February 9, 2015 Dear Friends, Tonight is a special evening in Ouimet Fund history as we honor someone who has been, in many ways, the driving force in bringing the game of golf to inner-city communities of Boston. As you will read in these pages, hear in our program tonight, and see in the videos, Bill Van Faasen has made an impact like no other. A new Director on the Ouimet Board, I am also proud to call him a true friend of The Fund and a prime example of how we can all give our service and dedication to this terrific cause. Tonight is an important opportunity to showcase The Fund’s inner-city initiative, which at this point, has awarded $1 Million to over 100 inner-city Scholars in Boston. Tonight is also about building and moving forward to help more deserving young men and women achieve their educational goals. The proceeds from this event will go directly towards creating a new inner-city endowed scholarship in Bill’s name, an honor that will help generations of Boston Scholars in the years to come. Mr. Van Faasen’s dedication to The First Tee and the Ouimet Fund truly epitomizes the “Spirit of Golf,” and the incredible outpouring of support for this event is testament to how many lives he has touched and how many people he has helped during his time living in Massachusetts. Thank you for being with us and for your support. It is my great pleasure to know Bill and to serve with him. We are excited to recognize all Bill has done and to say “thanks” to him. I am also proud to pass on the appreciation of the entire Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund to Spirit of Golf CoChairs Andrew Dreyfus, David Long, Thomas May and Richard Reilly – as well as the entire committee, and the many sponsors and donors who have made this evening possible. Thank you for your support and enjoy the evening! Sincerely,

Winter, 2015 Dear Friends: On behalf of the Massachusetts Golf Association, I would like to express our sincerest congratulations to Bill Van Faasen on being named recipient of the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund’s “Spirit of Golf ” award. As a member of the MGA Executive Committee since 2005, Bill’s contributions and innovative ideas have lifted our organization to new heights. However, what truly sets Bill apart from all others has been his dedication to junior golf and his commitment to making sure that our youth are given the opportunity to thrive and succeed. Bill firmly believes that we can impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf. His core beliefs have been backed by action and leadership. Bill has been a staunch supporter of the MGA’s junior golf program, which has introduced more than 75,000 Massachusetts youth to The First Tee’s golf and life skills curriculum since 2003. Thanks in part to Bill’s guidance and vision, we will be soon be opening a fifth program affiliate in Boston which will allow The First Tee of Massachusetts to reach even more inner-city youth and expand the overall reach of our program. We are proud to salute Bill on this latest honor and are indebted to him for his service to not only the MGA but to the many community and golf organizations that he has served over the years. Thank you, Bill. You have truly made a difference in the lives of so many. Sincerely,

TONIGHT’S MASTER OF CEREMONIES-MIKE DOWLING Mike Dowling is a familiar face and voice to New Englanders and a special friend to area golf. Dowling regularly donates his time and efforts to emcee events celebrating amateur golf throughout the Commonwealth. In the past six months, Dowling has taken to the microphone at the MGA’s Hall of Fame Dinner and Salute to Champions. He graced the stage at The Fund’s 2004 2004 Annual Banquet honoring Chi Chi Rodriguez. Dowling came to the Greater Boston market in the early 1980’s and quickly established himself as a major presence serving as the principal sports reporter at ABC affiliate WCVB for nearly 30 years. Along the way he covered World Series, Super Bowls, Stanley Cups and NBA Finals. Mike has a special connection with tonight’s honoree Bill Van Faasen as the two along with others teamed to capture the final Pro-Am at the now-defunct PGA TOUR stop CVS Charity Classic at Pleasant Valley CC in 1998. 2015 Spirit of Golf Dinner Honoring William C. 2015 Spirit of Golf Dinner Honoring William C. Van Faasen

