A Message from the President October, 2016 Dear Ouimet Fund Friends, The cover of our 2016 Annual Report shows a group of photos that depict Ouimet Scholars and many of the activities and programs we make available to them. We firmly believe that our Scholars become better citizens and think our ability to support with more than our substantial financial scholarships help make them successful. Those images also help me state this has been a tremendous year for the Ouimet Fund in many ways.
Scholarship Records
There is much great news to report, but none as special as the fact that we are increasing our scholarships by $150,000 (a total of 9%) to $1.85 Million. This gets us even closer to our Centennial Campaign goal of $2 Million in annual scholarships. While that is very rewarding to us and our many supporters, it is tempered by the fact that our applications have grown 45% over the past two years and Scholar need and tuitions continue to present daunting challenges. This year sees our total number of Scholars increasing from 394 to 452. We are, in a sense, a rapidly growing family and there are many more mouths to feed. We simply have to keep pushing our fundraising to meet the unmet needs of our students and families. We are a “need-based” scholarship fund which still places great value on helping those Scholars who may otherwise not be able to attend college unless they receive our help. Another important Campaign goal has been met as we are again proud to point to very strong increases in inner-city, female and minority students. The City of Boston Summer Golf Management Program at Franklin Park and George Wright Golf Courses is providing a great number of Scholars each year. This summer, we made an important step toward adding to our efforts by coordinating the fundraising for a caddie training program in Worcester that will develop future inner-city Scholars in coming years (see page 33). A key component of our growth has been the tremendous support of our member clubs and continued growth of our endowed scholarship program. We added 5 new endowed awards since our last Annual Report, and now have 133 permanently endowed awards which are funding approximately 30% of our annual scholarship total. One of the top moments of the year was our Endowed Scholarship Reception at Wellesley Country Club where Ouimet Alumnus and Trustee Peter Lynch ‘65 charmed the audience with stories of his formative years as a caddie. We also had a nice donor event in Florida arranged by Alumnus Larry Derito ’67 at Loxahatchee Club where Golf Channel’s Tim Rosaforte spoke about golf and our mission. We also exceeded our target of $5 Million in commitments for our Centennial Campaign and extend our great thanks to Development Chair Dick Reilly who was honored at our Banquet this spring along with fellow former President Terry Kennedy. As always, Ouimet Trustee and Alumnus Richard F. “Dick” Connolly, Jr. was an enormous supporter including a special matching gift challenge he lead, which was warmly received.
Event Highlights
This year had many highlights, including a wonderful Banquet at which we honored Tom Lehman. The audience really enjoyed the “living room format,” and the many steps we are taking to continue an efficient, dynamic and impactful program. We look forward to another great evening when we honor Nick Price at the Sheraton Boston Hotel on March 13, 2017. As stated above, the support of our member clubs is so important, and this year we had a first-time Club Relations outing at Pine Brook at which we shared many “best practices” with an enthusiastic group of Club Ouimet Chairs and Presidents. Our Bag Tag Program and the Centennial level continues to gather steam and sustain our mission. The Ouimet Golf Marathon, an annual flagship event continued to grow, raising over $300,000 for scholarships. Alumni and Annual Funds growth is important to our mission. We are always looking at new sources of

revenue, and social media-driven campaigns including Team Ouimet participation in the John Hancock Non-Profit Boston Marathon Program and the Falmouth Road Race Numbers for Non-Profits Program grow each year.
Arnold Palmer & Fred Thorne
The Ouimet Fund joins the world of golf in mourning the passing of Arnold Palmer. Mr. Palmer was involved with The Fund for nearly 20 years, thanks to Dick Connolly who worked as Mr. Palmer’s financial advisor and was a very close personal friend. We were also saddened by the passing of former Ouimet Fund President Fred Thorne. He played a great role in our history when we planned our move to our first Museum in Weston. I hope you can take the time to look at the full list of other supporters and friends we remember on page 64.
Organizational Strength
Greg Gailius speaks to the crowd at the Endowed
Strengthening and further engaging our Board continues to be a top priority. In the Reception at Wellesley Country Club. past year, we embarked on a targeted program that added several more Directors who bring broad credentials and skills. We completed a strategic study, re-energized our Board meetings with an emphasis on interactive sessions and have developed a Board Orientation Program that will reaffirm our goals and provide a roadmap to sustain our future. I owe special thanks to Vice President Jim Blue for helping us lead this important effort. We had an important first joint meeting of our Club Relations and Scholarship Committees which helped define issues and policies. I owe great thanks to Director of Scholarships & Donor Systems Michelle Edwards and Scholarship Chair/2nd Vice President Jim Moriarty for their very able guiding of the scholarship program in an unprecedented period of growth. We completed an attractive revision to our website and worked with our Westchester (NY) County counterparts to develop a new caddie training video that is available for use by all of our member clubs. We also made an important decision to transfer management of the Ouimet Memorial Tournament to the Massachusetts Golf Association (MGA) which will allow us to concentrate more on core fundraising programs and activities. The Board is ever mindful of expense control, and we are also pleased that we are maintaining a low expense ratio. Our core of volunteers are critical to our success and we owe them thanks. We have dedicated and passionate help with our club programs, applicant interviews, Golf Marathon, Annual Banquet, Ouimet Memorial Tournament, and so much more from these volunteers. I would like to thank our dedicated and talented staff of Bob, Colin, Danielle, Jackie, Michelle and Jeff who work throughout the year with all our constituents, across so many programs, to help make the above success possible. In closing, things continue to look strong for the Ouimet Fund and I feel even better that our continued efforts position us well for the future and ultimate long-term sustainability. Sincerely,
Gregory J. Gailius President, Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund Greg Gailius (r) with Nashawtuc CC President Bill Scheid at this year's Ouimet Society outing at Belmont CC.

