BEHIND THE BUSINESS
INTERVIEW
FIRME MEZCAL AN INTERVIEW WITH FIRME MEZCAL BY ALYSSA BACHES
OTM: Cuéntanos what is Firme Mezcal all about?
The idea of the name was mostly to find a niche
How did you get into the spirits world? How was
but most important to find a word and a name
it born? Cuéntanos todo from the idea to picking
that resonates in the chicano community as well
out the name and everything in between.
as in Mexico and the spanish language actual meaning for firme, not only in Mexico but in
FM: Firme Mezcal is a chicano inspired brand
general the word firme means to be firm, to be
born from the idea of an ancestral spirit with
solid, well made and of a great foundation,
roots to our beloved Mexico and with great pride
but in the chicano Mexican/American slang firme
in our cultural history and pride in both art &
represents many things of the utmost quality, like
religion. Working in the restaurant industry for
a reference when looking at a nice car we say
the last 20 years was a natural step into the
“that's a firme ranfla”, when referencing to a
world of spirits.
beautiful woman it can be referenced as “that's a firme lady” and even to admire, respect and trust
In this case my love for mezcal, the process, the
some one is to reference it as “that's a firme vato”
artisanal methods and simply the spirit itself was
which relates to a worthy respected person and
an easy decision as to why mezcal was the spirit
as mentioned above the simple word “firme”
we would distill.
represents something well done and solid.
OTM: Cuéntanos about Oaxaca, what does it mean to you?
OTM: Why mezcal and not whisky or vodka?
OTM: How would you describe the taste of firme mezcal?
FM: Oaxaca is truly a magical place, lets not forget that mezcal can actually be produced in 9 denominations of origin or 9 states that can legally call the spirit mezcal, but for us Oaxaca is just the “cuna” of mezcal, its the state where the best mezcal is made. Beautiful sierras and llanos but an amazing coastal area that gives the agaves a very unique characteristic.
FM: Like mentioned above mezcal was just a natural step into an industry where I was already very familiar with tequilas, vodkas and whiskeys, but the ancestral and artisanal ways of mezcal that is known in the world as the most perfect spirit. Mezcal is made from an agave plant that unlike other spirts needs its raw main ingredient over 8 to 20 yrs to mature, so sustainability is a big part of our business plan.
FM: There is a stigma and almost a bad reputation about mezcal that came with very old marketing gimmicks such as that of the worm, that was simply a American marketing idea that gave our spirit a bad reputation, mezcal is best when sipped, slowly enjoyed and like we say “a besos de mezcal” this amazing spirit is very complex and unique with nuances of earthy tones, herbs, spices, woods and fruits.
"OAXACA IS TRULY A MAGICAL PLACE"
We care about mother earth and will do our small part about keeping traditions alive but most important help keep agave around for many many years to come so everyone can enjoy mezcal without depleting resources.
BEHIND THE BUSINESS
“A BESOS DE MEZCAL”
OTM:How would you recommend us to enjoy your mezcal, any tips or recipes you would like to share? FM: Mezcal is becoming more and more mainstream and is rapidly gaining market share from tequilas but the most traditional ways of drinking mezcal is to simply grab your veladora glass or jicaritas and sip and kiss the elixir of the gods one besito at a time. for recipes please follow our ig and website.
OTM: What makes firme mezcal stand out from the rest? FM: What makes us stand out from the rest is that we take great pride in the Mexican/American culture with some elements that a lot of us relate to and take great pride in such as ancestral culture like the aztec calendar which is seen in the front of our label, art, which is a huge part of our chicano pride ship and can be seen in the barrios murals, street art, lowriders cars, tattoos and alleyways and one of the most relatable elements in the chicano community is “religion” you can see that in our branding and bottle itself and is very common in chicano art, tattoos, our own living rooms. These elements set us apart from the rest and will allow our brand to be decorated and packaged in the iconic brown paper bag which is a staple in the barrios hoods.
OTM: What band or artist would you like to see drinking firme mezcal? FM: As a matter of fact our iconic brown paper bag packaging will allow us to collaborate and work with well renowned artists but also open a great opportunity for new and upcoming artists to decorate our paper bags which can translate to merchandise, art and any template where that bag art can be printed as well. For this 2022 collaboration the famous and influential “Rob The Original” will decorate our paper bag packaging, rob is a social media influencer with a 1.4 million followers reach. Rob has direct links to the music industry with none the least than “bobby dee” who owns bobby dee presents and snoops army along none other than snoop dog.
