WORDLESS1

TONY DEGENARO

As in, when we talked, I said, “I don’t have anything to say.” I didn’t have anything to say when you asked me if I wanted “this to work.” Not to cleanse, to feel pathetic. I didn’t need to shower, there is no amount of grime that only THREE hours

nose, rolls over my lips; I will never kiss you again. Not that this should come as a surprise: how often do we think about showering when we are taking a shower? Do we ever really focus on the lathering of the soap, the slippery stuff on our arms, how when the good, but refuse to cut them out. Showers are a shitty place to escape. I do this all the time, bad day: shower-time. Because when problems overwhelm us, why not devote ourselves to an isolated, cell-like place where all we have to do is soap up and think?

there isn’t anything funny about someone telling you you’ve ruined her life. The end of the world, not birds, not snakes, not airplanes; a begging girl plucking my heartstrings like an indie band’s more punk-y tunes. I can’t believe it, I can’t believe it goes like this. “How can you do this to me?” You ask me that so many times. I don’t know what to say, I remain wordless. I can’t say anything when you ask if I ever wanted this to work, I can’t say anything when you ask if I ever loved you. out I settled to freeze in the cold water, and climbed out numb again. Surprise! It is ten when I leave the aquatic

shocked.

“But sometimes these kinds of things don’t work out, it’s not anybody’s fault, you can’t blame yourself.” it hard to remind myself that the only reason we are here is because you left me, and I told you I’d give it a try.

failure. Things start to blend... Piling up, I need a release... You’re gone, but I’m still burning in the face... I cannot bear all of this, I’m too young... I should take a shower to clear my mind. I suspect it will take a long time.

A Close RelationshiP by Marisa Rence

A round of applause for Marisa Rence’s A Close Relationship, the firstplace winner of our campus-wide cover contest. Rence said her inspiration for the piece was her relationship with a very close friend. They were going through a rough patch at the time, and painting was a way for Rence to come to terms with it. She represented her own feelings and thoughts with yellow (her favorite color), his with red, and their relationship with the 96 | QUIZ quilL Rence has three other works in this magazine. colors in & between.
