Plymouth Roadrunner a hit in past car shows By CLINTON DICK Herald Staff Writer
Wile E. Coyote could never quite catch the Roadrunner in the hit Warner Brothers’ cartoon series “Looney Tunes.” The scheming coyote would probably have just as much trouble trying to catch Ron Heberling’s four-speed 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner. Heberling, Overbrook, has been to the Ol’ Marais River Run at least 10 times in the past, he said, and has brought his Roadrunner several times to Ottawa. “I’ve probably got the dash plaques [from the River Run] to count at home,” Heberling said with a laugh. “We really enjoy it. We’ve already pre-entered [this year].” The vibrant green antique was one of several cars on display during Ottawa’s 150th celebration Sept. 6 in Forest Park, 320 N. Locust St., Ottawa. While Heberling said he currently is working on a 1957 DeSoto to bring to this year’s River Run, Friday through Sunday at Forest Park,

he did say that his Roadrunner is a family favorite and has seen a lot of action since being restored. Heberling and his family have had the Roadrunner for about 15 years, including three to four years of getting it into shape and another eight to 10 years of driving it, he said. “When I found out about it, it was up in the Seneca, Sabetha area,” he said. “It was a project car. Basically, we rebuilt it from front to back. My brother painted it, and I did the metal work.” The paint work features the classic Looney Tunes cartoon Roadrunner on each side, and Heberling even created a cardboard cutout of the character to pin up next to the car during shows. That is a big attraction for the younger crowd, he Photo by Clinton Dick/ The Ottawa Herald said. “The kids get a kick out of the Ron Heberling, Overbrook, poses Sept. 6 with a cardboard cutout of the “Looney roadrunner,” Heberling said. “They Tunes” Roadrunner character and his 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner during Ottawa’s like to sometimes take a picture 150th celebration in Forest Park, 320 N. ROADRUNNER: Fun to drive, one of the favorites in the car show (Continued from Page 3) with the big roadrunner cutout.” His son, Jesse, 34, Overbrook, also restores antique cars. Jesse has restored three or four cars, while Heberling himself has restored seven with two currently in the project stage, he said. “It’s hard to get rid of them once you fix them all up,” he said with a laugh. “I’ve had six of the seven down here in Ottawa at different
shows. (The Roadrunner) has seen more. It’s kind of the favorite. It is a four-speed car, so it is fun to drive.” Fixing up antique cars has been kind of a life-long hobby for Heberling, he said. He began restoring his first car when he was in high school in the 1960s. Along with his son, his wife, Mary, and brother are all fans of classic cars, he said. Heberling also sticks close to several of those who enjoy going to antique car shows from his area as well. During Ottawa’s 150th celebration,

Heberling cruised into Forest Park in his Roadrunner with a group. “There are about six of us from the Carbondale/Overbrook area and we like to just kind of get together to go to shows,” he said. “We don’t have a name. It’s kind of neat in a little place like that for all of us to get together and we all come to the show together.” The choice to bring the Roadrunner down to Ottawa for the 150th celebration was easy, Heberling said. After a long trip back to Kansas the day before, the car was ready to go.
“We just got back from Colorado the night before,” he said. “I took it out there and we didn’t even know about this until late last night [Sept. 5].” Heberling is excited to come down to the River Run again this year, he said. “It’s such a pretty park,” he said. “We can sit around, visit and you get to see people that you might only see once a year.” Not even Wile E. Coyote could ruin a day like that.

Artwork features iconic vehicle to be inclusive By DYLAN LYSEN Herald Staff Writer
Another Ol’ Marais River Run car show, another car show logo for the event. This year, the 28th annual Ol’ Marais River Run car show, shows off the event with a new logo that features a black 1957 Chevrolet driving through in front of the historic downtown buildings, including the Plaza Cinema, possibly the oldest movie theater in the United States. The use of the ’57 Chevy is significant, Ralph Finch, one of the organizers for the event, said. The classic car is one of – if not the most – iconic historic America muscle cars, he said. But through the 28 years the
event has been held in Ottawa, this year is the first time the classic car was depicted on the event’s artwork, Finch said. Eddie Clark, a former president of the event, thought it would be a good choice to feature the classic vehicle, he said. “When we looked at the artwork from the last 27 years, there wasn’t a ’57 Chevy in there, and it’s one of the icons of the classic cars,” Finch said. “We wanted to [add] downtown and the Plaza theater, and that just happened, we luckily did it on the 150th celebration. So we got lucky there.” Finch said he did not know who the artist was for this year’s artwork, but believes it was a See ARTWORK, Page 11

possible family member of Eddie Clark. He said, although the event has a long history, only a small amount of artists have been used to create the artwork. “We’ve had seven or eight different artists who have done artwork for us,” Finch said. Adding the ’57 Chevy wasn’t a hard decision, Finch said. It seems the organizers just overlooked using the car for the artwork in the past. “We probably had most of them, for some reason we just didn’t have the ’57 Chevy. We overlooked it,” Finch said. “Everybody thinks the ultimate hot rod is a ’32 Ford, but we’ve had them on there several times.”
The artwork can be tricky, Finch said, because there are so many cars to choose from. He said the artwork tries to be inclusive and eventually get cars in there that everyone likes. “We try to be fair to everybody,” Finch said. “We also try to use different makes, because you have people who are really into Plymouths, some are into Chevys, some are into Fords. We try to include everybody so no one feels like they’ve been slighted.” The reason for the new artwork every year is to give each event its own identity. It also helps with some other aspects of the event, Finch said. “Well, it helps with shirt sales,” Finch said with a laugh. “It’s just a different look every year.”
