FLORAL COMPETITION Located in the Atrium Lobby, the Floral Competition displays amazing artistry of the area’s best—and most innovative—designers and florists. For a full list of competitors, please turn to page 40.

CITY LIVING For those living in a condo or apartment, the City Living area on the Skybridge features ten imaginative vignettes by retail nurseries and landscape designers. Learn to create welcoming outdoor environments working with limited space for a cozy retreat you'll love to call "home." For a full list of participants, please see page 41.

FOOD AND BEVERAGE For the first time, showgoers can take in the sights or shop the aisles with their beverage-of-choice in hand, including cocktails, wines and beers. Few “hot spots” can claim a signature cocktail garnished with an edible flower — but the Northwest Flower & Garden Show can! Savor tasty new and expanded food offerings available throughout the show, including specialty platters, gourmet sandwiches and burgers, fresh-baked pastries and more.

For a full breakdown of all the new food and beverage options at the show, please see page 46. Returning for its second year, the crowd-pleasing “Garden Wars” charity event will have showgoers cheering on their favorite news anchors and media personalities as they scramble to create gardens “on-the-clock.” All the fun takes place daily from 1pm to 3pm in the North Hall.

GREAT PLANT PICKS If you’re planting a new garden—or looking to add new plants to spice up an existing one—a visit to Great Plant Picks (GPP) should be on your “to do” list when you visit the show. Located on the Garden Floor, this year’s display includes an outstanding selection of plants that will brighten up even the toughest of shady spots in your yard. Designed by horticulturist Richie Steffen, the list of the 2017 GPP’s selection of perennials, bulbs, shrubs and trees is a must to take along shopping at your favorite nursery. The lavish planted containers will give you “Bright Ideas for Shade” and their website offers detailed information about the plants’ outstanding qualities, growth habits and culture. Don't go shopping without it! Great Plant Picks is an educational program of the Elisabeth C. Miller Botanical Garden. It debuted in 2001 with the first recommendations for a comprehensive palette of outstanding plants for our region’s maritime climate. The only program of its kind in the Pacific Northwest, selected plants are chosen by committees of professional horticulturists from Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia.

NEW PLANT PATIO New plant varieties are introduced by local growers each year, and the show is pleased to spotlight them in the first-ever “New Plant Patio,” located in the North Hall. Provided by vendors in the show’s Plant Market, the varieties on display have been introduced since February 2016. In this one-stop showcase, plants are labeled with their common and Latin names, their suggested retail price and of course, where they can be purchased. Many of the plants will be available for sale at the show, so look for the booth number of the vendor and make your way to the Plant Market for the next new addition to your garden! AFTERNOON TEA WITH MRS. PUMPHREY Mrs. Pumphrey is about to host a tea party, but there’s plenty of activities in store for both adults, children and Fairies in this enchanting garden. The classic Tudor-style residence entry is complemented by a formal “knot garden” incorporating hedgerows of Japanese holly surrounding fruit trees and a “woven” planting of blooming plants and bulbs. You don’t want to be tardy for the party, so take the flagstone path to the rear of the house. There you’ll find the centerpiece of the garden—a spacious patio accented by a tiered fountain and framed by plantings of shrubs, perennials and bulbs.

HANAMI 花見 — SAVORING SPRING This scene captures the design and spirit of a rural domestic scene in a miniature space, inspired by a traditional thatched roofed Japanese farmhouse (minka) and garden. And it’s a special time to visit—the annual spring viewing of the cherry blossoms, or hanami.

PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD VOTING

The picturesque Amalfi Coast of southern Italy is the inspiration for this garden—a celebration of Italian cuisine and the earth’s bounty. Not surprisingly, this romantic villa retreat spotlights edible fruits common to that region—grape, fig, olive, lemon—plus an herb garden parterre.

The carefully selected color palette of materials adds to the regional authenticity, from the structured walls to the color of the pavement. Natural stone, and a rough stone wall, create an inviting setting for a leisurely picnic beneath a lovely, vine-covered arbor. There’s a modern touch, too: a built-in pizza oven. After all, some say the Almalfi Coast serves up Italy’s best pizza! The soothing sound of flowing water from a bubbling jardinière and wall fountain enhance the overall experience, making it a day to remember. “Take-home ideas” for your own garden: The bubbler water feature uses little water and works in tight spaces; permeable paving also conserves water. It’s a bug’s life in this pesticide-free environment—where beneficial bugs recycle organic material, control pests and pollinate flowers.

Taking a humorous, cartoon-like approach, this garden is divided into an upper level, representing a bug’s eye view of the human sized world, and a lower level where their world is magnified. Our insect friends are at work throughout the garden. ”Sanitation engineers”—a motley crew of beetles, centipedes, worms and other essential composters—hang out in the Compost Café (represented by an old bed-spring planted with strawberries and other perennials).

HONEY! WE SHRUNK THE FARM: URBAN FARMING IN STYLE

PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD VOTING

Whether you have a very small space or a large yard, this garden serves up plenty of ideas for growing food in ways you might not expect. For year around harvests, the hoop house has shelving for sprout growing, in-ground edible plants, and an aquaponic system so fish and vegetables can be produced in the same place. Espaliered fruit trees do double duty: serving as edible fencing and a source of produce.

