Wrapping Through the Ages

She who leaves a trail of glitter is not ever forgotten”  —KATE SPADE, BORN DECEMBER 24TH, 1962–2018

FOLLOW US! @OttawaAtHome @Ottawaathomemag @ottawaathomemag

The holiday issue is our gift guide, and this year you might say we have gone a little overboard. It’s my fault, I’ll admit it! I love the fun of scouring the stores and finding inspiration online, hunting for that perfect gift and evidently our team does too. But then, of course, those gifts need wrapping…not so much fun, or is it? I grew up in the 70s and 80s, two juxtaposed decades from a style perspective. My mom was the ultimate 70s mom, which means she was a cool mom before being a cool mom was even a thing! She was a DIYer before anyone even talked about DIY. So when it came to gift wrapping, that woman had it all tied up in the cleverest of ways. She didn’t have a designated wrapping area, or a cupboard or drawer full of tools—what she had was ingenuity along with a little help from my dad. My father’s go-to wrapping paper was the ‘Sunday Funnies’. I can remember the very first time we wrapped a birthday gift from the comic section of the newspaper—I was somewhat horrified because I knew it was because no one thought to buy gift wrap—but when I arrived at the party with my Funnies-wrapped present, everyone oohed and aahed at how clever it was! Naturally, it became a staple in our house, along with cut-up shopping bags and my mother’s favourite wrapping material – tea towels! To this day I have an abundance of tea towels because she still wraps gifts in only the finest of dishtowels. Holiday wrapping also included kitchen twine for ribbon and boughs from trees for bows. I swear Pinterest took inspiration from my very own mother! Fast forward to the 80s and a family Christmas spent in London’s Knightsbridge area, and my mother’s DIY efforts were cast aside by my intrigue with papery shops filled with luxuriously-wrapped gifts and a plethora of embellishment options. I was obsessed with the idea of creating wrapped gifts to coordinate with décor, and continue to be wowed by the beauty of packaging. Being a millennial mom, I recently replaced an unused homework nook with a wrapping station! No matter what your style, we hope you feel inspired and ready to celebrate the season in your own cool way after reading our holiday issue. That’s a wrap,

anya Collins has over 12 years of experience working in the world of interior design under the name of Tanya Collins Interior Design. But it was 18 years ago when she started work on a project that she still calls home! The three-storey Edwardian building was built in 1910 and later converted into a duplex. Tanya and her husband turned it back into a single-family home when they purchased it in 2000. “It had nine-foot ceilings, large windows, and a solid stone foundation, so I knew we had a gem that just needed a lot of polishing,” recalls the talented designer.

GRACIOUS & SPACIOUS The interior boasts spacious hallways, oversized baseboards and casings with hardwood flooring throughout. The renovation process modernized the kitchen, added an ensuite bathroom, and reworked rooms and staircases to suit family living. Now, Tanya has an office and master bedroom on the second floor and her two children each have bedrooms on the third floor. The backdrop provides the ideal base for Tanya to showcase her design style which she says combines the looks of Art Deco and Hollywood Regency. Every room in the house curates a story and nurtures intrigue with objects and books topping tables and ottomans.

A WARM WELCOME The entrance is warm and inviting with a deep red front door leading into a large hallway that offers space for a period dresser and oversized mirror. Both the living room and kitchen are accessed from the entrance. A gallery wall, painted in Benjamin Moore’s Overcoat, holds an intriguing collection of inherited and gifted art works. Tanya claims that a wall of art, “adds not only an air of sophistication, but a focal point, especially when there isn’t a natural one like a fireplace.” The designer has a talent for display. This is evident not only in her home but in the CHEO Lottery Dream Home, where she was the designer for this year’s Minto home in Stittsville. She incorporates a variety of objects of interest within the décor of the dream home with unique table-top and shelving displays. In her own home, Tanya will edit her displays to suit the seasons. As the cooler months approach, she brings in textures like faux-fur pillows and blankets. But her collections of books rarely change. These are her inspirations and tools she uses to influence her work.

JEWEL TONES She uses rich colour with tasteful effects. Dark red velvet curtains offer a hint of drama and add an air of formality to the dining room that opens off of the kitchen and living room. A marble desk separates the living and dining area, while also functioning as a second work station on the main floor. The home is a tribute to the designer’s passion for luxurious items paired with much-loved treasures. It offers visitors the chance to experience the effects of a style stemming from an interest in balancing décor to create harmony within space. “For me, trendy elements can be classics if you mix them with other parts that balance your décor so it is dynamic, yet harmonious,” states Tanya. “Whether modern or traditional in style, the mix of elements is what creates a timeless space.”

