Welcome! The worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest early music festival is once again upon us. This year in Utrecht we will take two musical icons as our points of reference: Sweelinck and Bach. We also look forward to sharing with you the extraordinary musical riches that lie between them. Two seasoned guides will accompany us on our journey: Harry van der Kamp and Masaaki Suzuki. Yet there is much, much more on offer. How about a stage performance of the first Dutch opera, De Triomferende Min? Or colourful German Baroque cantatas? Just imagine keyboard recitals on a historical Ruckers virginal dating from 1604. Or a St Matthew Passion with RenĂŠ Jacobs, who makes his return appearance in Utrecht after 17 years. You are welcome to drop in at our inviting Pandhof Festival Centre on the Domplein, and to visit a unique exhibition at the Museum Catharijneconvent featuring the works of Gerrit, the artist brother of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. “Since my time spent studying as a student in Amsterdam with Ton Koopman and Piet Kee, I have loved the Netherlands, a country that boasts a fantastic Bach tradition. So it is an honour to be artist in residence at the Utrecht Early Music Festival, the world’s pre-eminent early music festival. In the story of Sweelinck to Bach I will naturally focus on the latter period, together with my Bach Collegium Japan, and in doing so I would like to show audiences that Bach did not exist in isolation. Zelenka, Kuhnau, Pachelbel and Johann Sebastian’s own family: they all made a significant contribution to the richness of the German Baroque. “Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck is the composer who has completely fascinated me: he was an unassuming man who, besides composing organ and harpsichord works, fused the late Rennaissance with the early Baroque in a masterly way with his pithy oeuvre of chansons, madrigals, rimes, Cantiones Sacrae and, last but not least, all 150 psalms. In the year of its 450th anniversary,this monument of Dutch music will play a major role in the Early Music Festival. In the space of three concerts I will present his richly varied music in an international context with my Gesualdo Consort Amsterdam. Sweelinck > Bach: a declaration of love

The period from Sweelinck’s birth to Bach’s death spans almost two whole centuries. Despite this it is possible to draw a virtually direct line between these two great figures, from teacher to student and down through the generations. Bach could not have become what he was without Sweelinck. While this is true, it is not the full story, so we would like to add to the picture during this year’s Early Music Festival. For not all roads lead to Bach. Just listen to Zelenka: the contrast is so great that you could imagine yourself half a century down the track, yet he is almost Bach’s exact contemporary. It is also enriching to include the musical tale of the Reformation: from the rich French psalm culture in household circles, to the Lutheran chorale in its surprising and varied forms. However this festival is no history lesson. Rather, it is a public declaration of love for a collection of unique repertoire. From the loveliest early psalm settings, taking in the sweetest 17th-century chamber music, to the most colourful German Baroque cantatas. This Festival is a vibrant kaleidoscope of popular and little known music, all of it first rate, so feel free to join us and listen in anywhere and at any time. Whether you are a connoisseur or encountering early music for the very first time, the quality of the repertoire is so convincing that it will whet your appetite for more. 6

2012 International STIMU Symposium Most of what we do is hypothetical: Gustav Leonhardt and his Early Music Gustav Leonhardt’s death in January 2012 has deprived the early music movement of one of its greatest advocates. The importance of Leonhardt’s role in championing unjustly neglected repertoire and performing it on historical instruments can scarcely be overestimated. From August 31 to September 2 2012 Stimu, the Dutch Foundation for Historical Performance Practice will present a symposium entitled Most of what we do is hypothetical: Gustav Leonhardt and his Early Music in collaboration with the Amsterdam Conservatoire. The musical and social context in which Leonhardt’s early work was carried out will be discussed, as well as the latest research into the music that he so much admired. The main scope will not be limited to the musically rich life of one individual, but will primarily focus on the directions a movement can choose to take, following the death of a person who has left an aesthetic mark of ongoing influence and enduring value. The symposium will be preceded by a screening of Chronik der Anna Magdalena Bach, the film by Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, which was premièred in Utrecht 45 years ago, with performances by Leonhardt (in the role of J.S. Bach), Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Bob van Asperen.

Pandhof Festival Centre This year the Pandhof on the Domplein is once again the perfect place to enjoy a drink and a snack between the Festival activities, to browse in the Festival CD shop or to swap opinions with your fellow visitors. Here you can also listen to carillon and fringe concerts every day. The Pandhof Festival Centre will be open every day from 10.oo a.m. until late in the evening.

Gerrit Pieterszoon Sweelinck in Museum Catharijneconvent During the exhibition The Word in the Golden Age in Museum Catharijneconvent a special place has been reserved for Gerrit Pieterszoon, the artist brother of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. You will be granted free admittance to the Museum Catherijneconvent during the Festival upon presentation of your concert ticket.

Organ day in Leiden From Sweelinck to Bach

In Leiden there are three organs dating from Sweelinck’s time within walking distance of each other, restored to their original condition in mean-tone (Pieterskerk), in 17th century style (Hooglandse Kerk) and in Baroque style (Marekerk). Reitze Smits will talk about each instrument and perform a short concert, illustrating the path linking Sweelinck to Bach: the ideal introduction to this year’s Festival theme.

