State of The Fund

PRESIDENT’S WELCOME MESSAGE October, 2015 Dear Ouimet Fund Friends, The cover of our 2015 Annual Report shows a group of individuals who each represent the many parts of the Ouimet Fund and its supporters who come together each year. I encourage you to take a look at this year’s special fold out cover which highlights many of the groups involved in our business. It really does “take a village” to build a program like ours and all of you contribute to our success.

Ouimet Growing

As you will see throughout this publication, the past year was a very good one in many ways for us, paving the way to announce we will increase annual scholarships by $100,000 to $1.7 Million this year. We are also thrilled with the 29% increase in new scholarship applicants and a 19% increase in financial Scholars from the prior year. Included in that are large increases in our female Scholars (14%), inner-city Scholars (29%), minority Scholars (130%), and Boston Scholars (78%). We are also continuing to work to build our inner-city awards in other parts of the state. Generous individuals added eight new endowed scholarships since this time a year ago, helping us approach the final phase of our Centennial Campaign. Our Endowed Scholarship Program now includes 125 awards, an increase of 28% since the Campaign began in late 2012. With these new awards and the generous additions to so many other endowed scholarships, we just passed a long sought milestone – a yield surpassing $500,000 (30%) toward the annual scholarship pool from this program. My special thanks go to Development Chair, Dick Reilly. With his tireless effort, we are getting closer to being able to award the goal of $2 Million in annual scholarships, and need to keep pushing to keep up with the ever increasing costs of education.

Two Banquets

We had two banquets this past year. The first was to honor Bill Van Faasen with our Spirit of Golf Award. A February blizzard knocked out the event at the last minute, but with tremendous sponsors and Bill’s great personal support, a $245,000 endowed scholarship was created specifically for inner-city Boston students. As the 15th award of its kind, it brings us to $2 Million in inner-city endowments. Our second dinner was our Annual Banquet where we presented old friend Brad Faxon with our Francis Ouimet Award for Lifelong Contributions to Golf. Through the proceeds of the sold-out evening, we made a significant addition to the Raymond Faxon Scholarship. In addition to our loyal sponsors, we were so appreciative of Brad and his wife Dory, for their time and support of the evening.

Strong Fundraising

We had another strong year with our Bag Tag Program and more clubs stepped up to be part of the Centennial level. We also had a very successful Golf Marathon, records for the Alumni Fund and Annual Funds, and exceptional investment returns. We’re also delighted with the growth of social media driven campaigns including the Boston Marathon Non-Profit Program and the Falmouth Road Race where runners wore the Ouimet logo with pride and raised funds to broaden our cause. The Ouimet Fund was the recipient of a large bequest from the estate of Bob Jordan this past year. It was our largest single gift and will provide a special reserve fund for us. Bob was a great friend, and like him, we ask our many friends to consider the Ouimet Fund in their estates. Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE AND CORE VALUES Ouimet Board

We were also saddened by the passing of two long time Directors – Dick Ganong and Peter Maich (page 56). I hope you can take the time to look at the full list of other supporters and friends we remember on that page. We added several new Board members this past year and will soon embark on a program to study our strategic plan for the next several years. And, while we think of our future, we always need to thank our great supporters at the clubs and other groups. One of the best is Ouimet Alumnus and former President Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Dick again stepped up this past year as sponsor of our Annual Banquet and made a special matching gift pledge for our Board to help us get closer to realizing our final goal on the Campaign. We are also proud to share the news that, in early 2016, Dick will be presented the Frank H. Spellman Award by the Massachusetts Golf Association in recognition of his tremendous service to golf.

Scholarship and Staff

Being able to also report an overwhelmingly successful complete first full year of the online application process is something our entire board and staff take great pride in. We have received such positive feedback from the Scholars on this process and it has set a great foundation allowing us to streamline our communications with the families as well as the clubs where our students work. I would like to thank our dedicated and talented staff of Bob, Colin, Danielle, Jackie, Michelle and Ross who work throughout the year with all our constituents, across so many programs, to help make the above success possible. In closing, things are looking very strong for the Ouimet Fund following 2015 and I am encouraged by some of the steps we have begun to take to make our organization even stronger for years to come. Sincerely, Gregory J. Gailius President

INSIDE THE NUMBERS OUIMET FUND’S REVENUE BREAKDOWN FOR FISCAL YEAR 2012 2015

The chart to the right illustrates how The Fund generated revenue during the most recently completed fiscal year 2015 (ending March 31, 2015). As you can see, the greatest support are The Fund’s two back bone programs, the Campaign’s Endowed Scholarship increase and the annual Bag Tag Program. Each accounted for approximately one-third of total revenue.

Revenue Breakdown FY 2015 Endowed Scholarship 32%

Bag Tag Program 32%

Unrestric. Campaign Gifts 12%

Events 10%

General/ Annual Fund 11%

Other 3%

Another 23% as you can see comes from unrestricted giving either toward the Campaign or in the form of Annual Fund, Alumni Fund, memorial donations, etc). With no Annual Banquet held in FY15, various event donations accounted for 10% of the budget with much of that specifically from the annual Golf Marathon. While The Fund is thrilled with the totals, continued growth in many core programs, as well as a recently completed Annual Banquet in April 2015 will show an even more “balanced” breakout next fiscal year.

FUNDMAINTAINS MAINTAINSLOOW LOW ADMINISTRATIVE/EXPENSE FUND ADMINISTRATIVE/EXPENSERATIO RATIO

In general terms, the lower the number the better. For the second year in a row, The Fund maintained a ratio south of 7.5%. This is due in large part to the organization’s small staff and volunteer Board of Directors.

The chart to the right clearly illustrates the marked and significant progress The Fund has made not only in lowering but maintaining its Administrative Expense Ratio. The ratio is a popular marker used by potential donors and is commonly regarded in the non-profit arena as a pertinent and critical metric. It is oftentimes a determining factor in the decision-making process of newer donors concerned with the overall health and vitality of an organization.

