Day 2 Let your Alpine driving holiday begin Today will begin your driving holiday in one of your beautiful cars. Only a little while after navigating out of Munich, you will sense that you have arrived in Germany since you will be driving in the charming countryside of Bavaria on the way to your first destination, the Salzburg lake region: enjoy the rolling meadows, picturesque villages with iconic church steeples, a visit to a gem of an Automobile museum, followed by lunch right by the shore of beautiful lake Chiemsee with the Austrian Alps as the backdrop. Then, in the afternoon, as a first real treat, we will guide you across a magnificent mountain road (the Rossfeld Panoramastrasse, long fabled for its role on the Germany hill climbing race calendar), p72
designed as if it had only one function: to showcase and to invite you to enjoy these glorious mountains. You can expect to arrive at your hotel in the late afternoon.

Day 3 In and around Salzburg – A romantic town, elegant, baroque and beautiful “Salzburg with its surroundings is – alongside Rio de Janeiro and Constantinople – one of the most beautiful urban regions in the world!” Even today, the words of Alexander von Humboldt, world-famous traveller and scientist of the late 19th century, ring true. Above all, Salzburg is a city of romance and elegance. Along the river Salzach, and presided over by a mighty fortress, Festung Hohen Salzburg, (the largest fully preserved fortress complex in central Europe), fabulous churches, quiet monasteries, impressive palaces, lush parks, beautiful squares with impressive fountains – all these create an intimate and romantic cityscape that is made all the more lovely by the picturesque mountains (some so high that they are snow-covered all year
round), pristine lakes and green meadows of its surroundings. Salzburg, literally meaning Salt Castle, over centuries generated enormous wealth through nearby salt, gold and copper mines. This wealth allowed the city’s PrinceArchbishops to employ not only some of the finest architects,
painters and builders, but also to invest in prodigious amounts on scientific research, fine arts and culture. Today is your chance to get a glimpse of Salzburg’s charm. We have included in your program some of the better known sites – the mighty fortress, of course, and also p73
Timing Breakfast at your leisure in the hotel
some of its charming Gassen (alleyways) – as well as some of its less-well-known attractions – for example, an intriguing nunnery and a visit to a traditional Salzburg costumes manufactory. What’s more, Salzburg is most certainly worth some free time to explore p74
it on your own or with our guide. Should you be interested in handicraft for which Salzburg is famous or buy curiosities (for example, Austrian Schnapps, a kind of fruity brandy), we will be happy to advise you such that you can make the most out of your day in Salzburg.

Day 4 Salzburg to Carinthia – Into the Alpine countryside Your morning will be devoted to sampling the treasures of the Salzkammergut. With well over seventy large and small lakes (all of drinking-water quality, two of which – Fuschlsee and Wolfgangsee you’ve already seen), rolling pastures, tall mountains, and marvelous roads, the Salzkammergut is one of Austria’s most charming regions. A highlight of the morning will be a visit to one of its typical towns and a snack at one of Austria’s best known Konditoreien or patisseries called Zauner. It will be hard to resist their sweet temptations, but don’t eat too much since we still have a simple lunch
planned for you on the way south toward Carinthia, Austria’s southern-most state. After lunch, you will continue your journey by cutting through the Alps from the northern side, which receives a lot of precipitation throughout the year, to the southern, much sunnier side. By mid-afternoon you will arrive in the hotel which will be yours for the following three nights: an abode built entirely in the style of a traditional Alm (Alpine) village where each of the “huts” is constructed in the style of a lodging as it would have been used cattle herders until not long ago. But don’t worry: each of the “huts” is fitted out with all modern amenities. It will be a wonderful base from which to explore this mountainous region.

Day 5 A side trip into Slovenia The Almdorf is a unique and beautiful hotel with many things to do. So, you maybe tempted to enjoy the hotel and its vicinity in the mountains of Austria’s Carinthia province. However, since you are staying here for three nights, perhaps you want to go on at least one excursion: today or tomorrow. If so, we would suggest that you participate today and rest tomorrow. Today, we would like to take you on a drive into the northwestern corner of
Slovenia, and in particular Slovenia’s Triglavski national park, which is Slovenia’s only national park. The park was named after Triglav, the highest mountain in the heart of the park, which is also the highest summit in Slovenia (2864 m). The Triglavski is an area of unspoiled beauty and gorgeous roads. You will drive there from Carinthia and cross the Wurzenpass to enter Slovenia and from there, only a few
kilometers away from the border, you will enter the park and cross it on a spectacular road. You will arrive in Kobarid where, together with a local family that we know, we have arranged a special meal and experience for you. In mid-afternoon, you will begin your return journey along a different route that will take you, briefly, into Italy before returning to Carinthia.