Train your eye, discover what you like and don’t like. Enjoy art, different types of art. Invest in good-quality hardcover books on topics of interest and use them in décor. Notice details. It’s all in the texture and other elements. Buy because you love something, not because you can or cannot afford it. Ask the questions: Do you love it? Will you love it for a long time? How does it make you feel?

HOME Holiday Glamour After moving into the new house in 2012, they worked on the project over the next few years until along came the Homes for the Holidays tour, which is a major annual fundraiser for Hospice Care Ottawa. “My Dad spent his last time in hospice care. They were so fantastic and welcoming. So when we were approached to use our house for the tour, we said of course,” said Karyn. “And the reality is the tour encouraged us to complete the house—it was that last little push to finish everything.” Flowers Talk Tivoli, which has helped decorate every year for the tour’s 16-year run, sent their team into the couple’s home to do their magic. “We decorated another house in a Christmas theme, but wanted to do something a little different for this one,” said Elizabeth Young, owner of the florist shop. “It was the perfect party house for New Year’s Eve, so we thought we’d decorate for that.”

BE PLAYFUL Have fun with the process! Karen and Victor had a metal “Iron Maiden” sculpture of a female torso that was dressed in ferns and greenery dress. The team also playfully arranged upside-down orchids on the wall and laid party hats and accessories around the house for a non-traditional look.

HOME Holiday Glamour ELIZABETH OFFERS THESE TIPS TO MAKE YOUR HOME SPARKLE THIS SEASON 1. Work with your home’s design and colour palette. 2. Try multiple small elements for your tablescapes and mantle, rather than one large statement piece. 3. Don’t be afraid to incorporate seemingly out-of-season choices. White tulips or white peonies, for example, can add a different element to a more traditional selection. 4. Add lighting and sparkle to your table tops or mantle to give an extra sophisticated look. Champagne bottles rolled in glue and glitter add another decor element. 5. For a long-lasting holiday arrangement, use a base of winter greens that can last at least a month. After Christmas, switch out the flowers with new ones for New Year’s.

F

or Ottawa Senator’s defenceman Mark Borowiecki and his wife Tara, the holiday season is a time for traditions, family and celebrations in their beloved hometown that Mark is thrilled to represent on the ice. And, this Christmas, they are looking forward to entertaining and spending time together in their recently renovated house located in rural Carp. When the couple first toured the home in 2015, they were attracted to its many windows and open interior. But, it was the exterior qualities of the 2010 build that quickly sealed the deal—its proximity to the rink and a two-acre treed lot was perfect for their three adored dogs Remi, Tikka and Axel. Last spring, plans to replace existing carpeting with wood floors turned Tara’s eye for design towards enhancing the interior. Together with Elias Greco, of Greco Construction, a renovation created contemporary living spaces where Mark and Tara could relax and entertain guests in an enjoyable and informal setting. In keeping with the couple’s quest for a clean look, light neutral shades were chosen to coat cupboards and walls. Canadian hickory flooring by Logs End, selected for its warmth, durability and natural look, was installed throughout the house and quickly proved suited to four feet and twelve active paws. Seeking to achieve a balance between modern and traditional styles, they introduced elements such as an artful chrome faucet and clover-shaped pendant lamps, in and above the kitchen island, to prevent a prized modern fixture from stealing the show. New quartz countertops and a marble backsplash of oversized subway tile add sparkle next to high-back stools in cozy, quilted grey jersey. HOLIDAY 2018 o ttawaathome.ca  25

HOME In Style

A highlight for Mark was replacing aging appliances with upgraded versions such as a Wolf gas range and hood. “I love to cook and learned so much from my mom and grandmother. My favourites are healthy dishes, like stews and roasted chicken, using meat and produce from local farms.” Décor for the newly-renovated areas was predominantly inspired by treasured pieces of inherited art and equestrian interests. Blues and taupe shades appearing in fabric and accessories throughout the open-concept kitchen and family room are pulled from horse paintings by Mark’s 95-year-old grandfather that face a pair of bucket chairs covered in distressed saddle leather. “These paintings are like family heirlooms for us,” says Mark. “My grandfather is a World War II veteran from Poland who rode horses during the war and as a boy growing up in Poland. He now shares a special bond with Tara, who is also a horseback rider and jumper.” In the regal dining room, two refurbished black-fabric lamps flank an antique bronze sculpture of horse and rider that once belonged to Tara’s grandmother. A dramatic oval chandelier festooned with translucent capiz shells adds whimsy to a ceiling framed in barn wood beams. For the holidays, Mark and Tara plan to honour the Christmas traditions of their respective heritages while cherishing 26  ottawaathome.ca HOLIDAY 2018