he chart to the right illustrates how The Fund generated revenue during the most recently completed fiscal year 2016 (ending March 31, 2016). As you can see, Bag Tag and Endowed Scholarships remain a critical piece of the annual revenue. Events such as the Annual Banquet and golf outings remain healthy line items for Fiscal Year 2016 and there has been some excellent growth of and board commitment to Team Ouimet (which includes the Golf Marathon, Boston Marathon, Falmouth Road Race, etc.) and Unrestricted Donations (Annual Fund, Alumni Fund, Campaign, etc.). The Fund is continuing to seek ways to grow all revenue areas.

he chart to the right clearly illustrates the marked and significant progress The Fund has made not only in lowering, but maintaining, its Administrative Expense Ratio. The ratio is a popular marker used by potential donors and is commonly regarded in the non-profit arena as a pertinent and critical metric. It is oftentimes a determining factor in the decision-making process of newer donors concerned with the overall health and vitality of an organization. In general terms, the lower the number the better and any figures below 15% earn top ratings on many online sites. The Fund is proud of it’s commitment to maintaining a low ratio and credits the organization’s small staff and fully volunteer Board of Directors.

Lehman & Student Speaker Anastos Wow Ouimet Banquet
om Lehman, a former leading money winner on both the PGA TOUR and Champions Tour, British Open champion and member of the victorious 1999 Ryder Cup team at The Country Club, was the guest speaker and honored with the 19th Francis Ouimet Award for Lifelong Contributions to Golf at the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund’s 66th Annual Banquet in front of a blue ribbon audience of 1,100 on Monday, April 11 at the Sheraton Boston Hotel. The Banquet, which has become the largest annual golf dinner in America, was presented, again, by The Connolly Group – Morgan Stanley. A special highlight of the evening was the inspirational talk of student speaker Dan Anastos. “Our Boston audience was thrilled to hear from Tom Lehman and our Master of Ceremonies, David Marr III. We used a new “living room” format for the Lehman speaking segment in which Dave Marr ‘interviewed’ Mr. Lehman. The audience really liked it and the format helped us conclude the evening in record time which is our goal,” said Ouimet Fund President Gregory J. Gailius.

Mr. Gailius went on to explain that, “a special highlight was hearing Tom speak of what he describes as his greatest week in golf: the 1999 Ryder Cup which was held at The Country Club in nearby Brookline. That Ryder Cup will live forever in Boston golf lore and Tom’s role as first off and starting the Sunday comeback is truly
unforgettable. “In addition to that, Tom is widely regarded as one of the game’s ‘good guys’, and is so dedicated to charity, his faith and community service. He was a wonderful Ouimet Award honoree.” In addition to his many PGA TOUR and Champions Tour victories, Lehman has represented the United States six times in international competition, appearing on three Ryder Cup (1995, 1997 and 1999) teams and three President Cup (1994, 1996, and 2000) squads. Captain Ben Crenshaw chose Lehman to lead off singles play in the 1999 Ryder Cup at the Country Club in Brookline. Lehman responded by defeating Lee Westwood 3&2 and igniting the USA’s historic comeback. He went on to become Ryder Cup Captain in 2006, a Vice Captain in 2010, and was Vice Captain of the 2016 Ryder Cup Team at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota. Mr. Lehman is a Minnesota native. He is highly regarded for his numerous charitable involvements and deep religious conviction and has been honored with the Payne Stewart and Byron Nelson Awards. Master of Ceremonies Dave Marr III is the Golf Channel Champions Tour host and had an excellent rapport with Mr. Lehman which was very well received by the Boston audience.
Tom Lehman’s 1996 season was one of dominance as he won the British Open’s Claret Jug at Royal Lytham & St. Anne’s.

D
aniel Anastos, who worked on the course superintendent’s crew at Larry Gannon Municipal Golf Couse in Lynn, Massachusetts and was a senior at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, was the Student Speaker of the 2016 Ouimet Banquet. Dan told a very emotional story of losing his Dad at an early age and how his mother did so much to hold his family together. Dan started working at Gannon on the course superintendent crew at age 14 and spoke of how it and superintendent Steve Murphy changed his life, leading him to the fine program at the UMass Stockbridge School of Agriculture. Dan had several outstanding internships and is now working in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho at Gozzer Ranch Golf and Lake Club. He graduated with a 3.2 GPA and a Bachelor’s Degree in Turf Science and Management from UMass in May. He is believed to be the first Ouimet Student Banquet speaker to come from the course superintendent ranks.

