“Swiss Family Robinson” has inspired this year’s PlayGarden, the show’s interactive feature for children and their parents. Developed with the Seattle Children’s PlayGarden (childrensplaygarden.org), it’s a fun-filled environment where children can play, learn and take something home. Low-level treehouses with access for all, a bamboo grove, sandy sensory tables with seashells, and vegetables for digging and planting are among the many handson activities. Kids can take home seeds planted in coconut shells and whimsical “pantyhose grass heads.” Adding to the festivities are daily performances at the Sprout Stage, featuring children’s singer/songwriters Caspar Babypants, Recess Monkey, Nancy Stewart, and Your Imaginary Friend. California Dreaming “A state somewhere between fantasy and reality.” Direct from the movie poster, this line captures the spirit of 1970s “California.” The style, primary color schemes and carefree nature of the era are represented through plantings and well-placed props — including a surfboard or two. You’ll be transported to sunnier climes through the liberal use of palm trees, while drought-tolerant, lowmaintenance plants are the perfect complement to an active lifestyle. Disco Fever! Disco balls in a formal stone pond, innovative use of multilevel lighting, pillarlike Italian cypress trees and a mix of evergreen and blooming plants accent the festive patio setting. You can safely visit your closet and dig out that old leisure suit without feeling guilty.

Honey, I Shrunk the Yard You won’t have to worry where your pintsize kids wandered off to in this 560-squarefoot space. From a deck, showgoers view lighthearted yet functional features — a working pizza oven, multiactivity wall, putting green and “insect” sculpture — plus an outstanding array of plantings. Most notable: a gnarly 50-year-old cutleaf sumac tree. In a Garden Far, Far Away An Edible Forest Sanctuary This garden symbolizes a contemporary “food rebellion” and a noble quest for edible forest gardening. It emphasizes working with our environment to create systems of plantings that naturally support each other. Salvaged timbers support treehouses, decks and planting containers. Stone and other organic materials are used to defi define ne multiple vertical levels and pathways.

It s All in the Movies Classic fi film lm genres — Western, romance, and black & white — are represented here. The Western garden uses drought-tolerant plantings, a hitchin’ post and scattered bows and arrows. A large gazebo surrounded by fl flowers owers is the perfect setting for a lover’s rendezvous. The “black & white” theme is executed through materials, plantings and light.

It’s Only Natural

Enhanced by the use of light, shadow and plant selections, touches of fi film lm noir abound: the urban setting (use of repurposed metal) and a living area with appropriate motifs (venetian blinds and mirrors casting grids of moody light). Blue-toned plants are punctuated with dark and light plants — with touches of red to suggest a plot twist!

Renewal: Enchanted April in the Northwest “Enchanted April,” originally set in an Italian villa, inspired this version set in a fi fictional ctional Pacifi Pacificc Northwest resort. The storylines are shared: Gardens offer a place for relaxation, reflecreflection and restoration. Bulb blooms and lush foliage accent the garden’s informal seating areas; other accents include a distinctive iron fence, a bronze-fi bronze-finished nished pergola and a lustrous “pool” of vintage glass.

The Lost Gardener A Journey From the Wild to the Cultivated A common theme in “Jurassic Park,” “King Kong” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark” is our desire for the newest, rarest and most unusual. These two neighboring gardens portray how opposites attract. “She” lives in a ’50s-style, ultra-feminine environment surrounded by a colorful garden. “He” relishes their lively telephone repartee while ensconced in his favorite chair. “His” garden is simple and the perfect backdrop for an evening cocktail. The two are separated by only a white picket fence, so you can assume there’s a sequel in the works.

We would not be able to stage a production of this complexity without Marenakos Rock Center, of Issaquah, and Sawdust Supply Company, Inc., of Seattle. They provide key materials necessary to create the amazing display gardens and other show attractions. Some jaw-dropping statistics underscore their contributions to the show: • For the past 24 years, Marenakos (marenakos.com) has moved 30 million pounds of rock in and out of the show. • Founded in 1912, Sawdust Supply Company (sawdustsupply.com) will deliver an estimated 90 truckloads of sawdust and mulch to the show in 2013. Both of these outstanding companies serve the public and commercial customers year-round. Their tireless efforts before, during and after the show help make this event a reality.

We’ve got the plants, garden supplies & tools, plus the friendliest experts to help you be successful & to inspire your gardening.

Media partners Lights, camera, action! Our media sponsors play a key role in getting the word out about the show. For many years, this show has worked closely with The Seattle Times (seattletimes.com) to develop special sections and show programs to help attendees plan and schedule their day (or days!) at the show. King5 (king5.com) and its Home Team have provided support through its programming lineup and on-air personalities. For more information on all of the partners, visit gardenshow.com/the-show/ sponsors.

Subaru owners know that their car is not only built to last — it was built to handle whatever the weather dishes out: rain, wind, snow and even the occasional cyclone if you find fi nd yourself in the Land of Oz. Subaru (subaru.com) embraces the show’s 2013 Tinseltown-fl Tinseltown-flavored avored theme by showcasing a colorful garden on the Skybridge. “Taking You By Storm” draws its inspiration from the classic book “The Wizard of Oz.” Dorothy, Toto, Tin Man, Lion and Scarecrow will be relying on their trusty Subaru to get them out of the whirling storm to safety. They don’t need a magical good witch — they have the all-new 2014 Subaru Forester. Be sure to see all the giveaways (including colorful poppy seeds) and enter to win a very special prize. Click your ruby slippers as Subaru presents “There’s No Place Like Home — and the Great Outdoors!” in the South Lobby. Surrounded by a garden of blazing poppies, the all-new Subaru Forester stands ready for its journey to the Emerald City. Families can have their photo taken with mockups of the Oz characters, and they will be able to automatically send their photo to email or various social-media sites. Subaru continues a proud tradition of presenting highly regarded speakers at the Northwest Flower & Garden Show (see seminar schedule on page 4).