and creating new ones of their own. Exterior lights, wreaths and greenery are a must along with a tree decorated with meaningful ornaments. Last year, Mark collected birch and cedar from the property so that Tara could make her own festive planters. Tara’s passion for baking is another eagerly anticipated part of the season. “I love to bake and it is such a fun part of our Christmas. I make different types of cookies such as shortbread and my mother’s German Pfeffernusse cookies.” With Mark currently enjoying his fifth season with the Senators, life entails a busy schedule with lots of time on the road. So the holidays are also a chance for the couple to recharge and spend some quiet time together. Christmas Eve now includes a long off-leash dog walk with their three pets who are later rewarded with individual stockings and wrapped gifts of their own. Having plenty of family and friends in town, Mark looks forward to hosting gatherings for the special people in their lives. “Ottawa has always been our home and we love it. Where else can you find a city with so many amenities and yet such a warm small-town feel? For me, any chance we have to be together with those who have loved and supported us so much along the way, and still continue to be there, is pretty special.”

igh impact, low-stress green is one of the most versatile colour families to work with. No matter which shade you choose, emerald, sage, olive or mint, green breathes life into space. Current trends are choosing a deep, rich version of the shade. Painting a front door green is a welcome symbol and a nod to the positive energy that leads into the home. Bring it into the bathroom to create an uplifting effect in this well-used space. Combine green with white paint, tinted on the grey/beige side of white, for a complementary contrast. Avoid whites with blue tints. Choose gold accents to play up the luxurious qualities of green. Designer Tanya Collins used emeraldgreen tiles from Ceratec in the in-law suite bathroom at the CHEO Lottery dream home with striking results.

ike and Sonia Tannis gave themselves a spectacular Christmas gift this year. They recently moved into their new dream home and had it beautifully gift-wrapped for the holidays to host a festive family dinner for over 50 close-knit relatives. But the gift was not delivered by a magical Santa. Or if it was, it came in the form of Ramona Helal who performed an enchanted feat of interior design and holiday decorating on the grand Kemp Park home. She had worked closely for two years with a talented team of professionals, including Carlo Dinardo of DNC Construction, who built the home from plans drawn up by Temprano & Young Architects. Built on an empty half-acre lot, the homeowners envisioned big open living spaces with a luxurious master bedroom and ensuite on the main floor. Their wish was granted with 3,700 square feet on one level, including a room-sized pantry off the designer kitchen to store all of Sonia’s household needs.

On the wish list for the interior design was a fondness for curved archways and pillars to define rooms within an open layout. Ramona modified this idea by designing archways with built-in columns and fine architectural detailing that is highlighted in the dining area, family room and kitchen. “I think this has a more timeless effect and all the trim work is painted in off-white to give a soft, warm look.” A high level of detailing is also seen in the coffered dining room ceiling with deep 11 inch layers of curved molding, in addition to the built-in custom crafted cabinets by Irpinia Kitchens. Ramona added some personal holiday decorating touches here with a display of her own hand-made metallic tree ornaments, which involved gluing on more than 140 stems. curved archways that uniquely define each space. Whereas Ramona designed the dining room to have a classic-traditional feel, the family room is more classiccontemporary. Greige-stained maple flooring and pale designer-grey walls run throughout the main living area to provide a calm, neutral backdrop for the décor. A massive man-made stone fireplace, flanked by arched alcove shelving, is the stunning focal element of the family room. Made in Montreal, the 8 3 9 foot structure easily frames a 75” TV without letting it dominate the room. The cathedral ceiling rises to over 12 feet to meet a wall of windows and patio doors. At its centre hangs a simply elegant chandelier from Living Lighting Ottawa. The sophisticated custom kitchen by Irpinia features Vienna cabinetry in the same soft Snow Drift finish as the dining room cabinets. “Carved corbels

incorporated into the cabinets provide an extra design detail that takes it to the next level,” explains Ramona. She adds that DZN Centre supplied the patterned tin backsplash, as well as all floor finishes and tiles throughout the home. “They are my favourite one-stop shop for finishes.” To further emphasize the soft curves of the home’s archways, the 8 3 10 foot kitchen island is topped with a single slab of black-speckled granite that has a crescent-shaped seating side. Built to seat 10, the huge island is partnered with an industrial-size Dacor gas stove that is designed for feeding a big crowd. “The home is a very detailed all-custom design,” says Ramona, who happily concludes that, “Everything worked out perfectly.” Now, all the glorious giftwrapped setting needs to complete the magic of the holidays is to be filled with the Tannis family guests.

