ISSUE 2009 FALL
The Scrivens
Long-term care insurance is important for everyone
by Peter Scrivens, President
N
Perspective
A
year ago, in the fall 2008 newsletter, we featured an article on the critically important topic of long-term care insurance. We’ve decided to re-visit the subject in this newsletter for a couple of reasons. The first is to try to dispel the persistent and erroneous belief by young Canadians that they simply don’t need such coverage, that it’s something they can deal with when they get older. The second is to dispel a similar belief by wealthier Canadians that they don’t need coverage because they have ample resources. As you’ll see in our lead article, neither of those beliefs is correct. We’re happy to report that many of you are getting information about issues like long-term care insurance through our fun and informative “lunch and learn” sessions. Be sure to check the back page for the next two sessions on the schedule. This edition also marks the return of one of your favourite newsletter features, the Scrivens Retrospective. Finally, we present our second client profile in what will be an ongoing series over the next few editions. We share a lot of values with the folks at Frisby Tire, and we’re thrilled that they’ve been both friends and clients for generations.
ot so many years ago, long-term care was viewed as something you could address when you got older. And if you were lucky enough to have some money squirreled away, you might never have to worry about it at all. Fortunately, times have changed. Today, Canadians of all ages and income levels are beginning to realize that making long-term care decisions now is the only way they can adequately secure their future. “That’s a welcome change,” says David Scrivens. “It used to be that people wouldn’t buy insurance when they were healthy, often waiting until it was too late. Now, we’re seeing people in their 40s buying long-term care insurance because they’ve seen what’s happened to their parents, their older relatives and friends.” “The insurance industry has responded,” says David, “reducing the age for long-term insurance coverage to as low as 21. Young people don’t plan to get sick, they don’t plan to have accidents, but the fact is, they do.”

savings quickly. Then there are waiting lists and a lack of choice when it comes to facilities. Long-term care insurance provides an income benefit that you can use as you wish should you be unable to care for yourself due to illness or deteriorated mental or physical abilities, whether due to aging or an accident. “It gives you the freedom to choose the kind of care you want,” says David. “With that comes the peace of mind of knowing that you won’t be passing along that financial burden to your loved ones. Also, if you need facility care or home care, having this coverage allows you more options.”

Employee fraud hurts company and employees

E:GHDC6A insurance Give your sump pump the support it requires
T
he most common—and damaging—insurance claims involve sewer backup and water damage. There are a number of reasons. For example, many neighbourhoods have aging sewers and drainage systems. When homeowners in these areas finish their basements, the potential for problems increases. In response, insurance companies have been forced to tighten the requirements for coverage. By taking a few simple steps, you can increase your level of protection while decreasing the likelihood of having to file a claim. You may wish to install a back-flow valve onto the exterior waste pipe, which acts as a flapper mechanism. If you have a sump pump, make
Why Your World Is About to Get a Whole Lot Smaller, by Jeff Rubin
T
he rising price of oil is going to radically change your life, so get used to it, says controversial economist Jeff Rubin. But Why Your World Is About to Get a Whole Lot Smaller isn’t all gloom and doom. Sure, international travel and long car trips may become luxuries, but the demise of car-clogged roads will make us all healthier. This is a fascinating look at our future by an internationally recognized energy expert. Read a good book lately? Let us know and we’ll tell others about it in Worth Reading.
sure it is well maintained and serviced. An alternate power supply to ensure the pump continues to operate during a power outage is a wise investment. You should also review your Homeowners & Tenants policy for changes or new limits for water damage coverage. All qualifying Scrivens policyholders carry this coverage, and while we’re proud to say we’ve had no claims denied for this type of damage, this may not always be the case. Let us know if you have installed a back-flow valve or alternate power supply. And don’t be surprised if your insurance company asks that you have these installed.
When investing your money, be prepared to ask questions
W
hen investors read about the Bernie Madoff case in the U.S. or the Earl Jones case in Canada, they naturally want to be reassured that their investments are fully protected. Many want to know what additional steps they can or should take to safeguard their financial future. The answer is two words: ASK QUESTIONS! Let’s begin with the basics. Anyone selling mutual funds must be properly registered by their provincial securities commission. Furthermore, the representative’s dealer firm (in our case, FundEX Investments Inc.) must be supervised through either the Mutual Fund Dealers Association of Canada (MFDA) or the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada. FundEX is supervised through the MFDA. Life insurance agents must be licensed through the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO). You can check with the securities commissions, MFDA or FSCO to make sure your advisor or firm is registered. At Scrivens Financial Services, we have the proper registrations and certifications both on a corporate and individual level. For more information, I suggest you read the brochure “Protect your money: Avoiding frauds and scams.” You can access it at the Ontario Securities Commission website at www.osc.gov.on.ca. For more information, contact your Scrivens representative at 613-236-9101.
For more information, call Jennifer Falconer at 613-236-9101.

