DESIGNER NOTES

SCENIC DESIGN by Rob Johnson:

It was the summer of 2004 when I first designed the scenery for this time-honored musical comedy. It was for the Otterbein Summer Theatre company back then as well, but with a different director (David Caldwell), and in a different space (the basement of the Campus Center). The concept for the show’s set back then was entirely different from this production, with lots of metal trusswork, rented stage components, and a kind of “touring rock show” feel. It’s always a fun opportunity to design a show a second or even third time, because you are likely to work in a different space, or with a different director, or both. A different space will often dictate changes in the design, and the ideas that a different director brings to a production inspire a designer to do something visually different as well.

For this production of Forever Plaid, I was honored to work with the great director, Lenny Leibowitz, and the “proscenium space” which we have in Cowan Hall. Lenny gave me some wonderful and inspirational words to work from; words like “celestial” and “dream-like” and yet he also wanted the physical records of the 50’s and 60’s worked into the design. I thought of the wall paneling in the rec-room of my childhood where I would go to play all of my records. I also thought of the recording studios where you would always see the records on the wall. If you are looking up at the set before you, it’s perhaps obvious how everything came together into the final design look for this production. The color pallet is based on a sky blue that feels hopeful and full of possibilities. That sky blue is also what transitions us from our earthly “rec-room full of records” into the clouds and on into the celestial universe, where our play’s four singers usually reside. Thankfully, Heaven has released them to perform for you one last time...Enjoy!

COSTUME DESIGN by Rebecca White:

Oh, what a splendid time for fashion! I just love how the swankest musical groups of the 1950’s like the Four Seasons, The Coasters, and the Flamingos would don matching clothes to signify their unified sound. Our Plaids are no exception! With simple white jackets and iconic plaids, our Plaids are dressed to impress. We chose a blue plaid to align with the celestial theme of our “boys from beyond.” I hope the costumes transport to another, more simpler time.
