scene synopsis To add to the flavor of the 17* century setting we have created, the play will be done in its original five acts, with short “commercial breaks” between the acts when oranges will be sold, as they were in Paris in the 1660’s.

We don’t allow food in the Fritsche Theatre, so these “oranges” are inedible, but they are redeemable for a beverage of your choice at the one 15-minute intermission we will take, after Act Three.

director’s note Moli«e was the stage name taken by Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, born in 1622, the son of one of King Louis XIV’s royal upholsterers. Not a member of the aristocracy, Jean-Baptiste nevertheless grew up aroimd the richest court of the age, received an outstanding education, and could easily have followed his father in the family business. But not unlike Will Shakespeare a generation earlier, Jean-Baptiste left home to join a troupe of players. For a dozen years, he learned his craft, touring as an actor and beginning to write plays. In 1658, he and his troupe came into Paris and performed for the King. The tragedy they chose to perform flopped, but Moliae rescued the group by performing one of his own farces for the King. It was such a success that Louis granted him a theatre, and until his death in 1673, Molitte led the most popular troupe in Paris. He wrote more than 30 plays, including some of the greatest comedies ever created. The Miser, The Misanthrope, Schoolfor Wives, and Tartuffe.

Tartuffe, or the Impostor, was written in 1664, and was immediately attacked by the clergy and its political party, who took it as a challenge to religion. On the contrary, as one of the characters says, ‘What jewel more precious can there be than perfect, unfeigned piety?” But, he continues, some charlatans pretend to be holy, donning a mask of sanctimony in order to gamer wealth and power, deflecting people from seeing their sins by pointing them out in everyone else. Tartuffe is just such an impostor, a skillful con man, a glutton and a lecher, who worms his way into Orgon’s heart and home. How his family—^his wife, his son, his daughter, his brother-in-law, and even his maid—try to save themselves and Orgon himself from his blind infatuation is the subject of tonight’s comic masterpiece. Incidentally, the translation we are using is the witty and wicked Ranjit Bolt version first performed at the National Theatre of Great Britain in 2002.

______ profiles John Stefano (Director) has been Professor and Chairman of the Department of Theatre and Dance at Otterbein College since 1992. He has directed over forty productions, seventeen of them at Otterbein, including River, West Side Story, and last season’s Merchant of Venice. He began teaching at Southern Methodist University in 1975, and continued his academic career at Emporia State University in Kansas and Illinois State University where he was Department Chair and Mana^g Director of the Tllinnis Shakespeare Festival. In addition to administration and directing, he continues to teach at Otterbein, where his work focuses on acting and musical theatre. In 1998, he was awarded the KC-ACTF Gold Medallion Award of Excellence. He would like to thank his marvelous cast and crew for all of their hard work, and his design tpam and long-time collaborators, Rob Johnson, Greg Bell, Mard Hain, Rich Uhrick, and-most espedaUy-Kate Robbins for 21 years of devoted service to her students and her colleagues. We could not have done it without you, Katie.

Rob Johnson (Scenic & Lighting Designer) is in his 20th year as a professor in the Department of Theatre & Dance at Otterbein College, where he teaches theatrical design and computer graphics & animation. Past designs indude sets and lights for the department (sets for The Merchant Of Venice and 42”' Street, and lighting for Treluds To A Kiss) as well as two productions for the Contemporary American Theatre Company (CATCO), induding the light design for the world premiere of You’re My Boy, and the scenic design for Greater Tuna. He also designed the scenery and lighting for our third summer production of The 1940’s Radio Hour, working with one of his favorite directors, David Caldwell. Rob will take two Otterbein students as assistants when he serves as Guest Designer of sets and lights for Ohio Wesleyan University’s production of Henry IV, Part One later this season.

