Voorwoord

BURGUNDY Xavier Vandamme Director-manager

The term Burgundy immediately makes you think of abundance and luxury. So is this going to be a Festival packed with exuberant music? With polyphony, opera and dance of the highest order, the answer is an emphatic ‘YES’! But the true statement of this Festival is more serious. It is embodied by the Festival’s focus on the neglected 14th and 15th centuries, the era of the four dukes of Burgundy. Their art-loving court became the cradle of the Franco-Flemish polyphony which gained prominence throughout Europe. Hence in this Festival no great names of the 16th century – no Palestrina, Lassus or De Monte – but instead, hitherto unloved 15th-century composers such as Grenon, Tapissier and Vide. For the rest, the emphasis is on the 18th century, with the brilliant Rameau, Dijon’s most famous son. François Couperin is also given prominence: though no Burgundian, he was born precisely 350 years ago. In 2018 we are placing research more in the limelight than ever before: in three academic symposia, experimental concert formulae and, for example, an unashamed place of honour for a ‘difficult’ genre like the French organ mass. So this year not an artist but a genuine curator in residence: Björn Schmelzer and his Graindelavoix have the Janskerk at their disposal for five days, as a space in which to work and experiment. We find it increasingly essential to integrate colleagues’ ideas into the Festival. We love the contrary dialectic that results from this. Les richesses de Bourgogne: we offer you an exceptionally varied programme which aims to put rigid conventions to challenge. This is what, even after 36 editions, keeps us young! À votre santé!

BURGUNDY SABRE RATTLING AND THE NOISE OF REVELRY The Early Music Festival Utrecht 2018 proudly hoists the Burgundian flag! The era of Philip the Bold, John the Fearless, Philip the Good and Charles the Bold survives in the expression ‘the Burgundian lifestyle’, which conjures up images of wealth and power, abundance and luxury, refined court ladies and ambitious knights. In his renowned Herfsttij der middeleeuwen (The Waning of the Middle Ages, 1919) the historian Johan Huizinga sketches a different picture: not an era of bloom but of decline, not a high summer but autumn, not a world driven by noble ideals but a façade of formality that masks the coarsening of society. However artificial, traditions and conventions helped people in the Late Middle Ages to give meaning to the passion, beauty, doubt and sadness in their lives. Grand, magnificent Burgundy in the mirror of its (and our) time forms the backdrop for a Festival edition full of sabre rattling and the noise of revelry, with the most beautiful music from the country that once stretched from Groningen to Mâcon.

Inwijdingsfestival voor het nieuwe barokorgel in de Grote Zaal

MUSIC FOR THE DUKES OF BURGUNDY THE UNKNOWN 15TH CENTURY 1363: Philip the Bold is the first member of the House of Valois to ascend the throne of the mighty dukedom of Burgundy. Four decades later he leaves a vast domain to his son, John the Fearless. After John is murdered, Philip the Good is responsible for a change of course in Burgundian politics, more directed at the Netherlands. Charles the Bold is aiming more at a royal throne, but dies by the sword of a Swiss soldier in 1477. The music from this period forms the heart of the Festival. Tapissier, Grenon, Fontaine, Lebrun, Vide: we are giving a century of totally forgotten repertoire a prominent place in the limelight. It is precisely this music that becomes the cradle of the ‘great’ polyphony of the sixteenth century. Burgundy is the place where it all originated and blossomed.

JOSQUIN DESPREZ PRINCE OF POLYPHONY In the Burgundian garden of delight known as the Utrecht Early Music Festival 2018, one man towers high above the rest: the illustrious Josquin Desprez (ca. 1450-1521), ‘master of the notes’ according to Martin Luther and ‘the prince of music’ according to his contemporaries. The attention paid to this composer is not coincidental: Josquin’s integral oeuvre has been published twice by the Royal Society for Music History of the Netherlands, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. So let the corks pop during this Festival edition, not least in honour of Josquin himself. He determined the musical agenda in Europe around 1500 by propelling Burgundian polyphony to a high point and at the same time giving a push to the Renaissance style that would blossom during subsequent generations. With our congratulations Josquin receives the gift of his own concert series, daily at 17.00, and twice as a grand evening concert.