Today you will enter a region called Tyrol that is centered in the West of today’s Austria. Nowadays, Tyrol is divided into three parts, two of which – Tyrol and East Tyrol – remain within the borders of Austria. The third is South Tyrol: it became the northern-most province of Italy after the first world war. From the Almdorf you will be driving mostly due West in a valley called “Val Pusteria”: roughly speaking, to your north will be the ‘Central Alps’ with its enormous peaks (something to look forward to on days 9 and 10) and to your south the “Southern Alps”. The roads are beautifully paved, mostly gently winding and a joy to drive. When you enter South Tyrol after lunch you will begin to sense that you are entering a different world, one that gently

scents in the air! It will be well worth your while to stay here for three nights! For the last two hours of your drive, we’ve chosen for you a mixture of highway and a stunning, small mountain road that will take you to Merano, a
small town situated in a basin surrounded by peaks up to 3,335m tall. From Merano, you will ascend towards the mountains surrounding it to arrive your hotel for the next three nights. p81
Day 8 In South Tyrol: A beautiful drive & local experiences South Tyrol with its mild southern climate, stunning mountains, traditions and culinary delights, offers something for everyone. Since you will have two full days in South Tyrol, we have created a program for this first day, but have decided simply to give you various activity options for the following day. Today, we suggest to take you into a little known valley called the Sarnthal such that you can get a glimpse of the uniqueness of South Tyrolean traditions and way of living. In the morning, it will be a short drive from Merano either via the highway or a small country road to the Sarnthal. There you will spend the better part of the day. Besides a very local lunch as South Tyrolean
farmers have enjoyed for as long as they can think back, we would like to introduce you to a producer of fragrant, essential oils made from a species of pines that are up to one thousand years old and to take you to a manufactory of exquisite embroideries that are produced with the feathers of birds. (This is an artisanal handicraft that is centuries old.) Time permitting we will also make a stop at a historic South Tyrolean farmhouse for a guided tour. In the later afternoon, we will drive back to Merano across two spectacular mountain passes and along true back roads: beautifully paved and more or less empty of cars.

Upon returning to the hotel, you will have free time until dinner. Since we will be returning to the same hotel, you are of course also free to opt out of today’s drive and activities. We kindly request that you please let us know in advance if you do not plan to participate. p83
Day 9 In and Around South Tyrol – Relexation? Wine? Iceman? Markets? Shopping? For your second day in South Tyrol, we would like to give you a number of options to enjoy. Here are some of them: • A visit to Ötzi, the “Ice Man”, a well-preserved mummy of a man who lived around 3,300 BC. He is kept at icy temperatures in the South Tyrol museum of Archeology… an amazing exhibition! • A lunch at an Alpine restaurant, high above Merano, surrounded by beautiful summer meadows and forests. • A wine tasting to sample the many exquisite wines South Tyrol produces. • A visit to an artisan who produces one of South Tyrol’s specialties: unique wood carvings. • An excursion to downtown Merano for shopping of international products or a
stroll through local markets • Or, why not stay at the hotel, relax, read a book, enjoy a spa and the tranquil, Alpine surroundings? Not all of these activities can be easily combined. We will discuss these options further during the journey.

Day 10 South Tyrol/Italy to Brigels/Switzerland – Stelvio Day
that may be. If the weather is forecast to be beautiful, we would recommend departing very early…but lets discuss this closer to the time.
Once across the Stelvio and the Umbrail pass in Switzerland, you enter one of Switzerland’s largest Cantons called Grison Weather permitting, you can look (or Graubuenden in German). forward to a spectacular driving Grison is home to famous Swiss day since you will cross three resorts such as St. Moritz and beautiful passes, the Stelvio pass Davos; but we will stay clear of (in German called “Stilfersjoch”), them since they are very touristy the Umbrail and the Albula. and, at any rate, not a good stopping place for us. It is not only renowned for excellent cuisine. beloved by bikers and driving lovers, but also by sports aficionados, especially cyclists. Today you will leave behind South Tyrol and enter into Switzerland.
But beware: its switchback and hairpin turns can be treacherous and, if it is a beautiful day, there could be quite a bit of traffic, especially mountain bikers, some of whom are hell-bent on proving something, whatever p86

