OPENING WEEKEND 2011
STUDENTS DIVE INTO CAMPUS
HANNAH CROFT Opening Weekend is always a big deal for the Campus Involvement Center (CIC) because it helps to set the tone for the rest of the quarter with a successful weekend of events. The CIC hopes to welcome incoming as well returning students with a wide array of activities. The weekend kicked off on Thursday night with a Movie on the Green featuring the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean. A large screen was brought out behind Memorial Auditorium so students could sit on college green on the grass or with a blanket and enjoy a movie under the stars. Free popcorn and Pepsi products were also provided for anyone interested in these traditional movie-watching snacks. The real excitement of Opening Weekend always lies in the Annual Bobcat Bash at Baker University Center. Ohio University Athletics helped and brought some of their famous inflatables such as the boxing ring with oversized boxing gloves to the bash. The inflatables went outside along with as much free food as catering could provide. On the other side of Baker, along the pillars outside West 82 was an electronic dance party put on courtesy of Athen’s own Dave Rave. However, the inside of Baker is really

where all the fun was with various black jack tables available with winners getting to enter in a raffle for a chance to win one of the many prizes given away that night. Prizes were raffled off every half hour all night during the bash with over $5000 dollars in prizes being given away at the end of the night. Prizes included DVD bundles, Bobcat apparel and even a futon. On Saturday came a new event, A Year in a day. The CIC collaborated with the student organization, University Program Council, to give students a taste of what
they see in a year at Ohio University in a few short hours. Various student organizations came to South Beach and set up tents and displays to show off to new students. A stage was set up for performances by the Singing Men of Ohio, as well as Title IX. The Greeks also came out and gave us a glimpse of their annual air bans competition. Although the heat was sweltering all day, students still managed to come out and have a good time. The day ended with a bang with a foam dance party, once again deejayed by Dave Rave. By Sunday, students had the opportunity to attend an event at Ping Center showing off their various athletic offerings. Finally, on the Monday before classes starts the Involvement Fair is typically held sprawling across College Green. However, due to undesirable weather conditions, the fair was moved to the Convocation Center where over 300 student organizations were featured for incoming freshman and other interested students to see what Ohio University has to offer. Opening Weekend definitely set the tone for a very successful quarter full of diverse events and activities appealing to a wide variety of bobcats.

I can honestly say that working in the CIC this year has been the best job that I could have in college. As an aspiring event coordinator, it is key to have a vast amount of experience and the CIC has definitely given me those skills to help me in my career. I look forward to going into work and spending time with my creative staff and am happy to say I will be leaving college with an extended family.

COMEDY SERIES
BLUE PENCIL COMEDY
Brewing up laughs each week in the Front Room HANNAH CROFT In collaboration with the student organization, Blue Pencil Comedy, the Campus Involvement Center cosponsored a comedy stand-up event every Saturday night in the Front Room. This event not only gave students the chance to experience great live stand-up done by their peers, but they were also given the chance to participate themselves. Blue Pencil Comedy hosted a workshop session starting at 7:00 p.m. every Saturday for those interested in testing their funny bone. This workshop was beneficial for newcomers as well as seasoned veterans. It was used to help comedians test out new material and learn from others. The workshop also helped to give those new to stand-up some confidence
8
before taking to the stage the first time. After the workshop around 8:00 p.m., the real fun began as students took to the Front Room stage hoping to get a laugh or two out of the audience. The audience usually provided a very welcoming atmosphere to those new to comedy and soon everyone was laughing including the comedian. This event has become a standard part of the CIC calendar and has enjoyed great success. Blue Pencil Comedy has been a wonderful student organization to collaborate with as they run most of the event on their own every week and have built up quite a following. People expect to see standup in the Front Room on Saturday night and Blue Pencil Comedy tends to deliver just that.

The atmosphere just seemed very welcoming so I thought I should give it a try. I got my friends, Kevin and Tyler, to do it with me and we took two weeks to prepare sets. The stand-up went awesome! Everything went smoothly, all my friends came out, and I got some good laughs. The experience of doing stand up was like nothing I’ve had and it’s quite a rush. The Front Room is a perfect setting for stand-up comedy. This is my first year working as the photographer for the Campus Involvement Center. I was not sure what to expect at first, and after my first quarter I am so grateful for this opportunity. Not only is the staff incredibly talented and friendly but I am able to add some new amazing photographs to my portfolio from all of the different and exciting events. The Campus Involvement Center has something to offer everyone on campus. They provide fun and FREE student activities throughout the year that appeal to all students. I am excited to see what the rest of the year has in store and I hope other students take advantage of this awesome opportunity that is available right here on campus.
other fun activities for incoming freshman to give them a taste of what life is like here at OU. The South Beach Splash as well as Aqua Massage were some water themed events that made waves among students. Roller Skating in Baker made a comeback this year after its initial success, and Parent’s Weekend always packs a big punch with comedy acts and dinner theaters. Finally, the first ever Movie Poster Event gave students the chance to put their face in their favorite movie poster. Thanks to our Performing Arts Series big names such as Janelle Monáe, Aziz Ansari and O.A.R were able to perform in Memorial Auditorium this fall. Janelle Monáe’s Campus Conscientious tour came to Athens in October as did famed comedian, Aziz Ansari. Both shows provided affordable entertainment to students. Grammy-winning artist, O.A.R. even made it on a Tuesday night to play in front of an incredibly energized crowd, ending fall quarter with a bang towards the beginning of November. These are just a small selection of the events the CIC does to ensure students are having a safe and enjoyable time at OU. — Hannah Croft