SMALL JOYS The Shoebox Project for Women collects and distributes gift-filled shoeboxes to women impacted by homelessness in communities across Canada and the US. Each shoebox is filled with items ($50 in value) that help make a woman in need feel special; a small gesture of kindness that has a positive impact on the woman who receives it. Founded in 2011 in Toronto, by four sisters-in-law Caroline, Jessica, Vanessa and Katy Mulroney, The Shoebox Project is an official charity with several local chapters all run by volunteers. In Ottawa, The Shoebox Project continues to grow due to the enthusiasm of returning donors and the support of their founding sponsor, Tamarack Homes, and other corporate and community partners. This year in Ottawa, there is a need for 2,500 shoeboxes for women at over 45 local shelters. The drive runs from November 1 to December 3 with nearly 30 drop-off locations throughout the city. LEGENDS BY TED SIMPSON   @Ted_613 PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARK HOLLERON

THEN The village of Richmond began life as a military settlement in 1818, laid out along the north bank of the Jock River. It takes its name after the Duke of Richmond, Charles Lennox, who had just been appointed Governor General of Upper Canada at the time. The duke paid his first and only visit to the town on August 26, 1819, and promptly died two days later from an infection. His body was ceremoniously transported along his namesake, Richmond Road. When the town of Richmond became a municipality in 1850, many of the early buildings were made of local stone, including the Richmond Hotel, which still stands to this day. Moving into the 1900s, buildings tended to be constructed from 38  ottawaathome.ca HOLIDAY 2018

the Duke of Richmond, and caused the deadly infection. The fox can be found in the logo for the Richmond Village Association, sitting directly above a portrait of the Duke himself.

NOW

CHRISTMAS IN RICHMOND

Today the Village of Richmond retains its old world, small-town feel. Sitting west of Manotick and south of Stittsville, the village maintains a small population of just under 5,000 people. Close enough to Ottawa for an easy commute, but far enough to avoid the hustle and bustle of city life, Richmond has become a soughtafter community for young families to live. With a bit of dark humour, the village has taken the fox as its mascot. Local legend says that it was a rabid fox that bit

Christmas season kicks off with the Village of Richmond Holiday House & Business Tour, on December 1. The charitable event supports the Richmond Food Bank and takes you on a map-guided tour of village homes and businesses decorated by local interior designers and decorators, led by Richmond local Sonya Kinkade. Tickets are $25 and more information is available on their Facebook page. The Lighting of The Park on December 8, when the village’s

Don’t let the small-town label fool you into thinking there’s not a lot going on here. Richmond offers a few stand-out experiences loved by locals and visitors alike, such as a night out at the Royals Restaurant, opened 40 years ago and still run by the Mamalis family, on Perth Street. CC’s Corner is a new favourite, just passing their fourth anniversary, that offers coffee and curiosities in a funky little shop on Lennox Street. Come for the curated selection of local baked goods and Bridgehead coffee beans; stay for the everchanging collection of antiques and oddities. The Country Quilter on McBean Street is everything you could want from a smalltown quilt shop. Set in a charming heritage house that dates back over 100 years, it has a past life as the post office, a shoemakers, a tailors and an undertakers. They offer DIY workshops on everything from quilts to purses to placemats. Richmond also has its own vineyard. Jabulani Vineyard and Winery has been operating on Jock Trail Road since 2011, and owner Tom Moul has been making wine since he was a teenager living in South Africa. Bringing together African methods with grapes grown in Ottawa’s climate has been a winning combination for Jabulani.

t 5 p.m. on September 21, one month after he was appointed as the new Fire Chief for Ottawa Fire Services, Kim Ayotte received a telephone call at his cottage on Otter Lake. Six violent tornadoes had touched down in Ottawa and Gatineau, with 265 km/hour winds, causing severe devastation to two hundred buildings and homes. With more than twenty-nine years of professional fire services experience, including fifteen years with Ottawa Fire Services, Kim utilized his training and expertise to lead and oversee his teams while on site in those areas deeply affected by the disaster.

