Introduction
UTRECHT EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL 2022
With the apparently frivolous festival theme Galanterie we explore the refinement of eighteenth-century Rococo. This originated in France and spread throughout Europe with its new sense of life: light and free. Sanssouci’s Frederician Rococo attracts our attention with its exuberance, refinement and extravagant, naturalistic elements. Indeed, the Berlin School and Frederick the Great’s interest in the Enlightenment will form a lens through which we will consider the theme. Seen in a musical context, the complicated interplay of musical styles such as Rococo, Empfindsamkeit, Sturm und Drang and Early Romanticism is fascinating. This is an exceptionally exciting era in which tradition and innovation jostle each other. However, the concept of galant is much older. It takes us back to the medieval amour courtois and the ideal courtier from the Renaissance. This invites a broad programming in which, together with co-curator Rosi Braidotti, we explore aspects such as social codes and good manners, from a cultural-historical perspective, past and present. So this festival, as always, dives into the past to see ourselves and each other in the mirror and – who knows – to understand both a little better.

Galanterie
GALANTERIE IN A CRACKLING AGE At the beginning of the eighteenth century, the oxblood red, burnt ochre and intense ultramarine of the Baroque dissolved into light pastel shades: powder pink, mint green and baby blue. Theatricality and grandiose gestures became a thing of the past. The age of man had arrived: his ingenuity would dominate the world, his feelings would be the measure of all things. The Age of Enlightenment became one of the most whirlwind episodes in the history of art, with Rococo at its zenith: a decorative, light and graceful style in architecture, painting, decorative arts, literature, theatre and music that spread from France, the frame of reference for le bon goût, throughout Europe. King Frederick the Great of Prussia was ‘infected’ and with his summer residence Sanssouci in Potsdam built the ultimate realisation of his refined Frederician Rococo. Ultra-refined or frivolous? Comfortable or coquettish? Delicate or hyper-sensitive? Galanterie or pedantry? We immerse ourselves in gold leaf and rocaille and find out on your behalf!

URGE FOR INNOVATION MUSIC FOR A NEW ERA In the eighteenth century the ornamentation and sensuality of the Rococo inspired numerous composers, whose unashamed aim was to create feeling and pleasure. Old and new blended together in various stylistic variants. The French and Italian styles were married in les goûts réunis, which became lighter and airier, using even pastoral musettes and hurdy-gurdies. Bach senior was still writing erudite polyphony, but also ventured into the area where his sons operated. Telemann gave the French galant style and the Italian Rococo a German twist, in Mannheim guidelines were being set for the Viennese Classics, and the Sturm und Drang seemed to want to step straight into Romanticism. But first the Empfindsame Stil flourishes with its capricious melodies, daring harmonies and clashing emotions. It is the territory of the brilliant Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, who is part of the Frederician Rococo.

FREDERICK THE GREAT AND THE BERLIN SCHOOL You can safely describe Frederick the Great as a Francophile. The king preferred his interiors, architecture, philosophy and literature to be as French as possible. But for his music he required something different. At his court the galant style was given a unique interpretation with a splash of German Late Baroque. Essential to the development of the Berlin style was also Frederick’s admiration for August of Saxony, who had built up a magnificent music chapel in Dresden. Composers of the calibre of Pisendel, Hasse, Zelenka and Quantz worked there with superstars like Senesino and Faustina Bordoni. After August’s death many of these musicians entered Frederick’s service, including Quantz, the emperor of the traverso, who managed to train the Prussian prince to become a creditable musician. Frederick regularly performed together with members of his court chapel, including Graun, C.P.E. Bach, Benda and Fasch. In addition to the repertoire that they composed for the daily chamber music concerts, our festival programme also features works bearing the royal signature.

FATHER AND SONS THE BACH FAMILY IN POTSDAM If your father’s name is Johann Sebastian Bach, two paths are open to you as a son: a life far away from music or a path that leads along deep footsteps and long shadows. Each of Bach’s sons paved himself a path towards the light. Carl Philipp Emanuel, alias C.P.E., was the brilliant innovator who founded the Empfindsame Stil. His dream job was as music director in Hamburg, but we also focus on the beginning of his career, when he was in the service of Frederick the Great in Potsdam. Johann Sebastian and Wilhelm Friedemann also appear in the spotlight. On their visit to Potsdam in 1747, Bach senior received the theme for his Musikalisches Opfer – his most galant work – on a silver platter. And Wilhelm Friedemann’s contribution was some fierce Sturm und Drang that leaves behind the boundaries of the usual in favour of a world of extremes.