Kate Robbins (Costume Designer) is delighted to begin her final season with Otterbein College Theatre by designing one of her favorite plays, Tartuffe. Over the past 20 years, Kate has designed costumes for over 75 OCT productions and taught innumerable classes in stage makeup, mask making, costume construction, pattern drafting, costume history, costume rendering and costume design. She has also served as the supervisor for the design/technology interns, been active in USITT (United States Institute for Theatre Technology), assisted in recruiting new design/tech students, served as Interim Department Chair and as Design/Technology Area Coordinator, a job she fondly refers to as “similar to herding cats”. Some of her favorite designs for OCT mchidt Androcles and the Lion, Charlotte’s Web, Rubin Hood, Bi^ River, Arcadia, Moon Over Buffalo, To Kill a Mockingbird, Violet, The Merchant of Venice, The 1940’s Radio Hour and 42nd Street. profiles Marcia Haiti (Costume Shop Supervisor) has been a member of the Otterbein Theatre Tech Staff since 1989. She runs the costume shop full time and has also designed for the productions of Harv^, Dance 2006; Street Fest, YouhA Good Man Charlie Brown, Dance 2005 Passions, The Duckling + 2, The Music Man, Schoolhouse Pjock, Live!, The Afysteiy of Edwin Drood, A Guy, A Girl and Gershwin, Bkthe Spirit, The Secret Garden, Oklahoma, Hay Fever, Dance 2000, Pinocchio, How The Other Half Loves, Once Upon A Mattress, 1776, A Few Good Men, and Sherlock I Last Case. She also served as Associate Designer for Phantom. Ms. Main has an extensive background in Home Economics as well as commercial costuming and free-lance des^ and construction.

Melinda Murphy (Movement Coach) teaches Alexander Technique and Feldenkrais Method in the Otterbein Theatre and Dance Department, with application to movement, voice, characterization, singing and dance. Melinda is one of the few teachers trained in both methods; she combines them in her private practice in Columbus, and in classes and seminars for performing artists at other Ohio colleges. Since coming to Otterbein, she also trained to teach Fitzmaurice Voicework for its specialized tools for improving the voice and breath. Melinda has coached Otterbein productions since the turn of the century. She has also coached equestrians, figure skaters, musicians, and competitive barbershop quartets and choruses including the two-time international gold medalist Southern Gateway Chorus.

Melissa Nutting (Speech and Dialects Coach) teaches speech, dialects, and theatre history in the Department of Theatre and Dance at Otterbein College. She also serves as the resident speech and dialects coach for all productions. Some favorite Otterbein credits include Violet, The Women of Lockerbie, Crimes of the Heart, The Merchant of Venice, and Necessary Targets. Earlier this year, she coached the dialects for Ohio Wesleyan University’s production of Noises Off and this winter she will coach the dialects for Denison University’s production of Homebody! Kabul. Melissa holds an M.FA. in Acting from the combined program of Carnegie Mellon University and the Moscow Art Theatre in Russia and a B.F.A. in Acting from Carnegie Mellon. She is a founding company member of the American Studio Theatre in New York City and also served as the company’s resident voice and speech coada. Favorite roles include Marina in Volodya (LaM^a E.T.C.), Margaret in Pdchard III and Emilia in Othello (AST), Clytemnestra in The Greeks (Moscow Art Theatre), and the title role in Miss Julie (CMU). Melissa is a member of the Voice and Speech Trainers Association (VASTA).

Richard A. Uhrick (Scenic Studio Supervisor) is in his fourth season at Otterbein College. Before his return to his alma mater, he worked in Regional Theatres across the Midwest and New England. Including, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Merrimack Repertory Theatre, New American Theatre, Kansas City Repertory Theatre (at UMKC), and The Court Theatre in Chicago. He received his Master’s in Theatre Technology from UMKC in 1997. He now lives in Columbus with his wife Lisa.

They work with Ohio Pug Rescue to provide abandoned or surrendered Pugs [dogs] foster homes.

profiles David R. Bahgat (Tartxiffe) is a junior BFA Musical Theatre major from Upper Arlington. Tartt^e marks David’s fifth mainstage show. Credits include: Jesus Christ Superstar (Herod), The Merchant of Venice (Aragon), Prelude to a Kiss (Taylor) and the critically acclaimed 42nd Street (Bert Berry). This past summer David was seen in Harv^ Gaffney) and The 1940’s ^dio Hour (Neal Tilden) here at Otterbein Summer Theatre. Off campus credits include: West Side Story ^ernardo). Bat B^: The Musical (Rick/Lorraine) and most recendy Fiddler on the Poof (Motel) with Gallery Players. Kyle Bailey (Officer) is a senior Musical Theater major from Ketchickan, Alaska.

Previous Otterbein credits include The Music Man, Violet, Jesus Christ Superstar, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown (Snoopy), Dance Concert 2006: Street Fest, and 42^ Street.

Tartrfje marks Kyle’s first non-musical experience at Otterbein and Kyle is delighted to be a part of this cast.

