Mr. Albers commented about what he hopes to get through to his students. “The moment when a new way of thinking about society becomes clear to my students would be a generic example of my favorite moment.” Outside of teaching, Albers enjoys spending time with his family, attending sport events, and reading.

For the month on January, The Prowler chose Mrs. Kelly is one of our teachers of the

month. On June 3, in Maryville, Illinois Kate Kelly was born as the second child to her parents. Mrs. Kelly attended Triad High School in Troy, Illinois. While in high school, she was wellknown and was continuously active throughout the years. She played varsity basketball and softball. She was editor of the schools yearbook and newspaper. Kelly was also a member of various clubs including: National Honors Society, Knights Council, French Club, and Science Club. After high school, she attended Lewis and Clark Community College for two years, then went on to the University of Illinois. When asked why she became a teacher she said, “I really don’t know why... It was always on my mind as a kid... Felt like I was meant to do this.” OTHS was one of two (Tyler Klaus/ The Prowler) schools Kelly sent an application to. She had an interview and was hired. There was no reason to go anywhere else. In the 800 hall you can find Mrs. Kelly teaching Algebra 1 and Algebra 2. “I fell in love with math my senior year taking AP Calculus,” Kelly said, “During other classes I was always helping other students and at night helping teammates with their math homework. The other students would tell me they liked the way how I would explain concepts. After my senior math class, I knew I wanted to get a degree in Math.” There was silence when Kelly was asked what her favorite teaching moment was, “...Something great happens everyday... Usually something funny.” Outside of teaching, Kelly still enjoys a game of softball. She also said that the majority of her time is spent with her family.

Students on the prowl: January s OTHS Students of the Month Every month two bright and outstanding sekatealialilly@othstoday.com niors are honored with the title Student of the Month. This January, the earth friendly Kaylee Schmitz and leader Ian Wilson stood out from the crowd. From their uniqueness to their vast amount of talents they certainly deserve this honor. Wilson, January’s first student of the month, intends to major in Computer Engineering. The colleges he’s applied for and still awaiting responses from are Stanford University, Cal Poly, and the University of California-Berkley. He has already been accepted into the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. Wilson is currently an Alternate captain for the O’Fallon ice hockey team and shows his love even more for the sport by staying active in the Hockey Fan Club. He also plays on the Lacrosse team and participates in Players with a Passion. In the past, Ian showed more of his devotion by joining the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Sports are not his only (Tyler Klaus/ The Prowler) passion; Wilson is Assistant Chief Mechanical Officer of the Robotics Team, a member of the math team, and has been inducted into both the National Honors Society and the Spanish Honors Society. When it comes to clubs he’s given his time to SADD, Camera Club and Spanish Club as well. Aside from his activities within the school, Wilson shows his huge heart through volunteer work and other charity events outside of OTHS. He ran in the Eagle Scout 5k run that benefited the Shriners Burns Hospital, participated in Secret Santa, kindly donated his time as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army and lastly was a Rotary Youth Leadership Camp Counselor. Wilson admits that his best quality is his “leadership skills and Good work ethic.” Wilson also maturely says, “I believe it is important to lead by example. It is important to be fair to all and create common goals.” He also gives credit to Mr. Curry, Mr. Henry

Katealia Lilly

and Mr. Sahr for challenging and teaching him valuable lessons. He admits, “I will enjoy not having to trek from the Weber lot in the cold month of January,” but he also says, “It is an honor to be selected as student of the moth at a school that has as many esteemed students as OTHS.” Kaylee Schmitz, January’s second Student of the Month, differs from Wilson greatly on the topic of her future. She plans to attend Montana State University and earn a degree in Land Rehabilitation. However, Schmitz also has a passion for sports just like Wilson and supports our school year after year. She’s participated in four seasons of cross country and is about to start her fourth season for track and field. She is also on the Athletic Leadership Council. Aside from running, Schmitz also participates in Lifesavers, German Club and is an active part of the National Honors Society. In the past she was part of the Geology Club and played cello for the school string orchestra before the class was cut two years ago. It also seems that caring and a devotion to helping others in this world is a common factor for these two SOTM. Schmitz collects goods for charities, volunteers her time at camps for younger girls, and participates in fundraisers for her Girl Scout troop and their extended trips. She also dedicates her time to helping at a Senior Living Center during the weekend. Her best quality is her endurance. The teachers that she’s been influenced the most by are Mr. Turkington and Mrs. Johnson. She says, “They have both been great teachers because they have taught me about their subjects, but also about life.” Lastly she states, “Being Student of the Month just gives me a bit more confidence about myself and how I’ve done so far as a student.” These very dedicated, wholesome, inspiring and caring students do OTHS proud and obviously have a long glorious future ahead of them.