Nancy Moulson celebrates her 10th anniversary with us on November 18, 2009. Now an account manager in our Personal Lines Insurance division, Nancy joined our office as a data entry clerk. She is a licensed insurance broker RIBO and is now working on her Customer Service Insurance Professional designation. We’re proud to salute Debbie Blais (second row, far right), wife of employee Stephen Blais, who raised $11,000 at the fourth Annual Weekend to End Breast Cancer.
“Lunch and learn” dates set: On October 21, Wendy Black from Sun Life will be at Scrivens to speak about long-term care insurance. On November 18, Patrick McGarry from Hulse, Playfair & McGarry Funeral Homes will speak about funeral planning. Both will be here from noon to 1 p.m.
Flu shots more important than ever this year
Unlike previous years, many Canadians are likely to require two flu shots this fall—one for seasonal flu and a second for H1N1 or “swine flu.” As always, Ottawa residents can get flu shots from their doctor or at one of the roughly 450 immunization clinics spread throughout the region. Please read the simplified prospectus before investing. Mutual funds are not guaranteed and are not covered by the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation or by any other government deposit insurer. Branding your products the Canadian way PASS P ORT FOR THE FOOD AND AGRICULTURE SECTOR
Passport to the world This little book is your guide to making the most of the Canada brand in international markets. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada collaborated with Canada’s food and agriculture sector to conduct research in global markets and build a brand that capitalizes on our strengths. What did we learn? People trust Canadians and the goodness of our products. They love our clean, natural environment. They see Canada and they think quality and excellence. The Canada brand embraces the attributes at the core of our reputation:
› Commitment › Excellence and quality › Customer focus
› Nature › Trustworthiness
This book will help you to maximize all that Canada represents as you brand your product abroad. Consider it your passport to success.
1
Use this Canada brand passport to: › Strengthen your own brand, by building on the maple leaf and all it stands for.
› Make sure your brand comes through in your products, your people, your promotions.
› Position your brand in international markets.
The Canada brand: › Builds on Canada’s positive image in the world › Can set you apart from the competition. › Implies a promise customers expect you to deliver!

Eeyou Istchee was an experience
Flying north on Air Creebec to Chibougamau with Paul Wertman from the Grand Council of the Crees made the transition from southern to northern Quebec a welcome exchange. Paul was instrumental in setting up the award-winning community known as Oujé-Bougoumou. We happened upon each other at the Montreal gate prior to boarding the plane. The hour flight north over boreal forest into Cree lands was the start of an eight-day tour traveling to different locations where elders and notable leaders live. These people all played an important role in shaping the Cree Nation into what it is today.
The James Bay and Northern Quebec Cree have been gordongroup clients for 20 years. I have travelled to the territories in the past and have great memories of being there with my father, who accompanied me on fishing trips to Lac Mistissini with George Blacksmith. I’m here this time as a result of being sponsored by the Grand Council of the Cree to capture history. The Grand Council have engaged us to document (in broadcast quality footage) historical records of each Cree leader’s perspective. We will capture their memories of the time in 1975 when the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement was signed. G.C.C.E.I.
