Sometimes it’s good to dig deep and take a soulful look at your approach to lifestyle. It might be surprising to see an unexpected cohesiveness and a greater connection to roots. I will always maintain a touch of elegance with my entertaining style. This has been passed down from my grandmother and my mother, who continues to replenish my china cabinet with old-world treasures. Colour will remain a constant in my décor; my grandmother’s living and dining room walls were the most soothing turquoise blue I have ever felt. Michaëlle Jean, this edition’s Outstanding Canadian, holds her Haitian heritage deep within her as she infuses elements of this artistic culture in many aspects of her working life. In our conversation we discovered a mutual love of connecting with colour and, while I know this woman has great accomplishments, I was particularly drawn to her passion for home. It is a sentiment that the busy world can relate to. Read more about this Canadian gem on page 69. Canadian design star Tommy Smythe shares his style with Vera Cody in our Step Inside column (page 14), and like me, speaks of his grandmother and the tremendous effect she has had on his style and career. Kimberley Seldon is a touch more pragmatic and credits her honest, open approach to life as the reason for attracting dream clients (page 47). She is rooted in both Canada and the United States, but can’t be pinned down to either country’s particular style, as her style stems from her authenticity. Designers have the good fortune of self-awareness! How else would we be able to shift gears and impose different selections from one client to another? But, make no mistake; each designer you meet brings their individual roots with them. So, when choosing a designer, do a little background checking to find one who shares your passions, ideas and tastes. It will likely result in making you feel right at home in your space. STYLE Established contemporary. Space that’s layered with pieces from different eras, with a wide array of colours and textures. INSPIRATION The clients; how they act and portray themselves, their interests and pastimes. A home is the ultimate extension of the client. TOP TREND PICKS • Painted tiles are huge. People are flocking to the brightly-coloured patterns commonly seen in Spain and Portugal. • Black is the new white! Painting out windows, doors, trim etc. all in black is stunning. • Pink is coming in strong. Pale blush pink is what we are calling Millennial Pink is going to be popping up everywhere. GO-TO COLOUR SCHEME Autumn is my go-to scheme. I love deep murky greens, browns, ochre and pale grey. This palette has the perfect amount of coolness, yet still feels warm. HIGH IMPACT SPACE The kitchen is really the room that sets the stage. If you get the kitchen right it becomes a space that is easy to change up just cycling out the curiosities.

CATHERINE PULCINE CPI INTERIORS STYLE Functional with colour. It’s important to create a comfortable and inviting environment that is easy to live in. While we all want our spaces to be beautiful, making sure it works for your family and reflects the house, is key. INSPIRATION Inspiration comes from objects in the space. A painting, an area rug, an interesting accessory, or even the smallest of loved items can provide a springboard to a whole look. TOP TREND PICKS • Wallpaper for feature walls, inspiring bathrooms and distinctive entries are great solutions. • Rustic, warm woods introduced into more formal areas. Live-edge dining tables paired with traditional seating. • White kitchens and baths with faux-marble look floors, backsplash and counters. Not just stark white, but soft whites or greys for cabinets. Kitchens are my passion, and to create an environment there that is reflective of the home is my goal.

TOP TREND PICKS • Burnished brass fixtures and hardware along with mixing metals. • Wall tiles, open shelving in the kitchen and fully tiled walls. • Black iron-framed showers, windows and doors for graphic contrast in neutral design schemes. rom a young age, designer and television personality Tommy Smythe was encouraged to be independent, creative and 100% authentic. Lessons from his great-grandfather, hockey icon Conn Smythe, taught him the importance of sportsmanlike conduct and balancing competitiveness with structure and fairness. High school posed challenges for Tommy and his difficulty with math impacted his dream of becoming an architect. Mentored by his grandmother, celebrated designer Dorothea Smythe, he thrived in an inspired and nurturing environment and changed his career goal to interior design. His apprenticeship with Toronto’s most influential interior designer, Youssef Hasbani, owner of the furniture store L’Atelier, connected him 14 ottawaathome.ca FALL 2017

with other designers who similarly gave him great advice. At 47, Tommy has been actively designing for more than 15 years and has worked closely with designer and HGTV television star Sarah Richardson to transform hundreds of homes. They have collaborated on several popular television series which are seen in more than 100 countries. He is a frequent guest on shows such as The Marilyn Denis Show, Cityline and Steven and Chris, as well as a columnist for numerous magazines and newspapers across Canada. His most recent experience is a tribute to Canada’s 150th anniversary as host of the HGTV documentary Great Canadian Homes, which included Ottawa’s Earnscliffe Manor. Tommy shares his impressions of the iconic home with Ottawa At Home.

