an intensive, four-week, pre-college program for students ages 15 and older who wish to experience what it is like to study at one of the top art and design colleges in the country. Serious young artists seeking to strengthen and enhance their art skills, as well as students with limited art training are invited to participate.
Course Overview Immerse yourself in a rigorous, creative environment with other students who are passionate about art, design and creative writing. This summer, build and develop your skills while focusing on and exploring a specific Area of Concentration of your choosing.
Courses Small classes ensure personalized, in-depth learning. Rigorous course work includes hands-on studio classes and labs in your chosen Area of Concentration (three days per week) and a Foundation Studio (two days per week). Courses meet 9am – 4pm, Monday – Friday and include homework. Three (3) units of college credit are awarded upon successful completion of the program. (Summer of Art is not suited for students in search of a recreational program.)
Faculty Summer of Art courses are taught by award-winning instructors that are practicing professionals, many of whom teach in Otis’ BFA and MFA programs. Contact with these instructors provides a glimpse into the working lives of professional artists and designers and introduces you to many career choices in art, design and related fields. Final Exhibition You and your instructors will select your best work for the final exhibition. The work is displayed throughout the campus, giving you the experience of being part of a gallery show with your peers, while sharing your artwork with family and friends.

Resident Student Life
About Otis Otis College of Art and Design, located on the west side of Los Angeles, is a fiveacre campus in the heart of Southern California’s creative community. The nearby coastal communities of Venice, Marina del Rey, and Santa Monica are home to many of Los Angeles’ most important art and design studios, as well as headquarters for many leading film, digital imaging, and toy companies.
Playa del Oro Apartments is in one of Southern California’s most desirable communities and only two blocks from Otis. A contemporary design creates a light and airy feel. Nestled in a dynamic canopy of lush flowers, trees and tropical plants are a spa, sparkling pool with barbeques, a fitness center, and a resident lounge. Students must be between 15 – 17 years of age to reside in housing for the Summer of Art program. The Coordinator of Residence Life and Housing oversees trained Resident Assistants who reside in each apartment unit, providing supervision for the summer residents. Resident students participate in organized evening and weekend activities such as beach trips, variety shows, museum visits, and dances.
Facilities Main Campus All courses, with the exception of Fashion Design, are held on Otis’ Bram and Elaine Goldsmith main campus.
Fashion Campus Fashion students travel by courtesy shuttle to Otis’ campus at the California Market Center in downtown Los Angeles three days per week.

Café The café provides a diverse menu that includes hot entrées, salads, and snacks. The campus is within easy walking distance of a variety of restaurants, cafes, and grocery stores. 72 Foundation Studio Select one Foundation Studio course for extensive skill building. The fundamental skills of all art making, whether in fashion, painting, photography, or digital media, are rooted in observational drawing. Foundation courses mirror Otis BFA’s first year. You’ll spend two days a week practicing observational drawing, which provides a head-start in furthering your art education at a college level.

Select one of the following offerings Beginning Drawing Draw from observation and develop your perceptual and pictorial skills. Learn about composition, perspective, and representational analysis using line, plane, and the dynamics of light. You’ll work with a range of materials including graphite (pencils), charcoal, Conté crayon, and color pastel. Recommended for students with little or no previous drawing experience. Intermediate Drawing Further your skills of observation, spatial analysis, and compositional organization through a variety of media. Develop your critical thinking and technical drawing skills through traditional and experimental activities that are conceptually challenging. Students must have previous Beginning Drawing experience. Life Drawing Render the human figure while exploring a variety of drawing media and techniques. The unclothed model provides for the study of gesture as well as skeletal and anatomical structure. Students must have previous observational drawing experience. Not an option in combination with the Life Drawing Area of Concentration. Right Brain Drawing Anyone can draw if provided with proper guidance. You’ll develop perceptual and basic drawing skills that transfer to other disciplines. Exercises focus on edges, positive/ negative space, sighting relationships, light/shadow and their interrelationships. This course incorporates techniques based on the work of Betty Edwards, renowned author of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Not available for all Areas of concentration.