T
he Richard F. Connolly Distinguished Service Award was established in 2000 in honor of Mr. Connolly, a Ouimet Scholarship Alumnus, former President, and current Board Member and Trustee who has proudly served the Ouimet Fund for over 40 years. For the past 38 years he has been the Chairman of the Francis Ouimet Memorial Tournament. He has also underwritten the production of the Richard F. Connolly, Sr. Trophy, the Ouimet Memorial’s permanent trophy that is one of the most unique in golf. Mr. Connolly has been the driving force in starting the Francis Ouimet Lifelong Contributions to Golf Award Annual Banquets, and helping arrange the sponsorship of Morgan Stanley and other companies. He has also established an endowed Ouimet Scholarship in his family’s name and helped The Fund in many other ways. The Connolly Award is presented annually in his honor.
2016 Connolly Award Co-Recipients Dick Reilly and Terry Kennedy
T
he Ouimet Fund was proud to honor Dick Reilly and Terry Kennedy for their combined contributions in leading The Fund though its Centennial period. Mr. Reilly (2010 – 2012) and Mr. Kennedy (2012 – 2014) served as Ouimet Fund Presidents in the years leading up to, and through, the Ouimet Centennial. They were Co-Chairs of the Centennial, with Terry being President and involved in every activity during the 2012 – 2013 period. Both were very involved in the highly successful Centennial Campaign, which Dick chaired and oversaw until it recently reached fruition with over $5 Million raised and pledged. It was truly a very important time in Ouimet history, and their combined contributions were tremendous Connolly Award and helped lay a foundation for many years to Recipients come. Terry Kennedy and Dick Reilly flank Dick Connolly. During those years, the Centennial and 2000 Charles J. Fox its celebration was used as a vehicle to make great investments in technologies, people, Dennett W. Goodrich fundraising programs, communications, and more. We upgraded the website, put a focus on Mark Robinson our social media presence, produced a new TV PSA, created the Centennial Bag Tag Program, 2001 Andrew Curcio created a campaign geared to Alumni and, most importantly, created the Centennial Campaign Wendell Fitch that has raised $5 Million, including 30 new endowed scholarships. Dick and Terry both created Richard R. Stimets endowed scholarships and sold, or helped sell, many more. The Campaign has already helped 2002 Raymond Faxon give us a couple of large annual additions to our scholarship awards, and is getting us closer to 2003 William C. Foley, Sr. the dream of $2 Million in annual awards. 2004 Walter E. Lankau, Jr. Other new initiatives were the Team Ouimet concept with Ouimet participation in Boston 2005 Peter Maich Marathon and other active events, and a major commitment to inner-city Scholars, with a big 2006 Mark Frost increase in Boston outreach, etc. We upgraded our financial and scholarship programs which 2007 Tom Martin now run so smoothly. We also created many communications vehicles and initiatives which 2008 Anne Marie Tobin increased awareness of The Fund. 2009 Ted Hansberry The Centennial Celebration itself saw us host and develop many events which rightfully 2010 Peter S. Lynch recognized and promoted, both locally and nationally, Mr. Ouimet’s tremendous impact on 2012 Ted Highberger American golf and the lasting legacy of the Ouimet scholarship program. 2013 Arnold Palmer Dick and Terry’s efforts were untiring. Dick is a member of Brae Burn Country Club and The 2015 Richard J. Barrett Bay Club at Mattapoisett and a retired attorney and investment executive. Terry is a member at 2016 Terry Kennedy Wollaston Golf Club and a Director at RSM US LLP. Dick and his wife, Kathy, are Ouimet Society Dick Reilly Lifetime Members and live in Needham. They are parents of four children. Terry and his wife, Kathy, are also Ouimet Society Lifetime Members and live in Milton. They are also parents of four children. 2016 ANNUAL REPORT

Club Relations Program
T
he Ouimet Fund is thankful for the more than 60 years of support from its generous clubs, their staffs and memberships, who are always committed to our organization’s mission. The thousands of members across the state who annually make up Ouimet’s largest program continue to be a key to the scholarship records. In addition to their personal and collective financial support, the clubs each play a role in being the final links to promoting the Scholarship opportunity to young people who are searching for help in funding their college education.
Bag Tag Program
Each year, The Fund commits that 100% of all dollars raised from the Bag Tag Ouimet Chairs attended The Fund’s inaugural Club Relations golf Program goes directly to annual scholarships. This important tradition continues outing at Pine Brook CC. to be a partnership with our 75 supporting clubs that allows The Fund to make such a tangible impact. We encourage any club that would like to get involved in this program to contact the Ouimet Fund office. There are two “levels” of the Bag Tag Program that clubs participate in each season – the Sponsor Bag Tag Program and the Ouimet 100 (Centennial) Bag Tag Program.
Ouimet 100 Program
This program, which opened in 2013, offers clubs the opportunity to distinguish themselves through an increased level of support. Nearly 30 clubs have now joined this program with an increased per member taxdeductible donation ($75) and a five year commitment to reach $100 per donation. These upgraded “permanent” metal tags are intended to stay on the bags for five years and highlight the level of support with the name of the respective club engraved behind the iconic image of Francis and Eddie. When visiting these clubs, you will also notice a beautiful engraved statuette of Francis Ouimet and Eddie Lowery on display, which is one of the ways The Fund is able to say 'thank you' and promote their leadership support.
Sponsor Program
Members at these clubs make a fully tax-deductible donation through their club office ($60) and these donors are recognized with annual plastic Bag Tags that they proudly display. Many thanks go out to the NEPGA Professionals and their staffs for their critical assistance in distributing tags on the bags each April.
Ouimet Chairs & Club Leadership
We thank the individual Ouimet Chairs who work tirelessly throughout the calendar year to help maximize this great partnership between their club and the Ouimet Fund. Ouimet Chairs are instrumental in facilitating the Bag Tag Program in conjunction with the Head Professionals and the General Managers (and their staffs). They ensure that the provided Scholar photo plaques are hung prominently each spring, post Scholarship recipient news in club communications, recruit Golf Marathon participants, and encourage the young golf employees to apply for our scholarship opportunities. Ouimet Chairs John McKenna (Brae Burn CC) and Mark Side by side with the Ouimet Chairs, any club representative is encouraged to Lallak (Woodland GC) with Brae Burn President Rick Fahey take an active role in enhancing these programs, driving the kids to Ouimet.org to at the 2016 Club Relations Outing. apply, and even participating in the applicant interview sessions throughout the spring. Those who are involved continue to comment how rewarding it is to see, first-hand, the scholarship process come full circle.
Caddie Training Video
The Ouimet Fund has always been proud to support caddie programs throughout the state, whether they be well-established or newly introduced. Thanks to our friends at the Westchester Golf Association, we offer at Ouimet.org, a dynamic new training video for the convenience of supporting clubs and individuals who wish to learn more about caddying and the Ouimet Fund scholarship opportunities. Ouimet Chair of the Year Award
T
he Ouimet Chair serves in a variety of capacities at the approximately 100 Massachusetts clubs that actively support the Ouimet Fund. Ouimet Chairs coordinate sales of the Ouimet Bag Tags at each club, which is The Fund’s most important fundraising source. They may help in the development of caddie programs, recruit young workers to apply for the Ouimet Scholarship, interview prospective applicants and arrange for their club to be an interview site. Ouimet Chairs may also help in a variety of other fundraising roles, including recruiting Lifetime Members of the Ouimet Society, introducing prospects to The Fund who might endow scholarships or make other major gifts, arranging for their club to participate in the Golf Marathon and the Annual Banquet, or hosting events.