Which aspects of a Q kitchen renovation should you splurge on?

Cabinetry is the foundation to build from. Millwork takes up approximately 70% of your kitchen space, which makes it a crucial element to the aesthetic of the room. Look for heavy weighted doors; door matched fillers and fascia along with even spacing between doors and drawers. Durability is synonymous with quality cabinetry, put this into place and then build from there. Incorporate upgrades and accessories as your budget allows making your kitchen an even more appealing workspace. I often tell my clients that I would rather see them put primary focus on the cabinets rather than counters and backsplash; you can always upgrade those later and incorporate up-to-date trends into these details. with the present, the homeowners relied on the decorating expertise of John LeBlanc of Cadieux Interiors, who has worked with the Lefebvre family for over two decades to enhance their personal style. Transposing a 4,000 square-foot home into a two-bedroom condo involved eliminating more than half of their belongings. John started with an idea story board and looked at the existing smaller-scale pieces to see what would be a good fit. He estimates that the ratio was 70/30 of new to old with some items being too memorable for them to leave behind. John explains that he draws floor plans to scale by hand and includes all furnishings, accessories, lighting and rugs. “It was a challenge to put a modern spin on some antique-inspired pieces, but we made it work,” he says, citing a fabulous repurposed cabinet and a lovely silver and gold-leaf chair that was placed in the condo foyer.

THE JEWEL BOX To create the warm, lived-in look of a more established home, John added colour and texture with dramatic flair. “I found a stunning Schumacher wallpaper in chartreuse, black, gold and white that looks hand-painted with a silk screen effect. It has a powerful wow factor and Madame Lefebvre loved it too. We put it on one wall in the entrance, matched with an amazing console and wall sconces, so it’s the first thing you see when you open the door.” This was a jumping off point for John who worked with it throughout the whole condo to set the tone for the open-concept living space. The chartreuse colour is repeated on grasscloth wallpaper behind the TV, as well as on the ceiling of the powder room which features black and white cheetah-patterned walls. Extra rolls of the grasscloth were innovatively used on the back of two entrance doors to create a panelled effect inside blackpainted lines. “It’s a lovely detail that makes such a difference to what would have been flat, ugly doors. I love conceptualizing the whole space and adding the pretty elements to a home – and this one is a real jewel box,” says John. His expert touch is highlighted in

the kitchen, where he collaborated with Dean Large from Astro Design Centre, who also designed the bathrooms. The white cabinetry has a traditional feel with bracketed, open and glass-fronted shelving, marble counters and iron legs on the island. “Instead of the expected more functional lighting over the island, I actually duplicated the stupidly expensive chandelier above the dining table,” he laughs, but adds it makes the kitchen look really special and fits well with the condo décor. “The bathrooms are really decadent – the best I’ve seen in a long time,” he says, describing the Ritz-style vanities and sconces. Also on his pretty list are the softer golds and blues in the bedrooms. “Their master bedroom is essentially the old bedroom reinvented with elegant new bedding and a settee recovered in antique silk,” notes John. The warmth of wallpaper in a landscape-toile design illustrates his belief that new condos do not have to conform to a cool and minimalist model with neutral décor. “I’m not afraid to be daring – and as I’ve known the homeowners for so long they trusted me to push the boundaries here and there, “ he says underlining the importance of understanding the clients personality. “They are just such lovely, lively and fun people and I am so fortunate to work with them to make their home a perfect complement of who they are.”

ave Wilson has country living in his roots. He was born in Richmond, Ontario, went to South Carleton High School and had a band with a group of friends playing local venues that even included a stint at the Richmond Fair. Dave’s singing career took him to London, England where he and his bandmates signed a record deal, but were eventually dropped. Not wanting to return to Canada, he headed to Nashville in Tennessee for a two-week writing holiday. He met his wife Kortney, a fellow

