WELCOME to the Ottawa area
Take a stroll through Ottawa’s historic downtown area, and you’ll be greeted by the sights and scents of the beautiful flowers that adorn each street corner. These vibrant marigolds, delicate pansies, and cheerful sunflowers are carefully tended by volunteers who, like many other Ottawans, believe keeping their city beautiful is part of their personal commitment to lighting the way for the community. While Ottawa’s picturesque architecture and landscaping are some of the first qualities visitors notice about the city, its merits go far beyond its aesthetics. Here in Ottawa, providing economic, recreational and cultural opportunities for the community is at the core of our priorities. The city’s rich heritage is a proud, well-preserved part of its identity. Our citizens strive to make Ottawa a welcoming place for visitors through both amenities and a friendly atmosphere. Making Ottawa the best place possible to live, work and visit matters to us. Our commitment to prosperity has brought many of the advantages of a much larger city to Ottawa. Yet, the city’s warmth and the welcoming atmosphere of a small town remain one of the strongest and proudest aspects of its identity.

HISTORY
The city’s namesake, the Ottawa Indians, were moved to the area that is now Franklin County from Ohio in 1837. The Ottawa found the land around the Marais des Cygnes River was exceptionally conducive to farming and ranching, and white settlers began establishing homes in the promising area. In 1867, Ottawa was incorporated as a city after the Ottawa exchanged 20,000 acres of their land for the promise of a school for the tribe’s children. Today, that school is Ottawa University. In 1864, Ottawa was named the Franklin County seat of Kansas government, and with this title came prosperity and opportunity. The railroad came to Ottawa and storefronts rose along Main Street as the economy sparked. In the late 1800s, Ottawa became host to an independent Chautauqua assembly, part of the famous national adult education effort, held on the banks of the Marais des Cygnes. While this river was a vital resource for Ottawans, the Marais des Cygnes often turned against them as it frequently flooded crops, homes, and businesses. After the devastating flood of 1951 destroyed one third of the city, the resilient Ottawans rebuilt our town. In the years after, several highways cut through the city, an extensive flood control system prevented future disasters, and the economic stimulus of the Kansas City metro area bolstered Ottawa’s industry. The promise and prosperity that arose after this catastrophe serves a testament to the dedication of Ottawans to our community.

RECREATION
The Marais des Cygnes flood control system, built in the 1960s, brought comfort and security to business and homeowners and a popular new recreational destination. Just 15 minutes west of Ottawa in Osage County, Pomona Lake provides More than 3,800 acres of water and a surrounding state park for ample outdoor activities. The surrounding park boasts many campgrounds and fishing, boating and hunting opportunities abound. Nearby Melvern Lake, Clinton Lake, Hillsdale Lake, Redmond Reservoir and Perry Lake are all within an hour’s drive of Ottawa. With more than 100 acres of parks, there are many locations for outdoor recreation within the city’s limits as well. Forest Park, Ottawa’s largest park, features five lighted tennis courts, 18 horseshoe courts, a basketball court, lighted softball diamonds, and four playgrounds. Two shelter houses can be reserved for special events. The park is also home to a full-sized municipal swimming pool and water park that hosts swimming lessons and features a number of slides and attractions. Kanza Park offers a newly-constructed playground, a one-mile walking trail, and a professionallydesigned 18-hole disc golf course. The park is adjacent to the Prairie Spirit Rail-Trail, which runs more than 50 miles south along the former railway bed to Iola. The main trailhead is in Ottawa and is one of Kansas’s newest state parks. In the heart of downtown Ottawa, Ottawa’s City Park blossoms in the summertime as its gazebo hosts musical performances by the city band, weddings and other events. The park’s playground, picnic facilities, and historic log cabin are beloved by local families. The 11 mixed-use ball fields at the Orlis Cox Sports Complex host teams from local schools and the Ottawa Recreation Commission. The ORC offers programs for everyone from toddlers to seniors in sports, arts, special skills, physical fitness and much more. Two recreational facilities - - both with new attractions for the community – keep Ottawans healthy and happy throughout the year. The faithful Don Woodward Community Center welcomed new playground equipment for both indoor and outdoor use in 2012. In 2011, the state-of-the-art Goppert Building opened its doors and was warmly received by the community. The 23,000 square-foot community recreation center features an indoor walking track, exercise equipment, a gymnasium, and fitness classes.

