The return of the Otterbein Singers was an absolute triumph! The concert, which took place on March 20th, 2022, was titled "Myths, Legends, and Tales". It featured music from a variety of musicals, including Camelot, Once Upon a Mattress, Into the Woods, Hadestown , The Lightning Thief, and Spamalot. This was the first Friends benefit concert that these particular students had ever done - the current Juniors, the eldest students in the group, were Freshman in the spring of 2020, when the concert was cancelled abruptly due to COVID-19. It was wonderful to work with them again. The concert was directed by Jeremy Alfera and Michael Lester, as Dennis Davenport, the usual director, was away on sabbatical. After the performance, the Friends hosted a reception for the Singers and the concert attendees, with refreshments flying off the tables!
The benefit was a success for the Friends as well, with donations totaling $1,682. The money will go towards the Friends work in supporting the library services, resources, and programs. If you attended and/or donated, thank you!
On April 5th, the Courtright Memorial Library hosted the first of several 50th anniversary events, a casual birthday party. The party began with speeches by Lois Szudy, former library director and current Friends council member; Tiffany Lipstreu, current library director and current Friends Treasurer; and Wendy Sherman Heckler, Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs. They reflected on the past, present, and future of the library. After the speeches, a ribbon-cutting was held for the new 24/7 contactless pick-up library lockers, which were funded through a federal Institute of Museum and Library Services LSTA ARPA grant awarded by the State Library of Ohio. After the ribbon-cutting, a choral performance by Opus One occurred, during which people mingled and enjoyed their refreshments. It was a fun and meaningful afternoon, and we look forward to celebrating the 50th anniversary throughout the rest of the year with our Friends!
The same day as the Courtright Birthday Party, the Friends had a short business meeting to review and pass proposed new by-laws to allow virtual meetings. The by-laws were passed unanimously. You can view the by-laws on the Friends website, otterbein.libguides.com/friends
The annual bookmark contest for the Friends of the Library occurred in the fall of 2021, with 14 students participating and 37 total entries. The Friends Council and the Courtright Memorial Library staff reviewed the entries and placed their vote for their top three favorites, and ultimately this bookmark by Rachel Kulha '25 was the winner!
Rachel's bookmark depicts a scene on each floor of the library, highlighting popular spots for students to hang out or get work done. From the top, we start with the third floor quiet study area. Moving down, we have one of the booths on the second floor, which is some of our most popular seating. Below that is the Otterbean, the place to get snacks and coffee, always important for those long study sessions! The final image shows Sarah's Corner in the lower level, the juvenile and young adult collection, which has comfortable gliding rockers and tables for group work.
Congratulations to Rachel for a fantastic bookmark! These will go out to Friends who renew their membership or new Friends starting in July 2022.
The 2022 Common Book was announced at the end of the school year. This year the Common Book will be "What the Eyes Don't See: A Story of Crisis, Resistance, and Hope in An American City" by Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha. "What the Eyes Don't See" is about the Flint water crisis, and how Dr. Mona broke the news to the nation. More information about the Friends event will be shared out via postcard and email later in the year.
We are sad to announce the passing of Sylvia Vance, a founding member of the Friends of Otterbein University's Courtright Memorial Library. Sylvia attended Otterbein, where her family had deep ties. When her children were older, Sylvia began a full-time teaching career at Otterbein. During her tenure at Otterbein, she helped create text for language teaching films, earned her MA and PhD (1980) in French Literature from OSU, chaired the Integrative Studies Department from 1981 to 1987, and served as the first Director of Humanities Programs, implementing activities funded through the National Endowment for the Humanities challenge grant, which she helped secure in 1984. Sylvia's service to Otterbein was immense, as she also was a member of the Sigma Alpha Tau sorority (as an undergraduate and, later, advisor) and the Quiz and Quill literary organization. And, of course, she was a lifelong Friend.
Sylvia passed away on January 29th, and will be sorely missed. (Text borrowed and adapted from Sylvia's obituary.)
Another lifelong Friend of the Library, Petie Dodrill, passed away on August 26th, 2021. Petie was heavily involved with Otterbein, particularly in the Theatre Department. She introduced Children's Theatre to the Otterbein community in 1962, directing 26 shows and designing costumes for more than 100 shows. She was an integral part of the theatre program from 1958-1993, along with her husband, Charles Dodrill. She attended Senior College classes and was a member of the Lifelong Learning Community. Petie joined the Friends in 2000 and was very active in all the Friends activities. We will miss her. (Text borrowed and adapted from Petie's obituary.)

There have been several staffing changes in the library as of late. We said farewell to Shiva Shakeri, one of our temporary librarians, and Kristin Cole, Assessment and Special Projects librarian. But we have welcomed Casey Mazzoli, our first Resident Librarian! The Courtright Memorial Library has developed an Early Career Development Resident Librarian position in order to give people with an MLIS who are not yet working as librarians a chance to develop experience and grow their resume within an academic environment. It is a three-year residency, and we look forward to working with Casey. Welcome!