GETTING TO KNOW OUR HONOREE This much is widely known about Bill Van Faasen: He’s worked for the same company since the age of 21, rising through its ranks. Despite not picking up a golf club until the age of 25, he has claimed a number of prestigious events and sports nearly a scratch handicap, pretty good for someone who was self taught. In addition, he was at the helm as his club hosted a major international competition broadcast across the world. An Eagle Scout, he’s lived by the Boy Scout mantra of leaving places better than when he found them. Despite incredible demands on his time professionally, he has expended just as much if not more energy on civic endeavors, never saying ‘no’ to a request to make a difference. He’s the consummate “bridge builder” and quintessential “good guy” earning respect and acclaim throughout the community and business world for seeing through class and color lines and enacting meaningful and lasting change. He shies away from the spotlight, instead choosing to spend his time helping others and surrounding himself with a tight circle of family and friends instead of engaging in self-promotion. The son of a World War II veteran and product of a working class upbringing, he’s never forgotten where he’s come from, still seeing the young boy from the Motor City scratching and clawing for everything he’s earned when he looks in the mirror. The stories that are less known involve Van Faasen essentially taking a 15-year old youngster who caddied for him at a pro-am under his wing, serving as a mentor and confidant to this day, 30 years later. The boy wasn’t the only one the Van Faasen’s helped raise, giving them as much love as the three kids of their own. Another story never plastered on the front page of the papers was when a local high school golf team needed equipment and a place to play Fear not, Van Faasen stepped in, providing unwavering assistance and support for some 15 years, eschewing thanks and the spotlight in the process. It can be said that the good guy (albeit NOT self-proclaimed), the son of the Midwest, the shrewd and wildly-successful business leader, can be counted on anytime, anywhere for anything. Currently the Chair Emeritus of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Inc., Van Faasen was elected Chair of the Board of Directors for the second time in September 2010, retiring from the position in March 2014 when assumed his current role. Bill was recruited to join Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts in June 1990, following a two-decade long stint at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan where he was Senior Vice President of Operational Services and served in various operational, marketing, and health care capacities. He served as the President and Chief Executive Officer at BCBSMA from 1992 until February 2004, when he resigned as President of the company. In 2005, he stepped down from his position as Chief Executive Officer. Van Faasen has been engaged extensively in civic and community activities since his arrival to the Boston area and has given his hand to many of the community’s signature organizations. Many in the Boston area marveled at how he hit the proverbial ground running, wasting little time becoming acclimated to local causes. Bill credits lessons learned both at home and with Leadership Detroit, an initiative of the Detroit Area Chamber of Commerce for his penchant for helping others. He formerly served as Chair of the Initiative for a New Economy (INE), Chair of Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, and Chair of United Way Massachusetts Bay. He formerly served on the Boards of Boston Private Industry Council; the Boston 2015 Spirit of Golf Dinner Honoring William C. Van Faasen

BILL VAN FAASEN PROFILE Minuteman Council, Boy Scouts of America; and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation. Bringing his expertise to the business community, he is currently Director of Northeast Utilities and serves as Lead Director, Liberty Mutual Group. He formerly served on the Boards of BankBoston, Citizens Bank of Massachusetts, IMS Health, where he served as Lead Director, PolyMedica Corporation, and Tier Technologies. In the golfing world, Bill has served on the Executive Committee of the Massachusetts Golf Association since 2005. He was a driving force and first Chairperson of Black and White on Green, an initiative to unite leaders of the business community with minority business leaders. This program is regarded as the predecessor to the City of Boston’s Summer Golf Management venture, which the Ouimet Fund has collaborated with since 1996. He has played in countless MGA events including the State Amateur, Senior Amateur, Four-Ball, Senior Four-Ball, Father and Son, and this year the Super Senior. He served as General Chairman of the 2010 USGA Curtis Cup held at the Essex County Club, and has also served as Golf Chair at Essex, winning its prestigious Four- Ball on two occasions. In addition to the Essex County Club, Van Faasen is flanked by his wife Jane (left) and legendary he is also a member at Old Sandwich Golf Club, The amateur golfer Carol Semple Thompson during the 2010 Curtis Loxahatchee Club and the Medalist Golf Club. He Cup he chaired at Essex County Club. also belongs to the Hickory Shafts, the New England Senior Golf Association, the United States Senior Golf Association, and the Society of Seniors. He has also played in the Lesley Cup as a member of the Massachusetts Team since 2001. Bill has been lauded repeatedly for his values, leadership, and contribution to the community seemingly running out of space on his walls and mantle. Van Faasen is a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award in Health Care from Health Care For All, the Maimonides Award from the Anti-Defamation League, the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America, the New England Council’s New Englander of the Year Award, and recipient of the Distinguished Bostonian from the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. In recognition of his contributions to the community, BCBSMA established the William C. Van Faasen Community Service Sabbatical Program. This program gives one employee per year a leave of absence to work for a charitable organization in the community for a period of three to six months. Van Faasen and his wife Jane have three children, sons John and Billy and daughter Elly. The Van Faasens are the proud grandparents of Henry, Teddy and James who live in Wenham with Bill and his wife, Kasie. Bill will turn 67 in August. Van Faasen holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Hope College, Michigan and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Michigan State University. Still very connected to his midwestern roots, and a true music-lover from Detroit, he now makes his home on the North Shore, where he is an avid gardener and enjoys nothing more than time with his family. 7 2015 Spirit of Golf Dinner Honoring William C. THE WORD ON BILL VAN FAASEN