A VICTORY GARDEN This garden literally weaves historic elements dating from Elizabethan times to the Second World War. The result—a classic design meets the modern functionality of edible gardening.

The formal “knot garden” design features ornamentals and was first popularized by the English and French—often inspired by a rug or tapestry in their mansions. DESIGN TIPS 

It must be a lot of work Our property is on a quarter acre, a generous size for our area. Every few weeks, I take my coffee with me and stroll the length of the garden, familiarizing myself with the news of the day, making mental notes if I see anything I would like to give attention to, and just enjoying what I find. I have put in the time to encourage the yard to work for itself, with minimal support from me. Here are some examples: 1. Built the garden up with compost to feed new plants and retain moisture while they establish 2. Used drought-tolerant seed mix on the small lawn area

The most useful garden tool you can own

3. Used ground covers liberally to create a living mulch that suppresses weeds, holds moisture 4. Chose native plants and plants from similar climates 5. Keep lawn as high as possible, mowing infrequently with an electric string trimmer

6. Collect rainwater

Techniques you can trust

7. Mulch with compost from chicken droppings and yard waste 8. Use “right plant, right place” strategy 9. Encourage birds and insects to be the pestmanagement system 10. Use organic fertilizer for fruiting shrubs and trees. Everything else gets composted. —by Manda Galbraith, who gardens

SHOW FEATURES

MARKETPLACE FROM TASTEFUL AND TASTY TO FUNCTIONAL, THE “MARKETPLACE” OFFERS UNPARALLELED VARIETY OF PRODUCTS AND GIFTS Savvy shoppers know the show’s popular Marketplace is a shopping destination where you’ll find tasteful art for the home and garden, plants, bulbs and seeds, one-of-a-kind clothing and accessories, clever tools, artisan food products and much more. With over 350 top-notch vendors from throughout the U.S and Canada, the Marketplace offers an unparalleled selection of products and gifts. Here’s a sampling of new or unusual offerings from vendors in 2017: Making its debut at the show, VEGEPOD (booth #2545) features the latest advancements in raised bed container gardening. The Australian-based company’s “pods” take the guesswork out of growing flowers or edibles with its self-watering technology and protective covers to manage temperature—and plants— from pests and UV.

STUDIO BRIDGES (booth #1301)

represents the collaboration of Deborah & Casey Bridges, the mother and son artisan team from Grass Valley, CA. Their original sculptures are inspired by deities of the East—monumental Buddhas, temple sculptures and other images.

Visit the display of colorful, whimsical and vibrant paintings of flowers and animals by garden artists CARRIE TASMAN & JENNIFER LOMMERS (booth #2116). Their artwork combines contemporary brilliant florals with passionate patterns of color and depth.

GROWOYA PLANT IRRIGATION

page PAGE40 40 //

KILTER FOODS of Seattle (booth #2812) spotlights its spicy ketchup: Bear’s Breath! With a subtle yet bold finish, this unique lowsugar ketchup alternative is made with natural ingredients.

ENGAYLA (booth #113) features stylish “wearable art,” handmade in Seattle, including women’s clothing, leather bags, belts and an array of quality accessories. Seatte’s SHIPWRECK HONEY (booth #2167) produces “all things honeybee.” Diligently crafted in nature by bees and lovingly hand-milled by their beekeeper, artisan products include beeswax-based soap, soothing natural lip balms, bath comforts plus delicious local honey.

SWARM PORTLAND (booth #2133)

offers a variety of items to create a backyard bee refuge. The company’s hexagon-shaped “Bee Beds” turn any garden space into a bee sanctuary, complemented by bee/pollinatorfriendly annual and perennial seeds and plant starters.

LI’L SPROUT NURSERY (booth #2217), from Mill Creek, will carry a variety of bare root trees, landscape plugs, carry-home “mini” conifers, and a selection of delicate solarpowered “Firefly” lights to brighten up evenings in the yard and garden. New to the show, the BAMBOO GARDEN (booth #2444) hails from North Plains, OR, offering an inventory of potted bamboo plants selected for hardiness to match our climate in the Pacific Northwest. From Pine Grove, CA, artist ANDY BYRNE (booth #1018) showcases creative and artistic expression in metalwork that incorporates recycled materials into unique sculptural creations. Byrne creates provocative art from steel based on geometric design elements.

LEN’S FABRICATION from Newman

Lake, WA (booth #508) fashions beautiful and handcrafted decorative gates and railings. Nature-themed metalwork motifs include privacy panels of aspen groves, flowing branch designs with stylized pine cones and dragonflies, and other handworked creations.

(booth #706) is a modern “take” on an ancient form of plant irrigation: ollas. These terra cotta pots are great for growing edibles in a small space: saving water, saving time and making growing easier. NORTHWEST FLOWER & GARDEN SHOW // OFFICIAL SHOW GUIDE
