CALLIOPE The calliope (pronounced kuh-lie-uh-pe) played before, after, and between acts of the play is an exact half-scale model of a circus calliope used in parades around the turn of the century. Guided only by pictures, former Otterbein Business Manager, Sanders A. Frye, fashioned this unique instrument entirely by hand. It accurately mirrors the appearance and sounds of an exciting, longgone era. At the keyboard of the ‘‘steam pie-anny” is “Perfesser” Jim Grissinger who recently celebrated the completion of 25 years as a real professor of Speech and Theatre at Otterbein. Dr. Grissinger, a percussion hobbyist, recently was a guest soloist on the Delta Queen’s calliope. Our thanks to both for their contributions to the production of The Matchmaker.
GRESSMAN GREEN ROOM Thanks to Phyllis L. Shultz, ’52, the theatre has a new Green Room. Completely furnished with paneled walls, carpeting and comfortable furniture, the room has been given by Phyllis in memory of her father. Dr. George Calvin Gressman, ’15, and her brother Dr. Malcolm E. Gressmon, ’48. This badly needed room has already become a haven for theatre students where they con quietly read study, socialize and share with their fellow theatre workers. Our special thanks to Phyllis for her continuing interest in theatre (which dates from her very active student days) for this superb addition to our facilities.
GRESSMAN-SHULTZ DRAMA AWARD Thanks should also be expressed publicly to Phyllis for her establishment and continuation of the Gressman-Shultz Drama Award, given annually since 1955 to the outstanding senior theatre student. The award is fully endowed and the recipient of this coveted award receives a plaque, cash award and their name is permanently engraved on the plaque which hangs in the Green Room. Recipients of the award in order since 1955 include; Nita Shannon, John Pullis, Alan Kepke, Joyce Bighan, Ralph Bender, Mary Ann Anderson, Barbara Bennett, Richard Davis Sandra Brenfleck. Jack Wright, Marilou Holford, James Granger, Greg Sabatino, Linda Grznar, Ten Hiatt, Ed Vaughan, David Mack, Bee Holford, Dee Hoty and Marty Bookwalter.
WORKSHOP THEATRE
The Theatre has acquired a “new” Workshop Theatre facility. Barlow Hall (formerly dinmg hall and lecture room) has been converted into a thrust stage intimate theatre seating approximately 150 Uses include various classes (such as acting, directing and creative dramatics), rehearsal space for all major shows and for the presentation of nine Workshop Theatre productions annually The Workshop Theatre is designed to provide advanced students with the opportunity to direct and for acting students to have the opportunity to develop their skills. The physical facilities of theatre such as settings-costumes-makeup are de-emphasized - the emphasis is upon acting and directing. The productions are normally scheduled for two day intervals so that after an initial presentation and critique at a 4 p.m. session further rehearsal may be held prior to a 7:30 |^m. presentation two days later. Remaining productions the fall quarter include a cutting of John Dos Passes U.S.A.f directed by John Cain and to be presented on Oct. 31 and Nov. 2, while A Merry Death, directed by Sue Ann Kocks will be presented on November 4 and 6. All interested persons are invited to attend these ‘‘rehearsal in progress” sessions.