ENTERTAINMENT & CULTURE
For those who prefer artistry over athleticism, Ottawa offers a myriad opportunities to enjoy cultural activities. The picturesque Carnegie Cultural Center’s architecture is a visual pleasure in itself. Inside, the center hosts art exhibits, musical productions and art classes. Ottawa’s Suzuki Strings group practices here and hosts performances throughout the year. The Ottawa Municipal Auditorium has a reputation for hosting up-and-coming stars throughout its long life. Today, the OMA presents a variety of musical and theatrical productions by ACT Ottawa, local schools and national touring acts. Whether it’s a comedy or a drama, an orchestral performance or a choral show, Ottawa University hosts programs for a range of tastes throughout the year. In the Larry Peters Memorial Theater, Ottawa University Theater showcases the talent of OU students and community members. No visit to Ottawa is complete without a visit to Ottawa’s historic two screen Plaza Grill & Cinema, which features new release movies and other special events throughout the year. An array of service and civic service clubs give Ottawans the chance to connect socially and professionally. Whether you want to promote local business, help the county’s disadvantaged, or just enjoy the good company these groups bring, Ottawa offers an organization that satisfies your goals. Religious practices and beliefs play a vital role in the lives of many Ottawans who worship in the area’s numerous churches. With more than 80 houses of faith in Franklin County, these institutions welcome residents and visitors to lively contemporary services, peaceful traditional sermons, and more forms of worship. Those who desire to participate in worship, mission projects or community service have ample chances to suit their religious preferences in Franklin County.

The community’s dedication to the future is reflected in Ottawa’s commitment to education. Excellent schools feature extensive facilities, diverse curriculum and a highly qualified staff, all aimed at developing each young person’s full potential. Ottawa Schools are student-centered with high academic achievement expectations. To support those expectations we maintain a strong focus on core academic programs, practical exploratory programs, technical preparation and co-curricular activities. District curriculum is continually assessed, reviewed and revised as needed to be in alignment with state and national standards. The Ottawa School District integrates technology into the curriculum. State-of-the-art interactive hands-on, minds-on SMART Boards in all elementary schools bring primary education to the cutting edge of technology and makes learning fun. Wireless air slates used at the secondary levels make learning more interactive for the students and allow teachers up-to-the-minute resources in classroom teaching. One of our most valuable resources is the parental and community support our schools receive. With voters passing a school bond, the district has been able to build a new elementary school, renovate and expand an existing elementary school, add classroom space and renovate the athletic facilities at our high school and acquire land for future growth. The Ottawa School District partners with the community to offer the best education possible for our students. Our mission is to give students a top-notch education with an emphasis on community service in order to reach their individual potential and become productive members of society.

EDUCATION Since the city’s beginnings, when the Ottawa traded valuable lands for a school, providing a strong education for the area’s children has mattered deeply to the inhabitants of Ottawa and the surrounding areas. Franklin County’s schools foster core academic programs, practical exploratory programs, technical education, extra-curricular activities and a reputation for academic excellence. Ottawa’s school district serves more than 2,500 students. Three elementary schools build academic foundations for more than 1,200 students from kindergarten to fifth grade. More than 500 students from grades 6-8 pass through the middle school each day and 700 high school students proudly call themselves Ottawa Cyclones. Keeping up-to-date with interactive and technology-driven education methods to better prepare students to meet the demands of modern colleges and workplaces is a priority in the Ottawa School District. All elementary classrooms have installed SMART boards and wireless air slates provide more interactivity for secondary students. Franklin County’s other districts are also making strides in promoting digital education. The Central Heights School District, which serves 600 students from Lane, Richmond, Princeton, and Rantoul, issued all of its high school students iPads for the first time this year. Students from Pomona and Williamsburg in the West Franklin School district have the opportunity to participate in a virtual school program at the high school level. The Wellsville School District in northeast Franklin County serves 400 elementary students, 200 middle school students, and almost 250 high school students.

EDUCATION For parents who prefer the teaching methods and personal interaction of a private school education, Ottawa is home to three religiously-affiliated private academies. Sacred Heart Catholic School is open to children of all faiths from grades K-5. Ottawa Christian Academy and Bethel Christian Academy serve kindergarten through 12th grade. The Franklin County community’s educational opportunities and economic stability are deeply enriched by three universities and a community college. Ottawa University has been a cornerstone of the Ottawa community since 1865, when the college was constructed on land the Ottawa Indians gave to the city’s founding settlers. The founders kept their promise to the Ottawa, and the school they built has blossomed into a four-year private liberal arts college that offers many degrees and an MBA program designed for working adults. The university continues to expand and has planned the construction of a new library and student center for 2013. Named one of the most successful community colleges in helping students graduate or transfer to a four-year university nation-wide, Neosho County Community College has seen many exciting achievements in recent years. The Ottawa branch of this Chanute-based institution opened its new campus in March 2011 on K-68 Highway. The 53,000 square-foot building includes new offices, classrooms, and a state-of-the-art simulated hospital. Just 20 miles north of Ottawa are two highly respected universities – the University of Kansas, a state university, and Baker University, a private Christian college. Both universities have been lauded by national publications for their academic and professional programs.