ANNUAL BANQUET A HUGE SUCCESS New England native Brad Faxon added his name to a storied and illustrious list of past honorees as he proudly collected the Lifelong Contribution to Golf Award as The Fund’s Annual Banquet held in mid-April at the Sheraton Boston Hotel. Before an audience of 1,200, many of whom had a personal connection to the eight-time PGA TOUR winner regarded as one of the game’s greatest putters, Faxon gave much of the credit for his success to his father Brad Sr. and grandfather the late Ray Faxon. A former Ouimet Trustee, Raymond Faxon himself stood on the Banquet stage more than a decade prior, proudly accepting the Connolly Distinguished Service Award. A portion of the event’s proceeds went to the Raymond Faxon Scholarship, one of the first, and currently largest endowed awards, in The Fund’s portfolio. The Connolly Principe Group at Morgan Stanley served as presenting sponsor and ESPN/ABC sportscaster Sean McDonough guided those in attendance through the evening as Master of Ceremonies. Former Deutsche Bank Americas President Seth Waugh made a special introduction of Faxon and Rich Barrett received the Richard Connolly Distinguished Service Award. The night featured a standing ovation for Peter Maich, regarded as one of the driving forces behind the event billed the kickoff to the New England golf season. Maich, who passed in late 2014, was posthumously named Banquet Chair in Memoriam, ensuring his memory and legacy live on for years and decades to follow. “I’m very honored to be the 2015 recipient of the Francis Ouimet Award for Lifelong Contributions to Golf. Having grown up in New England and having grandparents and parents who were all so involved in the game makes it even more special to me. My grandfather started in the game at the old Hyannisport Caddie Camp and went on to start and run several other caddie camps on the Cape – so supporting caddies and kids who work in the game is deep in my roots,” Faxon said. Known for his prowess with the flatstick, Faxon led the PGA TOUR three times in putting (setting the TOUR putting record) in a career which saw him play on two Ryder Cup teams. He currently sits amongst the Top 70 on the career money list and eclipsed the million-dollar seasonal mark six times. He was ranked in the top 20 players in world rankings for numerous seasons. He has also won twice on the Champions Tour and has successfully into the realm of broadcasting. He recently completed his first season as a hole announcer for FOX Sports’ coverage of USGA events, most notably the US men’s and women’s Opens. Someone who is extremely charitably inclined, Faxon is widely known for co-hosting the CVS Charity Classic in Rhode Island which has raised over $20 Million since 1999. He also co-founded the Billy Andrade/Brad Faxon Charities for Children which has awarded over $8 Million since 1992 to children in Rhode Island. Faxon has been honored with the prestigious 2005 Payne Stewart Award and other awards in recognition of his charitable work. He also started the inaugural Fax and Friends Invitational Tournament in September of 2014 which raised over $500,000 for several charities. Prior to turning professional in 1983, Faxon had an outstanding amateur career which included being the second youngest player ever (18) to win the Francis Ouimet Memorial Tournament. He had a fine collegiate record at Furman University, where he won the Fred Haskins Award as collegiate Player of the Year in 1983. He recently led a drive to keep the Furman team playing when financial problems threatened to dissolve the program.

BRAD FAXON HONORED

The Head Table takes a moment to pose for a photo before the 2015 Annual Banquet. (L-R); Seth Waugh, Richard Asirifi, Bob Donovan, Greg Gailius, Dory and Brad Faxon, Richard Connolly and Sean McDonough.

STUDENT SPEAKER RICHARD ASIRIFI ‘15 Richard Asirifi became the fourth Scholar from Worcester Country Club to deliver remarks at the Annual Banquet. A senior at UMass-Lowell, Asirifi has spent over 10 years as a caddie at one of The Fund’s strongest supporting clubs. His speech took the audience from his native Ghana to Worcester, detailing numerous trials and tribulations along the way. Asirifi’s message was one of hope and perserverance, citing countless examples of how blatant and subtle obstacles did little to derail his journey to success. The Electrical Engineering major took the opportunity to thank his parents, Samuel and Grace, who were in attendance, proudly looking on as their son spoke. Just as his brother Jason did five years prior, Asirifi is poised to enter the workforce and make a positive impact on society, taking the lessons he learned on the grass at WCC. Asirifi is well-known to the Ouimet Fund staff, having taken part in the NFL Alumni Golf Classic, as well as caddying in the Deutsche Bank Championship Pro-Am. At school, he is active in the gospel chorus and regularly tutors students within his academic discipline. He also has a strong entrepreneurial spirit, having launched his own urban clothing line. He has received four endowed scholarships during his time as a Scholar: the Heritage Scholarship and Eddie Lowery Award (given annually to the top caddie throughout all clubs) in 2013-2014 and the Fred and Marion MacQuarrie Scholarship and Heritage Scholarship during the 2014-2015 academic year.

OUIMET MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT FEATURES EXCITING FINISH The 48th renewal of the Ouimet Memorial Tournament commenced with rounds at a pair of venerable North Shore venues that were hosting the event for the first time. The OMT began at Essex County Club and with the scene then shifting to Myopia Hunt. Both venues presented unique and difficult challenges. The final day took place on the same track it has called home since the Tournament’s inception: Woodland Golf Club, Mr. Ouimet’s home club. Boasting one of the strongest and most balanced fields in recent memory, the OMT also featured a number of new initiatives including live scoring, player housing and a well-attended Player Dinner hosted at Essex County Club following Round One. Players hailing from nearly 50 colleges and universities and 14 states descended upon Essex, Myopia and Woodland to battle for the crown. When all was said and done, the stellar field and exacting conditions produced three worthy champions as Peter French roared back from a five-shot deficit to claim victory in the Championship Division, Kevin Carey repeated as the winner in the Lowery Senior Division and Pam Kuong erased the bad memories of her 2014 playoff defeat with a triumph in the Women’s Division. The Tournament was once again chaired by Dick Connolly and golf legend Arnold Palmer served as Honorary Chair.

Championship Division

French, a senior at Johnson & Wales-North Miami, making his third OMT appearance, shared the opening round lead with a 2-under par 68. French, playing out of Maplegate, faltered somewhat on Day Two, firing a five-over-par 77 to slip to a tie for 12th, five shots off the lead of GreatHorse’s Matt Naumec. Players with a combined nine OMT victories stood between French and the top spot as did Far Corner’s Nick McLaughlin, a player who captured nearly every amateur title in New England in 2015 heading into the day the trophies were being handed out. French began Friday’s final round in somewhat pedestrian fashion before going on a scoring binge, torching eight of his last 10 holes with birdies to post a four-under par 3-day total of 211 and retreated to Woodland’s clubhouse restaurant to await his fate. At the time, Naumec held a three-shot lead which would soon rapidly dissipate, resulting in French emerging victorious, coming within one stroke of the largest final round comeback, a feat accomplished by Bill Mallon years before Peter was born in 1972.

2015 OMT champions (L-R): Women’s division victor Pam Kuong, Lowery Division champ Kevin Carey and Peter French, Ouimet Division titlist.

“This was a great victory for me,” French, who joined Jim Renner, the 2003 and 2005 champ, as JWU Wildcats to claim OMT victory, said. “I came to the course with a number in mind and played my best coming down the stretch to make it happen. I left it all out there and it happened to be good enough.”

