Transformative Monsoon Flow Theme: Urban Ecology

Executive summary Malaysia has rainfall of above the world average per year and the monsoon drains hold a key position for the effective usage of water resource. Emerging rapid urbanization trends manifest transform the existing cities through change in land use, high population density, intensified transportation and verticality. Our aim is to use SMART DEVELOPMENT as a tool to conserve and promote the URBAN ECOLOGY. A gap, in appreciating the existing monsoon drains for urban design, was made into an opportunity. The importance of linear spaces in the city is thus appreciated through the play in monsoon drain and THE WALL. The proposal employs strategies on nature, community and vertical city to achieve the visons for the future. The idea of TRANSFORMATIVE MONSOON FLOW could be borrowed to inform urban design through the globe.

INTRODUCTION

Malaysia has rainfall of above the world average per year and the monsoon drains hold a key position for the effective usage of water resource. Monsoon drains or canals are harsh environments. Flowing through urban areas, they are subjected to urban runoff, pollution, and also frequent, severe flash flooding during heavy rainfall, which results in sudden and rapid increase in depth, volume and flow of water. The contemporary urban scenario encompasses the following challenges on the existing monsoon drains: Poor catchment areas to utilize surface run-off water; Drain channels characterize back of a city affecting safety in the area; Conventional drain channels susceptible to maintenance problems; Risks on to the riverside low-lying and flood-prone areas. There is a need as such to effectively manage the surface run-off in order to mitigate risks due flooding, wastage of water resources and unsafe urban archipelagos.

Vision statement Our vision is to achieve a sustainable urban ecology, which is smart and green. Our objectives are: a) To conserve and appreciate the urban ecology b) To connect the new and old communities c) To create a strong sense of place through public open spaces

Baseline Scenario Urban ecology : Surface runoffs Malaysia has rainfall of above the world average per year and the monsoon drains hold a key position for the effective usage of water resource. The issues to extensive surface runoffs are : •Poor catchment areas to utilize surface run-off water; •Drain channels characterize back of a city affecting safety in the area; •Conventional drain channels susceptible to maintenance problems; •Risks on to the riverside low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Intensification of Urbanization Intensification of urbanization transforms cities from low to high density development and causes tension between the existing old and the emerging new communities.

Monsoon A monsoon is a seasonal change in the direction of the prevailing, or strongest, winds of a region. Monsoons cause wet and dry seasons throughout much of the tropics. They are most often associated with the Indian Ocean. Monsoons always blow from cold to warm regions. The summer monsoon and the winter monsoon determine the climate for most of South and Southeast Asia. The heavy rains during monsoon season requires construction of monsoon drains to channel water effectively to avoid flooding. Monsoon drains are harsh environments. Flowing through urban areas, they are subjected to urban runoff, pollution, and also frequent, severe flash flooding during heavy rainfall, which results in sudden and rapid increase in depth, volume and flow of water.

We believe that the monsoon drains can be transformed into sociable continuous green spines providing communal areas. In addition, the kinetic water energy collected during the monsoons could be used to produce green energy for the use of communities.

How does this project impact the community and enhance their lifestyle? How does this project impact the community and enhance their lifestyle? Monsoon drains are harsh environments. Flowing through urban areas, they are subjected to urban runoff, pollution, and also frequent, severe flash flooding during heavy rainfall, which results in sudden and rapid increase in depth, volume and flow of water. The division of land created by monsoon drains have the potential to be transformed for communities to connect from node to node in a given site context. The transformed communal spaces will then cater for communities as a vibrant work-play areas. It will also provide open green communal spaces between various buildings.

How does it work? The long depressed base plane of the monsoon drains will be redefined as open spaces , with elements of green activities to enable interactions among various users. This would encourage healthy activities of walking, exercising and socializing within the community. Interactive walls replace shops to allow paperless transaction and deliver transportation data to the users for smart information. The power required to feed interactive walls will be generated from the flow of the water in the monsoon drains, which will be stored independently in tanks and batteries. The entire project would significantly reduce waste production and decrease carbon footprint 9