FRANÇOIS COUPERIN ‘LA GRÂCE, PLUS BELLE ENCORE QUE LA BEAUTÉ’ A quotation of Jean de la Fontaine’s applies to Couperin’s music: it has ‘grace more beautiful than beauty itself’. Couperin ‘le Grand’ was a key figure during the transition from the 17th to the 18th century, and together with Lully and Rameau formed the golden triumvirate of French Baroque. At the same time, with his public affection for Arcangelo Corelli and enthusiastic incorporation of Italian elements, he was a key player in the aesthetic conflict between supporters of the French and Italian styles. Couperin would have been 350 years old this year. This is why the Festival is placing him on the pedestal where he belongs, with delicate and yet full-blooded keyboard music, seldom-performed songs and two splendid organ masses. Jordi Savall is coming in person to honour his hero, with a performance of Les Nations: the ultimate Franco-Italian mix with the unmistakable signature of Monsieur Couperin.

JEAN-PHILIPPE RAMEAU INNOVATOR AND CROSS-THINKER Lulliste or Ramiste? In the mid-18th century in France you were either for or against the exciting, international and unconventional music of Jean-Philippe Rameau. These days the ‘against’ camp is silent: Rameau is considered not only the most famous composer Burgundy ever produced, but also the French equivalent of Johann Sebastian Bach. Of the two, Rameau had the more innovative mind, did not allow traditions and conventions to restrict him, and particularly in the area of harmony liked to play for high stakes. This Festival edition does the same and boasts a colourful Rameau programme. For example, you can hear the seldom-performed opera Les Boréades in a concertante version, and a grand motet will receive its exclusive world premiere. There are also cantatas, chamber music and reconstructions of his organ music, and a world-renowned keyboard duo will treat you to opera arrangements on two harpsichords. Finally, the last concert of the Festival features the requiem of Jean Gilles, which was performed during Rameau’s funeral service. BJÖRN SCHMELZER CURATOR IN RESIDENCE This year the Early Music Festival has an artist in residence who is also responsible for part of the Festival in the role of curator. Björn Schmelzer’s ensemble Graindelavoix, literally translated ‘grain of/in the voice’, does indeed have a unique vocal sound with which it produces early music performances with vision, daring and panache, in which imperfection is not to be feared, but is part of ‘being human’ that bridges time and space. Some critics call it sacrilege, others genius; and there are believers and non-believers in the audience, too. One thing everyone agrees about is that Graindelavoix manages time and again to get under the skin of the music. Björn Schmelzer is a Flemish anthropologist and musician, a thinker and a doer, a man who unites head and heart. With the recognizable sound of his own ensemble and his amused and unorthodox perspective, Schmelzer is one of the most inspiring thinkers on the music scene of today.

GRAINDELAVOIX IN THE JANSKERK A MUSICAL BIOTOPE IN THE HEART OF THE CITY For five days Björn Schmelzer has the Janskerk at his disposal as a space in which to work and experiment. He will give concerts and performances with his own ensemble Graindelavoix, read and debate with author and professor Frits van Oostrom about Huizinga's Herfsttij der middeleeuwen (The Waning of the Middle Ages), and invite his friend and colleague Paul Van Nevel for a concert and book presentation. He has also promised vintage John Cage, heartrending Burgundian lamentations, a staged performance based around Samuel Beckett and an exhibition that links Aby Warburg’s 11/5000 groundbreaking picture atlas with early music. Under his curatorship the concert will become a temple of feisty, fearless sound!

A WORLD OF DARKNESS LAMENTATIONS, DEPLORATIONS AND REQUIEMS In however much luxury and wealth the ostentatious Burgundians lived, death was never far away. Plague, war, illness: mortality was not hidden away in a corner, as has become the unwritten rule today. The Burgundians celebrated death, almost obsessively, with monumental gravestones and exuberant funeral cortèges. Anyone today beholding the marble pleurants at the grave of John the Fearless will get goosebumps. The music of the Burgundian dukes is suffused with this vitalistic trial of strength, with death ever-triumphant. This produces some splendid pages of music, which we are combining in a series of late-evening concerts. From Binchois’ lamentations to Richafort’s requiem.