At 2012 William L. Healy, M.D. - Concord & Eastward Ho! The Ridge Club, he has been a key advocate to strengthen and grow 2013 Jim Moriarty - Mount Pleasant the caddie program, which consists of 50-60 local high school and 2014 Jack McDaniel - Worcester college students every summer. With the tremendous commitment 2015 Bill Kelleher - Pocasset from The Ridge Club staff, particularly Jay Askew and Bob Travers, 2016 Frank Trapasso - The Ridge Club coupled with the club’s ownership group prioritizing the effort, Frank’s pride shines through whenever he speaks of those kids. Frank was invited to serve on a panel of three Ouimet Chairs at the inaugural Ouimet Chair/President outing at Pine Brook in May. He spoke of how both the Ouimet fundraising and scholarship opportunities work in lockstep at his club. The Ridge Club, a long-time Bag Tag supporter, is also consistently one of our top five Golf Marathon teams and scholarship recipient clubs since Frank has taken over as Ouimet Chair. For the past several years, he has brought the caddies and members together for a golf tournament and cookout followed by an informational session on the Ouimet Scholarship Fund where the parents of the young caddies are invited to join and take home this information. “We are thrilled to honor Frank for his consistent and passionate efforts to make an impact on as many young people as he can, both at his clubs and across the state. We wouldn’t be surprised to see many of our other Ouimet Chairs who were at our Club Relations outing this summer, implement some of his concepts at their own club. He has truly created a partnership between the club members, the staff, the young workers Frank (center) with Bob Walters and Paul Graveline of and the Ouimet Fund,” said The Fund’s Club Relations Chair, Duncan Gratton. 24th Annual Ouimet Golf Marathon Tedesco Father and Son Lead Ouimet Marathon
M
ichael Zmetrovich and his 16-year-old son, Oliver, played 136 holes of alternate shot golf and raised a total of $26,672 to make Tedesco Country Club the top club in the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund’s 24th Golf Marathon on August 10. The 32 participating clubs and organizations raised a total of $313,000. The 2016 event, which is believed to be the highest fundraising golf marathon in the U.S. this year, brought the total raised since the event’s inception in 1993 to nearly $5.6 Million. In Ouimet Marathon history, 965 players have played 121,712 holes – an average of 126 holes each per year.
Great Performances
The Ouimet Fund is proud to report that the top three performing clubs had Ouimet Alumnus involvement. Mr. Zmetrovich is a Ouimet Scholarship Alumnus and the Ouimet Chair at Tedesco and had also been in charge of the fundraising for the club in the Marathon. This is his 11th time playing in the event and second with Oliver, a St. John’s Prep junior. Oyster Harbors club finished second in fundraising with $24,450. Jeff Brookhart, an assistant golf professional at the club, and Ouimet Alumnus, played 216 holes and teamed up with Ouimet Chair and Fund Director, Steve Demirjian with the summer fundraising. Chris Wilson, a Ouimet Scholar and sophomore at the University of South Carolina, played 153 holes and Frank Trapasso and Bob Travers coordinated The Ridge Club’s fundraising towards a third place finish. Severe storms had been forecast but were limited to two heavy downpour periods that most of the field played through. “We dodged some serious potential weather. The players were able to get in a lot of holes and there was some tremendous fundraising to support them. We greatly appreciate all of their great efforts in making this another outstanding Golf Marathon for the Ouimet Fund,” said Greg Gailius, Ouimet Fund President. Brian Golden and Trevor Doe, who represented Winchester Country Club, played together and both completed 252 holes to claim most holes. It was the 48-year-old Golden’s 23rd time in the Ouimet Marathon and the sixth time he has won the total holes title. Mr. Doe was playing for his third time. The team of Ouimet Alumnus Michael Zmetrovich and his son, Oliver, lead the fundraising total while representing Team Tedesco. 2016 ANNUAL REPORT

