MOTORCYCLES & EVs

Motorcyclists

Driving Route 66 on two wheels is, for many, an American rite of passage. And the Route and its people are friendly to motorcyclists. However, you’ll want to keep an eye out for uneven or rough terrain, especially on older parts of the Route, as some spots can be tough for motorcycle riders. Contact local authorities and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation for information on road conditions in specific areas, or contact the Oklahoma Bikers Association at (405) 812-6224 or at facebook.com/oklahomabikersassociation. Many motorcycle shops and dealerships are located along the Route, including:

Electric Vehicles

It is possible to drive the entire length of Route 66 in an electric vehicle, but the secret is being prepared. Oklahoma’s Route 66 EV infrastructure is very good, with multiple charging stations in most towns along the Mother Road. Most of these are Tesla, Electrify America, Francis Energy, and ChargePoint brand chargers. Download the PlugShare app to find the ones you need, and try to stop where there are multiple chargers to ensure you find one that works so you don’t have to wait as long.

Oklahoma’s stretch of Route 66 is more than 400 miles long. If you parked a line of 1965 Ford Mustangs end-to-end along it, you’d need almost 140,000 of them to cover the whole thing.

ROUTE 66 History

Stretching 2,448 miles through the heart of the country since 1926, Route 66 still is the Main Street of America.

This stretch of blacktop was the brainchild of an Oklahoman: Cyrus Avery, a Tulsa businessman, to be exact. Avery was a member of the federal board created to design the nation’s highway system, and he lobbied for a road connecting Chicago and Los Angeles that would pass through Oklahoma. Thanks to Avery’s e orts, Route 66 was commissioned in 1926 and paved over the next several years. It famously carried Dust Bowl migrants to California, as referenced in John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath—in fact, it was Steinbeck who christened it the Mother Road. It inspired songs and a 1960s television show—not to mention the Pixar film Cars—and carried millions of Americans on road trips in the prosperous years following World War II. Once the Interstate Highway System opened in the 1950s, the Mother Road’s fortunes declined. But small businesses, towns, cities, and supporters along the Route kept its spirit alive, and now, Route 66 is a cultural juggernaut, supporting these same towns and businesses just the way they supported it all these years.
