Text extracts included in Unit 17 Essay ‘Let’s work together to preserve nature’ by Zoe Green, Year 10

Things to know before you start teaching this lesson • Recommended total teaching time for Unit 17 is 30 minutes. Students may require an additional 15–20 minutes to complete homework tasks. • A series of connected paragraphs can be organised into an essay. In school, students are most likely to be asked to write text response essays and persuasive essays. • Students in Year 10 should already have a clear understanding of how to write paragraphs, but will benefit from learning how to write an accompanying introduction and conclusion and sequencing their paragraphs to develop a cohesive essay. • The TEEL acronym is a useful reminder of how to sequence and organise sentences in a paragraph.

Lesson 17: Writing essays STARTER ACTIVITY 5 mins

Writing essays • Begin by writing the word ‘essay’ on the board. • Ask students what an essay is, and if they can recall some different types of essays that they might have written in school. • Students are likely to mention persuasive essays and text responses. Talk briefly about the basic differences between these two types of essays. • Then ask students what the structure of an essay is. Prompt them to mention introductions, body paragraphs and conclusions.

Activity 1: In Context activity • Read the In Context essay ‘Let’s work together to preserve nature’ as a class. • Complete activity 17.4 comprehension questions 1–5 and share answers to check for understanding. • Ask students to re-read the introduction and conclusion, and answer questions 6 and 7. Ask students to volunteer to share their answers with the class. Responses can also be checked against the answers provided at the back of the workbook. • Write down the topic sentences for each body paragraph on the board, and ask students to answer question 8. Reinforce the relationship between the topic sentence and the main point of a paragraph. • Students can then complete question 9. OR Activity 2: Peer editing • Students will work in pairs for this exercise. • Each student in the pair reads a text response essay previously written by their partner. • They consider how well the introduction and conclusion meet their intended purpose, and consider how coherently