Canadian working on her music career in “music city” as well. The dynamic duo have had a colourful career path within the entertainment industry, and are the stars of the popular HGTV series Masters of Flip, as well as being parents to three young kids. They launched their careers in house flipping in 2006 when they made $30,000 renovating and selling a home in four weeks. They quickly discovered flipping houses was more lucrative than the

music business for them. Dave and Kortney live in the trendy neighbourhood of east Nashville and focus their work there. Dave says that living and working in their own community is one of the secrets to their success. They renovated their home from the ground up and incorporated a home office and guesthouse. While the house holds their office, it is most importantly their home and they have no plans to flip it anytime soon. Dave insists that one of the crucial elements to successful house flipping is to be connected to a good real estate agent who knows the market well. Kortney, now a realtor, is their agent. She has a pulse on the market and savvy decorating skills; Dave handles the construction side of things. He prides himself on finding the best trades in the industry to work with. High quality and deep pockets top the priority list for Dave. “Our secret is to have more money than you think you will need and to hire the best quality trades that you can find. Quality is everything. Just because you’re flipping doesn’t mean you compromise on quality,” says Dave as he reveals the secrets to their success adding that, “We always go

over budget.” Finding deals is another crucial component. Dave suggests checking out granite and stone suppliers who likely have pre-cut material that didn’t fit another job, but might work perfectly in a flip space. Getting to know local suppliers and making them aware of your project is a big help towards finding good deals on quality materials. Dave recommends doing thorough research before starting the project to have a clear understanding of the market. Understand who the target buyer is and gear the project to their lifestyle. This is the component that keeps them working in their own community. In Nashville, buyers want colourful spaces. As the decorator Kortney offers their customers the wow factor they are looking for, although Dave recognizes that Ottawa buyers don’t necessarily share this style. He recently came to Ottawa to sell his mother’s condo and went with a relatively safe colour scheme. Regardless of colour selection, the expert advises that fresh paint can go a long way with any renovation project. Now at the age of 46, with a family of his own and a wildly successful career in the US, Dave still thinks of the Ottawa area as home. He and Kortney will be in Ottawa for the Ottawa Fall Home Show September 28 to October 1. Join them to get tips on flipping houses. He is also considering returning in 2018 as his hometown, Richmond, celebrates its 200th birthday. He may even gather his band mates for a reunion, but just for fun. He is committed to the work he and Kortney do. “This is a serious business for us,” he says. “We have learned through the music business that things are fleeting so we take our work very seriously, but we also love it and plan to flip 10 – 15 houses per year.” FALL 2017 ottawaathome.ca 29

t’s no surprise that this centuryold home is being featured on the 2017 edition of the Glebe House Tour this September. The surprise awaits when you walk inside the classic house to a creative interior inspired by Asian influences. The new homeowners, Bart and Ariane Casey, lived overseas for 10 years while they worked as a corporate pilot and in human resource management respectively. “We lived in beautiful apartments in Hong Kong where space is so precious that every corner was well designed with smart storage ideas,” explains Ariane. When they came back home to Ottawa, the need for functional and well-organized spaces was

key to life with a young family that now includes two little boys, Finn and Aidan. With this in mind, the Caseys went looking for a home in the Glebe neighbourhood where they had lived before and enjoyed being a one-car family, biking and walking everywhere. Ariane notes that the bones of the older home met many of the conditions on their priority list. “It was on a corner lot which gives more light and land; it also has an attached garage which is unusual for the Glebe and I wanted space for a large master with an ensuite on the same level as the kids’ bedroom. This house ticked all those boxes, so we bought it from the original owner and made it our own.”

Inspired by the concepts of functional and smart space, the transformation began with converting the single residence into a triplex. Ariane reports that it took six months to get the needed permits and variations through the City of Ottawa to legally add two separate and self-contained apartments on either side of the home, and more than a year to gut and renovate the property. Acting as the main contractor, the couple collaborated with Jacques Hamel of Hamel Design to draw up the architectural plans. They created a contemporary, open layout with innovative ideas to incorporate two different worlds – a perfect fusion of time and place.

EASTERN INFLUENCES The first Asian influence is seen in the main hallway with floor lights that run along the high baseboards into the living area and up the stairs.