The Denny Goodrich Honorary Ouimet Alumnus Award
T
he Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund renamed its “Honorary Alumnus Award” after Denny Goodrich when he retired from the Ouimet Fund’s Board of Directors in 2009 after 37 years of service. Mr. Goodrich, of Dedham Country and Polo Club, was the inaugural recipient of the award in 2003 and also the Ouimet Fund’s Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Distinguished Service Award’s awardee in its debut year of 2000. For 13 years, he served as the Vice Chair of the Ouimet Fund’s Annual Banquets. He was Ouimet President from 1990-1992. “Denny is the epitome of a Ouimet Alum, and this is a very small way to always remember all he has done for the Fund. His contributions have been immense,” said then Ouimet Fund President Richard J. Barrett when the award was re-named in his honor in 2009.
Joe Onstott – 2016 Recipient The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund’s Alumni Committee awarded its 2016 Denny Goodrich Ouimet Honorary Alumnus Award to Ouimet Director Joe Onstott. Mr. Onstott has been a member of the Ouimet Board since 2006. He and his wife, Patricia Campbell, have also been long-time members of the Ouimet Society and Lifetime Members since 1997. Mr. Onstott has also hosted a charitable outing – the Onstott Invitational – for the past 31 years. It has named the Ouimet Fund as one of its charitable beneficiaries many times. In 2008, the Onstott family chose to change its focus to have its fundraising dedicated to a new Ouimet scholarship it created in honor of Joe’s son, Kevin, who was killed working on a golf course superintendent crew in North Carolina in 2004. In 2010, the Onstott Invitational began a program to fund two additional new endowed scholarships, one in honor of David Page and a second in honor of John Watt, both of whom had passed away. The event continues to fund Joe Onstott the Kevin Onstott Award and, this year, changed its format to be a small corporate field. The Kevin Onstott Scholarship is for a Ouimet Scholar who attends North Carolina State University, Methodist University or other worthy Ouimet Scholars. Over the years, Mr. Onstott has served on several Ouimet committees including the Banquet, Development and Human Resources/ Compensation. His Onstott Associates is a premier executive search firm. “Joe Onstott has been a great contributor to the Ouimet Fund in so many ways over the Honorary Alumnus years. He is passionate in his efforts with the Onstott Invitational and the three endowed scholarships it has created will help Ouimet Scholars for many years. He and Pat have also Award Recipients been attendees at all our events and strong players in our outings. I know that they are 2003 Denny Goodrich proud that their names are on all three of our Ouimet Society outing trophies. They are 2004 Dick Foley also continually trying to recruit new donors and supporters to The Fund. We are proud to 2005 Jimmy Noris recognize Joe with the Goodrich Award in recognition of the great spirit he shows in his 2006 John MacKinnon support,” said Greg Gailius, Ouimet Fund President. The Award was presented at the Ouimet 2007 Jack Neville Annual Meeting at Nashawtuc Country Club. The Onstotts are members of Brae Burn Country 2008 Jim & Lois Gaquin Club, Woods Hole Golf Club and Jupiter Hills Country Club. 2009 Dave Adamonis, Sr. The “Honorary Alumnus” designation seeks to acknowledge that there are many people 2010 Mike Haberl, Rick Johnson & who have been important to the Ouimet Fund and/or the game that either did not need Ed Walsh assistance or did not apply for assistance when they went to college. Each year, the Alumni 2011 Walt Lankau Committee conducts a nominating process with the Ouimet Directors, Trustees and Alumni 2012 Phil Psaros Committee including requesting basic information and a paragraph or so on the merits of 2013 Bob Travers, Jr. the individual being nominated. The “service to golf” or great involvement with the game 2014 Peter Maich could be as a volunteer, as their career, or possibly as a competitor. The candidate must have 2015 Terry Carleton been generous in their support of the Ouimet Fund, either by contributing financially or by 2016 Joseph Onstott volunteer or exceptional professional service.

or 45 years, The Ouimet Society has been offering its members access to special events and outings. This year, Lifetime and Annual Society Members were hosted by two of the finest venues in Massachusetts with Outings at Historic Belmont Country Club in June and then down to The Ridge Club in Sandwich in late September. The Ouimet Society not only gets you access to these fine courses and a personalized bag tag, but puts you together with other great supporters of the Ouimet Fund.
Ouimet Society Outing at Belmont CC
After hosting the PGA Tour’s Senior Players Championship in 2015, Belmont welcomed the Ouimet Society in 2016. The course proved to be a great test of golf for both groups. Although there was one winner in 2015 (Bernhard Langer), all Ouimet Society Members felt like winners at the The group of (l to r) Garry and Janet Bean and Julie and John Blassick conclusion of the event in 2016. There, everyone on hand was able to hear pose with the Scheft Trophy after winning gross & net at the Ouimet from current Scholar Jennifer Barry and the impact the Ouimet Fund has had Society Outing at Belmont CC in June. on her life. Jennifer is a senior nursing student at Quinnipiac University. You will enjoy reading a message from Jennifer on page 31. Ouimet Society/NEPGA Pro-Am at The Ridge Club
The Ouimet Society headed south to beautiful Cape Cod for the Fall Outing at The Ridge Club. Here, Society members were paired with golf professionals from across the state, playing in groups of five. Four golfers would not have been enough where everyone was not only competing against the rest of the field, but had to deal with the challenging course, and the fall elements (wind, drizzle) that Mother Nature had offered up on this day. Again, win or lose, everyone had the pleasure of hearing from Lindsey Maello who is a current scholar in her junior year at Stonehill College. Francis Ouimet Memorial Tournament Naumec Makes Most of Second Chance in Winning Ouimet Memorial
T
he 49th Francis Ouimet Memorial Tournament visited Cape Cod for the first time in 2016, recorded tremendous golf at Hyannisport Club and Oyster Harbors Club, and saw Matt Naumec win the prestigious amateur invitational tournament. The Tournament started off with an amazing 21 rounds under par the first day at Hyannisport. Fourteen-year-old Michael Thorbjornsen of Nashawtuc Country Club lead that charge and notched five birdies and an eagle enroute to a 66 and the firstround lead. Earlier in the year, the young sensation won the national Drive, Chip and Putt competition at Augusta National Golf Club. Matt Naumec of GreatHorse showed why he is one of the best players in Massachusetts as he carded a five-under par 67 at the second round at Oyster Harbors Club to grab a three shot lead going to the final round. Good overall play continued as the two first rounds saw 41 players with total scores of four-over par or better make the Championship Division cut. Ouimet Memorial Champions Julia Ford (Women’s Division), Matthew Naumec In the final round at Woodland Golf Club, Naumec made a (Championship Division) and Joe Walker (Lowery Senior Division) after the tremendous downhill 20 footer for birdie on the club’s 16th hole completion of Friday’s round at Woodland Golf Club. to break open a see-saw encounter and went on to a three shot victory. Naumec finished with a one-over par 73 and a six under 209 total. The final round is always played at 6,721 yard Woodland Golf Club, Mr. Ouimet’s home course. Naumec had also had the lead going into the final round Championship Division 71 72 72 215 of the 2015 Ouimet, but fell to second when Peter French Matthew Naumec GreatHorse 69 67 73 209 birdied 8 of the last Damon Salo Bretwood GC (NH) 72 70 70 212 10 holes. Lowery Senior Division
In the Eddie Lowery (Senior) Division, Joe Walker of Dennis Pines Golf Course also showed he could make up for past misfortune as he closed with a 75 for a 219 total and a three shot victory over Dave Houghton of The Captains. Like Naumec, Walker led going into the final round in 2015 only to lose to close friend Kevin Carey. Mr. Walker also lost in a playoff in the 2013 Ouimet. The 60-year-old home heating oil company owner described the final round as “a grind,” and greatly credited runner-up Dave Houghton.
Women’s Division
Julia Ford of Cyprian Keyes survived a threehole playoff to win the Women’s Division, adding to the title she also took in 2014. She said she “struck it beautifully,” as she hit 17 of 18 greens in regulation but struggled a bit with distance control Cynthia Wilcox, a Ouimet Director and daughter on the greens. The late Arnold Palmer served as Honorary Chair of the Tournament from 2000-2016. The Ouimet Fund is making plans for the celebration of the 50th playing of the Ouimet Memorial in 2017.