Tips for applying for scholarships

Emma Gatewood

- Take a peremmagatewood@othstoday.com sonal inventory Some colleges and universities have scholarships for certain areas of study. For example, pharmacy or engineering. If you get the scholarship, though, and you decide to change majors, you may lose the scholarship so be sure to read the fine print. - What have I participated in? Other than just sports, some schools or organizations offer scholarships for extracurriculars like band or Model UN. Every school is different so make sure to research (Tyler Klaus/The Prowler) what they offer. Check websites like the collegeboard.com or even talk to the club sponsor to if they know of any. - How much effort am I willing to put in? Frequently, scholarship applications will require an essay or even a presentation. Make sure to check before you decide to apply. If you do decide, see if you can have a teacher read over your essay. This is a sure way to make sure it is

not only grammatically correct but makes sense to someone other than you. - Check out Senior Scholarships Sources on the school web site There are lots of local scholarships through places like the Rotary or the Knights of Columbus. - Check Deadlines There are some scholarships that have a deadline for applying, so make sure you look. There are some deadlines as early as Feb. 15. - Look into different organizations In addition to schools and local groups there are many other organizations that offer scholarships. Some religious institutions also offer scholarships so check with your religious institution, they may be able to help. There are also many scholarships available for children or grandchildren of military veterans.

O Fallon music students go to IMEA All- State Festival The O’Fallon music program is renowned through jasonnelson@othstoday.com the state as being one of the best. As of late, a select group of individuals from our school participated in the IMEA All-State Festival. This is a huge deal for not only the individuals, but for the school’s music program as a whole. The more students from our school that are chosen, the greater the recognition the program receives and the stronger it grows. New from last year, thirteen talented students played their part in this year’s festival. These students are the best of the best and were

specially selected from the entire state after passing through regionals and fierce judgment from their district. When compared to sports, the IMEA Fest is just as prestigious as making state. Danielle Long, one of this year’s participants said, “You know that, when you sit in your chair and start rehearsal, the people sitting on either side of you have dedicated themselves to the same level of excellence that you have, and it’s really gratifying to be surrounded with so many other great musicians.” “Everyone,” she continues, “is there for the same purpose of making music, and it’s absolutely glorious.”

Advice column: high school romance My high school career is almost over and I have yet to meet a significant other who I can take to homecoming or prom. My best friend and I go often, and I think my friend and I would hit it off really well. But, I would hate to lose them as a friend if we split. Sincerely, A Spit ball of Fire High school is a place to develop intensely personal relationships. If your love life seems dull, try putting yourself on the market. The first step to branching out in your social life is to introduce yourself to people you would normally stray away from. When searching for a relationship, be aware of all the risks that come along with doing so. Uncertainty and mystery lurks (Tyler Klaus/ The Prowler) around every corner as you proceed to pass, clouding your better judgement of others as well as yourself. Never agree to enter a relationship for the feeling of security or belonging. Patience is a virtue. Take advantage of the friendships you have already developed. True love that you have been yearning for probably is one your closest friends. Fortunately, you have more than plenty of time to develop intimate relationships because you’re still only in high school. Before finding someone to share your life with, take care of yourself be sure you are happy

with what you see in the mirror each day. A relationship cannot last if there is no sense of self pride. That will bring a rainy day to anyone’s parade, which will then hinder any development of a more serious connection with that person. Many people become so engulfed in finding their soulmate that they tend to forget to ask themselves what makes them happy. Your significant other should meet your standards mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally. Try and be realistic when setting your standards, though, we all cannot have the ideal cream of the crop, but that is not what love is. Love is unique and hard to find, thus making love so special. Once you find that person, you will truly appreciate him or her. If you feel a connection with your friend who seems pretty close to you, I’d cautiously advise you to try it out. Only do so if your feelings are genuine; do not use your friend as a scapegoat. Life is full of surprises, but you will never how many await you if you never take a chance.

POP CULTURE SHOWDOWN Generations Edition! Hello, welcome to the POP CULTURE SHOWmadelinecrowe@othstoday.com DOWN! And I’m your host, Maddy Crowe. Today our competing opponents will be U.S. History teacher, Mr. Mike Day, and Senior Julian Thomas. Now this time around is a little bit different. Now we will be asking the students questions about the teacher’s generation in pop culture and vise-versa. Before we begin, is there anything you would like to say?

The Thomas broke the tie with a 1 to 0 lead!