Lowery Senior Division

Looking to win back-to-back titles, Dennis Pines’ Carey never strayed far from the top of the leaderboard, sitting two off of Ipswich’s Jack Bichajian’s lead after day one and trailing fellow Dennis Pines competitor Joe Walker by a similar margin after 36 holes. The final round saw him pull even after eight holes and win by FINAL RESULTS two over Walker and Elmcrest’s Jack Kearney, who like Carey who is the only man to win both the Championship and Lowery Divisions. Championship Division (par 70-72-72-212) “I just tried to stay in the moment,” Carey said. “I love playing this tournament and preparing to play three courses in three days. This event holds a special place with me and I couldn’t be more honored to once again be its champion.”

Women’s Division

Looking to erase the disappointment of her 2014 one-hole playoff loss to Cyprian Keyes’ Julia Ford, Charles River’s Kuong fired a 75 to best Ouimet Scholar and UCF senior Mary Mulcahy of Hatherly and the Nathalie Filler of Connecticut’s Hartford Golf Club. Kuong made few mistakes during her round, offsetting four bogeys with a birdie and the rest pars. A seasoned and veteran competitor who has teed it up in some 16 USGA Championships and recently advanced to the finals of the US Senior Amateur, Kuong got tremendous satisfaction from her march to OMT victory. “This tournament has such great history,” Kuong said. “I am so proud to add to the legacy of Charles River players winning this event and to join such a strong crop of past champions on the women’s side.” Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund

Relive all of the OMT’s history with this comprehensive record book. The book, which features tournament results dating back to 1968 along with facts and records can be found at Ouimet.org.

The Ouimet Memorial Tournament began in 1968, one year after the death of Mr. Ouimet. The trophies for the Francis Ouimet Memorial Tournament are amongst the most unique in American golf and are kept on permanent display in the William F. Connell Golf Museum.

Connolly Trophy

The trophy for the Championship Division was inspired by the Silver Club display at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland. The putter in the center belonged to Francis Ouimet. Ouimet’s opponents used the flanking clubs, or ones similar to those shown, when he won the historic playoff for the 1913 U.S. Open. On the left is a Harry Vardon type brassie and on the right is a Ted Ray “Millstype” putter. All were gifts to the Ouimet Fund by Dr. Gary Wiren. The silver golf balls hanging from the club are inscribed with the year of each tournament and the champion’s name. The Champion is also presented with a silver ball and a stand on which to display it, and a photographic reproduction of the trophy with the dates, courses and his daily scores inscribed. The trophy was donated to the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund by Richard F. Connolly, Jr. in memory of his father, who died in 1991. Richard F. Connolly, Jr. is a Ouimet Alumnus who served as President of The Fund from 1981-84. He has been Chair of the Ouimet Memorial since 1979.

Lowery Trophy

The Ouimet Memorial Tournament started a Senior Division in 1999 to celebrate The Fund’s 50th Anniversary, and named it after Eddie Lowery, Mr. Ouimet’s caddie in the legendary 1913 U.S. Open. The permanent trophy is a magnificent 21-inch bronze reproduction of the famed picture of Francis Ouimet and Eddie Lowery. Renowned sculptor Bob Pack of Houston, Texas, through a special licensing agreement with the Ouimet Fund, designed it. Mr. Pack contributed the statue for which a seven-inch permanent base was made. The annual winner of the Lowery Division is presented with a nine-inch version of the statue, which Mr. Pack also sculpted.

Women’s Division Trophy

The Ouimet Memorial Women’s Division was begun in 2004 under the guidance of then Ouimet President and seven-time WGAM champion Anne Marie Tobin. The trophy is a classic center piece glass bowl on a wooden base and the winner receives a smaller version.

2015 Annual Report

The Ouimet Fund is thankful for the more than 65 years of support from its generous clubs, their staffs and memberships, who are always committed to organization’s mission. The thousands of members across the state who annually make up Ouimet’s largest Program continue to be the key to the scholarship records. In addition to their personal and collective financial support, they each play a role in being the final links to promoting the Scholarship opportunity to young people who are searching for help in funding their college education.

Bag Tag Program

Each year, The Fund commits that 100% of all dollars raised from the Bag Tag Program goes directly to annual scholarships. This important tradition continues to be a partnership with our 75 supporting clubs that allows The Fund to make such a tangible impact. We encourage any club that would like to get involved in this program to contact the Ouimet Fund office. There are two “levels” of the Bag Tag Program that clubs participate in – the Sponsor Bag Tag Program and the Centennial Bag Tag Program.

Centennial Program

This program, which opened in 2013, offers clubs the opportunity to distinguish themselves through an increased level of support. As of 2015, 27 clubs have joined this program with an increased per member tax-deductible donation and a five year commitment to reach $100 per donation. Rather than the annual tags delivered each spring, an upgraded “permanent” metal tag is distributed in year one which notes the level of support and is engraved with the name of their respective club. When visiting these clubs, you will also notice a beautiful engraved statuette of Francis Ouimet and Eddie Lowery on display, which is one of the ways The Fund is able to say “thank you” and promote their leadership support.

Sponsor Program

Members at these clubs make a fully tax-deductible donation through their club office ($60) each spring or summer and these donors are recognized with annual plastic Bag Tags that they proudly display. Many thanks go out to the NEPGA Professionals and their staffs for their critical assistance in distributing tags on the bags each April.

Ouimet Chairs & Club Leadership

We thank the individual Ouimet Chairs who work tirelessly throughout the calendar to help maximize this great partnership between their club and the Ouimet Fund. Ouimet Chairs are instrumental in facilitating the Bag Tag Program in conjunction with the Head Professionals and his/her staff and the General Managers and his/her team, ensuring that the provided Scholar photo plaques are hung prominently each spring, posting Scholarship recipient news in club communications, recruiting Golf Marathon participants, and encouraging the young golf employees to apply for the scholarship opportunities. Side by side with the Ouimet Chairs, any club representative is encouraged to take an active role in enhancing these programs, driving the kids to Ouimet.org to apply, and even participating in the applicant interview sessions throughout the spring. Those who are involved continue to comment how rewarding it is to see, first-hand, the scholarship process come full circle. Pictured to the left: Associate Director of Events and Club Relations Ross Blacker welcomes Pine Brook Country Club into the Centennial Bag Tag Program. He’s joined by Ouimet Chair Jeff Baron and club General Manager Ronald Passaggio. Pine Brook becomes the 27th Centennial Club. Synonymous with the Ouimet brand, the Bag Tag celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2015. To the right is a plaque featuring tags from the original 1955 rendition to the 2005 tag.