Brad Barnes (Assistant Director/Dramaturg) is a junior BA majoring in both Theatre and Creative Writing. Last spring Brad assisted on the Director’s Circle production of The Emperor Jones by Eugene O’ Neil and he also plans to direct a workshop in the winter quarter. Brad is also working on his burgeoning playwriting. Brad would sincerely like to thank his family, girlfriend Cristina, friends and RA staff for putting up with his hectic schedule this quarter and for being supportive to the nth degree. “Vive Tartuffel” Jonelle Browne (Flipote) is a sophomore Acting major from Louisville, KY. She is excited to be making her second appearance on the Fritsche stage. Last year, she was seen partying in Prelude to A Krri. Jonelle would like to thank John for a fun experience; her parents for driving to support her; and Cesar for being such and excellent orange­ selling partner. “Whew!”

Chris Carter (Orgon) is a senior Musical Theatre major from West Carrollton, OH.Recent credits include Biff in The 1940’s Radio Hour, Wilson in the play, Harvy, and last spring’s portrayal of Julian Marsh in the musical 42^ Street. This coming winter, Chris plans to travel to NYC for an internship with CBS Primetime Casting.

He looks forward to graduation and would like to thank John for this new and interesting experience. Chris also thanks his family, esped^y his mother for her constant love and support “I wouldn’t be here without you!”

Lizzy Couture (Wardrobe Master) is a sophomore BA Theater and Psychology major from St Paul, MN. Her previous work with Otterbein College include Assistant Stage Manager for Prelude to a Kiss and 42^ Street, and Assistant director for Company and the Director’s Circle production Jump. In the winter she looks forward to tackling the script While We Were Bowling with Ed Vaughan and a beautiful cast She would like to thank her amazing crew for being patient with her, Kate and Mard for the new experience, Laura for roommate talks, family for unending support, and Pat for continuing love. “Thank you!”

She would like to thank her faniily for the past two years; through all the ridiculous highs and fabulous lows, the fierce class of ’08; as w^ as D. Tess Emerson (Madame Pernelle) is a junior Musical Theater major from Plain City, OH. Tess was last seen in Otterbein’s classroom project Necessary Targets (Jelena). Her previous Otterbein Credits include Prelude to a Kiss (ensemble) and Jesus Christ Superstar (ensemble). She spent this last summer performing at HersheyPark in the show Great Country! Tess is absolutely thrilled to share the stage this quarter with the wonderful cast of Tartuffe. She’d like to thank her family for their love and support Also, to the girls at the Cottage; “I don’t think I’d have made it this quarter without you girls!”

Abigale Donley Gregory (Dorine) is a junior BFA Acting major from Southlake, TX. This is her second appearance on the Fritsche Stage. She has also been seen in Necessary Targets (Azia), Jesus Christ Superstar zxid Watchdog. Abigale would like to thank her friends and cast members for their love and support, John, Melissa, and Melinda for being so wonderful, the amazing crew for getting her in her corset, and most of all her family for braving the cold yet again to come see her. “Thanks yall.”

Kate Murphy (Wig Master) is a senior Musical Theater major. Tartuffe marks Kate’s backstage debut, having previously appeared onstage as Dorothy Brock in 42^ Street, N erissa in The Merchant of Venice and Mariette in The Dinner Party. Other credits include Srvamp Baiy, The IJgJy Duckling +2, The Music Man, and Fiddler on the Roof with the Gallery Players. Sbe has no previous wig-maintenance experience whatsoever.

However, she spent a good portion of her childhood styling the hair of her My Little Ponies and Barbie dolls. Kate is looking forward to spending winter quarter on internship in New York City at Tara Rubin Casting. She would like to thank Katie Robbins, the senior BFAs, the sisters of Theta Nu Sorority, and her cat. Sawyer. “Go Team.”

Laura Prengaman (Master Painter) is working as Master Painter for the second time on Otterbein’s Traditional season. She painted You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brorvn in the winter of last year. Laura was also the painter for Otterbein Summer Theater 2006.

She would like to thank her roommate Lizzy for always being there for her, and Rob for such a great opportunity.

profiles Debbie Rutherford (Stage Manager) is a sophomore BA Theater major with a Business Administration minor. She is currently the Stage Manager for Tartuffe and enjoying it so much. The last shows she worked on were The 1940’s ’Radio Hour, Father Joy, and Harv^ as the Stage Management Apprentice, 42“' Street on costume crew, Prelude to a Kiss on set crew. You’re a GoodMan, Charlie Brom as follow spot operator, and Merchant of 'Venice as Assistant Stage Manager. She would like to thank her family (all of them) and friends. Debbie would like to especially thank Alicia and Laura, her roommates, for keeping her sane. “Thanks everyone for everything.”

James Sargent (Laurent) is a senior BFA Musical Theatre major from San Antonia Plis Otterbein credits include Tommy in The Music Man, Linus in Y>u’reA GoodMan Charlie Brown, and performances in several dance concerts. He spent last summer performing at The Utah Shakespeare Festival in The Green Show and HM.S. Pinafore.