Madeline Crowe

“As Julian’s history teacher, I have no fear of his knowledge of history.” says Day. “I’m pretty sure this guy has NO idea about anything that has happened since WWII. He needs to go get on the computer box and search the world wide web for events past his last history lesson! Let’s go big Mr. Day! #bow” expressesThomas. Okay, well enough with the smack talk, and on with the games! First question goes to Thomas. 1. What was the #1 movie in the year 1989, featuring Harrison Ford? Thomas: “Oh jeez, I don’t know. Star Wars? Haha!” I’m sorry Julian, but you are wrong. The correct answer was Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. To Day now: 1. What iconic couple got married in April, and had the wedding of the century? Day: “Uhm, let’s see...oh! I know, The Kardashians!” Unfortunately, no, you are not correct. The correct answer was Prince William and Kate Middleton. The current score is 0 to 0. This question goes to Thomas: 2. What song by Young M.C. was released in the year of 1989? Thomas: “Oh that was the “Bust a Move” guy, wasn’t it!? I know my music! So “Bust a Move!” Yes, you are correct! To Day: 2. What was the name of the second album that Lady Gaga dropped in May? Day: “Oh wow, I have no idea...Meat?” Haha, unfortunately, that is not the correct answer, the answer we were looking for was Born This Way.

To Thomas: 3. What wall in Germany was torn down in 1989? Thomas: “I lived in Germany, if I didn’t know this I would smack myself. The Berlin Wall! Duh!” To Day: 3. What was the #1 Ranked Box Office hit of 2011? Day: “Hmmm, oh that’s easy, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows.” Good job! Point for Day! The new score is 2 to 1, with Thomas still in the lead. To Thomas: 4. What video-gaming system popular in 1989? Thomas: “Huh, I’m thinkin’ Nintendo” That’s correct! You thought right! To Day: 4. What social network has taken Facebook by storm? Day:“That would be Twitter.” Wow, call you butter, because you’re on a roll! The updated score is 3 to 2, Thomas still on top. To Thomas: 5. What hairstyle was huge throughout the 80’s and featured “business in the front, and party in the back”? Thomas: “Would that be the mullet?” Why, yes it would be! To Day: 5. What movie series is infamous for the many screaming/crying tween fans and stars Robert Pattinson? Day:”Oh man, I know that one, but I don’t...that’s the vampire one...” Okay, after much deliberating, we, the officials, decided to give you that one... Thomas wins with the score of 4 to 3! Good job everyone! Thank you for tuning into this edition of POP CULTURE SHOWDOWN!!!!!

Returning host, Ricky Gervais, is well known for his criticism and “Necessary Roughness.” In an interview for Today , only days before the ceremony, Ricky explains why he refuses to apologize for his comments last year. “What am I doing? I’m coming up with jokes and annoying people,” he said. “I think offense is taken, not given. If you don’t let yourself be offended, you’re not offended. “ Octavia Spencer from, The Help had the room laughing with her statement, “I’m sorry, y’all. I love you, but I have to kick these shoes off. We lasted but we’re done. … Christian Loubutin, I love you, but when you have this much weight you’ve got to … ooh, give us a bit more platform.” Kicking off the evening in style, celebs were able to give the fans a night to remember across the red carpet. Sparkles, and glam blinded the cameras, as each star announced their dress, hair and makeup stylist. As wishes came true that night, many of Hollywood’s stars were on the

edge of their seat counting down the seconds before they were announced winners, or losers. One by one they proudly accepted their award, and gave a thank you speech. Twitter became the center of opinions and true feelings about the awards that night, especially as Katy Perry filled her twitter with her thoughts about Madonna and Octavia Spencer; who won Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role. “YES girl! So deserved!!!” she wrote. So why exactly were these particular stars and movies chosen? According to Thom Geier, senior editor at Entertainment Weekly, told ABCNews. com, “The Hollywood Foreign Press has three biases: ingenues or young stars, foreign stars and more stars,” “They want the starriest cast possible for their awards show.”