MARC MAUILLON ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Distinguished, generous and galant, Marc Mauillon is the kind of musician who really warms the heart. Even more strengths: tons of bravura and enthusiasm, an infallible stylistic compass and a voice that can tackle both tenor and baritone parts. In terms of repertoire, he is one of the most versatile singers of his generation. Mauillon loves to sing medieval love songs as much as Renaissance repertoire, Baroque music or the delicate filigree work of the Rococo. Three times Mauillon issues an invitation to a latenight concert focussing on Michel Lambert’s Leçons de ténèbres. With his own hands he pulled this exuberantly ornamented repertoire out from under the dust. He also invites his sister Angélique and colleague Pierre Hamon to join him for a set of troubadour songs. He is a jury member for the International Van Wassenaer Competition and will be one of the musical guests of co-curator Rosi Braidotti during her salons.

NETHERLANDS BACH SOCIETY ARTIST IN RESIDENCE A residency during the world’s largest early music festival: a fitting gift for a centenarian, don’t you think? The pride of the Dutch musical world, the Netherlands Bach Society, is celebrating its 100th birthday, which most definitely deserves a place of honour on the festival line-up. Certainly this year, because the Bach specialism of this Utrecht company fits perfectly with an edition in which Bach senior and his sons play a central role. C.P.E.’s Magnificat starts the festival off with a bang. The ensemble also presents the Pasticcio Passion Wer ist der, so von Edom kömmt: a splendid work based around Graun’s Ein Lämmlein geht und trägt die Schuld, which also includes works by Johann Sebastian Bach and Telemann. That the musicians are also very accomplished soloists can be experienced in a series of intimate salon concerts with passionate music and personal commentaries for a very limited audience. We round off the residency with the lecture series United around Bach about early music in the Netherlands, curated by Kailan Rubinoff.

PROF. ROSI BRAIDOTTI CO-CURATOR We like to call our co-curators critical friends: kindred spirits who don’t mince their words and can unrestrainedly do as they wish. This year, Rosi Braidotti, professor at Utrecht University and post-humanist theorist and activist, has the floor. She approaches the galant ideal as a social code, looking far beyond the eighteenth century alone. She associates galanterie, courtliness and rules of behaviour with The Book of the Courtier by Renaissance author Baldassare Castiglione. These models are valid to this day. In a series of salons, Rosi Braidotti considers subjects such as conversational art, ‘soft’ diplomacy, technological (n)etiquette and contemporary manners, from GeenStijl to Beste Beatrijs. A collaboration with design students opens the doors to the world of algorithms, with the programming of galant robots as the target. FUNDATIE VAN RENSWOUDE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ROCOCO IN THE NETHERLANDS The Fundatie van Renswoude on the Agnietenstraat is a beacon in Utrecht’s Museum Quarter. Built in 1761 as a boarding school for orphaned boys, it boasts a stately exterior and sumptuous interior. With stucco work with putti, elegant mantelpieces, rocailles and mirrors, the virtually original interior is one of the most beautiful historical places in the Netherlands. This magnificent Utrecht Rococo monument forms the backdrop for the keyboard demonstrations by Menno van Delft and Artem Belogurov, and for the conversation salons by co-curator Rosi Braidotti. In the tradition of the eighteenth century, she will welcome friends and kindred spirits for stimulating exchanges about life and love, art and literature, science and politics. These salons will be live streamed on Early Music Television (EMTV), so that the whole world can get to know our co-curator and her magnificent workplace.

GEISTER VON SANSSOUCI A PARADISE WITHOUT WORRIES? ‘My little vineyard house’ is what Frederick the Great called his summer residence in Potsdam, where he and his guests found freedom and entertainment. Sanssouci stands for Rococo in the superlative, with nature-inspired ornaments, bacchants making merry, gardens filled with Frederick’s favourite cherries and a Chinese teahouse that has to be seen to be believed. As the epicentre of the Frederician Rococo and the pinnacle of elegance, the castle forms the symbolic hub of this festival edition. ĀRT HOUSE 17, the collective that reaped jubilant reviews last year with a production of Bach’s Coffee Cantata, is creating a musical theatre performance around the royal pleasure garden with singers, musicians, actors and comedians. The commedia dell’arte – an art form that Frederick became hooked on later in life – provides characters and story lines, while top composers from the king’s entourage provide the music.

