KEN SIMONTON LIBERAL STUDIES “Oregon State has always been the embodiment of opportunity for me. From my first recruiting letter and Mike Riley’s home visit, to shaking hands with Dr. Risser on graduation day, I always felt in my spirit that here, the world was open to me. Together, my experiences at OSU forged meaningful conversations, friendships and purpose that continues to shape my today and propel me into tomorrow.”

“Oregon State is family. As a result of this close bond the amount of personal growth I have undergone since arriving on campus almost four years ago is amazing. Knowing I will have the support of this family with me for the rest of my life makes playing football and taking care of business in the classroom easy. Without Oregon State, Coach Riley and the entire football staff I wouldn’t be the man I am today.”

hrough The Campaign for OSU, donors have given more than $165 million to Oregon State Athletics to transform the student-athlete experience and create a culture of leadership and success, both on and off the field. The Beth Ray Center for Academic Support, Whyte Track and Field Center, and the OSU Basketball Center each have shaped not only the physical landscape, but also the competitive one. A strong athletics program creates a kinetic thread that connects the entire campus community and embodies the spirit and innovative nature of Oregon State’s students and alumni. Our goal is to compete for and win a Pac-12 championship every year, in every sport. While we expect to win on the field, we must more importantly provide our student-athletes with the tools to positively impact the world around them through academic
achievement, personal development, and athletic discipline. Your investment now will help shape the future leaders of our communities tomorrow. In order to take the next step in its forward progress, OSU Athletics must continue its focus on growing support through Our Beaver Nation. Increasing annual support of Our Beaver Nation is the most direct way to support the transformation that is taking place every day in the lives of Oregon State’s student-athletes and will allow Oregon State to launch into the future and sustain itself as a preeminent athletics program, both in the Pac-12 and on a national level. Our student-athletes come to Corvallis from points near and far in search of education and growth. They are of different ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds. Individually, each brings a unique story. Collectively, they are the heart and
soul of Beaver Nation. We celebrate the diversity of our student-athletes and provide them with the tools to positively impact the world around them. What makes the Oregon State student-athlete experience unique? Each student-athlete possesses unique gifts that must be maximized and put into practical use in order to pursue a path of personal and professional development. Whether the next step for a student-athlete who receives their undergraduate degree is to attend graduate school, enter the workforce or continue their athletic pursuits, we want them to think big and reach for the stars. Intercollegiate athletics presents an opportunity for young people to transform their lives. It offers the same experience for all members of Our Beaver Nation.

The support from Beaver Nation paired with a terrific education gave me a strong selfconfidence which propelled me to become a successful professional athlete, but more importantly, prepared me and motivated me to be a teacher and coach. Giving back and preparing young kids is the highlight of who I am.” C L A S S

“When I made the choice to come to Oregon State University I knew it was going to be a place where I would continue to grow and develop as a person, but what I didn’t know was how profoundly it was going to change my life. I realize that my status as a “Beaver” doesn’t expire when I graduate, but rather it opens doors into a world of opportunity through the connections I’ve gained and the life lessons I’ve learned here at Oregon State University.”

KNUTE BUEHLER, MD MICROBIOLOGY “My education and relationships developed at OSU allowed my future aspirations to meet no closed doors. The knowledge gained from my degrees prepared me well for the varied challenges of medical school and a Rhodes Scholarship. Playing baseball at OSU further enhanced my college experience. Pitching for the Beavers allowed me to grow in ways the classroom does not allow. Importantly, I matured with the knowledge that being a productive team member sometimes requires finding a secondary but meaningful role.” C L A S S

“The past three years have truly played an incredible role in shaping my life. I have not only grown as a player, but more importantly as a young man. The coaches and players provide an atmosphere that accepts nothing less than the best from those who represent our program. As a competitor it has only elevated my game to be around this elite group of athletes and coaches. It has taught me that talent can only get you so far, but hard work has no limits.”