Ouimet to Transfer Management of the Ouimet Memorial Tournament to MGA
T
he Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund has announced that it will transfer management of the Ouimet Memorial Tournament to the Massachusetts Golf Association (MGA). “This has been a difficult, but the correct decision for the Ouimet Fund. We have had 49 wonderful years with the Ouimet Memorial Tournament, but the expectations and needs of tournament management today are much more than our small staff can handle. We only do one major competitive golf tournament a year, and feel the event and the field will be much better served with the MGA’s great team managing it. The Ouimet Fund will be able to concentrate on fundraising events like the Ouimet Golf Marathon, and our Club Relations and major gifts efforts which are much closer to our core mission of supporting our Scholars,” said Ouimet Fund President Greg Gailius. Director Dick Connolly has been the Ouimet Memorial Tournament Chair for the (L to R) MGA President Tom Bagley, Ouimet President Greg past 38 years and fully supports this change. FRANCIS OUIMET SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The Ouimet Trophies The Ouimet Memorial Tournament began in 1968, one year after the death of Mr. Ouimet. The trophies for the Francis Ouimet Memorial Tournament are amongst the most unique in American golf and are kept on permanent display in the William F. Connell Golf Museum. Richard F. Connolly, Sr. Trophy The trophy for the Championship Division was inspired by the Silver Club display at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland. The putter in the center belonged to Francis Ouimet. Ouimet’s opponents used the flanking clubs, or ones similar to those shown, when he won the historic playoff for the 1913 U.S. Open. On the left is a Harry Vardon type brassie and on the right is a Ted Ray “Mills-type” putter. All were gifts to the Ouimet Fund by Dr. Gary Wiren. The silver golf balls hanging from the club are inscribed with the year of each tournament and the champion’s name. The Champion is also presented with a silver ball and a stand on which to display it, and a photographic reproduction of the trophy with the dates, courses and his daily scores inscribed. The trophy was donated to the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund by Richard F. Connolly, Jr. in memory of his father, who died in 1991. Richard F. Connolly, Jr. is a Ouimet Alumnus who served as President of The Fund from 1981-84. He has been Chair of the Ouimet Memorial since 1979. Lowery Trophy The Ouimet Memorial Tournament started a Senior Division in 1999 to celebrate The Fund’s 50th Anniversary, and named it after Eddie Lowery, Mr. Ouimet’s caddie in the legendary 1913 U.S. Open. The permanent trophy is a magnificent 21-inch bronze reproduction of the famed picture of Francis Ouimet and Eddie Lowery. Renowned sculptor Bob Pack of Houston, Texas, through a special licensing agreement with the Ouimet Fund, designed it. Mr. Pack contributed the statue for which a seven-inch permanent base was made. The annual winner of the Lowery Division is presented with a nine-inch version of the statue, which Mr. Pack also sculpted. Women’s Division Trophy The Ouimet Memorial Women’s Division was begun in 2004. The trophy is a classic center piece glass bowl on a wooden base and the winner receives a smaller version.
The Fund Remembers Arnold Palmer
T
he Ouimet Fund joins the world of golf in mourning the passing of Arnold Palmer. Mr. Palmer was involved with The Fund for nearly 20 years, thanks to the efforts of Ouimet Trustee and Alumnus Richard F. “Dick” Connolly, Jr. who worked as Mr. Palmer’s financial advisor and was a very close personal friend.
Palmer Launched Ouimet “New Era”
The “new era” of Ouimet Fund Banquets began in 1997 when Arnold accepted Mr. Connolly’s invitation to become the Banquet’s guest speaker and first recipient of the Francis Ouimet Award for Lifelong Contributions to Golf. Mr. Palmer’s appearance helped bring the dinner and the Ouimet Fund to a new level as 1,400 guests were on hand. That Banquet was also the first time The Fund created an endowed scholarship from the proceeds, and Mr. Palmer selected his late father, Deacon Palmer, as the named honoree. The Deacon Palmer Award has been presented annually to a Ouimet Scholar studying to be a golf professional or course superintendent, as Deacon Palmer was, and Mr. Palmer wrote to the recipient to extend his congratulations each year. Mr. Palmer at the Boston Harbor golf ball shoot that launched the 2013 Centennial Over the next few years, the Ouimet Banquet secured its Gala festivities. position as the biggest golf dinner in the U.S., and Mr. Palmer frequently helped recruit subsequent honorees of the evenings. Two years later, Messrs. Connolly and Palmer hooked up again when Mr. Connolly sponsored a Boston Pops Concert during the Ryder Cup that honored Mr. Palmer’s 70th birthday. The event created a $100,000 addition to the Deacon Palmer Scholarship.
Arnold’s Continuous Ouimet Help
In 2000, Mr. Palmer stepped into a new role with Ouimet. He succeeded Gene Sarazen, who died in 1999, as Honorary Chair of the Francis Ouimet Memorial Tournament, The Fund’s premier invitational event. Mr. Sarazen, who had been a close friend of Francis Ouimet, had been Honorary Chair since the inception of the Tournament in 1968. In 2011, Mr. Palmer agreed to be the Honorary Chair of the Ouimet Centennial. With Arnold on board, The Fund was able to ask the other prior Banquet honorees and some special friends to be Centennial Ambassadors. The cycle was completed when Mr. Palmer agreed to be presented with the 2013 Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Distinguished Service Award at The Fund’s Centennial Gala. There were 2,100 guests on hand – the largest ever for a golf banquet in the United States. He was joined on stage by Golf Channel’s Rich Lerner, the Master of Ceremonies, Peter Jacobsen and Mark Frost, the author of The Greatest Game Ever Played, and Bill Paxton, the director of the movie of the same name. Finally, The Ouimet Fund is extremely grateful that Mr. Palmer had been a friend to Dick Connolly and our mission. We were proud to present the Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Distinguished Service Award to Arnold Palmer, who as much as any other player ever, embodied so much of what Francis Ouimet was to American golf. Ouimet Trustee Richard F. Connolly, Jr. presents the Distinguished Service Award to his friend. 2016 ANNUAL REPORT