GOLF MARATHON A ROUSING SUCCESS

The 23rd Annual Golf Marathon was held under sunny skies, gentle breezes and warm temperatures in mid-August, a welcome departure from the monsoon-like conditions that competitors encountered during the 2014 renewal of the event. Amidst the backdrop of scenic and challenging Stow Acres, the only host its ever known and the clubs proprietor and driving force of the Marathon, Walt Lankau, over 30 teams teed it up raising money for scholarships. Benefitting from a flurry of pre-event publicity, highlighted by a Sunday feature by noted Boston Globe columnist Kevin Paul DuPoint, the Marathon exceeded the $291K mark as of the printing of this publication. Squads ran the gamut from first-time competitors looking to make their mark and do their clubs and organizations proud to savvy veterans measuring their experience in decades rather than years, knowing exactly which holes to drive their cart to in an effort to play as many holes in the prescribed time limit. As the competitors began to funnel into the tent adjacent to the 10th hole to have their photo taken and hand in their cards, others remained on the Stow grass trying to ascend through the seemingly unreachable 200-hole barrier before the clock struck 4 p.m. and league play took over the South layout.

Results Recap

When all was said and done, first-year Oyster Harbors assistant professional Nick Wiseman upheld his club’s tradition, keeping it atop the money list with $25,193 raised. A select few other clubs eclipsed the $20K plateau as Tedesco and The Country Club each raised over the number. It was the seventh time in the past eight years Oyster Harbors paced the fundraising campaign. A trio of individuals succeeded in completing over 200 holes as Ouimet Scholar and Kittansett PGM intern Josh Christopher led the way with 222 while veteran Dedham Country and Polo Representative Matt Alwin holed out 211 times, and Wiseman, after a slow start, rallied late to play 204. One of The Fund’s signature events and one always circled on the calendar by clubs across the Commonwealth, the Marathon is well-established as the top event of its kind throughout America, a true point of pride for The Fund. “This was a perfect day and the players were able to really play a lot of golf for us. The players and Walt Lankau of Stow Acres are really to be commended,” Greg Gailius, Ouimet Fund President, said as he observed the action from inside the 10th tee tent during morning play.

Clubs Complete Marathon Challenge on Home Turf Each year due to scheduling convenience, some clubs elect to play 100+ holes at their friendly confines. Belmont CC Ouimet Chair Milt Yankfosky along with head professional Matt Zdon (pictured left) played 158 holes. The duo played one round in under 51 minutes, another with just one club and a third decked out in turn of the 20th century attire while using hickory shafted clubs. Ouimet Scholar Chris Wilson ‘18 met the Marathon challenge by playing 144 holes, in considerably more conventional fashion at The Ridge Club.

2015 Annual Report

The Ouimet Fund is deeply committed to providing opportunities for inner-city students. The Fund has reached major milestones this academic year with an increase in inner-city and minority Scholars being great highlights. Additionally, there are now 15 endowed scholarships specifically dedicated to inner-city students. The new William Van Faasen Scholarship has brought the total of inner city endowments to over $2 Million. A major part of The Fund’s Centennial Campaign has been focused on strengthening partnerships with inner-city organizations and reaching out to high schools, youth agencies and guidance/college counselors. The Ouimet Fund has worked hard to build on its 20-year-old Boston relationship with the City’s Golf Management Program at Franklin Park and George Wright Golf Courses. This year, another major push was made to meet individually with the program’s students to encourage and guide them through the application process for Ouimet Scholarships. Past Boston program participants (Ouimet Alumni) helped current students begin their Ouimet applications by using the new online portal. The Golf Management Summer Program is open to high school students from Boston and its neighborhoods (Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, Hyde Park, Mattapan, Roslindale, Roxbury, etc.). Since The Fund’s collaboration with the Summer Program began in 1996, 100+ Boston students have benefitted with over $1 Million in need-based Scholarships. The Fund is also working to expand the Boston model to help more inner-city students in the Worcester area. Plans to collaborate with the city and its municipal golf course are currently in the works for 2016.

Scenes from The Fund’s Inner-City Initiatives

Employees of the Boston Parks and Recreation Golf Management Summer Program work in a variety of roles including assisting with First Tee Programs at Franklin Park and George Wright. The Ouimet Fund hopes that both the Boston Parks program and First Tee participants could someday become Ouimet Scholars.

SCHOLARS STAY ACTIVE Dale Carnegie Training Program

A major benefit to being a Ouimet Scholar is gaining experience and knowledge through the renowned Dale Carnegie Training Program, providing lifelong skills and knowledge. The 13th Annual Ouimet Dale Carnegie “Generation Next – Effective Leadership and Communications” course was again generously contributed by John MacKinnon, Ouimet Director and President of Performance Training, and coordinator of Dale Carnegie Training in the Boston area. Approximately 25 Ouimet Scholars graduated from the eight-week program. Mr. MacKinnon, a Ouimet Society Lifetime Member from Charles River CC, developed a program and donates free admission (a value of over $1,500) to Ouimet Scholars. Each year, graduates of the course report that it was one of the most beneficial they have ever taken. This year marked the 10th year the program has called Bentley University home and as such The Fund is pleased to recognize former Bentley Board Chair Terry Carleton with the Denny Goodrich Honorary Alumnus Award for his help and cooperation.

Deutsche Bank Championship Pro-Am

For the lucky 13th year in a row, Ouimet Scholars, caddies from supporting clubs, local high school students and future Scholars all took their place at TPC Boston to caddy in the Deutsche Bank Championship Pro-Am in early September. The who’s who on the upper reaches of the FedEx Cup list teed it up as Ouimet caddies had the opportunity to be in the same group as Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, Rory McIlroy, Zach Johnson and eventual victor Rickie Fowler. In the weeks proceeding the event, The Fund proudly accepted a generous donation from the Tiger Woods Foundation, the event organizer.

NFL Alumni Annual Outing

As has been the case for the past 16 years, Ouimet Scholars teamed up with past NFL Players and guests as the New England Chapter of the NFL Alumni Association’s annual event at Indian Ridge Country Club. Scholars had the opportunity to spend time with legends of the game including Joe Bellino, Babe Parilli, Steve Grogan and Gino Cappeletti, shown draining a 15-foot putt, riding in a cart with them and keeping score for their group. Recent Wake Forest graduate Danny Mills and recipient of the NFL Team Spirit Scholarship attended the dinner portion of the event. Mills, fresh off his very first day of work, addressed the crowd, saluting them for their support and detailing how his experiences as a caddie at Tedesco Country Club and subsequent acceptance as a Ouimet Scholar was instrumental in achieving his academic goals.

Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS Championship Pro-Am

Nearly 30 Scholars took advantage of an opportunity to rub elbows with legends of the game as part of the Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS, a Champions Tour event Pro-Am held at Belmont Country Club in early June. Scholars were inside the ropes with the game’s best, including eventual champion Bernhard Langer, Colin Mongtomerie, Lee Janzen, Rocco Mediate and 2015 Banquet honoree Brad Faxon, pictured with his group. Ouimet Scholar Nate Marcoulier ‘18, had the opportunity to tote Faxon’s bag during the Pro-Am. Scholars, along with loopers from supporting clubs and future Scholars all took to Belmont’s hilly and challenging terrain to make the day a memorable one for the full amateur field. Following the event, The Fund received a generous donation from the Constellation Foundation. Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund

55% - graduation rate across

The Fund attributes its remarkable and incredible graduation results to a pair of factors. First, the financial investment in the young men and women increases their ability to afford tuition and remain enrolled. Secondly, Scholars have such a strong work ethic, having been around the game of golf from a young age, immersed in a culture of tireless work ethic fostered by leaders and role models within each club. In short, the Scholarship works because THEY work!

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION HAS STELLAR YEAR This year, the Ouimet Fund is proud to report its highest giving AND participation year ever among our Alumni! We thank all former Scholars who helped us reach $104,000 in direct giving – surpassing the historic 2013 Centennial year and equally as successful 2014. Also, it should be noted that, in addition to the Alumni Annual Fund, Ouimet Alumni participate strongly across all programs including the Annual Banquet, golf outings, Board Leadership giving, the Endowed Scholarship program and others. Alumni accounted for 18% of total giving across all areas of giving. The goal of the Ouimet Alumni Association is to re-engage fellow Alumni while offering networking opportunities for Alumni through this great support system. The program, focusing on Alumni participation across the 66 years of Alumni, is a vibrant “family” with a rising number of different affinity groups!

Alumni Champions

The Ouimet Alumni Association continues to grow through outreach, Alumni events, and networking opportunities. The driving force of Alumni participation is a group of over 60 “Alumni Champions” made up of former Ouimet Scholars of various ages, clubs, current cities, and career industries. Events for 2016 are already in planning stages for Boston, Portsmouth and Washington, D.C.! If you would like to get involved in planning one in your area, we can help! Please contact Danielle Pourbaix ‘09 at daniellep@ouimet.org for more information.

Scholar/Alumni eListing

The Fund is excited to announce the launch of the Alumni eListing! This new tool lives on our website and is available exclusively for Alumni and Scholars to share contact information and career/ networking opportunities within the Ouimet Alumni/Scholar community. Visit our website to join today!

Running for Ouimet

The Fund is thankful to have so many generous Alums giving back through financial contributions, but we also appreciate those who pay it forward in other extraordinary ways! On August 16, John Szum ’10 and Franz Brinkhaus ‘12 ran and completed the New Balance Falmouth Road Race for Team Ouimet. Along with three other runners, the team raised over $12,000 for The Fund, an amazing accomplishment and true point of pride. We are currently looking for potential members of our Boston Marathon team. If you, or someone you know, would be interested in fundraising and running for Team Ouimet, please contact Danielle Pourbaix at daniellep@ouimet.org!

How You Can Get Involved

• Become an Alumni Champion • Host an Alumni networking event in your area • Play in the Ouimet Golf Marathon in August 2016 • Organize a Ouimet Alumni golf outing at your club • Donate items or gift certificates that could be auctioned off or used as incentive prizes for fundraisers • Join Ouimet’s fundraising team (Team Ouimet on pg. 14) by running a race, riding a bike, or climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro like Erik Robinson ’10 to benefit The Fund! • Sign up for the eListing for fantastic networking opportunities We want to hear from you! Please contact us at alumni@ouimet.org with any questions or suggestions.

The Fund held Ouimet Heritage Day at The Country Club in mid-May. The event was staged at the site which arguably changed the face of golf as we know it and undoubtedly spurned the legacy and legend of one Francis Ouimet. The wellattended event featured a healthy mix of past and current sponsors as well as friends of The Fund. Competitors tested their games against a track consistently ranked inside America’s top 20 and recently named the host of the 2022 United States Open.

Heritage Day

With most of the field months shy of mid-season form due to the horrible winter, scores were surprisingly low. The LABUR foursome of (pictured L-R) Darrin Lang, Seth Burr, Chris Davis and Chris Doherty captured low gross honors with a 67 while the Blue Cross Blue Shield Massachusetts grouping of Brian Cushing, John Dillon, Eddie Laham and Kevin Manthorpe had their picture taken as low net team with a 57. Messaoud Kerris, a sophomore at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts who performed his golf service at Robert T. Lynch Memorial Golf Course was the student speaker.

Ouimet Society Events

The first Ouimet Society outing of the 2015 calendar year took place in early July at Walpole Country Club. Billed as one of Massachusetts’ hidden gems, the layout stood tall against the field yielding few very low scores. The team of Michael Belkin Sr., Michael Belkin, Jr., Howard Leeder and Dave Trull fired a one-under par 70 to claim low gross honors while Steve Boush, John Palermo, Glenn Stewart and Nick Tessitore leveraged their local knowledge, posting a 57 on their home track to capture low net honors. In the Mixed Division, the grouping of Jim and Mary Moriarty captured low net honors with a 63 to have their names etched on the Scheft Trophy while Pam Allen and Ed Frackiewicz combined to fire a 82 to take home low gross accolades. Dan Allen, a senior at Northeastern University who fulfilled his golf service requirement at St. Mark’s Golf Course was the student speaker. The second Ouimet Society event, the annual NEPGA Pro-Am slated for early October at The Ridge Club, fell victim to a very difficult fall storm, forcing its cancellation.

THE FUND’S ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS The Fund is proud to say that the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund’s Endowed Scholarship Program has now grown to 125 permanent awards. The “endowed scholarship creators” see these special awards as a wonderful way to permanently associate one’s self, an organization, or a loved one, with golf, education, and young people. In academic year 2015-2016, 30% (or $500,000) of The Fund’s awards come from Endowed Scholarships. In addition to a flexible agreement program, the creators of endowed scholarships receive full tax deductibility, have the name of their award listed on a “gold leaf” board at Golf House on the grounds of TPC Boston, attend a special donor/ recipient reception and are given a report on the special individual who receives the award each year along with the financial performance of their permanent endowment.