Below are quotes and anecdotes supplied by a few of Bill Van Faasen’s friends and colleagues. These words provide insight into the man he is. I see similarities in how I met Mr William Van Faasen to that of the life-long relationship which started between Francis Ouimet and Eddie Lowery because Eddie, like myself, happened to be in the right place at the right time. As you would expect, I first met Mr. William Van Faasen on a golf course. I was a 15-year-old high school golfer waiting in line to caddie in a Senior Tour Pro-Am event being played at The Highlands Golf Club in Grand Rapids, Mich. Mr. Van Faasen insisted I call him “Bill”, so for the past 30 years, that is exactly what I have done. I think it’s a rare occurrence when we meet someone capable of making a profound long-term impact in nearly every aspect of our life. What I have come to realize is that I am one of the many people, just like you, who have been fortunate enough to see how Bill uses that unique ability to connect with people no matter what their golf handicap might be. It has been said that Mr. Francis Ouimet is considered America’s First Golf Hero and I wholeheartedly agree. But for me, Bill has always been my “Golf Hero” and I am excited to see a room full of Golf Heroes here tonight who live and inspire the future generations about what “The Spirit of the Game” really means. Russ Cunningham, Friend of Bill Van Faasen There is no one I know who better exemplifies the whole idea of “The Spirit of Golf.” As usual, you get it, and everyone else is the beneficiary. Have a great night. It’s an easy cause to support in every way. Bink Garrison, Friend of Bill Van Faasen Because of both Essex County Club and the Ouimet Fund, I have been able to chase my dreams of becoming a PGA Golf Professional. It was members like Mr. Van Faasen that fostered my love for both the game and the golf business. Without this experience, I am confident that I would not have developed such a passion for golf. I cannot think of anyone who could be more deserving of this award than Mr. Van Faasen. Throughout my time at Essex, I was lucky enough to have a great relationship with him, and it has continued well past my tenure at the club. I am still in good contact with him, and he continues to show a genuine interest in my career and personal growth. From the time I was a young bag room employee, Mr. Van Faasen has constantly taken a genuine interest in me. It is moving to see such a successful individual take the time to make an impact on someone like me. Mr. Van Faasen is a true representative of “The Spirit of Golf.” He is a man that shows extreme love for the game, and it rubs off on everyone around him. In addition to his strong love for the game, the extent in which he gives back to golf is unmatched. The generosity of people like Mr. Van Faasen and the entire Ouimet Fund is what has helped me become the young professional I am today. Sean Golden, PGA, Ouimet Alumnus 2013, Assistant Golf Professional, Augusta National GC and Interlachen CC When I first learned of this, I confess that I assumed it was simply yet another one of those honors folks seem to collect as they age. But boy was I wrong. I was well aware of your legacy in the Health Care industry, but I had no idea of your incredible inner city contributions. The tireless efforts you made, and the opportunities you created, speak volumes about your sense of fairness and your spirit of compassion. Congratulations on not just this latest award, but on a life well lived...one beyond yourself that clearly impacted and enriched others. Bryant Gumbel, Noted Television Broadcaster Bill Van Faasen is a great tenacious competitor and in every way the anchor of our team, BUT HE IS A GREATER GUY.”—Cary Jubinville, Lesley Cup Teammate and Past MGA President For the last 15 years, apparently not motivated by any personal gain or public recognition (Bill was never solicited, not did he have children in our program), but simply and purely in the spirit of the game, Bill has consistently, quietly and individually offered both financial support and personal encouragement to the local high school varsity golf program and to the young players who competed in the game through this program. He has provided inspiration and has been 2015 Spirit of Golf Dinner Honoring William C. Van Faasen 8