Endowed Scholarship Reception
T
he Fund hosted its 14th Annual Investing in Lifetimes Reception on June 22 at Wellesley Country Club. Nearly 200 Scholars and Alumni met endowed scholarship creators and their families – our largest group ever! This year’s speaker was Alumnus and Trustee Peter Lynch ’65 who had caddied at Brae Burn Country Club in Newton as a teen and received the Ouimet Scholarship throughout his four years at Boston College. Mr. Lynch shared stories of his experiences working in golf – his first job before embarking on a renowned career at Fidelity Investments. After graduating from Boston College and the Wharton School of Business, he went on to become Portfolio Manager of Fidelity’s Magellan Fund for 13 years, where it became the largest and best-performing mutual fund in the world. Mr. Lynch was the principal speaker at The Fund’s Annual Banquet in 1995. He has been a major donor to Ouimet initiatives and received the Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Distinguished Service Award in 2010.
Scholar and Penn State PGM Student Joshua Christopher ’17 spoke of his experiences working in golf and his dream to become a golf professional.

Centennial Campaign Crossing The Finish Line
L
ed by a dedicated Campaign Planning Committee, the Centennial Campaign: Investing in Lifetimes officially kicked off in November of 2012. Our goal over the past four years had been to expand our financial resources by a minimum of $5 Million in order to reach an annual Scholarship total of $2 Million awarded, with an increase in inner-city awareness and aid. With a fantastic response from Friends of The Fund, the Campaign is officially complete with $5 Million raised and pledged with over 30 new endowed scholarships created! We are proud to now have 18 endowed scholarships for inner-city students.
Through the Centennial Campaign, our goals were to:
• Expand Scholarships for Inner City and Minority Youth • Increase Annual Scholarships • Increase Endowed Scholarships
Expanding Inner-City Outreach
As part of the Centennial Campaign, the Ouimet Fund has established partnerships with inner-city organizations and high schools to increase awareness of The Fund’s mission and advocacy to young people and families who need help overcoming the financial barriers to higher education.
Boston and Worcester
Since 1998, The Fund has awarded over $1.2 Million in Scholarships to 120 participants in the City of Boston’s Summer Golf Management Program. The Ouimet Fund was proud to add to its Boston inner-city Scholar initiative this year as it played a key role in helping re-launch an inner-city caddie program at Worcester’s Green Hill Golf Course (see following page).
Ouimet Alumnus Larry Derito ’67 and Golf Channel’s Tim Rosaforte spoke at a Ouimet reception at The Loxahatchee Club in Florida in February. Here, they are flanked by Executive Director Bob Donovan and President Greg Gailius.

Ouimet Supports Worcester Inner City Caddie Program
T
he Ouimet Fund was proud to add to its Boston inner-city Scholar initiative this year as it played a key role in helping re-launch an innercity caddie program at Worcester’s Green Hill Golf Course. “A goal of our Centennial Campaign was to grow Ouimet inner-city partipation, and we saw the Green Hill program as a wonderful way to start young people in caddying and developing a path to eventually becoming Ouimet Scholars,” said Ouimet Fund President Greg J. Gailius.
Program Re-Energized
Mr. Gailius went on to explain that Green Hill golf professional Matthew Moison had developed a fine program that gained extra visibility when then Holy Cross sophomore Julia McCarthy “stole the show” from established stars as Student Speaker at the 2013 Ouimet Centennial Gala. Miss McCarthy credited the Green Hill program with enormous help for her impoverished family, but it was cancelled not long after that when a federally-funded program ended. Mr. Moison and Ouimet Fund Development Consultant Duffy Brent worked for two years to develop a grant proposal to re-start the program for three years. Several major foundations in the Worcester area committed fund to launch the first two years and nine community based organizations partnered with the project in recruiting potential caddies and transporting them. Ouimet Director Bill Kelleher of Worcester was very instrumental in the campaign. The new program enjoyed a successful start with 15 participants this year. None had ever been on a golf course before. Ouimet Scholar Brandon Locke (UMass Amherst ‘18/ Tatnuck CC) served as the Caddiemaster, holding as many as 25 training sessions for young people. He was recognized in an on-field appearance along with other community groups at Fenway Park in August. Messrs. Moison, Brent and Kelleher hope to have 25-30 participants in the program in 2017.