2015 Annual Report

The Endowed Scholarship program has seen steady and significant expansion in the past five years. As such, the Endowed Reception saluting Scholarship creators and recipients continues to grow, with attendance records being set every year only to be broken the next. The 2015 reception was no exception as nearly 140 attendees came to Wellesley Country Club in mid-July. Prior to the official program getting underway, Scholars from throughout Massachusetts mixed and mingled with each other as well as the ever-expanding roster of Endowed Scholarships creators. This gave Scholars an opportunity to say thank you to those who in part have made their dreams of higher education a reality. Patrick Scannell ’75 (pictured right), was the evening’s keynote speaker, delivering an inspiring and powerful talk to the room. Scannell, who achieved tremendous success within the technology sector encouraged Scholars to not take no for an answer and to persevere no matter what the odds are. Kelsey Frahlich (shown below) a sophomore at Saint Anselm College who performed her golf service at Southers Marsh GC, gave a first-hand account as to how monies from The Fund enabled her to attend college. Alum John Reid ‘01 also presented remarks, describing how his time a Brae Burn CC was intrumental in this future success. In addition to the three speeches, a handful of presentations were made as new Endowed Scholarship creators were recognized. Among those saluted were Eddie Krovitz, creator of the Edward J. Krovitz, Jr. Scholarship and Bob Bachman, who endowed the Robert B. Bachman Scholarship in memory of his father. Other presentations were made to Director Tom “Red” Martin as part of the Martin Family Scholarship and to the creation of the Dennett Goodrich Scholarship. Development Committee Chair Dick Reilly spoke of the Centennial Campaign and Endowed Scholarship initiatives’ many successes while encouraging those in the room not to become complacent and continue supporting The Fund and all it accomplishes.

CAMPAIGN SUCCESS CONTINUES

Led by a dedicated Campaign Planning Committee, the Centennial Campaign: Investing in Lifetimes officially kicked off in November of 2012. The Fund’s goal over the past three years has been to expand its financial resources by a minimum of $5 Million in order to reach an annual Scholarship total of $2 Million awarded, with an increase in inner-city awareness and aid. With a fantastic response from Friends of The Fund, the Campaign is in the homestretch at $4.7 Million raised and 27 new endowed scholarships created, an increase of nearly 34% in that realm. Through the Centennial Campaign, The Fund’s goal is to: • Expand Scholarships for Inner-City and Minority Youth • Increase Annual Scholarships • Increase Endowed Scholarships

Expanding Inner-City Outreach

As part of the Centennial Campaign, the Ouimet Fund has established partnerships with innercity organizations and high schools to increase awareness of The Fund’s mission and advocacy to young people and families who need help overcoming the financial barriers to higher education. The Ouimet Fund is proud to have celebrated its 20-year partnership with the City of Boston’s Golf Management Summer Program at Franklin Park and George Wright Golf Courses. This year, a major push was made to individually coach and advise students and encourage them to fully benefit from their eligibility to apply for Ouimet Scholarships. With over $2 Million in its endowment specifically earmarked for inner-city scholarships, The Fund was proud to award $214,183 overall to inner-city young men and women this year to help them pursue higher education.

RICHARD F. CONNOLLY DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD The Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Distinguished Service Award was established in 2000 in honor of Mr. Connolly, a Ouimet Scholarship Alumnus, Director, Trustee and former President who has proudly served The Fund for nearly four decades. Mr. Connolly is the embodiment of everything a Ouimet Fund volunteer can be. For the past 36 years, he has been Chairman of the Francis Ouimet Memorial Tournament, considered one of the region’s most prestigious amateur events. He has also underwritten the production of the Richard F. Connolly, Sr. Trophy, the Ouimet Memorial’s permanent trophy that is one of the most unique in all of golf. Mr. Connolly has also been the driving force in the establishment of the Francis Ouimet Award for Lifelong Contributions to Golf Annual Banquets. He established an endowed Ouimet Scholarship in his family’s name and helped The Fund in too many ways to name. The Connolly Award is presented annually in his honor. Mr. Connolly is a member of Concord Country Club, The Kittansett Club and Weston Golf Club. He was feted with a special dinner and presentation of The Fund’s Spirit of Golf Award, resulting in largest endowed scholarship in Ouimet Fund history.

2015 RECIPIENT RICH BARRETT Rich Barrett has had Ouimet blood in his veins since first receiving the Scholarship to go to Boston College. Over the years his involvement and dedication have grown even more. Rich started as a caddie at Charles River Country Club, and was mentored by and frequently caddied for Ouimet Alum and former President Charlie Fox along with Ted Highberger, who would eventually precede Rich as another Ouimet President. They pushed the promising young caddie to the Ouimet Fund, and he went on to BC, graduating in 1989. Over the next few years, he worked with Ernst & Young, and then went on to Harvard Business School where he again received Ouimet help, becoming only the fourth Ouimet Scholar to also receive the Bill Danforth Ouimet Scholarship. He graduated from HBS in 1996 and went on to assignments with Fidelity and Wellington Management. He joined the Ouimet Board in 2001. Over the next few years, he served on numerous committees, most notably Club Relations, Centennial, Finance & Investment and Development, where he was Chair. He brought his great knowledge of finance, management and electric energy to greatly help in all areas. He was President from 2008-2010, and is now a Trustee. Rich and his wife, Jean, became Husband and Wife Lifetime Ouimet Society Members in 2000 and endowed a scholarship in 2004. He has been a long-time Banquet sponsor and sponsor of other Ouimet events. Rich has also secured several other endowed scholarships and banquet sponsors. An initiative of his created the impetus for the Centennial Bag Tag Program. Barrett is the Chief Investment Officer at The Flatley Company and is a longtime member of Charles River Country Club, recently serving as its President. He also was a part of the Massachusetts Golf Association’s Executive Committee. He and Jean are parents of four children and make their home in Westwood.

GOODRICH HONORARY ALUMNUS AWARD The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund renamed its “Honorary Alumnus Award” after Denny Goodrich when he retired from the Ouimet Fund’s Board of Directors in 2009 after 37 years of service. Mr. Goodrich, of Dedham Country and Polo Club, was the inaugural recipient of the award in 2003 and also the Ouimet Fund’s Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Distinguished Service Award’s awardee in its debut year of 2000. For 13 years, he served as the Vice Chair of the Ouimet Fund’s Annual Banquets. He was Ouimet President from 1990-1992. “Denny is the epitome of a Ouimet Alum, and this is a very small way to always remember all he has done for the Fund. His contributions have been immense,” then-Ouimet Fund President Richard J. Barrett said when the award was re-named in his honor in 2009.