You’re Not Kablamo: Genre: Pop punk, party punk History: YNK started in 2009 when Patrick Cook, or Patrick Cadaver as his fans know him, vocals, met Alex Knicker, guitarist ,in a bathroom at a show in Millstadt the December before the band officially started. They agreed to play together, and it went on from there. Mike Crotty, drummer, joined the band after a long process. Cook was working on a full band project. Crotty was the last of five drummers Cook tried to work with, and it “jumped off instantly” from there, as Cook puts it. The band now holds five members. Austin Luberda, keyboards, Kevin Feuerhelm, bass, Knicker, Cook, Crotty and Blake Starr, guitar. Method: “I feel like we didn’t start a band wanting to fit into a specific style of genre...we ended up just not fitting into one,” says Cook. The band shares little common music interest, but they all take influence from Rancid and all love a good punk show. Cook states, “I would describe the music as energetic. Our songs have a sense of emergency to them in order to sound good because that’s how we play.” They record under IWASBORNSTOKED Records, which they founded themselves with the help of Crotty. Discography: The band has a number of albums and EP’s (Extended Play), their most resent being the Screams EP and a full length titled “Kid Shoulders”. The band hopes to record and release their upcoming album, which they’re currently writing and recording, as soon as possible. The band has played multiple shows at ITR venue and usually plays at basement shows and local venues. Details, show dates, and music samples and downloads can be found on facebook, myspace, www.emusic.com, . All stickers, shirts, and Cd’s are available at local shows. You’ll like them if you like: New Found Glory, Rise Against, Blink 182, Finix TX. You’re Not Kablamo’s sound is energetic, lively, and fun. There’s no such thing as a wallflower when these boys play. The lyrics and music can relate to anyone in the room, and you can’t help but dance in anyway you know how.

They have all been friends for years and, “eventually we just became

what we are now,” says Starr. The members are bonded by the belief in radical self-expression.z Method: CSA has a strict DIY (Do It Yourself ) method. They plan shows by ear. “When we hear about a show we usually just ask whoever is in charge if we can jump on the set, and that’s how we do shows,” says Damman. The band members are also united in their vegan based diet and political expressiveness. Discography: The band is currently recording a 6 track EP and continue to do local shows whether it be basement shows, house shows, or local venues. See their facebook page for details and dates. You’ll like them if you like: Ruiner, How We Are, Comeback Kid. Corporate States of America’s sound is heavy, energetic and expressive. If you’re not nodding along and thinking about the lyrics, you’re moshing and screaming along side them.

Main Attraction (M.A.):

Genre: Hip Hop, Rap History: It all started when DJ Nicholson had an idea. With a mic, inspiration and friends Brandon Greer, Deubin Baker (senior) and Toree Dilworth, they all started recording and it turned into a group. They started throwing ideas around and jamming regularly. The friends have played shows at Cicero’s in St. Louis and have a show coming up on February 2 at Fubar, St. Louis. Discography: The band has recorded three mix tapes. You can get in touch with the sound by following @MainAttraction on Twitter, on facebook, or on Datpiff.com. You’ll like them if you like: Travis Porter, Tyga, Lil Wayne.

Pinky Extended:

Genre: 60s influenced rock, Indie. History: About a year ago, senior Eleka Smith started playing around with friends senior Katie Carr, drums, senior Jack White, guitar, and junior Jake Cook, bass. It started when Smith’s piano teacher suggested she formally get a band together. Due to a tough schedule, band members White, Carr, and Cook had to quit. Senior Tommy Evans replaced Carr on drums, and Megan Wiegert, sophomore, joined with back up vocals, guitar, and keyboard while Smith took lead vocals and keyboard. Discography: The band is recording their first album next month. They’ve played a couple shows at a local St. Louis lounge called FK Photo. They’re working on set lists to record and send into local venues to book more shows. Method: The band has a DIY method, and often work with Smith’s piano instructor. “We just love to play music. It’s just something that we have to do. I think music is really important to us,” says Smith.

POPs Nightclub and Concert Venue:

Pops has been around for 29 years now and ranked top three concert venues in St. Louis. It’s generally a 21 and up club that is open 24/7 but along with that there is a huge center room with a stage for all different types of concerts. These concerts mainly allow all ages and with a simple 2 dollar minor surcharge and a big, bold, black x on your hand, if you’re underage, you can get in. The rules and guidelines are quite simple for this venue. Shows typically start at seven and have to be over by midnight. If you are a minor, there is no re-entry into a show once you leave and there is heavy security to protect and to stop underage drinking. Pops is a place for people who enjoy live alternative, hard core and screaming kind of music. There are no seats for you to sit on and enjoy the band. There is however a large pit where you can jump up and down, mosh and flail around to your heart’s desire. Aside from just watching the band, Pops also has a game room with pool tables, air hockey and all video games you can entertain yourself with. Tickets can be purchased online or even at Pops for a solid, set price. Not across the river, Pops is located at 401 Monsiento Avenue in Sauget Illinois. You can also go to their website www.Popsrocks.com to view the concert calendar or contact them.