Summer School: Carl Van Eyndhoven

Let the carillon sound

The carillonneur and researcher Carl Van Eyndhoven has immersed himself in the remarkable development of the carillon in 17th century Netherlands. While the sources are meagre, thanks to two â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;versteekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; books from Brussels containing arrangements for the automatic playing drum of the carillon, we can have some idea of the music played from the towers in this period: French-style ballets de cour, madrigals and motets. Van Eyndhoven discusses his research during a lecture preceding his carillon recital.

Carl van Eyndhoven & Capilla Flamenca Carillon playing from the Dom Tower and Capilla Flamenca singing in the Pandhof: this extraordinary concert displays the results of the research carried out by the carillonneur Carl Van Eyndhoven into the development of the carillon repertoire in 17th century Netherlands. A combination that is bound to produce a totally unique open air concert.

Bell ringing & church bell guided walks Throughout the city centre of Utrecht, members of the Utrecht Bell Ringers Guild will present a church bell concert, starting with the bells of the Dom Tower and gradually building up to reach imposing â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;full volume ringingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; with all 13 bells. Afterwards the other church bells in the city will be added to the concert until church bell music echoes across the entire city. At 12.15 p.m. two guided church bell walks will commence from the Domplein: a western and a southern route that follow the bell ringing relay on foot.

AVRO/NTR Festival bulletin On eight evenings from 25 August to 2 September inclusive, AVRO/Radio4 will broadcast a special Festival bulletin, in which the presenter Mark Brouwers will introduce his guests and their music to you on location. These daily, live impressions of the Festival will precede the Radio4 broadcast of the evening concert.

Scheidemann: organ works Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was evidently satisfied with the ‘pious Jonghmans Henderich Scheijtman, from Hamborg’, dedicating a canon to his student upon his departure from Amsterdam. Returning to his birthplace, Scheidemann unleashed a veritable explosion of creativity along with his colleagues Weckmann, Praetorius and Schop. Wolfgang Zerer, himself a teacher in Hamburg, knows this founder of the German organ school as none other.

Malgosia Fiebig

Scheidemann, Buxtehude, Walther on the carillon Organ music assumes a key role in this year’s Festival: after all, a direct line can be drawn linking Sweelinck and his northern-German organ students to Bach in Leipzig. Two important figures en route are Buxtehude and Scheidemann. Malgosia Fiebig’s carillon recital perfectly complements the preceding organ recital by Wolfgang Zerer. She plays on the light Baroque Hemony carillon of the Nicolaïkerk.

Trinity Baroque / Julian Podger The many facets of Sweelinck

Aside from his official duties as organist of the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam, Sweelinck composed works in many vocal genres. The singers of Trinity Baroque present a varied programme of psalms, Latin and French motets and secular genres in Italian and French. Organ toccatas, fantasias and the Balletto del granduca performed by the organist James Johnstone complete the spectrum.

Bach’s cello suites on the viola da spalla Until several years ago the viola da spalla was nothing more than a theoretical concept; however, thanks to the important reconstruction work of Sigiswald Kuijken and the instrument maker Dmitry Badiarov, the ‘shoulder violin’ now occupies a well-recognised position between the cello and violin. The young violin virtuoso Sergey Malov takes on the challenge, performing not just Bach’s cello suites nos. 1 and 6 but also the third violin partita on his new spalla.

Masaaki Suzuki & co

Bach: Musikalisches Opfer and other chamber music Masaaki Suzuki begins his Utrecht residency in intimate fashion with Bach’s chamber music for traverso and violin. His programme includes the trio sonata from the Musikalisches Opfer, based on the enigmatic theme provided by Frederick the Great himself. Even at an advanced age Bach proved to be totally au fait with the latest, elegant mode, while naturally including his personal trademark: mellifluous counterpoint.

Bach: Concertos on … the recorder There are recorder concertos in abundance, but not by Bach. Or maybe there are, after all... Starting from the idea that the recorder is a constant factor in Bach’s oeuvre, festival favourite Erik Bosgraaf appropriates several of Bach’s concertos. The result is refreshing: you will hear the oboe concerto BWV 1059 and the concerto for harpsichord BWV 1053 performed on the recorder! In this way there are always new aspects to discover in Bach’s timeless music.

Collegium 1704 / Václav Luks

Zelenka: Missa omnium sanctorum (1741) Experiencing Zelenka’s exciting, harmonically daring style, it is hard to believe that he and Bach were virtual contemporaries. Leipzig is separated from Catholic Dresden by a mere one hundred kilometres, yet the contrast between the two could scarcely be any greater. Collegium 1704, the Zelenka ensemble par excellence, will delight the audience with the Missa omnium sanctorum, Zelenka’s final mass.

Gesualdo Consort / Harry van der Kamp Sweelinck: Psalms and Cantiones sacrae

Harry van der Kamp and his Gesualdo Consort Amsterdam have won many awards for their Sweelinck Monument: the complete CD recording of his vocal music. So they are the ideal festival guests to showcase Sweelinck’s oeuvre in no less than three concerts. This evening they will do so in large-scale formation, performing several of his finest sixto eight-voice psalms and motets. While these may have been composed for prayer within the home, they represent domestic music-making in its most monumental form.

