Ravarac written by Sting; l^TangoduMoulin Rouge, music by Marianito Mores, lyrics by Baz Luhman and Craig Armstrong. The htstory of Tango dates back to the mid-eighteen hundreds in the barrios of Buenos Aires udth its predecessor, the Milonga. Men practiced udth men to get good enough to impress the women, who often were prostitutes. Gauchos (cowbojs) and local thieves clashed and often killed each other. Initially, the Tango was not accepted by the upper class. When brought to Paris, it received the same response, and was put into the same category as the Can Can. Finally, it was viewed by the Pope in Italy, who declared that it was not lewd, just boring. It was that statement that allowed the Tango to become a worldwide cra:^ in the 1920’s. The period between the 1930’s and 1950’s was known as 'The Golden Age of Tango. ” Today the tango song. Mi Buenos AiresQuerido, serves as Argentina’s national anthem.

Director’s Note_______________ As I thought about an appropriate “Director’s Note” for this program and production, I realized that it was necessary to mention the “state of things” as they are at this very moment. “Our world has changed forever.” This quote has been repeated time and time again since September 11,2001 and without doubt, our world has changed. But the world has always been in a constant state of change. Some horrific and some outstanding, beautiful turns of events have affected the world as we know it now. In the midst of all of this chaotic motion, there has been a constant: human emotion and expression reflected through the arts. Before we could speak to each other, we danced, pounded a drum, cut and drew images in stone, and found common sentiments, needs and responses. The motion of the dancer began to affect the line of the artist and rhythms of music grew louder. Eventually, someone decided to build a structure and dedicate it to these human expressions and responses. They could be preserved, admired, and revisited; and society could look at itself reflected in the artist’s eyes. Galleria de Danse is our structure, lovingly de signed and constructed by many choreographers, designers, Otterbein students and by the in credible collaboration with the Otterbein Art Department and Mr. Nicholas Hill. As the world moves around you, lose yourself in this living gallery. Find the beauty, passion, humor, and even conflict, that makes us connected and defines our humanity. Goodwill and peace to all of you. Stella Hiatt Kane