The Pageant:

The Pageant was built from the ground up and opened their doors in 2000. Since then, it’s kept a reputation as one of the best concert venues in the country and even made number 5 on Pollstar’s annual top 100 club venues in the world. The Pageant has an incredible vibe to it and is set up for anyone to enjoy. The main floor is like a large cabaret with tables and chairs to the back but still allows dancing and moshing to occur within the pit that’s towards the front. If those two options don’t suit you there’s also a large balcony for reserved seating. No matter where you choose to stand, sit or dance though, you are always within 70 feet of the stage. This venue also plays a huge variety of music. Bands such as, Say Anything, Chevelle, Shinedown, Mumford and Sons and even Sara Bareilles have performed here. There’s something for everyone to enjoy at The Pageant. You can purchase tickets online or at the door. Visit The Pageant’s website www.thepageant.com for more information and a calendar of events.

local bands. National touring acts are also welcomed. After being renovated, the Firebird has truly succeeded in achieving a rock club sort of feel with a dark mysterious vibe as well. There is standing room only but towards the bar you can find seating or booths if you really need to relax. The sound here is top notch in quality and reviews support how top notch the staff is as well. If you’re looking for a music venue that plays indie local bands with a great fun atmosphere to take your friends to, this is definitely a place to visit. Overall, this description does not and cannot do “Rookie” justice – it’s something you have to experience first-hand. “Rookie” can be viewed online at rookiemag. com. It features a monthly theme (the first four being “Beginnings,” “Secrets,” Girl Gang,” and “Home”) around which all the articles are based. It is updated on weekdays 3 times a day – after school, after dinner, and before bed. Be sure to check it out!

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. Read these tips to score (and plan) a date with that special someone.

People who are flirting normally talk in a higher pitch than if they were not flirting. A guy’s most receptive sense is sight. Catch his eye by wearing something asymmetrical, like a shirt worn off the shoulder.

The quickest way to get to know someone is to go for a drive. Prepare for deep conversation or turn up the music for a carefree time. When a guy flirts, he continously checks the other person’s reaction with eye contact.

When choosing a date location, consider the atmosphere the restuarant rather than the menu itself.

A girl’s most receptive sense is touch, so guys should wear pleasing textures (in other words, don’t go overboard!).

RAMS- After three years of coming up short in the NFC West, it’s time to change head coach. St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke reached out for help and former Tennessee Titans’ coach, Jeff Fisher, answered his call. Kroenke signed Fisher to a five year, 35 million dollar deal. Fisher has been in the National Football League as a head coach for 17 years. He stuck with Tennessee team since he first joined the NFL with a record of 142 wins, and 120 losses. Defense is crucial to Fisher, seeing as though that was the

big reason he was so successful with the Titans, that is why Fisher wants to sign defensive coordinator Gregg Williams from the New Orleans Saints. In addition to the recent signing of Fisher, St. Louis Rams head coach for three seasons, Steve Spagnuolo, was fired, leaving St. Louis with a record of ten wins and 38 losses. This next season will be Sam Bradford’s first year under new management other than Spagnuolo. The Rams have a chance to be really competitive again with a veteran such as Fisher. So for all Rams fans lets welcome coach Jeff Fisher to the Edward Jones Dome.

BLUES- After the loss of the Blues coach Davis Payne, the Blues looked for a new coach and that coach is Ken Hitchcock. In the first ten games as the Blues coach, the Blues held a 7-1-2 record. Ken Hitchcock and the St. Louis Blues received 16 out of 20 points possible winning 80 percent of their first ten games. Hitchcock has passed former coach Joel Quenneville with a winning percentage of 70 in the first ten games. He has changed the mentality of the players completely allowing them to enter the rink with a winning attitude. The team is playing full hockey where the defense does not let up its becoming a fast pace game for all three periods. Hitchcock has dramatically changed the offense forcing the Blues’ shooters to take a shot at the net regardless if the defense is clamping down or not.

Hitchcock, 59, has coached 1,042 National Hockey League games with Dallas, Philadelphia and Columbus, compiling a record of 534 wins 350 losses (without overtime) for a .588 winning percentage. This is exactly what the Blues needed and being in the top five in the entire NHL, the Blues could be looking at a great playoff spot. Going from the relaxed style of Davis Payne to the fast, aggressive style of Ken Hitchcock is just the spark the Blues needed.