2015 RECIPIENT TERRY CARLETON Carleton has most graciously provided meeting space at Bentley University and refreshments for the Ouimet Fund’s Dale Carnegie program for the past ten years. He has also been a regular attendee at numerous Ouimet events and supported the Ouimet Fund in other ways over the years. He is a strong support of the Charles River caddie program, regarded as a fertile breeding ground for future Ouimet Scholars. “The contribution of space at Bentley for our Dale Carnegie program for Ouimet Scholars has been a huge benefit. We are so grateful to have had this the past ten years and this award celebrates those ten years. The Bentley space combines with John MacKinnon of Dale Carnegie and Performance Management Associates contribution of his teaching staff and programming to make something that has helped 275 Ouimet Scholars over the years. This is another great opportunity Ouimet offers its Scholars and we couldn’t do it without Terry and John’s help. We’d honored John with this award in 2006 and now it completes the honoring of this great team,” Greg Gailius, Ouimet Fund President said. The Award was presented at the Ouimet Annual Meeting at Tedesco Country Club. Terry was the long-time Executive Vice President at Hill, Holliday, Connors and Cosmopulos and is a member at Charles River Country Club. A 1977 Bentley graduate and member of its Athletic Hall of Fame, Carleton still ranks high atop the school’s career men’s soccer scoring lists. In 2014, he was enshrined into the College Sports Information Directors of America (COSIDA) Capital One Academic All-America Hall of Fame. During his tenure as board chair, he led the transition of Bentley’s reclassification from a college to a university while also overseeing a period of major expansion in academic, residential and athletic/recreational facilities. The “Honorary Alumnus” designation seeks to acknowledge that there are many people who have been important to the Ouimet Fund and/or the game that either did not need assistance or did not apply for assistance when they went to college. Each year, the Alumni Committee conducts a nominating process with the Ouimet Directors, Trustees and Alumni Committee including requesting basic information and a paragraph or so on the merits of the individual being nominated. The “service to golf” or great involvement with the game could be as a volunteer, as their career, or possibly as a competitor. The candidate must have been generous in their support of the Ouimet Fund, either by contributing financially or by volunteer or exceptional professional service.

Ouimet Chairs serve in a multitude of capacities at the approximately 100 Massachusetts clubs that actively support the Ouimet Fund. Ouimet Chairs coordinate the sale of The Fund’s most critical and recognizable revenue source, the Bag Tag at their club. They may also lend a hand in the development of caddie programs, recruit young workers to apply for the Scholarship, participate in the interview process and arrange for their club to play host to a day of Scholar interviews. They also get involved in a numer of fundraising roles, including recruiting new Lifetime Members into the Ouimet Society, making prospects aware of the Ouimet brand availing them to the many giving opportunities existant as well as arranging for their club to take part in the Golf Marathon and Annual Banquet.

The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund awarded its 2015 Ouimet Chair of the Year Award to Bill Kelleher of Pocasset Golf Club. Mr. Kelleher was recognized for his efforts in front of those in attendance at The Fund’s Annual Meeting at Tedesco Country Club.

Since joining as a Ouimet Society Lifetime Member in 2006, Bill has been a tireless annual volunteer. Pocasset Golf Club, one of The Fund’s strong Bag Tag clubs, boasts a fantastic participation rate partly in thanks to Bill’s growing enthusiasm and the support he has received from the Golf Committee. For the past three years, Bill has also recruited a Pocasset golf employee to participate in the Ouimet Golf Marathon each August, engaging members and friends to raise additional funds for Ouimet Scholarships.

State of The Fund

OUIMET CHAIR OF THE YEAR

Bill, the recently retired founder of Kelleher & Sadowsky Associates, has been the Ouimet Chair at Pocasset Golf Club since 2009. He has brought many stakeholders together in his career in the commercial real estate world and he continues to do the same on behalf of the Ouimet Fund. He has also served in the past as Ouimet Chair at his other club, Tatnuck Country Club, and, candidly, is a champion for The Fund’s mission wherever he can across the state.

Members at Pocasset, and others who saw it, also can appreciate the fantastic video message (see screenshot below) that Bill produced in 2015 with the audio/visual help of his friend Joe Pagano. It highlighted the many ways that the clubs support The Fund and in turn the hundreds of annual Ouimet Scholars. The Fund is so fortunate that he fills his calendar for the cause - penning the spring Bag Tag letter, volunteering his time to interview Scholarship applicants, organizing groups to play in Ouimet outings or recruiting new Lifetime members. At the end of the day, core to the cause are the young people and anyone who sees Bill on a golf course will always note how he engages the workers about their college plans and Ouimet applications. There are many examples, but Bill Kelleher is the epitome of a Ouimet Chair and he has certainly earned this special honor. “We are so proud to recognize Bill for his tremendous work, not only in 2015, but for the past decade that he has dedicated to The Fund’s programs. I know I particularly can point to the dozens of Ouimet Scholars and Alumni who were encouraged by him as a direct product of his efforts to better the lives of the kids in our community,” Ouimet Fund President Greg Gailius, said.

SPIRIT OF GOLF AWARD HONORING WILLIAM C. VAN FAASEN In some circumstances, success is measured in less than conventional means. While The Fund’s Spirit of Golf event fell victim to one of Greater Boston’s countless winter storms and months of planning and preparation fell by the wayside, the endeavor was a smashing success financially as over $200,000 was raised to benefit golf in the inner-city, the proverbial baby of honoree Bill Van Faasen. In turn, he became the seventh individual to be presented with the Spirit of Golf Award, presented to those who love the game of golf and are deeply committed to charitable and community support. In turn, an endowed scholarship bearing Van Faasen’s name was established with event proceeds with monies specifically earmarked to benefit inner-city and minority youth in their pursuit of higher education. While nearly 400 of his friends, supporters and colleagues, some hailing from as far away as Michigan, were deprived an opportunity to pay tribute in person to a man that’s meant so much to the local community, the impact of the event was as strong as possible. The Fund’s renewed emphasis on growing golf in the inner-city has already paid huge dividends and numbers don’t lie as the number of applicants within the demographic has nearly doubled in the past year. The event also afforded The Fund an opportunity to further its brand to a new audience of supporters as presenting sponsors Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Eversource Energy and Liberty Mutual Insurance along with a host of others contributed greatly to the cause. “Bill Van Faasen has been a great business leader in Boston, is one of the most respected people in golf, and is deeply committed to the inner-city. He exemplifies everything this award is about, and we are proud to honor him. This event will create a major endowed scholarship in Bill’s name for inner-city students within the Ouimet Fund,” Fund President Gregory J. Gailius, said. Van Faasen, someone who eschews the spotlight and prefers to have his actions take precedence over words, was recognized at The Fund’s Annual Banquet in April. He joins names such as Dick Connolly, John Hamill, Bud and Pat Roche and others to receive the prestigious distinction. As alluded to above, the award was established to recognize those who have given back in the spirit of the classic motto, “From what golf has given you, let us give something back to golf.” “I am deeply honored by be recognized by the Ouimet Fund with the Spirit of Golf Award,” Van Faasen said. “What really gets me excited is that all proceeds with go to further The Fund’s inner-city scholarship program. We are much a product of our opportunities as our abilities. We really need to help create better opportunities for these kids, that’s what this event is all about.” The Spirit of Golf Award is the latest recognition of Van Faasen’s leadership and contribution to the community. He is a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award in Health Care from Health Care For All, the Maimonides Award from the Anti-Defamation League, the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America, the New England Council’s New Englander of the Year Award, and recipient of the Distinguished Bostonian from the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. In recognition of his contributions to the community, BCBSMA established the William C. Van Faasen Community Service Sabbatical Program, allowing one BCBSMA employee per year a leave of absence to work for a charitable organization.

