GEOPHYSICISTS explore some of the same problems by application of physical, numerical and computer technology to the study of Earth’s interior and for the exploration of natural resources.

careers for geoscientists From predicting earthquakes to studying the geology of Mars, geoscientists work to solve problems at the interface of energy and the environment. Geoscientists are also vital in federal and state government agencies like the Department of the Interior, Forest Service and NASA. An education in geosciences opens up opportunities for a variety of career paths in energy and mineral resources, environmental and academia. Our graduates are also prepared for careers with geoscience applications in law, economics, meteorology, oceanography, science writing and consulting firms.


Professor spotlight: studying the geology of mars Faculty and students in the School of Geosciences study how chemical, physical, and biological processes interact to change our planet over time. They use lab experiments, field studies, and computer models to learn about Earth and the environments in which we live. Professor Megan Elwood Madden also uses these tools to investigate rocks and fluids on other planets. She and her undergraduate and graduate students study how rocks react with brine (very salty water) to better understand the history of water on Mars. They are also developing new analytical tools to study extraterrestrial brines on Mars, icy moons, and other potential habitats for life beyond Earth. This can help her answer the big question: can the nutrients ultimately produced by rock-brine interactions sustain life?

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES The School is committed to engaging interested undergraduate students in cutting-edge, authentic research. The School of Geosciences prioritizes undergraduate research, allowing our students an opportunity to have hands-on experience early in their college career. Students partner with faculty members, in the field and in the lab, to assist with research projects ranging from African lake sediments, to analyzing international earthquake data. With the help of departmental research grants, these projects can culminate in a senior thesis and lead to a publication or presentation at a national scientific conference.

Facilities Sarkeys Energy Center is home to the Youngblood Energy Library, which contains over 120,000 map sheets and approximately 100,000 catalogued volumes. The Oklahoma Geological Survey, located in the Sarkeys Energy Center, collaborates with the School on research, classes, events and field trips. The School has close ties to curators at the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History, giving students the opportunity to work with the museum collections for both cataloging and research.


Field trips provide the opportunity to examine rocks and structures, observe earth processes, participate in field research, and form lasting friendships with your field partners and classmates.

Learning in the field The great outdoors is what draws many people to geosciences. The majority of geology classes involve field trips that focus on the subject matter—studying volcanoes in New Mexico, desert sediments in Nevada, or catastrophic flooding in Arizona. Introductory class field trips focus on the geology of Oklahoma, which spans over 1 billion years of Earth’s history, recording a time when Oklahoma was situated on a beach near the equator before being uplifted in a huge mountain building event that left behind the Arbuckle Mountains. Outside is a natural laboratory for geologists, and the many field trips that occur within the undergraduate curriculum equip you with the skills used by professional geologists. You will observe and describe rock formations all over Oklahoma. You will measure tidal influences along the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. You will also make geologic maps of the mountainous terranes of southern Oklahoma. These field skills will develop students into successful professional geoscientists. All of these field trips culminate in field camp—the six-week capstone geology course that occurs after your junior or senior year.

Bartell field camp OU’s Bartell Field Camp is located in Cañon City, Colorado, at the intersection many rock types and mountain ranges. Every summer the Cañon City area is inundated by geology students all over the country who are there to tie together their previously gained geologic knowledge in their capstone course—field camp. Bartell Field Camp is a premier facility located within the Wet Mountains of southern Colorado. The camp has 16 faculty and student cabins, a study hall, bathhouses and a fullservice dining facility. Bartell Field Camp acts as the home base for students who travel daily to map out the complex geological history of the southern Rocky Mountains in the Cañon City area, with trips to Leadville, Rocky Mountain National Park, and a regional geology overview of the surrounding mountain ranges.


student services + student life Pioneer Natural Resources Student Services Center Pioneer Natural Resources Student Services Center provides academic advising and student life support to the students at the Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy. The Center is the hub for mentorship, student organizations, inclusion and diversity, tutoring, leadership, scholarships, college events and graduation. As a student at Mewbourne College, you’ll work with an advisor throughout your academic career to reach your academic and professional goals through one-on-one meetings once a semester. Advisors can connect you to resources both within the College and on campus.

Student Life In Student Services, we strive to create an environment for engineers and scientists to jumpstart their futures. Our diverse student-driven programming provides experiences that encourage leadership, learning and success that will enhance students’ overall time at the University of Oklahoma. We have six student organizations that combine social aspects with technical prowess and allow you to get a taste of the careers they want to pursue after graduation! Mewbourne students are also part of rich history of the Engineer’s Club.

international programs As a future geoscientist or petroleum engineer, your work will take you across the globe. The College’s International Programs office provides you with the resources and support to kick start your life has a global citizen. The International Programs office organizes annual study abroad opportunities with Mewbourne College faculty that can last anywhere from 10 days to several weeks. We also help facilitate individual, semester- or year-long study abroad opportunities with partner universities. Because of the full course requirements of our degree programs, we know that many traditional study abroad programs do not work for Mewbourne College students. That’s why we work to make sure Mewbourne College’s international programs apply to geosciences and petroleum engineering and fit in your schedule. This means most programs are accelerated, allowed students to still have summer internships. Studying abroad was one of the most life-changing experiences I have ever been through. I’m grateful OU allowed me the opportunity to travel and experience Rio de Janeiro in terms of its culture, major corporations, and breathtaking sites. Knowledge in a classroom is valued but traveling opens up freedoms for critical thinking and real-world application. Never will I forget Brazil or the people who accompanied me on the trip. AT&T Summer Bridge The AT&T Summer Bridge program has become a model for ensuring engineering students’ academic preparedness and success. The four-week, on-campus program is for freshman students who have been accepted to the University of Oklahoma and who are planning to study in the Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy or Gallogly College of Engineering. It is designed to help students prepare for college-level engineering and math course work. Jerry Holmes leadership program for engineers and scientists The Jerry Holmes Leadership Program for Engineers and Scientists provides leadership education for students in the Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy or Gallogly College of Engineering. Students enhance their capabilities across five domains: personal development, interpersonal relationships, management and teamwork, leadership, and intercultural competence.
