araxos airport terminal Araxos, Achaea, Greece Diploma Thesis Technical University of Crete Collaborator: George Antonopoulos 2017-2018
The “Agamemnon” airport in Araxos, mainly used for military purposes by the Greek Air Force since 1969, is located among the fields and greenhouses of the Peloponnese plain. This point, being particularly central, is ideal to accomodate the periphery of Western Greece. Close to a variety of surviving ancient greek monuments, such as Ancient Olympia, it is a place of special tourist interest, in addition, examining the existing infrastructure, it is clear that the runway and the taxiways are perfectly capable of accomodating the commeercial aircrafts. So this proposal concentrates to the design of the new terminal and the landside.
Exploring the area and experiencing its Genius Loci, the visitor realizes that all its elements, such as the sea, the surrounding settlements, or the surviving monuments, are gradually appearing in front of him. This is the main feauture of the area, which is used as the main design concept for the new terminal. Aiming to maintain this “Genius Loci of Surprise” for the passenger who arrives or departs from it, a patchwork from oxidised metal plates on the roof is used. Thus, The pattern of the roof is in hatmony with the fields, and the passenger realizes the existence of the building when he is at its entrance. The same principal is used in the interior, where the passenger is invited to explore the space, as elements are placed as visual obstacles. The facade is a dual glass wall, with the bearing structure positioned between the two glasses, which creates a translucent filter between the interior and the exterior. The airport hotel, located next to the terminal is designed as a small settlement. A single roof covers this “settlement” so that it can stand next to the sizable terminal. Consequently, the terminal is not just a “machine”, which serves civil aviation, but it is transformed into a gateway for the area, in which it is located.

multipurpose building Venetian Moat, Chania, Crete, Greece Architectural Design Studio VI Technical University of Crete Collaborator: Maria Skordouli 2012-2013 The area under study is located at the boundaries between the old and the new town of Chania and is intersected be the Venetian walls. The objective was to create a multicenter of culture and habitation. The design vision was to reinforce the presence of the university students in the city and promote the cultural - educational aspect by means of studentsand citizens’interaction. The students’residences become a benchmark in Chania, setting a powerful frontier towards the new city, while embracing the new lowered mart of the moat. Therefore, two main routes are created serving the pedestrian network. On the one hand, at street level, an elevated sheltered square is created, delimited by shops serving the local market. On the other hand, at the level of the moat we find the new municipal library including a workshop section, multipurpose venues and the theater.

library - cafe design Chania, Crete, Greece Interior Design Technical University of Crete Collaborator: Giorgos Antonopoulos 2012-2013 The object of this project was to design the interior space of a pre-existing synthesis. In this case, a library-cafe was chosen, consisted of three levels (basement, ground floor, first floor). The main concept was to connect these three levels both practically and metaphorically. This is achieved with the use of four elements. The atrium, which lets the light reach the basement and allows visual contact between the floors. Placed inside the atrium is a wooden structure, hanging from the roof. The straircases, which are designed as furniture. And lastly, three sliding corten panels, almost ten meters tall. These panels, which are perforated with words, create shadows due to the light, either coming from the windows behind them, or from the technical lighting placed in between. Corten, wood and lighting, on a plaster background create a cosy space for the costumers, so that they can relaxand study.

05 park design Municipal Stadium, Chania, Crete, Greece Landscape Design Technical University of Crete Collaborators: Iosif Athanasiou, Giorgos Antonopoulos, Giorgos Chachlioutakis2012-2013 The aim of this project is the transformation of the old stadium in the center of Chania into a park which should include a small outdoor theather, an open air exhibition hall and an info point. The stadium was always a meeting point for the residents of the city of Chania. This was the starting point of the synthesis. The light towers are the distinctive characteristic of the city skyline, providing a landmark for the visitors. The first decision was to preserve one of them in the main entrance of the park, as a remnant of the place. The light created from them formed two diagonal paths on the ground. In addition, four platforms, which were designed as extensions of the neighboring school buildings, and a circular path covered with tartan, led to the final result. Citrus trees, which thrive in the certain landscape, were placed between the platforms.

from architecture to photography “The power of documentation and the potential distortion of reality Research Thesis Project Technical University of Crete 2019-2020
Since the invention of photography as a medium, especially after its general consolidation, there was a fundamental relantionship formed between itself and Architecture. This relationship was bidirectorially profitable, as both parts had something to gain. That was particurarly profitable for the field of Architecture, since for the first time in history it was given the oportunity to assure its survival through time and space. That exact result of the interaction of the two fields is the main focus of this thesis. Through its entirety, we will examine Photography as a means of representation for Architecture, its role its the latter’s course and evolution, as well as the interaction that the two had, both with each other and with their viewer. Nevertheless, our main axis will be the opportunity that the audience is given to examine and analyze the final result of their collaboration, namely the architectural photographs, and the comparison of those with the buildings depicted in them, along with the inevitable differences between the work of various photographers.