OPPORTUNITIES TO SUPPORT
T
he focus on growing support through Our Beaver Nation remains priority number one. Strategic investments in our student-athletes, coaching staff, athletic facilities and scholastic opportunities are all supported with gifts to Our Beaver Nation. However, many times annual giving programs act as an entry point into larger philanthropic interests and giving opportunities. To those who desire to make a larger impact, additional opportunities are outlined here. Contact the Our Beaver Nation Office at (541) 737-2370 for further information on any giving opportunity. Goss Stadium Locker Room Project Goss Stadium, which has stood on the Oregon State campus since 1907, is now the oldest continuous ballpark in the nation. The Beavers have played at the site of Goss Stadium since the program began play more than 100 years ago. The stadium has undergone several enhancements in recent years including upgrades completed in 7
advance of the 2007 and 2009 seasons. Despite the recent improvements, the baseball program has outgrown its locker room space. In order to meet the growing needs and maintain a competitive advantage for the baseball program, Goss Stadium requires a new home locker room that will be among the finest in the nation. The project will result in a more functional locker room, an expanded equipment room, repurposed team meeting space, recruiting area and main entry point. Whyte Track and Field Center (Phase II) In September 2012 Oregon State opened the Whyte Track and Field Center. The ribbon-cutting ceremony represented another milestone to the rebirth of the Beavers’ track and field program. The unveiling included an International Association of Athletics Federation certified Olympic-caliber polyurethane surface, a FieldTurf infield, a nine-lane track, high jump aprons, long jump and triple jump runways, pole vault and javelin runways, shot put throw sectors and dual discus rings.
We now turn our attention to Phase II of this project which includes the installation of grandstands and restrooms, a press box, scoreboard, a hammer throw area, athlete staging expanse and other amenities required to host significant meets including the Pac-12 Championships. Reser Stadium/ Valley Football Center Project Originally constructed in 1990, the Valley Football Center is a three-story complex located in the north end zone of Reser Stadium that houses the sports medicine and training operations, football video, training table for student-athletes, equipment operations, football coaches’ offices and team meeting rooms, football players’ lounge and football locker room. Enhancements have taken place in recent years with the players’ lounge in 2010, coaches’ offices in 2011 and training room in 2012. In order to meet the growing needs of the football program, the Valley Center will require a major renovation and expansion. The proposed project will result in a more functional locker room, an
expanded equipment room, repurposed team meeting space, recruiting area and main entry point. Additionally, the project will remove the old bleachers behind the north end zone and add new seats for an improved fan experience. The ability to connect the east concourse to the west concourse will also be explored to address circulation issues within the stadium. The project will add 50,000 square feet of space and provide a functional base of operations for football, equipment and sports medicine. The renovated Valley Football Center will allow Oregon State to provide a first-class experience for current student-athletes while making an impact in recruiting. Student-Athlete Leadership Initiative The Leadership Initiative is a pioneering venture initially focused on the football program that will provide transformational personal and professional experiences that create productive leaders for life. By giving its studentathletes a head start in their preparation for life after athletics, Oregon State will be nationally recognized as a leader with compelling leadership programs that enhance the ability to recruit and retain elite student-athletes. The vision will be achieved by:
• Identifying unique interests and skills of student-athletes and determining initial professional direction and course for success. • Connecting student-athletes to thought leaders, innovators and business professionals that otherwise would not have been accessible. • Providing student-athletes with realworld experiences that will benefit them both personally and professionally. • Creating meaningful opportunities for businesses to engage with and invest in Oregon State Athletics. • Preparing student-athletes to leave Oregon State as desirable employees who are ready to be leaders in the workforce and life. Scholarship Endowment It is imperative for us to take action to secure the future. An endowment commitment is both a gift now and for the future because the endowment principal is continually reinvested and a percentage of the accrued interest is used annually for scholarship and program support. Through the use of endowed funds it is our goal to secure the financial future of Oregon State Athletics. Our ability to transform lives through scholarship opportunities is directly impacted by the size of our endowment.
Individual Sport Giving OSU has 17 varsity sports and we encourage you to support your favorite team or teams. Program desires often extend beyond the funding capabilities of the department and gifts to individual teams assist in providing the support needed to compete at the highest level. Specific needs vary from program to program, but funds are generally used to extend recruiting budgets, enhance video technology, cover special facility upgrades and support the vision of that team’s head coach. Individual sport giving is the perfect way to feel a deeper connection with an OSU program most meaningful to you. Planned Giving Planned gifts include bequests, trusts, gift annuities and other gift vehicles. Planned gifts can be funded with many different types of assets, including securities, real estate, CDs and retirement assets. Thoughtful, informed planning can yield significant benefits for both the donor and Oregon State Athletics. Often, combining the right asset with the right gift vehicle is the key to meeting your financial and charitable goals. Done correctly a planned gift will not affect your current lifestyle or your family’s security.