HEALTH CARE
Ottawa is committed to keeping its residents healthy both physically and mentally. At the center of this effort is Ransom Memorial Hospital, a county-owned not-for-profit health care facility accredited by the Joint Commission. In 2011, new remodeling and construction at the main campus have provided more personalized, caring service than ever with new private rooms, a surgery unit, a family birth place and women’s imaging center, and an intensive care unit. Ransom Memorial has a rehabilitative center on Main Street and recently expanded into the Franklin County Annex and the former Ottawa Cancer Center, now the Raymond and Marguerite Gibson Medical Arts Building, to make room for more specialists. In 2012, the hospital achieved an impressive 90% patient satisfaction rating – one of many achievements in the institution’s proud history of excellence. The Elizabeth Layton Center for Hope and Guidance is a resource for residents of Franklin and Miami counties with mental health and substance abuse services. The institution offers treatment for adults, adolescents, children, and families; psychiatric assessments for medication management; psychological evaluations; alcohol and drug abuse treatment; 24-hour crisis management; assessment and referral for inpatient treatment of acute psychiatric illness; community-based services for youth with severe emotional disturbance; and employee assistance programs and education/consultation services for the community.

TRANSPORTATION & INDUSTRY
With direct access to I-35, the “NAFTA Superhighway,” U.S. 59, and K-68 highways, and a position at the southwestern point of the “Golden Triangle,” formed by the KC Metro, Lawrence, and Ottawa, the city’s location allows industry to flourish. The city’s excellent position near these major highways attracted major retailers Walmart and American Eagle Outfitters, which own 2.5 million square feet of distribution facilities in the area. The two logistics centers employ more than 2,200 people combined, and a number of other industries in Ottawa’s industrial park contribute to our stable, prosperous workforce. Ottawa is looking forward to even greater economic prosperity as one project 30 minutes north of Ottawa promises rapid growth in commerce and population. The construction of a 440-acre Burlington Northern Santa Fe intermodal facility and an accompanying 56-acre logistics and distribution park near Edgerton are expected to be completed in late 2013. Ottawa’s economic leaders are planning strategies to attract more industries to conveniently-located Ottawa, as the intermodal facility is expected to create more than 7,000 new jobs. In anticipation of this economic influx, the city plans to expand the runway at Ottawa Municipal Airport to allow larger corporate jets and commercial planes to fly into the facility. The airport recently upgraded the runway to allow heavier planes and small company planes. In 2010, a 11,200 square-foot hangar was constructed at the site. Small businesses also prosper within the city along historic Main Street and other major avenues. Organizations like the Ottawa Main Street Association and Ottawa Chamber of Commerce continuously advocate for current and future businesses lighting the way for our community. The number of Ottawans who shop locally is a testimonial to the community’s commitment to helping our city’s businesses thrive.

TOURISM
Our beautiful downtown area, which is home to many buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, attracts many out-of-town visitors and shoppers. Specialty shops, a movie theater, and cozy restaurants and cafes warmly welcome customers behind Victorian storefronts. Antique lovers especially enjoy our downtown area because of its many antique shops. Shoppers will want to make sure they have plenty of room in their vehicles – you may walk into these charming shops intending to buy a quirky lamp or a rustic wreath and instead come away with a vintage headboard or steamer trunk. Others are drawn to Ottawa by the area’s rich history. Interactive kiosks at each block tell the story of the area’s buildings, built in the late 1800s. The stunning Franklin County Courthouse, designed by famed architect George Washburn, is a can’t-miss local landmark. Near the intersection of Main Street and K-68, a walk into the Old Depot Museum is like stepping back to 1885 in this replica train depot. With fascinating exhibits, a ‘50s style soda fountain, and volunteers who serve as a repository of wonderful stories, the museum is a great way to become immersed in Ottawa’s proud past. The Franklin County Visitor’s Center, a beautiful tribute to Ottawa’s Victorian architecture, should be the first stop for any tourist. Located on K-68 just off of I-35, the center offers brochures, maps and other helpful information. The center also provides maps for driving tours of Franklin County’s picturesque historic landmarks. Be sure to pick up some information on Ottawa’s many beloved annual events while you’re at the Visitor’s Center. The Franklin County Fair, Ol’Marais River Run Car Show, the Mayhem on the Marais des Cygnes Beer Tasting Festival, the Power of the Past Antique Tractor and Machinery Show, the second largest Veterans Day parade in the state, and the lighting of the Mayor’s Christmas Tree are popular events, some long-treasured, some new and promising, that draw in many locals and visitors throughout the year. If you decide to take in one of these wonderful events, chances are your attention won’t just focus on the colorful vehicles, the lively parade atmosphere, or the tempting carnival food. Instead, you’ll notice a lot of friendly smiles, handshakes and conversation. You’ll notice our dedication to our schools, hospitals, cultural life, recreation, economy and peaceful way of life. Ottawans embrace our community and proudly welcome those who pass through because this is our home and we love sharing it with others. So, whether you’re here simply for a visit, or you fell in love with our warmth and charm, enjoy your stay. We’re glad you’re here.
