It’s Hurricane Season

The 2020 Hurricane season was one of the busiest on record. There were more named storms in the Atlantic than in any other year in recorded history. Thankfully, South Florida never had a direct impact! We had plenty to worry about with the pandemic.

The latest forecasts expect 2021 to also be an above-average year for hurricanes. We all need to be prepared.

It Only Takes One Storm

According to Florida State’s Tropical Cyclone Track Probability Tool, Broward County has about an 80% chance of having a tropical cyclone pass over us and a 30% chance for a major hurricane. Every one of us needs to be prepared.

The most important thing is to have a plan. The Department of Homeland Security’s ready.gov/hurricanes website offers the following basic preparedness tips: ⊲ Know where to go if ordered to evacuate and have an idea of where your family will stay if you leave. ⊲ Put together a go-bag that includes flashlights, batteries, cash, a first aid kit, medications, copies of critical personal information, and water. ⊲ If you think you may stay in your home, ensure you have several days of adequate supplies in case you lose power and water supply. ⊲ Create a family communication plan to ensure you and your loved ones are informed.

Living in South Florida comes with so many benefits it’s hard to list them all. The biggest challenge we face each year is the threat of hurricanes. A little planning will make a big difference.

On June 19, 1865, Union Army General Gordon Granger road into Galveston, Texas to enforce Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation in the last, most remote known location in the South. Since then, the date has been celebrated as the end of American slavery. It is helpful to reflect on the darkest parts of our history in order for us to look forward.
