His Story

Those we love must some day pass beyond our present sight… must leave us and the world we know without their radiant light…

James Williams, Sr. was born on December 18, 1942 to Anna Mae Williams and the late Johnny Williams, Sr. in New Orleans, LA.

James received his formal education in the Orleans Parish School system, graduating from Walter L. Cohen High School in 1962. He married the love of his life, Shirley Latisha, in 1962, and they were blessed with two sons, James, Jr. and Daymone.

James worked for the U. S. Postal Service for 46 years and also worked for the Omni Royal Orleans Hotel. He loved playing checkers, listening to his “oldies but goodies” and watching old movies. He was a very kind and lovable person who loved people. It was these qualities that earned him recognition from the U.S. Postal Service in November 2011, in a “Salute to Postal Veterans.”

James was preceded in death by his father, Johnny Williams, Sr. and his wife, Shirley Latisha Williams. He leaves to cherish his fond memories, his mother, Anna Mae Williams; sons, James Williams, Jr. and Daymone Williams; granddaughter, Jamie Williams; grandson, James Williams, III; daughter-in-law, Kim Williams; brothers, Johnny Williams (Hilda) and Jerome Price and a host of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, cousins and many friends from the U. S. Postal Service.

“The Louisiana Leader” November 21, 2011

If you’ve ever had to use the Post Office Boxes located in front of the New Orleans Main Office Processing and Distribution Center located on Loyola Avenue, around 3:00 p.m. you’ve most likely seen Mr. Williams’ smiling face… greeting and assisting customers, and always with a big smile. Mr. Williams says “As outside Mailbox Collector on Tour 3, it has been an honor and a pleasure for me to reflect the image and personalities of my co-workers inside of the building where the focus is processing the mail as quickly as possible.” October 18, 2011, marked 46 years of postal service for Mr. Williams. When asked what he had to say, Mr. Williams commented “I can’t say enough blessings in giving thanks and praise and appreciation to the many senior employees during my postal years.” Mr. Williams went on to say “It was the guidance concern and kindness of the senior employees that enabled me to become a dedicated and sincere employee.” Mr. Williams is thankful to the Postal Service and acknowledges that it has been through the Postal Service that he has been able to acquire a better living for himself and his family. Mr. Williams or Mr. James, as his many younger friends call him; says that he continues on “without any complaints or regrets, but only appreciation for this lengthy and enjoyable career, I love my coworkers and have been so grateful to have the wonderful friends through all the years of my career with the Postal Service.” We say to Mr. James Williams… thank you for setting the pace and being the flavor of the New Orleans Post Office.