It’s a practical feature that they brought home with them. Ariane designed the large square kitchen herself, fitting it with glossy white cabinetry from IKEA and quartz countertops from Capital StoneWorks. “The granite composite sink by Blanco is the same as I had in Hong Kong – I really like having one big sink,” she says, adding that she worked hard on the layout to maximize efficiency. The pantry and fridge are right by the door from the garage for quick and easy grocery put away, while a baking station with all the supplies in one convenient place is a time saver. Ariane also flipped a wine rack to horizontal for a better fit, and added rustic wall tiles and backsplash from Olympia Tile to contrast the cool grey and white tones of the kitchen. Ariane’s creativity of using a kitchen cabinet door as a wall hanger in the entrance, as well as keeping many of the original pine doors of the home, adds to the effective blending of old with new. Upstairs, the boys have a spacious playroom, their own bathroom and share a sleeping room with a big king bed where the whole family can snuggle. But the main attraction is the master retreat which was constructed from the former servant’s quarters and features an original brick wall as the backdrop to the bed. A separate sitting room with a fireplace provides a quiet sanctuary within calming grey-

blue painted walls. In the impressive ensuite, a two-person tub sits in the same open-tiled space as a frameless shower. Her relatable approach to decorating combines elements of her Canadian and American personality traits in an engaging persona. Kimberley is a native from Los Angeles who met her future husband, a Canadian, while vacationing in Mexico. It was an initial encounter given that they lived in separate countries. Before she met her would-be-husband, she didn’t even know where Canada was. After returning to California, she was promptly offered a job working on a movie in Toronto. She calls this fate, as she went on to marry “Bob from Canada” and the couple has two children, Raleigh and Cooper. They live in Toronto, while Kimberley continues to work with clients in both Canada and the US. She started her television career in LA and transitioned to interior design when she moved to Toronto. You can catch her on the talk show Cityline as a regular décor expert sharing tips, ideas and bits of herself. Her Business of Design coaching program works with designers to honour their craft of interior design with the same respect as any other highly-regarded profession and reflects Kimberley’s earnest approach to the business. While both her children were born in Canada, where she has lived and worked for over 25 years, Kimberley has never felt the need to become a Canadian citizen. However, she explains how that changed recently. “Historically, Canada and the US have been such good friends and neighbours, I never really thought I needed my Canadian citizenship. Then, the November 8, 2016 US election changed my thinking - let’s just leave it at that!” She surprised herself with the depth of pride she now feels after becoming a Canadian citizen and says, “Suddenly, it’s a more permanent commitment. I feel national pride now in a way that was previously once removed.” Kimberley is eager to give back to Canada in an authentic way and recently travelled to Edmonton with her husband to work on a Habitat for Humanity build. It is part of the Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter Work Project Program’s contribution to Canada’s 150th celebrations, which is building 150 homes across Canada. Kimberley

marveled at the work ethic of the Carters, both in their 90s, who attended the build and challenged participants to keep up to them. The experience left Kimberley feeling humbled and proud. “It’s an amazing experience to work with your hands and know your efforts will put a roof over someone’s head,” she says. “Having a safe roof over your head is fundamental to well-being.” The new Canadian is cognizant of the subtle and not-so-subtle differences between the two countries and recalls an interview she did for a CTV talk show with an author. His book was titled, How To Cope With Back Pain, although during the interview he revealed that in the US his book was called How To Conquer Your Back Pain. Suddenly she felt more aware of each country’s general mindset and different approach to life. Kimberley also notes similarities when working with clients on both sides of the border. “Of course, you can speak in generalities, but that never works. All Americans don’t think one way, any more than all Canadians do. I’m from Los

Angeles and I can say that Angelinos are not terribly different from Torontonians in many ways,” she states, and wonders if this can be attributed to the nature of the clientele she works with. She believes that her approach attracts the type of people with whom she prefers to work, whether they live in Toronto or LA. “I think I find the right clients for me by being transparent about how I work and open about my business philosophy. I believe in total transparency and honouring my word. This attracts a type of person that’s awesome to work with.” Kimberley does acknowledge that Canadian consumers have a thoughtful approach to spending money and will make compromises to meet a designated budget. “They tend to be two-feet-onthe-ground types which I admire. I’m pragmatic, so that works for me,” says the no-nonsense designer. Musing about her dream job, she thinks that it might be to renovate 24 Sussex Drive where she can work her magic to create a home for Canada’s Prime Minister, delivered on time and budget! The breathtaking 3,700 square-foot house, custom built by CanSwede Homes and designed by O’Keefe Fiorenza Design Group, blurs the boundaries between the indoors and outdoors, with its use of clean lines, generous windows and calming connection to the outside world. With four grown children coming and going from their more traditionally designed home along the waterfront in Alymer, the homeowners were ready to make a change, but experienced some difficulty in finding a house that would accommodate family, guests and grandparents. “We had already sold our house and we were looking, but there wasn’t much on the market at that time,” explains the homeowner. “But then, on