Cory Smith (Cleante) is a sophomore BFA Musical Theatre major from Hilliard. He is extremely excited to be in his first major role on the Fritsche stage. A.J. has trained with California Institute of the Arts and U.C.LA in summer sessions from 2001 to 2004 and was named a California Arts Scholar in 2005. Previous hi^ school credits include George Antrobus in The Skin of Our Teeth, Beauregard in Marne! and Charlie in Flowers For Algernon. He would like to thank his parents and sister for their love and support, his 2009 BFA class, and his brothers at Pi Beta Sigma. “OFA.” Sarah Taylor (Assistant Technical Director) is a transfer student from Aquinas College where she started doing theater. She grew up in Grand Rapids, MI and still considers that her home. She came here for a better education in theater and so far has not been disappointed. While at Aquinas she worked as a student carpenter and volunteered as soundboard operator. She also was an intern for Circle Theater, one of the local community theaters. Now she works as a student carpenter for Otterbein.

Cesar Villavicencio (Laurent) is a Sophomore BFA Musical Theatre major with a Dance concentration from Miami, FL. His Otterbein Credits include chorus in 42nd Street znd ensemble in Dance Concert 2006-StreetFest. He has also portrayed the roles of Radu in ChurchiU’s Madforest, Enoch Jr. in Carousel, and Chino in West Side Story. He sends his love to his caring family and unconditional friends that give him endless support “Que faire (N)tTiat to do) avec ces oranges!” Representing BFA class of ’09.

Lauren Williams (Assistant Stage Manager) is a freshman BFA Design/Tech major from Dublin. Her past Otterbein credits include Otterbein Summer Theater 2006 (Technical Apprentice) and Company (Electrics Crew). In high school, she vras Set Designer for My Fair Lady and Costume Designer for Radium Girls. She would like to thank her family and friends for all of their constant support, the cast and crew for being wonderful to work with, and the Otterbein Class of ’10, “You are all amazing.”

about the translator_________ Ranjit Bolt was bom in Manchester, England, in 1959. He is one of Britain’s leading translators for the stage. His translations (most of them in rhyming verse) have been produced by the National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company and Sir Peter Hall, and in leading repertory theatres in the US. He was awarded an OBE in the 2003 New Year honours list for services to literature.

theatre at Otterbein PROF SMITH (Part of a series cekhrating the centennial of theatre at Otterbein College} John Franklin Smith was a Christian gentleman - kindly, generous and dedicated to the service of students and to Otterbein College. For nearly a quarter of a century and almost alone, he directed the college’s speech and dramatic activities with patience, understanding and distinction, leaving an indelible imprint on the lives of hundreds.

Bom in 1880 on a farm in Indiana, he did not appear on the Otterbein College campus until he was twenty-6ve; he was thirty years old when he graduated in 1910. In 1927, he was asked by President Walter G. Clippinger to become the head of the Speech and Dramatics department at Otterbein College. Under his direction, Otterbein College students did well in debates and oratorical contests. A Shakespeare play at Commencement became a tradition.

At the age of 70, Prof Smith retired &om teaching, but he was not satisfied to remain at home. He became a part-time janitor at the college gymnasium, explaining, ‘Tm retreaded, not retired.” When he was eighty-five, he hit his head and became blind. A physician told him that he mi^t be aided some by exercising on a stationary bicycle, and every day he carried out this instruction. One morning in October, 1966, when he was breakfasting with his wife, he exclaimed, “I can see you!” His sight gradually improved, so that he could again stroll around the town.

His story of perseverance and courage in times of adversity attracted the attention of Charles Kuralt, and in 1967 he appeared on CBS. Prof Smith once said, “As I look back, life has been a series of doors. I walk up to one, then I step through. One of these days, I shall approach a door I will know is not the one across the street that I have gone throu^ to work, live and enjoy. When this door comes, I will cross it with confidence and pass through with joy and faith. In all my prayer now and forever wifl be the short, but meaningful part, ‘God bless Otterbein.”’

John Franklin Smith died in 1969, at the age of 89.

Through the aging of the family’s matriarch and the medical complications faced by her two doctor sons, the health care crisis becomes a personal struggle and a life altering experience. Kia last visited the Otterbein College campus in 1995 when she was commissioned to write Cat Nc^ Alle^nce.

Poetic Pandemic is an Otterbein Studio Production, part of a new series of contemporary, avant-garde works in a workshop atmosphere.