Cardinals- The 2011 World Series champs looked for a new skipper after looked to Mike Matheny to lead the Redbirds in 2012. Being a former catcher for the Cardinals as well as a minor league pitching instructor Matheny is very familiar with the Redbirds. However, this is Matheny’s first time ever as a coach in the majors. This is a challenging task asking someone to coach a team coming off a world series quality season. Tony LaRussa had a great career as the St. Louis Cardinals manager, but at some point every coach has to pass the torch. Last season was a real underdog story were LaRussa’s Cardinals were down 12.5 games and mounted a comeback in 25 days. Winning the world series is the best way possible to end a great career like Tony’s. Coming off that World Series victory its now Matheny’s Cardinals who will have to make a statement in 2012. With all the talent on the Cardinals roster for 2012 Cardinal nation should not expect anything less

than perfection. The roster looks great for the Cardinals with the ace starting pitcher Adam Wainwright coming back from Tommy johns surgery. Although Albert Pujols is no longer in St. Louis, Matheny has made moves to improve the lineup like signing right fielder Carlos Beltran to a two year deal. Matheny has made defensive changes making Lance Berkman the Cardinal first baseman. The hard task for Matheny will be figuring out how to arrange the batting order. Matheny has multiple power bats in his arsenal like Lance Berkman, David Freese, Matt Holiday, and the newest Cardinal Carlos Beltran. Though Matheny has never been a skipper before it sure looks like he is off to a good start. All aboard the Redbird express straight into the 2012 season.

How to calculate your birth path number: If your birthday is April 28, 1996, for example, note it as follows: Birth Month is April, which = 4 Birth Day = 28 Birth Year is 1996 = 1996. Add up the digits of all of these numbers: 4+2+8+1+9+9+6 = 39 Further “reduce” this number to a single digit by adding its digits: 3+9 = 12 And then further reduce it, if necessary (it has to be a single digiit, 1-9) : 1+2 = 3 The final digit, 3, is your Birth Path Number! On Saturday, Jan. 21, O’Fallon’s boys’ bowling team showed their mycalhurley@othstoday.com superior bowling prowess and grasped the top advancing team into their State tournament on Jan. 28 at St. Claire Bowl. Of the bowlers on the team, sophomore Billy Goodman and junior Tommy Frost were the top second and third bowlers, with a score of 1379 and 1375, respectively. Overall, the team bowled a 6591, beating out rival, Belleville West by over 200 pins, also setting a personal high for them as well. Such an impres- (TJ Price/The Panther) sive score score gap is rarely seen in bowling and greatly increased the confidence of the team. Looking back at past year, the team has great success at becoming state qualifiers; however, the team has had no luck stopping the various competition to earn the State title, earning 11th place at last year’s State. With a great sectionals win in the bag, the team hoped to do similar in their journey to State and possibly becoming the State champions. The roster going into State consisted of seniors Ryan O’Sullivan and Ryan Greynolds, juniors Brenden Pi-

Mycal Hurley

cou, Tommy Frost, and Jason Lewis, and sophomores Billy Goodman, Josh Brown and Mikaid Stewart. Going into the first day of the State championship, O’Fallon placed first with the second place team a mere 66 pins behind. With such a close score, the boys’ knew they needed to step their game up to hold their advantage. “I think we just needed to stay relaxed and not worry to much about winning or losing, but rather having fun and enjoying the experience,” said senior captain Ryan O’Sullivan. Unfortunately for the boys, this lead was short-lived going into the second day of the competition, as they struggled to find their niche during the initial games. At the end of the day, the boys placed fourth with a total score of 12,496, averaging about 207 pins and only 425 pins behind first place. In the individuals’ competition, Goodman placed 11th with 2644 pins, and Frost placed 14th with 2600 pins with Goodman receiving a medal from our own, Mr. Rich Bickel. Although the team did not place top three, they still had fun competing and learned much from this experience.

Seasons changing for the Blues Jacob Cook

Despite a disappointing end to the 2010-2011 season, jacobcook@othstoday.com the St. Louis Blues are powering through this season. The Blue have managed to make it into a 4-way tie for 2nd place. Many have been looking to new head coach Ken Hitchcock for guidance as the season begins to really unravel and teams show their tenacity before the playoffs. Since Hitchcock’s arrival as head coach, the Blues have gone for 15 wins, 5 losses, and 5 overtime/shootout losses. With all the recent coaching changes in the rest of the league’s teams, only Hitchcock has captured the ability to bring his team back from most first half misfortunes. One of many reasons the Blues’ season has turned out so well after hiring Hitchcock is both goaltenders for the Blues, Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliot. Both Halak and Elliot have stepped up their game and are etching their name into the seasons best. Elliot currently holds second place in the league for goals allowed on average, perhaps the Blues’ greatest asset so far in the season(He’s going to the All-Star game for that one).

