The 35th anniversary edition of the Carneigie Medal winning novel with foreword from Geraldine McCaughrean. A beautifully designed new cover package. A gripping and imaginative novel from a master storyteller.
Half my lifetime ago, had just seen my first novel published. I was reeling with happiness as I wandered my local library, reading the book spines, wondering what I should write next. In what genre?
(Readers differ so much in what they like!) Should tackle a mystery?
Adventure? Historical? Comedy? Poetry? Crime . Then it came to me: ‘Why not a bit of each!’ And that’s when the seed of A Pack of Lies was planted. The first version didn’t work. The characters came second to the knick-knacks and furniture. started afresh.
I worked on magazine back then, and the man across the desk from me wore a green corduroy jacket. In summer he was golden-tanned because he played so much cricket. And there he sat: (though didn’t tell the man across the desk): MCC Berkshire—cricketing hero of my book. knew what MCC would look like, what he liked to do, and knew I would slip him into the life of whom? Ailsa! (A name had chosen for my unborn child). It would be terrific fun if it worked!
Writing stories remains (for me)
date, new books pile up That’s why I’m hugely indebted to Oxford University Press for giving A Pack of Lies a new lease of life, and publishing it afresh for a new audience of readers to celebrate the book’s 35th anniversary.
didn’t fully realise, at the time, that my editor, Ron Heapy (whom first knew as a friend of my school teacher), was in fact one of the all-time great children’s editors. He didn’t turn a book down if he saw potential: he encouraged an author simply to make it better. His death left a huge hole in the industry. He was marvellously wry and
understated:
‘Well, I don’t know if anyone will like it, but I do, so I’m going to publish it . I’ve always wanted to win a Carnegie, and dammit, I win it with the library book!’
Oh yes, Ron would be well pleased to see ‘the library book’ celebrating a new lease of life.
A Pack of Lies won two major prizes—The Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Children’s Fiction Award—which was beyond my best imaginings. In time, it meant that I was able to become a full-time author. So, please remember, as you read it, that joy hangs between the pages. I fervently hope some will rub off on your fingers. So, thank you, OUP. And thank you Reader, for picking up A Pack of Lies
Geraldine McCaughrean(By the way, despite Chapter One, I love libraries. So does the real Ailsa—now grown up—who works in them and loves them too. She’s also an actress, so inhabits countless different characters . Wherever did she get that from?)
GERALDINE MCCAUGHREAN trained as a teacher, worked for ten years in publishing, and in 1988 became a full-time writer. Since then Geraldine has written over 140 books and plays for both adults and children, including Peter Pan in Scarlet the official sequel to J M Barrie’s Peter Pan

The sea sprites finished the biscuits but they continued to stay near, swimming circles around us and playfully tugging at our hair. One of them seemed to particularly like me. She was a bit smaller than the others and she kept swimming over to sit on my shoulder. When I asked her what her name was she pointed at one

of the opals embedded in the coral reef. ‘Opal?’ I asked, and the little sea sprite nodded, beaming back at me with a big, wide smile.
‘They’re all so sweet,’ said Delphina. ‘They are,’ I agreed, glancing up towards the surface of the water which was now glinting with a syrupy orange light. The sun was fading.
‘I think we need to go,’ I said. ‘It’s getting late.’
Delphina nodded, looking worried for a moment. ‘I lost track of time!’ she said.
‘I hope we can get back before anyone notices that we weren’t in the palace today.’