LIVING Step Inside

Firefighters by their very nature want to help people. That is why I wanted to do it as well.” — KIM AYOTTE

The Fire Chief met with residents whose lives were forever changed as they were rescued from demolished buildings and homes that were blown away. Paramedic squads tended to the injured, police secured neighbourhoods, protected properties and only when everyone was accounted for and the area deemed safe, were residents allowed to return to retrieve medications, pets, and valuables. That day, and the ones following, highlighted how the City of Ottawa and all its departments and partners worked together as one team. 272,000 people were without power for several days, yet miraculously there were zero fatalities and only thirty injured. Kim understands that disaster can strike without warning and recommends that everyone should have a 72-hour preparedness kit to be selfsustaining for three days if a similar event happens. (Information at www.ottawa.ca). Grateful for his family’s health and wellbeing, Kim is looking forward to sharing the excitement of the festive season at the cottage with his wife Helene and their two adult children Logan (26) and Sylvie (22). He has fond memories of the French-Canadian tradition of Reveillon, where everyone attended midnight mass on Christmas Eve, followed by a huge feast of his mother’s beloved specialties. His favourite job is to find the biggest

and tallest tree to decorate outside at the cottage for a magical setting. He believes that being with his family and keeping them safe is the greatest gift of all. Why did you want to become a firefighter? Initially I wanted to be a police officer so I could work in public safety. My grandfather was a firefighter in Timmins and my father was a volunteer firefighter in Earlton and Elliot Lake. I liked firefighting, but I wanted to forge my own path and went to study law at Carleton University. When I graduated I was hired by the Ministry of the Environment as an investigator. I bought my first home in St. Catharines in a neighbourhood where I served as a volunteer firefighter captain for eight years. To me it is not just about fighting fires, but getting to really know your community. I believe it really is a community that makes who you become. What challenges come with your position? Making sure that the business runs like a business while always wanting to improve things. When we have serious incidents we need to step back and look at the larger picture, and after a postincident analysis, we find ways to improve. This allows firefighters to examine where they can do things better. You get to be a very strong and good team when you can reflect and talk about

what you have done that could have been done better and then make sure you don’t repeat that. Firefighters by their very nature want to help people. That is why I wanted to do it as well. How do you want to improve firefighters’ lives? By improving their working conditions through a wellness and fitness initiative in order to be fully prepared for the job. This also includes mental health. It is important they have the best equipment to properly protect them from contaminants that cause cancers from working in burning buildings. Work related cancer is recognized by the WSIB and the province with presumptive legislation. Unfortunately, too many firefighters die from cancer and we continue to conduct important research on how to prevent this. What is next for you? This is the pinnacle of my career and this is how I feel at this point in time. I am very excited to have attained this position and hope to leave it in a better place than I found it—although it was in great shape when I arrived. I am pleased to be part of that continued success while looking for ways to improve things and I hope to be able to help along that path. The future is the future, and we will see what it holds, but right now I am very pleased where I am. HOLIDAY 2018 o ttawaathome.ca  45

Wrapping IN Spirit

M

ost of us would agree that it’s what’s on the inside that counts. But that old adage doesn’t mean much to anyone scrambling to wrap last-minute presents during the frantic holiday season. That’s why Bernie and Deirdre Murphy are like Christmas angels to many shoppers in Ottawa. The couple, who have been married for 54 years and whose humour and affection for each other shines through with every word they speak, volunteer for The Christmas Gift Wrapping Project each December, and they’ve done so for over a decade. With locations at both Carlingwood Mall and St. Laurent, the project is run entirely by volunteers, and all proceeds go into a special fund set up by the OttawaCarleton Association for Persons with Developmental Disabilities (OCAPDD). The fund helps to purchase Christmas or birthday gifts, and pay for special activities for over 800 individuals with developmental disabilities in the National Capital Region. Over the past 20 years, the project has raised more than $300,000. Bernie and Deirdre like to volunteer together, and they have a special fondness for the wrapping project. “This is our 13th year of wrapping, and we get so much out of seeing the faces of the clients we help,” enthuses Deirdre.