WHAT’S NEW? RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT WITHIN EARLY MUSIC Early music, a dead art? Quite the contrary! Every day musicologists and performers are going in search of historical sources, instruments and playing techniques. Utrecht is the place where this new research is being assigned an increasingly significant role. During the Festival you can keep your finger on the pulse of ongoing research by means of What’s new?. Following the successful debut of the series during the previous edition, every day of the Festival, in Hertz, we are serving up an al dente portion of news and interpretation. In these fascinating presentations (with free admission) you get a glimpse inside the researcher’s laboratory. Ideal for inquisitive minds.

SUMMER SCHOOL SMART STORIES Behind the dozens of concert programmes is hidden a wealth of stories. In the Summer School we lift the lid of the treasure chest: in succinct lectures on central themes and specific programmes, international experts provide context for the music. The secrets of a ‘new’ Burgundian song book, the Bouffonists’ quarrelling, the archeological reconstruction of a nocturnal ballet: the Summer School is the place to be for melomaniacs with a taste for more.

THREE SYMPOSIA DURING THE UTRECHT EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL The Early Music Festival Utrecht is packed with concerts of early repertoire. It is also an epicentre of ongoing research, in which scientists and musicians meet during symposia, workshops and lectures. This year the Festival hosts no fewer than three symposia on different subjects. The Stichting voor Historische Uitvoeringspraktijk (STIMU, the Foundation for Historical Performance Practice) focuses on the life and work (and performance practice!) of JeanPhilippe Rameau, paying special attention to his operas. The Royal Society for Music History of the Netherlands celebrates its 150th anniversary with a symposium about Josquin and modern editing techniques. And to finish off the feast, the International Lute Event 2018 will present a symposium about lute repertoire.

THE GOOD LIFE ABOUT EATING AND DRINKING With a theme like Burgundy, we must of course not forget the culinary aspect. The French ensemble Doulce Mémoire, which in 2017 presented the dance spectacle Magnificences in the Stadsschouwburg, is this time planning something no less grand – a performance that closely examines the ‘codes’ at a festive banquet at the Burgundian court. With music, dance and some expert explanation of culinary history, etiquette during the Renaissance and making wine without sulphites. At the concerts given by Camerata Trajectina, the advocate of the Dutch Golden Age, you may take your place at the table. You are served an olipodrigo, a stew made of a variety of meats and other ingredients. The Droll Olipodrigo is also the title of a 17th-century collection which includes drinking songs, love ditties and naughty jokes. You are served food, drink and song all at the same time.

CARILLON FESTIVAL MORE CONCERTS, MORE MUSIC, MORE FESTIVAL! Nowhere in the world is early music celebrated as it is in Utrecht, and the hammers and bells add an extra dimension to this celebration: thanks to the eighth carillon festival, the entire city is bathed in the Festival atmosphere. On the basis of the Festival themes, rising stars and internationally renowned carillonneurs have compiled tailor-made programmes that explore Burgundian repertoire and the French Baroque. With the music draping your shoulders like a veil, you walk from concert venue to concert venue. Would you prefer to put time on pause for a while in order to enjoy these open-air concerts to the full? Then Flora’s Hof, at the corner of the Dom Square and the Servetstraat, is the ideal spot to listen. City carillonneur Malgosia Fiebig has once again been asked to do the honours as curator of this series in the Dom Tower.

AN ORGAN FOR FRENCH BAROQUE MUSIC RAMEAU AND COUPERIN IN TUINDORP A residential area of Utrecht. A church from the 30s. Brown brick, slender towers. From outside you’d never suspect that the Tuindorpkerk houses one of the finest Baroque organs in the Netherlands – the only example of organ builder Conradus Ruprecht’s work that has survived – on which French Baroque music can be shown to full advantage. No wonder this instrument plays a key role in this Festival programme, where François Couperin and Jean-Philippe Rameau reign supreme. The pride of the Tuindorp district becomes the stage on which the history of music is brought to life, with an introductory lecture-cum-performance, reconstructions of Rameau’s organ music, and Couperin’s two organ masses.