Areas of Concentration
Select one of the following sixteen offerings: 2D Animation Develop both hand and computer animation techniques. By using traditional hand methods in Flash on Wacom technology, you’ll learn full character animation skills including the basics of timing, weight and anticipation. During the duration of this class, you’ll view and analyze a variety of animated films to aid in studying technique and developing animation projects. Architecture/Landscape/ Interiors Explore architectural drawing and model making techniques through hands-on studio projects. Form, space, and materials in the built world are introduced through field trips to significant buildings, interiors, and landscapes. Recommended for students with an interest in three-dimensional forms in space and their relationship to color and texture. Basic Game Design Through skill building exercises and hands-on studio projects you’ll explore core aspects of video game design including concept development, design and production. Recommended for students with an interest in creating games for the digital media industry. Creative Writing Learn and explore the fundamentals of creative writing. We will experiment with a range of techniques and forms, exercising our skills and imaginations in a supportive, challenging and adventurous environment. Areas of focus include fiction, poetry, and the art of bookmaking.

Digital Filmmaking & Storytelling Learn basic digital media techniques and principles through digital video projects. This course covers pre-production, storyboarding, production, and post-production through core tools including Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and After Effects, and Apple’s Final Cut Pro. You’ll explore timing, motion, storytelling, the use of metaphor, and design. Fashion Design Explore the world of fashion design including illustration, model drawing, and apparel construction. You’ll be introduced to professional fashion illustration, sewing construction, and design in this hands-on course. No previous sewing experience is required. Fashion classes take place at the California Market Center, in the heart of LA’s apparel district. Optional courtesy shuttle included. Graphic Design Create graphic design projects by learning and applying the methodology of visual communication. Combine images, text, texture, and dimension while using media from letterpress to digital. You’ll focus on creating effective communication through visual means. Recommended for students with interest in print, multimedia, and online communications including packaging, identity and branding, and typography. Illustration This course introduces the art of illustration and narrative sequence. You’ll develop conceptual ideas and strong drawing skills for specific visual and illustration projects. Recommended for students with interest in illustration and drawing leading to a variety of careers, including advertising, animation, editorial, and book illustration.
Life Drawing Using a range of perceptual and structural skills while utilizing a variety of drawing media, you’ll analyze the human figure. The unclothed model provides for the study of gesture, skeletal, and anatomical structure. Previous observational drawing experience required. Students who select Life Drawing as an Area of Concentration must choose Beginning or Intermediate Drawing for the Foundation requirement.
Printmaking Learn the fundamentals of printmaking, including silkscreen, monoprint, engraving, and linoleum carving methods as well as drawing, painting and collage. Balancing traditional and digital practices, you’ll incorporate personal imagery in both editions and unique prints. You’ll explore the use of the multiple in historical and contemporary art and commerce as a method of connection between individuals and cultures.
Mobile App Design Mobile app design made easy! Learn how to create applications for the iOS (iPhone, iPad) and Android operating systems. You’ll develop skills in writing code and creating graphics while gaining an understanding of the internal logic that can be applied to all programming languages.
Product Design Jewelry, Fashion Accessories, Shoes, Consumer Electronics, Sports Equipment… Almost everything we interact with is a result of Product Design. In this class you’ll explore the inventions of your imagination while moving through the steps of concept development to computer design to fabrication. Through hands on experience, you’ll produce a prototype while learning design methodologies that you will apply in any discipline.
Painting This hands-on course explores the materials and methods of painting, including brush handling, the use and mixing of colors, the study of representational and abstract imagery, and the development of personal style. You’ll also examine historical and contemporary issues. Focuses on the practical application of painting as a medium, both in technique and material. Photography Develop your skills in both traditional and digital photography while focusing on traditional themes of still life, portraiture, and documentation. Begin with the traditional single-lens reflex camera, properties of black-and-white film, shooting techniques, film development, and printing. Progress through the use of new technology, including the digital camera and Adobe Photoshop, learn how to enhance and manipulate images. Students furnish their own 35mm film and digital cameras, film, and paper.
Toy Design Stretch your imagination! From designer toys, action figures, dolls, plush to games, bring your toy ideas to life as you design and create a model. Explore the processes of brainstorming, market research, concept sketching, engineering, model making, and presentation, which can be incorporated into any discipline. Urban Art “The beauty is in the street, the message is on the wall.” Explore poster art throughout history as it relates to populist themes of peace, justice, freedom, human rights, and economic equality. You’ll incorporate original drawings as well as images from newsprint, digital media, pop culture and science to design posters. You’ll work “Gorilla style” (without the use of modern digital technology) using everyday objects as printmaking tools to create woodblocks, stencils rubbings and collage.