SECTION Title

The couple also have a very clear division of labour. Bernie does the client interaction—taking in the presents, explaining prices and helping clients choose wrapping paper styles—while Deirdre does the wrapping. “I’m not good at wrapping,” says Bernie with a laugh. “He’s a typical male,” jokes his wife. Asked why they dedicate so much of their time to this project, Bernie’s answer is simple. “Some people have a very difficult life, and we want to give back to people in need,” he says. “We have the health, energy and time to do this,” continues Deirdre. “We’re two of the most fortunate people we know and we enjoy doing this as much as the people enjoy receiving what we wrap.” The booths, which are fully stocked with quality wrapping paper and ribbon by Carlingwood and St. Laurent, are open during regular mall hours, and there’s often a line up. “Clients are very exacting, but we give them what they want,” notes Deirdre. “It looks very professional when it’s done, and people are incredibly generous when they are paying, because they know it goes to charity.” And, in the end, it is that spirit of generosity towards others which is the very best gift of all! It’s party season! Ottawa At Home has tapped into expert resources for on-trend entertaining tips and inspiration. FOOD & DRINK Erin Clatney, founder of Dish Catering, notes that styling components get stepped up during this time of year. “People are willing to spend a bit more to ensure that the overall look and feel of the event is elevated. More than ever, décor is a huge focus today. People want creative backdrops for Instagram pictures and outdoor components, complete with fire pits and blankets, to offer a sense of laidback, cozy comfort.” Erin confirms that beverages are in the spotlight now. “Our clients are willing to splurge on specialty items, such as a dedicated spirits bar including vintage and cut-crystal glassware along with rare whiskies, brandies, bourbons or rums. These products offer more variety than just having a signature cocktail.” Tanya Whelan, director of operations at catering firm Tulips & Maple, says that the biggest difference today for holiday parties is the food. “People are interested in a lot 66  ottawaathome.ca HOLIDAY 2018

of different cuisines; they want items that reflect our Canadian cultural diversity. Instead of the classic Christmas dinner, we’re often serving things like turkey satay, vegetarian spring rolls or salted caramel carrot-cake pops.” She adds that buffets or stand-up receptions with passed canapes are now more popular than sit-down dinners. “People want to mingle and interact with each other, often in gatherings that are more intimate than in the past.” Sheila Whyte, owner of Thyme & Again Creative Catering, notes that quality take-out products now have an important role in holiday entertaining. “They are the perfect way to help round out a meal, while decreasing the pressure on the host. As the food industry continues to shift, there is an increasing selection of quality take-out products available and they offer the host a chance to enjoy time with friends and family rather than spending all their time cooking and serving.”

Everyone has their own unique approach to holiday décor, according to designer and decorator Karen Grand of Grand Expectations. “Today, many people are polishing up family heirlooms and the holidays are the perfect time to bring out your most beautiful candlesticks, crystal and chargers. You might even have some special Christmas china that belonged to your grandmother—use it!” Karen suggests setting your holiday table in a layering format that starts with the table linens and builds with contrasting napkins, flatware, dishes and glassware. “A fabulous centrepiece is a must—I like to see people incorporating fruit or other natural elements. Use different colours of foliage and berries in a centrepiece to make it extra fresh and distinctive. I also suggest tying sprigs of greenery or little wreaths to each chair to make the table even more festive and inviting.” Karen has helped create memorable holiday décor for many years as part of the design team for Homes for the Holidays, which includes several florists and designers from around the city. Supporting Hospice Care Ottawa, this year’s tour on November 16 to 18, will showcase the talent of six of Ottawa’s top florists in homes across the area. HOLIDAY 2018 o ttawaathome.ca  67

FLORALS & GREENERY Lynette Deir Mullen, owner of Stoneblossom Floral Gallery is a longtime supporter of the home tour. She likes a rustic modern look that incorporates traditional holiday décor with deep ruby tones for table-top décor. Designers at Alta Vista Flowers work with the traditions of the season to create dramatic centrepieces with natural elements that can often be found on a walk in the woods. The owner of Flowers Talk Tivoli Elizabeth Young, is decorating two tour homes this year and with her team will create eye-catching displays that often include bling. Her table-top décor brings in the trend toward gold with traditional greenery and unexpected colour. Mill Street Florist owner Jessica Barrett believes in incorporating organic elements and combine twigs, florals, berries and even vegetables into holiday centrepieces. She leans towards unexpected colour combinations like orange and blue, mixed with traditional Christmas colours. “These rich contrasting colours add interest to any piece of work” offers Jessica. At Trillium Floral Design, Diane Boyd and her daughter Mandy lean towards holiday elegance using a timeless design with a variety of white flowers and rustic components like birch bark vessels, and natural elements such as pinecones, magnolia and dogwood. Sharon Slater, a floral designer with Scrim’s Florist has joined forces with Karen Grand to decorate a tour home. She prefers to keep the décor simple and says, “Christmas to me is about memories and helping clients showcase things that are meaningful to them.” Karen also advises to pare it down. “You don’t have to use all of your family’s holiday heirlooms. Instead select a few to blend with new items that you have acquired for the perfect balance of old and new.”

