Spring semester is off to a great start. We enrolled 50 new students (this new class is 30% over our target), and as of today, CE spring enrollment is up 8%. Looking back at fall semester, some of the highlights include an English class taught entirely on iPads by Liberal Arts and Sciences Chair Debra Ballard, and several “Pacific Standard Time”-related classes that involved students’ traveling to exhibitions throughout the Southern California region. Hyundai and Mattel sponsored studio design projects, and Integrated Learning partners included Loyola Elementary School in Weschester, Surfider Foundation, and Space for Nurturing Creativity in Shyamavan, India.

Suzanne Lacy / “Doin’It in Public” Featured in LA Times The Sunday Jan. 15 L.A. Times featured two stories about powerful arts leaders: Graduate Public Practice Chair Suzanne Lacy, and founder of Otis’ Communication Arts program Sheila de Bretteville, the first tenured woman at Yale’s School of Art, where she is Caroline M. Street Professor of Graphic Design. Both artists are included in the current exhibition at Otis’ Ben Maltz Gallery, “Doin’ it in Public: Feminism and Art at the Woman’s Building” (through Feb. 26). http://articles.latimes. com/2012/jan/15/entertainment/la-ca-pst-womansbuilding-20120115 and http://www.latimes. com/entertainment/ news/la-et-suzannelacy-20120114,0,942877. story