WORDS OF PRAISE FOR BILL VAN FAASEN a valued role model to my players. They have learned both that they represent a larger community and that, when the time comes, they will need to pay it forward. We are indebted to Bill and extremely grateful for his contributions to our teams. Jane D. McConnell, (just) Retired Varsity Golf Coach, Manchester Essex Regional High School As Captain of the 2010 Curtis Cup Team, I had the privilege of meeting Bill 2 years prior as we prepared for the event. His love for golf was obvious immediately and to my delight he had a heart for women’s golf. Hosting a USGA event takes major planning, foresight, and attention to detail. Bill knew that as he championed the idea of Essex hosting the Curtis Cup and then he made it happen. Bill is a true golf enthusiast and he shares those feelings by providing opportunities for others to benefit from the game. Bill, thanks for sharing and promoting your passion. Congratulations on this most deserving honor. Noreen Mohler, 2010 United States Curtis Cup Captain I am pleased to write this note on the occasion of William Van Faasen being honored by the Ouimet Fund and being recognized for his contributions to the game that we love so much. For years and years Bill has given so much in so many ways to the game of golf. Giving of his time, energies, and otherwise is and was occurring all the while as he was so very busy with his business career and devotion to his family. He is a most generous person who gives while expecting nothing in return except the knowing that he has done a good deed. He has the profound respect of his peers. James D. Patton, Permanent Trustee, Lesley Cup I am very excited that the Francis Ouimet Fund is honoring Bill Van Faasen for his commitment to golf and for the many years he has given back to the game. I first met Bill through mutual friends in Michigan. We have since become good friends and he is a person I respect very much. His commitment to the game is obvious, be it Chairing the Curtis Cup at Essex County Club or his involvement in many other golf associations and Societies. A story that many don’t know is that years ago Bill and his family took a young lad into their home. Bill helped the boy get a job in the bag room at The Detroit Golf Club for the summer. During this time he not only helped nurture the boy’s love for the game, but helped teach him the lessons of life and of life development. This boy, who became a friend of mine, went on to be the player of the decade (2000-2009) in Michigan. I tell this story because I knew this friend for many years before I learned that it was Bill who had helped him as a young boy. I had known Bill for many years as well and he had never once bragged or boasted about this fact. That is the kind of humble person Bill is. I am so grateful that a person such as Bill Van Faasen who does so much for others as well as the game of golf is being recognized by such a fine organization as the Ouimet Fund. I am honored to have Bill as a golfing buddy, but more importantly as a great friend. Robert J. Roehrig, DDS, Friend of Bill Van Faasen Who is Bill Van Faasen and why do we like and respect him? Is it because he is a loyal friend and a compassionate man? Is it because he is a charitable person and a devoted family man? Is it because he is a talented and respected business and community leader? Is it because he loves and is committed to the game of golf, having recently chaired the Curtis Cup at Essex County Club and having displayed personal prowess throughout the years by winning numerous events? Is it because he is an avid historian of the game, and a gentleman on and off the course? The answer is simple, it is yes to all of the above, but as important to me is that he is my dear friend, and I am thrilled that he is being deservedly recognized by the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund for all he has done for the game and his community. Peter Saputo, Friend of Bill Van Faasen

A PROGRAM EMERGES AND CONTINUES TO GROW This evening we celebrate a Boston where black and white business people work together. We also have a municipal golf course that is a jewel and about to host one of the state’s top championships. We have inner-city students who work in golf, and many have received substantial scholarships. And, we are about to couple much of this with a nationally-recognized program that will teach golf to inner-city kids who will move on to working in golf, receive a scholarship, and, hopefully, move into careers. It wasn’t always that way. And, tonight, we celebrate one of the key people who helped change it, and the groups that truly personified “Black and White Boston Coming Together” and “Black and White on Green.” In the 1980s Boston was coming off the divisive period of forced busing of the Seventies and there was little interaction between the black and white communities. Severe budget cuts basically eliminated maintenance of Boston’s William Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park. The state’s premiere Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund wanted to take a role in giving scholarships to inner-city Boston kids, but there were no jobs at the city courses that provided eligibility. And, there was a crying need to introduce golf to inner-city kids, but no way to deliver it. Black & White Comes Together The first hero here was Diddy Cullinane, a Boston philanthropist with indomitable energy who wanted to bring the disparate business communities together. In 1989 she started a program called “Black and White Boston Coming Together” that hosted a series of breakfasts and dinners that introduced the leaders of the black and white business worlds and political realms to each other. It worked, and created true cooperation and joint ventures, especially through a partner group, “The Business Collaborative.” The new President and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, William C. Van Faasen, was deeply involved. Major banks and insurance companies, law firms, construction firms, and retail giants such as Reebok and Staples all joined with minority businesses end emerging black professionals in new alliances. One of the great examples was a partnership by which Roxbury Technologies would recycle used printer cartridges for office products giant Staples.