a cold January day, we went to see this house—the light was breathtaking, even in the winter! I was no more than a few feet inside, when I realized just how special a home it could be for our family.” In fact, this is exactly the effect architectural designer Dylan O’Keefe intended to achieve with the use of unique sightlines both inside and out. Dylan and his team began by deconstructing the layout of the home and capitalizing on the length of the original property on Cowley Avenue overlooking Champlain Park. They installed floor-to-ceiling window walls along the perimeter of the main floor to allow the natural light to flow and frame the views of the backyard and the interior courtyard. “As soon as you walk into the home, you see straight through to the other end, with huge windows creating a courtyard in the centre of the home,” explains Elizabeth Young, owner of Flowers Talk Tivoli in Westboro. Along with her team of florists, Elizabeth will be donating her time and expertise to decorate two homes as part of this year’s holiday tour. Inspired by the home’s minimalist

The florist will also create a suspended installation in the dining room and accent the space with a large, natural holiday tree visible from the kitchen. Sleek, modern and bright, the kitchen is the ultimate room for family living and entertaining. The juxtaposition between the delicate marble backsplash and rose-gold faucet against the rugged, almost utilitarian-looking concrete countertops establishes a play-in-contrast of materials that normally would not be paired together. “The kitchen is truly the heart of the home,” explains Dylan, who used colour and tones to accentuate key areas, including the black cabinetry in the kitchen and the black aluminum window frames. The homeowners then layered textures and patterns across the main living space with the addition of Persian rugs, original art and David Trubridge pendants from Arevco Lighting. Upstairs, Dylan continued with

HISTORY

The village of Stittsville was first settled in the early 1800s, primarily by Irish immigrants, and became a functioning settlement by around 1850. The town takes its name from founding father Jackson Stitt, also of Irish heritage, who served as the area’s Postmaster. The population at the time was about 100 people. The original village was wiped out by a huge fire in 1870 that burned from Ottawa to Carleton Place, to as far as Smiths Falls. But new life came into the area a few years later when the Canadian Pacific Railway opened up from Ottawa to Carleton Place a major logging town at the time. That rail line was pulled up in 1989, and is today used as a section of the Trans Canada Trail.

Stittsville was officially incorporated as a village in 1961, and grew steadily on its own until being amalgamated into the City of Ottawa in 2001. The population has grown from around 500 people in the early 60s to nearly 30,000 residents today.

LIFE IN STITTSVILLE Stittsville today presents an interesting dichotomy between the urban and the rural ways of life. At one end, a recently developed Hazeldean Road is dense with every modern retail amenity, and the other end has direct proximity to the great outdoors, with sweeping forests and quiet pathways. This is a neighbourhood where snowmobiles are a common sight in the winter, while you can still take OC Transpo straight from there to the Rideau Centre. Glen Gower, an area resident who runs the news and community info website, Stitsville Central, says he has seen this duality strengthen as time goes on, “This is a rapidly changing neighbourhood. It’s really become an intersection of old and new.”

BUSINESS

Old and new meet on Stittsville’s traditional main street, which wouldn’t look out of place if it were found deep in the Ottawa Valley. However, the old buildings are housing a new generation of businesses. Jennifer McGahan, a Stittsville resident of 16 years, personifies this trend. Her new interior design studio is housed in a red brick home on Main Street that dates back over 100 years. The newly-renovated studio takes on a modern look, yet preserves elements of the original building in the solid wood moldings, floors and staircase. “Main Street is undergoing a revitalization,” says Jennifer. “It has been a little dilapidated and behind the times in comparison to the community that surrounds it – the people who live here are not reflected in the main street as much right now, but it’s starting to improve.”