FÊTE GALANTE A DANCE PERFORMANCE FOR WATTEAU Anyone who refers to galant painting thinks of Watteau’s famous painting L’embarquement pour Cythère. The scene is charming and shows several couples who are mainly interested in each other. They seem to be dancing, but what movements could these be? This is the question that French dancer and choreographer Hubert Hazebroucq explores in his dance performance Fête galante. Drawing on eighteenth-century choreographic sources and treatises on French dance and body coordination, Hazebroucq brings to life the main characters in Watteau’s painting, as well as the atmospheres of the various Parisian scenes they evoke. Two singers, in the role of actors and commentators, are the key figures in the story. They sing arias from operas, divertissements and other theatre music by French composers such as Gillier, Rebel and Mouret. By means of projected engravings, the visual universe of Watteau and his pupils will accompany the dancing and singing characters on stage.

KEYBOARD DEMONSTRATIONS FOR CONNOISSEURS AND ENTHUSIASTS The reign of Frederick the Great coincided with a period of great wealth and diversity in keyboard music. The search for expressivity led not only to new compositional styles and performance modes, but also to the building of experimental instruments. In their lecture-recitals ‘for connoisseurs and enthusiasts’, named after the keyboard volumes which C.P.E. published in Hamburg, Menno van Delft and Artem Belogurov explore the fascinating sound world of rare historical instruments from eighteenth-century Germany and replicas by today’s most prominent builders. In the radiant spotlight stand a harpsichord by Gräbner and a Friederici clavichord, (both by Geert Karman,) an original tangent grand piano from 1790 and a Silbermann fortepiano (by Kerstin Schwarz) as Bach may well have known them, alongside a unique historical clavecin royal. The setting is equally intriguing: Utrecht’s own Rococo monument, the Fundatie van Renswoude.

BACH’S VIRTUAL HIMMELSBURG BACHBOX A festival can only be a music festival when the entire city breathes music. By winning over more streets and squares, the stage for early music in Utrecht gets a little broader and more accessible every year. In 2022, also expect a new music experience on the Neude. Here you can visit the Bachbox (which is also fun for children.). This interactive installation will accompany you to the Himmelsburg: the castle chapel in Weimar that was destroyed by flames in 1774, with a grandstand especially for the musicians right at the top. Bach composed his early cantatas for this chapel. Our colleagues at the Thüringer Bachwochen have succeeded in reconstructing the chapel virtually, with the help of a group of researchers and developers. Equipped with 3D glasses and headphones, we can now travel to this lost space for which Bach created his compositions.

INSTRUMENTS IN THE SPOTLIGHT SYMPOSIA ON HISTORICAL FLUTES AND LUTES The Utrecht Early Music Festival is a festival of concerts, an epicentre of ongoing research, and a place where scientists and musicians meet and inspire each other. During this edition we focus in particular on the historical flute and lute. The Foundation for Historical Performance Practice (STIMU) is organising a three-day symposium on flutes from the Middle Ages to the present day. We look at the instruments themselves, the repertoire and the future. Symposium curator Anne Smith creates a platform where young flautists can present new perspectives on their instrument and explore connections with the modern flute and other musical genres. As part of the International Lute Days, the Dutch Lute Society is curating a symposium on the lute in the galant period, in which the instrument no longer acted only as accompaniment but took on an increasingly prominent role in chamber music.

INTERNATIONAL VAN WASSENAER COMPETITION LATE EDITION A first: this year, for the first time in its almost forty-year history, the International Van Wassenaer Competition (IVWC) will focus on post-Baroque repertoire! Young ensembles on period instruments will compete with each other, tackling music from the galant, Classical and Romantic periods, right up to Impressionism. With the many young musicians focussing on this later repertoire, we expect the level to be remarkably high. Come and sample the competition atmosphere and the sweet taste of victory during the semi-final and final rounds. Both events are free to attend and can be followed online on EMTV.

EARLY MUSIC CARILLON FESTIVAL GALANT BELLS The bells of the seventeenth-century Hemony carillon form the resounding voice of the Dom Tower. As a fixture on the festival programme, this year they will once again be given their own showcase of eminent carillonneurs and young talent. Full of charisma and virtuosity, the carillonneurs translate the galant concert repertoire into a robust sound world, showing festival stars like J.S. and C.P.E. Bach or the Benda brothers in a different light. The world-famous carillon accompanies visitors from one concert venue to another, but it is even nicer to listen attentively to the song of the Dom Tower, for example in Flora’s Hof on the corner of Domplein and Servetstraat: the most refined listening spot in the whole city. Please note also that on Saturday 27 August at noon all fourteen swinging bells of the Dom Tower, including the enormous Salvator Bell from 1505, will peal over the city. This great pealing is heard only a few times per year. It always provides a moving and impressive moment.