The late Mayor Thomas Menino (fifth from left) accepts a check from philanthropist Diddy Cullinane (fifth from right) as part of the Boston Junior Golf Program.

Franklin Park and its Guardians Although not as well known, a group of golfers at William F. Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park were stepping up at about the same time. The “Franklin Park Guardians” fought to keep golf alive with their bare hands there, maintaining a four-hole course at their own expense, hoping someone would step in and help. Eventually, the City of Boston increased funding, and a joint effort of the Massachusetts Association and Flynn Golf developed an alliance to manage the property. A Tiger Comes to Boston and Starts Something New About that time, Wollaston Golf Club in Milton bid to host the 1992 USGA Junior Championship, and, the defending champion and new star that came to Milton was 16-yearold Tiger Woods. As part of the week’s festivities, Wollaston arranged to have Woods and his dad, Earl, conduct a free clinic to expose golf to the inner-city at Franklin Park. Approximately 400 kids came to it, surprising nearly everyone. One of the results the following year was a “summer camp” program the MGA ran there for the next few seasons. In 1997, the national First Tee program began. Black and White Goes on Green While all of this was emerging, the Black and White Program was taking off, and in 1993 decided to add a golf tournament. “Black and White on Green” was an instant success, as its format of pairing black and white businessmen together in foursomes provided a relaxed and comfortable way to socialize in a morning scramble event that was always followed by a luncheon featuring reggae music and more. Bill Van Faasen was its first Chairperson along with Co-Chairs, the late Archie Williams and Earl Tate. Many of the top companies in Boston were sponsors and 2015 Spirit of Golf Dinner Honoring William C. Van Faasen

PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE OF GOLF IN THE CITY OF BOSTON contributed prizes or “goodie package” gifts. A frequent participant and speaker was the new mayor Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino, a regular golfer at George Wright Golf Course. Menino saw the value of golf at the Boston courses, increased the maintenance, and built a sparkling new clubhouse at Franklin Park that became a superb site for events. The event also pointed out that there could also be great educational benefits for Boston youth through the Ouimet Fund, but the courses lacked the basic prerequisites of work eligibility found at private and other courses such as caddies, pro shop jobs, bag room and range help, etc. A Scholarship Program is Born And, so it came to be that Diddy Cullinane, representatives of the Franklin Park Guardians, and others met at the Ouimet Fund’s Golf House offices in Weston in 1995 to seek a creative way for Boston kids to become eligible for Ouimet Scholarships. Out of that meeting came one of the country’s most unique programs, the Franklin Park Caddie Scholars Program that is now known as the City of Boston Summer Golf Management Program. Mayor Menino immediately endorsed it, as did many of the golf organizations, and an announcement/photo shoot at City Hall kicked it off in 1996. The innovative program that followed was part of the City of Boston’s Two of Black and White on Green’s founding Summer Jobs Program. It was a seven -week, eight- hour per day paid fathers Earl Tate (left) and the late Archie Williams pose during an event. summer job at the two courses that included extra benefits such as English and math tutoring and golf instruction. At one point, as many as 140 students participated and the work included caddie instruction, caddying at benefit tournaments around the state, cleaning the course, etc. The first Ouimet candidates came in 1998, and since that time 100 students have received nearly $1 Million in Scholarship aid. Mayor Menino became a great proponent of the program, and for several years served as Honorary Chair of the annual Ouimet Banquet. Two of the students from it, Joe O’Malley and Andrew Bartlett, have served as the “Student Speaker” at the event. The Program has been recognized nationally as a model, including the Ouimet Fund receiving the Earl Woods Award from Golf Digest in 2000. For many years the Ouimet Fund has shot its Annual Report cover at Franklin Park, using a group of students from there to emphasize Ouimet diversity and the many jobs Ouimet Scholarships have at courses. The Program remains the centerpiece of the Ouimet Fund’s inner-city campaign which, tonight, will create its 15th endowed scholarship for inner-city youth. There will now be $2 Million of Ouimet endowments dedicated to inner-city scholarships. Two of the largest will be the Tiger Woods Foundation and William C. Van Faasen Awards. This is a special year for this Program that began 20 years ago. In 2015, the Ouimet Fund is awarding its millionth dollar to students from this program. The MGA will also recognize the great strides of Franklin Park and George Wright by holding its Four-Ball Championship at the two courses in May. And, even years after Black and White Boston Coming Together achieved its goals and was disbanded, Bill Van Faasen is still a great champion. As a member of the Massachusetts Golf Association Executive Committee, Bill is enthusiastic about revitalizing the MGA’s junior golf outreach efforts with the City of Boston through The First Tee of Massachusetts. It is the Ouimet Fund’s goal to work collaboratively with The First Tee and the MGA in the future to funnel these junior golfers to the Summer Golf Management Program and then on to Ouimet Scholarships. Bill is now additionally working toward these goals as a member of the Ouimet Fund’s Board of Directors. It’s all about bringing these groups together to help even more kids. And so, as we look back, the operative word has always been helping. Thanks to all who helped along the way, and especially, thank you, Bill. 15 2015 Spirit of Golf Dinner Honoring William C. BIGGER THAN THE GAME By Farrell Evans | ESPN.com To get to Franklin Park, a public course in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood, Francis Ouimet and a friend walked a mile from his home across the road from The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., to the streetcar line that took them to the Brookline Village, where they transferred to a Roxbury crossing car. It was 1906 and these were two teenage boys eager to play golf during the game’s infancy in the United States. At Roxbury Crossing, they changed to the Franklin Park car. At Franklin, they got off on the last streetcar and walked three quarters of a mile to the Franklin Park clubhouse. The son of poor immigrants, Ouimet learned the game on a three-hole course he devised with his brother, Wilfred. They used old balls and clubs that they found at The Country Club. At Franklin Park, a nine-hole course that opened in 1896, they could play as many as 54 holes a day during the summer. At The Country Club, Ouimet caddied for “Proper Bostonians” for 25 cents per round. In 1913, seven years after playing his first rounds at Franklin Park, Ouimet won the U.S. Open in front of these well-heeled scions of society at The Country Club. By defeating Harry Vardon and Ted Ray in an 18-hole playoff, Ouimet became the first amateur to win the Championship. A hundred years later it is still one of the greatest individual achievements in sports history and a seminal moment in the development of golf in America. Ouimet’s monumental victory over two of the game’s top players created a public demand in the U.S. for a game that was at the turn of the 20th century primarily the domain of the rich at private country clubs. A year after winning at Brookline, Ouimet won the first of his two Amateurs at Ekwanok in Manchester, Vt. His second win came in 1931 in Chicago. “I’m afraid some people won’t believe me,” Ouimet said years after his first Amateur win, “when I say that the greatest moment was winning my first Amateur Championship. “I never really had thought of myself as an Open champion but as a young fellow who was brash enough to think I could win the Amateur. That was the title I really aspired to.” Yet for all of Ouimet’s accomplishments as a player and an ambassador of the game, his most enduring legacy might be the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund, which was started in his honor in 1949 by the Massachusetts Golf Association to help caddies in the Boston and New England area attend college. In the organization’s 65-year history, it has awarded more than $28 million to some 5,000 students. For most athletes, their contributions to the game and the larger society end with their accomplishments on the field of play. Rarely are they able to leave something behind that future generations can put to good use for humankind. Forty-seven years after the Scholarship Fund was established, young Ellis Jones began riding his bike from his home in 2015 Spirit of Golf Dinner Honoring William C. Van Faasen