FOOD AND DRINK Quitters Coffee is a name that will eventually come up in many conversations

about Stittsville. Yes, it’s owned by musician Kathleen Edwards and she’s kind of a big deal, but there is more to it than that. Quitters has become a destination reason to make the trip into Stittsville, especially for those trekking by bike, as the shop has become a common goal for long-distance cyclists. Saturday night trivia at Quitters is wildly popular with locals and musical performances here are regularly packed. Beyond just being a cool coffee shop owned by a rock star, it’s just a great place to spend time with people. Stittsville’s newfound prominence on the culinary scene got off to a rocky start. The owners of the Wellington Gastropub intended to bring a similar high-end dining experience to an historic building on Main Street, but it caught fire while under construction in 2013 and the building was destroyed.Meanwhile, the restaurant NeXT has been a huge success on Hazeldean Road and is regarded as one of the best restaurants in the Ottawa area. LIVING This neighbourhood stands out as a place that people come to start families. Your dollar buys a bigger house and a bigger backyard than most other places inside the city limits. Thanks to a community development plan that limits new construction to four stories, the area has remained mostly low-rise, dominated by single family and semi-detached homes Deborah Denison from Tamarack Homes, notes that the market for semidetached and townhouses has been especially hot recently, with intensification happening in Stittsville’s north end. Pool Creek, a joint project by Tamarack and Tartan Homes, located just west of Huntmar Drive and south of the Queensway, will have 450 new homes when completed. FALL 2017 ottawaathome.ca 67

Michaëlle Jean arrived in Canada in 1968 as a refugee from Haiti. She came with her parents and sister, but when her parents’ marriage broke up she moved to a basement apartment in Montreal with her mother Luce and sister Nadege. The early years in Canada were challenging for Michaëlle, but her tenacity and strength led to academic success and ultimately superb career achievements as a journalist, broadcaster, and notably as Canada’s 27th Governor General and Chancellor of the University of Ottawa. Today she serves as the third SecretaryGeneral of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, where she is the spokesperson and official international representative for the political actions of the Francophonie, and the first woman to hold this position. She is currently living in Paris with her husband, film maker Jean-Daniel

Lafond and daughter Marie-Eden Lafond, yet still maintains a home in Ottawa. While her diverse career has stirred controversies surrounding numerous topics including her status as a Canadian, she upholds a dignified air of compassion that embodies the strength of her spirit. To spend time with this vibrant woman is an enriching human experience. Michaëlle has great pride in her Haitian roots and rich cultural heritage. She combines a passion for the arts with her philanthropic endeavors, which she also applies to her personal lifestyle. After finishing her time as Governor General of Canada, she started the Michaëlle Jean Foundation as her legacy. The organization’s mission statement declares, “The Michaëlle Jean Foundation supports youth arts initiatives that transform young lives and revitalize

In a conversation over lunch at the Fairmont Château Laurier, the gracious woman discusses her passion for youth and the arts. Her eyes light up as she speaks of the artistic expression of graffiti and “urban poetry.” She refers to these youthful expressions with deep respect and understanding, urging people to take time to read and analyze these often undervalued and unappreciated works. “Look at urban poetry and what youth are saying. It’s rich when young people use the power of words,” she advises and warns that, “Violence comes when there are no words.” Offering troubled youth the opportunity to have a voice and a place to express is an essential part of the work she does with her foundation. She describes the work of the foundation as offering a sense of belonging and in turn, a sense of self-worth. Her passionate approach to living is palpable. Each thoughtful word she speaks exudes with insightful wisdom, whether it describes her decorating style – she declares everything in her home is a conversation piece – or her commitment to her foundation. “The work we do offers a sense of belonging and self-worth,” she says as her famous eyes light up with a vehement spark. Expressing concern about the pace she witnesses in the world today, Michaëlle states, “We are in a world where everything goes so fast – we are running after time – there is a sense of urgency.” She advises slowing down to make more time and sharing what you have, which is her theory on the meaning of life. Living a life of collecting stories and sharing experiences, she believes that “When you are in a country like Canada, there are so many stories to share – it’s an amazing story of the human experience.” As a person who possesses great compassion and the ability to understand and express the needs of others with eloquence, Michaëlle is clearly meeting her standards of living a meaningful life in both her professional and personal life. brahim Musa knows what it’s like to feel different from his peers. Now 18, he arrived in Canada as a refugee from Iraq with his parents in 2002. “I grew up low-income – my parents earned minimum wage despite their university degrees, which weren’t recognized here,” he explains. “They had to work and go back to school to get new degrees to support their kids.” Ibrahim’s parents worked hard, as did