When Scrooge awoke, it was so dark, that looking out of bed, he could scarcely distinguish the transparent window from the opaque walls of his chamber. He was endeavouring to pierce the darkness with his ferret eyes, when the chimes of a neighbouring church struck the four quarters. So he listened for the hour.
To his great astonishment the heavy bell went on from six to seven, and from seven to eight, and regularly up to twelve; then stopped. Twelve! It was past two when he went to bed. The clock was wrong. An icicle must have got into the works. Twelve!
He touched the spring of his repeater, to correct this most preposterous clock. Its rapid little pulse beat twelve; and stopped.
‘Why, it isn’t possible,’ said Scrooge, ‘that I can have slept through a whole day and far into another night. It isn’t possible that anything has happened to the sun, and this is twelve at noon!’
The idea being an alarming one, he scrambled out of bed, and groped his way to the window. He was obliged to rub the
frost off with the sleeve of his dressing-gown before he could see anything; and could see very little then. All he could make out was, that it was still very foggy and extremely cold, and that there was no noise of people running to and fro, and making a great stir, as there unquestionably would have been if night had beaten off bright day, and taken possession of the world. This was a great relief, because ‘three days after sight of this First of Exchange pay to Mr Ebenezer Scrooge or his order,’ and so forth, would have become a mere United States’ security if there were no days to count by.
Scrooge went to bed again, and thought, and thought, and thought it over and over and over, and could make nothing of it. The more he thought, the more perplexed he was; and the more he endeavoured not to think, the more he thought.
Marley’s Ghost bothered him exceedingly. Every time he resolved within himself, after mature inquiry, that it was all a dream, his mind flew back again, like a strong spring released, to its first position, and presented the same problem to be worked
Scrooge lay in this state until the chime had gone three quarters more, when he remembered, on a sudden, that the Ghost had warned him of a visitation when the bell tolled one. He resolved to lie awake until the hour was passed; and, considering that he could no more go to sleep than go to Heaven, this was perhaps the wisest resolution in his power. The quarter was so long, that he was more than once convinced he must have sunk into a doze unconsciously, and missed the clock. At length it broke upon his listening ear.
CHARLES DICKENS was born in Portsmouth in 1812. In 1823 his father was imprisoned for debt and Dickens was sent to work in a blacking warehouse. When his father’s fortunes improved, Dickens went back to school and then worked as a solicitor’s clerk, a shorthand reporter, and a parliamentary reporter. In 1833 he began contributing stories to newspapers and magazines and in 1836 his first novel, Pickwick Papers, was published in monthly instalments followed by Oliver Twist in 1837 and A Christmas Carol in 1843. Charles Dickens died in 1870 and has been acclaimed as one of the greatest English novelists.
This stunning Oxford Children’s Classic edition is the perfect introduction to Anne of Green Gables – the unbeatable coming-of-age story.

L.M. MONTGOMERY was born in 1874 on Prince Edward Island, Canada, where Anne of Green Gables is set. Her mother died when she was just a baby and so she was brought up by her strict grandparents. She became a teacher, and although she didn’t enjoy it, it gave her lots of time to write. She had her first poem published at the age of 15, and went on to write hundreds of short stories, poems, and novels throughout her life. Anne of Green Gables was published in 1908 and was an immediate success. She died in 1942.

ANNA SEWELL was born in 1820. At the age of fourteen she injured both of her ankles in an accident, which meant that she could never walk properly again. Because of this she relied heavily on travelling in horse-drawn carriages, and it was from here that her love of horses grew. In 1871 Anna began writing a book aimed at encouraging more humane treatment of horses. Owing to her failing health the story took nearly seven years to complete but was eventually published in 1877. Sadly, Anna never got to know of the huge success of Black Beauty, as she died in 1878.

Our breakfast table was cleared early, and Holmes waited in his dressing-gown for the promised interview. Our clients were punctual to their appointment, for the clock had just struck ten when Dr Mortimer was shown up, followed by the young baronet. The latter was a small, alert, dark-eyed man about thirty years of age, very sturdily built, with thick black eyebrows and a strong, pugnacious face. He wore a ruddytinted tweed suit and had the weather-beaten appearance of one who has spent most of his time in the open air, and yet there was something in his steady eye and the quiet assurance of his bearing which indicated the gentleman.

‘Ratty,’ said ‘R the Mole suddenly, one bright summer morning, ‘if you please, I want to ask you a favour.’ The Rat was sitting on the river bank, singing a little song. He had just composed it himself, so he was very taken up with it, and would not pay proper attention to Mole or anything else. Since early morning he had been swimming in the river, in company with his friends the ducks. And when the ducks stood on their heads suddenly, as ducks will, he would dive down and tickle their necks, just under where their chins would be if ducks had chins, till they were forced to come to the surface again in a hurry, spluttering and angry and shaking their feathers at him, for it is impossible to say quite all you feel when your head is under water. At
last they implored him to go away and attend to his own affairs and leave them to mind theirs. So the Rat went away, and sat on the river bank in the sun, and made up a song about them, which he called ‘DUCKS’ DITTY.’
All along the backwater, Through the rushes tall, Ducks are a-dabbling, Up tails all!