Registration Procedures A completed registration form with student and parent/guardian signature and a $200 deposit or full tuition is required to reserve a space. Note: online registration to Summer of Art is not available. Incomplete registrations cannot be processed. Space is only reserved upon receipt of all completed registration forms and a $200 deposit. Register early to secure your space! Space in each Area of Concentration is limited and Otis cannot guarantee first-choice selection. What if my Area of Concentration Fills up? If an Area of Concentration is full, you may request to be placed on a waiting list and choose another option. If a space becomes available you will be notified. For questions regarding enrollment in a particular concentration, please call (310)665-6864.

Students must be 15 years old by July 9, 2012. No exceptions are made. Students from anywhere in the U.S. (Commuting and non-commuting) International students who have a TOEFL score of 79 or above (additional documentation is required), a Pearson Test of English score of 58 or above, or an iELTS overall band score of 6.5 or above. All registrants who meet the above requirements will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. There are no admissions tests or portfolio requirements, unless applying for a scholarship, (see page 10).

Confirmation Packets
Confirmation of registration and follow-up materials will be sent by mail upon receipt of the completed registration form and $200 deposit or full payment. Please read and complete prior to program. Please allow 10 business days for processing.
Non-refundable
Payment Students who send tuition deposits on or BEFORE April 27th will be billed for the balance. Balance must be paid in full by May 29th. AFTER May 29th, students must pay in full. Payment may be made by check, money order, Visa, or MasterCard only. (Otis College of Art and Design does not accept American Express.) Make checks payable to Otis College of Art and Design. Be sure to write the Registrant’s name and social security number on the check or money order to ensure proper credit. Insufficient Funds or Declined Credit Cards Applicants whose checks are returned for insufficient funds will be charged a $50.00 penalty. The College cannot assume a student has withdrawn from the program because a check has not cleared or has been stopped; payment and penalty remain due. If sufficient payment is not made within 48 hours of notification, students whose checks have been returned may no longer attend classes. The same policy applies to students with declined credit cards. Overdue Accounts If a student’s account accrues a balance due (payment due, returned check, and/or dishonored credit cards, etc.) that remains unpaid for more than fifteen (15) days, the account will be assigned to a collection agency. All such accounts will be charged collection costs, including but not limited to collection agency fees, legal fees, and court costs. This information will be disclosed to credit reporting organizations.

Supplies Art Supplies (estimated) $200-$400 Supplies vary depending on the Area of Concentration, but you should estimate that materials will cost $200-$400. You can check out the supply lists within the course descriptions at www.otis.edu/soa. Once you register, you will receive a supply list and a list of art stores. Graphaids art supply store is adjacent to Otis. Be sure to bring your supplies on the first day of class. Fashion students may purchase a supply kit at a discount on the first day of classes.

Summer of Art scholarships are available to students who, for financial reasons, would not otherwise be able to attend. Awards are based on family financial information, portfolio, and grade point average. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and/or U.S. residents. Unless otherwise stated, awards can be used toward tuition only and cannot be applied toward supplies or other expenses. A limited number of merit-based scholarships may be available. If you are applying for a meritbased scholarship, please follow the Scholarship Required Documents and Materials and Portfolio Instructions. A complete scholarship application must include all items required, and be received by Monday, April 30th. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Applicants will be notified of the results as soon as award decisions have been made. Do I need to submit a $200 deposit if I’m applying for a scholarship? If your attendance is contingent upon receiving a scholarship award, you are not required to submit the $200 deposit. If you plan to attend the program regardless of whether a scholarship is granted, please submit the $200 deposit to ensure a place in the program.

Creative Writing Portfolio Instructions Writing applicants should submit an 8-10 page sample of poetry, non-fiction or fiction. What format should my portfolio be in? You may submit a portfolio on CD, DVD, or flash drive. No original artwork will be accepted. Work must be completed within the last two years. Each and every item must be labeled with your name and address. How do I get my portfolio back? Include a self-addressed stamped envelope to have your portfolio returned. If you are in the local Los Angeles area, retrieve your portfolio within 30 days of decision notification, or it will be disposed of.