FRANCIS’ LEGACY LIVES FOR OVER 100 YEARS Roxbury to the same Franklin Park where Ouimet first played in 1906 to take part in the caddie program. Jones didn’t begin to learn about Ouimet until he started the program in 1999 as a part of The Fund’s efforts to attract inner-city youth to the organization. “The example of Ouimet shows that no matter who you are or what your background is you can always make an impact on the world and the lives of others,” Jones said. In 2006, when Jones (pictured with Woods) was a student at Elms College in Chicopee, Mass., he was given an opportunity through the fund to caddie for Tiger Woods during a practice round at the Deutsche Bank Championship in nearby Norton, Mass. Jones first met the 14-time major champion in 1992 at a clinic at Franklin Park, when Tiger was in town to play in a junior tournament. At the Deutsche Bank, they reminisced about those times before Woods had become the best player in the world. “It was like talking to one of my friends,” Jones said of working for Woods. But that brief encounter doesn’t come close to matching the lifelong bonds that Jones has developed through the scholarship fund. “Ouimet Scholars have a very long and connected network,” said the 28year-old Jones, who works for the Xerox Corporation in the unclaimed property division in the Boston area. “We all keep in touch with each other. I have had a chance to work with them in different settings all because we have this one love and passion. “For a lot of kids, the program not only gave them an outlet, but it gave them exposure to people through caddying that they never would have met otherwise. They were able to meet people on the golf course that gave them recommendations later on for jobs.” From his humble roots as a caddie who became one of the decorated amateurs in the history of the game, Ouimet went on to become a successful businessman. In 1951, he became the first American to be named a captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland. His stature earned him invitations at golf clubs all over the world. The “Proper Bostonians” he had come to know as a caddie at The Country Club were now his friends and acquaintances. Yet Ouimet never lost the humility, decency and genial nature that he learned while carrying golf bags for 25 cents. He is the embodiment of the virtues that he passed on to Ouimet scholars like Jones. Few if any of the players at the U.S. Amateur got their starts as caddies. Junior golf academies and college golf programs now churn out many of today’s best golf talents. A Ouimet Scholar is more likely to turn out like Jones than like Woods or Phil Mickelson. That’s why we still celebrate Francis Ouimet 100 years after he shocked the world, because his win was always bigger than golf. No one has been able to duplicate the national impact of Ouimet’s feat in 1913, but many have gone on because of his scholarship fund to become heroes to their communities and families.

ABOUT THE OUIMET FUND The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund was founded in 1949 by a group of friends of Francis Ouimet and the Massachusetts Golf Association. Since the day that he insisted that Eddie Lowery carry his bag in the 1913 U.S. Open, Mr. Ouimet was known for his interest in helping young people. The Ouimet Fund has continued that legacy proudly for over sixty-five years. Since 1949, over $28 Million in need-based college tuition assistance has been awarded to young people who have given at least two years of service to golf as caddies or in pro shop or course superintendent operations in Massachusetts. The Ouimet Scholarship is unique in that it is renewable for up to four years. Ouimet awards range from $1,500 to $15,000 per year, depending on need in our competitive evaluation process. The value of the award over four years can be $10,000 to $40,000, or more. Over 5,200 young people have received Ouimet Scholarships, and many have gone on to prestigious positions of leadership in business and professional careers. Ouimet Alumni also stay actively involved in The Fund. Several former presidents are past Scholarship winners, and there are five members of the current Board of Directors who are former Scholars. Alumni also participate in our Golf Marathon, serve as Ouimet Chairs at their home clubs, and help in many other ways. The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund is a 501(c) (3) organization. It is supported by contributions from Alumni, golfers, clubs, corporations and golf organizations throughout the country.

THE CENTENNIAL CAMPAIGN

Over one hundred years since Francis Ouimet’s U.S. Open victory, we celebrate the moment American golf was born, and Mr. Ouimet’s great contributions to golf and his legacy, the Ouimet Fund. Led by a Campaign Planning Committee, the goal of the Centennial Campaign: Investing in Lifetimes is to expand our financial resources by a minimum of $5 Million in order to reach an annual Scholarship total of $2 Million awarded, with an increase in inner-city awareness and aid. With a fantastic response from Friends of The Fund, the Campaign is well over the half-way mark at nearly $3.4 Million raised and 22 new Endowed Scholarships created!

MISSION STATEMENT

The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund is committed to providing need-based scholarship aid to students who have demonstrated a strong work ethic by having completed at least two years of service to golf. The Ouimet Fund rewards accomplishment through the competitive, renewable award. The Fund is dedicated to providing the golfing community with an opportunity to give back to golf and society by assisting youth in furthering their education. The Ouimet Fund also seeks to preserve the history of Francis Ouimet’s contributions to American golf.