he, but that didn’t stop him from being affected by self-esteem issues. “I knew I was different. My hair was different, my clothes were different – sometimes I was embarrassed to bring friends home to my house because I knew my home was not the same as theirs.” But it was those tough times that spurred Ibrahim to action. Last year he founded a charitable organization called Cuts for Kids Foundation, which provides free haircuts for low-income Ottawa kids. “Many of us see a haircut as a basic amenity,” Ibrahim notes, but he knows all too well that it’s not as simple as that for all residents of Ottawa. “If you’re going to a job interview, or starting back to school, a haircut offers a fresh start, some selfesteem. It goes way past hygiene to the mental health of our youth.” Ibrahim made sure that Cuts for Kids is open to any low-income person between the ages of 3-17 whether they are homeless, have lived here their entire lives, are members of indigenous or diverse communities, or are newcomers to the city.

Ibrahim is supported in his work by numerous barbers and hairstylists who volunteer their time, particularly Ottawa’s Hairfellas Barbershop. He is also a Tenant Ambassador for Ottawa Community Housing (OCH), a relationship which has proved invaluable when organizing the events Cuts for Kids holds across the city throughout the year. “Every month we hold one or two events at a local community centre or club,” says Ibrahim. The events are 3-5 hours in length and there are often booths set up to provide information on other services available to local families, such as employment, health, sports or food support. “It’s about dignity – packaging something so that you are giving people their dignity,” concludes Ibrahim about Cuts for Kids, a remarkable organization created by a young man whose compassion and dedication to Ottawa is clearly a cut above. Start with yummy bread and then a creamy base. Top with steamed spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, figs, roasted peppers, green onions or minced olives – the possibilities are endless. he Ottawa restaurant community is a tight-knit group. So it’s no surprise that Noah Firestone, owner of LUXE Bistro in the ByWard Market, could quickly mobilize his staff and fellow restaurateurs when he learned earlier this year that his infant son Zev had been diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome (AS). AS is a rare, complex genetic disorder that primarily affects the nervous system and can cause delayed development, intellectual disability, severe speech impairment, and problems with movement and balance. You sprang into action very quickly – what motivated you? I dove headfirst into research and some of the best resources came from online forums with other parents. I learned that the outcomes can vary greatly from what we’d initially been told to expect; parents shared stories of kids running and being able to communicate though iPads and picture boards. As a “get things done” person who likes to set and achieve goals, I wanted to leverage the aggressiveness that has helped me succeed in business to try to help and protect my family. FAST really impressed me and I knew I had a community here in Ottawa that I could mobilize to help this amazing organization reach its goal of a cure and human clinical trials.

How does your fundraising campaign work? At LUXE, ten cents from every single item people order is being donated to FAST. Some of our neighbouring food service businesses and suppliers have generously made donations. We’ve implemented got a 50/50 draw every pay period for our employees. We are also putting blue forks on our tables and encouraging people to raise awareness by taking selfies with them and posting the images on social media with two hashtags: #stickaforkinit and #cureangelman. We’re also planning a big fundraising gala at LUXE next March.

What has this experience taught you so far? I’d never heard of Angelman

Syndrome and although I have learned a lot about how terrible it is in terms of how it can affect people, I’m really encouraged by the fact that it’s also a relatively straightforward, monogenetic (single gene) disorder, which makes it an excellent and viable candidate for developing a cure. That inspires me every day; it’s very exciting to be a part of pushing this cure across the finish line. As my wife and I like to say, it’s so close we can taste it. I love thinking about the fact that our efforts will help not just Zev, but many other families too.

chef in the country at the prestigious Gold Medal Plates culinary competition, Chef Joe Thottungal decided that after thirteen years it was time to refresh the décor at his popular Coconut Lagoon at 853 St. Laurent Boulevard. The mid-century building now offers a modern, neutral decor which serves as a pleasing, understated backdrop to Coconut Lagoon’s delicious and colourful Indian cuisine. Hand-carved woodwork, evocative of Joe’s home state of Kerala, enlivens the space with pretty pops of texture throughout the room.

OZ KAFE The sister and brother team of Ozlem and Ozden Balpinar have reopened Oz Kafe after completely renovating an NCCowned building in the ByWard Market’s historic Clarendon Court at 10 York Street. It is a rustic, warm space decked out in stone, copper and wood with exposed beams and eye-catching bars on both

levels. A unique, cage-like staircase does double duty as a wine storage area. New Chef Kristine Harting is putting her own spin – with lots of fresh flavours and European-inspired flair – on the menu, which will change regularly.