Special ’Thank You’ and Other Contributors
O
n this page we see a special ‘thank you’ note from a Ouimet Scholar that was used in our Alumni appeal in 2016. We also see the listing of two other special groups of contributors, our “Spirit of Golf” Award recipients and Eddie Lowery Bequest Society members, many of who have created endowed scholarships.
“For the past three years the Ouimet Fund has helped ease my family’s financial worries in attending college. Thanks to your generosity, I have been able to focus on the important things in life, such as health and family. During my second year of college, my mother was diagnosed with Lymphoma. The Ouimet Scholarship, as well as endoweds, have helped to facilitate the burden of college tuition and allowed me to focus on my education. As a Ouimet Scholar, I have gained opportunities that will help shape me into the professional I have strived to be. I aspire to work in a hospital as a Neonatal or labor and delivery nurse. This summer, I will be working as a Certified Nurse Assistant Boston Medical Hospital as I work towards graduation in 2017. Thank you!”

T
he Ouimet Fund offers its Scholars special participatory programs. Here’s a look at three of these opportunities:
Scholars Caddie in Deutsche Bank Championship
The Ouimet Fund once again provided caddies for the Deutsche Bank Championship Pro-Am in September. Scholars and Alumni walked the fairways of TPC Boston alongside PGA Tour standouts Rickie Fowler, Henrik Stenson, and Sergio Garcia. The Fund also received spots to show its Public Service Announcement on Golf Channel and NBC throughout Championship weekend thanks to Deutsche Bank.
Dale Carnegie
The 14th Annual Ouimet Dale Carnegie “Generation Next – Effective Leadership and Communications” course was again generously contributed by John MacKinnon, President of Performance Training, and coordinator of Dale Carnegie Training in the For the 14th year, Ouimet Scholars caddied for amateurs in Boston area. Approximately 25 Ouimet Scholars graduated from the eight-week the Deutsche Bank Pro-Am during tournament week at TPC program. Mr. MacKinnon, a Ouimet Director from Charles River CC, developed a Boston. program and donates free admission (a value of over $1,500) to Ouimet Scholars. Each year, graduates of the course report that it was one of the most beneficial they have ever taken. The Fund wishes to thank Mr. MacKinnon, as well as Terry Carleton and Bentley University for contributing the meeting space.
Scholars Keep Score at NFL Alumni Event
Once again, for the 18th year, a group of Ouimet Scholars volunteered as scorers at the NFL Alumni/New England Chapter’s Annual Golf Outing contested at Indian Ridge CC in Andover. Scholars had the unique opportunity to ride alongside NFL living legends. Chapter representative Dave O’Brien again collaborated closely with The Fund to make the day a success. Kristopher Kodys ’17, a Scholar from Coastal Carolina University spoke at dinner on his involvement in golf and his goals to become a golf professional post-graduation.

2016-2017 Ouimet Scholars
O
n the following pages we proudly list the 2016-2017 Francis Ouimet Scholarship recipients who represent the $1.85 Million in Scholarships awarded this year. We believe that the Ouimet Scholarship program sees such incredible graduation results because of two main factors. First, the financial investment in the young men & women increases their ability to afford the tuition and remain enrolled. Secondly, the Scholars have a strong work ethic, having grown up working in golf at a young age, surrounded by leaders and role models at the clubs. In short, the Scholarship works because THEY work!

Ouimet Fund Memorial Donations
isted below are memorial donations The Fund has received. The Ouimet Fund has a full memorial donations program, which remembers people who have had golf as a favored pastime in their lives. Included in this list are several long-time Ouimet supporters who died within the past year and ongoing gifts that remember people who passed away previously. Among those remembered was Peter Dalton. Peter was a Ouimet Scholarship Alumnus and the longtime Ouimet Chair at Tedesco Country Club. Peter had a distinguished career as a sales representative in the golf industry, frequently supplying The Fund with merchandise and prizes. He was one of the principal suppliers during the Ouimet Centennial with ProQuip USA clothing items. He was a great advocate of caddies, and encouraged numerous young people to apply for Ouimet Scholarships. Peter grew up in Beverly, worked at Myopia Hunt Club as a caddie and then went on to Boston College where he played on the golf team with lifelong friend and Ouimet Director Tom Riordan. Peter worked in golf sales for most of his career, including for 21 years with the Ben Hogan Company. He always felt a highlight was having played golf with Mr. Hogan. A fundraising tournament has been held to create an endowed Peter Dalton scholarship in his name. Also remembered was Frederick (Fred) G.P. Thorne, past Ouimet Fund President (1971-1972) and a Trustee and Ouimet Society Lifetime Member. Mr. Thorne was a member and President of Essex County Club, as well as a former member of the MGA Executive Committee and a member of the United States Senior Golf Association. He was involved in numerous other organizations and health-related programs. He was also deeply committed to his alma mater, Bowdoin College, and had been Chair of its Board of Trustees. Mr. Thorne’s Ouimet presidency was an important part of our history as it included the decision to move from downtown Boston to securing our own building and museum in Weston. He was a frequent donor to the Ouimet Fund and was a great admirer of Francis Ouimet. Frederick (Fred) G.P. Thorne
