Director’s Note The Understudy introduces us to three people striving to prove their self worth “in a world that’s gone so far down the road into existential shame and anxiety that the self can’t even regenerate a sense of being.” Clearly influenced by Franz Kaflta, Theresa Rebeck gives us three individuals burdened with guilt, isolation and anxiety malting a futile search for a way to justify their existence. The stuff of comedy! In Theresa Rebeck’s hands it is. What better backdrop for Kafka’s theme of the hopelessness of the individual’s attempts to revolt against the absurd than the Broadway and film industry? The search for authentic value or connection becomes ridiculous in an industry that pays a movie star $2.3 million to yell, “GET IN THE TRUCK!” The Understudy asks the question, “How can you prove you are who you say you are?” While Kaf ka’s works might leave us half-smiling and half weeping. Rebeck gives us per mission to laugh heartily and, perhaps, even find some relief in accepting and surrendering to the absurdity.

—Christina Kirk, Director

Franz Kafka Franz Kafka was a Czech-born, German-speaking, Jewish philosopher and writer born in Prague on July 3, 1883. The eldest of six children, born to a salesman father and a mother who was a prosperous brewer and more educated chan her husband, Franz had a turbulent relationship with his father because of his father’s authoritarian and demtinding character. Kafka first studied chemistn' at Charles-Ferdinand University in Prague, but switched after two weeks to law; After his first year of studies, he met Max Brod who would become a close friend and would later publish Kafka’s works and writings. Thanks largely to Brod’s efforts, Kafka’s slim, enigmatic corpus was gradually recognized as one of the great monuments of 20th-century literature. Kafka did not attempt to shock readers with detailed descriptions of horrific scenes; he preferred blunt absurdity. Many of Kafka’s writings focus on die quest for meaning and wisdom as weO as the alienation of the individual in society. His works include: The Metamorphosis, The Trial, The Castle, The Judgment, A.merika, ]osepbine the Singer, or The Mouse Folk, andM Hunger Artist, all published posthumously. There is an ongoing legal controversy about the works w'hich remain unpublished. In 1939, Max Brod boarded a train to Palestine carrying a suitcase scuffed with Kafka’s unpublished w'ritings. Some of the contents of this suitcase were never published, and after Brod’s death, they c;ime into the possession of Brod’s lover, Esther Hoffe, The legal question is this: Should Kafka’s w'ritings remain private property or should they belong to all of humanity? The case has dragged on in the courts for two years with no new developments.

(verb) 1) to learn a role in order to replace the regular ac tor when necessary. 2) (noun) an actor who learns the lines and/or choreography of a leading performer. j Understudies are not to be confused with standbys. Although both have very simi5|ar jobs, understudies have a bigger undertaking as they have to learn a role as op posed to Just being in the ensemble. There is also a swing who knows all the ensem ble parts. If the understudy goes on, the swing will fill the regular chorus role of the understudy.
