DIRECTOR’S NOTE I could not be more chuffed to welcome each and every one of you to Otterbein’s production of Something Rotten! This piece combines so many of the things I truly love in the theatre: the genius and appreciation of Shakespeare, broad comedy played hand-in-hand with rapier wit, a flawlessly smart and clever book, amazing lyrics, incredible music, and the unapologetic theatricality of the American Musical. Something Rotten is quite literally a love letter to all of these things. If you are a fan of the Bard, you could come to every one of our performances (which I highly encourage) and still not find all of the nods to Hamlet and Shakespeare’s other works. If you adore musicals, you could come to every performance (did I mention I encourage this?) and still not spot all of the references to great and notable musicals. Finally, Something Rotten is a musical ode (do you like the word? Shakespeare invented it!) praising the indelible and transformative power of words. It’s also a helluvalotta FUN! If you enjoy the show, the credit is due to every person whose name appears in your program. If anything disagrees with you, please know those mistakes are entirely mine. We cannot thank you enough for choosing to spend your time with us tonight. From all of us, Thanks. - Mark Mineart THE GLOBE PLAYHOUSE (161'1·-164-'t)

* The authorship of Shakespeare’s plays was never called into question until over 150 years after his death. This was done by a young American woman named Delia Bacon who became fixated on the idea that her namesake Francis Bacon (though she was no relation) was the true author of Shakespeare’s works. She went so far as to travel to England to pursue this idea. However, rather than engage in scholarly research, she would go to various sites where Bacon spent time and, in her own words, “absorb atmospheres.” Delia died in an insane asylum in 1859 under the belief that she was The Holy Ghost. Edward de Vere, the Earl of Oxford is often put forth as the author of Shakespeare’s works. The most glaring deficiency in this theory is that de Vere died in 1609, well before many of Shakespeares plays had been, or could have been, written, given that some of them (Macbeth and the Tempest, to name two) were based upon historical events that had not yet occurred. A third contestant put forward as the true author of Shakespeare’s plays was Christopher Marlowe, who, while certainly a legitimate and capable talent, would not have been quite up to the task of penning the plays given that he was stabbed though the eye and died in a bar fight in 1593, at which time, alas, only seven of Shakespeare’s thirty-eight plays had been written. So, yes, Shakespeare wrote Shakespeare’s plays.