L’Armonia Sonora & Concerto Palatino Rosenmüller: motets with winds

Rosenmüller was on the brink of being appointed to the post of Thomascantor in Leipzig when his sudden arrest in 1655 put the brakes on his career. However the consequences were not so bad: he escaped from prison and left for Venice, where he immersed himself in the sumptuous style of San Marco. In an exclusive performance for Utrecht, Mieneke van der Velden & co present several phenomenal solo motets in a modern world première.

Bach, Weiss, Kellner: lute music In the early 18th century the role of the lute in Germany was undergoing a serious decline. A mere handful of virtuosi continued to uphold the honour of the instrument, including David Kellner in Hamburg, whose surprisingly short manual even appeared in the Netherlands. Silvius Weiss enjoyed even greater renown: his extensive lute oeuvre is on a par with that of Bach. José Miguel Moreno has built a new instrument specially for this programme.

Masaaki Suzuki in conversation with Lex Bohlmeijer As artist in residence, in addition to giving three concerts during this Festival, Masaaki Suzuki will also take a seat for an in-depth interview. Lex Bohlmeijer will question him about his work with Bach Collegium Japan, his penchant for Johann Sebastian Bach and how he came to speak such excellent Dutch. An extensive brunch buffet awaits you.

Malgosia Fiebig

Böhm & Telemann on the carillon Georg Böhm, a figure of considerable influence for the young Bach, wrote much chamber music. Malgosia Fiebig reveals her own arrangements of two of his keyboard suites and an overture. From Telemann, Bach’s rival for the post of Cantor at the Thomaskirche, we will hear two recorder sonatas. Incidentally, during this concert you can take a close-up look at the carillon. Fifteen daredevils will be admitted at 12.00 p.m. to make the seventy-meter ascent.

Bach: Sonatas for gamba and harpsichord In the hands of the Israeli Nima Ben David the viola da gamba seems like the world’s easiest instrument to play. She throws herself into the sonatas that Bach wrote for her instrument with contagious delight. But did Bach actually have the viola da gamba specifically in mind? No one knows, however it is certain that Bach liked to reuse his own music. Several chamber music pieces arranged for keyboard give clear proof of this.

Armonico Tributo / Lorenz Duftschmid L’echo du Danube: Schenck’s gamba music

Schenck’s two sparkling suites L’echo du Danube and Le nymphe di Reno are among his best works, which instantly places them at the pinnacle of the gamba repertoire. During his travels as a diplomat, the Amsterdammer picked up all kinds of influences, so his oeuvre is a reflection of musical Europe. Lorenz Duftschmid leads Armonico Tributo Austria, playing on his original Stainer gamba dating from 1674.

Les Plaisirs du Parnasse / David Plantier Westhoff en Walther: two violin virtuosi

In 1674 Johann Jakob Walther and Johann Paul von Westhoff took up appointments at the Dresden Hofkapelle. Together with Biber they were considered to be the leading violinists of their day, each with his particular idiosyncrasies, such as Walther’s predilection for imitating other instruments and animals. The violinist David Plantier has a thorough knowledge of both composers’ music after years of intensive study and two pioneering recordings.

Rare Fruits Council / Manfredo Kraemer Travels from Biber to Buxtehude

Tracing his (distant) musical predecessors, the star violinist Manfredo Kraemer makes the journey from the Alps to the Baltic Sea and back, with stopovers in Salzburg for Biber and Nuremberg for Pachelbel, then on to Saxony for Rosenmüller and finally to Reincken’s Hamburg and Buxtehude’s Lübeck. Their marvellously virtuosic violin repertoire, rooted in the stylus fantasticus, is in the most capable hands with The Rare Fruits Council.

Brisk & Johan Linderoth Senfl, Isaac: tenor songs

Heinrich Isaac and his student Ludwig Senfl enjoyed a close friendship, which began at the court of Emperor Maximilian in Innsbruck. Together they brought the tenor song to great heights, a genre in which a popular melody or chorale melody forms the basis for a refined filigree of voices. The recorder ensemble Brisk places these melodies, at times sweet, at times audacious, in the hands of the Swedish tenor Johan Linderoth.

La Chapelle Rhénane / Benoît Haller Schütz: Psalmen Davids (selection)

With his Psalmen Davids (1619), Heinrich Schütz summarised everything that he had learned, especially during the four years he spent in Venice under Giovanni Gabrieli’s wing. The colourful multi-choral psalms marked the beginning of his career in Dresden and unleashed a musical revolution there. The Strasbourg based group La Chapelle Rhénane emphasises the at times raw expression of the Old Testament texts.

La Divina Armonia / Lorenzo Ghielmi

Cantates of Buxtehude, Bruhns, Böhm and Bach La Divina Armonia is one of the most profoundly expressive Baroque ensembles currently on the scene. Its leader Lorenzo Ghielmi has programmed the finest Baroque cantatas for soloists and a compact instrumental group. An Italian by birth, Ghielmi is a leading Bach authority and a seasoned specialist in northern German Baroque expressivity.

Holland Baroque Society / Andreas Arend Buns: motets and sonatas

Just recently, Tineke Steenbrink of the Holland Baroque Society stumbled upon a pile of unique documents in Boxmeer: first editions complete with annotations by the Dutch Carmelite monk-organist Benedictus Buns. Armed with new knowledge Holland Baroque Society presents a melange of his highly expressive and challenging usic, which was known throughout Europe around 1700 but has since fallen into neglect.

