International Profile 2012 Presented by

The College of International Studies

Message from the Dean of the College of International Studies

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA INTERNATIONAL PROFILE 2012 I am pleased to present the University of Oklahoma’s 2012 International Profile. The following report details the numbers of OU students studying abroad for academic credit and highlights the University’s diverse international student population. In its second year, the College of International Studies continues to grow, thanks to the visionary leadership of President David Boren. The College is committed to substantially increasing the number of OU students studying abroad and to serving the large number of international students from around the world that choose to study at OU. Since President Boren issued a call for increased study abroad numbers four years ago, the total number of program participants has jumped an astounding 43% (from 646 to 926), with an 11% increase in the last year alone (831-926). This continued growth demonstrates the importance of international experience and is especially remarkable given the economic climate of the past few years. Despite the growth, there remains much to do to meet the President’s challenge of increasing the number of OU students studying abroad. First, we need to strengthen partnerships with universities abroad that will target student needs and services while overseas. Second, we need to encourage the continued growth and support of OU faculty led programs so that our students may take OU courses in an international setting. We should also dedicate efforts to recruit and place OU students in study abroad programs by enhancing credit transfer and course equivalency procedures here on campus. Finally, there should be an increase in scholarship opportunities to offset the financial cost of traveling and living abroad. As the number of OU students studying abroad has increased, so has the number of international students studying at OU. International Student Services (ISS) is responsible for assisting nearly 2,000 international students and their dependents that currently reside and study here. In the past year OU enrolled students from over 110 countries. The total numbers of enrolled international students are up 31% from the Spring 2009 semester (from 1,381 to 1,820). Mirroring national trends, the top three countries of student representation at OU are China, India and Saudi Arabia. The College of Engineering, College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Earth and Energy have the highest numbers of international students in their programs. Regarding classification, just slightly over 50% of OU’s international students are working on graduate degrees. Given the growth of international students at OU, we have expanded our ISS staff to keep up with the vital immigration work of the office. A sponsored student advisor and a new international admissions specialist allow for even more effective and efficient service to the university’s international student population. Looking forward, we should continue to explore ways to enhance the University’s efforts to recruit and retain excellent international students and familiarize them with academic and daily lives on campus. As more and more degree-seeking internationals students come to study at the university, there will be a growing need to ensure proper immigration service and orientation to enhance their experience while studying here. Our College and the ISS office are committed to doing just that. Although the offices of Education Abroad and International Student Services are housed in the College of International Studies, they serve the entire OU campus and collaborate with many to ensure the highest quality service as possible. The work they do is vitally important for the internationalization of OU and the successes of the past year are due in no small measure to the hard work and dedication of an excellent staff. I would like to express my gratitude for the tireless work of

Education Abroad Director Alice Kloker and EA advisors Kristian Savic, Tina Henderson, Kye LeBoeuf, Brooke Hammer and Shanna Vincent. I am also grateful for the tireless work of ISS Director Monica Sharp, Assistant Director Mariana Mircheva and ISS advisors Brenda Chaney, Robyn Stewart, Sarah Dysart, Caroline MacLeod and Emilie Gordon. International education at OU is a team effort, and we are thankful for everyone across campus who help create, implement and strengthen international educational opportunities for all OU students. Finally, a special thanks to CIS Marketing and PR Specialist, Jacque Braun, whose creative touch with this report and all of our marketing efforts is always appreciated. Suzette Grillot Interim Dean, College of International Studies Max and Heidi Berry Chair

EDUCATION ABROAD HIGHLIGHTS Alice Kloker, Director, Education Abroad Alice is from Minneapolis, Minnesota where she developed an interest in international affairs at an early age as a summer camper at the Concordia Language Villages and later as a student of German and Russian at her public high school. Her undergraduate degree in political science from Grinnell College included a semester abroad in Mexico and Guatemala. After college, Alice lived first on the US/Mexico border working with asylum seekers in El Paso, Texas and then in an Andean community in Peru with a local non-governmental human rights organization. She received an M.A. in political science and feminist studies from the University of Minnesota in 2002, and then worked at the Center for Global Education at Augsburg College managing customized travel seminars to Mexico, Central America and Southern Africa until she moved to Oklahoma in 2007. Education Abroad Mission: to provide University of Oklahoma students with safe, academically relevant and personally transformative study abroad opportunities across the world.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SERVICES

Monica Sharp, Director, International Student Services, PDSO/RO Monica Sharp is the Director of the OU ISS office. She also advises students, faculty and staff on student immigration regulations. Monica has worked professionally in New York, Seattle, and Oklahoma in the field of immigration assistance and advocacy since 1997, and has expertise in student visas, familybased and employment-based nonimmigrant and immigrant petitions, family reunification, and more. Monica is fluent in Spanish and proficient in French, and has lived in Santiago de Compostela, Spain and Strasbourg, France, both times as an international student, and has traveled widely in Europe and Latin America. Monica holds a BA in Letters and Spanish from OU, and an MA in Spanish, also from OU.

Monica has been on the other side of the looking glass numerous times, traveling extensively and being an expat in Spain, France and Italy. Currently, she and her family are living and teaching in Arezzo, Italy for the 2012-2013 academic year as a part of the OU in Arezzo study abroad program. Her husband, Dr. Jason Houston, is an associate professor of Italian at OU; in Arezzo, Monica divides her time teaching and supporting OU in Arezzo while continuing to assist OU ISS remotely. ISS Services • Advises OU’s international students and their dependents on matters directly related to their US immigration status. • Protects the immigration status of international students while working with them to obtain the maximum allowable benefits under the law. • Issues Forms I-20 and DS-2019 in support of F-1 and J-1 visa applications, in cooperation with OU Admissions and the Center for English as a Second Language (CESL), and provide consular support and information. • Administers OU’s Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) to ensure compliance with federal laws and regulations. • Provides expanded student outreach and services through Open Houses, travel signature sessions, Form Friday, on-line and in-person Workshops and International Student Speaker Series. • Liaises with colleges to raise their awareness of their own international students, issues, and need for support at the college level.