SOUTH BEACH SPLASH HANNAH CROFT On Saturday, Sept. 17, the Campus Involvement Center was proud to host the South Beach Splash on South Green. Students could come in bathing suits or not, but it was pretty impossible to stay dry at this event. With a giant water slide, fake surfboarding, water gun fights and a slip and slide, it was almost impossible to avoid any splashes.
Despite some colder temperatures, South Beach Splash was still a success. OU senior, Josh Juron said, “It was wet, muddy, messy and awesome. (It) should be done again. There was one big slide that was awesome. Free food was also available courtesy of OU Dining. They brought some great beach favorites like hotdogs and nachos. Fun was had by all who swung by South Beach on this fall Saturday afternoon.

PARENTS WEEKEND 2011
Mysteriously entertaining
Dinner theater and stand-up comedy bring a piece of Chicago to Athens HANNAH CROFT The Fall Quarter Parent’s Weekend was a great success with a dinner theater, brunch and comedy tour to keep parent’s entertained. The Campus Involvement Center was proud to host a dinner theater in the Baker Theater Ballroom on the evening of Friday, Sept. 30. Parents and students alike were in for an evening of entertainment and great food with Mobsters, Molls and Marinara. Guests were transported back in time to the roaring 20s in mob-filled Chicago. During the show, a certain guest was murdered and the rest were put to the test to solve the mystery. OU parent, Annette Brown said, “We really enjoyed coming up to OU for Parent’s Weekend...
Contrary to popular belief, it’s not just for parents of Freshman! I’ve always wanted to do a murder mystery dinner party but never have been able to make it to one. I thought it was a really fun family dinner.” The next morning, University Program Council in collaboration with the Dean of Student’s Office hosted the annual Parent’s Brunch. Parents and students were given a delicious brunch along with entertainment by the Tempo Tantrum’s, OU’s own women’s a capella group. That evening Chicago’s Second City Comedy Tour made its debut in Memorial Auditorium thanks to the Performing Arts Series. All in all, it was an enjoyable weekend for parents and students alike.
THE SECOND CITY “As a parent I really enjoyed the entire evening. It was a great time and a lot of fun. Hilarious!” Brenda Prater-Brooks, OU Parent

Midway baker bash
HANNAH CROFT On Oct. 7, the second Baker Bash of fall quarter filled all of Baker University Center with carnival-themed festivities. One of the most successful events of the quarter, thousands of students filtered through the different floors of Baker enjoying all kinds of carnival goodies. The first floor featured the first ever bumper cars in Baker. Right behind the escalators in front of the guest services desk was placed a giant flooring for the bumper cars to drive across. After bumper cars, students were treated to some caramel apples near the entrance of the

first floor. Continue up the escalator to the second floor and students were met with a variety of carnival games filling up the Theater Lounge. Every game won gave a student a raffle ticket to be entered for a chance to win two free tickets to the Mike Posner Concert during Homecoming weekend. One lucky student, Mattie Sprague did just that. She said, “I enjoyed the Midway Baker Bash. It was fun and I never would have thought that I would have won Mike Posner tickets!”

Also featured in the Theater Lounge were some sidecar performers who did everything from swallowing swords to bending into positions some pretzels couldn’t even manage. Students could also participate in card tricks and other simple magic tricks put on by the performers. On the third floor, lines of carnival-goers wrapped around the banisters surrounding the escalators for the caricature artist as well as the spray tattoo artist. Both stations were a huge hit among students. Finally, the fourth floor featured a psychic fair with psychics and tarot card readers available to any student wishing to have some questions answered. This area was so popular, CIC workers had trouble shutting it down at the end of the night with some students refusing to get out of line. After hours of tarot cards flying, raffle tickets twirling and food disappearing, the Midway Baker Bash turned out to be an amazing success.