INGREDIENTS 1 loaf pumpernickel bread, thinly sliced 150 gram package smoked salmon ½ cup (125 mL) crème fraiche or sour cream Fresh dill Balsamic pearls (available in Ottawa at Jacobsons Gourmet Concepts)

Smoked Salmon & Crème Fraiche Canapés BY PAULA ROY Paula’s Bites:      @paulajroy

Smoked salmon has long been a favoured item on holiday menus in Europe and North America, probably because it’s as pretty as it is delicious and it can be served as simply or as fancy as you like. For these canapés, use festive cookie cutters to create decoratively shaped pumpernickel bread bases, and be sure to add a flavourful flourish like balsamic pearls or capers on top.

METHOD 1. Cut the bread into shapes using seasonal cookie cutters and place on a serving platter. 2. Tear smoked salmon into bite-sized pieces with your fingers and place 2–3 on each bread piece. 3. Top with a small dollop of crème fraiche or sour cream and a few small sprigs of dill. 4. Place a balsamic pearl on top of each canape and serve immediately or refrigerate for up to one hour. Makes approximately 2 dozen canapés. HOLIDAY 2018 o ttawaathome.ca  75

BACK STORY

B

efore relying on the Internet to satisfy our yearnings, there was no greater collection of wishes than within the Sears Wish Book. Placed in front of you during the holiday season, it was the ultimate child’s book of wonders. I remember carefully combing through hundreds of Wish Book pages, gazing in amazement at photos of toys set up in awe-inspiring dioramas that made you covet them even more. Folding over the corners of those thin pages containing all the toys you hoped Santa would bring, it became an indispensable guide for wishful kids across the country. It also provided parents with a convenient shopping source for all family occasions, from birthdays to bonspiels. The Sears Wish Book was first published in Canada in 1952, and even though it was discontinued in the United States, Canada continued to publish the Wish Book, with Sears Canada CEO Calvin McDonald hand-delivering them to mark the 60th anniversary in 2012. With carefully-marked pages, hopeful kids would visit that wonderfully huge Sears store, racing to the toy department to see catalogue items on the shelves, eyes widening with the hope that Christmas Day would soon bring that coveted toy. But this rare and innocent excitement was lost forever when Sears closed all its stores across Canada earlier this year. In Ottawa, those memories will be further erased when our first Sears, that monolithic landmark at Carlingwood Mall, is demolished to make way for a new development. First opened in 1955, it was the 10th store to open in Canada when Sears Roebuck entered the market in 1953, and it was the third largest in Canada. The Carlingwood Sears was a perfect example of a Mid-Century Modern retail department store design—big and boxy, with columns supporting a canopy over windowed store displays. I even remember dining in its cafeteria, a classic department store diner, where you could rest your 76  ottawaathome.ca HOLIDAY 2018

weary feet and enjoy some heat-lamped fries and an egg-salad sandwich. Clad in fine sandstone blocks, the Carlingwood Sears suffered the ravages of a declining brick and mortar retail market that gave way to increased online shopping. A store that once sold everything from lingerie to chainsaws, Sears struggled to stay afloat in a competitive market with the advent of bigbox stores. Over time, families would no longer buy all their household items under the Sears roof, and with the added decline of in-store Christmas shopping taking its toll on the retail giant, its once mighty stonework began to crumble.

Christmas holiday display windows that were once covered in smudge marks from little faces pressed against the glass to stare in wonder at the model trains and teddy bears within are now boarded up. Today the 160,000 square-foot retail structure sits silently awaiting its wrecking-ball fate, as the 63-year-old building needs so many upgrades for safety and building code requirements that it is financially unfeasible to remain standing. Like the Wish Book that gave us so much excited hope in an age of innocence, the Sears building will also vanish into our past, leaving us with only the dog-eared memories of those childhood dreams.
