Urban Institute Salary: Paid Duration: Summer Location: Washington, D.C. Job Title: UI Associate Urban Institute believes in the power of evidence to improve lives and strengthen communities. Public policies work best when they are rooted in facts, and their research sparks solutions in programs and practice. Analyses and recommendations help expand opportunities for all people, reduce hardship among the most vulnerable, and strengthen the effectiveness of the public sector. Although the Urban Institute does not have a formal internship program, they hire research assistants on a temporary basis for full-time and part-time assignments during the academic year and during the summer. The position of UI Associate is responsible for assisting senior researchers in various policy areas such as housing, welfare, population studies, health, and education policy. Incumbents will conduct literature reviews, analyses and programing tasks, as well as participate in reporting research findings and presenting data. They conduct sophisticated research to understand and solve real-world challenges in a rapidly urbanizing environment. Their work engages communities at multiple levels — city, state, and country — as they gather data and evaluate programs. Urban Institute’s scholars blend academic rigor with on-the-ground collaboration, teaming with policymakers, community leaders, practitioners, and the private sector to diagnose problems and find solutions.

American Association of University Women Salary: Paid Duration: Summer Location: Washington D.C. Job Title: Public Policy and Governmental Relations The American Association of University Women (AAUW), officially founded in 1881, is a non-profit organization that advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research. The organization has a nationwide network of 150,000 members, 1,500 branches, and 500 college and university partners. Its headquarters are in Washington, DC. AAUW promotes equity and education for women and girls. Issues of interest to the organization include education, social, economic, and political reform. Internships will vary but may include work with social media, donor communications, event planning, and/or government and policy relations. AAUW uses advocacy, education, philanthropy and research as tools to further enhance female equality. Since AAUW’s founding, members and supporters have spoken out about policies important to women and girls. Without their voices, invaluable legislation would have never been passed. In recent years, such legislation included the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, and the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. AAUW’s policy work connects and rallies advocates at the local, state, national, and global levels to advance and empower women and girls.

Center for International Policy Salary: Unpaid Duration: Spring/Summer/Fall Location: Washington D.C. Job Title: Development and Operations Intern The Center for International Policy (CIP) is a non-profit public policy research and advocacy think tank with offices in Washington, D.C. and New York City. It was founded in 1975 in response to the Vietnam War. The Center describes its mission as “promoting a U.S. foreign policy based on international cooperation, demilitarization and respect for human rights.” The Center is the parent organization for a variety of projects, including The Financial Transparency Coalition, Win Without War and Avoided Deforestation Partners. It also collaborates with the Washington Office on Latin America and the Latin America Working Group to publish the Just the Facts website. The Center for International Policy works to promote a U.S. foreign policy based on peace, international cooperation, demilitarization, and respect for basic human rights. Through research, education, and direct public advocacy, CIP works to define and put into practice a more sympathetic, farsighted, and non-militaristic approach to the developing world. The Development and Operations Internship is a unique internship offering non-profit fundraising, development, admin, and office management experience. The intern will work with CIP’s Senior Development Associate and Office Manager.

Cato Institute Salary: Paid Duration: Spring/Summer/Fall Location: Washington D.C. Job Title: Intern The Cato Institute is an American libertarian think tank headquartered in Washington, D.C. It was founded as the Charles Koch Foundation in 1974 by Ed Crane, Murray Rothbard, and Charles Koch, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of the conglomerate Koch Industries. In July 1976, the name was changed to the Cato Institute. Cato was established to have a focus on public advocacy, media exposure and societal influence In order to maintain its independence, the Cato Institute accepts no government funding. Cato receives approximately 80 percent of its funding through tax-deductible contributions from individuals, with the remainder of its support coming from foundations, corporations, and the sale of books and publications. Cato interns assist policy staff as researchers; work with the conference department to organize policy conferences, debates, and forums; attend seminars and conferences; and assist Cato’s professional staff by copying and filing newspaper articles, distributing materials to congressional offices, and preparing mailings. In addition to their research and other duties, interns take part in regular seminars on politics, economics, law, and philosophy, as well as a series of lectures and films on libertarian themes.

Job Title: Research Intern In 1985, a small group of visionary Americans committed to advancing U.S. interests in the Middle East founded The Washington Institute for Near East Policy. The founders understood that American interests in the region emanate from a handful of core ideas: security, peace, prosperity, democracy, and stability. But they also recognized that these interests can be best advanced through policies rooted in inquiry, debate, and research. The Washington Institute accesses the policy process from many angles: the written word, the spoken word, and personal contact. Manna Project International Salary: Unpaid Duration: Summer Location: Guatemala/Ecuador/Nicaraugua Job Title: Short-Term Volunteer The mission of Manna International is to foster communities of talented young leaders to become the next generation of social change agents by engaging in collaborative, on-the-ground service with international communities in need. MPI volunteers work in a number of different programs, operate programs in such a way as to relate to multiple facets of a given community, and work in concert with other MPI volunteers who may be focusing in other areas. Some of the main areas of focus include health, education, leadership development, and economic empowerment. The name Manna Project comes from the Biblical story of “manna.” The story goes that God provided “manna,” a bread-like substance, each day for the Israelites as they traveled through the desert. Only enough manna was provided for that specific day. While Manna Project is not a religious organization, it is a noble idea to have enough for the day at hand. The MPI Summer Intern Program gives volunteers experience working with a non-profit and serving an underprivileged population. The program integrates the volunteers into the daily functions of MPI Program Directors as they assist in planning classes and instructing lessons. Volunteers will get a snapshot of MPI´s longterm goals in action, seeing how their trip contributes to the greater pictures of community development.

Through its intern positions, training4changes offers opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students who are eager to gain knowledge and make a difference while they are still in college. Carl Albert Public Internship Salary: Unpaid Duration: Spring/Summer/Fall Location: Washington D.C. Job Title: Research Intern The Carl Albert Congressional Research and Studies Center is a unique and nonpartisan institution that strengthens representative democracy through scholarship, learning, and service. Established in 1979 by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and the Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma, the center is a living tribute to the ideals, leadership, and accomplishments of the Honorable Carl Albert, native Oklahoman, University of Oklahoma alumnus, Rhodes Scholar, 46th Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. Carl Albert Center (CAC) fellowships offer students the opportunity to conduct collaborative research in politics and government with faculty members. In addition to engaging in original research with a mentor professor, fellows meet as a group twice monthly with Professor Michael Crespin, Associate Director of the Carl Albert Center, and guest speakers to discuss different research traditions. The broad mission is to integrate students into the community of scholars. Students regularly take part in the various conferences and symposia sponsored by the Center. Many present their own research at professional scholarly meetings, and some have published their collaborative research in professional journals. This program is open to all University of Oklahoma undergraduate students, regardless of major.