Halak quickly turned around his unfortunate season after coach Hitchcock arrived; before Hitchcock, Halak was bringing up the end of the pack as far as goals allowed counts. Captain Center David Backes is leading the Blues points with 37 points, just 21 shy of the league leader, Evengi Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Ladies man TJ Oshie closely follows Backes in points, just 5 points shorts of leading the team. The Blues’ defense continues to deny teams any hope of holding onto an early lead given their trend of stopping all goals after the 2nd period. Many teams crumble under the Blues’ defense, primarily Barrett Jackman, Alex Pietrangelo, Kevin Shattenkirk, and Roman Polak who lead the teams defense. With the loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Monday, the Blues are staying in a 4-way tie for 2nd place in the league with the New York Rangers, the Boston Bruins, and the Chicago Blackhawks. If they manage to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins. Be sure to support your St. Louis Blues as they continue to dominate the ice.

Coach s Corner: Coach Exton Located in that Dianiche room no new-comer Baxtron can find on his/her dianichebaxtron@othstoday.com own at the Smiley campus, Coach Glen Exton can be found teaching Driver’s Education. Mr. Exton is known for his personality and great social skills.

If he’s not telling students about the dangers of the road or of hilarious situations he gets himself into, he’s coaching wrestling. Born in Alton, Mr. Exton didn’t always want to be an educator or head wrestling coach. He attended Roxana High School and graduated in 1978. While at Roxana, Mr. Exton participated in football, wrestling, baseball, and track. It wasn’t until after graduation that he choose to go into coaching. “I became a coach so that I could help develop young athletes,” he said “and it seemed enjoyable.” Before coming to O’Fallon, Mr. Exton taught and coached at Vandalia High School for 14 years. At Vandalia, his favorite coaching moment was in ‘96 when the boys wrestling team won state. When asked why he decided to come to OTHS after doing so well at Vandalia, he said, “It was a hard decision. I was drawn to O’Fallon because of the opportunity to coach at a larger school. And for the challenge, I knew it would be hard.” Mr. Exton concluded saying that his favorite coaching memory at OTHS would be when the boys beat Granite City for the first time in school history. Outside of his 33 years of coaching, Mr. Exton enjoys fishing and hunting animals such as deer, squirrels and rabbits. When he wants to motivate his players he tells them, “First of all they’re not players; I tell my wrestlers all I expect is 100%... Go hard or go home.”

Sporting a 11-6 record and a 3-2 conference record the team shows a marked improvement from their 11-11 record from last year. Despite having a relatively young varsity team for most of the season due to injuries they managed to wrestle extremely well against several tough opponents. One wrestler with high hopes in the state tournament series is senior captain Bryon Pierson. This grappler has really come into his own as he made his move to the 160 lb weight class. His recent first place win at the notoriously difficult Geneseo tournament raises (TJ Price/The Panther) his personal record even higher with 28 wins and only 8 losses. Even with that in mind, the Panthers will not have an easy journey to the state title having to battle their way through arguably the strongest regional and sectional tournaments south of

Chicago. With fierce competition coming from Bellivelle West and Granite both considered top teams in the entire state let alone the conference. Despite all of the obstacles that lie ahead it is still safe to say that we can expect to hear more about how our wrestlers doing big things as they move on to the post season. Not only does he have an impressive individual record he was detrimental to many on the teams wins as well as a place finisher in various tournaments. With his loss the panthers will have to battle their way through arguably the strongest regional and sectional tournaments south of Chicago. With fierce competition coming from Belleville West and Granite both considered top teams in the state of Illinois let alone conference. Despite all of the obstacles that lie ahead it is still safe to say that we can expect to hear big things as they move into the post season.

If you’ve ever gone to a recent O’Fallon-East St. ivanleonard@othstoday.com Louis basketball, it seems that no matter the score at any point of them game, it’ll most likely come down to who has the last possession. showcased with hard-fouls. Aggressive defense and controversial calls(or no calls) by the referees. After senior point guard Roy Bullock III fouled, the Panther fans at in attendance worried that another heart breaking defeat to the Flyers was inevitable. But instead of crumbling on the road, they buckled down and made key defensive stops and senior Isaac Bouquet rose to the occasion and sank the go-ahead three with under a minute left to play. “I felt I needed to step up since Roy was out of the game,” said Bouquet . “I didn’t know what to think when it went in. I knew I had to get back on defense because there was time left. We’ve got

a long way to go. I can shoot it.” After sinking that shot O’Fallon, led 57-56 and came away victorious after stopping the Flyers senior Brandon Johnson on consecutive shots, capping off a thrilling fourth quarter. “O’Fallon, we beat them three times last year by a total margin of five points,” said East St. Louis Coach Ray Coleman.“So all three of those games went our way last year. Game No.1 went their way. They played hard. They wanted this ball game. I think they wanted it more than our guys wanted it. They deserved to win and they won. The better team won tonight.” Senior Michael Senior Michael Jackson defensive enforcer. Jackson added, (TJ Price/ The Panther) “We knew one of the three seniors (Jackson, Bouquet, and Kinmon) had to step up because Roy was out and we had to make something happen; Isaac did just that.” “We wanted to get payback for that hard foul on Roy and because we couldn’t beat them last year,” senior Michael Jackson said. Those four seniors have really stepped up this year with the departure of four key players from last year’s conference champion team. They have done an excellent job in leading this team combining for 49 of the teams 62 points on the way to a current 12-4 record. Their chemistry on the court and leadership is an underrated part of the Panthers’ success this year.

