WHAT MAkES OTTERBEIN A SpEcIAl plAcE? You’ve heard the expression… The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. And while each of the parts of an Otterbein education offers something incredible, it really is the whole experience that changes the lives and the futures of every student here.

Specifically, our President/CEO, along with our CFO, were both graduates. They make sure you have firsthand experiences—research, internships, travel, leadership, service—that not only change the way you see the world, they change the way you see yourself.

You feel supported and safe living on a beautiful and friendly campus in one of the country’s most livable college towns, with many prospects for jobs and play in the country’s 15th largest city.

That is what distinguishes Otterbein and those who are prepared to be leaders, change agents and problem solvers. The whole Otterbein experience is greater than the sum of its parts. Now the big question…

Are you ready to add yourself to this equation?

“The Honor Roll schools should be proud of their work to elevate the role of service-learning on their campuses … I hope we’ll see more and more colleges and universities following their lead.” EDuARDO OcHOA u.s. department of education’s assistant secretary for Postsecondary education on otterbein and other schools named to the President’s award for general community service honor roll

WHAT SETS AN OTTERBEIN EDucATION ApART? INTEgRATIvE WHAT? Some schools call it general education. But at Otterbein, our required Integrative Studies (IS) curriculum is anything but general. In fact, experts call Otterbein’s curriculum the model they hope other schools follow. Think of it like this: The problems we face in the world—like poverty and hunger or global economic turmoil—aren’t specific to any one discipline. Solving them requires true global thinking—comprehension that crosses culture and discipline. Integrated thinking. Each one of the eight required IS courses you’ll take builds upon the last, while also building multiple skills, competencies and understanding through an interdisciplinary approach. This means you might choose “The Soundtrack of Your First Year” for your First Year Seminar and end with Senior Dyad courses about “Culture Wars” to examine the war of words and ideas, while also considering what’s hot and what’s not in American Popular Culture. Learning this way—as our alumni will tell you—truly prepares you for the complexities that await you in your professions and your communities.

5

WHAT ARE THE fIvE gOAlS Of INTEgRATIvE STuDIES? 1

To inspire intellectual curiosity about the world;

2

To assist students in cultivating intercultural knowledge;

3

To promote active and critical reflection on the human self and its place in the world;

4

To challenge students to critically examine ethical responsibilities; and

5

To encourage purposeful public engagement and social responsibility.

Why will I be proud to tell people I am an Otterbein Cardinal? What are the makings of an Otterbein student? Knowledge You’ll be smarter, more well-rounded and better prepared because of Otterbein’s nationally recognized curriculum. You’ll learn to see through a global lens so you can envision what’s possible and where your focus is needed most. Service If you believe it’s important to make a difference—take heart. Otterbein students are known across the country for their commitment to service. Values You’ll understand how values like diversity, equality, inclusiveness, opportunity, lifelong learning and service are just as important at Otterbein today as they were in 1847. Experience As an authority in experiential learning we know you learn best when you get to apply lessons from the classroom to real-world situations with your own two hands. Leader You’ll be ready—to land a job, to explore, to solve problems, to change things and to blaze your own trail—because of how Otterbein prepares you to lead.

23

Otterbein is consistently ranked in the top 10 percent of Master’s (Midwest) Universities in “America’s Best Colleges” by U.S. News and World Report. Otterbein has been recognized by the White House for seven consecutive years on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction.* *This is one of the highest awards a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement.

Otterbein has a 166-year commitment to being inclusive and is one of the nation’s leaders in co-education. Women served as faculty and were admitted as students from Otterbein’s founding in 1847.

HOW WIll OTTERBEIN’S MISSION SHApE ME AS A lEADER? Otterbein’s mission is to educate the whole person in a context that fosters the development of humane values. What does that mean? It means Otterbein helps you become the kind of person who not only cares about making the world better—you’ll also know how to solve problems and offer innovative change to actually make it better. Some people call this being a change agent. We just call it being an Otterbein Cardinal.