A frolicking centenarian with no sell-by date: the Netherlands Bach Society is one of the most renowned and authoritative Bach institutions of our time. With sparkling counterpoint, profound affect and razor-sharp performances, the collective manages to keep Bach’s music amazingly fresh. As the festival’s artist in residence, this Utrecht ensemble is ready to go with a festive opening spectacle based on a historical example: a concert organised by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach in 1786. This most famous of the Bach sons provided a resounding tribute to his father, but also let his own voice be heard. Circa 75 minutes / no intermission
Like the canopy under which we rest every night, the expressive power of music connects generations and centuries. With this in mind the young Sollazzo Ensemble presents a monumental fresco in which past and present meet. The starting point of this scenically conceived concert is a panorama of medieval frescoes and paintings in which biblical protagonists are joined by angels playing music. These angels accompany the scenes with imaginary heavenly music. Vielle specialist Anna Danilevskaia’s celebrated ensemble brings this iconography to life: each part of the concert presents a medieval image, which is first expressed as a tableau vivant and then portrayed by means of ballads and liturgical chants by Francesco Landini, Matteo da Perugia and Johannes Ciconia.

In mid-eighteenth-century France, Pierre de Jéliote shot through the opera firmament like a comet. His strength was his voice: a voluminous, agile and expressive high tenor or ‘haute-contre’ with a silver lining. With that unique sound Jéliote became the apple of Jean-Philippe Rameau’s eye. Hautre-contre Reinoud Van Mechelen and a nocte temporis have assembled an exquisite sample of the music that Rameau and his contemporaries composed for Jéliote. With this Rococo concert programme they once again prove that they justly belong among the showpieces of the early music scene: with an eye for detail, substance and urgency, instrumental craftsmanship and a front man with a one-in-a-thousand voice.

During this galant festival edition Jordi Savall and his orchestra present imposing soundscapes that explore the boundaries of the Baroque and then... go beyond them. Listen to Jean-Féry Rebel, who as an eight-yearold drew the attention of the great Lully. In his famous ballet Les Élémens Rebel makes earth, fire and air fight with chaos. It is one of Rebel’s last compositions: it is 1737 and the composer is now over 70. But with the shocking opening chord that depicts chaos, he heralds a new chapter in musical history. Telemann has been called the father of galant music. In his Hamburger Ebb’ und Fluth, seas and rivers form the backdrop for enticing mermaids, swooning sea gods and raging waves. With Gluck we go a step further. In his revolutionary ballet Don Juan ou le festin de Pierre the fire flares up during the descent into the underworld. From now on music will never be the same.

In the gallery of honour of Renaissance literature, Il libro del Cortegiano (1528) can be found on the most important shelf. Baldassare Castiglione wrote the compendium, which deals with courtly notions of morality and etiquette exactly one year before his death. Since then he himself has become the subject of countless studies and novels, and is now receiving a musical portrayal from the Huelgas Ensemble. Van Nevel’s skill meets Castiglione’s musical world in a programme that visits various places where the top author and diplomat worked. The court of the House of Este in Milan forms the starting point of a journey that leads, through motets, masses, chansons and Italian songs by Loyset Compère, Bartolomeo Tromboncino, Antoine Bruhier and Francisco de Peñalosa, as far as Toledo, where Baldassare died in 1529.

In a particularly poetic genre, young women tell their mothers about facts and feelings related to the transition from childhood to adulthood. They confess their amorous exploits and intimate desires, while their mothers comfort, advise and warn of male mischief. Five hundred years later these secrets from the Spain of the Reyes Católicos are revealed once more.

Johann Sebastian Bach’s St John Passion moves hundreds of thousands of concertgoers every year. To Bach’s unworldly music, dramatist Thomas Höft – in 2019 still co-curator of the Utrecht Early Music Festival – has written a new text that drags the score into a universal no man’s land, somewhere between secular practice and committed experience. The author shifts the focus from the church to the city square with a scenario based around events that took place in Utrecht in 1730 and 1731, when the persecution of homosexuals degenerated into the notorious Utrecht sodomy trials, many of which ended in execution. Together with top soloists, ĀRT HOUSE 17 gives expression to a message that needs to be heard today.

Bach, who ventures into the same territory with his concerto for flute, violin and harpsichord.