His act was opened by Joe Mande, a comedian who quickly “shook any weak expectations and had the auditorium filled with laughter,” according to blogger Nicole Spears. She continued by describing Ansari’s act as “nothing short of a riot.” Ansari began the evening by posing for the audience to take pictures which included a fake fight with an audience member. He followed with jokes about marriage, online dating experiences and family stories. Todd Thomas, a graduate student in the college student personnel program, commented, “Aziz was just as funny live as he is when he’s on TV ... Getting to see Aziz perform live was probably one of my most memorable experiences at Ohio University thus far.” Aziz filled the auditorium with incredible energy as he interacted with the crowd, incorporating them into the routine. Spears describes her favorite bit saying, “Nothing had me laughing quite as hard as Ansari’s comparison of a bad choice in partner to that old sweater in your closet that you never liked anyways.”

I absolutely love working in the Campus Involvement Center. It has allowed me to learn so much about event planning and understand that it is something I’m passionate about. AMBERLE QUACKENBUSH On Tuesday, Nov. 1st, the students of Ohio University welcomed O.A.R. to the TempletonBlackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. According to blogger Jordan Simmons, a school of communications student, “the band brought a revolution of fantastic music and great entertainment for the college environment in Athens.” She continued to write in her blog “the entire feel of the show was upbeat, and everyone present enjoyed a band that has come such a long way. Fans cheered blissfully when the band played their first recording, 'The Wanderer' ... It was great to be surrounded by people who really loved the band and were following O.A.R. in their successful music journey.” Other songs performed that night were “That was a Crazy Game of Poker,” “City on Down,” and their most recent hit, “Shattered.” Throughout the concert, the lead singer of O.A.R., Marc Roberge, reminisced about the "good 'ole days" during high school and college, during the band's rise to fame. Simmons’ overall experience was described as “phenomenal.” Twitter fan Dillon Stewart, @Dstew12, said “It was amazing. Best OAR show I’ve ever been to!”

The elaborate set also transformed Memorial Auditorium into a Broadway Stage making those in the audience feel as if they were in New York City instead of Athens, Ohio. Big names such as O.A.R. and Janelle Monáe also graced Memorial Auditorium’s stage delivering heartfelt and energetic performances. Offering a wide variety of musical taste, the Mountain Stage Tour brought some variety to the stage with national acts such as The Jayhawks, Karin Casey and more. For those interested in the jazzier side of things, the Miles Davis Experience provided a jazz experience like no other. The goal of the Performing Arts Series is to bring shows and big names usually only accessible in large cities to Athens for an even better price. This fall, it managed to do just that. — Hannah Croft

Working at the Campus Involvement Center has given me the opportunity to take what I learn in the classroom and apply it to real-world situations. I appreciate that the projects I work on push me both creatively and organizationally. My experience at the CIC gives me the confidence that I will be prepared for life after graduation. I'm so glad that I get to be a part of such a talented team of people who are all passionate about providing purposeful and entertaining programming on campus.

individuals participated in Opening Weekend activities The Campus Involvement Center staff would like to thank the many students and student organizations that helped make our fall quarter programming a success. Without our student programming interns, the Campus Involvement Center staff would not have been able to provide the extensive programming that occurred fall quarter. These talented students have been instrumental in the planning, marketing, implementation and assessment of each and every program featured in this issue. Providing students with opportunities where they can apply what they are learning in the classroom to actual hands on experience has proven to be beneficial in many ways. The students are perfecting skills and developing portfolios that will help them in their future employment. The Campus Involvement Center has a direct pipeline to our student population to insure that the programming we provide is meeting our student population needs. Finally, the university community is enriched with
a variety of diverse programs. A variety of student organizations also added to the success of fall quarter. The University Program Council, the Black Student Cultural Programming Board, POWER/GAMMA, Student Senate and our social Greek Letter organizations helped us kick off the school year with the Opening Weekend activities. These groups also continued to collaborate throughout fall quarter. The on-going programs, the Emerging Artist Series, Open Stage and Blue Pencil Comedy all featured the talent of Ohio University students. It has been a privilege to be able to provide a venue for up and coming singers, song writers and comedians to hone their craft. One can see that our Ohio University students are instrumental in the success of our programs. Thank you “STUDENTS” for a successful fall quarter. We look forward to seeing you at our winter quarter programs. —Campus Involvement Center Programming Team D I V I S I O N O F S T U D E N T A F FA I R S | O H I O U NI V ERS I TY

The classic Mel Brooks movie was ALIVE when it made its way to Athens! This wickedly inspired re-imagining of the Frankenstein legend followed bright young Dr. Frankenstein (that’s Fronkensteen) as he attempted to create a monster—but not without scary and hilarious complications.