Telemann, Bach, Gosfield: violin solos She is young and unassuming, yet also fiercely ambitious: the Icelander Elfa Rún Kristinsdóttir believes in transcending all limits. As the leader of the Berlin Soloist Ensemble Kaleidoskop, but also as a soloist, she challenges audiences with a feisty combination of old and new music. In her Utrecht performance a touch of Annie Gosfield, New York City’s leading avant-garde composer, will be heard alongside Telemann and Bach.

Summer School: Lionel Meunier & Vox Luminis Luther and the chorale

The young singers of Vox Luminis specialise in music from across the whole of Europe, from Renaissance to Baroque, however, they are particularly devoted to the German chorale and to all its subsequent forms. The group’s artistic director Lionel Meunier talks about his discoveries in this lecture-performance, with the assistance of several of his singers.

Schein, Praetorius Telemann on the carillon The term ‘Tafelmusik’ was first used in 16th century Germany to describe a phenomenon dating from the Middle Ages. Church music was for God, chamber music was for the musicians, but tafelmusik was played for members of the court: so actually we are talking about the first official concert genre. The term was often attached to suites during the Baroque era, such as those featured in this programme by Schein (from Banchetto musicale), Michael Praetorius and Telemann.

Lorenzo Ghielmi & Vera Milani Bach en Böhm: student and master

The celebrated Italian organist Lorenzo Ghielmi places religious songs from Böhm’s oeuvre and Bach’s Schemelli-Gesangbuch alongside several organ solos, including Prelude and Fugue in C BWV 531. The result is a sparkling programme for organ and soprano in which student and master stand side by side in brotherly fashion.

Johann Sebastian Bach’s status in the twentieth century as a much-loved composer is borne out by the many interpretations of his work for automatically playing musical instruments. Besides barrel organ books Museum Speelklok possesses rolls for automatic pianos with Bach’s music, often played by renowned pianists such as Edwin Fischer. This music will be played during a special guided tour that will take place on every Festival day at 1.30 p.m.

Les Idées Heureuses / Geneviève Soly Graupner: chamber music

Following Kuhnau’s death, various candidates were considered for the post of new Thomascantor in Leipzig. Telemann did not want the position, Graupner was unavailable, so in the end the choice fell upon Johann Sebastian Bach. Nowadays Bach overshadows all of his contemporaries; an unjustifiable fact according to the harpsichordist Geneviève Soly. She has dedicated her career to candidate number two, Graupner, who produced a gigantic but largely unknown oeuvre in Darmstadt.

L’École de Royaumont / Wim Becu & Lambert Colson

Luther and the church music of Knöfel, Schütz, Schop, etc Protestantism caused immense upheaval in the sixteenth century, also in a musical sense. Nevertheless, Gregorian chant continued to play a decisive role after the Reformation, as eleven young professionals were to discover at an in-depth workshop at Fondation Royaumont. The supreme revelations to emerge from this project were the anonymous Missa super Aus tiefer Noth and motets by Johann Knöfel, works which are only to be found in the Royaumont music library.

Keiser: Brockes Passion Reinhard Keiser’s Brockes Passion is exactly 300 years old and a virtually forgotten work. The expressive and dramatic libretto of Brockes was a windfall for Keiser, who celebrated triumph after triumph at the Hamburg Opera, and later it was also to inspire Händel and Telemann. The Belgian ensembles Les Muffatti and Vox Luminis enter fully into this personal, richly orchestrated Passion story packed with surprises.

The musical banquet served up by Skip Sempé in Utrecht is lavish fare with suites of the early Baroque, delightfully performed by Capriccio Stravagante’s virtuosic strings and winds. He has selected the most sensual dance music from across 17th century Europe, including Carlo Farina’s work from which he took the name of his ensemble. You will relish hearing this music for lords!

Stylus Phantasticus & Damien Guillon / Friederike Heumann Tunder, Buxtehude, Erlebach: solo motets

The German cities constantly vied to surpass each other in (cultural) riches, and trade provided the necessary capital. Each composer on this programme featuring the celebrated countertenor Damien Guillon is linked to trade: Tunder and Buxtehude worked in Lübeck, the capital of the Hanseatic League, Erlebach studied near Bremen and Schenck was born in Amsterdam, a major rival of the German cities.

Dorothee Mields & Lee Santana German lute songs

The icon of this midnight concert is Heinrich Albert, a nephew of Schütz. His Arien oder Melodien dating from the mid 17th century form one of the largest collections of sacred and secular songs in German, with texts for every occasion, whether joyful or sorrowful. Albert’s music is interspersed with intimate works by Franck, Krieger, Strungk, Nauwach and the great Schütz himself, who was Albert’s teacher.

Summer School: Harry van der Kamp The Orpheus of Amsterdam

Carillon fringe

Becoming a carillonneur is quite an undertaking. Before students can play the bells they learn the art of playing the carillon at one of the two great carillon schools of the Netherlands and Flanders. Philippe Beullens currently studies in Mechelen and begins his fringe concert with Dutch music: Van Eyck, Fesch and Van den Gheyn, followed by a stylistic tour of Europe with Purcell, Frescobaldi, Händel and Fischer.