A genuine marathon as a prelude to the Festival: in the course of three concerts the Huelgas Ensemble will sing an entire alphabet of Burgundian composers, one for every letter. The focus is on composers who were employed by the Burgundian court, with a special exception for Josquin, prince of polyphony. The singers, arm in arm with Paul Van Nevel, visit mass movements, motets and chansons by known and to be discovered masters like Champion, Divitis, Binchois, de Orto, van Weerbeke and many others. With ‘anonymous’ to ‘incognito’ they bring a double ode to the many nameless polyphonists who nonetheless made breathtaking contributions to the polyphonic repertoire of the 15th century. OPENING NIGHT OVERTURE OF BELLS BELLS AND CARILLON CONCERT

This year the festive opening night of the Early Music Festival takes place in the historic heart of Utrecht. And how could we better kick off such a festive evening than with the pealing of bells? Because before the opening concert begins, we will let the good burghers of Utrecht know that for ten days the city will be taken over musically by the Festival. To start with we will hear all fourteen bells that make up the voice of the Dom Tower. This great peal of bells, including the Salvator from 1505 which weighs over 8,000 kg (almost 160 hundredweight!) can be heard only a few days per year, and remains one of the most impressive experiences Utrecht has to offer. After the bells it is the turn of the carillon, played by city carillonneur Malgosia Fiebig.

By way of opening concert you will get not one, but four different musical moments, at different locations in the historical city centre of Utrecht. Just like the Burgundian dukes did in the Renaissance, so the Festival will make its ‘Joyous Entry’. The four Festival themes are illustrated in a sumptuous parade of programmes. A major highlight is the world premiere of a newly reconstructed motet by Festival star Jean-Philippe Rameau, performed by Vox Luminis. Cantica Symphonia invites you to a polyphonic gourmet tasting, with 15th-century works by Gilles Binchois. Graindelavoix, curator in residence, is given the keys to the Nicolaïkerk, and a touch of Couperin completes the foursome.

Although Rameau was employed as organist at various churches for thirty years, there exists scarcely any religious music. His grands motets are the exception. But even when these works are cloaked in peculiar attire – a fabric of récits, airs for one or more voices, choral sections and orchestral accompaniment – they incline more towards the theatre than the altar... For Lionel Meunier, director of the celebrated Vox Luminis (and, just like Rameau, born a Burgundian!), this programme is the fulfilment of a long-cherished dream.

Research and experiment help early music to breathe. A great example is the Renaissance soundtrack that the Orlando Consort made for the silent film La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc, a masterpiece created by Carl Theodor Dreyer in 1928. The director himself suggested that his film might benefit from the use of early music. In addition, the enraptured gestures and facial expressions of the actors form a link between historical traditions and our current acting practices. The Orlando Consort immersed themselves in this lost art and sought inspiration in the expressive looks, poses and gestures to help them formulate a musical solution in the form of Burgundian polyphony. With energetic motets and imploring Gregorian chant, they provide the ultimate soundtrack for this medieval tale of a tragic heroine of the Hundred Years’ War, which forms the political background to the reign of the Burgundian dukes.

‘L’État, c’est moi’: nobody would dare suggest Louis XIV had an inferiority complex. But the view that France was the radiant centre of the universe and French music the ultimate artistic achievement was by no means held by everyone. Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries a fierce conflict raged in Europe – with Couperin and Rameau as well – concerning the superiority of either the French or Italian Baroque. With this concert we return to the origin of the FrancoItalian war of aesthetics. The Ballet Royal de la Nuit was a grand dance spectacle, created by a collective of composers commissioned by the then 15-year-old Sun King. Sébastien Daucé – who reconstructed the work meticulously – and his Ensemble Correspondances will give a dazzling performance of the elegant, comical, moving and burlesque dance music in a sumptuous concert. The recording of this programme carried off a whole string of international prizes, so you simply must see this live version!