A delightfully spooky world brought to life by breathtaking two-colour illustrations throughout make these books look howlingly good.
Bridges the gap between picture books and independent reading. Perfect for reluctant readers.
Celebrating an exuberant wolf boy character with a nose for adventure, powered by strong friendships and a belief that kindness and empathy for others will always win the day.
Luckily, Edie was the perfect scout. She floated ahead, drifting through the fallen trees as though they weren’t even there, checking the way before Femi and Rudy clambered over and crawled under the obstacles. Bit by bit they scrabbled their way through the forest. They followed the trickling rainwater, but didn’t find much besides broken branches, soggy bogs, and dirty puddles. There was no sign of Jackie’s toolbox.
The afternoon wore on until the trees finally parted, revealing the murky shore of Dankpool Lake. It got its name because the surrounding rocky hills were so steep they cut out the dwindling light, and the water was so dark it looked like an enormous puddle of jet-black ink.
‘Paul Westmoreland’s debut gothic-inspired middle grade series will forge a love of reading in little ones with an appetite for adventure. Packed with mischief, irresistible characters, colourful illustrations & lots of heart, Rudy’s werewolf skateboarding escapades are the perfect spooky read for Halloween!’

The further from the equator you travel, the more seasonal the climate becomes, with different amounts of rainfall, temperature, and sunshine at different times of year. In some rainforests, most of the year’s rainfall may come during long periods known as monsoons.
These rainforests include many deciduous trees, which lose some or all of their leaves during drier times of the year. This helps the trees to save the water they have stored up in the dry season, which would otherwise be lost through their leaves (see page 26).
This seasonal shedding of leaves affects the rest of the forest too. For part of the year, the forest floor gets more sunlight than a typical rainforest, so lots of smaller plants can survive. They form an understory that is not found in tropical lowland rainforests.
However, the dry spells also mean that these monsoon rainforests have fewer plants and less biodiversity overall. The canopy might be dominated by one or two types of tree, instead of the hundreds of species found in evergreen rainforests.
Features include comic strips, Hero panels, and Speak like a Scientist sections.

indigenous leader of the Kayapó people of the Brazilian amazon, nominated for the nobel peace prize for a lifetime of work to protect ndigenous peoples and nature from the harm caused by mining, cattle ranching, and logging.
One of the most immediate effects is an increase in local temperatures. Billions of transpiring leaves, cool the forest. Deforested parts of the Amazon basin are already 5–10°C warmer than nearby rainforest. They also get less rainfall, as there are no trees left to create clouds.
Deforestation could quickly affect rainfall in other parts of the world too. Without the ‘flying rivers’ set up by the Amazon rainforest, for example, rainfall in south-eastern South America and even in the US Midwest could decrease. Nineteen of the world’s largest cities depend on weather patterns set up by distant forests for their water supply.
Rainforest loss affects humans around the world in other ways too. Scientists estimate that we are already losing up to 100 rainforest species a day. Of all the plants useful in treating cancer, seventy per cent can be found only in rainforests. Losing rainforest biodiversity means losing future life-saving medicines.
i s it too late?
Although we know how important rainforests are, rainforests in many parts of the world are being destroyed faster than ever before. If we lose them, they could be gone for ever.
But there is hope, in the form of people who are working to protect the world’s rainforests.

The great thing about the Scientific Method is that there’s no such thing as a wrong answer Even if the hypothesis was proven false, you’ve still learned something from the data. And then you can think of a new hypothesis.
Heavy meals
In the early seventeenth century, Santorio, an Italian doctor, was one of the first people to use data in a scientific investigation, asking himself, ‘What happens to my food after I’ve eaten it?’
Santorio didn’t have a hypothesis exactly, but he wanted to collect data to try and solve this mystery. He started weighing everything he ate and drank, keeping a careful record of how much he weighed before and after each meal, and he also weighed his poo and wee He did this every day for thirty years!
Santorio’s data-gathering was the first step in understanding digestion and metabolism.
What is typical?
The data Santorio collected was quite messy and not just because of what he was measuring! The term ‘messy’ here means that the measurements are highly
varied and seem to change a lot from one day to the next. This can make it harder to figure out what the data is telling us. A simple way to analyze variable
An average is a kind of middle figure that tells us something about a set of data in a quick and simple way. There are actually three kinds of average: the mean the mode, and the median They are all a little different to one another and have different uses.

Most football fans would not use averages to choose which team to support, but maybe they should! Let’s look at the