Day 11 Brigels to Gstaad: Into the heart of Switzerland And you thought you’ve seen mountains and driven mountain passes?! Yes, you have, but there is more to come: today you’ll not only cross three of Switzerland’s most beautiful passes, but you’ll also drive from the country’s South-East to its South-West – Switzerland is a small country! – and with this from the German-speaking side to the outskirts of the French speaking side. In the morning, you’ll cross two of the passes – first the Oberalp, then the Furka – and end up for lunch on top of the third, the Grimselpass. Along the Oberalp pass (topping out at 2044m) runs an amazing railway; if you’re lucky, you may catch a glimpse of it. The Furka pass, at 2,427m, is the 4th highest paved mountain pass in Switzerland and a joy to drive. The vistas are breathtaking and become grander and grander as you ascend.
The “Grimsel” area is the heart of Switzerland’s hydroelectric power generation: 9 plants, fed by 8 lakes, generate enough electricity for 1 million people, 2,350GWh per year in total. We will eat lunch just a few minutes away from the Grimselpass. While the morning drive will be filled with mountains and passes, after lunch you will descend into lower country and drive along two wellknown lakes – Brienzersee and Thunersee. The drive is lovely, but do prepare yourself for the possibility of some dense traffic along parts of the roads by the lakes. The final few kilometres to Gstaad will be very enjoyable. Your hotel, The Alpina for two nights, is one of Gstaad’s grandest, and sits in a magnificent location, up on a hill overlooking the village.

Day 12 In and around Gstaad – The Italian Job! Today you will have two fundamental choices to make: will you participate in the “Italian Job” drive or relax in Gstaad? If you decide to stay in Gstaad, here are some of the things you can consider to fill your day (it won’t be difficult!): • The Alpina hotel has excellent Spa facilities to pamper yourself during part of the day • The region around Gstaad offers many opportunities to go for gentle walks in the hills and along the shores of the lakes in this region • The village of Gstaad is picturesque and full of shopping opportunities, both for local handicraft and products as well as international brands • ---If you do decide to drive the Italian Job, you’re in for a p88
Timing Breakfast at your leisure at your hotel
delightful adventure including, if you would like, two special visits. One thing you must bear in mind, though: this will require a relatively early start at around 8am. The drive across the Italian job begins with an enjoyable section through the Parc naturel régional Gruyère Paysd’Enhaut and then continues, near Martigny, on a highway through the Great St Bernard Tunnel into Italy. Shortly after emerging from the tunnel, you will reverse direction by getting onto the old national road that takes you across the mountain pass…it is this ascent that is featured in the opening scenes of the 1969 The Italian Job movie. This mountain pass (which is the border point between Italy and Switzerland) is also famous
You will then begin the descent on the Swiss side of the mountain and drive on to Martigny for lunch. In the afternoon, we recommend visiting Glacier3000, a lookout 3,000m above sea level that will afford you the finest view of the Alps along your journey. You reach the lookout by cable car. for the beautiful Saint Bernard Dogs which were created in the 17th century at the Grand Saint Bernard Hospiz.(Time permitting, you will want to visit it!) The breed was originally raised to provide guard dogs for the hospice before they became mountain rescue dogs. Specially bred and trained for the latter role, the St. Bernards were sufficiently strong to be able to cross deep snow drifts and had the capacity to track lost travelers by scent.
To conclude the day’s driving journey, it is but another 20min back to your hotel. In the evening we have a very special dinner organized for you.
The following time table is for those who wish to participate in the drive across the Grand Saint Bernhard (Italian Job) pass and also visit the Glacier3000 – from where you will have one of the finest views of the Alps!

Duration: 5 hours Hotel The Alpina
Day 13 Gstaad to Black Forest – Germany’s finest… Today you will get a glimpse of Germany’s well-known Black Forest region that lies in the country’s South West bordering on France and Switzerland. It is a region of many mountains of moderate elevation that are largely covered with beautiful forests. In contrast to the ragged, tall and imposing mountains of Austria, South Tyrol and Switzerland, those of the Black Forest are rolling, inviting and charming. The region offers many wonderful dishes. The most famous of them all is the Schwarzwälderkirschtorte or “Black Forest Cake”. Interestingly, the cake is named not directly after the Black Forest region but rather after a specialty liquor of that region known as Schwarzwälder Kirsch(wasser) and is distilled from tart cherries.
Depending on your appetite for driving on this second to last day of your journey, we can choose more or fewer of the beautiful back roads that crisscross the Black Forest region. If the answer is “more”, these roads are a plenty; if the answer is “fewer”, then we can always escape onto the Baselto-Baden-Baden highway that offers good opportunities for “making a run”, traffic conditions permitting. Your hotel for the night is the finest in Baden-Baden, a well-known hot spring area in Germany. The Brenners hotel celebrates what in Germany is taken to be the good life: elegance, “wellness” (which is the term they use for “Spa”), and fine food.

Day 14 Black Forest to Munich – Return to Munich at last… The last day of the journey has arrived. The driving time between morning and afternoon is evenly divided, but there is one big difference: in the morning you will be able to enjoy, one last time, country roads as you leave the Black Forest; the afternoon will be spent entirely on the Stuttgart to Munich highway. While we would like to send you off with a highlight of driving experience, we will likely have to disappoint you: yes, you can enjoy your car on a German highway, but this stretch of the Autobahn will allow you to “go for it” only a few times, if at all because the Stuttgart to Munich corridor is busy at the best of times!