MEMORIAL DONATIONS Listed below are memorial donations The Fund has received. The Ouimet Fund has a full memorial donations program, which remembers people who have had golf as a favored pastime in their lives. Included in this list are several long-time Ouimet supporters who died within the past year and ongoing gifts that remember people who passed away previously. Among those remembered was Richard J. “Dick” Ganong, a proud Ouimet Alumnus who caddied starting at age 11 at Brae Burn CC. He went on to play golf at Boston College and had a distinguished career in the financial services industry. Mr. Ganong was a member of the Ouimet Board of Directors for 18 years (1991 – 2009), Alumni Chair for ten years, and served on several other committees. Dick was also a long-time MGA Executive Committee member and rules official. His family established the Richard J. Ganong Scholarship in his honor 2003. Dick holds a special place in Ouimet history as it was his suggestion that The Fund honored Former President George H.W. Bush at the 2002 Banquet. The Fund also lost long-time Director, Peter Maich this past year. Mr. Maich served with tremendous distinction as a Ouimet Director since 1995 in a number of roles, but most notably as Chair of the Annual Banquet since Arnold Palmer was honored in 1997. He was also Ouimet Development Chair for several years helping the original campaign, and served on the Ouimet Society, and other committees. As Banquet Chair, he was instrumental in many of the facets of the event that have made it into the largest golf banquet in the U.S., and developed numerous sponsorships including that of his former company, The TJX Companies. He created an endowed scholarship in his late father’s name and assisted The Fund in many other ways. He was the 2005 recipient of The Fund’s Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Distinguished Service Award and, last fall, was honored with the Denny Goodrich Honorary Ouimet Alumnus Award.

Eddie Lowery Bequest Society In 2013, as part of its Centennial Campaign, the Ouimet Fund formally created the Eddie Lowery Bequest Society. This new group places a focus squarely on a new form of giving for the organization. The Society is pleased to recognize, as members of the Lowery Society, individuals who have made a future commitment to The Fund through an estate gift. Planned (or bequest) gifts naming the Ouimet Fund as beneficiary through a will, trust agreement, life insurance policy or other deferred gift such as a 401(k) provide a vital and necessary resource for our Scholarship Aid. The Fund was the recipient of a large bequest from the estate of Bob Jordan this past year. It was Ouimet’s largest single gift and will provide a special reserve fund. We couldn’t be more appreciative for this generous donation. In the event you desire to learn more as to how you can include The Fund as part of your estate plan and join this special group of supporters, please contact Executive Director Bob Donovan, at bobd@ouimet.org. We are pleased to recognize Lowery Society Members Duffy Brent, Robert P. and Theresa N. Donovan, Gloria O’Brien and the William G. O’Brien Scholarship Fund, Dorothy B. Holt Trust and as mentioned Bob Jordan and the Mix-Jordan Scholarship Fund. Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund

IN MEMORY OF THOSE WE LOST In addition to the names listed in the memorial donations section on the left, The Fund also mourns the loss of these people who made great contributions over the years. Harold Casson was a long-time member of Oakley Country Club who, along with his wife Mary Lou, endowed the Ouimet’s Casson Family Scholarship in 2006. Mr. Casson also interviewed Ouimet Scholarship candidates and helped in many other ways Joe Gordon was the long-time Boston Herald Golf Editor. He totaled 40 years in covering baseball, hockey and golf and was a board member of the Baseball, Hockey and Golf Writers Associations. He was a frequent attendee at Ouimet events including the Banquet and the old Duxbury Eight Club event. He wrote often about The Fund and was a great friend to Ouimet. John Hines was a Boston native who managed several of the Jack Nicklaus enterprises for nearly 30 years. He and his late wife, Ellen, were very friendly with Jack and Barbara Nicklaus, and John was greatly responsible for the appearance of Jack and Barbara at the 2007 Ouimet Banquet. Proceeds of that event established the Ouimet Fund’s Ellen Hines Endowed Scholarship. Dan Hurley had been a President of the Massachusetts Golf Association. He was also a highly-esteemed golf official who volunteered with the Ouimet Memorial Tournament and served as its final round first tee announcer for many years. Dan also annually served as a head interviewer for Ouimet Scholarship applicants. Carolyn Lynch was the wife of Ouimet Alumnus and Trustee Peter Lynch ‘65. The Lynchs have been frequent donors and supporters of The Fund and its many events, as well as a number of local and national charities. Mrs. Lynch will be remembered for her generosity and dedication to enabling young people to achieve an education and reach their full potential. Mayor Thomas M. Menino was largely responsible for the City of Boston’s Summer Jobs Program that created jobs at the William Devine Franklin Park and George Wright Golf Courses. The Program has made over 100 students eligible for over $1 Million in Ouimet Scholarships since 1998. Mayor Menino was very proud of the Program, served as Banquet Honorary Chair for many years, and spoke twice at the Ouimet Banquet, in addition to other contributions. Louie Newell had been a lifelong member of The Country Club and was the club’s official Historian for many years. He served on the committees of numerous major championships that had been played at TCC. He had also been a key liaison to the Fred Anders Alumni Tournament Committee whose annual event funds the Anders Endowed Scholarship for Ouimet Scholars at TCC. The Anders Committee created the Newell-Pyle-Sears Award in honor of Mr. Newell, and the late Charlie Pyle and John Sears in 2013. Mr. Newell also worked closely with Mark Frost on historical details as Mr. Frost researched his book, “The Greatest Game Ever Played” which was made into a move of the same title. Gerry Ridge was a highly successful businessman, entrepreneur and philanthropist. He had been an interviewer for Ouimet Scholarship applicants and in 2006 created the Ouimet’s Boston Police Athletic League Scholarship for inner-city Ouimet Scholars from Boston. It was one of the Ouimet Fund’s earliest inner-city scholarships. John Sears was a great Ouimet supporter through the annual Anders Day at The Country Club which funded the Ouimet’s Anders Endowed Scholarship. An additional Newell-Pyle-Sears Award was created partly in his honor in 2013. Mr. Sears was Commissioner of the MDC in the 1970s and helped create a very favorable lease which allowed the Ouimet Fund to build its first Golf House office and Museum on the grounds of the Leo J. Martin Golf Course in Weston. The building was home to the Ouimet Fund and other golf organizations for 27 years.