Buxtehude: keyboard music Dieterich Buxtehude wrote keyboard music in all the important genres of his time, sometimes for organ (in particular, the works described as ‘pedaliter’, ‘with pedal’), but very often without a specific instrument in mind. Luca Guglielmi, the harpsichordist from Turin, has chosen several fine preludes, toccatas, arias and pieces taken from the seven mysterious suites ‘über die Natur und Eigenschaften der Planeten’.

Böhm, Bach, Telemann: motets Father Bach ‘studied the work of the Lüneburg organist Georg Böhm with great devotion’, according to his son Carl Philipp Emanuel. Peter Kooij is known for his solo appearances with Philippe Herreweghe, Masaaki Suzuki and many others, as well as being the driving force behind various ensembles. Here he explores the parallels between the two composers. De Profundis performs as a trio of instrumentalists with the mezzo-soprano Margot Oitzinger as special guest.

Ludus Modalis / Bruno Boterf

Psalms and sacred songs of the French Renaissance The superb translation of the Psalms by Clément Marot and Théodore de Bèze provided material for many generations of composers, including Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. Claude Lejeune was among the first to set French psalms to music. The eight singers of the French ensemble Ludus Modalis sing Lejeune’s psalms alongside harmonically daring sacred songs by Guillaume Costeley and Pascal de l’Estocart.

Camerata Trajectina

Hacquart: De Triomferende Min [Triumphant Love] (1678) During the misery following 1672, the Dutch Year of Disaster, Cupid and Venus forced the god of war Mars to his knees. To celebrate this Peace Treaty of Nijmegen Carolus Hacquart composed the lyrical drama De Triomferende Min, also referred to as the first Dutch opera. Camerata Trajectina interweaves fantasy and reality to create a riveting opera performance replete with Dutch music. This performance will be repeated on Wednesday August 29.

Their astonishing performance of Schein’s Israelis Brünnlein in the 2011/2012 Oude Muziek season puts their status beyond dispute: Gli Angeli Genève ranks alongside singers such as Dorothee Mields, Hana Blazíková, Alex Potter and Stephan MacLeod as a leading light of the Baroque scene. Their festival programme is based on two of the finest Lutheran chorales: ‘Mit Fried und Freud’ and ‘Jesu, meine Freude’, heard in many different versions.

Lautten Compagney & Capella Angelica / Wolfgang Katschner Buxtehude: Membra Jesu nostri

Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu nostri is one of the most hauntingly beautiful vocal works produced in the 17th century. The Lautten Compagney Berlin performs this seven-part meditation on Christ’s suffering body with ten singers and a rich continuo. This evening concert promises to be one of the most intense and profoundly moving experiences of the entire Festival.

Maude Gratton

Weckmann: keyboard music The master of the keyboard Matthias Weckmann owned an extensive collection of manuscripts. From these we can gain a fairly precise idea of the composers that he held in especially high regard. The collection includes foreigners such as Carissimi and Chambonnières, ‘Germans’ such as Schütz and Sweelinck, and a number of works by his friend Johann Jacob Froberger. Maude Gratton brings the stylistic riches of Weckmann’s oeuvre to life on the harpsichord and the historical Ruckers virginal (1604).

Summer School: Sigiswald Kuijken Life with Bach

Violinist, gambist, conductor, teacher… Sigiswald Kuijken lives for music, as is evident from his countless, legendary concerts and recordings. He will make two Festival appearances with his own group La Petite Bande. Currently Kuijken is working on a book about Bach, the composer who is the central point of reference in his career. In this personal lecture he will tell his story.

Sweelinck’s models: Philips, Byrd The high point of this recital on the Dom carillon is Malgosia Fiebig’s own arrangement of William Byrd’s keyboard suite based on the theme of war. All the stages of battle are depicted: the march preceding the battle, the fighting itself, the burial of the fallen and a jubilant victory dance. She completes the programme with a galliarde by Peter Philips from the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book and a partita by Johann Kuhnau.

Siebe Henstra

Sweelinck, Philips: keyboard music The English influence in Sweelinck’s keyboard works is clearly evident: it came from southern Netherlands, where Peter Philips and kindred spirits kept up the polyphonic tradition of William Byrd. Siebe Henstra reveals both facets of Sweelinck’s keyboard music on the harpsichord and the historical Ruckers virginal (1604).

Philips, Byrd, Dering: gamba consorts Around 1600 Brussel was a safe haven for English Catholics who fled to the continent to escape religious persecution. Among them was Peter Philips, who became acquainted with Sweelinck in Amsterdam. The five highly acclaimed gambists of Phantasm play consort music from brand-new editions of Philips and Dering, another Catholic in exile.

Masaaki Suzuki devotes the high point of his Utrecht residency to a single, short text. The Magnificat is Mary’s prayer of thanksgiving, a promise of justice and a source of inspiration for composers. This evening you will hear the versions by Johann Kuhnau and Johann Sebastian Bach, two successive cantors of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, interspersed with two short versions composed by Zelenka for Catholic Dresden.