A former family home at 61 rue Principale in Aylmer, built in the mid-1800s, has found new life as an upscale restaurant that plays up the building’s heritage, complementing the rough-hewn stone walls with modern flourishes. La Maison Conroy opened late last year after adding elegant chandeliers, banquettes and rich textures and colours to accent the dark wood floors. A stunning bar and open-prep kitchen for raw foods and charcuterie add atmosphere while Chef Kyle Mortimer-Proulx’s inventive, playful menu is a delight for all the senses.

& sweet potato salad

3 tbsp (45 mL) freshly squeezed lime juice (about 2 medium limes) 1/2 tps (2.5 mL) kosher salt, or to taste 1/2 tsp (2.5 mL) freshly ground black pepper Garnish: 1/2 cup (125 mL) pepitas (green pumpkin seeds) 1/2 cup (125 mL) fresh coriander leaves, chopped

METHOD Preheat oven to 400F.

Put sweet potato, onion and chickpeas on one large, rimmed, parchment-lined baking sheet (or divide among two smaller sheets).

Vegetarian, vegan and omnivore approved! Chickpeas add protein and the sweet potatoes are both hearty and delicious. Serves 4 - double or triple the recipe to feed a crowd. INGREDIENTS Salad: 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 3/4 inch pieces 1 large cooking onion, cut into 1/2 inch pieces 540 mL can chickpeas, drained and rinsed 2 tbsp (30 mL) olive oil 1 tsp (5 mL) garlic powder

1 tsp (5 mL) smoked paprika 1/2 tsp (2.5 mL) coarse kosher salt Dressing: 1 1/2 tsp (7.5 mL) coriander seeds (or 1/2 teaspoon/2.5 mL ground cumin) 1 clove garlic, finely minced 1/3 cup (90 mL) vegetable oil, divided 1 tbsp (15 mL) honey (or more to taste) 1/2 tsp (2.5 mL) Dijon mustard

Drizzle with olive oil, then use your hands to toss the mixture so everything gets coated evenly. Sprinkle the garlic powder, smoked paprika and salt over top. Place in preheated oven and roast for about 25 - 30 min, stirring once half way through, until potatoes are tender but not mushy, and the onions are starting to caramelize. While vegetables roast, make the dressing. Lightly toast the coriander seeds in a dry skillet until they smell fragrant, then lightly crush or bruise the toasted seeds with a mortar and pestle or the bottom of a sturdy mug or cup. Set aside. In a glass jar with a tight lid, place the minced garlic and 2 tablespoons of the vegetable oil. Heat in microwave on medium-high power for 45 seconds. This will par-cook the garlic and infuse the oil. Add the toasted coriander seeds, honey, Dijon, lime juice, salt and pepper to the garlic and oil mixture. Cover tightly and shake to blend well. Add remaining oil to the jar and shake again. Taste and adjust honey, salt, pepper or lime juice to suit your tastes. When vegetables are cooked, remove from oven and transfer to a large bowl. Immediately drizzle half the dressing over top and toss very gently to combine. Add more dressing as needed so the vegetables are thoroughly coated but not drowning in dressing. Let sit at room temperature up to two hours before serving, or refrigerate for longer storage (up to 4 days.) Serve garnished with pepitas and cilantro. FALL 2017 ottawaathome.ca 87

woman by the name of Anne Crosby, the daughter of the family who ran the hotel. They were soon married and honeymooned in the Northeastern estled on the west bank of the United States. Yet Anne never seemed to leave the mill. Her spirit was said to remain on the site along with blood stains and fingernail marks on the post where her body struck. Current visitors are said to feel cold air and goosebumps on the second floor where she perished. Joseph soon built another stately stone building in Ottawa called “Gorffwysfa,” a Welsh word for place of rest. It’s a home he built as a gift to his third wife, Hannah, granddaughter of Philemon Wright. This stone house is now better known as 24 Sussex Drive, and was purchased by the Government of Canada in 1943 to become the official residence of Canada’s prime ministers. Joseph Currier died in 1884 and finally came to rest next to his beloved Anne at Beechwood Cemetery where the two still continue to haunt Ottawa’s special stone buildings in their own respective ways.