Led by coach Ken Barnhill the panther hockey team is really proud of the year they have had finishing with a record of 8 wins and 7 losses. The Panther record is not an amazing one but it was a really solid year for the team. There is a lot of things to look back on and be proud of. “We have a lot of leadership on the team and players know Goalie Justin Lewis and Alt. Captain Ian Wilson protect the goal against how to lead a team very well” offensive scoring. (Photo Credit: Dawn Wilson) Coach Ken Barnhill said. This team has a lot of veteran players that have started very young and are finishing up there season strong as a Panther. “Young players are stepping up and that’s because of the leadership we have they have really come together this season” Coach says. Leadership is a huge part on this team with the captain Mitch Barnhill with four goals Seth Riggan skates the puck away from the goal after a pass from Alt. and three assists. Brady Page!

He’s charming, he’s witty, he’s intelligent and he knows just how to sweep the ladies off their feet. Brady Page, the student body president, was honored with the title, “2012 Mr. Irresistible”. Throughout the pageant, Page kept a happy and humorous attitude. In the swim wear competition section, Page did a fabulous job showing off his muscle man bod. During the interview portion, he remained confident and calm as he answered each of his questions. Although Page was holding his own throughout the entire pageant, he really rose above during the talent section. For his talent, Page was an 80’s aerobics instructor. Along side him were three golden girl dancers who added even more character to the humorous act. When his two minutes were up, the soon to be Mr. Irresistible, received a very loud round of applause from the audience. Once crowned as the 2012 Mr. Irresistible, Brady Page said “it was the second best feeling in

The low down on the Mr. I Pageant

The 2012 Mr. Irresistible Pageant took place in the auditorium of the Milburn campus

on Saturday, January 21. The evening kicked off with a very entertaining opening number. This piece included all 10 of the Mr. Irresistible contestants as well as some of the varsity Golden Girls. This years top ten contestants where as follows: Kurtis Breger, Evan Figueroa, Mitch Gibbs, Dylan Highley, Brenden Kleiboeker, Joseph Mueller, Patrick Nittler, Brady Page, Alex Reifchneider and Cody Ray. Following the opening number was the beach wear competition. This part of the pageant gave the boys the opportunity to strut their stuff in beach wear of their choice. The audience saw a wide variety of beach attire such as a scuba diver, a dolphin trainer, and

many others. While the boys were preparing for their talents, a short slide show was shown to the audience. The slide show premiered interviews in which the boys were asked a wide variety of questions. Their responses were humorous and kept the audience entertained. When the talents began, the crowd eagerly watched each one. Every talent was different and creative. As the night came to an end, there were other special performances, such as the Golden Girls performance and the Thespian Society skit. Between the two performances was the formal wear competition. This portion of the evening allowed all the contestants to spiff up in their very best dress up suits. This section had the ladies chatting. Each contestant simply looked “irresistible”. The moment everyone had been waiting for had finally arrived.

The top 5 Mr. Irresistible contestants were announced. This years top 5 contestants were: Mitch Gibbs, Dylan Highley, Brenden Kleiboeker, Joseph Mue-ller and Brady Page. In order to narrow down the competition, the remaining 5 contestants participated in the surprise round. During the surprise round, each contestant drew a piece of paper out of the box. That paper had instructions on it and the contestants had to follow them. This portion of the competition was extremely entertaining. The theatre echoed with laughter and applause’s. Once this was over, the coronation began. All 10 contestants were brought back onto the stage. Mr. Macho was announced first. The 2012 Mr. Macho Award was given to Mitch Gibbs.

Following Mr. Macho was the Mr. Charming award. O’Fallon’s Mr. Charming award was given to Joseph Mueller. The next award given was to the 2nd Runner up who was (dun dun dun)...Mitch Gibbs. This year’s first runner up award was given to Joseph Mueller. Anticipation arose throughout the entire auditorium as the crowd and contestants eagerly awaited on the edge of their seats for the announcement of Mr. Irresistible 2012. The 2012 Mr. Irresistible was awarded to Brady Page. All 10 contestants did a phenomenal job through out the evening. This years Mr. Irresistible contest was a success.