Rooms are available for students 15 – 17 years old on a first-come, first served basis. Trained Resident Assistants live in each apartment unit, providing supervision for the summer residents. Resident students participate in organized evening and weekend activities such as beach trips, variety shows, museum visits, and dances. Applicants who indicate an interest in off-campus housing upon registration are not guaranteed a room reservation. Otis College must receive the housing application materials and full payment, including the security deposit, in order to guarantee a room reservation. Once the housing application materials and full payment are received, a confirmation will be sent with any additional paperwork that must be completed. Housing payments are non-refundable unless another student is found to take the space. Refund Policy: Payments for summer accommodations must be paid in full in order to secure a space. Due to the nature of the housing program, refunds are not provided once the summer housing payment is received. The only exception that will be made to the policy is if the space being vacated is filled with another student. All cancellations/refund requests must be received in writing. Refund requests will not be processed until after the start of the Summer of Art Program. Check the appropriate box on the registration form to receive housing information. Information on roommate assignments is not available prior to check-in.

Questions? For further information regarding housing, please contact the Office of Student Affairs at (310) 846-2648. If you are 18 or older, contact the Office of Student Affairs for alternative housing options. Residents of the student housing program must adhere to all policies, rules, regulations, etc. set forth in the Summer of Art Handbook. The handbook is mailed to each student upon receipt of registration. Residents have a nightly curfew of 10:00pm and may not be away from their assigned rooms overnight. Students who are in violation of any of the policies, rules, regulations, etc. or otherwise create an unsafe or unproductive climate may be disciplined by Otis at its sole and exclusive discretion. The discipline may include dismissal of the student from the program without any refund and/or the receipt of a grade of “F”.

Program Policies
Attendance Attendance policies are strictly enforced; a student who misses three classes from the Area of Concentration, and/or two classes from Foundation Studio will be subject to removal from the program without a refund. Grades and Credit Three semester units of collegelevel credit will be awarded upon successful completion of the fourweek program. Area of Concentration 2 units Foundation Studio 1 unit Evaluation of course work is indicated by the letter grades A through F. Dismissal from the program, for any reason, will result in an “F”.
Cancelled Classes If an Area of Concentration does not meet a minimum enrollment, it will be cancelled. Students will be contacted regarding their second choice. Withdrawal and Refund Policy If enrollment is cancelled before Summer of Art begins, 100% of tuition paid will be refunded, less the deposit and fees. After the program begins, refunds will be issued according to the schedule below: 1st day of program 80% (before 5:00pm) 2nd day
Transcripts Students may request transcripts for transfer of credit to other institutions. Credit toward the Otis BFA program is awarded at the discretion of the department chairperson. Otis is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (985 Atlantic Ave, Suite 100, Alameda, CA 94501, (510) 7489001) and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (11250 Roger Bacon Dr, Suite 21, Reston, VA 20190, (703) 437-0700).
Please call the Registration office at (310) 665-6950 to request official or unofficial transcripts. Transcript requests through the Summer of Art office are not permitted.

Students must submit a withdrawal request in writing to the Continuing Education Office in person, by mail, or by fax no later than 5:00pm Wednesday, July 11 to receive a partial refund. Failure to properly withdraw from a course by Monday, July 16th will result in an “F” grade. Refunds take six weeks to process. Refunds made by credit card will be refunded to the credit card account.
Free Time Students who stay in housing have free-time with no direct supervision by the Resident Director or a Resident Assistant from 4pm – 10pm, Monday – Friday, before and after Saturday field trips until the 10:00pm curfew, and all day on Sunday until the 10:00pm curfew. Zero Tolerance Policy Otis maintains a zero tolerance policy for all illegal activity, including the possession or use of drugs, alcohol, or firearms, whether on or off the Otis campus. Students who are in violation of any Otis policies, rules, regulations, etc. or otherwise create an unsafe or unproductive climate may be disciplined by Otis at its sole and exclusive discretion. The discipline may include dismissal of the student from the program without any refund and/or the receipt of a grade of “F”. Prior to check-in, each student and his or her parent/guardian must sign an acknowledgement form regarding these policies.