Otterbein was one of only six schools nationwide chosen to serve as a site for the Association of American Colleges and Universities’ project* on experiential learning. *Otterbein, Tufts and Georgetown are part of the AAC&U’s national “Bringing Theory to Practice” project.

Students are valued leaders at Otterbein where they are voting members of two critical governing bodies: the University Senate and the University Board of Trustees.

What are three facts that PROVE Otterbein’s “Common Book” IS uncommonly good? 1. Through years of experience, one of the oldest "Common Book" programs in the nation has also grown into one of the best. 2. Students, faculty and staff choose from some 50 books each year to find a contemporary selection that welcomes new students into Otterbein’s intellectual community. (Thanks to a visionary alumna, you'll get your copy of the Common Book free of charge.) 3. Not only will you hear from the book's author in person—you’ll have a year’s worth of event and programming examining the book's themes and issues from different perspectives and through multiple disciplines.

What is bigger than ever but its footprint is the smallest it has ever been? The collection of resources, knowledge and information you have access to at the Courtright Memorial Library, which includes: • More than 300,000 items in physical form • 500 current print serial subscriptions • More than 10,000 electronic subscriptions • OhioLink, which gives Otterbein students full access to 89 college and university libraries and their 48 million books and scores of other library materials (BTW, got a multi-media project due? The library loans equipment like laptops, webcams, camcorders, flip cams, digital cameras and voice recorders.)

How can I apply to Otterbein?

What is Otterbein’s Admission Criteria?

There are three ways you can take this exciting step. All of them begin by visiting:

Admission to Otterbein University is based on a student's overall potential for academic success. Decisions are made after a holistic review of grades earned through the junior year as well as other criteria, including ACT or SAT scores, application essay, activities and involvement, and guidance counselor recommendation. Otterbein places more emphasis on the academic transcript, as we believe it is one of the best indicators of student success and college preparation. Each student is also considered for the unique talents and contributions he or she will offer to the Otterbein community.

www.otterbein.edu/apply 1. Apply online. 2. Otterbein is also a participating institution of the “Common Application.” 3. Print and return a paper application.

What is the best way to keep up-to-date about my Otterbein status? Check your Otterbein VIP page for your application status and your “to-do” list. Haven’t activated your VIP page yet? Make a quick visit to www.otterbein.edu/VIP and, in less than two minutes, you’ll be online with Otterbein.

What are all of the pieces of a complete Otterbein application? • Complete online application • Official SAT or ACT test scores (Otterbein recommends having test scores sent directly from the testing agency.) • Official high school transcripts • Letter of recommendation • Personal essay (250 words) • $25 Application fee

What are Otterbein’s codes for sharing test scores and FAFSA? FAFSA 003110 ACT 3318 SAT 1597

Do any programs have additional application criteria? YES. Admission to the Honors Program, Nursing and Zoo & Conservation Science programs have additional academic requirements. Admission to Theatre and Music require an audition and Art requires a portfolio review. Additional details are available from the Office of Admission.

When can I expect to hear about… …whether I’ve been accepted? Otterbein begins accepting students on Nov. 1. If your application is complete, it is usually reviewed in about three to four weeks. …whether I am receiving any scholarships? We know this is important news. Your merit package (awards based on academic performance) arrives within a few weeks of your acceptance. Your financial aid package (awards based on need) will come in the spring starting after March 15.

When should I visit Otterbein? As soon as you can. We can’t wait to learn more about you. We want you to get a feel for campus and see if Otterbein might be the perfect fit for you. There are several visit options depending on where you are in your decision-making process. If you haven’t applied but you’re interested: Come to “Otterbein 101,” a small group conversation that includes an info session, campus tour and individual Q&A.

29

If you’ve applied and been accepted: Consider the “Explore Otterbein” program for an overnight visit and the chance to shadow a student for an up-close-andpersonal look at life at Otterbein. Or, let us create an Individual Conference just for you, including faculty and financial aid appointments. Otterbein also hosts special programs throughout the year for visiting students in the fall and accepted students in the spring. To plan your visit: www.otterbein.edu/visit