Trauer und Tod: Weckmann, Selle, Ahle, Schütz With such a wealth of musical splendour on display, one could almost forget that the German Baroque was marked by the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648), not to mention a devastating plague epidemic. Simen Van Mechelen reveals this dark side with a TrauerSinfonia for four muted trombones. Stately intradas, pavanes and sonatas alternate with plaintive motets, two of which will be sung by the special guest: the soprano Johannette Zomer.

Lord Danby’s Lute Book: Hamburg domestic music This music is ideally suited to a midnight rendition: a selection from Lord Danby’s Lute Book, a compilation of lute arrangements by Händel, De Visée, Lully and other music that set the tone in the Hanseatic city of Hamburg around 1700. There is also a link with the Netherlands: Lord Danby, son of a diplomat and a superb virtuoso on his instrument, had this compilation and an extremely valuable lute in his possession during the several years he spent in Utrecht.

Summer School: Ruud Priem Gerrit, the other Sweelinck

Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck had a younger brother who was a painter. In the exhibition The Word in the Golden Age a special place has been reserved for this Gerrit Pieterszoon, including his imposing Triptych with Crucifixion, in which he is supposed to have depicted his musical brother. Ruud Priem is artistic director of Museum Catharijneconvent and gives a commentary on the other Sweelinck from an art-historical perspective.

Sweelinck en Bach on the carillon Sweelinck and Bach may well be the luminaries inspiring this year’s Festival; however, each had their own models and sources of inspiration. The improvisatory style of Frescobaldi’s canzonas influenced virtually all subsequent keyboard composers, including Sweelinck. And Bach would not have been what he was without the groundwork laid by Johann Gottfried Walther and his chorale variations. All four composers will be featured in this carillon recital.

Fortune my foe: Sweelinck’s keyboard world Sweelinck carefully supervised the publication of his vocal music; however, it was above all thanks to his students that his keyboard music became widely known. Alina Rotaru attracted much attention with a highly acclaimed Sweelinck recording and makes her Utrecht debut today. Her harpsichord programme features several song variations, the monumental Fantasia chromatica and a Fantazia by John Bull.

Daedalus / Roberto Festa Lejeune: chansons

Claude Lejeune is one of the main composers who gave musical form to French Protestantism. His psalm settings were also especially popular in northern Netherlands. The international vocal ensemble Daedalus focuses here on Lejeune’s secular work, performing elegant French chansons which combine heartrending texts with light-hearted tunes such as ‘Revecy venir du Printemps’.

Masaaki Suzuki concludes his Utrecht residency by exploring Bach’s sources of inspiration. For instance we hear motets for double choir by Johann Kuhnau, Bach’s immediate predecessor at the Thomaskirche, and music by Johann Pachelbel, who was a close friend of Bach’s father Ambrosius. From the Bach family tree we encounter Johann Christoph and Johann Michael, both represented by a colourful motet.

Motets celebrating death: Scheidt, Schein, Weckmann, Sweelinck In the Baroque era, death was not something to be feared by the faithful. Quite the contrary; after all, one’s final breath on earth signified – God being merciful – one’s first breath in heaven. La Petite Bande presents music that upholds the hope of a better life. In this context Sigiswald Kuijken draws on Sweelinck’s Cantiones sacrae and Schütz’s Musikalische Exequien, among other works.

Menno van Delft takes advantage of the midnight hour to give a recital on the most intimate of all keyboard instruments: the clavichord. Böhm’s refined music, tautly conceived but always inventive in design, radiates a completely new lustre on this instrument that is capable of subtle nuances. Carillon fringe

The Korean Jungeun Kim, a student at the Dutch carillon school in Amersfoort, will perform in the second carillon fringe concert. She will combine works of the two theme composers with a Vivaldi-esque harpsichord sonata by the 16th century composer Sybrandus van Noordt. Several generations after Sweelinck, Sybrandus held the post of organist of the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam.

Students eagerly flocked to take lessons in Amsterdam and put their new organ expertise into practice upon returning to their homeland. In today’s programme Léon Berben focuses solely on Sweelinck: we will hear a cross-section of the organ oeuvre, including the Fantasias SwWV 261 and 270 and two chorale fantasies, performed on the 16th century pipework of the De Swart-Bätz organ in the Domkerk.

Giovanni Rosenmüller: a German in Venice Johann Rosenmüller was an heir to the revolution unleashed by Schütz in Germany after his trip to Italy. Once Rosenmüller himself was working in Venice, the German adapted effortlessly to his environment. Together with the violinists Veronika Skuplik and Bjarte Eike, Chelycus has invited the young countertenor Alex Potter to perform a selection from the unique Italian solo repertoire of Legrenzi and Strozzi, in their turn Monteverdi’s heirs.

Gesualdo Consort / Harry van der Kamp Sweelinck in Holland: Schuyt, Tollius, Padbrué, Schoonhovius, Verdonck

Sweelinck did not compose his vocal works for the church – the Calvinists were vigilantly on guard against the use of overly complex music during the service. His psalms, just like his madrigals, chansons and rimes, were intended to be sung with friends around the table. Gesualdo Consort Amsterdam lets us hear the kind of music that was enjoyed in Dutch sitting-rooms. As always, Harry van der Kamp comes up with some exquisite finds in this context.