OTM: Talk to us about patience, I know being in this industry you have to have persistence due to the competition and just the time it takes to make a mescal. Just like in the music industry there's competition and it takes time to make good music. But I feel that having patience is like having a super power; it doesn't come naturally to everyone. FM: You are correct, the competition in this industry is not only vast but cut throat, there are big corporate and celebrity owned brands already in the market with huge financial backing and support so patience at least for me and firme mezcal is crucial, we know that our quality is incredible and patience will only help us as we organically and slowly grow.
"THIS INDUSTRY IS NOT ONLY VAST BUT CUT THROAT" OTM: Any tasting events coming soon? FM: We have some events soon, we are launching as we prepare to open markets in Arizona, New York, Montana, Wyoming, Alaska, Nevada and Texas. We hope to do a tasting launch in each state when the time comes. OTM: Anything else you would like to share with us? FM: Come take this wild journey with us, put on some music of your best artist, bring out your veladora cup and sip on some firme mezcal. Please give our ig page a follow/like at firme_mezcal and visit our website to buy. www.firmemezcal.com

LATINOS TRIUNFANDO EN COACHELLA 2022
LIVE MUSIC
LIVE MUSIC

BANDIT THE RAPPER
OTM: Who is Bandit The Rapper? BTR: James Portley from Philadelphia PA. OTM: How did you become a rapper? BTR: I always loved music, I grew up hearing my dad play a lot of oldies. I then had a babysitter that would rap and it influenced me to try and I liked it. When I tell people that they look at me crazy but it’s the truth I have to keep it real. Hearing her do it then hearing other aspiring artists do it was the biggest influence. I’m from Philly where even the grandmas can battle rap lol.
OTM: Can we talk about your hair? Because I love it! I feel like it's your signature look. Do you do it yourself or do you get it professionally done? What influences the colors you pick? Etc … BTR: Thank you. Sure … it has become a signature look. Sometimes I do it myself or ask someone to help me. It’s not as hard as people think it is. I don't have that much hair lol. My mood is the influence for the most part like now I have purple hair and I did that because purple represents royalty and creativity and that’s how I have been feeling the past few months. For breast cancer awareness month I do pink for a friend I lost to breast cancer.
OTM: I got to listen to Faded Memories, I really like it had a retro vibe to it. Can you tell us more about it?
OTM: What has been the biggest obstacle that you've had to overcome in the music industry?
BTR: I appreciate it … that was just me stepping out of my comfort zone and wanting to restore that good feeling in music. When I think of 80s music that’s what comes to mind. So I did a whole 80’s influenced album “Lavender Sunset” which will be coming soon.
BTR: Understanding that I’m my own worst critic is still something I’m working on but I’m almost there. Being a creative is hard but being a creative that’s also a public figure is a full time job I swear. OTM: Any advice for someone that is trying to make it in the music industry?
OTM: Any new music videos coming out soon? BTR: I just released the video for “Faded Memories” you can catch it on BET jams , YouTube etc OTM: Do you have a dream venue, festival or event you would like to perform at? BTR: Coachella!!!!! and definitely The Roots Picnic OTM: Is there any artist you would like to collaborate with? BTR: Chris Brown, Kanye and J Balvin are my top 3 artist I would like to work with currently. OTM: Is it safe to say you also like fashion? BTR: YES!!!! I LOVE FASHION … “when you look good you feel good” that’s not just a saying that’s a fact! OTM: Who's your favorite designer? BTR: Chino Arte’ ,who was the very first designer to ask me to perform at New York Fashion Week.
"EVERY GREAT IN THIS BUSINESS HAS STARTED WHERE YOU ARE NOW, THAT ALONE SHOULD BE THE INSPIRATION. IF THEY CAN DO IT AND SUCCEED, WHY CAN’T YOU?" BTR: Don’t let NOBODY talk you out of your dream. Every great in this business has started where you are now, that alone should be the inspiration. If they can do it and succeed, why can’t you?!! OTM: Anything else you would like to share? BTR: Thanks to all my fans/ supporters for everything… y’all got “Faded Memories” #4 on the iTunes Charts … and the album “Lavender Sunset” is coming real soon!!!