Order number 61

During the Renaissance it was perfectly normal to use popular songs as the basis for polyphonic church music. L’homme armé is one illustrious example of this, but the anonymous three-part chanson Malheur me bat also proved particularly attractive to Renaissance composers. This led to a great number of masses being written on the basis of this chanson, including one by Josquin Desprez, who employed a brilliant mixture of cantus firmus and parody techniques: the song is quoted both in the form of a single voice and in fragments with all the voices combined. The sublime Agnus Dei is polyphony such as only Josquin was capable of writing: in three sections, for four, five and six voices, the chanson is gradually absorbed into the counterpoint, until the tenor and upper voice take up the original parts again. In the meantime, the remaining voices are actually finishing off a double canon. With audience favourite Stephen MacLeod and his ensemble of soloists, Gli Angeli Genève, this magnum opus will receive the gripping interpretation it deserves.

JEAN-LUC HO WITH LES MESLANGES COUPERIN'S ORGAN MASS POUR LES PAROISSES € 38 / € 34 / € 10

75 minutes / no intermission

Order number 62

Jean-Luc Ho plays the virile but also moving Messe pour les paroisses of François Couperin. This work forms part of the Pièces d’orgue collection which contains short works meant for performance during services and alternating with Gregorian chant. Whereas another mass written for les couvents (for convents and monasteries) is rather intimate in character, the version à l’usage ordinaire des paroisses (for parishes) reveals a more ambitious and lavish intention. The 18th-century Ruprecht organ in the Tuindorpkerk is the ideal partner for this gripping music by a composer who, though still young, in fact already has everything he needs. An evening that goes back and forth between melancholic musing and distinctive statement, and between virtuoso fugues and jubilant stretti.

As worldwide ambassador for early music, Jordi Savall is the ideal advocate for the composer who three centuries ago raised the topic of ‘Europe’. In 1726 François Couperin published the collection Les Nations. Couperin presents four ordres, each one representing one of the great Catholic powers of Europe in the early 18th century: France (La Françoise), Spain (L’Espagnole), the Holy Roman Empire (L’Impériale) and the house of Savoy (La Piemontoise). Each ordre in turn was given an international identity, and consisted of an Italian trio sonata and an extended French suite. With this work Couperin appears to have single-handedly reconciled the French and Italian goûts – creating not a lukewarm cocktail, but a polyptych that is bursting with an opulence of sound and colour.

Eighteen, rebellious, ambitious, and in search of adventure in Italy, music’s paradise; this describes Jean-Philippe Rameau in 1701. Our knowledge of the route he took is limited, but it is thought he visited Milan and worked as a violinist in troupes of travelling musicians. What might he have played and heard? Vittorio Ghielmi and Il Suonar Parlante tackle this topic and hazard a glorious gamble. l

Paushuize 90 minutes Also on 30 and 31 August. Vegetarian olipodrigo is served on request.

The Netherlands’ very own early music monument, Camerata Trajectina, invites you to their table for a generous helping of ‘olipodrigo’ – a 17th-century recipe for stew containing a variety of meats and other ingredients. De Koddige Olipodrigo (The droll olipodrigo) is also the title of a song collection with burlesques and caricatures, jokes and stories. Food, wind and song are served simultaneously. The dinner is provided by Huize Molenaar.

With this concert we pay our last respects to Rameau, with a performance of Jean Gilles’ requiem as it actually sounded in 1764 at Rameau’s funeral. This was the most famous Requiem in 18th-century France, and was performed at numerous funerals, including royal ones. The composers Rebel, Corrette and Francoeur adapted the score, adding, as a homage to their late friend, sections from his operas, including Castor et Pollux, Dardanus and Zoroastre. From ‘Joyous Entry’ to musical eulogy: with this concert the Early Music Festival 2018 comes full circle, reaching a fitting conclusion.