Le Concert Français / Pierre Hantaï Bach: orchestral suites nos. 1, 2 and 3

Pierre Hantaï is a celebrated guest at the Utrecht Festival; however it is not yet general knowledge that the harpsichordist also leads a first-rate orchestra, besides enjoying a solo career. Today this will become evident, with a performance of three of Bach’ orchestral suites, also referred to as overtures on account of their imposing opening movements. This is pure light music, in the best sense of the word.

Motets by Weckmann, Ebart and J.C. Bach Frequently referred to as the best gambist of his generation, Philippe Pierlot has an unerring instinct for quality, reflected in today’s concert. Together with the tenor Hans-Jörg Mammel and the bass Stephan MacLeod he revives sonatas of David Pohle and motets of Matthias Weckmann, two students of Heinrich Schütz. The high point is the lament ‘Ach, dass ich Wassers g’nug hätte’ by Johann Christoph Bach, sung by the countertenor Carlos Mena.

Vox Luminis / Lionel Meunier Schütz: Musikalische Exequien

Caught up in the Thirty Years’ War, many Lutherans felt as if the end of time was drawing oppressively near. Like many of his wealthy contemporaries, Prince Heinrich von Reuss decided to prepare for his funeral down to the last detail. He had Schütz compose music to Biblical texts that still grace his coffin: the Musikalische Exequien. The youthful Vox Luminis, the ideal vocal ensemble for this repertoire, supplements the ‘Begrabnis-Missa’ with magnificent funeral motets.

Buxtehude and Sweelinck: organ works In Lübeck Dieterich Buxtehude had a unique organ at his disposal, with no less than fifteen registers in the pedal. Such a wealth of colours naturally invited experimentation and this can be heard in his compositions. At midnight Ton Koopman pull s outall the stops for a full measure of virtuosic stylus fantasticus: unrestrained instrumental freedom as the ultimate expression of the Baroque.

Sweelinck, Scheidemann, Böhm, Bruhns, Bach Last year Arie Abbenes stepped down as city carillonneur of Utrecht, however occasionally he is overtaken by a nostalgic longing for the Dom Tower. So he just could not miss out on the Utrecht Early Music Festival and returns with music ranging from Sweelinck to Bach, including an arrangement of Bach’s Violin Partita BWV 1004. You can also take a look over his shoulder as he plays 70 meters above the ground. Fifteen daredevils will be admitted at 12.00 p.m. to ascend the tower.

Summer School: Johan Hofmann Ruckers’ transposing harpsichord

The harpsichord teacher and soloist Johan Hofmann possesses a unique instrument: a copy of a so-called transposing harpsichord. This instrument has two manuals that are tuned a fourth apart from each other. Probably Sweelinck purchased a similar Ruckers instrument in Antwerp for use in Amsterdam. It’s time for both a demonstration and an explanation.

Children’s workshop and performance 4+ Beppe is a sound inventor. He conjures up music out of everything that he comes across. And not just any music! The musicians of the Eolian Ensemble initially look down their noses at this oddity but end up enthusiastically blowing along with him on their instruments. The result is a refreshing family performance with music by Sweelinck, Bach, Pachelbel, Ligeti and Hindemith, with the actor Beppe Costa in the leading role.

Bach: trio sonatas and other organ works Already by 1717 Bach’s keyboard skills were so extraordinary that, according to an anecdote, the Frenchman Louis Marchand, himself a renowned virtuoso, lost his nerve and fled town when he was invited to take on Bach in a musical duel. The youthful Frenchman Benjamin Alard plays several classics such as the organ chorale ‘Aus der Tiefe’ on the Marcussen organ in the Nicolaïkerk. The plat de résistance consists of three of the celebrated, fiendishly difficult trio sonatas: the high point of Bach’s organ oeuvre.

Whether it is due to Strasbourg’s strategic location in the border zone is unclear; however, the fact is that Martin Gester and Le Parlement de Musique have mastered the German style to perfection. For their visit to Utrecht they have invited along the soprano Eugénie Warnier, one of the artists in residence at the 2010 Louis Quatorze Festival. She will perform several passionate solo motets by the Riga-based composer Meder, the Bohemian Capricornus and Dieterich Buxtehude.

The case against Jesus: Schütz’s St Matthew Passion Compagnie Bischoff transforms Schütz’s extremely austere St Matthew Passion into a dramatic spectacle in which the account of Jesus’s condemnation and execution plays a central role. The sound artist Wouter Snoei provides an acoustic commentary on Schütz’s music and the staging by Jan Van den Bossche. Five singers disclose the story line to the audience, as the drama unfolds in the form of a court case.

Natural trumpet presentation workshop / Susan Williams Bach called for trumpets in his suites, cantatas, oratorios and, naturally, in the Mass in B minor. A festive atmosphere is most common; however, the instrument also adds extra lustre to more subdued works. In this fringe concert Susan Williams presents the results of her natural trumpet workshop which deals with the entire spectrum.

Ricercar Consort / Philippe Pierlot Buxtehude, Weckmann, Erlebach: chamber music

On Friday the gambist Philippe Pierlot championed the vocal music of Matthias Weckmann. Today we hear a toccata by the Hamburg organist, in the context of a superb chamber music programme also featuring sonatas from Buxtehude’s opus 1 and a Chaconne by the East Frisian composer Erlebach. Pierlot is joined by Sophie Gent on the violin and Maude Gratton on the harpsichord.