Circa 75 minutes / no intermission
We like to do things on a grand scale at the Utrecht Early Music Festival, but it doesn’t often turn out to be quite as massive as this concert with Les Ambassadeurs ~ La Grande Écurie. With four orchestral suites, the 70-strong orchestra is aiming for an evening of exuberant musical entertainment à la Versailles, where important occasions were celebrated in breath-taking splendour. King Louis XV pulled out all the stops for the wedding of his grandson, the Count of Artois. His ‘surintendant de la musique’ François Francœur was given carte blanche to provide the luxurious dinners with a perfect soundtrack. The result: sparkling orchestral pages distilled from the operas of Mondonville, Rameau and other iconic masters. Their compositions are given a festive look, tailored according to the latest fashion, entirely to the taste of a royal court situated between Baroque, Rococo and Classical.

The performance of the oratorio Die Israeliten in der Wüste at the consecration of Hamburg’s Lazarethkirche in 1769 was a kind of musical showpiece for C.P.E.: he had just been appointed musical director, succeeding his godfather Telemann. We do not know exactly what music was heard at the ceremony, but Sébastien Daucé and Ensemble Correspondances have discovered numerous clues. On the basis of testimonies, song texts, liturgies, coronation traditions, archival research and music sources, they present their version of the strictly codified soundtrack that accompanies the Sun King to the throne. His retinue includes iconic French masters such as Étienne Moulinié and Charles d’Helfer, but also international heroes including Orlandus Lassus and Francesco Cavalli. From the joyous entry, to the cathedral ceremony and the handing over of the regalia, the musicians accompany Louis until the Vivat rex! resounds.

LES PLAISIRS DU PARNASSE / DAVID PLANTIER LECLAIR BETWEEN FRIEND AND FOE
TivoliVredenburg, Hertz Circa 60 minutes
€ 23 / € 20 / € 10 Order number 110
Inspired by what he had heard in Italy, JeanMarie Leclair prised French violin music out of its deep-rooted traditions. In the second quarter of the eighteenth century he established the French violin school, which produced dedicated disciples but also ardent sceptics. Les Plaisirs du Parnasse reunites Leclair with rivals Aubert, Quentin and Boismortier for a round of highly strung squabbling.

With the Sanssouci Palace, Frederick the Great established his own Eden in Potsdam. Surrounded by a terraced garden that is actually a vineyard, the king created a haven for philosophy and music. ĀRT HOUSE 17 enters the enchanting park of Sanssouci to the music of Graun, Quantz, Bach and Gluck in a music theatre performance around the complex figure of Frederick, with a surprising touch of commedia dell’arte.

Totally true to eighteenth-century tradition, cocurator Rosi Braidotti welcomes inspiring guests to her salon. With Galanterie as the festival theme, she also cannot ignore Frederick the Great. With Marian Füssel from the University of Göttingen, she talks about the warlord and art lover, adored and despised, and with a long and sometimes dubious influence beyond the grave.

The Rococo is a feast of grace and playfulness, capricious curls and intricate detail work. The ever-poetic Aurélien Delage sprinkles a layer of mother-of-pearl over the harpsichord keyboard with the delicate and evocative concoctions of Louis-Claude Daquin, alongside the whimsical, imaginative and hyper-virtuosic music of Antoine ‘le père’ and Jean-Baptiste ‘le fils’ Forqueray.

In this musical evocation of a Parisian salon, singer Katarina Livljanić and pianist Danijel Detoni view the Middle Ages through the eyes of the belle époque. The central figure is the chanteuse Yvette Guilbert (1865-1944), who performed medieval songs in Parisian cafés. The sometimes frivolous, sometimes sensual music selection leads from Satie and Debussy to the wings of the famous Montmartre cabaret Le Chat Noir.

ORCHESTRA OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY FESTIVE SINFONIAS AND CONCERTOS BY C.P.E. € 39 / € 35 / € 10
Order number 119
Circa 70 minutes / no intermission
A gala of galanterie without the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century is unthinkable. The collective – now with more than 40 years under its belt – is the perfect master of ceremonies to lead this festival edition to its ultimate climax. Guest of honour Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach is given a lap of honour with a regal orchestral programme drenched in rhetoric and sentiment. Two sinfonias constantly wrong-foot the listener with their contrasting episodes that make sparks fly. The flute can also reap its rewards just once more in a concerto on the cutting edge. The exotic double concerto for harpsichord and fortepiano from the last year of C.P.E.’s life crowns the festival.