French chansons from Dutch sources ‘Jean-Pierre Swelingh’ may not have spoken French on an everyday basis; nevertheless, his splendid settings of French poetry are proof of his effortless handling of the language. The evergreen Ensemble Clément Janequin places Sweelinck’s French language gems alongside the most compelling chansons by Lejeune, Crecquillon and Jacob Clement, selected from the compilations of the Flemish publishers Phalèse, Susato and Bellere and the Zeghere van Male manuscript from Bruges.

Opera in the church, how scandalous! Bach’s music may well enjoy an unassailable position today; however, his contemporaries were sometimes far from ready for the extremely lyrical tendency of the extended da capo arias or the vehement choruses. The operatic conductor and living legend René Jacobs is fully attuned to this expressivity. The works of Sweelinck and Bach span 150 years of music. While the former stood with one foot still in the Renaissance, the Thomascantor represents the musical pinnacle of the Baroque. The organ is the key link: without Sweelinck no Bach! The musicians of BL!NDMAN recreate the monumental Passacaglia and Fugue BWV 582 with their four saxophones, with the aid of electronics to provide just that little bit extra: a digital 32-foot register.

Two cantatas (BWV 10 and 21) and one of the Missae breves (BWV 236) will be tackled during a five-hour session under the direction of Erik Van Nevel. Summer School: Kathryn Cok Basso continuo in the Netherlands

Between 1600 and 1800 countless manuals appeared in the Netherlands on how to play basso continuo on the harpsichord, fortepiano or organ. The researcher and musician Kathryn Cok obtained her doctorate on this theme in 2011. In a lecture-performance, part of the Leonhardt symposium, she will explain how it came about that authors in the Netherlands were exceptionally well informed with regard to international trends.

Children’s guided tour 5+ This Sunday morning children are welcome to explore the Dom Tower and the 17th century carillon made by the Hemony brothers. In the Egmond Chapel on the first floor they can listen to the city carillonneur Malgosia Fiebig playing on the children’s carillon, after which they will continue the ascent to a height of 70 metres, where they can hear the real carillon at close range. Earplugs are recommended!

Malgosia Fiebig Pure Bach

For the conclusion of the Early Music Carillon Festival today, Malgosia Fiebig will only play Bach, who many music buffs view as being the Alpha and the Omega of music, after all. The programme features his French Suite no. 2 in C minor and the harpsichord concertos BWV 1056 and 1053.

Bach and his masters: organ works From a very young age Johann Sebastian Bach showed extreme ambition, which was not so unusual for a boy genius brimming with ideas. His walking pilgrimage to visit Buxtehude is a well-known example of Bach’s great eagerness to learn, however, the less renowned Böhm and Bruhns also left their mark on him. The master organist Bernard Foccroulle sketches a quadriptych, including the Fantasia and Fugue in G minor BWV 542 and three chorales from the Klavier-Übung III.

Die allerbeste Zeit: Bernhard, Schütz, Schein, Bach The subtly dissonant opening of Bach’s ‘Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit’ is almost unsurpassed in its beauty. Recorders were used for special occasions, not only here in Bach’s case, but also by Schütz and his contemporaries. The flautist Patrick Denecker has put together a refined programme of motets, cantatas and suites in which his own instrument plays a well-deserved leading role.

Les Folies Françoises put their harpsichordist Béatrice Martin fully in the spotlight with a programme that promises to be an absolute feast of familiar works. You will hear her performing solo in an English Suite, appearing as soloist in the well-known harpsichord concerto in D minor and also featured prominently in the festive Brandenburg Concerto no. 5, with its highly virtuosic harpsichord cadenza.

The Royal Wind Music is a unique consort boasting an entire range of tiny to jumbo-sized Renaissance recorders. The 13 players have previously appeared in Utrecht, then under the direction of Paul Leenhouts. The students and former students of the Amsterdam Conservatoire perform today without conductor, offering a mixture of polyphonic psalms, songs and dance suites by Scheidemann, Scheidt, Sweelinck, Van Noordt and their contemporaries.

Gesualdo Consort / Harry van der Kamp Sweelinck and the students of Gabrieli

Sweelinck’s Rimes françoises et italiennes (1612) include arrangements of five madrigals from Italy. It is not known whether he had first-hand knowledge of these pieces or had only come across them in print, however the influence of Andrea Gabrieli, Luca Marenzio and their circle is unmistakable. This third concert given by Gesualdo Consort Amsterdam explores the influence of the Italian Renaissance madrigal on the northerners Schütz, Grabbe, Pederson, Nielsen and naturally Sweelinck himself.

Collegium Vocale / Philippe Herreweghe Bach & Buxtehude: Mit Fried und Freud

Together with his Collegium Vocale Gent Philippe Herreweghe concludes the 31st Utrecht Early Music Festival in style with Bach’s festive Mass in G major. Also on the programme: the cantatas ‘Schauet doch und sehet’ BWV 46 and ‘Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin’ BWV 125, supplemented by Buxtehude’s cantata based on the same text. Featuring a soloist line-up of top stars this will be a closing concert for listeners to relish. The journey has come to an end.
